Individuals of both dispersal and non-dispersal types (disperser and non-disperser) are found in a population, suggesting that each type has both costs and benefits for fitness. However, few studies have examined the trade-off between the costs and benefits for the types. Here, we artificially selected for walking distance, i.e., an indicator of dispersal ability, in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and established strains with longer (L-strains) or shorter (S-strains) walking distances. We then compared the frequency of predation by the assassin bug Amphibolus venator and the mating frequency of the selected strains. L-strain beetles suffered higher predation risk, than did S-strain beetles. L-strain males had significantly increased mating success compared to S-strain males, but females did not show a significant difference between the strains. The current results showed the existence of a trade-off between predation avoidance and mating success associated with dispersal types at a genetic level only in males. This finding can help to explain the maintenance of variation in dispersal ability within a population.  相似文献

The mating behavior of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), was observed under laboratory conditions. Pairs of adult virgin male and female beetles were placed in the wells of a polystyrene microtiter plate, one pair per well. The mating activity of each pair was recorded for 24?h. The mating behavior of the coffee berry borer was similar to that of other Scolytinae and was clearly divided into precopulatory, copulatory and postcopulatory phases. The beetles started to mate within a few hours of emergence. Repeated mating occurred during the 24-hour period and increased in frequency with age. However, we cannot address multiple matings in H. hampei, since we did not simulate the female-biased sex ratio of this species and the experimental design did not allow females to avoid additional mating attempts by males. In addition, further studies are necessary that focus on the effectiveness of sperm transmission and direct and indirect effects of multiple matings on the H. hampei females and their offspring.  相似文献

The factors maintaining sex chromosome meiotic drive, or sex ratio (SR), in natural populations remain uncertain. Coevolution between segregation distortion and modifiers should produce transient SR distortion while selection can result in a stable polymorphism. We hypothesize that if SR is maintained by selection, then phylogenetically related populations should exhibit similar SR frequency and intensity. Furthermore, when drive is present, females should mate with multiple males more often both to insure fertility and to increase the probability of producing male progeny. In this paper we report on variation in SR frequency and multiple mating among seven populations and three species of stalk-eyed flies, genus Cyrtodiopsis, from southeast Asia. Using a phylogenetic hypothesis based on 1100 bp of mtDNA sequence we find that while sex chromosome meiotic drive is present in all populations of C. whitei and C. dalmanni, the frequency and intensity of drive only differs between populations or species with greater than 4.8% sequence divergence. The frequency of females mating with multiple males is higher in populations with SR. In addition, SR males mate less often, possibly to compensate for sperm depletion. Our results suggest that sex chromosome drive is maintained by balancing selection in populations of C. whitei and C. dalmanni. Nevertheless, coevolution between drive and suppressors deserves further study.  相似文献

Cultivation of herbicide-tolerant strain of GM corn involves applications of a non-selective herbicide. Mortality of arthropod natural enemies resulting from the application of herbicides is negligible. But nothing is known how herbicides affect the behaviour of natural enemies and thus alter their pest control efficacy. Aim of the study was to assess the effect of the Roundup residues on the predatory, defensive, locomotory and reproductive behaviour of epigeic spiders and carabid beetles. Specimens of Pardosa agricola (Araneae: Lycosidae) and Poecilus cupreus (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were exposed for 2 h to the fresh and 1-day old residues of Roundup Biaktiv (Monsanto, IPA 480 g/l). Predation rate was similar for all treatments in both spiders and beetles. Spiders did not avoid surface treated with herbicide residues more than the control surface, but beetles slightly avoided surface with fresh residues. The speed of locomotion of spiders was not altered by herbicide residues, but beetles exposed to residues crawled at significantly lower speed than the control group. Herbicide residues did not affect the escape efficacy of spiders from a predator. Residues had no detrimental effect on the courtship, mating frequency and duration in spiders. Roundup Bioaktiv thus appears to be harmless to lycosid spiders and only slightly harmful to carabid beetles. The biological control potential of both predators should not be reduced by the application of Roundup Bioaktiv.  相似文献

Lariophagus distinguendus Förster (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is a generalist solitary ectoparasitoid that parasitizes the immature stages of at least 11 foodstuff beetles from five families, including species developing in the seeds of Poaceae, Fabaceae and in dried natural products. In L. distinguendus, male wing fanning is a key phase in the courtship sequence and is elicited by a female-borne sex pheromone. However, studies aimed at understanding the role of wing vibration in L. distinguendus during courtship are lacking. In this research, the wing fanning performances of the L. distinguendus male towards other females and males were analyzed through high-speed video recordings and examined in relation to mating success. Only small differences were found between the fanning characteristics displayed toward females and young males, highlighting that young males are really perceived as females by older males. Male mating success was affected by the quality of the wing fanning in the courtship phase. Indeed, both immediately after the female perception and during mating attempts, fanning before a successful courtship differed compared to wing fanning performed prior to an unsuccessful courtship in terms of their mean frequency, but not their amplitude. Overall, our work increases knowledge of the courtship behavior of L. distinguendus and highlights the crucial importance of wing fanning among the range of sensory modalities used in the sexual communication of this parasitic wasp.  相似文献

For more than 100 years it has been known that the sclerotised median lobe of beetles harbours a membranous structure (the "internal sac" or "endophallus") which is everted during copula inside the female genital tract. In order to explore the functional role of this structure and those associated with it, we cryofixed copulating pairs of Donacia semicuprea and Lilioceris lilii and studied the relative position of the elements of the copulatory apparatus of males and females by micro-computer-tomography.We found that the everted endophallus fills the lumen of the bursa copulatrix completely. Our data suggest that in Lilioceris lilii the tip of the sclerotised distal part of the ejaculatory duct, the flagellum, is positioned exactly over the opening of the spermathecal duct inside the bursa copulatrix. The mouth of the bursa copulatrix in Donacia semicuprea is armed with a strong muscle ring, and the whole wall of the bursa is covered externally with a layer of muscle fibres. These morphological differences correspond with differences in mating behaviour: In reed beetles (Donaciinae), females seemingly can control mating to a higher degree than in lily beetles (Lilioceris spp.).  相似文献

NeonateTribolium castaneum larvae were treated with 0.5 ppm pirimiphos methyl, 1.6×104 spores/gNosema whitei alone and 0.5 ppm+1.6×104 spores/g combined and the resulting adult mortality recorded. All treatments increased the mortality of the beetles significantly (P<0.01), though the combined dose gave a lower mortality than either the microsporidian or the insecticide alone.   相似文献

In the fell-field habitat at 140–270 m altitude on the sub-Antarctic Ile de la Possession, Iles Crozet, the dimorphic beetle Amblystogenium pacificum Putzeys (Coleoptera: Carabidae) was studied monthly throughout the southern year 1993–1994 by timed hand collections involving turning stones on the rocky fell-field. There were many mating couples and females containing well-developed eggs in every month and the species reproduced throughout the year, with no evidence of a winter cessation of egg production. However, the frequency of mating couples was about twice as great in the summer half-year (October–March) as in the winter half (April–September). Relatively small differences in monthly mean temperatures between the summer and winter at Iles Crozet render all-year reproduction not unexpected when comparisons are made with the temperatures and phenology of Carabidae in cool habitats in other parts of the world. Mating pairs were collected at unusually high frequencies for carabids. The frequency of such pairs, taken per unit effort by hand collecting, was highest in October–December, lower from January to May and intermediate from June to September. Comparison of beetles taken as solitary, non-mating individuals with those taken as mating couples showed that in summer, females of the black morph of this dimorphic species were more frequently involved in mating than expected, but no differences were detected in winter. Female beetles were divided into younger individuals (putative age 1–2 years) and older females (putative age 3–5 years or more) by the amount of claw-wear on individuals of this species. This division indicated that about 40% of the older females showed no egg development when captured, but only about 20% of the younger females were non-breeding. However, of the reproducing beetles, young and old females matured similar numbers of eggs. An altitude transect showed that the proportion of the black morph increased significantly with altitude. Studies at 140–270 m showed that a significantly smaller proportion of the older females of the brown morph were breeding than in the younger brown individuals, and this effect was particularly evident in the colder winter period. No such age differences existed amongst the black morph.  相似文献

A partial skull and articulated postcranial elements of Megantereon whitei have been recorded during the 1950s from a karst deposit in the Monte Argentario area (Grosseto). These fossils recently became available for study. The bones are quite well preserved, included in a hard reddish matrix with calcareous clasts. The fossil is part of a faunal assemblage referred to the Late Villafranchian (Early Pleistocene). M. whitei from Monte Argentario is characterised by elongated upper canines, stronger than those of the Upper Valdarno (Tuscany) specimens and similar to the Pirro Nord (Apulia) fossil. The manus is robust, the first phalanges are quite long in comparison to the metacarpals. The Early Pleistocene European M. whitei represents an African element that took part in the faunal dispersal from Africa to Europe that occurred at the Plio-Pleistocene transition.  相似文献

Globally, the commercialisation of plants as observed in their uses by many industries such as the cosmeceutical, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical ones is gaining more interest and popularity. Mondia whitei is a popular medicinal plant which is endemic to Africa. Since antiquity, M. whitei has been used by African people to treat various ailments. The roots were used for the treatment of anorexia, stress, bilharzia and sexual dysfunction as well as for general aches and pains. Researchers have evaluated the efficacy of most of these claims by screening the M. whitei for biological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anthelmintic as well as aphrodisiac efficacy. Furthermore, M. whitei has horticultural, nutritional and other socio-cultural values as reported in countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Malawi. As a result of its numerous uses across the African continent, we attempt to explore and assess the economic potential of M. whitei with emphasis on medicinal values. The root of M. whitei is the most popular organ used in traditional medicine; consequently, this has resulted in the species becoming rare or threatened with extinction in the wild. Several authors have suggested solutions such as plant or plant part substitution to overcome the over-harvesting problem. The application of biotechnology techniques such as micropropagation and hairy roots also remain viable options which are presently being utilised to a lesser extent. Nevertheless, the sustainable harvesting and feasible conservation strategy for the species remains a major challenge. It is strongly recommended that in as much as the economic potential of M. whitei should be exploited, more detailed attention and studies should be geared towards its conservation. In order to ensure sustainable use and to derive maximum economic benefits, it is necessary to have empirical information detailing its ethno-botanical values, conservation status and commercial potential.  相似文献

Evolution of female mating preferences in stalk-eyed flies   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Sensory exploitation predicts that female mate preferences existbefore the evolution of exaggerated male ornaments. We testedthis prediction by estimating female preference functions, rematingintervals, and copulation durations for three species of stalk-eyedflies. Two species, Cyrtodiopsis whitei and C dalmanni, exhibitextreme sexual dimorphism in eye span, with eye stalks exceedingbody length in large males. In contrast, C quinqucguttata ofboth sexes possess short eye stalks. Maximum parsimony analysisof 437 basepairs of the 16S mitochondrial ribosomal RNA genefrom 6 Malaysian diopsids reveals that short, sexually monomorphiceye stalks are plesiomorphic in Cyrtodiopsis. Observations ofmultiple copulations by females in paired-choice mating chambersindicated that female C whitei and C. dalmanni exhibit relativepreferences for longer eye stalks such that preference intensityincreases linearly with the difference in eye stalk length betweenmales. Females from the sexually monomorphic species showedno detectable preference for male eye stalk length. Female matingpreferences of bodi sexually dimorphic species exhibited significantrepeatability, as expected if genetic variation underlies thepreference. In addition, female C whitei and C. dalmanni exhibitedshorter copulations, mated more frequently, and rejected fewermating attempts than female C quinqueguttata. Thus, opportunitiesfor sperm competition have increased with acquisition of femalepreferences. We conclude that female sensory bias for maleswith long eye span did not exist in a common ancestor to thesespecies. Instead, female preference and remating propensityeither coevolved with eye span dimorphism or evolved after maleeye stalks elongated.  相似文献

Filariomyces forficulae occurs commonly on the earwig, Labidura riparia, in Florida. The hypopial stage of a mite, Histiostoma sp., often associated with L. riparia is also sometimes infected by the same fungus. Some other earwig species that occur with L. riparia were not found to be hosts. Sites of fungal infection on the earwig were highly variable and influenced by several factors. F. forficulae was transmitted by several types of insect contact including mating with varying efficiencies and by a mechanical inoculation technique. Developmental time required by the fungus from ascospore to mature perithecia was 10–12 days at 24°C. In laboratory studies there were small but consistent differences between longevities of infected and noninfected groups of earwigs and infected populations of earwigs died sooner than noninfected ones. Infection resulted in differences in pattern of egg production; however, no numerically significant differences in total egg production or egg-hatching ability between the two groups were found.  相似文献

The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the most significant pest of field maize, Zea mays L. (Poaceae), in the USA. Maize plants expressing Bt toxins targeting the corn rootworm complex have been widely adopted and are the primary insecticidal control measure for this pest in North America. Insect resistance management tactics using various refuge structures have been adopted to ensure Bt products will retain durability. An assumption of the refuge strategy is that males and females emerging from Bt and refuge plantings mate randomly; this has not been tested in the field. We conducted cage studies using field populations of WCR in Indiana, USA, to generate empirical field data on mating rates between beetles emerging from Cry3Bb1‐expressing Bt and refuge maize plants. Two refuge configurations were tested; all refuge plants were labeled using the stable isotope 15N. This mark persists in adult beetles after eclosion, allowing for collection and analysis of isotopic ratios of all beetles. Additional data collected included adult emergence rates, timing and sex ratios for each of the treatments, and head capsule size and dry weights of beetles collected. Treatment had a significant effect on dry weight; mean dry weight decreased in Bt‐only treatments. Fisher's exact test of proportions of mating pairs of refuge and Bt insects indicated that mating was not random in 20% strip refuges and 5% seed blend treatments. We found high percentages of beetles that fed on Bt‐expressing plants as larvae, suggesting that mating between resistant beetles may not be rare even if random mating did occur.  相似文献

Analyses of proximate mechanisms that control mating and oviposition behaviours in insects are important because they link behavioural ecology and physiology. Recently, seed beetles have been used as models to study evolution of female multiple mating and cost of reproduction including mating. In the present study, we investigated the effects of biogenic amines into the abdomens of females of two Callosobruchus species, Callosobruchus chinensis and Callosobruchus maculatus, on mating receptivity and oviposition behaviour. In C. chinensis, injection of octopamine and tyramine reduced receptivity to mating and tyramine and serotonin increased the number of eggs laid. Similarly, injection of tyramine reduced the receptivity of females and increased the number of eggs laid by females of C. maculatus. These results show the possibility that biogenic amines control mating receptivity and oviposition behaviour in females of two Callosobruchus species.  相似文献

Tiphia vernalis Rohwer and Tiphia popilliavora Rohwer were introduced as biocontrol agents against Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman) and oriental beetles (Anomala orientalis Waterhouse). Studies have shown that under field conditions, T. vernalis parasitize Japanese beetles more often than oriental beetles. This study was done to understand how tiphiid wasps handle the two different host species and the influence of host defensive behaviors on the oviposition process of tiphiid wasps. The preovipositional behaviors performed by Tiphia wasps included: stinging, examining, moving soil, kneading, host-feeding, and host scraping. The frequency, sequence, and total time spent on each behavior before oviposition were scored and compared between two host species. The sequence and frequency of preovipositional behaviors performed by both Tiphia wasps did not show a difference between the two host species. However, female T. vernalis spent significantly longer time trying to sting oriental beetles than Japanese beetles in order to paralyze them. The time T. popilliavora spent on prestinging behaviors did not show a difference between Japanese and oriental beetles. The defensive behaviors performed by Japanese and oriental beetle grubs included: vigorous movements, rubbing their abdomen or head against the wasp’s abdomen, and biting at the attacking wasp. The frequency and total time spent on each defensive behavior was scored and compared between two host species. Overwintered, third instar oriental beetle grubs spent significantly longer time on defensive behaviors when they were attacked by T. vernalis which likely cause wasps to spend longer time trying to sting oriental beetle grubs. The active host resistance gained through behavioral defenses could make oriental beetle grubs less susceptible to T. vernalis attack than Japanese beetle grubs, especially under field conditions. Younger grubs attacked by T. popilliavora did not exhibit these differences.  相似文献

Tonic immobility (death-feigning) behavior of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is a predator defense mechanism; it is a reflex elicited when a beetle is jarred with the substrate, often a result of the activities of a predator. We previously demonstrated that the frequency of predation by a jumping spider, Hasarius adansoni, was significantly lower among beetles with higher frequencies and longer durations of tonic immobility (L-type) than those with lower frequencies and shorter durations of tonic immobility (S-type). However, we found that the population of L-type beetles is much smaller than that of S-type beetles in their natural habitat. Here we demonstrated that L-type beetles are significantly more sensitive to environmental stressors such as mechanical vibration and high or low temperatures. We measured expression levels of stress-responsive genes such as heat shock proteins (Hsps) and antioxidant enzymes in both types of beetles. Among the genes we investigated, only catalase gene expression levels were significantly higher in S-type than in L-type beetles. Furthermore, a similar difference in the gene expression was observed in the T. castaneum ortholog of the insect cytokine growth-blocking peptide (GBP) gene. These results indicate the possibility that high expression of catalase and GBP in S-type beetles contributes to augmentation of their anti-stress capacity and expansion of their population in their natural habitat.  相似文献

The mechanism of prey finding by adultHarmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) was investigated in the laboratory by offering beetles small gauze or polyethylene bags containing either aphid-infested leaves or uninfested leaves along with empty control bags. The beetles were attracted to bags containing aphid-infested leaves. It is suggested that adults ofH. axyridis use olfactory and visual cues to detect prey. Mate-searching by males and the mating receptivity of females were enhanced in the presence of an abundance of aphids. The presence of aphids, perceived by the sensory organs of the beetles, possibly influence behaviour other than prey-searching.  相似文献

Neoparasitylenchus amvlocercus sp. n. (Tylenchida: Nematodea) is described as a parasite of the singleleaf pinyon cone beetle, Conophthorus monophyllae (Scolytidae: Coleoptera) in California. In a sample of 21 beetles randomly selected from cones of Pinus monophylla, 62% were parasitized by N. amvlocercus. Heavily infected beetles showed a reduction in fat body, ovaries, and longevity. They were poorly coordinated, flew less, and showed a weaker flight than that of nonparasitized beetles. A summary of the effects of allantonematid nematodes on bark beetles is included and a synopsis of the nematodes occurring inside bark beetles is given, including a key to the genera of Allantonematidae parasitizing scolytids.  相似文献

Mondia whitei (Apocynaceae) is used in traditional medicine to treat nervous disorders. Previous studies have shown in vivo antidepressant-like activity in the forced swimming test and affinity to the serotonin transporter of an ethanolic leaf extract of M. whitei. The aim of this study was to isolate the compound(s) responsible for in-vitro serotonin transporter affinity in M.whitei. Bioassay guided isolation lead to the identification of the monoterpene lactone (−)-loliolide. An ethanol extract was prepared from dry leaves. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, extracted with water by liquid–liquid partitioning. This was followed by VLC fractionation. Through HPLC-UV separation the active compound was isolated and characterized by GC-MS, LC-MS and 1H-NMR. The activity of (−)-loliolide was tested in a serotonin transporter binding assay using [3H]-citalopram as ligand, giving an IC50-value of 997 µM, corresponding to a Ki-value of 409 µM. Loliolide is a non-nitrogenous compound and might bind to the transporter in a different way to nitrogen-containing inhibitors. The results provide a rationale for the use of M.whitei in the treatment of depression and other central nervous system diseases in traditional medicine.  相似文献

Ditylenchus dipsaci-infected and noninfected alfalfa plants in a naturally infested field were studied from July 1980 to September 1982. Forty-one percent of the plants died during the study. Ninety-seven percent of the plants that died were infected with D. dipsaci. Sixty-nine percent of the observed mortality occurred during winter. Forage yield of infected plants was significantly lower than yield of noninfected plants at each harvest. Stored carbohydrates in infected plants were significantly lower than in noninfected plants. In a controlled environment test, significantly greater mortality occurred in frozen severely infected plants than in frozen noninfected plants, while no mortality occurred in severely infected or noninfected plants that were not frozen. Both forage yield and stored carbohydrates were significantly lower in severely infected than noninfected, non-frozen plants. Mortality in greenhouse-grown plants that were transplanted to field plots was significantly greater in D. dipsaci-infected plants than in noninfected plants after one winter.  相似文献
