Electroantennogram responses of adult American cockroaches were recorded for the sex pheromone and 30 kinds of monoterpenoids. Strong responses to the sex pheromone were obtained from the antennae of male adults, but not from females. The compounds possessing a hydroxyl or carbonyl group produced significant EAG responses in the antennae. Bornyl acetate, however, was an exception and gave strong responses in both male and female antennae. There was basically no difference between the antennal responsiveness to monoterpenoids tested in both sexes. 相似文献

The electroantennogram (EAG) technique was applied as a monitoring tool to isolate germacrene-D, a sex pheromone mimic of the American cockroach. Large values of the male/female ratio, and its index derived from EAG responses of adult males and females to a standard, indicated significant amounts of germacrene-D in plant fractions. Monitoring with behavioural assays and gas chromatographic analysis during the isolation confirmed that the EAG technique using the male/female index was a good indicator in the isolation of sexually active components. 相似文献

Temperature affects the production of and response to sex pheromone by the American cockroach. Female sex-pheromone production is directly related to acclimation temperature and rapidly decreases 1 week after acclimation to lower temperatures. Production decreases slightly between weeks 1 and 2 and remains constant thereafter. Phermone-release rates are not affected by substrate temperature. Male response to a 1 ♀-equivalent hr pheromone dose is also temperature dependent. Maximal response was obtained at 26.7°C. Acclimated males were able to perceive pheromone (EAG technique) and capable of movement at lower temperatures (10°C), suggesting central nervous system inhibition. 相似文献

Male Periplaneta americana were photographed in a 2.4 m diameter arena containing a female sex pheromone source in the centre. Orientation pathways were digitized and analysed with regard to chemo-orientation mechanisms employed. Indirect components of chemo-orientation include arrestment near the pheromone source owing to an increase in turning rate and decrease in rate of locomotion, and zig-zag motor patterns that facilitate localization of the source. Most males were successful in locating the source if they moved to within 30 cm. Direct components of chemo-orientation include looping and relatively sharp correcting turns.No significant differences in orientation were observed between intact and unilaterally-antennectomized males, except that correcting turns close to the pheromone source were significantly less precise in males with one antenna. These results indicate that males with two antennae have an advantage over males with one antenna in being able to employ simultaneous information processing close to the pheromone source. Males with crossed antennae were unable to locate the pheromone source, suggesting that the fixed position of their antennae interfered with sensory information input. 相似文献

EAG responses to highly purified sex pheromones (periplanone-A and -B), sex pheromone mimics [germacrene-D, (+)-verbanyl acetate and (+)-trans-verbenyl acetate] and general odor (camphor) were recorded from both sexes of adult and three nymphal stages (7, 10 and 11th instars) of the American cockroach. 2. The M/F ratios were evaluated for each stage by stimulation with the above chemicals. 3. The ratio values indicated undeveloped sex pheromone receptor on the antennae of 7th male instar and females of all the stages. 1. With a view to clarifying the role of oxygen in the olfactory reception of insects, the intact antenna of the male American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) was studied under normal conditions and during reversible anoxia, external or tracheal, using an electroantennogram (EAG) elicited by a sex pheromone stimulation. As a first step, the anatomical and electrical characteristics of the antenna were investigated. 2. Based on the microanatomical study, a cockroach antenna was characterized by structural parameters reflecting the haemolymph and gas exchange in the antenna. Valves in the wall of a haemolymphatic vessel were discovered. 3. The resting DC background voltage (DCBV) and the EAG were continuously recorded and proved to be more strongly affected by tracheal anoxia than by anoxia from the outside. 4. A minimal electrical model of the antenna based on the Thurm-Kaissling-De Kramer equivalent circuit of a sensillum was shown to be valid to explain the origin of the DCBV and EAG as well as their changes after oxygen cutoff and resumption. 5. Two formal opposing processes, excitation and desensitization, probably related to the receptor mechanisms, have been used to interpret the kinetics of the EAG and the effect of anoxia on EAG parameters. Winged (alate) virginoparae were induced in the laboratory by crowding the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) under long-day conditions. Males and gynoparae (the winged female form that produces sexual females) were induced by short days. Electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioural responses were investigated in each of the three forms to two aphid sex pheromone components, (-)-(4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol and (+)-(4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, and benzaldehyde, a volatile which is released by the winter host plant. All three compounds elicited EAG responses with the males showing the highest sensitivity to each compound. Both the nepetalactol and the nepetalactone elicited larger EAG responses in gynoparae than in the winged virginoparae but antennae from virginoparae were more responsive to benzaldehyde. Although the nepetalactone is not a sex pheromone component in R. padi the EAG responses were similar to those evoked by the nepetalactol, the sex pheromone, in all three aphid forms. In a linear-track olfactometer, significantly more male R. padi moved into air containing nepetalactol, nepetalactone or benzaldehyde than into a simultaneous choice of clean air (i.e. attraction) but nepetalactol was more attractive than nepetalactone. Males, however, showed no response to a mixture of nepetalactol and nepetalactone. Gynoparae were attracted only to the nepetalactol but were less sensitive than the males and showed no response to the nepetalactone or benzaldehyde. In contrast, alate virginoparae showed no behavioural responses to any of the compounds. The present study supports the idea that the male R. padi utilise both sex pheromone and benzaldehyde for mate/host-plant location in autumn. It also demonstrates, for the first time, polyphenic differences in the olfactory responses at the peripheral level between the two female forms. Such differences impact on the life-cycle strategy where winged virginoparae move between graminaceous summer host plants while gynoparae move from the summer hosts to the bird cherry, winter host. The latter move appears to be assisted by the sex pheromone released by sexual females, already present on that host, acting as an aggregation pheromone. 相似文献

Antennal responses of male Adoxophyes orana and Clepsis spectrana to their two pheromone components, cis-9- and cis-11-tetradecenyl acetate (tda) were studied. Responses to a dilution series of the components alone and in five mixture ratios were recorded. The main pheromone component for A. orana (cis-9-tda) and for C. spectrana (cis-11-tda) gave the highest electroantennogram (EAG) responses, respectively, but mixtures corresponding to the optimum field attracting ratios for each species elicited higher responses than the separate components.The geometrical isomers, trans-9- and trans-11-tda, which inhibit male A. orana response in the field, do not appear to give an additive EAG response when mixed with the pheromone components. 相似文献

Many animals depend on pheromone communication for successful mating. Sex pheromone in insects is usually released by females to attract males. In American cockroaches, the largest glomerulus (B-glomerulus) in the male antennal lobe (first-order olfactory center) processes the major component of sex pheromone. Using intracellular recordings combined with fine neuroanatomical techniques, we provide evidence that the female homolog of the male B-glomerulus also acts as a sex pheromone-specific detector. Whereas ordinary glomeruli that process normal environmental odors are innervated by single projection neurons (PNs), the B-glomerulus in both sexes is innervated by multiple PNs, one of which possesses a thicker axon, termed here B-PN. Both soma size and axon diameter were smaller on B-PNs from females compared with B-PNs from males. The female B-PNs also produce fewer terminal arborizations in the protocerebrum than male B-PNs. Termination fields in the lateral protocerebrum of the female B-PN are mostly segregated from those formed by other uniglomerular PNs innervating ordinary glomeruli. Female B-PN activity was greatest in response to sex pheromone but lower than that in the male B-PN. This specific detection system suggests that sex pheromone affects the behavior and/or endocrine system of female cockroaches. 相似文献

The electrophysiological and behavioural responses of male Sesamia nonagrioides Lefèbvre (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to several synthetic blends of its sex pheromone components were investigated. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings showed the greatest response to a 77:8:10:5 blend of the four compounds found in the female glands: (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol, (Z)-11-hexadecenal and dodecyl acetate. A logistic equation was fitted to the dose-response data and differences in relative EAG responses were analysed by deriving five parameters of this equation. Flight responses of males were also evaluated in a wind tunnel where the proposed blend (77:8:10:5) also elicited the best response. Field tests confirmed the laboratory findings as the 77:8:10:5 blend captured more S. nonagrioides males than other pheromone mixtures and showed more selectivity for male S. nonagrioides over other noctuid species, Discestra trifolii Rottenberg and Lacanobia oleracea L., but not for Mythimna unipuncta Haworth, a species with a sex pheromone composition almost identical to that of S. nonagrioides. 相似文献

The effects of female sex pheromone concentration and time of day on behavioral responses of male brown-banded cockroaches were monitored with a two-choice olfactometer. The duration of each behavior or behavioral event in a deterministic response sequence and the probabilities of behavioral transitions were analyzed. Pheromone concentration had a significant effect on all behaviors in the response sequence. The time of testing, relative to the entrainment photoperiodic regime, significantly affected behavioral events early in the sequence but not later-occuring behaviors. Although the probability of males choosing the pheromone rather than the solvent control was a function of the pheromone concentration, it was independent of the time of testing. By affecting the probability of behavioral transitions, the pheromone concentration and time of testing determined the number of insects exhibiting specific behaviors in the response sequence. The behavioral response sequence can be characterized by probabilities of behavioral transitions along with latencies of early behavioral acts. 相似文献

Electrical responses of single olfactory receptor neurons of the male redbanded leafroller moth were elicited by each of the principle components of the sex pheromone and six other behaviorally active compounds. Response frequencies to equal intensities of each of these compounds and changes in response frequency with increasing amounts of any one compound, varied from receptor to receptor. These differences in response characteristics appear to be due to factors intrinsic to the olfactory recptor neuron and not to factors external to it. The encoding of odor quality by these receptor neurons cannot be in the simple presence or absence of activity in any one of them. Rather, odor quality may be encoded by the pattern of activity which invariably arises across an ensemble of receptor neurons, each having its own distribution of sensitivities. 相似文献

The responses of mechanoreceptor neurons in the antennal chordotonal organ have been examined in cockroaches by intracellular recording methods. The chordotonal organ was mechanically stimulated by sinusoidal movement of the flagellum. Stimulus frequencies were varied between 0.5 and 150 Hz. Receptor neurons responded with spike discharges to mechanical stimulation, and were classed into two groups from plots of their average spike frequencies against stimulus frequency. Neurons in one group responded to stimulation over a wide frequency range (from 0.5 to 150 Hz), whereas those in a second group were tuned to higher frequency stimuli. The peak stimulus frequency at which receptor neurons showed maximum responses differed from cell to cell. Some had a peak response at a stimulus frequency given in the present study (from 0.5 to 150 Hz), whereas others were assumed to have peak responses beyond the highest stimulus frequency examined. The timing for the initiation of spikes or of a burst of spikes plotted against each stimulus cycle revealed that spike generation was phase-locked in most cells. Some cells showed phase-independent discharges to stimulation at lower frequency, but increasing stimulus frequencies spike initiation began to assemble at a given phase of the stimulus cycle. The response patterns observed are discussed in relation to the primary process of mechanoreception of the chordotonal organ. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The upwind flight response of individual male lightbrown apple moths, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), to twenty combinations of the two pheromone components, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (E,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate (E,E-9,11–14:OAc), was observed in a sustained-flight tunnel. At the lowest dosage of E11-14:OAc tested (3 μg), a significantly greater percentage of males flew upwind to and landed at a source emitting 10% E1,E-9, 11–14:OAc than to all other sources. As the source dosage was increased, males showed decreased specificity of upwind flight to ratios of the two components. However, at the highest dosage of E11-14:OAc tested (300 μg), the response specificity of males shifted to blends containing lower percentages of E,E-9,11–14:OAc. The addition of tetradecyl acetate to a blend of the two components did not result in any detectable increase in male response. Analyses of the pheromone glands of individual female Iightbrown apple moths showed that females produced a range of ratios of E11-14;OAc:E,E-9,11–14:OAc from 100:2.2 to 100:11.4 with a median of approximately 100:7, reasonably paralleling the peak response of males. Pre-exposure of males to a blend of the two components, followed by exposure to E11-14:OAc alone (previously reported as a 'memory' effect) resulted in no significant response to E11-14:OAc alone. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The amount of the major component of the cuticular sex pheromone, 3, 11-dimethyl-2-nonacosanone, on individual female German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), as a function of age was determined by gas-liquid-chromatographic analysis. Accumulation of phermone increased with age in both virgin and mated females. During the first gono-trophic cycle, the pheromone accumulated most rapidly when oocyte growth rates were maximal (days 5–10), and least rapidly while the female carried an ootheca (days 11–32). Pheromone accumulation was similar in virgin and mated females when the same physiological stages (determined by oocyte maturation) were considered. Inhibition of Juvenile Hormone release, through allatectomy, chemicals (precocene or fluoromevalonate), or through mechanical egg case implants, suppressed or delayed pheromone production and oocyte growth. The Juvenile Hormone analogue ZR512 induced allatectomized or head-ligated females and females with chemically or mechanically inhibited corpora allata to produce pheromone and enlarge their basal oocytes. Finally, ZR512 applied to intact females stimulated pheromone production in a dose-dependent manner. 相似文献

Female American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana, release two sex pheromones, periplanone-A and periplanone-B, each of which is perceived by a specialized receptor type on the male antennae. This study investigates whether male behavioural responses to both components may differ qualitatively or quantitatively. Running, upwind orientation and wing-raising were evoked by stimulation with either component. The intensity of running increased with stimulus concentration in much the same way for both substances. However, the relative effectiveness of periplanone-A was 30 times lower in behavioural assays than in the electroantennogram. Behavioural responses to periplanone-B declined faster and were more easily adapted by repeated stimulation than those to periplanone-A. It is hypothesized that periplanone-B is responsible for long distance attraction while periplanone-A influences male behaviour near the female. 相似文献

A volatile sex pheromone is produced in an adult female-specific gland located on the anterior of the last abdominal tergite of the female German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In this area, the cuticle forms deep depressions in which a large number of cuticular orifices are located. The cuticular orifices are connected to secretory cells via cuticular ducts surrounded by duct cells. The pheromone gland exhibits a clear developmental maturation in relation to sexual maturation of the female. The secretory cells of a newly formed gland in the imaginal female are small and contain few secretory vesicles. The amount of extractable pheromone in the gland is low on day-0 but it increases with age and peaks on day-6. The secretory cells in a mature day-6 gland are characterized by a large number of electron-lucid secretory vesicles. abundant RER and SER, a large nucleus and a long, convoluted end apparatus which is lined with numerous microvilli. The contents of the secretory vesicles are exocytosed into extracellular reservoirs at the base of microvilli and then transported to the cuticular surface through the long ducts. The supportive function of the duct cell in the glandular organization and developmental regulation of the gland are discussed. 相似文献

Electrophysiological responses of adult males and females of C. carnea to commonly occurring plant volatiles were recorded using the electroantennogram technique. Responses to 28 volatiles evaluated indicate that both depolarization and recovery to the baseline were rapid in females compared to males. Normalized EAG responses relative to the standard, trans-caryophyllene reveal significant differences between the chemicals as also between the sexes. The response of males to several of the compounds, particularly the terpenoids was higher than females. The pooled averages to the different classes of chemical compounds reveal greater response for fatty acid derivatives and terpenoids, particularly the oxygenated monoterpenes and the sesquiterpenes. These findings are discussed in relation to volatiles released in the cotton ecosystem. 相似文献

Douglas fir seed chalcids females oviposit specifically into Douglas cones which they locate using olfactory and visual cues. We have tested whether this specialization was correlated with a specialized sensitivity towards cone volatiles. Field collected adults were presented a series of pure volatile chemicals. Electroantennogram responses (EAG) were recorded to generally occurring terpenoids and straight chain alcohols and aldehydes found in flowers and plant leaves. Monoterpenes identified in Douglas cone headspaces (alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, 3-thujene, alpha- and beta-phellandrene, gamma-terpinene and myrcene) elicited lower EAG responses than fatty acid derivatives corresponding to green odours. The EAG response profile of females differed significantly from that of males. Females were very sensitive to hexanol-1, heptanal, (Z)-3 hexenol-1, terpineol and terpinen-4-ol. Male responses were significantly higher to humid air, nerolidol, thujan-4-ol, hexanal, carvacrol, piperitone and farnesol. Several compounds (Z- verbenol, carvone, jasminol, geraniol, nerol and eugenol) elicited long lasting electrophysiological responses (over 5 s) in both sexes. 相似文献

In autumn 1991, aphid parasitoids of the genusPraon (Hymenoptera; Braconidae) were caught in water traps with lures containing synthetic aphid sex pheromone components at three
sites in England and one in Germany. At two of the English sites and at the German site, the traps were placed in winter cereal
fields whilst the third English site was in woodland. Three species were caught,P. volucre, P. dorsale andP. abjectum. Those caught in cereal fields were almost entirelyP. volucre, whilstP. dorsale dominated at the woodland site. Of the known aphid sex pheromone components, the most effective lure was the (+)-(4aS, 7S,
7aR)-nepetalactone. Nepetalactone traps placed at the woodland site in spring and summer caught fewPraon females, and attraction may be confined to the autumn, when sexual female aphids are present in the field. Male parasitoids
did not respond to the aphid pheromones at any time, although they were caught in suction traps operated at the woodland site
during the autumn. At the cereal sites height had a significant influence on the efficiency of the pheromone traps, those
placed just above the crop canopy being most effective. There was no evidence that any other genus of parasitoid responded
