Elephants and humans are increasingly coming into conflict because of the conversion of elephant habitat into agricultural areas. In order to identify trends that influence raiding behaviour, the nutritional makeup of food items consumed by crop‐raiding elephants over a 2‐year period were analysed and a trigger for crop raiding was identified. The point at which the quality of wild grasses declines below the quality of crop species corresponded to the movement of bull elephants out of a protected area and into fields. This finding may have wider implications for developing predictive models of elephant/human interactions. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of seasonal variation and fasting on fat reserves of the common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus. Plasma free fatty acids (FFA), along with lipid content of the liver and muscles, and fatty acids from the carcass were obtained from bats fed bovine blood and from whom food was subsequently withheld for 24 and 48 h. Animals were caught during both dry and rainy seasons. In general, fat tissue stores were not significantly influenced by seasonal variation. Lipid content of liver, muscles, and carcass decreased during some food deprivation periods, although the concomitant increase expected in plasma FFA was not observed. Lipid metabolism is hypothesized as being continued by the tissues themselves. In addition, free access to food sources (e.g., domestic livestock) throughout the year is believed to contribute to the low seasonal variations in fat reserves observed in the common vampire bat. 相似文献

During the first half of this century, the seasonal pattern of births in European countries showed a major peak in the spring and a minor peak in the autumn. In contrast, the pattern in the US was of a minor peak in spring and a major peak in autumn. Over the last 20 years, the pattern in England and Wales has changed to resemble the US pattern, and the same seems to be true of several other European countries. A hypothesis is offered to account for the difference between the European and the US patterns and for the change from one to the other in some countries. The magnitude of seasonality correlates positively with latitude: it is suggested that this is partially consequent on variation in luminosity. 相似文献

Even though growth rate is an important fitness component, it is still controversial to what extent parent birds adjust the
timing of offspring hatch to natural variations in food supply to maximize offspring growth. We studied the role of food availability
in explaining inter- and intra-seasonal variation of growth rate in goslings of greater snow geese over 5 years. The peak
of hatching generally coincided with the peak of food availability. However, early-hatched goslings usually grew faster than
birds hatched at the peak, which in␣turn grew faster than late-hatched goslings, although this phenomenon was not observed
in all years. There was considerable variation in growth rate among the five years, the smallest goslings produced in the
best year (1991) being larger than the largest goslings of the poorest year (1994). We developed three indices of food availability,
based on the cumulative availability of plant biomass and nitrogen content during the growth period, and showed that the cumulative
exposure to nitrogen biomass explained up to 43% of variation (intra- and inter-annual) in body size just before fledging.
In years with good feeding conditions, early-hatched goslings had access to more nitrogen during their growing period than
those hatching on or after the peak and they grew faster. In years of lower food availability, early-hatched goslings had
no detectable advantage over peak- or late-hatched birds for access to protein-rich food and no seasonal decline in growth
rate was observed. These results confirm the critical role of food supply in the seasonal variation of growth rate in Arctic-nesting
geese.

Abstract We have investigated the variability of the necrozoospermia in human semen, over three periods of nine months from the end of October to July, during the last three years. The donors are twenty young men in good health who have given regular specimens of sperm once of twice monthly for a period of only one or two years. Analysis of the mean curves shows a maximum during winter and a minimum in the beginning of spring, for the three years considered. 相似文献

Most of what is known about the seasonal variation in suicide rate originates from studies conducted in the northern hemisphere; very few studies have been done in the southern hemisphere. The purpose of the present study was to explore the possibility that in Brazil, the seasonal variation of suicides is a function of photoperiod. This was accomplished by analyzing monthly suicide data for a 12 yr period (1979 to 1990), within latitudes ranging from 2°N to 33°S. Single cosinor analyses with periods of 12 or 6 months were applied to time series of monthly total and suicidal deaths, separated by gender and state. Significant spring or early summer peaks of suicide were found only in the south of Brazil for both men and women, except for the latter in one state. These peaks did not coincide with those found for total deaths, which occurred in the autumn or winter in all areas. No significant six-month period was found. In the present study, the chance of a suicide was typically 10-17% higher during the peak period than during the other months of the year. Although this moderate seasonal effect might not be sufficient to justify planning large scale prophylactic interventions, those dealing with patients who have suicide ideation should be aware of this high risk time. 相似文献
