The specimen described herein and assigned to ‘Xyophorus’ sp. (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Tardigrada) was collected in the locality Cerro Zeballos, northwestern Chubut Province, Argentina. The fossiliferous sediments bearing the specimen are correlated with Collón Curá Formation. The specimen has the features described for other members of ‘Xyophorus’ (e.g. shape and size of the molariforms, relationship between diastema length, m1 and m2 length) and has a Diastema Length/Tooth Row Length index (DL/TRL index) of ca. 14, between that of ‘X.’ villarroeli (12.07) from the Mauri Formation, Bolivia (ca. 10.3 Ma) and that of ‘X.’ bondesioi (16.45) from Arroyo Chasicó Formation, Argentina (ca. 10–8.7 Ma). The relationship between DL/TRL index and age of the bearing sediments, would suggest a Tortonian age (late Miocene) for the deposits of Collón Curá Formation at Cerro Zeballos, which results in a ‘younger age’ compared to the middle Miocene age traditionally accepted for the Collón Curá Formation bearing the Colloncuran fauna sensu stricto. Although no absolute ages for Cerro Zeballos are available yet, the geographic proximity of Cerro Zeballos to Cushamen River (with levels dated at ca. 11.2 Ma) supports the tentative Tortonian age indicated by the presence of ‘Xyophorus’ sp.  相似文献

We test for the presence of evolutionary stasis in a species of Late Cretaceous ammonoid cephalopod, Hoploscaphites nicolletii, from the North American Western Interior Seaway. A comprehensive dataset of morphological traits was compiled across the entire spatial and temporal range of this species. These were analysed in conjunction with sedimentologically and geochemically derived palaeoenvironmental conditions hypothesized to apply selective pressures. All changes in shell shape were observed to be ephemeral and reversable, that is, no unidirectional trend could be observed in any of the morphological traits analysed. Correlations between palaeoenvironmental conditions and morphological traits suggests ecophenotypic processes were at play; however, either environmental changes were too minor and/or provided no isolating mechanism to drive speciation. These data support mechanisms of stasis such as homogenizing gene flow or stabilizing selection under a fluctuating optimum (probably reflecting spatiotemporally heterogeneous palaeoenvironmental conditions). Finally, changes in shell size were not significantly associated with changes in shell-specific δ18O, despite a correlation between shell size and δ18O averaged across horizons. This suggests a mismatch in scales of geochemical sampling that supports caution when making broad interpretations based on averaged geochemical data.  相似文献

Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni, the Alabama cavefish, is a federally endangered stygobitic fish that is restricted to Key Cave in northwestern Alabama. Due to the low abundance of this species and the continuous threats to the cave's recharge area, we surveyed Key Cave from 1992 to 1997. Alabama cavefish were present in five different pools and had numbers comparable to previous surveys performed in the 1970's and 1980's. Three different size classes were observed, indicating recruitment is occurring. These data suggest that the population is relatively stable, but future monitoring is recommended. The Alabama cavefish is an endangered species and is extremely difficult to capture, therefore any marking program to accurately estimate the population size is unlikely. A single specimen of Typhlichthys subterraneus was captured in Key Cave. This falsifies the previous assumption that these two species are allopatric. Because of this discovery, we resurveyed seven caves in the area around Key Cave for additional populations of S. poulsoni. These caves had either known populations of T. subterraneus or unidentified cavefish. No additional populations of S. poulsoni were discovered, but further investigation is warranted. The Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge was established in the high recharge area of Key Cave to protect this habitat, yet threats to the groundwater continue from encroaching urbanization.  相似文献

Recent studies connecting the decline of large predators and consumers with the disintegration of ecosystems often overlook that this natural experiment already occurred. As recently as 14 ka, tens of millions of large‐bodied mammals were widespread across the American continents. Within 1000 yr of the arrival of humans, ~ 80% were extinct including all > 600 kg. While the cause of the late Pleistocene (LP) extinction remains contentious, largely overlooked are the ecological consequences of the loss of millions of large‐bodied animals. Here, we examine the influence of the LP extinction on a local mammal community. Our study site is Hall's Cave in the Great Plains of Texas, which has unparalleled fine‐grained temporal resolution over the past 20 ka, allowing characterization of the community before and after the extinction. In step with continental patterns, this community lost 80% of large‐bodied herbivores and 20% of apex predators at the LP extinction. Using tightly constrained temporal windows spanning full glacial to modern time periods and comprehensive faunal lists, we reconstruct mammal associations and body size distributions over time. We find changes in alpha and beta diversity, and in the statistical moments associated with periods of climate change as well as with the LP extinction event. Additionally, there is a fundamental change in the composition of herbivores, with grazers being replaced by frugivores/granivores starting about 15 ka; the only large‐bodied grazer remaining today is the bison Bison bison. Moreover, the null model program PAIRS reveals interesting temporal patterns in the disassociation or co‐occurrence of species through the terminal Pleistocene and Holocene. Extinct species formed more significant associations than modern ones, and formed more aggregated pairs than do modern species. Further, negative species associations were about three times stronger than positive ones, suggesting that competitive interactions or environmental filtering are a strong force in community structure.  相似文献

The life history of Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) remains poorly known and data from strandings can help provide important information. Data from 126 Risso's dolphins stranded or bycaught along the southeastern coastline of South Africa between 1958 and 2017 were analyzed in relation to their sex, age structure, and diet. Mean estimated length at birth was 146.9 cm, while maximum length was 325 cm for males and 313 cm for females; small sample sizes precluded detailed examination of sexual dimorphism. Age estimates for 33 individuals (14 males, 17 females, 2 unknown sex) indicated a maximum age of 13 years (males) and 17 years (females), respectively; the oldest animal was 19 years (unknown sex). Mean length and age at attainment of sexual maturity were estimated at 280 cm and 7.1 years in males and at 282 cm and 7.7 years in females. Stomach contents from 27 individuals showed that diets of immature and mature males and females overlapped and consisted predominantly of cephalopods. Reported strandings decreased between 2000 and 2017, possibly due to a lack of reporting associated with a ban on driving on beaches or related to the collapse of the local “chokka” squid (Loligo reynaudii) fishery in 2014–2015.  相似文献

Laboratory germinated seedlings of Acer negundo grown under controlled environmental conditions showed patterns of decreasing cell length (tracheids) with decrease in length of growing season of parental tree's habitat. Populations tested represented a range in latitude of 15 degrees (Texas to Canada) and the results indicate populational response to shorter growing seasons being reflected in xylem development.  相似文献

A new subgenus, Huaius n. subgen. of the genus Pterostichus, is described to deal with the following three new species of ground beetles which were recently discovered from limestone caves in Central China: Pterostichus (Huaius) caoi n. sp. (Cave Lijia Dong in Yichang, Hubei Province), Pterostichus (Huaius) tiankeng n. sp. (Cave Xigou Dong in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province) and Pterostichus (Huaius) yuae n. sp. (Cave Didonghe Dong in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province). This new subgenus is not closely allied to any lineage of Chinese Pterostichus. The pronotal structure of Huaius has the most peculiar morphological characteristics, lacking lateromarginal borders and without grooves on the portion of basal foveae. All members of Huaius are de-pigmented, almost blind and extremely troglomorphic. This is the first report of cave-adapted pterostichine beetles from Asia.  相似文献

KIR3DL3 is a framework gene of the Leukocyte Receptor Complex, present in all individuals and haplotypes analysed to date. We describe 17 novel KIR3DL3 alleles, including seven single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) positions within the coding region. Sequence variation within introns included a VNTR within intron 1. As KIR3DL3 mRNA is known to be expressed in decidual NK cells, we investigated the impact of KIR3DL3 allelic variation on pre-eclampsia. No statistical difference in allele frequency or polymorphism was observed between pre-eclampsia patient and control cohorts. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis of exonic SNPs suggested that recombination may be a mechanism of generating sequence diversity within KIR3DL3. A potential recombination hotspot was located within intron 5. A strong LD was detected between polymorphism in exon 6 of KIR3DL3 and the KIR gene −2DL3 or -2DS2 loci, which define the centromeric end of two main haplotypes (A and B) of the KIR cluster. Comparison of primate KIR sequences indicated that the Ig domains of KIR3DL3 are highly conserved between chimpanzee, gorilla and humans. Investigation of KIR3DL3 dN/dS ratios indicated a greater level of synonymous mutations consistent with purifying selection, although positive selection was detected acting on two sites within the stem region.Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

In the polymerizations of alanine, γ-ethyl glutamate, and leucine N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA's) initiated by tertiary amines and some secondary amines such as N-methyl-L -alanine dialkylamide, a stereoselectivity was observed: the polymerization rates of L - and D -NCA's were identical to each other and larger than that of DL -NCA. However, this selectivity was not observed in the polymerizations of valine and isoleucine NCA's initiated by N-methyl-L -alanine dialkylamide. The stereoselective polymerizations of valine and isoleucine NCA's were induced only with tetriary amines such as tri-n-butylamine. N-Methyl-L -alanine di-alkylamide has been shown to initiate the polymerization of usual α-amino acid NCA according to the activated-NCA mechanism, but it initiated the polymerizations of valine and isoleucine NCA's according to the primary amine-type mechanism. This is because in the latter NCA's the N–H group is masked by the adjacent Cβ-branched alkyl substituent against the approach of the secondary amine. Poly(DL -alanine)s produced in the stereoselective polymerization had higher viscosities and were more stereoblock-like than those produced without the stereoselectivity. These experimental results indicate that the stereoselective polymerization is possible only when the polymerization proceeds through the activated-NCA mechanism.  相似文献

Genotypes with extreme phenotypes are valuable for studying ‘difficult’ quantitative traits. Genomic prediction (GP) might allow the identification of such extremes by phenotyping a training population of limited size and predicting genotypes with extreme phenotypes in large sequences of germplasm collections. We tested this approach employing seedling root traits in maize and the extensively genotyped Ames Panel. A training population made up of 384 inbred lines from the Ames Panel was phenotyped by extracting root traits from images using the software program aria . A ridge regression best linear unbiased prediction strategy was used to train a GP model. Genomic estimated breeding values for the trait ‘total root length’ (TRL) were predicted for 2431 inbred lines, which had previously been genotyped by sequencing. Selections were made for 100 extreme TRL lines and those with the predicted longest or shortest TRL were validated for TRL and other root traits. The two predicted extreme groups with regard to TRL were significantly different (= 0.0001). The difference in predicted means for TRL between groups was 145.1 cm and 118.7 cm for observed means, which were significantly different (= 0.001). The accuracy of predicting the rank between 1 and 200 of the validation population based on TRL (longest to shortest) was determined using a Spearman correlation to be ρ = 0.55. Taken together, our results support the idea that GP may be a useful approach for identifying the most informative genotypes in sequenced germplasm collections to facilitate experiments for quantitative inherited traits.  相似文献

The dinoflagellate Amylax triacantha is known to retain plastids of cryptophyte origin by engulfing the mixotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum, itself a consumer of cryptophytes. However, there is no information on the fate of the prey's organelles and the photosynthetic performance of the newly retained plastids in A. triacantha. In this study, we conducted a starvation experiment to observe the intracellular organization of the prey's organelles and temporal changes in the photosynthetic efficiency of acquired plastids in A. triacantha. The ultrastructural observations revealed that while the chloroplast‐mitochondria complexes and nucleus of cryptophyte were retained by A. triacantha, other ciliate organelles were digested in food vacuoles. Acquired plastids were retained in A. triacantha for about 1 mo and showed photosynthetic activities for about 18 d when measured by a pulse‐amplitude modulation fluorometer.  相似文献

KIR2DL5 alleles were physically linked to alleles at adjacent KIR loci to define this region of KIR haplotypes in 55 gene-positive random African Americans. The majority carried KIR2DL5B. Three KIR2DL5A and six KIR2DL5B alleles that have been previously described and 11 novel KIR2DL5 alleles were identified by DNA sequencing. Novel alleles included variation that may impact promoter activity; two alleles carried nonsynonymous coding region variation. Based on linkage with KIR2DS1, KIR2DS3, KIR2DS5, KIR2DL2, KIR2DL3, and KIR3DS1 alleles, seven haplotypes of KIR2DL5A and 23 haplotypes of KIR2DL5B were observed. The phylogenetic relationships among the KIR2DL5 alleles predicted their association with either KIR2DS3 (six alleles) or KIR2DS5 (seven alleles). All of the KIR2DL5A alleles were linked either to KIR3DS1*01301 or KIR3DS1*049N. The majority of the KIR2DL5B alleles were linked to seven KIR2DL2 alleles; two were linked to a novel allele of KIR2DL3. These findings underscore the diversity of KIR haplotypes present in this population.  相似文献

The original material of Quercus undulata Torr. was collected by Edwin James on Major Long's expedition to the Rockies in 1820. The type locality was stated by Torrey as “sources of the Canadian and the Rocky Mountains.” Evidence is here adduced that the type locality is on Ute Creek, a tributary of the Canadian River, in northeastern New Mexico. The site was found to harbor Q, gambelii, Q. grisea, and numerous intermediate hybrid forms. Certain of the latter match the type of Q. undulata quite closely. The type sheet includes three elements—a branchlet regarded as the type, a twig of Q. grisea, and an isolated acorn of Q. havardii. Torrey's new species was illustrated by a figure which does not closely resemble the type, but which is more similar to Q. havardii. The acorn of Q. havardii on the type sheet must have been collected in the Texas Panhandle or western Oklahoma, where Long's party would have encountered this species. In my opinion, Torrey's figure could have been drawn from a specimen collected there, which, except for the isolated acorn, has since been lost.  相似文献

Forty-nine populations of nine species of North American cave crickets (genera Euhadenoecus and Hadenoecus) have been studied for genetic variation at 41 loci by electrophoresis. Wright's FST, Slatkin's Nm* gene-flow estimator, and Nei's genetic distances (D) have been used to compare closely related species that have different ecological requirements (cave vs. forest species), distribution patterns, and/or different degrees of geographic isolation among populations. Cave and epigean (noncave) species differ greatly in their levels of genetic differentiation. Cave species have lower rates of gene exchange (low Nm, high D, and FST) than epigean species. Within cave species the degree of genetic differentiation among populations is correlated with the limestone structure of the area where the species occur. Species or groups of populations inhabiting areas where the limestone is continuous and highly fissured (e.g., H. subterraneus populations in the Mammoth Cave region) are genetically less differentiated than are populations occurring in regions where the limestone distribution is more fragmented, such as the Appalachian Ridge where E. fragilis occurs; this effect is more extreme in Central Tennessee where genetically differentiated E. insolitus populations occur only a few kilometers apart. This suggests that epigean dispersal through forest habitat in cave-dwelling species is negligable. For forest species, the data indicate relatively recent radiation with ongoing gene exchange among populations. For cave species, the distribution of protein polymorphisms is apparently more a function of historical patterns of gene exchange rather than current gene exchange. Phylogenetic relationships were studied using cluster analyses (UPGMA and Wagner algorithms) of Nei's and Edwards' genetic distances and multivariate analysis (correspondence analysis) of the raw allele frequencies. Different algorithms result in branching patterns that are similar but not entirely concordant with one another or with the phylogeny based on morphology.  相似文献

Root growth has a fundamental role in nitrogen (N) use efficiency. Nevertheless, little is known about how modern breeding progress has affected root growth and its responses to N supply. The root and shoot growth of a core set of 11 representative Chinese maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids released between 1973 and 2009 were investigated under high N (4 mmol L−1, HN) and low N (0.04 mmol L−1, LN) levels in a solution culture system. Compared with LN, HN treatment decreased root dry weight (RDW), the root: shoot ratio (R/S), and the relative growth rate for root dry weight (RGRroot), but increased the total root length (TRL) and the total lateral root length (LRL). The total axial root length (ARL) per plant was reduced under HN, mostly in hybrids released before the 1990s. The number of seminal roots (SRN) was largely unaffected by different N levels. More recently released hybrids showed higher relative growth rates in the shoot under both HN and LN. However, the roots only showed increased RGR under HN treatment. Correspondingly, there was a positive linear relationship with the year of hybrid release for TRL, LRL and ARL under HN treatment. Together, these results suggest that while shoot growth of maize has improved, its root growth has only improved under high N conditions over the last 36 years of selective breeding in China. Improving root growth under LN conditions may be necessary to increase the N use efficiency of maize.  相似文献

In Japan, a Mycobacterium marinum‐like mycobacterium was isolated from the yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata. The species was identified as M. marinum by a commercial mycobacterial DNA‐DNA hybridization kit. Nevertheless, PCR restriction analysis of the DNA of its RNA polymerase β‐subunit gene definitively showed that this Mycobacterium sp. was M. ulcerans. PCR analysis revealed the genotypic characteristics of M. ulcerans in the Mycobacterium sp., only the mup053 gene sequence being absent, as has been found previously in other piscine mycobacteria such as M. marinum strains DL240490 and DL045 and M. pseudoshottsii. With one exception, this Mycobacterium sp. and M. pseudoshottsii had identical 16S rRNA gene sequences, which is also probably true of M. marinum strains DL240490 and DL045. Similarly, according to comparisons of the 16S rRNA gene, ITS region, and hsp65 gene sequences, this Mycobacterium sp. is more closely related to M. pseudoshottsii than to M. ulcerans or M. marinum. A PCR product of approximately 2000 bp was amplified from region of difference 9 in the Mycobacterium sp. The nucleotide sequence revealed insertion of IS2404, the sequence of which is 1366 bp long. The novel single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in this region distinguished this Mycobacterium sp. from M. marinum strain DL240490 and M. pseudoshottsii. The present findings raise the possibility that these species have a common ancestor. Further studies are required to improve our understanding of the relationship between their geographical origin and genetic diversity.  相似文献

To make long-term predictions using present quantitative genetic theory it is necessary to assume that the genetic variance–covariance matrix ( G ) remains constant or at least changes by a constant fraction. In this paper we examine the stability of the genetic architecture of two traits known to be subject to natural selection; femur length and ovipositor length in two species of the cricket Allonemobius. Previous studies have shown that in A. fasciatus and A. socius natural selection favours an increased body size southwards but a decreased ovipositor length. Such countergradient selection should tend to favour a change in G . In the total sample of eight populations of A. socius and one of A. fasciatus we show that there is significant variation in all genetic covariance components, i.e. VA for body size, VA for ovipositor length, and CovA. This variation results entirely from an increase in the covariances of A. fasciatus. However, although larger, these components are approximately proportionally increased, thereby leading to no statistically significant change in the genetic correlation. A proportional increase in the covariance components is consistent with changes resulting from genetic drift. On the other hand, the genetic covariance components are significantly correlated with the length of the growing season suggesting that the change in the genetic architecture is the result of selection and drift.  相似文献

The macaque fossils, including mandible fragments, were discovered for the first time from the Taedong River Basin around Pyongyang (TRBP) (the Chongphadae Cave, Hwangju County; the Taehung Cave, Sangwon County; the Maeri Cave, Sungho County), the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which represent the first recognized occurrences of fossil M. mulatta in DPRK. Although the only available skull specimens are the mandible including the teeth, the materials display some mandibular and dental feature combinations that might belong to the known species of Macaca mulatta. This discovery indicates that TRBP may be the richest area of Macacina fossils and an evolutionary center for macaques in DPRK. Radiometric dating of the Chongphadae Cave sediment Layer 12 and Layer 13 yielded 34770–27800 and 24980–21340 cal yr BP respectively.  相似文献

A dense late Neogene history of pocket gophers from the Meade Basin of south-western Kansas and north-western Oklahoma preserves a detailed record of size change, as indicated by mean length of the lower fourth premolar. A ‘time for space substitution’ interpretation results in the tentative recognition of a pattern analogous to character displacement, in which the small to medium-sized Pliogeomys buisi, P. louderbachi, Geomys minor and G. floralindae are considered ecological analogues and treated as a single ecological entity, Avatar A. The larger G. jacobi and G. quinni are combined as Avatar B. Statistical analyses confirm that populations of Avatar A are of equal size when allochronic from Avatar B, and significantly smaller when synchronic (and sympatric) with Avatar B. However, this pattern is complicated by the observation that Avatar A began dwarfing before the appearance of Avatar B. This historical perspective suggests that static size patterns among modern taxa may have a complex history. Occasional diminutive geomyid transients (G. adamsi, Thomomys cf talpoides) are always paired with significantly larger, medium-sized Geomys. Although a random walk explanation for the pattern of size changes is unlikely, we are currently unable to distinguish between environmental change and competition as the likely forcing mechanisms.  相似文献
