Titanium alloy is one of the best materials for biomedical applications due to its superior biocompatibility, outstanding corrosion resistance, and low elastic modulus. However, the friction and wear behaviors of titanium alloys were sensitive to the environment including lubrication. In order to clarify the wear mechanism of titanium alloy under different lubrications including deionized water, physiological saline and bovine serum, the friction and wear tests were performed between Ti6Al4V plates and Si3N4 ball on a universal multi-functional tester. The friction and the wear rate of titanium alloy were measured under dry friction and three different lubrication conditions. The worn surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that under the dry friction, the wear resistance of titanium alloy was the worst since the wear mechanism was mainly the combination of abrasive wear and oxidation wear. It was also found that Ti6Al4V alloy had low friction coefficient and wear rate under three lubrication conditions, and its wear mechanism was adhesive wear.  相似文献

UHMWPE composites reinforced with Bovine Bone Hydroxyapatite(BHA)in different contents were prepared by heatpressing formation method.A hip joint wear simulator was used to investigate the biotribological behavior of UHMWPE/BHAcomposite acetabular cups against CoCrMo alloy femoral heads in bovine synovia lubrication at 37±1 ℃.It was found that theaddition of BHA powder to UHMWPE can improve the hardness and creep modulus of UHMWPE/BHA composites, anddecrease their wear rates under bovine synovia lubrication. When the content of BHA filler particles was up to 30 wt%,UHMWPE/BHA composites demonstrated the well design performances of the surface and biotribological properties.Fatigue, ploughing and slight adhesive wear were the main wear mechanisms for UHMWPE and its composites. In addition, the sizes ofwear particles became larger with an increase in BHA powder addition. These results suggest that BHA filler is a desirablecomponent to increase the wear resistance of UHMWPE/BHA composites for biomedical applications.  相似文献

Prediction of lubricating film thickness in UHMWPE hip joint replacements   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
An elastohydrodynamic lubrication model developed for a ball-in-socket configuration in a previous studies by the present authors (Jalali-Vahid et al., Thinning films and tribological interfaces, 26th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology, 2000, pp. 329-339) was applied to analyse the lubrication problem of a typical artificial hip joint replacement, consisting of an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup against a metallic or ceramic femoral head. The cup was assumed to be stationary whilst the ball was assumed to rotate at a steady angular velocity and under a constant load. A wide range of main design parameters were considered. It has been found that the predicted lubricating film thickness increases with a decrease in the radial clearance, an increase in the femoral head radius, an increase in UHMWPE thickness and a decrease in UHMWPE modulus. However, the predicted lubricating film thicknesses are not found to be sufficiently large in relation to the surface roughness of the cup and head to indicate separation of the two articulating surfaces. It should also be noted that if the design features are unable to secure full fluid film lubrication, it may be preferable to select them for minimum wear rather than maximum film thickness. For example, an increase in head radius will enhance the film thickness, but it will also increase the sliding distance and hence wear in mixed or boundary lubrication conditions. Furthermore, it is pointed out that an increase in the predicted lubricant film thickness is usually associated with an increase in the contact area, and this may cause lubricant starvation and stress concentration at the edge of the cup, and adversely affect the tribological performance of the implant. The effect of running-in process on the lubrication in UHMWPE hip joint replacements is also discussed.  相似文献

Commercially pure (CP) titanium and Ti 6Al 4V alloy were sputtered onto polycarbonate plastic implants to analyse hard tissue reactions to the two metals. The implants were inserted in the tibial methaphyses of five rabbits. Three months later they were removed and processed for light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. At the LM level, disordered woven bone was seen in the interface zone of Ti 6Al 4V, whereas organized bone was observed in direct contact with the CP titanium implants. TEM examination of Ti 6Al 4V sections revealed a 500–1000 Å thick collagen-free proeoglycan layer compared to 200–400 Å for CP titanium. A surface analysis test was performed to compare the magnetron sputtered film with bulk Ti 6Al 4V alloy. This test revealed no major differences between the experimental implant and the bulk alloy. More natural-like tissue reactions were observed to CP titanium than to Ti 6Al 4V alloy.  相似文献

Aseptic loosening from polyethylene wear debris is the leading cause of failure for metal-on-polyethylene total hip implants. Third-body debris ingress to the bearing space results in femoral head roughening and acceleration of polyethylene wear. How third-body particles manage to enter the bearing space between the closely conforming articulating surfaces of the joint is not well understood. We hypothesize that one such mechanism is from convective fluid transport during subluxation of the total hip joint. To test this hypothesis, a three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed and validated, to quantify fluid ingress into the bearing space during a leg-cross subluxation event. The results indicated that extra-articular joint fluid could be drawn nearly to the pole of the cup with even very small separations of the femoral head (<0.60mm). Debris suspended near the equator of the cup at the site of maximum fluid velocity just before the subluxation began could be transported to within 11 degrees from the cup pole. Larger head diameters resulted in increased fluid velocity at all sites around the entrance to the gap compared to smaller head sizes, with fluid velocity being greatest along the anterosuperolateral cup edge, for all head sizes. Fluid pathlines indicated that suspended debris would reach similar angular positions in the bearing space regardless of head size. Increased inset of the femoral head into the acetabular cup resulted both in higher fluid velocity and in transport of third-body debris further into the bearing space.  相似文献

A new bio-tribological simulator system was designed and built for basic wear tests on artificial hip joint materials and for common tribological studies applications. The module of hip joint simulator is consisted of Flexion and Extension (FE), Abduction and Adduction (AA) and Internal and External Rotation (IER). Preliminary tests were done with a 28 mm CoCrMo femoral head and a Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) cup. Results showed that the wear rate was close to the clinical one. A frequency control system and a heating system were developed to offer a wide range of rotation frequency and temperature so as to provide proper experiments. In the Pin-on-Disk (POD) part, eight precision-made pins were generated and an advanced computer system was built up to measure the friction coefficient of the tests samples.  相似文献

Four different structural models of artificial joints were developed and the finite element method (FEM) was employed to investigate their mechanical characteristics under static and dynamic conditions. The materials used in the FEM calculation were ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), 316L stainless steel, CoCrMo alloy and Ti6A14V alloy. The stress distribution, strain, and elastic deformation under static and dynamic conditions were obtained. Analysis and comparison of the ~alculation results of different models were conducted. It is shown that with the same parameters the model of a metallic femur head covered with an artificial cartilage layer is more similar to the structure of the natural human joint and its mechanical characteristics are the best of the four models.  相似文献

Infections are a devastating complication of titanium alloy orthopedic implants. Current therapy includes antibiotic-impregnated bone cement and antibiotic-containing coatings. We hypothesized that daptomycin, a Gram-positive peptide antibiotic, could prevent bacterial colonization on titanium alloy surfaces if covalently bonded via a flexible, hydrophilic spacer. We designed and synthesized a series of daptomycin conjugates for bonding to the surface of 1.0 cm2 Ti6Al4V foils through bisphosphonate groups, reaching a maximum yield of 180 pmol/cm2. Daptomycin-bonded foils killed 53 ± 5% of a high challenge dose of 3 × 10? cfu Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213.  相似文献

The generation of particulate debris at the taper junction of total hip replacements (THRs), can cause failure of the artificial hip. The taper surfaces of femoral heads and trunnions of femoral stems are generally machined to a certain roughness to enhance fixation. However, the effect of the surface roughness of these surfaces on the fixation, wear and consequently clinical outcomes of the design is largely unknown. In this study, we asked whether a micro-grooved trunnion surface finish (1) improves the fixation and (2) reduces the wear rate at the taper junction of THRs. We used 3D finite element (FE) models of THRs to, firstly, investigate the effect of initial fixation of a Cobalt-Chromium femoral head with a smooth taper surface mated with a Titanium (1) micro-grooved and (2) smooth, trunnion surface finishes. Secondly, we used a computational FE wear model to compare the wear evolution between the models, which was then validated against wear measurements of the taper surface of explanted femoral heads. The fixation at the taper junction was found to be better for the smooth couplings. Over a 7 million load cycle analysis in-silico, the linear wear depth and the total material loss was around 3.2 and 1.4 times higher for the femoral heads mated with micro-grooved trunnions. It was therefore concluded that smooth taper and trunnion surfaces will provide better fixation at the taper junction and reduce the volumetric wear rates.  相似文献

Mechanical surface treatments have a long history in traditional engineering disciplines, such as the automotive or aerospace industries. Today, they are widely applied to metal components to increase the mechanical performance of these. However, their application in the medical field is rather rare. The present study aims to compare the potential of relevant mechanical surface treatments on the high cycle fatigue (R = 0.1 for a maximum of 10 million cycles) performance of a Ti6Al4V standard alloy for orthopedic, spinal, dental and trauma surgical implants: shot peening, deep rolling, ultrasonic shot peening and laser shock peening. Hour-glass shaped Ti6Al4V specimens were treated and analyzed with regard to the material’s microstructure, microhardness, residual stress depth profiles and the mechanical behavior during fatigue testing. All treatments introduced substantial compressive residual stresses and exhibited considerable potential for increasing fatigue performance from 10% to 17.2% after laser shock peening compared to non-treated samples. It is assumed that final mechanical surface treatments may also increase fretting wear resistance in the modular connection of total hip and knee replacements.  相似文献

The reason for the extended use of titanium and its alloys as implant biomaterials stems from their lower elastic modulus, their superior biocompatibility and improved corrosion resistance compared to the more conventional stainless steel and cobalt-based alloys [Niinomi, M., Hattori, T., Niwa, S., 2004. Material characteristics and biocompatibility of low rigidity titanium alloys for biomedical applications. In: Jaszemski, M.J., Trantolo, D.J., Lewandrowski, K.U., Hasirci, V., Altobelli, D.E., Wise, D.L. (Eds.), Biomaterials in Orthopedics. Marcel Dekker Inc., New York, pp. 41-62]. Nanostructured titanium-based biomaterials with tailored porosity are important for cell-adhesion, viability, differentiation and growth. Newer technologies like foaming or low-density core processing were recently used for the surface modification of titanium alloy implant bodies to stimulate bone in-growth and improve osseointegration and cell-adhesion, which in turn play a key role in the acceptance of the implants. We here report preliminary results concerning the synthesis of mesoporous titanium alloy bodies by spark plasma sintering. Nanocrystalline cp Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-Al-V-Cr and Ti-Mn-V-Cr-Al alloy powders were prepared by high-energy wet-milling and sintered to either full-density (cp Ti, Ti-Al-V) or uniform porous (Ti-Al-V-Cr, Ti-Mn-V-Cr-Al) bulk specimens by field-assisted spark plasma sintering (FAST/SPS). Cellular interactions with the porous titanium alloy surfaces were tested with osteoblast-like human MG-63 cells. Cell morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM analysis results were correlated with the alloy chemistry and the topographic features of the surface, namely porosity and roughness.  相似文献

The chemical composition of biomaterials can drive their biological responses; therefore, this in vitro study aimed to evaluate the proteomic profile of the salivary pellicle formed on titanium (Ti) alloys containing niobium (Nb) and zirconium (Zr). The experimental groups consisted of Ti35NbxZr (x?=?5 and 10?wt%) alloys, and commercially pure titanium (cpTi); titanium aluminium vanadium (Ti6Al4V) alloys were used as controls. The physical and chemical characteristics of the Ti materials were analysed. The proteomic profile was evaluated by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Bacterial adhesion (2?h) of mixed species (Streptococcus sanguinis and Actinomyces naeslundii) was investigated as colony-forming units (n?=?6). This paper reports the finding that salivary pellicle composition can be modulated by the composition of the Ti material. The Ti35NbxZr group showed a significant ability to adsorb proteins from saliva, which can favour interactions with cells and compatibility with the body.  相似文献

Self-protecting Ti6Al4V alloy pins were prepared by covalent bonding of bis(ethylene glycol) linkers, then vancomycin to the oxidized, aminopropylated Ti6Al4V alloy surface. Fluorescence modification-enabled estimation of yields of free amines on the metallic surface monolayer at each reaction step. The vancomycin-protected Ti6Al4V pins were not colonized by Staphylococcus aureus, even after 44days storage in physiological buffer. These results provide a basis for testing self-protection against S. aureus colonization in animal models.  相似文献

This study was aimed at comparing the oxidative degradation of commercial acetabular cups made of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and conventional ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). After testing against deliberately scratched CoCrMo femoral heads in a hip joint simulator, the cups, microtomed parallel to the articulating surface, were analyzed by IR spectroscopy. Due to the potential for artifacts caused by absorbed contaminants, the IR spectra were compared only after hexane extraction; actually, XLPE was found to absorb more serum than UHMWPE. The two sets of unworn acetabular cups showed different oxidation patterns with consequently different distributions of carbonyl species; unworn XLPE was characterized by lower contents of carbonyl species and hydrogen-bonded alcohols and higher contents of trans-vinylene species than unworn UHMWPE. Upon simulator testing, UHMWPE showed more significant changes in oxidation indexes and distribution of carbonyl compounds than XLPE, confirming a better wear behavior for XLPE under the adopted testing conditions.  相似文献

Objective

This research was designed to investigate the effects of low pressure radio-frequency (RF) oxygen plasma treatment (OPT) on the surface of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti6Al4V. Surface topography, elemental composition, water contact angle, cell viability, and cell morphology were surveyed to evaluate the biocompatibility of titanium samples with different lengths of OP treating time.

Materials and Methods

CP-Ti and Ti6Al4V discs were both classified into 4 groups: untreated, treated with OP generated by using oxygen (99.98%) for 5, 10, and 30 min, respectively. After OPT on CP-Ti and Ti6Al4V samples, scanning probe microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), and contact angle tests were conducted to determine the surface topography, elemental composition and hydrophilicity, respectively. The change of surface morphology was further studied using sputtered titanium on silicon wafers. 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and F-actin immunofluorescence stain were performed to investigate the viability and spreading behavior of cultivated MG-63 cells on the samples.

Results

The surface roughness was most prominent after 5 min OPT in both CP-Ti and Ti6Al4V, and the surface morphology of sputtered Ti sharpened after the 5 min treatment. From the XPS results, the intensity of Ti°, Ti2+, and Ti3+ of the samples’ surface decreased indicating the oxidation of titanium after OPT. The water contact angles of both CP-Ti and Ti6Al4V were increased after 5 min OPT. The results of MTT assay demonstrated MG-63 cells proliferated best on the 5 min OP treated titanium sample. The F-actin immunofluorescence stain revealed the cultivated cell number of 5 min treated CP-Ti/Ti6Al4V was greater than other groups and most of the cultivated cells were spindle-shaped.

Conclusions

Low pressure RF oxygen plasma modified both the composition and the morphology of titanium samples’ surface. The CP-Ti/Ti6Al4V treated with 5 min OPT displayed the roughest surface, sharpest surface profile and best biocompatibility.  相似文献

Retrieval studies have shown that the interface between the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene insert and metal tibial tray of fixed-bearing total knee replacement components can be a source of substantial amounts of wear debris due to fretting micromotion. We assessed fretting wear of polyethylene against metal as a function of metal surface finish, alloy, and micromotion amplitude, using a three-station pin-on-disc fretting wear simulator. Overall, the greatest reduction in polyethylene wear was achieved by highly polishing the metal surface. For example, highly polished titanium alloy surfaces produced nearly 20 times less polyethylene wear compared with blasted titanium alloy, whereas, decreasing the micromotion amplitude from 200 to 50 μm produced approximately four times less polyethylene wear for the same blasted titanium alloy surface. Although the effect of the metal alloy was much smaller than the effect of metal surface roughness or the micromotion amplitude, CoCr discs produced slightly greater polyethylene fretting wear than titanium alloy discs under each condition. The results are essential in design and manufacturing decisions related to fixed-bearing total knee replacements.  相似文献

Today, only hard/soft cup and femoral head combinations are employed for hip joint prostheses. Highly polished ceramic is a material with very good tribological properties for femoral heads, being highly resistant to mechanical wear and tear, and highly resistant to chemical reactions in the biological environment. The advantage of metal heads, in contrast, undoubtedly lies in their resistance to breakage and the ease with which their geometry can be modified with respect, for example, to antirotation angle and neck length. The ideal material for femoral heads is a combination of the two materials. The new multi-layer combination of titanium-niobium oxide/nitride ceramic coating applied to a prehardened titanium head combines the positive material properties in an ideal manner. Femoral heads made of CoCrMo, oxide-hardened titanium, aluminium oxide or multilayer titanium-niobium ceramic were compared by means of friction an wear and tear tests. The TiNb-ceramic-metal heads showed similar abrasion at the surface as the ceramic heads. At the high loads of more than 400 kp, which may also be reached under physiological conditions, the specially coated titanium-ceramic heads proved to be superior in terms of resistance to fracture and tribological properties.  相似文献

Large inter-patient variability in wear rate and wear direction have been a ubiquitous attribute of total hip arthroplasty (THA) cohorts. Since patients at the high end of the wear spectrum are of particular concern for osteolysis and loosening, it is important to understand why some individuals experience wear at a rate far in excess of their cohort average. An established computational model of polyethylene wear was used to test the hypothesis that, other factors being equal, clinically typical variability in regions of localized femoral head roughening could account for much of the variability observed clinically in both wear magnitude and wear direction. The model implemented the Archard abrasive/adhesive wear relationship, which incorporates contact stress, sliding distance, and (implicitly) bearing surface tribology. Systematic trials were conducted to explore the influences of head roughening severity, roughened area size, and roughened area location. The results showed that, given the postulated wear factor elevations, head roughening variability (conservatively) typical of retrieval specimens led to approximately a 30 degrees variation in wear direction, and approximately a 7-fold variation in volumetric wear rate. Since these data show that randomness in head scratching can account for otherwise-difficult-to-explain variations in wear direction and wear rate, third-body debris may be a key factor causing excessive wear in the most problematic subset of the THA population.  相似文献

BackgroundThe knowledge of the electrochemical property (corrosion resistance) of beta titanium alloys compared to Ti-6Al-4 V for implants is relevant because of the potential cytotoxic effects that the released ions could cause to long-term health.ObjectivesThe objective of this systematic review was to seek information on the electrochemical properties (corrosion resistance) of beta titanium alloys compared to Ti-6Al-4 V since the awareness of the electrochemical behavior of the implant surface in the medium is essential for the best indication of the alloys or compositional changes, which may promote benefits to bone-implant interaction in all areas that this procedure is required.MethodsThe PubMed, LILACS, COCHRANE Library, and Science Direct databases were electronically searched for the terms: dental implants AND beta-titanium AND Ti-6Al-4 V AND electrochemical technics. The inclusion criteria were research articles that studied beta-titanium compared to Ti-6Al-4 V using electrochemical techniques in electrolytes of chemical composition similar to body fluid, published in English, between 2000 and 2020. Articles that did not compare the corrosion resistance of these alloys in electrolytes similar to body fluids were excluded.ResultsA total of 189 articles were restored and selected by title and/or abstract according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which resulted in 15 articles that were reduced to 8 after read in full. The studies in vitro evaluated the corrosion resistance in electrolytes Hank, Ringer, SBF, and 0.9 % NaCl, between beta titanium alloys, obtained by arc fusion or bars stock, and Ti-6Al-4 V, for dental or biomedical implants submitted to surface treatments by heat treatment, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), alkaline treatment, and thermomechanical.ConclusionThe evaluated literature allowed to determine that 1) The oxides Nb2O 5, Ta2O 5, and ZrO2 have higher stability and protection quality than that of TiO2 modified by the oxides of Al and V; 2) A higher modulus of elasticity of the Ti-6Al-4 V alloy favors protection against corrosion by maintaining a thicker and more firmly adhered oxide layer; 3) The increase in the thickness of the Ti alloys superficial layer contributes to the improvement of the corrosion resistance.  相似文献

A computational model was developed to identify the sites of third body particle embedment in a total hip acetabular component surface that are most problematic in terms of roughening the overpassing regions of the femoral head counterface, leading in turn to most severely accelerated polyethylene wear. The analytical approach used was to calculate loci of acetabular sites that, during the gait cycle, overpass previously documented regions of kinetically most critical femoral head roughening. Instantaneous local contact stress and sliding distance were postulated as factors contributing to the severity of the femoral head scratching/roughening which would be expected, due to otherwise-similar particles embedded along each such acetabular overpass locus. The computational results showed that the location of debris embedment was a potent determinant of the amount of polyethylene wear acceleration expected. The data also showed that the supero-lateral aspect of the acetabular cup is consistently and by far the most problematic area for third body particle embedment.  相似文献
