The new species Samariscus leopardus is described from one specimen caught at a depth of 159 m in the Indian Ocean, 11°22′ S, 61°42′ E. The species is easily distinguishable from the remaining species of the genus from a set of the following characteristics: the absence of a lateral line on both sides of the body, a short ventral fin, 42 vertebrae (9 trunk and 33 caudal), 5 rays of pectoral fin, and spotted coloration. Other morphological specific features, including topography of sensory canals of the head, are described.  相似文献

A new halophilic anaerobe was isolated from the hypersaline surface sediments of El-Djerid Chott, Tunisia. The isolate, designated as strain 6SANG, grew at NaCl concentrations ranging from 14 to 30%, with an optimum at 20–22%. Strain 6SANG was a non-spore-forming, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, appearing singly, in pairs, or occasionally as long chains (0.7–1 × 4–13 μm) and showed a Gram-negative-like cell wall pattern. It grew optimally at pH values between 7.2 and 7.4, but had a very broad pH range for growth (5.9–8.4). Optimum temperature for growth was 42°C (range 30–50°C). Strain 6SANG required yeast extract for growth on sugars. Glucose, sucrose, galactose, mannose, maltose, cellobiose, pyruvate, and starch were fermented. The end products from glucose fermentation were acetate, butyrate, lactate, H2, and CO2. The G + C ratio of the DNA was 34.3 mol%. Strain 6SANG exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 91–92% with members of the genus Halobacteroides, H. halobius being its closest phylogenetic relative. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, we propose that this bacterium be classified as a novel species of a novel genus, Halanaerobaculum tunisiense gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is 6SANGT (=DSM 19997T = JCM 15060T).  相似文献

Halophilic archaeal strains R26T and R22 were isolated from the brown alga Laminaria produced at Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. Cells from the two strains were pleomorphic rods and Gram negative, and colonies were red pigmented. Strains R26T and R22 were able to grow at 20–50°C (optimum 37°C) in 1.4–5.1 M NaCl (optimum 3.1–4.3 M) at pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum pH 8.0–8.5) and neither strain required Mg2+ for growth. Cells lyse in distilled water and the minimum NaCl concentration required to prevent cell lysis was 8% (w/v) for strain R26T and 12% (w/v) for strain R22. The major polar lipids of the two strains were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester and minor phosphatidylglycerol sulfate; glycolipids were not detected. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes and rpoB′ genes revealed that strains R26T and R22 formed a distinct clade with the closest relative, Natronoarchaeum mannanilyticum. The DNA G+C content of strains R26T and R22 was 65.8 and 66.4 mol%, respectively. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains R26T and R22 was 89%. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties suggest that the strains R26T and R22 represent a novel species in a new genus within the family Halobacteriaceae, for which the name Salinarchaeum laminariae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R26T (type strain R26T = CGMCC 1.10590T = JCM 17267T, reference strain R22 = CGMCC 1.10589).  相似文献

Four strains of Kappaphycus alvarezii were cultivated in the subtropical waters of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (27°29′19′′ S/48°32′28′′ W), from February 2009 to February 2010. Seaweeds were cultivated on floating raft near of mussel farms. Salinity ranged from 29 to 36 psu and temperature from 17.1 to 28.5°C. Higher growth rates (5.12–4.29% day−1) were measured in summer and autumn, showing a positive correlation between growth rate and water temperature. Lower growth rates (0.54–0.32% day−1) occurred in winter, resulted mainly by biomass loss. Significant differences were observed among the strains in spring and the brown tetrasporophytic strain was the only one which failed to recover, being excluded of the experiments. The effect of cultivation periods (36, 42, and 97 days) on carrageenan yield, gel strength, and viscosity were analyzed. Carrageenan yields were higher for plants kept 42 days in the sea (28%), against 25% for 36 and 97 days. There were no significant differences in carrageenan yield among the strains analyzed. Viscosity increased with the increase of cultivation period, while gel strength seemed to vary at random. Tetrasporangia and cystocarps were not observed, and lost fragments did not attach outside the raft. In general, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration decreased around the cultivation area as compared to the mussel farm. Results show that cultivation of K. alvarezii is technically feasible in subtropical waters and can be associated with local mussel farms, mitigating the eutrophication and, eventually, increasing the economic return of the farmers.  相似文献

A novel Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, obligately aerobic bacterium, strain YIM-C248T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from a salt-lake in the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai, north-west China. Cells were non-sporulating short rods, occurring singly or as doublets, motile with peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred with 1–15% (w/v) NaCl [optimum 2–4% (w/v) NaCl], at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and at 4–35°C (optimum 25–30°C). The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1 ω7c, C12:0 3-OH, cyclo C19:0 ω8c, C16:0 and C16:1. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-9 and the genomic DNA G + C content was 58.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YIM-C248T should be assigned to the genus Halomonas. The sequence similarities between the isolate and the type strains of members of the genus Halomonas were in the range of 92.5–97.5%. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization data, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic differences supported the view that strain YIM-C248T represents a new species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas sediminis sp. nov. is proposed, with YIM-C248T (=CCTCC AA 207031 = KCTC 22167) as the type strain. The GenBank/EMBL/DBBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain YIM-C248T is EU135707.  相似文献

Since 1985, China has established three breeding herds of Père David’s deer: the Beijing Père David’s Deer Park (39°07′N, 116°03′E), the Dafeng Père David’s Deer Nature Reserve (33°05′N, 120°49′E) and Shishou (Tianezhou) Père David’s Deer Nature Reserve (29°49′N, 112°33′E), through reintroductions of about 30–40 founders. Since establishment, all three populations have grown steadily. However, genetic backgrounds in those populations are still unknown. We studied the genetic diversity in Père David’s deer and genetic consequences of population relocations in China. We revealed that genetic diversity was extremely low in Père David’s deer populations in China. Only a single mtDNA D-loop haplotype was found in the deer, furthermore, only five polymorphic microsatellite loci were screened out from 84 pairs of species-transferred primers. Genetic makeup in the three Père David’s deer populations were significantly different (P < 0.01). H E and allelic richness in the Tianezhou population were the highest (0.54, 2.60, n = 31), Beijing population (0.52, 2.4, n = 125) showed the second highest measures, while the Dafeng population (0.46, 2.39, n = 39) measured lowest. Our results suggest that effective management of a species of low genetic diversity like the Père David’s deer should consider the genetic background of each founder to make sure genetic variations are preserved in both source population and relocated population. Now, the Tianezhou population is the most appropriate source population in China when establishing new Père David deer populations in the wild.

A pale yellow-colored, moderately halophilic, Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-sporulating, rod-shaped, motile, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 073008T, was isolated from a sea anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica) collected from Naozhou Island, Leizhou Bay, South China Sea. The organism was able to grow with 1–20% (w/v) total salts (optimum, 5–10%), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and 10–40°C (optimum, 25–30°C). The major cellular fatty acids were C16:0, C16:1 ω7c/iso-C15:0 2-OH and C18:1 ω7c. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified phospholipid. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8 and the genomic DNA G + C content was 47.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JSM 073008T should be assigned to the genus Alteromonas, being most closely related to Alteromonas hispanica F-32T (sequence similarity 96.9%), followed by Alteromonas genovensis LMG 24078T (96.6%) and Alteromonas litorea TF-22T (96.4%). The sequence similarities between the novel isolate and the type strains of other recognized Alteromonas species ranged from 95.9% (with Alteromonas stellipolaris ANT 69aT) to 94.5% (with Alteromonas simiduii BCRC 17572T). The combination of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data supported the view that strain JSM 073008T represents a new species of the genus Alteromonas, for which the name Alteromonas halophila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JSM 073008T (=CCTCC AA 207035T = KCTC 22164T). The authors Yi-Guang Chen and Huai-Dong Xiao have contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

Thermophiles and their viruses are extraordinarily important because of their roles in processes of evolution, biogeochemistry and ecology. Species of the genus Meiothermus share close relationship with genus Thermus, but no Meiothermus bacteriophage has been reported yet. In this work, a new thermophilic bacteriophage named MMP17 (Meiothermus Myoviridae phage 17) was isolated from a Meiothermus strain and was further characterized. MMP17 was a typical myovirus with an icosahedral head (42 nm in diameter) and a tail (120 nm in length and 17 nm in width). Its DNA was about 33.5–39.5 kb in size. MMP17 was very stable at 55–60°C and pH 6–7. According to the one-step growth curve, the latent period and the burst period were 60 and 30 min, respectively. An average of 15 phage particles was released from each infected cell. Four major bands were detected in purified virion preparation by SDS-PAGE. As MMP17 was a thermophilic bacteriophage with lower production temperature, its characterization and the relationship between MMP17 and Thermus bacteriophages deserved for further study.  相似文献

Argas neghmei Kohls & Hoogstraal is a Neotropical tick species parasite of poultry and man in the arid western of the southern cone of America in Argentina and Chile. Males, females and nymphs of an argasid were collected from 20 to 22 of June, 2007 in nests of Creamy-breasted Canastero, Asthenes dorbignyi (Reinchenbach) (Passeriformes: Furnariidae) at about 7 km S of La Poma (24°46′S, 66°12′W) and a male tick at 24°48′S, 66°10′W on Nov 27, 2008, Salta province, Argentina. Scanning electron microscope micrographies and sequences of 16S rDNA confirmed that the ticks found were A. neghmei. Development in breeding areas of A. dorbignyi is probably a source of infestation for animal premises and houses. However, the role of other unknown wild birds may also contribute to the invasion of A. neghmei in chicken houses or residences.  相似文献

A new species of parasitic nematode, Collarinema eutriglae n. sp. (Cystidicolidae), is described from the stomach of the marine scorpaeniform fish Eutrigla gurnardus (Linnaeus), the grey gurnard (Triglidae), collected in the North Sea in the vicinity of the Shetland Islands (61°12′N, 00°30′E) during March, 2011. The new species, studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy, is characterised mainly by the structure of the mouth (small pseudolabia with terminal projections, submedian labia and well-developed sublabia not exceeding the labia externally), very small simple deirids, the length of the spicules (405–423 and 117–135 μm) and non-filamented eggs. Collarinema Sey, 1970 is considered a valid genus and an amended diagnosis is provided. Ascarophis collaris Petter, 1970 is transferred to Collarinema as C. collaris (Petter, 1970) n. comb.  相似文献

The genus Phrixolepia Butler, 1877 is revised and its diagnosis is given. At present, the genus comprises 10 species, three of which are described as new (all the holotypes and paratypes are deposited in MWM): Ph. pudovkini Solovyev, sp. n., LT: “China, Shaanxi prov., Taibai Shan, Tsinling Mts., Houzhenzi, 33°53′ N; 107°49′ E, 1500 m,” genital slide 11389; Ph. sinyaevi Solovyev, sp. n., LT: “N. Vietnam, Cuc. Phuong, 60 km SW Hanoi, 20°15′ N; 105°20′ E, 400 m,” genital slide 11386; Ph. nigra Solovyev, sp. n., LT: “China, prov. Yunnan, Yunlong, Fengshuining Mts., 13 km N of Caojian, 2460 m,” genital slide 11391. All the species are very similar externally, except for differences in size, tints of the coloration, and the presence of a semi-ovoid bright apical spot in the fore wing. The features of the male genitalia are diagnostic. A key to the species is given. The phylogenetic relationships between the species are examined. The genus is closely related to Olona Snellen, 1900 and Phobetron Hübner, 1825, based on the characters of larval morphology. A similar larval morphology also found in the family Dalceridae could be a synapomorphy of the families Limacodidae and Dalceridae.  相似文献

The spiraling whitefly Aleurodicus dispersus (Russell) is an insect pest that causes substantial damage to ornamental plants, shade trees and food crops. It was first observed in Benin in 1993. Two host specific parasitoids, Encarsia dispersa and E. guadeloupae, fortuitously introduced with its host, were recovered in the second half of 1993 in Southern Benin. Survey results from 1993 to 1995 (already published) showed the decline in the population of A. dispersus due to the parasitoids, and the spread from Cotonou (6°10′N) in a northern directions of both parasitoids and their host. Results from similar field surveys from 1996 to 2003 document that the spiraling whitefly and both its parasitoids spread to Natitingou (10°20′N, 540 km) in 1995 and Bembereke (10°14′N) in 1996, whereby E. dispersa arrived within less than a year of its host and quickly became dominant in the two localities on the northern front. In subsequent years, the parasitoids established their geographical niches, with E. dispersa being more abundant (up to 89%) in the coastal south bellow latitude 7°30′N and E. guadeloupae (up to 84%) in the north between latitudes 7°30′ and 10°30′N. We conclude that the gradual replacement observed over ten years and over 500 km has to do with longitudinal shifts in the length and severity of the dry season and the higher susceptibility to these conditions by E. dispersa.  相似文献

Community structure and diversity patterns of pelagic copepods were investigated for the coastal areas and in the marine lakes of the Palau islands in the West Pacific. We conducted field surveys during 2004–2007 and collected zooplankton samples from eight coastal areas and 16 marine lakes. The marine lakes in the islands of Palau are limnologically classified into two types, meromictic and holomictic lakes. Species diversity indices (Margalef’s species richness d′, Shannon–Wiener index H′, and Simpson’s dominance) were measured at each sampling site. The copepod community structure was analyzed using multivariate analyses, hierarchical cluster analysis, and non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) from the PRIMER package. A total of 36 copepod taxa were identified to the genus or species level from Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, and Poecilostomatoida. Multivariate analysis based on the Bray–Curtis similarity index revealed that copepod assemblages could be classified into three different groups according to their habitat: (I) meromictic lakes, (II) holomictic lakes with an exceptionally shallow and flat basin (type A holomictic lakes), (III) holomictic lakes with a deep basin (type B holomictic lakes), and all coastal areas. The meromictic lakes were characterized by markedly decreased species diversity (d′ = 0.15, H′ = 0.41) in which only two brackish-water species, Bestiolina similis and Oithona dissimilis, were dominant. Type A holomictic lakes were characterized by relatively low levels of species diversity (d′ = 1.25, H′ = 1.35). In contrast, type B holomictic lakes were characterized by relatively high levels of species diversity, which was comparable to that of coastal areas. This result indicated that zooplankton assemblages in the type B holomictic lakes were closely related to a coastal community. The present study showed that the species diversity of pelagic copepods varies according to the level of isolation and the local environmental conditions for each marine lake.  相似文献

The effect of tripalmitin (TP) crystallization on the thermomechanical properties of organogels developed with candelilla wax (CW) was investigated using safflower oil high in triolein (HOSFO) as the liquid phase. Factorial combinations of CW (i.e., 0–3%) and TP (i.e., 0–1%) in the HOSFO were used to develop organogels at three different temperatures (T set). The onset of crystallization (T g) during the cooling stage (10 °C/min), the melting temperature (T M), and the corresponding heat of melting (ΔH M) of the organogels were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Results showed that, without CW, the crystallization of TP in the HOSFO at the concentrations and T set investigated (i.e., −10 °C to 25 °C) did not develop a three-dimensional network that provided significant viscoelasticity (i.e., solid-like behavior) to the HOSFO. The CW developed organogels in the HOSFO with T M’s that increased from ≈30.5 °C up to ≈42.5 °C as a function of CW concentration. In contrast, in the CW–1% TP system, the co-crystallization of TP and CW resulted in organogels with TM’s that varied just between 36 °C and 38 °C, independent of the CW concentration. Higher elastic modulus (G′) and yield stress (σ*) were obtained with 3% CW–1.0% TP organogels than with organogels developed just by CW, particularly at T set’s of −5 °C and 15 °C. This research showed that co-crystallization of TP and CW, occurring at different extent as a function of T set, resulted in organogels with thermomechanical properties different from the ones showed by CW organogels. The results showed that co-crystallization of triacylglycerides with CW might be a useful alternative to tailor particular physicochemical properties associated to a specific functionality (i.e., melting profile and texture). Organogelation of vegetable oil might be used to develop trans-free vegetable-oil-based spreads and coatings and also novel food products with new textural perceptions for the consumers.  相似文献

A survey for entomopathogenic fungi of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans was conducted in two provinces of Argentina from March–December 2003. Field-collected insects that died in the laboratory were individually maintained in moist chamber and incubated at 22 °C. Triatominae adults infected with the fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus were found at El Quebracho (27°34′S–64°31′W), Santiago del Estero province, Argentina, in December 2003. Paecilomyces lilacinus was cultured and isolated from infected insects in SDAY, PYG and MEA media. Pathogenicity tests were conducted and positive results were recorded. The median survival time (MST) of T. infestans exposed to a P. lilacinus conidial suspension was 12.8 days, and 100% mortality occurred at 30 days post-treatment. This is the first record of natural infection caused by P. lilacinus in T. infestans in the world.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, irradiance, and daylength on Sargassum horneri growth were examined at the germling and adult stages to discern their physiological differences. Temperature–irradiance (10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C × 20, 40, 80 μmol photons m−2s−1) and daylength (8, 12, 16, 24 h) experiments were carried out. The germlings and blades of S. horneri grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–25°C), irradiances (20–80 μmol photons m−2s−1), and daylengths (8–24 h). At the optimal growth conditions, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the germlings were 21% day−1 (25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 13% day−1 (8 h daylength). In contrast, the RGRs of the blade weights were 4% day−1 (15°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 5% day−1 (12 h daylength). Negative growth rates were found at 20 μmol photons m−2s−1 of 20°C and 25°C treatments after 12 days. This phenomenon coincides with the necrosis of S. horneri blades in field populations. In conclusion, we found physiological differences between S. horneri germlings and adults with respect to daylength and temperature optima. The growth of S. horneri germlings could be enhanced at 25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 8 h daylength for construction of Sargassum beds and restoration of barren areas.  相似文献

A novel Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-sporulating, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 078120T, was isolated from sea water collected from a tidal flat of Naozhou Island, South China Sea. Growth occurred with 1–15% (w/v) total salts (optimum, 2–4%), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and at 4–35°C (optimum, 25–30°C). The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1 ω9c, C16:0, C12:0 3-OH and C16:1 ω7c. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-9, and the genomic DNA G + C content was 60.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JSM 078120T should be assigned to the genus Marinobacter, being related most closely to the type strains of Marinobacter segnicrescens (sequence similarity 98.2%), Marinobacter bryozoorum (97.9%) and Marinobacter gudaonensis (97.6%). The sequence similarities between the novel isolate and the type strains of other recognized Marinobacter species ranged from 96.7 (with Marinobacter salsuginis) to 93.3% (with Marinobacter litoralis). The levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain JSM 078120T and the type strains of M. segnicrescens, M. bryozoorum and M. gudaonensis were 25.3, 20.6 and 18.8%, respectively. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data supported the view that strain JSM 078120T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacter, for which the name Marinobacter zhanjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JSM 078120T (= CCTCC AB 208029T = DSM 21077T = KCTC 22280T). The GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain JSM 078120T is FJ425903.  相似文献

A moderately halophilic, Gram-positive, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 071068T, was isolated from a sea anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica) collected from the Naozhou Island on the Leizhou Bay in the South China Sea. Cells were motile by means of peritrichous flagella and formed ellipsoidal endospores lying in subterminal swollen sporangia. Strain JSM 071068T was able to grow with 1–20% (w/v) total salts (optimum, 6–9%), at pH values of 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and a temperature range of 10–35°C (optimum, 25°C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and iso-C15:0. The genomic DNA G + C content was 42.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain JSM 071068T belonged to the genus Halobacillus. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain JSM 071068T and the type strains of the recognized Halobacillus species ranged from 97.9% (with Halobacillus alkaliphilus) to 95.3% (with Halobacillus kuroshimensis). The levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between the new isolate and the type strains of H. alkaliphilus, Halobacillus campisalis, Halobacillus halophilus and Halobacillus seohaensis were 25.6, 22.1, 10.8 and 13.2%, respectively. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data supported the view that strain JSM 071068T represents a new species of the genus Halobacillus, for which the name Halobacillus naozhouensis sp. nov. is proposed, with JSM 071068T (=DSM 21183T =KCTC 13234T) as the type strain. On the family Brassicaceae, the causal agent responsible for downy mildew disease was originally regarded as a single species, Peronospora parasitica (now under Hyaloperonospora), but it was recently reconsidered to consist of many distinct species. In this study, 11 specimens of Peronospora drabae and P. norvegica parasitic on the genus Draba were investigated morphologically and molecularly. Pronounced differences in conidial sizes (P. drabae: 14–20 × 12.5–15.5 μm; P. norvegica: 20–29 × 15.5–22 μm) and 7.8% sequence distance between their ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequences confirmed their status as distinct species. Based on ITS phylogeny and morphology (monopodially branching conidiophores, flexuous to sigmoid ultimate branchlets, hyaline conidia and lobate haustoria), the two species unequivocally belong to the genus Hyaloperonospora and not to Peronospora to which they were previously assigned. Therefore, two new combinations, Hyaloperonospora drabae and H. norvegica, are proposed. The two taxa are illustrated and compared using the type specimen for H. norvegica and authentic specimens for H. drabae, which is lectotypified.  相似文献

In Japan, zooxanthellate Palythoa tuberculosa Klunzinger and Palythoa mutuki Verrill (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Zoantharia) are found over a 1,000 + km latitudinal range, often in environments where most other zooxanthellate anthozoans are not found (i.e. tidal lagoon pools, around shallow water hydrothermal vents, subtropical rocky shorelines). Sequences of internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA (ITS-rDNA) of the symbiotic dinoflagellate genus Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae) Freudenthal (Order Suessiales) from P. tuberculosa and P. mutuki from several locations in Japan (34°11′N–24°16′N) were analysed. Unexpectedly, despite the ability of the genus Palythoa to be flexible in association with different Symbiodinium subclades, most (35 of 36) Palythoa investigated here specifically associate with subclade C1 and closely related types. Symbiodinium subclade C1 has been characterized as a “generalist” in terms of the ability to associate with a range of hosts, but present results suggest that subclade C1 may also be a “generalist” in terms of being able to live in a variety of environments over a latitudinal range.
