The crustaceans and rotifers of 17 samples from the plankton and 3 from the littoral from lakes of the lower Rio Nhamundá, an affluent of the Amazon were studied.

145 taxa of rotifers and 46 of crustaceans were found; two rotifers and three crustaceans are new to science: Keratella americana nhamundaiensis, Euchlanis triquetra var. nhamudaiensis, Echinisca superaculeata, E. sioli, and E. mira. In the taxonomical part 24 rotiferan and 22 crustacean taxa are described in more detail, drawings of them given, and partly remarks made about the geographical distribution.

In the biocenotical part the conditions of dominances were studied: Brachionus zahniseri and Keratella americana within the rotifers and Bosminopsis deitersi and Oithona amazonica within the crustaceans are the dominant species in the pelagial. In the littorial Synchaeta stylata and Stre‐blocerus pygmaeus were found to be dominant.

The species diversity and also the evenness is higher within the rotifers than in the crustaceans. By means of an index of similarity dendrograms were drawn where groups of lakes can be differentiated by using the similarity between the crustaceans. The proportion of neotropical species in relation to pantropical and cosmopolitical species is lowest in the rotifers, higher in the cladocerans and highest in the copepods at 100%.  相似文献

The population dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a fertilized enclosure were studied from April 1977 to June 1978. During the first spring period, the rotifers Keratella cochlearis, Kellicottia longispina, and Polyarthra vulgaris were scarce. During the following spring, all three species were abundant. An attempt is made to explain these differences. Food resource competition from cladocerans, and the low food quality and possible inhibitory effects of Coccomyxa sp. were found to be the most likely factors limiting the growth of these rotifers during the first spring period.  相似文献

We evaluate the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the community structure of rotifers across a regional hydrological cycle in lotic and lentic environments of the upper River Paraná. Depth, transparency, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a and densities of rotifers were measured at two stations in Lake Guaraná (littoral and open water regions) and at one station in the River Baía (open water region). Highest densities of rotifers were found at the lake littoral. Canonical correlation analysis related environmental variables with the densities of the most abundant rotifers. The strongest relationship was with chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, hydrological level and water temperature. Diversity of rotifers at each station was mainly explained by fluctuations in hydrological level. Results of grouping analysis suggested the formation of groups according to phases of the hydrological cycle.  相似文献

The longitudinal distribution and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton were examined along a 200-km section of the middle to lower Nakdong River, Korea. Zooplankton was sampled twice a month from January 1995 to December 1997 at five sites in the main river channel. There was considerable longitudinal variation in total zooplankton abundance (ANOVA, p < 0.001). All major zooplankton groups (rotifers, cladocerans, copepodids and nauplii) increased significantly with distance downstream along the river. There also were statistically significant seasonal differences in zooplankton abundance at the sampling sites (ANOVA, p < 0.01). Zooplankton abundance was high in spring and fall and low in summer and winter. The seasonal pattern of rotifers was similar to that of total zooplankton. This reflected the fact that rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. rubens, Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra spp.) strongly dominated the zooplankton community at all locations. Among the macrozooplankton, small-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Bosmina spp.) dominated; the abundance of large-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Daphnia) was negligible (0–5 ind. l–1). Among the environmental variables considered, partial residence time seemed to play the most important role in determining characteristics of the river zooplankton community.  相似文献

A mesocosm experiment was conducted “in situ” in a Chara dominated shallow lake near Valencia (Spain) to study top–down and bottom–up effects on rotifers by means of nutrient and fish additions. Both processes were important in determining rotifer abundance, biomass and diversity. A total of 36 mesocoms were established with triplicate treatment combinations of three fish levels (from no fish to 45 individuals of Gambusia holbrooki males) and four nutrient enrichment levels (from no additions to 10 mg l−1 nitrate-N and 1 mg l−1 phosphate-P). The main effect was a notable increase of planktonic and plant associated rotifers densities with fish. Rotifers benefited from mosquitofish predation on microcrustaceans and chironomids. The results showed a marked negative relationship between rotifer and cyclopoid abundances, indicating the importance of the predatory pressure of cyclopoids on rotifers. Effects on rotifer diversity were also evident, in general rotifer diversity decreased with nutrients and increased with fish. The effects of nutrients analysed at species level showed two contrasting density responses: an increase or a decrease with nutrients, which levelled off at high nutrient concentrations. High-level nutrient additions (from 5 mg l−1 nitrate-N and 0.5 mg l−1 phosphate-P) induced a switch to a turbid state with macrophyte disappearance. Most planktonic rotifer species, as well as plant associated ones, diminished when the turbid state was well established, especially in the mesocosms without fish. In the turbid mesocosms, relative abundance of plant-associated rotifers (as a whole) was higher than that of planktonic rotifers. The changes in rotifer species composition after the switch from a clear to a turbid water state are also described. Species of the genus Anuraeopsis, Trichocerca and Hexarthra, dominant in the clear water state, practically disappeared in the turbid water state, in which Proalides tentaculatus and Lecane nana were the main species. The diel vertical migration of planktonic rotifers in a small, hypereutrophic tarn was investigated on four occasions in 1983. When the tarn was isothermal the rotifers were distributed throughout the water column. After stratification, the rotifers were confined to the top 1–2 m of oxygenated water. On all four dates the rotifers were aggregated at specific depths in the water column. On some occasions, the pattern of aggregation changed as the animals performed distinct diurnal migrations. Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata and Polyarthra vulgaris usually followed the reverse migrations of the phytoplankton. In contrast, the movements of Anuraeopsis fissa were less pronounced and were associated with variations in the depth of the oxycline.  相似文献

Intensity of the abrasive effect of wind-borne sand – sandblasting – in addition to other environmental factors was measured at two vegetation zones on a sandy beach and one site at an inland area. One zone on the beach included foredunes sparsely vegetated by dune species such as Carex kobomugi and Calystegia soldanella. The other zone which was located ∼50 m inland from the first zone was flat grassland dominated by inland species such as Miscanthus sinensis and Imperata cylindrica var. Koenigii. The inland site consisted of short grassland located 3 km inland from the beach. Intensity of sandblasting was estimated by the whiteness of a transparent plastic sheet exposed to the air for 2 weeks. This sheet turned whitely opaque when it was abraded by wind-borne sand. The other environmental factors measured at the beach were intensity of salt spray, soil water content, soil salinity, and sand accumulation, while intensity of salt spray was the only additional factor measured at the inland site. Intensity of sandblasting was considerably higher at the foredune zone, while that at the grassland zone was as low as that at the inland site. Considerable salt spray was detected at the foredune and grassland zones. Differences in other environmental factors were small between the two zones on the beach. In order to compare the difference in tolerance to sandblasting, a jet of sand was applied to one ordinary species, C. kobomugi, from the foredune and two species, M. sinensis and I. cylindrica, from the grassland zone. The difference in tolerance was determined by the decrease in the area of green leaf after applying sandblasting with commercial sandblaster and/or spraying with sea water. M. sinensis and I. cylindrica lost much of the leaf area after sandblasting and salt spraying, while C. kobomugi lost little. These results indicated that one of the characteristic environmental factors of a foredune is the high intensity of sandblasting accompanied by salt spray, and that species found in the foredune are more tolerant to sandblasting than species distributing in more inland areas.  相似文献

The zooplankton community of a flooded opencast sulphur mine was investigated during two years. The complicated physical and chemical relationships in this water-filled pit caused an atypical plankton assemblage. At the time of the investigation 20 species of rotifers, 6 of Cladocera, and 8 species of Copepoda were found. A single Ostracod and Chaoborus flavicans were also noted in the samples. Usually the epilimnion was monopolised by rotifers whereas the hypolimnion had a more diversified assemblage of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods. The result of clustering analysis indicated that each predator was associated with its own group of prey. Discrimination analyses showed weak seasonal differences in the zooplankton and three zones in the vertical profile – epilimnetic, upper hypolimnetic and anaerobic. Principal component analysis reduced the chemical parameters to the main contributors of conductivity (the main anions and cations) plus toxic sulphide and hydrogen sulphide. The animals were classified by the first two components into two groups: cold stenotherms and medium-sized filtrators, such as Bosmina longirostris. A specific analysis of vertical profiles generated five variants of diel vertical migrations. When time–space distributions of the plankters were analysed the highest numbers of different species were usually in different times and depths. The epilimnion was inhabited by small fishes and was dominated by rotifers but was free from C. flavicans which inhabited the cold hypolimnion, together with the remaining invertebrate predators (copepods and Asplanchna).Chaoborus and the other invertebrate predators participated more evenly in the contributions of species to the total density. In the presence of invertebrate predators the structure of the rotifer population shifted from soft-bodied species to spined or fast-moving species. When the predation pressure was too strong, as in the hypolimnion, the soft-bodied species were, in practice, absent. When the pit was in an oligotrophic state the hypolimnion population was composed of up to 60–90% rotifers. When the trophic state shifted to mesotrophy, the proportion of cladocerans increased.  相似文献

Freshwater cladocerans and rotifers were used as prey to study functional response and prey selection by adult females of Chirocephalus diaphanus under laboratory conditions. For functional response studies, we offered three rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus and Euchlanis dilatata) and three cladoceran species (Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Moina macrocopa) at various densities ranging from 0.5 to 16 ind. ml–1. We found increased zooplankton consumption with increasing prey density but beyond 4 ind ml–1 cladocerans and 8 ind. ml–1 rotifers, the number of animals eaten plateaued. In general, C. diaphanus consumed fewer large prey (cladocerans) and many more smaller zooplankton (rotifers). For prey selection experiments, we used B. calyciflrous, B. patulus, C. dubia and M. macrocopa, offered at the ratio of two rotifers: one cladoceran and at three prey densities (total zooplankton numbers: 3, 6 and 12 ind. ml–1). Prey selectivity patterns followed the functional response trends. In general, regardless of prey types, with an increase in the available zooplankton, there was an increase in the number of prey consumed. At any given prey density, C. diaphanus consumed higher numbers of rotifers than cladocerans. Among the prey offered, B. patulus and M. macrocopa were positively selected. Results are discussed in light of possible control of zooplankton by anostracans in temporary ponds.  相似文献

Soil rotifers of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area (Central and Northern Bohemia, Czech Republic) were investigated in August, 2004. This is the first investigation of the soil rotifers in the area. Altogether 25 rotifer taxa were found at five sites. Mniobia symbiotica, M. variabilis, Macrotrachela habita, M. oblita, Habrotrocha flaviformis, H. bidens and Ceratotrocha cornigera were the most abundant species. These are the first findings of Mniobia variabilis and Macrotrachela oblita in the Czech Republic. Total rotifer abundances varied from 67 to 647 × 103 ind. m−2.  相似文献

The composition of the zooplankton of the Billings Reservoir and its variation in an eutrophic environment, subject to frequent blooms of algae (chiefly Cyanophyceae) was studied during one year (from October, 1977 to September, 1978) in two stations in the littoral and in the limnetic zone.The zooplankton community in the limnetic zone was dominated by cyclopoid copepods (Thermocyclops crassus and Metacyclops mendocinus) and by rotifers (Brachionus, Polyarthra and others) which represented, respectively 38.5 and 35.5% of the total zooplankton. At the littoral zone, cyclopoids were the most abundant (42.3%).The cladocerans were the least significant group at both stations, and calanoid copepods were found only at the littoral zone.A higher production of small filtrators, such as rotifers, cyclopoid nauplii and Bosmina sp was observed.  相似文献

Publications in Russian on the influence of epibiontic rotifers on cladocerans as well as on predator-prey interrelations between cladocerans and rotifers are reviewed. Proales daphnicola and Brachionus rubens are common epibionts of Cladocera. The biology of these species is described including the choice of host, feeding, reproduction and impact on the host. Representatives of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae are most readily colonized. At high densities of epibiontic rotifers, a high percentage of young Cladocera die. Predators consuming cladocerans (mainly Bosminidae) belong to the family Asplanchnidae. Rotifers are consumed by the predatory cladocerans Leptodora and Polyphemus. The results of functional response experiments by the author with P. pediculus feeding on Synchaeta pectinata, Asplanchna priodonta, colonial and solitary Conochilus unicornis, and Platyias patulus are given. In the range of prey densities of 100–1600 1–1 a functional response was found in all the rotifers except P. patulus. Colonies of C. unicornis were not consumed. The highest level of feeding rate saturation was observed in Synchaeta pectinata. Various adaptations in prey morphology prevented effective predation: coloniality, large size of the prey and hard lorica with spines.  相似文献

In Crawford Lake, a small meromictic water body in southern Ontario, Canada, the life cycles of planktonic Chaoborus flavicans and C. punctipennis were out of phase by about two months, the former pupating from mid May through mid June and the latter from July through September. C. flavicans possibly produced a second annual generation. Fourth instars of both species were strong diel migrators and occupied similar strata at most times. C. punctipennis fourth instar diet consisted almost entirely of rotifers. C. flavicans ate rotifers but fed heavily also on daphnids in May and August. C. punctipennis fourth instars showed little growth until early spring, possibly owing to a sparseness of rotifers, then grew rapidly until pupation. C. flavicans had a slow, but relatively constant growth rate at all times during the open water season, presumably because its greater mouth gape allowed it a wider range of food items.  相似文献

A soil sample out of a dried rockpool (lithotelma) on a dolomit hill in the Etosha National Park, Namibia, was investigated for possible occurence of rotifers. Besides a numerous and rich microfaunae, e.g. Zooflagellata, Rhizopoda. Acari, Nematoda, Tardigrada and Copepoda, 24 rotifers were found. Until today, four so far unknown Bdelloidea could be described: Dissotrocha decembullata n. sp., Dissotrocha hertzogi aculeata n. ssp., Otostephanos jersabeki n. sp. and Philodina foissneri n. sp.  相似文献

The Great Dismal Swamp, located in southeastern Virginia and extending into northeastern North Carolina, is a unique ecosystem which has undergone severe alteration over the last 200 years due to agricultural, municipal and timbering development. The swamp is presently about 50% of its late 1700 size when George Washington commissioned the construction of the first of a series of drainage ditches that have subsequently reduced the swamp aquatic environs to a ditch network draining into Lake Drummond located near the swamp's center. The swamp waters are characterized by a brown color, high suspended organic matter, high acidity and low nutrient levels. This paper presents the first comprehensive study of the zooplankton assemblages of the Great Dismal Swamp.Zooplankton was collected for one year at 14 stations and was dominated by rotifers. Of the 84 species identified, 61 were rotifers, 18 were Cladocera and 5 were copepods. Many of the species collected were cosmopolitan and acid tolerant forms. Dominant lake rotifers included Polyarthra vulgaris, Conochiloides dossuarius, Keratella cochlearis, Trichocerca similis, Synchaeta longipes and Microcodon clavus. Dominant crustaceae included Bosmina longirostris, Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum, Mesocyclops edax, and Tropocyclops prasinus.Usually the ditch zooplankton was the same as that of the lake. Of the seven ditches studied, the most unique chemically and biologically were Interior, Washington, and Portsmouth. Measurable alkalinity was detected in Interior and Washington Ditches. Alkaline water rotifers such as Brachionus, Mytilina, Filinia, Notholca Platyias and Keratella earlinae were found in these ditches. The rotifer, Keratella valga, was only found from Portsmouth Ditch, during a period when water was flowing into the lake and it contained high nutrient levels.Research funded in part by the Virginia Academy of Sciences and the Center for Environmental Studies, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  相似文献

Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), maintained on baker's yeast, were fed for 24h upon two algal diets, Isochrysis galbana (diet A) and Isochrysis galbana + Nannochloropsis gaditana (diet B). (These algal diets were selected for their potential use as essential fatty acid (EFA) boosters, taking into account the requirements of fish larvae). The effect of these algal diets on total lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition was studied. The total lipid content increased after feeding upon both diets but no significant differences were found between the two types. Neutral lipid and polar lipid contents increased and a positive correlation was observed between the neutral lipids content of rotifers and that of the food supplied. However, the content of polar lipids in rotifers did not depend upon that of the diet. The increase in neutral lipid content was found to be higher in rotifers fed upon diet B, compared to diet A which increased the phospholipid content. Non-enriched rotifers contained only small amounts of polyenoic fatty acids, i.e. 18:3n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, the contents of which increased significantly by feeding both diets. The EFA composition (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) of neutral lipids and phopholipids in rotifers reflected the EFA composition of each diet. Diet B-fed rotifers had the highest content in 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3, whereas rotifers fed diet A and the highest 22:6n-3 content. The mixed diet I. galbana + N. gaditana enhanced substantially the composition of lipid classes i.e. neutral lipids and of n-3 PUFA of rotifers in comparison with Isochrysis or yeast diets.  相似文献

The nutritive quality of Nannochloropsis gaditana cultured semicontinuously with different daily renewal rates was tested as a diet for short-term enrichment of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. After 24 h, dramatic differences in the survival, dry weight, and biochemical composition of the rotifers depending on the renewal rate of microalgal cultures were observed. Survival after the feeding period increased with increasing renewal rates. Rotifers fed microalgae from low renewal rate, nutrient-deficient cultures showed low dry weight and organic contents very similar to those of the initial rotifers that were starved for 12 h before the start of the feeding period. On the contrary, rotifers fed nutrient-sufficient microalgal cells underwent up to twofold increases of dry weight and protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents with regard to rotifers fed nutrient-depleted N. gaditana. Consequently, feed conversion rate decreased in these conditions, indicating a better assimilation of the microalgal biomass obtained at high renewal rates. No single microalgal biochemical parameter among those studied can explain the response of the filter feeder. Similarly to gross composition, EPA and n-3 contents in rotifers fed microalgae from nutrient-sufficient cultures were double than the contents found in rotifers fed nutrient-limited microalgae. In addition, very high positive correlations between the contents of EPA and n-3 in N. gaditana and B. plicatilis were observed. These results demonstrate that selecting the appropriate conditions of semicontinuous culture can strongly enhance the nutritional value of microalgae that is reflected in the growth and biochemical composition of the filter-feeder even in short exposure periods.  相似文献

The seasonal succession of phytoplankton diversity, and the variations in the diel vertical distribution of phyto‐ and zooplankton were investigated in a small shallow pond (1.7 m water depth) in 2003. It was inferred that the water tended to stratify weakly in the daytime from February to June. In February and April, the green alga Golenkinia radiata Chodat dominated the phytoplankton assemblage. The cell density of G. radiata greatly decreased in April, when rotifers increased near the bottom. The vertical mixing was attenuated in June, large populations of the euglenoids (Lepocinclis salina Fritsch, Phacus acuminatus Stokes, Trachelomonas hispida (Perty) Stein et Deflandre) developed, and the cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon flos‐aquae var. klebahnii Elenk. appeared at low density. Euglenoids and A. flos‐aquae were mostly distributed in the bottom layer. In late September, when the water was mixed throughout the day, euglenoids and A. flos‐aquae were distributed evenly throughout the water column. The zooplankton (cyclopoid copepods and rotifers) densities in September were the lowest throughout the year. The vertical mixing increased in November, and the phytoplankton community was composed of A. flos‐aquae, P. acuminatus, T. hispida and the green alga Ankistrodesmus falcatus (Corda) Ralfs. In November, at the final stage of water bloom of A. flos‐aquae, its population density decreased with depth. The two euglenoids exhibited similar cell distributions at 0.8 m and 1.6 m during 1–3 November. A. falcatus was distributed evenly throughout the water column; however, when the vertical mixing lessened, the cells at the surface started to sink. Copepod nauplii and rotifers appeared at high densities in November. Seasonal variation in the phytoplankton community structure in the pond seemed to be related to the vertical mixing of the water. In addition, zooplankton, especially rotifers, might play an important role in initiating a spring clear‐water phase and in the bloom collapse of A. flos‐aquae.  相似文献

Zooplankton species composition and abundance variation was studied in Lake Amvrakia, which is a deep, temperate, gypsum karst lake situated in the western Greece. The two year survey of zooplankton revealed 33 species (23 rotifers, five cladocerans, four copepods and one mollusc larva). The mean integrated abundance of the total zooplankton ranged between 83.6 and 442.7 ind. L−1, with the higher density to be recorded in the surface 0–20 m layer. Small numbers of specimens of almost all species were found also in the hypoxic or anoxic hypolimnion. Copepods and especially the calanoid Eudiaptomus drieschi dominated the zooplankton community throughout the sampling period, followed by Dreissena polymorpha larvae, rotifers and cladocerans. Seasonal succession among the cladocerans and the most abundant rotifer species was observed. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was the most important factor for the variation of total zooplankton, as well as for the rotifers’ community. Dissolved oxygen affected copepods and cladocerans, water level correlated mainly with the molluscs larvae of D. polymorpha, while temperature influenced the variation of several rotifers, the cladoceran Diaphanosoma orghidani and the mollusc larvae. Negative correlation of conductivity with the cladoceran Daphnia cucullata and the copepods E. drieschi and Macrocyclops albidus was found. The differences in species composition found in Lake Amvrakia in comparison to the nearby lakes are probably ought to the geographical isolation and perhaps to its particular chemistry (e.g., elevated conductivity).  相似文献

The plankton rotifers Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra vulgaris were sampled at 10 cm below the surface at different distances from two dissimilar shores and in the centre of a small eutrophic lake. Light and depth were measured at each sampling point. In each case the numbers of rotifers per liter increased with distance from the shore. There was a significant correlation between the numbers for the two species for the two shores, but none in the centre. In the case of one shore there was a strong correlation between rotifer numbers and supra-surface ambient light.  相似文献
