A teratoma was found during a planned cesarean section in a 10-year-old primigravida baboon. This teratoma had a female sex chromosome complement and trisomy for chromosome 16. This is the first report of a teratoma in a baboon and the first report of a chromosomal abnormality in a nonhuman primate teratoma. It is also the first case in a nonhuman primate to address the mechanism of origin. Through the use of genetic markers from human chromosomes 5, 8 and 17, the origin of the teratoma was shown to be most consistent with failure of meiosis II or endoreduplication in a mature ovum, while the trisomy for chromosome 16 originated after the formation of the tumor. Over a period of four years, streptozocin has been used to induce diabetes in 10 baboons, all of whom are insulin dependent. We describe our experience with their husbandry, induction of diabetes, insulin therapy, metabolic control and growth rate. Streptozocin dosage of 60 mg/kg readily induces hyperglycemia with minimal hepatic or renal toxicity. Using a once daily injection of mixed short and intermediate acting insulins at a dosage of 2–4 U/kg, it is possible to maintain a degree of metabolic control similar to that attained in patients.  相似文献

A heterologous radioimmunoassay (RIA) for luteinizing hormone (LH) consisting of a cynomolgus LH tracer and an antiserum raised against human chorionic gonadotropin (cynLH:anti-hCG) fulfilled the recognized criteria of reliability when applied to baboon (Papio hamadryas) plasma and pituitary extracts obtained in different endocrine conditions. This RIA is 5.5 times more sensitive than the ovine (oLH:anti-oLH) system, yields estimates of baboon LH (bLH) fairly close to those obtained by in vitro bioassay, and recognizes all bioactive molecular species of bLH present in male and female pituitary extracts. However, the system yields slightly but significantly lower estimates of bLH than the in vitro bioassay.  相似文献

Trisomy 18 is usually a lethal chromosomal abnormality and is the second most common autosomal trisomy in humans, with an incidence of 1:8000 live births. It is commonly associated with abnormalities of the lower and upper extremities, having the frequency of 95% and 65%, respectively. A newborn female olive baboon (Papio hamadryas anubis) was diagnosed with intrauterine growth retardation and severe arthrogryposis-like congenital joint deformities. Cytogenetic analysis including G-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed that the congenital abnormalities were associated with chromosomal mosaicism for trisomy 18. Genetic analysis with microsatellites from chromosome 18 confirmed the maternal origin of the extra chromosome 18. This is the first report of trisomy 18 in the baboon, which may be a promising animal model of human disease.  相似文献

Eighteen genes were assigned to chromosomes in the sacred baboon, Papio hamadryas, by their concordant segregation with the chromosomes in a set of baboon X Chinese hamster somatic cell hybrids. ACY1 was assigned to P. hamadryas chromosome 2 (PHA 2); SOD1 and MDH2 to PHA 3; ME1 and SOD2 to PHA 4; NP, MPI, PKM2, and HEXA to PHA 7; PP to PHA 9; ADA and ITPA to PHA 10; LDHB and TPI1 to PHA 11; MDH1 to PHA 13; ESD to PHA 17; and GPI and PEPD to PHA 20. Regional assignments were possible for ACY1 (PHA 2pter----q1) and MDH2 and SOD1 (PHA 3p). Five other independently segregating markers or syntenic groups (PGD, PGM1; and PEPC; PGM2 and PEPS; IDH1; LDHA and ACP2; and GSR) were also identified. Gene assignments and syntenic groups described in P. hamadryas are compared to those found in P. papio, the rhesus monkey, and man. A possible primate model for human lymphoid disease is discussed.  相似文献

Normal biometric ranges for fetal growth in a captive breeding baboon (Papio hamadryas) colony are described. Measurements include crown-rump length, biparietal diameter, binocular distance, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length and amniotic fluid index. The pattern of fetal growth is compared with other baboon subspecies and man. The uses and limitations of such data for breeding colony management and optimum utilisation of experimentally derived data are discussed.  相似文献

Construction of genetic linkage maps for nonhuman primate species provides information and tools that are useful for comparative analysis of chromosome structure and evolution and facilitates comparative analysis of meiotic recombination mechanisms. Most importantly, nonhuman primate genome linkage maps provide the means to conduct whole genome linkage screens for localization and identification of quantitative trait loci that influence phenotypic variation in primate models of common complex human diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes. In this study we improved a previously published baboon whole genome linkage map by adding more loci. New loci were added in chromosomal regions that did not have sufficient marker density in the initial map. Relatively low heterozygosity loci from the original map were replaced with higher heterozygosity loci. We report in detail on baboon chromosomes 5, 12, and 18 for which the linkage maps are now substantially improved due to addition of new informative markers.  相似文献

A lymphoma outbreak occurred at the Sukhumi Center in the Late 1960's, when 12 baboons were inoculated with blood from human leukemia patients. Out of a total of 3219 animals, 218 contracted lymphoma and died. This outbreak appears to be primarily horizontal in transmission. Genetic investigations reveal that: (1) inbreeding does not increase risk of lymphoma; (2) there is a weak association between the PGM2 locus and lymphoma; (3) based upon path analysis, there is evidence of a significant transmissible component (genetic predisposition) passed from the parental to the next generation.  相似文献

Trisomy 13 in humans is the third most common autosomal abnormality at birth, after trisomy 21 and trisomy 18. It has a reported incidence of between 1:5,000 and 1:30,000 live births. It is associated with multiple abnormalities, many of which shorten lifespan. We describe here the first reported case of a baboon (Papio hamadryas) with trisomy of chromosome 17, which is homologous to human chromosome 13. The trisomic infant was born to a consanguineous pair of baboons and had morphological characteristics similar to those observed in human trisomy 13, including bilateral polydactyly in the upper limbs, a patent foramen ovale, and pyelectasis. Molecular DNA analysis using human chromosome 13 markers was consistent with the affected infant inheriting two copies of chromosome 17 derived from the same parental chromosome. This trisomy was, therefore, due to either an error in meiosis II or the result of postzygotic nondisjunction. The parental origin, however, could not be determined.  相似文献

Primates change a variety of behavioral responses during short-term exposure to crowding. Under crowded conditions, rates of aggression, submissive behavior, and affiliative behavior may increase or decrease. Different patterns of change among these three categories of response have been interpreted as various coping "strategies" for managing the increased risk of conflict under crowded conditions. Grooming is of particular interest because this behavior is known to have a calming influence on the recipient and could be used to manage conflict under tense situations. A captive group of nine hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) composed of two harems was observed under short-term crowding to determine whether this species adopts conflict-management strategies similar to those described in other primates. The aggression, submission, affiliation, and displacement activities of the six adults in the group (two males and four females) were recorded, and behaviors in their small indoor quarters was compared with baseline behaviors in the outdoor section of their enclosure, which had over 10 times more space. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare behavioral rates during crowding with baseline rates recorded immediately after crowding and during matched controls collected at the same time of day as the crowding sessions. Aggression and submission rates did not change significantly across conditions. Huddling together and proximity increased during crowding, and females increased grooming of their harem male during crowding. Displacement activities (e.g., pacing and self-grooming) increased during crowding, but scratching, an indicator of anxiety in primates, did not. The pattern of behavior exhibited by this group conforms to an active "tension-reduction" strategy in which animals successfully reduce the higher risk of aggression during crowding.  相似文献

Understanding the extent of human–primate conflict is crucial to the development of conservation and management strategies. We carried out this study in an unprotected area of central Ethiopia to examine the magnitude of human–hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) conflict and to assess the attitude of local farmers towards baboons in Wonchit Valley. In 2014, we interviewed 119 adult respondents using a structured questionnaire. Local farmers considered hamadryas baboons to be the major pest in the area. All respondents reported that hamadryas baboons caused crop raiding and small livestock predation in the region. Respondents reported that a shortage of fruit producing wild trees and ready availability of crops were the main causes of conflict between farmers and hamadryas baboons. We found that hamadryas baboons damaged cereal crops at dusk and dawn during full moonlight, and most (89.9%) respondents claimed that they were not interested in hamadryas baboon conservation. Our results indicate that human–hamadryas baboon conflict has a strongly negative impact on both baboon conservation and local farmers. We suggest that to mitigate the human–hamadryas baboon conflict, job opportunities such as beekeeping should be introduced in the region.  相似文献

Cranial form in subspecies of Papio baboons (Papio hamadryas) varies in relation to size, geography, and sex. However, knowledge about this variation is based mainly on adults, precluding direct assessments of the evolutionary factors that are ultimately responsible for adult shape variation. Consequently, this study tests hypotheses about the development of size and shape differences among subspecies of Papio baboons, anticipating limited evolutionary divergences in the ontogenetic pathways leading to adult endpoints. Geometric morphometric and bivariate allometric analyses are used to explore developmental size and shape variation. Allometric scaling in adult Papio baboons occurs because both sexes and all subspecies follow similar developmental pathways to a variety of adult forms. However, complex allometry contributes to form differences, producing potentially important shape differences that emerge during development. Modest shape differences that are statistically independent of size distinguish chacma baboons (P. h. ursinus) from other forms. A small-headed subspecies, the Kinda baboon (P. h. kindae), also presents a distinctive ontogeny, and may provide insights into the evolution of size change in this species. Variation among subspecies that is statistically independent of size involves the rostrum, zygomatic breadths, and cranial flexion. These features may be related to diet, but the precise biomechanical correlates of baboon form variation remain unclear.  相似文献

It is important to characterise the amount of variation on the mammalian Y chromosome in order to assess its potential for use in evolutionary studies. We report very low levels of polymorphism on the Y chromosome of Saudi-Arabian hamadryas baboons, Papio hamadryas hamadryas. We found no segregating sites on the Y, despite sequence analysis of 3 kb noncontiguous intron sequence in 16 males with divergent autosomal microsatellite genotypes, and a further analysis of 1.1 kb intron sequence in 97 males from four populations by SSCP. In addition, we tested seven human-derived Y-linked microsatellites in baboons. Only four of these loci were male-specific and only one was polymorphic in our 97 male sample set. Polymorphism on the Y chromosome of Arabian hamadryas appears to be low compared to other primate species for which data are available (eg humans, chimpanzees and bonobos). Low effective population size (Ne) of paternal genes due to polygyny and female-biased adult sex ratio is a potential reason for low Y chromosome variation in this species. However, low Ne for the Y should be counterbalanced to some extent by the species' atypical pattern of male philopatry and female-biased dispersal. Allelic richness averaged over seven loci was not significantly different between an African and an Arabian population, suggesting that loss of variation during the colonisation of Arabia does not explain low Y variation. Finally, in the absence of nucleotide polymorphism, it is unclear to what extent selection could be responsible for low Y variation in this species.  相似文献

The concept of dominance has been shown to be useful in describing and predicting social interactions in group-living animals. However, the dominance relationships among adult hamadryas males (Papio hamadryas) are poorly understood, and systematic data are missing from the literature. This study investigated dominance relationships among male hamadryas baboons by applying novel statistical techniques to systematic detailed data on agonistic interactions. We also analyzed the dominance relationship with male age and evaluated the association between dominance and access to mating partners (i.e. the number of adult females per one-male unit (OMU)), food resources (i.e. monopolization of feeding areas), and greeting interactions. The derived dominance indexes showed that, in general, leader males were dominant over followers, and that dominance ability did not correlate with male age. Individual dominance values were very close to each other, suggesting that dominance relationships among hamadryas males were not very rigid. In addition, dominance values were positively correlated with number of adult females per OMU but not with feeding priority. Finally, greeting interactions occurred more frequently between individuals with similar dominance values and with low levels of dominance decidedness. We suggest the need of further studies, especially in wild populations, to confirm our findings.  相似文献

In accordance with a memorandum of understanding in cancer research between scientists in the USSR and the USA, virological studies were performed on two baboons from the Russian colony at the Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy at Sukhumi where several cases of leukemia have been observed over the past few years. Foamyvirus isolations were made from lymphoid cells of both of these monkeys, one of which had a confirmed case of lymphoma. The isolates were similar to each other serologically and morphologically, possessed characteristics typical of foamyviruses, and cross-reacted to a low level with antibody to simian foamyvirus type 1.  相似文献
