The length and frequency of stomata on leaf surfaces were examined as rapid techniques for future identification of ploidy level of Acacia mearnsii (de Wild). Diploid (2 n  = 2 x  = 26) and tetraploid (2 n  = 4 x  = 52) plants were germinated from chipped seed at 25°C and grown under nursery conditions. After one month, measurements showed that the mean stomatal length was 27.17 ± 0.474 µm for diploids and 40.24 ± 0.521 µm for tetraploids and these differed significantly from each other ( P  < 0.001). The frequency of stomata per leaf surface was shown to decrease significantly ( P  < 0.001) as the ploidy level increased, with a mean of 22.11 ± 0.495 for diploids and 10.26 ± 0.495 for tetraploids. It was concluded that stomatal length and stomatal frequency are rapid indirect methods to identify ploidy level in black wattle.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 177–181.  相似文献

The genera Lychnophoriopsis and Paralychnophora are endemic to Brazilian 'campo rupestre' in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia. To analyse the status of the cytotaxonomy of these genera, we carried out chromosome counts on several species. Two chromosome numbers were obtained for four species of Paralychnophora : 2 n  = 36 and 2 n  = 38. For three species of Lychnophoriopsis , only 2 n  = 36 was observed. The chromosome size (1.0–2.58 µm) and morphology (mainly metacentric, with some submetacentric) were analysed in four species of Paralychnophora and showed relative constancy .   © 2007 The Linnean Society of London. Until recently, Sellocharis paradoxa Taubert, the only species of this Genisteae genus, was known solely by the isotypes. Recent new collections in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, have enabled data on chromosome number and karyotype morphology to be obtained for the first time. S. paradoxa has 2 n  = 20 chromosomes, and a bimodal asymmetrical karyotype, composed of one pair of long ( c . 6.3 µm) metacentric, five pairs of shorter acrocentric, and four pairs of shorter telocentric chromosomes ranging from c . 3.7 to 2.7 µm. The chromosome number and karyotype morphology of S. paradoxa do not fit into the Genisteae pattern. Existing information is so far insufficient to answer evolutionary questions about its origin and phylogenetic relationships, but the uniqueness of this taxon, first indicated by its peculiar leaf arrangement, and now supported by its uncommon karyological constitution, strongly suggests that the suprageneric taxonomic position of S. paradoxa should be re-evaluated.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 223–226.  相似文献

Pollen grains of six species of Gnetum , G. parvifolium , G. hainanense , G. luofuense , G. pendulum , G. cleistostachyum and G. montanum , collected from China were examined using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Pollen grains of Gnetum are subspheroidal or irregular-apolar, inaperturate, 11.21–22.44 µm in long axis and 9.34–20.47 µm in short axis. The exine surface is covered with spinules, 0.50(0.30–0.71) µm long spaced on average 1.12(0.81–1.46) µm apart. The exine is about 0.55 µm thick and comprises ectexine and endexine. The ectexine includes a thin tectum and an infratectal granular layer. The tectum protrudes outwards, forming the spinules. The endexine is composed of discontinuous lamellae, with lacunae between lamellae. The pollen grains of Gnetum are compared with those of Ephedra and Welwitschia , and also those of the ANITA Group of angiosperms, including Amborellaceae, Nymphaeales, Illiciales, Trimeniaceae and Austrobaileyaceae. The exine ultrastructures of Gnetum , Ephedra and Welwitschia are quite similar, consisting of tectum, granular layer and lamellated endexine. The exine ultrastructure of Gnetum is also similar to that of Nymphaea colorata (Nymphaeaceae) in the transitional region between the proximal and distal poles, but differs from that of Amborellaceae, Illicium religiosum (Illiciaceae), Schisandra (Schisandraceae), Trimeniaceae and Austrobaileyaceae. This comparison of exine ultrastructure provides new evidence for consideration of the relationship between Gnetum and the ANITA Group.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 146 , 415–425.  相似文献

Mitotic chromosomes of eight populations of six species of Vernonia sensu Baker (Asteraceae, Vernonieae, section Lepidaploa , group Axilliflorae ) were studied to assess the validity of maintaining the genus as proposed currently ( sensu Baker) or of splitting it into several smaller genera ( sensu Robinson). The species were collected in areas of 'cerrado' and 'campo rupestre' in southern and central-western Brazil. The chromosome numbers were 2 n  = 20–40 and karyotypic analysis showed a predominance of metacentric chromosomes, with some submetacentrics. B chromosomes were seen in one population of V. geminata . The chromosomes varied in length from 0.9 to 4.6 µm, with a total chromatin length of 29.7–45.0 µm and a symmetry index of 41.2–46.9%. The intrachromosomal asymmetry index varied from 0.13 to 0.29, and the interchromosomal asymmetry index varied from 0.15 to 0.21. The dispersion diagram showed that population 1 of V. geminata had the most asymmetrical karyotype. These results do not provide sufficient evidence for a conclusive cytotaxonomic discussion of Vernonia , mainly because of the impossibility of associating any infrageneric group with specific karyotypic characters, and also because of the small number of species analysed so far.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London. The tribe Naucleeae has recently been recircumscribed on the basis of both morphological and molecular [ rbcL , trnT-F , internal transcribed spacer (ITS)] evidence, and has been found to be the sister group of the tribe Hymenodictyeae Razafim. & B. Bremer. In order to find pollen morphological support for this new classification, the pollen and orbicules of 65 species, representing 23 Naucleeae and the two Hymenodictyeae genera, were investigated by scanning electron and light microscopy. Naucleeae pollen is very small (< 20 µm) to small (20–30 µm) and its shape in equatorial view is suboblate to spheroidal or, more rarely, subprolate. Three compound apertures are present, each comprising a long and narrow ectocolpus, a circular to slightly lolongate mesoporus, and an often H-shaped endoaperture. The sexine ornamentation is perforate, rugulate, or (micro)reticulate, and supratectal elements are always absent. Apart from the variation in sexine ornamentation, the tribe is rather stenopalynous. The pollen of Hymenodictyeae is very similar to that of Naucleeae. The H-shaped endoapertures often observed probably form a synapomorphy for the clade comprising Naucleeae and Hymenodictyeae. Our pollen morphological observations are not in conflict with the widened delimitation of Naucleeae. Unambiguous pollen support for the recent subtribal or generic concepts of Naucleeae could not be found because of a lack of variation of pollen characters within the tribe. Orbicules are invariably present in the ten Naucleeae taxa investigated. They are spheroidal and smooth or irregularly folded.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 329–341.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are thought to have remained asexual for 400 million years, although recent studies have suggested that considerable genetic and phenotypic variation could potentially exist in populations. A brief discussion of these multigenomic organisms is presented.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79 , 59–60.  相似文献

Several isolated marattialean synangia and sporangia are reported from coal balls collected from Coal Seam No.1 (C605) in the uppermost Permian Wangjiazhai Formation in Guizhou Province, south-western China. The synangia are radially symmetrical with diameters between 0.8 and 1.2 mm and are 1.7 mm long, consisting of 3–4 elongate sporangia that are fused basally, free distally and possess a pointed apex. The outer-facing sporangial wall is 4–5 cells thick and conspicuously differentiated. Spores are trilete, have a granular ornamentation and are nearly round equatorially with a diameter of 55–60 µm. Comparisons with other anatomically preserved Palaeozoic marattialean synangia from the Euramerican and Cathaysian floras permit their assignment to the genus of Scolecopteris (Zenker) Millay. In this species the thick, outer-facing sporangial walls and large trilete spores are features consistent with those of the Oliveri Group within Scolecopteris , a group that has previously been considered primitive within this genus. Distinctions from all other previously recognized species within the Oliveri Group lead to the creation of a new species, S. guizhouensis sp. nov. This species is the youngest of the reported species of Scolecopteris recognized from the Euramerican and Cathaysian floras, and provides important evidence on the organization of marattialean ferns from the Upper Permian strata of south China.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 279–288.  相似文献

Analysis of the stem vasculature of the American climbing palm Desmoncus reveals structural features differing significantly from the Old World rattan genus Calamus . Desmoncus has a more directly continuous vascular system but nevertheless shows a vessel distribution that makes for high hydraulic resistance in the axial xylem. Desmoncus is like Calamus in having a single very wide metaxylem vessel in each central axial bundle and is also without direct vascular contact between protoxylem and metaxylem tracheary elements. However, in Desmoncus the stem vascular bundle system resembles that in tree palms (as has been described in the model palm Rhapis excelsa ) in having a continuing axial bundle that branches from each outgoing leaf trace together with a large number of bridge connections between leaf traces and peripheral axial bundles. Resistance to axial water transport is, however, evident in the narrowness of the continuing metaxylem elements in the peripheral stem vascular region. Desmoncus has scalariform perforation plates with few thickening bars in the metaxylem vessels, unlike the simple perforation plates found in Calamus . Thus, Desmoncus shows only limited convergence in stem vascular architecture toward the extreme modifications found in Calamus . This is not unexpected since it is clear that the climbing habit evolved independently in the two genera.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 142 , 243−254.  相似文献

Swertia barunensis P. Chassot sp. nov. from Nepal is described and illustrated. It was collected in 1997 in an alpine meadow in the Makalu Barun National Park at an elevation of 4200 m. It belongs to Swertia section Macranthos T.-N. Ho & S.-W. Liu and resembles S. pseudohookeri H. Smith, from which it differs mainly by the shape of the nectary and the exomorphic seed structure. A key to all the species of sect. Macranthos is provided. The affinities of S. barunensis with some other taxa in the subtribe Swertiinae (Griseb.) Rchb. are also briefly discussed.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141, 389–394.  相似文献

The spider genus Weintrauboa new genus (Araneae, Pimoidae) is described to place two species of pimoids from Japan and adjacent islands that were formerly classified in the linyphiid genus Labulla . Weintrauboa contortipes (Karsch) new comb., the type species, and W. chikunii (Oi) new comb. are redescribed. Parsimony analysis of morphological characters provides robust support for the monophyly of the genus Weintrauboa and corroborates the monophyly of Pimoa , Pimoidae, and the clade Linyphiidae plus Pimoidae. New diagnoses for Pimoa and Pimoidae are provided.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 139 , 261–281  相似文献

Dioon argenteum sp. nov. (Zamiaceae) is described from northern Oaxaca, México. Flat leaves, and persistently tomentose, slightly imbricate leaflets with marginal prickles characterize this species. The specific epithet argenteum was chosen to describe the silver appearance of the persistent tomentum covering the new leaves. D. argenteum appears to have affinities with D. purpusii and D. califanoi.   © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 471–476.  相似文献

Exceptionally well-preserved remains belonging to the Australian Early Cretaceous (Albian) ichthyosaur Platypterygius longmani Wade, 1990 are described in detail. The material is used to reconstruct some of the cranial musculature and provide a brief functional analysis of the skull and mandible. Preparation of specimens using acetic acid and application of high-resolution X-ray computed tomographic analyses has revealed many previously unrecorded anatomical details, including the absence of a coronoid and squamosal, and the presence of well-developed epipterygoid facets on the pterygoid and parietal (possibly indicating retention of an unossified epipterygoid element). Reconstruction of the jaw musculature suggests a well-developed m. adductor mandibulae internus pterygoideus (serving to close the jaws against inertia and drag of the surrounding water), and possibly an m. intramandibularis (acting to accentuate static pressure along the elongate mandible when the jaws were closed). Despite its large size (maximum total body length of around 7 m), the long, narrow snout of P. longmani (together with preserved gut contents) indicates selective feeding on relatively small prey such as fish, small tetrapods and probably cephalopods. Large orbits are indicative of a visual hunter, but extensive external passages for nerves and blood vessels might suggest the presence of a dermal sensory system. The massive stapes appears to have lost all sound conductive function, serving primarily as structural support in the basicranial region.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 145 , 583–622.  相似文献

In many North American prairies, populations of Andropogon gerardii Vitman (Poaceae) are composed of hexaploid and enneaploid cytotypes (2 n  = 60, 90), with intermediates occurring occasionally. Under controlled pollination, the two common cytotypes can be crossed, producing progeny with a range of chromosome numbers. In an investigation of fertility and compatibilities of intermediate cytotypes, individuals with chromosome numbers between 60 and 90 were crossed with each other, with the 2 n  = 60 and 90 cytotypes, and with South American Andropogon species having 60 chromosomes. Regardless of cytotype, all A. gerardii plants had some fertility and virtually all crosses produced seeds. Cytotype is only partially predictive of fertility. Inter-specific hybrids between A. gerardii and South American hexaploid species were vigorous but sterile. Gene flow in natural A. gerardii populations of mixed cytotype probably involves plants of all cytotypes.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 95–103.  相似文献

We used RAPDs (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs) to investigate genetic diversity and its partition within and between three populations of Iris aphylla in Poland. Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) of 84 distinct RAPD multiband genotypes revealed higher variation within populations (77.2%) than genetic differentiation between them (22.8%, P  < 0.002). Values of genetic diversity indices ( H ) were similar in all three sites (0.21–0.24). The differentiation of the populations corresponded to low average gene flow ( Nm  = 0.81). Our results indicated that genetic diversity was independent of population size. We concluded that although sexual reproduction and gene flow between populations of I. aphylla were very limited, they preserved high levels of genetic diversity. Relatively large number of seeds, which migrated in the past to populations, as well as patterns of reproduction and life history of I. aphylla may explain this situation.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 142 , 65–72.  相似文献
