The harmful influence of the chronic alcohol ingestion on the male reproductive system leads to important alterations including hypogonadism and feminization, besides the morphological and functional disorganization of the different sexual glands. So, the aim of this study was to analyse the structural changes on the ventral lobe of the prostate of rats with hormonal replacement associated to chronic alcohol ingestion. A total of 30 rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) was divided into three groups: control-received water; alcoholic-received ethanol diluted to 20% and hormone-treated alcoholic-received ethanol diluted to 20% associated with the administering of testosterone (5mg/kg of weight) during the last 30 days of treatment. After 150 days of treatment, the animals were sacrificed, the prostate removed and submitted to transmission and scanning electron microscopies, histochemical analysis for acid phosphatase, testosterone level and stereologic analysis. In the alcoholic group the results demonstrated reduction of the total cellular volume and disorganization of the organelles involved in the secretory process. It was characterized a partial recovery of the cellular volume after treatment with testosterone. It was concluded that the ethanol impaired the cellular morphology and the hormonal replacement by itself did not bring about efficient remodeling of the organelles responsible for the secretory process. 相似文献

Eight litters of Rattus norvegicus of the PVG/C hooded strain were observed in order to investigate the roles of individuality, sexuality and age in playful behaviour.
Three measures of social play, namely, initiations, numbers of play bouts and numbers of playful elements performed were all found to be positively correlated. The incidence of social and solitary play were also positively correlated so that a concept of "playfulness" appeared to be justifiable. Playfulness showed no correlation with the general level of non-playful locomotor activity.
Male rats were more playful than females but only minor sex-related differences were found to occur in the sequential organisation of play.
Older rats showed longer play bouts and a higher degree of temporal organisation. Considerable individual differences in playfulness were recorded and in single sex litters playful rats were found to play together.
The majority of opponents, in playfighting, alternated between the roles of attacker and defender. 相似文献

We studied the departure from the physical optimality of the bronchial tree of rats using both i) the minimum volume and power and ii) the minimum surface and drag criteria, considering the bronchial junction as the unit study based on Zamir's model for vascular trees. Our results show deviations of the junctions of the bronchial tree from the expected optimums in the proximal airway that can be explained by both, the turbulent or transitional flow regime, and the airway's necessity to distribute its terminal branches in the alveolar surface filling the thoracic volume. The departures of the observed values at the optimum for the minimum volume and power were significantly different than the obtained departure values for the minimum surface and drag criteria. The departure from the optimum was directly related to the diameter of the smallest branch. The slopes of the regressions for the two criteria were different. The regression lines intercept at a bronchial diameter d2 = 0.129 mm. This result agreed with the idea that the tube diameter is limited at small values by the increasing flow resistance with decreasing tube diameter while at large values is limited by the increasing tube volume and dead space with increasing tube diameter. 相似文献

Summary The method of Glenner et al. for the histochemical demonstration of MAO activity was studied by means of scanning microdensitometry and discrete measurement of optical density (-590 nm) of the liver and brain tissues sections.The experiments indicated that: (1) The optimal time of incubation (the thickness of sections is 15 m) is 60–90 min. (2) The histochemical reaction proceeds with the following substrates: dopamine, noradrenalin, serotonin, and tryptamine. (3) Iproniazid is the best inhibitor for preincubation whereas for simultaneous inhibition the substrate semicarbazide is better. (4) The incubation under the anaerobic conditions caused a considerable decrease of the stain intensity of the sections. We consider these data to indicate that both the aldehydes and acids formed under oxidation may take part in direct reduction of NBT to diformazan. (5) The histochemical reaction for MAO without substrates testifies to the presence of endogenous amines or other redox reactions leading to the reduction of NBT. 相似文献

褐家鼠Rattus norvegicus可能是云南省部分鼠疫流行区的储存宿主之一, 其体表的某些寄生虫种类可能是人类疾病的传播媒介。为了解洱海周边地带褐家鼠的体表寄生虫群落, 并对其医学和兽医学的重要性进行描述。用U检验和相关分析的统计方法对2003-2004年采自云南洱海(中国滇西北著名的淡水湖泊)周边地区的431头褐家鼠的体表寄生虫群落进行了研究。用构成比(C), 侵染率(P)和平均丰富度(A)反映体表寄生虫的流行和密度状况。调查点位于我国11大鼠疫自然疫源地之一, 此地也是我国恙虫病和流行性出血热的流行地区。结果表明: 431头褐家鼠中307头寄生有体表寄生虫, 侵染率为71%。采集到的体表寄生虫有47种, 包括23种恙螨、16种革螨、6种蚤和2种吸虱, 其中16种以前已经被证明是人类疾病的媒介。结果提示褐家鼠的体表寄生虫物种多样性高。 相似文献

In the stem lineage of therians, a comprehensive reorganization of limb and body mechanics took place to provide dynamic stability for rapid locomotion in a highly structured environment. At what was probably the same time, mammals developed an active sense of touch in the form of movable mystacial vibrissae. The rhythmic movements of the limbs and vibrissae are controlled by central pattern-generating networks which might interact with each other in sensorimotor control. To test this possible interaction, we studied covariation between the two by investigating speed-dependent adjustments in temporal and spatial parameters of forelimb and vibrissal kinematics in the rat. Furthermore, the possible role of carpal vibrissae in connecting the two oscillating systems was explored. We compared locomotion on continuous and discontinuous substrates in the presence and absence of the mystacial or/and carpal vibrissae across a speed range of 0.2–0.5 m/s and found that a close coupling of the kinematics of the two oscillating systems appears to be precluded by their differential dependence on the animal's speed. Speed-related changes in forelimb kinematics mainly occur in temporal parameters, whereas vibrissae change their spatial excursion. However, whisking frequency is always high enough that at least one whisk cycle falls into the swing phase of the limb, which is the maximum critical period for sensing the substrate on which the forepaw will be placed. The influence of tactile cues on forelimb positional control is more subtle than expected. Tactile cues appear to affect the degree of parameter variation but not average parameters or the failure rate of limbs during walking on a perforated treadmill. The carpal vibrissae appear to play a role in sensing the animal's speed by measuring the duration of the stance phase. The absence of this cue significantly reduces speed-related variation in stride frequency and vibrissal protraction. 相似文献

The "cheese effect" is the clinically most important side effect of structurally different MAO inhibitors. It occurs mainly as a result of the interaction of MAO inhibitor with tyramine in foodstuffs. Anaesthetised rats and cats were used in order to investigate and compare the influence of the effect of tyramine by selective MAO type-B inhibitors with that produced by non-selective and A-selective MAO inhibitors on the one hand, and on the other hand, different MAO-B inhibitors with (-)deprenyl. (-)Deprenyl was the only one which inhibited the effect of tyramine in the experimental animals used, while other MAO inhibitors potentiated the tyramine effect. Therefore this study indicates that not only non-selective and A-selective inhibitors potentiate the effect of tyramine but selective inhibitors of B-type MAO as well. The inhibition of tyramine uptake by (-)deprenyl is a remarkable exception from the rule. 相似文献

The presence of introduced Norway rats Rattus norvegicus has raised concerns for the fate of the large least auklet Aethia pusilla colony situated at Sirius Point, Kiska Island, Alaska. Previous studies have documented extreme interannual variation in least auklet reproductive success and potential drastic population declines, both of which have been attributed to the varying abundance of, and predation by, Norway rats. A diet study would resolve the uncertainty that remains about the role of rats in the auklet's reproductive failure and the colony's decline. Our main objectives here were to quantify the variation in diet of introduced Norway rats and assess predation on least auklets. Using stable isotope analysis we document wide variability in rat diet dependent on location and provide direct evidence that Norway rats are preferentially preying on least auklets at Sirius Point. In conclusion, we hypothesize that the observed wide variability in rat diet will contribute to the persistence of rats on Kiska long after auklets have been extirpated. The persistence of rats enabled by their foraging plasticity will increase their effects by creating ecological traps within which prospecting individuals will fall and be depredated. This has large conservation consequences as it suggests that when seabirds are extirpated recolonization by prospecting birds is virtually impossible and island ecosystems will continue to be negatively affected and altered as long as introduced predators, such as rats, remain within them. 相似文献

We evaluated the occurrence of social wasps in the decomposition process in tropical rainforest in central Amazonia (Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil), using cadavers of rats as attractants, exposed in suspended cages. Ten species, in three genera, of social wasps were collected only in the initial stages of decay (fresh and bloated). Five species were collected, mainly in the fresh stage, feeding on flesh: Agelaia angulata, Agelaia constructor, Agelaia fulvofasciata, Agelaia pallipes and Angiopolybia pallens. Five species were collected, mainly in the bloated stage, feeding on flesh and eggs and first instar larvae of dipteran: Agelaia testacea, Angiopolybia obidensis, Apoica arborea, Apoica pallens and Apoica thoracica. Due to the aspect of the injuries caused by the wasps to the carcass, they may be mistaken as skin ulcers, burns or abrasions, which may mislead a forensic investigation. 相似文献

Young rats of both sexes, weight 150-170 g, the first laboratory progeny of captured wild parent pairs, were used throughout this experiment. Rats in two experimental groups comprising a total of 34 animals were infected orally with type 2 poliovirus vaccine strain given in each group at doses of 500, 5000 or 50,000 TCD50. In the first experiment, the presence of poliovirus in rat excrements was detectable irregularly till day 13, in the second experiment till day 2 after infection. Small quantities of virus were also detectable from the colon and cecum wall, exceptionally from the mesenteric lymph node. The third experiment included 8 rats orally infected with 5,000 TCD50 of echovirus 30; at the lower dose of virus all excrement samples were culture-negative, at the higher dose the positive virus recovery was recorded in 3 animals one day after infection. Analogous experiments in the fifth group of rats orally infected with 5,000 TCD50 or 50,000 TCD50 of enterovirus 71 yielded much the same results; organs of further 6 animals infected intranasally with 5,000 TCD50 of this virus were culture-negative and no virus-related changes could be histologically demonstrated in these animals. The second part of this study included the experiments conducted on 17 young Larus gulls bred in the laboratory from eggs collected in a colony of free living birds. Groups of these gulls were orally infected with 500 or 5,000 TCD50 of one of the following viruses: type 1 poliovirus vaccine strain, type 3 poliovirus vaccine strain, echovirus 30, enterovirus 71 and coxsackievirus B4. All samples of gull excrements collected till day 7 or 20 postinfection were culture-negative. These results suggest that wild rats may play some role in the spread of human enteroviruses in the environment, but no such role could be demonstrated in the Larus gull. 相似文献

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was measured fluorometrically in liver, kidney, intestine and brain of adult male and female ring doves. Liver MAO was inhibited in a concentration-related fashion by clorgyline and harmaline (MAO type A inhibitors) where a plateau in the inhibition curve occurred with about 15% activity remaining, and also by the type B inhibitor deprenyl, which produced a plateau when about 85% activity remained. Kidney, intestine and brain MAO were inhibited in a biphasic manner by harmaline. Results with inhibitors suggest that 85% of liver MAO, 86% of kidney MAO, 88% of intestine and 75% of brain MAO is type A. Using 10(-6) M harmaline to differentiate between MAO-A and MAO-B type activities, the apparent maximal velocities (Vmax) and Michaelis constants (Km) were determined in different tissues. Most activity occurred in the intestine, with proportionally lesser amounts of kidney, liver and brain. The majority of MAO present was in the A form. Except for kidney, Km of MAO-B was higher than that of MAO-A. Both MAO-A and -B activities were higher in the intestines of male birds, although sex differences in content and type of MAO activity were not observed in other tissues of the ring dove. 相似文献

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was measured in ring dove (Streptopelia risoria) tissues using a fluorometric assay with kynuramine as substrate. Harmaline inhibited MAO activity in a time-dependent manner, and preincubation of enzyme with the drug did not affect its activity. Pargyline produced a slow-onsetting inhibition of activity which was enhanced by preincubation of enzyme and inhibitor. Harmaline displayed reversible non-competitive inhibition of MAO activity. Oxygen is also a substrate for dove MAO, and the reaction apparently involves "ping-pong", double-displacement kinetics. Dove MAO activity is temperature-dependent, with an activation energy of 13.1 kcal/mole. 相似文献

The effect of neophobia (fear of novelty) on feeding behaviour was examined in two groups of captive wild rats fed ad libitum. Different individuals employed different feeding patterns in response to novelty despite the absence of social and ecological constraints. The prevalent feeding pattern was to delay eating from a novel bowl several nights after it was introduced and, in general, novel food was sampled towards the end of a night. Systematic relationships (prandial correlations) were revealed in the meal pattern data which were consistent with the prediction that post-prandial correlations (controlled regular feeding bouts) are more likely in predictable environments. A large proportion of the individuals exhibited no prandial relationships which correlated with high levels of neophobia supporting the hypothesis that highly neophobic individuals are less able to regulate their feeding in the presence of novelty. 相似文献

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was determined fluorometrically in brain, intestine, kidney and liver tissues of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. MAO activity was inhibited by various drugs in a concentration-related manner, with single sigmoid inhibition curves, the inhibitors of type A MAO, harmaline and clorgyline being more effective than deprenyl, an inhibitor of type B MAO. Intestine exhibited greatest MAO activity followed by liver and brain with kidney showing least activity. The Michaelis constants (Km) also showed variability between tissues. Movement of individuals promotes colonization of new areas, gene flow among local populations, and has implications for the spread of infectious agents and the control of pest species. Wild Norway rats ( Rattus norvegicus ) are common in highly urbanized areas but surprisingly little is known of their population structure. We sampled individuals from 11 locations within Baltimore, Maryland, to characterize the genetic structure and extent of gene flow between areas within the city. Clustering methods and a neighbour-joining tree based on pairwise genetic distances supported an east–west division in the inner city, and a third cluster comprised of historically more recent sites. Most individuals (~95%) were assigned to their area of capture, indicating strong site fidelity. Moreover, the axial dispersal distance of rats (62 m) fell within typical alley length. Several rats were assigned to areas 2–11.5 km away, indicating some, albeit infrequent, long-distance movement within the city. Although individual movement appears to be limited (30–150 m), locations up to 1.7 km are comprised of relatives. Moderate F ST , differentiation between identified clusters, and high allelic diversity indicate that regular gene flow, either via recruitment or migration, has prevented isolation. Therefore, ecology of commensal rodents in urban areas and life-history characteristics of Norway rats likely counteract many expected effects of isolation or founder events. An understanding of levels of connectivity of rat populations inhabiting urban areas provides information about the spatial scale at which populations of rats may spread disease, invade new areas, or be eradicated from an existing area without reinvasion. 相似文献

The behavior to foods in rats (Rattus norvegicus) was investigated in a seminatural enclosure and in a straight alley in the laboratory. In both situations, the size of food
(0.045-, 1-, and 3-g pellets were used in the enclosure and 0.045-, 0.2-, 1-, and 3-g pellets in the alley) and distance between
food sites and nest site (1.8, 3.6, 5.4, and 7.2 m in the enclosure and 2, 4, and 6 m in the alley) were varied. In both situations,
when food was presented in only 1 place, the food carrying behavior increased as the size of food increased from 0.045 to
1-g. One and three g pellets were always carried, regardless of the distance to nest. On the other hand, when multiple food
sites were presented in the alley, rats were more likely to carry small pellet from the further food site, whereas large pellet
was always carried and were not influenced by the distance. The behavior to foods in the enclosure, however, was not influenced
in either food site condition. This might be due to the difference in familiarity to the environment and anxiety from perceived
