Abstract. 1. To investigate the role of intra-guild predation in mediating the impact of the natural enemy complex on herbivore populations, a manipulative field experiment was conducted using uncaged plots (islets of Spartina cordgrass) on a North American salt marsh. The densities (moderate or low) of two invertebrate predators, the generalist wolf spider Pardosa littoralis and the specialist mirid bug Tytthus vagus , were manipulated in a 2 × 2 factorial design, and the resulting treatment effects on the population growth of their herbivorous prey, Prokelisia planthoppers, were assessed.
2. The abundance of wolf spiders on experimental islets was unaffected by the presence of mirid bugs, however the density of mirid bugs was influenced very negatively by the presence of the wolf spider.
3. The negative effect of the wolf spider on mirid bugs most probably resulted from the intra-guild predation of mirids by spiders because planthopper limitation by the wolf spider alone was significantly greater than when both predators were present.
4. As a result of intra-guild predation, planthopper population growth was positive in the presence of both predators, despite the fact that each predator alone promoted a decrease in planthopper population growth.
5. Notably, the occurrence of intra-guild predation diminished top-down impacts on planthopper populations in a relatively simple food web where strong top-down effects were expected. This result, however, was limited to habitats on the marsh with simply structured vegetation lacking leaf litter. 相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) is an interaction that frequently occurs in natural enemy communities, especially aphidophagous predators. This research investigated IGP intensity between Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae), with Hippodamia variegata Goeze (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Five predator combinations including second and third larvae of H. variegata and third instar larvae of E. balteatus plus control treatment (totally six treatments) were tested. The effect of IGP on cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) population density was investigated on sweet pepper seedlings under laboratory microcosms. In most combinations, the third instar larvae of E. balteatus alone reduced an A. gossypii population more efficiently than ladybird larvae and their combinations. Furthermore, IGP between third instar of E. balteatus and second larvae of H. variegata was asymmetrical; second instar H. variegata larvae were always the intraguild prey for third instar E. balteatus. This study evaluated the predation by Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) at various densities of larvae and pupae of the pest Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). We tested predator behavior of female P. nigrispinus at six experimental densities (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 prey items in a 1‐l transparent plastic container, replicated 15 times for each density) of both the fourth instar and pupae of P. xylostella. The number of prey consumed was monitored every 15 min for 12 h and was subsequently monitored at 24 h. Podisus nigrispinus females were weighed before and after the experiments to determine the effect of different densities of prey on their weight gain. Female predators had a Type‐II functional response, with attack rate estimated at 1.387 and 0.260 and a handling time of 0.091 and 0.183 h?1 for larvae and pupae, respectively. Podisus nigrispinus consumed on average 10.9 larvae or 5.5 pupae in 24 h. Despite the similarity of the response type, P. nigrispinus preferred to feed on larvae, rather than on pupae. 相似文献

We compared egg parasitization of two sporadic pests of avocado, Persea americana Miller, by Trichogramma platneri Nagarkatti reared on Sitotroga cerealella (Oliver) (=smaller parasitoids) with those reared on Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (= larger parasitoids) in the laboratory. Large T. platneri females invested less time than smaller parasitoids in obtaining offspring from eggs of either Amorbia cuneana Walsingham or Sabulodes aegrotata (Gueneé). Furthermore, large T. platneri invested substantially more time (ca. 3-fold) in obtaining offspring from S. aegrotata than A. cuneana eggs. These investment times positively correlated with percentage egg-load retained by a female after it had ceased exploiting a host species. This occurred even though the offspring produced by a parasitoid from either host species manifested the same size and fecundity (= quality). Host species utilization in the laboratory mirrored that observed in the avocado groves of southern California following augmentative release of commercially produced T. platneri (Oatman & Platner, 1985). Explanations for these differences in host utilization are discussed along with their implications for augmentative biological control. 相似文献
