Summary Adrenals, pituitary glands, thyroids, testes and kidneys of metopirone-treated and control male lizards were studied by light microscopy. Pituitary-interrenal axis: A great hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the interrenal cells and the pituitary corticotrophs were found in the experimental group. Pituitary-thyroid axis: Metopirone-treated animals showed a moderate hypertrophy and degranulation of pituitary thyrotrophs, and signs of uneven hyperactivity of the thyroid. Pituitary-testicular axis: By effect of metopirone, a marked regression of pituitary interstitiotrophs and a virtual disappearance of the testicular interstitial gland took place. The second portion of the kidney sexual segments appeared degranulated as in castrated animals. The pituitary folliculotrophs and the seminiferous epithelium of the testis did not show alterations.  相似文献

Summary The pituitary glands of two urodelan species (Mertensiella caucasica, Triturus cristatus) and one caecilian species (Chthonerpeton indistinetum) were examined with histological (Alcian blue, Brookes' trichrome stain), enzyme histochemical (acid phosphatase, -naphthylacetate-esterase, acetylcholinesterase) and immunofluorescence techniques (anti-carp GTH, anti-ovine prolactin, anti-synthetic -MSH). In the pituitary gland of Mertensiella and Triturus six chromophilic cell types could be distinguished. A strong fluorescence was observed in the MSH-, GTH- and TSH-cells.In the pituitary gland of Chthonerpeton only five chromophilic cell types could be distinguished: in the rostral part of the pituitary gland the B3-cell; in the basal region of the central area the B2-cell; dorsocaudally the B1-cell. The acidophilic cells were found in the central and caudal part of the pars distalis. The basophils of the pars intermedia could be observed in the dorsocaudal part of the pituitary gland surrounding the neurohypophysis. All acidophilic cells showed a strong immunofluorescence with anti-ovine prolactin (LTH).  相似文献

Systematic administration of the enkephalin analog FK 33-824 was previously shown to stimulate PRL secretion and to inhibit ACTH secretion in man. Naloxone prevented the effect on PRL release, but not on ACTH release. In this study, the direct action of this analog on hormone release by rat anterior pituitary lobes invitro were investigated. 1 uM FK 33-824 inhibited basal ACTH secretion by anterior pituitary glands in vitro, while 0.1 uM and 1 uM attenuated the lysine vasopressin stimulated ACTH release. Naloxone did not reverse the inhibitory action of the analog on ACTH release. β-Endorphin (0.01 - 1 uM) did not directly affect ACTH release. Basal and dopamine-induced inhibition of PRL release by anterior pituitary glands was neither influenced by FK 33-824 (0.1 and 1 uM), nor by β-endorphin (0.1 and 1 uM) with or without bacitracin. This study shows that the long-acting met-enkephalin analog FK 33-824 differentially affects PRL and ACTH secretion by the pituitary gland. It seems to stimulate PRL release at a suprapituitary site and this action probably involves u opiate receptors, because naloxone prevents these stimulatory effects. The inhibitory effect of FK 33-824 on ACTH release, however, is mediated via a direct effect at the pituitary level, which does not involve u receptors, as naloxone did not prevent this effect. In this respect, its action differs from that of β-endorphin, which does not directly affect ACTH release by the anterior pituitary gland.  相似文献

Male. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 81 : 223–234 Cloacae from male Proteus anguinus were examined for the first time by light and electron microscopy. Male P. anguinus possess anterior and posterior ventral glands, dorsal and lateral pelvic glands, vent glands and Kingsbury’s glands as do Necturus males. However, male P. anguinus also possess the new additional cloacal glands found in females and which the author has called the ventral skin glands. Furthermore, the number, the length and the diameter of these tubular glands are higher in males. Therefore the inference is that these glands are sexually dimorphic glands.  相似文献

Cytoplasmic estrogen receptors were determined by the dextran-coated charcoal method in inguinal breast tissue of three groups of Balb/C female mice 6–8 weeks following subcutaneous implantation into the intact animals of three pituitary glands and three pieces of skeletal muscle (group I), three pituitary glands and three segments of hypothalamic tissue (group II), or three pieces of skeletal muscle (group III) obtained from animals of the same inbred strain as control. A circadian rhythm in estrogen receptor content was statistically quantified by cosinor analysis in the muscle implanted control and the pituitary and hypothalamic implant groups. In the pituitary and muscle implant group the circadian rhythm is of borderline significance with a P-value between 0.05 and 0.10. The timing (acrophase) and extent of change (amplitude) are similar in all three treatment groups. The average receptor content (MESOR) in the two pituitary-implanted groups, which in previous studies were shown to have an increased breast cancer incidence is about twice that of the control group. The reduction in the pituitary induced breast cancer rate by hypothalamic tissue addition to a cancer incidence between the animals with pituitary and muscle isograft and the mice carrying no pituitary at all has also been shown previously in this strain of mice and is not reflected in receptor content.  相似文献

Summary Parathyroid glands of winter frogs (Rana pipiens) were compared by light and electron microscopy with those of winter frogs homoimplanted with pituitary glands. Serum calcium levels of untreated and pituitary-implanted animals were compared also. Forty-eight hours after pituitary implantation, serum calcium is elevated from a mean winter value of 6.2 mg % to 9.3 mg % and, morphologically, the parathyroid gland appears to be stimulated with respect to secretory activity. Compared with parathyroids of untreated winter frogs, intercellular spaces are diminished after pituitary implantation and glandular parenchyma is composed of cells with closely apposed plasma membranes thrown into interdigitating folds. Dense core vesicles are present in the cytoplasm and, together with microtubules, are encountered near plasma membranes. Golgi lamellae contain electron dense material and exhibit budding of dense core vesicles. Neither myelinated multivesicular bodies, presumably cytolysosomes degrading unneeded parathormone and organelles, nor focal dilatations with myelination of Golgi lamellae are encountered in parathyroid cells of pituitary implanted frogs. Rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria do not undergo marked changes in distribution or abundance after pituitary implantation, indicating that the synthetic aspects of the secretory process are little altered in untreated and treated animals. It is suggested that in addition to Ca++ a pituitary factor is involved in the seasonal changes in amphibian parathyroid structure and function.The authors wishes to thank Mrs. Mary Lee, Mr. Johnny Sandifer and Mr. M. The specialized salt glands on the epidermis of halophytic plants secrete excess salts from tissues by a mechanism that is poorly understood. We examined the salt glands as putative salt and water bi‐regulatory units that can respond swiftly to altering environmental cues. The tropical mangrove tree species (Avicennia officinalis) is able to grow under fluctuating salinities (0.7–50.0 dS m?1) at intertidal zones, and its salt glands offer an excellent platform to investigate their dynamic responses under rapidly changing salinities. Utilizing a novel epidermal peel system, secretion profiles of hundreds of individual salt glands examined revealed that these glands could secrete when exposed to varying salinities. Notably, rhythmic fluctuations observed in secretion rates were reversibly inhibited by water channel (aquaporin) blocker, and two aquaporin genes (PIP and TIP) preferentially expressed in the salt gland cells were rapidly induced in response to increasing salt concentration. We propose that aquaporins are involved and contribute to the re‐absorption of water during salt removal in Avicennia officinalis salt glands. This constitutes an adaptive feature that contributes to salt balance of trees growing in saline environments where freshwater availability is limited.  相似文献

Females possess spermathecae and anterior ventral glands such as Necturus females. However, female P. anguinus possess new additional cloacal glands of unknown homology. Vacuolar-type proton ATPase (V-ATPase) is a multi-subunit enzyme that couples ATP hydrolysis to the translocation of protons across membranes. Mammalian cells express four isoforms of the a subunit of V-ATPase. Previously, we have shown that V-ATPase with the a3 isoform is highly expressed in pancreatic islets and is located in the membranes of insulin-containing granules in the β cells. The a3 isoform functions in the regulation of hormone secretion. In this study, we have examined the distribution of a subunit isoforms in endocrine tissues, including the adrenal, parathyroid, thyroid, and pituitary glands, with isoform-specific antibodies. We have found that the a3 isoform is strongly expressed in all these endocrine tissues. Our results suggest that functions of the a3 isoform are commonly involved in the process of exocytosis in regulated secretion. Increased activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis is part of the response to the stress of initial exposure to hypoxia, but there is evidence to suggest that it persists after homeostatic stability has been regained and acclimatization achieved. The adrenal glands of five lifelong residents of La Paz, Bolivia, who had lived at altitudes in the range 3600–3800 m, were significantly larger than those in age-matched controls from sea level (15.3g vs 10.4g;P<0.001) and appeared hyperplastic. The pituitary glands of the highlanders were not significantly different in size from those of the controls (0.67 g vs 0.51 g), but contained larger populations of corticotrophs expressed in terms of the total cell population of their anterior lobes (25.6% vs 19.4%;P<0.001). In conjunction with other studies of this endocrine axis in man and animals exposed to a hypoxic environment, these data suggest that greater amounts of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) are required to maintain normal adrenocortical function under such circumstances, probably as a result of hypoxic inhibition of adrenocortical sensitivity to stimulation. Physiological hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex may be common in people living at high altitude.  相似文献

Generation glands are holocrine epidermal glands occurring on the ventral aspect of the thigh of cordylid lizards. In most species these glands seemingly start to differentiate with the onset of sexual maturity, but macroscopic signs of generation gland activity were noted in neonates of the large-scaled girdled lizard, Cordylus macropholis. The glands of neonatal, subadult, and adult individuals were examined microscopically using standard histological techniques. The glands of the five neonatal specimens examined, including both males and females, all had the same basic structure and displayed two layers of mature glandular material. In subadult and adult specimens, the number of layers varied from seven to nine. The structure of the generation glands of C. macropholis is similar to that of the few other Cordylus species that have been described to date. They are of the protruding kind with multiple mature glandular generations. Juveniles of an additional 12 cordylid species have been examined for the presence of active generation glands. Active glands were found to be present in neonates of C. tasmani and C. tropidosternum, both of which are, like C. macropholis, terrestrial species. In C. cordylus and C. coeruleopunctatus, active generation glands are absent in neonates, but differentiate soon after birth. The Plumbaginaceae (non-core Caryophyllales) is a family well known for species adapted to a wide range of arid and saline habitats. Of its salt-tolerant species, at least 45 are in the genus Limonium; two in each of Aegialitis, Limoniastrum and Myriolimon, and one each in Psylliostachys, Armeria, Ceratostigma, Goniolimon and Plumbago. All the halophytic members of the family have salt glands and salt glands are also common in the closely related Tamaricaceae and Frankeniaceae. The halophytic species of the three families can secrete a range of ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, HCO3, SO42-) and other elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). Salt glands are, however, absent in salt-tolerant members of the sister family Polygonaceae. We describe the structure of the salt glands in the three families and consider whether glands might have arisen as a means to avoid the toxicity of Na+ and/or Cl or to regulate Ca2+ concentrations with the leaves. We conclude that the establishment of lineages with salt glands took place after the split between the Polygonaceae and its sister group the Plumbaginaceae.  相似文献

Salamanders in the family Plethodontidae exhibit a unique tail‐straddle walk during courtship that can include the use of sexually dimorphic mental and caudal courtship glands. This study presents novel histological and fine structure data on mental glands and caudal courtship glands in Plethodon mississippi, Desmognathus conanti and Eurycea quadridigitata using both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study represents the first use of scanning electron microscopy to observe these glands. Both mental and caudal courtship glands were observed to vary seasonally in gland diameter and histology according to the breeding season of each species. Morphological variation was observed across the three species studied in both clustering and relative size of the glands compared to neighbouring mucous and granular glands. Hypertrophied mental glands are larger than mucous or granular glands in all species, but relationships among caudal courtship glands and other skin glands vary among species. In E. quadridigitata, active caudal courtship glands are larger than mucous and granular glands, but in D. conanti, caudal courtship glands are similar in size to granular glands and larger than mucous glands. In P. mississippi, caudal courtship glands are scattered among significantly larger granular glands and are similar in size to mucous glands.  相似文献

Males of the two species of Mertensiella (M. caucasica and M. luschani) possess a tubercle projecting from the skin of the dorsal tail base, the single morphological character that defines the genus. The dorsal tail tubercle functions during courtship, and its role is similar in both species. The tubercle is inserted into the cloaca of the female during ventral amplexus, shortly before the male deposits a spermatophore. Histological examination, however, revealed that the dorsal tubercles differ structurally between the two species. In M. caucasica, the tubercle consists primarily of elongate mucous glands, with granular glands occurring only at the base. Both mucous and granular glands of the tubercle are larger than those in typical skin. Unlike typical skin, however, mucous glands are larger than granular glands. In M. luschani, mucous glands and granular glands occur throughout the tubercle, and the granular glands are larger than the mucous glands, although both types are larger than those in typical skin. Single comb White Leghorn cockerels received LH-RH in varying dosages at different time periods. The uptake of 32P by the testes was the end-point of the assay. Dosages as low as 0.06 μg were effective but at least 30 minutes were required for a significant response. Differences in32P uptakes were observed between 2-day and 8-day-old birds. The younger chicks had greater percentage increases over their controls than did the older chicks and the latter reached their peak response 40 minutes later. Assay of anterior pituitary glands demonstrated that 90 minutes after LH-RH treatment there was less gonadotropin present than in control glands but 150 minutes after injection anterior pituitary gland content was greater than that of the control glands.  相似文献

Adrenocortical cell transplantation is a powerful technique for the investigation of the regulation of adrenocortical structure and function. Some classical organ and tissue transplantation experiments suggest that the success of transplantation depends on the activity of the pituitary gland and other endocrine systems, and is therefore influenced by the host animals’ own adrenal glands. For this reason, our experiments have usually been performed on adrenalectomized animals. However, we show here that cell transplantation experiments, involving the introduction of bovine adrenocortical cells into scid mice, do produce transplant tissues in the presence of the host animals’ adrenal glands. However, the tissue that forms is small and its cells also smaller than usual. When the adrenals of such animals are removed in a second surgical procedure, the transplants show a rapid increase in steroidogenic function and a slower increase in size, over several weeks. We conclude that the initial process by which transplanted adrenocortical cells organize into a tissue structure is not affected by the presence of the host animals’ adrenal glands, but the growth of the transplants is limited until the adrenal glands are removed.  相似文献

The relationship between glandular trichomes and cannabinoid content in Cannabis sativa L. was investigated. Three strains of Cannabis, which are annuals, were selected for either a drug, a non-drug, or a fiber trait and then cloned to provide genetically uniform material for analyses over several years. The distribution of the number and type of glands was determined for several organs of different ages including the bract and its subtending monoleaflet leaf and the compound leaf on pistillate plants. Quantitation of glands on these structures was integrated with gas chromatographic analyses of organ cannabinoid profiles. A negative correlation was found between cannabinoid content and gland number for each of the three clones. Isolated heads of the capitate-stalked glands also were analyzed for cannabinoid content and found to vary in relation to clone and gland age. These studies indicate that cannabinoids may occur in plant cells other than glandular trichomes. The results of these studies emphasize the need for stringent sampling procedures in micromorphological studies on trichome distribution and analytical determinations of cannabinoid content in Cannabis.  相似文献

Growth hormone (GH) was purified from pituitary glands of tuna (Thunnus albacares). The yield of this hormone was 4mg/g wet tissue. The hormone had a molecular weight of 21,000 and an isoelectric point of 7.1. The partial amino acid sequence including N-terminal Gin, which was modified to pyroglutamate, was established by analyzing peptide fragments generated by chemical and enzymatic treatments. Intraperitoneal injection of tuna GH at doses of 0.1 and 1 μ body weight at 7 day intervals resulted in a significant increase in body weight and length of juvenile rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). The GH-treated fish had a 3-fold higher growth rate and a 1.6-fold higher food conversion efficiency than the control fish.  相似文献

The diversity of non-glandular and glandular hairs of Cannabis sativa L. (marihuana) are described by scanning electron microscopy. The non-glandular hairs are of two major types, as distinguished by size differences and locations, and all of them are highly silicified. The presence of silica as well as cystoliths of calcium carbonate help in the identification of marihuana even in its ash residues. X-ray microanalyses of Cannabis hairs are compared with those of Humulus lupulus and Lantana camera, whose hairs have been considered to resemble those of marihuana. Glandular hairs are found to be of two major categories. One group consists of glands whose heads are generally made up of eight cells and the other group whose heads are generally made up of two cells but never more than four cells. All glands of both categories are stalked. Some glands of the first category are massively stalked and these are restricted solely to anthers and bracts of staminate and pistillate plants. The massive stalk is considered to be made up of epidermal and hypodermal cells that have grown in response to some stimulation during anthesis. Fine details of the shoot system of Cannabis, such as cuticular ridges on epidermal cells, warty protuberances on non-glandular hairs, and surface views of glands in developing stages are also reported. Glandular hairs on the bracts of Humulus lupulus resemble those of Cannabis.  相似文献
