The karyotypes of water mites (Acari: Hydrachnellae: Hydrodromidae) are largely unknown. The present investigation is the first report of a study designed to characterize the chromosomes of water mites. The study was carried out with specimens of Hydrodroma despiciens collected from Eber Lake in Afyon, Turkey. Several different methods were tried to obtain chromosomes of this species. However, somatic cell culture proved to be the most effective for the preparation of chromosomes. In the present study, we determined the diploid chromosome number of Hydrodroma despiciens to be 2n = 16. However, a large metacentric chromosome was found in each metaphase, which we believed to be the X chromosome. We could not determine the sex chromosomes of this species. This study is the first approach to the cytogenetic characterization of this water mite group. Furthermore, these cytogenetic data will contribute to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationship among water mites. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the cytogenetics of water mites.  相似文献

The structure and function of Gené's organ, which secretes the egg wax, were investigated inHaemaphysalis longicornis. The hatching rates of eggs deposited before and after the prevention of the eversion of Gené's organ were compared at the conditions of 30°C, 100% RH and soaking in liquid paraffin. The movement of Gené's organ was observed, and the structures of this organ in unfed and ovipositing females were examined with both light and scanning electron microscopes. The hatching rates of eggs without contact with Gené's organ were markedly lower (4.9%) than that of normal eggs (94.5%) even at the suitable condition for eggs (30°C, 100% RH). In contrast, the hatching rates of eggs soaked in liquid paraffin without contact of Gené's organ were considerably higher (71.8%) than that of eggs without both Gené's organ contact and soaking in liquid paraffin. When oviposition commenced, the camerostome of the female was widened by a downswing of the capitulum, the paired horns of Gené's organ emerged through it, and the oviposited egg from the genital aperture was coated with egg wax. At the same time of retraction of the horns which grip an egg, the capitulum was swung up and the egg was loaded on the scutum.Gené's organ included the outer and inner cuticles, and the outer one is highly folded like bellows when the horns of this organ were retracted into the haemocoel. The undeveloped glands lying in the peripheral region of Gené's organ in the unfed stage commenced their enlargement at the time of the onset of feeding, and they became large tubular glands in the 1-day ovipositing female. The columnar glandular cells of the tubular glands extended their domed apical region into the lumen and contained numerous secretory granules during oviposition. These results suggest that the tubular glands secrete the egg wax which is indispensable for egg survival by serving as a waterproofing agent.  相似文献

Taking part of the Program for The Inventory of Flora and Fauna of Coiba Island National Park (Panama), a first list of oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatei) is presented. Materials studied come from several soil samplings, including humus and fallen leaves, done in Coiba Island in July 1998. 134 species were identified from a total amount of 1053 individuals collected. Almost all the identified species are new records for Panama as well as eigth species that represent first records for the Neotropical Region. A new name is given: Aeroppia mariehammerae n. nom. for Aeroppia sp. and a new combination is proposed: Protoribates antillensis (Mahunka, 1985) n. comb. (Xylobates).  相似文献

Climatic changes may lead to drastic changes in the distribution of arthropods important in human health. We tracked changes in habitat suitability for the tick Ixodes ricinus in Europe from 1900 to 1999, using a geographically extensive gridded climate data set. For the whole period, 52% of the territory was always unsuitable for the tick. In the grid, 6.11% of the cells were classified as having a deterministic drift with positive trend and 7.4% as deterministic drift with a negative trend. A total of 17.25% of cells were classified as exhibiting a random walk behavior, with a trend to increase of habitat suitability (9.57%) or decrease (7.68%). Zones of deterministic trend extend into most of Ireland and parts of the United Kingdom and France. Total and summer rainfall primarily drive changes in habitat suitability in these sites. Areas of random walk are common in Scandinavia, central Europe, and the Balkans, with summer rainfall and temperature largely directing the changes. Sites of reported increased abundance of I. ricinus coincided with areas of increased habitat suitability over the last 20–30 years, but this feature showed a long-term random walk negative trend. Habitat suitability for I. ricinus remains relatively stable in Europe, with no sites showing permanent changes in habitat suitability (negative to sustained positive or vice versa). However, some zones in the continent showed a clear trend to increase or decrease.  相似文献

In many groups of organisms, especially in the older literature, it has been common practice to recognize sympatrically occurring phenotypic variants of a species as “forms”. However, what these forms really represent often remains unclear, especially in poorly studied groups. With new algorithms for DNA‐based species delimitation, the status of forms can be explicitly tested with molecular data. In this study, we test a number of what is now recognized as valid species of water mites (Hydrachnidia), but have in the past been treated as forms sympatrically occurring with their nominate species. We also test a form without prior taxonomical status, using DNA and morphometrics. The barcoding fragment of COI, nuclear 28S and quantitative analyses of morphological data were used to test whether these taxa merit species status, as suggested by several taxonomists. Our results confirm valid species. Genetic distances between the form and nominate species (Piona dispersa and Piona variabilis, COI 11%), as well as likelihood ratio tests under the general mixed‐Yule coalescent model, supported that these are separately evolving lineages as defined by the unified species concept. In addition, they can be diagnosed with morphological characters. The study also reveals that some taxa genetically represent more than one species. We propose that P. dispersa are recognized as valid taxa at the species level. Unionicola minor (which may consist of several species), Piona stjordalensis, P. imminuta s. lat., and P. rotundoides are confirmed as species using this model. The results also imply that future studies of other water mite species complexes are likely to reveal many more genetically and morphologically distinct species.  相似文献

This paper concerns an approach to direct collection of eriophyoid salivary secretions, and reports preliminary results on biological assays providing evidence for the presence of plant growth promoting substances in these secretions. Eleven species belonging to the Phytoptidae, Eriophyidae and Diptilomiopidae, characterized by different host–plant interactions, were studied by immersing mites into the following oils: condensate of cedar oil, oil for immersion lenses, two kinds of olive oil, -terpineol, hystolemon, vaseline oil, and soybean oil. Some species secreted small droplets of lipophobic substances at the tip of their mouthparts when they were immersed in objective lens oil. Mite mortality and percentage of secreting specimens depended on the species and the medium used. Aceria caulobia (Nalepa) was selected as the candidate for subsequent study, because this species displayed a higher percentage of secreting mites than the other species and numerous specimens were easily collected by means of an airflow and filtering device. The induced secretions were studied from January to June of 2000, 2001 and 2002. Rapid salivary bioassays were performed during the period of maximum induced secretion in 2001. They were evaluated using a wheat-coleoptile and an excised-radish-cotyledon growth test, respectively, for indole-3-acetic acid-like and cytokinin-like activity. The bioassays suggested the presence of chemicals with plant growth regulatory effects. A brief account of eriophyoid mortality in the oils was also given.  相似文献

Sancassania polyphyllae (Acari: Acaridae) adult female mites will feed on insect cadavers and infective juveniles (IJs) of entomopathogenic nematodes. Our objective was to determine whether S. polyphyllae has a food preference when offered a choice between tissues of Polyphylla fullo (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) or Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), or IJs of Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) or IJs of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae). When offered a choice between no food and one of the different food sources, P. fullo, G. mellonella or S. feltiae IJs, S. polyphyllae had a significant preference for food sources compared to no food. When it was offered either no food or H. bacteriophora, there was no significant difference in the mite distribution. When offered two different food choices, P. fullo or G. mellonella, P. fullo or S. feltiae, and P. fullo or H. bacteriophora, the mite showed significant preferences for P. fullo larvae. In S. feltiae vs. G. mellonella and S. feltiae vs. H. bacteriophora experiments, S. polyphyllae showed significant a preference for S. feltiae. In three-choice experiments, S. polyphyllae had a preference for P. fullo, followed by S. feltiae, G. mellonella and H. bacteriophora, respectively. Our data confirm, in part, our hypothesis that when offered different food choices, this mite species prefers tissues of its phoretic host, P. fullo over lepidopteran host tissues or living IJs. Based on these laboratory data, H. bacteriophora should be used as a biological control agent against P. fullo over a Steinernema species.  相似文献

Based on allozyme electrophoresis at the Pgm locus and nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS2) sequences, we studied the genetic variation of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch collected on rose bay, Nerium oleander L. (Apocynaceae), from several localities around the Mediterranean basin. In addition, we compared these results with those of Navajas et al. (1998) and Tsagkarakou (1997) who collected from several other host plants from the Mediterranean. In the western part of this area (Spain, France, Tunisia), we found the individuals collected from rose bay to be clearly genetically differentiated from other samples. No evidence of such host-associated differentiation was detected in the eastern Mediterranean (Italy and Greece). The genetic differentiation of mites collected on rose bay was investigated further by studying the reproductive incompatibilities between populations in Greece and in France and a laboratory strain reared on bean, Phaseolus vulgaris, in France. Reciprocal crosses performed between these strains revealed variable levels of incompatibility, spanning from partial to complete reproductive isolation. In all cases incompatibility was asymmetric. We designed a test based on double-mating to establish the fertilization status of females in fully incompatible crosses. These crosses showed that the females had been inseminated, which suggests that the barrier to reproduction is not of a prezygotic behavioral nature. The data raises the question of the relative role of ecological factors (host plant) and geographical distance, in the ongoing differentiation process potentially leading to speciation.  相似文献

Predatory mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) on tree trunks without significant epiphytic growth in a subtropical rainforest in Eastern Australia were assessed for habitat specificity (i.e. whether they are tree trunk specialists or occupying other habitats) and the influence of host tree and bark structure on their abundance, species richness and species composition. The trunks of nine tree species from eight plant families representing smooth, intermediate and rough bark textures were sampled using a knockdown insecticide spray. In total, 12 species or morphospecies of Mesostigmata (excluding Uropodina sensu stricto) were collected, most of which are undescribed. Comparison with collections from other habitats indicates that epicorticolous Mesostigmata are mainly represented by suspended soil dwellers (six species), secondarily by generalists (four species) and a bark specialist (one species). A typical ground-dwelling species was also found but was represented only by a single individual. In terms of abundance, 50.5% of individuals were suspended soil dwellers, 40.7% bark specialists, and 8.3% generalists. Host species and bark roughness had no significant effect on abundance or species richness. Furthermore, there was no clear effect on species composition. The distribution of the most frequently encountered species suggests that most mesostigmatid mites living on bark use many or most rainforest tree species, independent of bark roughness. These findings support the hypothesis that some epicorticolous Mesostigmata use tree trunks as ‘highways’ for dispersing between habitat patches, while others use it as a permanent habitat.  相似文献

Whether the spider mite Tetranychus urticae uses flying insects as vectors for phoretic dispersal was experimentally tested. Two bean plants were placed in a microcosm, and a mite population was introduced onto one of the plants. Either Phaenicia cuprina Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae) or Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was then introduced into the microcosms as a hypothetical vector insect. T. urticae populations on the second bean plant were monitored to detect any evidence of phoretic dispersal. Instances of dispersal were detected at extremely low frequency, suggesting that phoretic dispersal of T. urticae mediated by winged insects is probably rare in the wild.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopical investigations revealed that Gené's organ in unfed and ovipositing females of Dermacentor reticulatus is formed as a double-sac-structure consisting of an outer epithelial and an inner cuticular sac. In ovipositing ticks the latter emerges through the camerostomal aperture to the exterior. Gené's organ in unfed ticks consists of a corpus, two posterior horns and a pair of undeveloped glands at each side, which differentiate in ovipositing ticks to compound, branched tubular glands with a main efferent duct for each gland opening into the lumen between the epithelial and the cuticular sac. Gené's organ of egg-laying females corresponds basically in morphology and structural organization to that of unfed ticks. Compared with unfed ticks, however, in ovipositing ticks the corpus and horns are longer and broader, the glands are fully developed and the cuticular sac is evertable. The epithelial sac as the outermost part of Gené's organ is continuous with the hypodermis of the basis capituli and the scutum, arises at the camerostomal aperture, forms the corpus and the two blind-ending horns, passes into the epithelium of the main excretory ducts of the glands and envelops the cuticular sac. The cuticular sac passes into the cuticle of the basis capituli and the scutum, arises at the camerostomal aperture, is folded, expands into the horn tips and consists inwards of a smooth epicuticula and outwards of a fibrous endocuticula. Muscles originating from the scutum pass caudomedially through the epithelial sac and are inserted into the cuticular sac. The entire surface of the maximally everted cuticular sac is covered with an amorphous mass. In cleaned samples, ledge-like structures appear on the lateral surface. These ledges turn into balloon-like structures which extend over the medial and dorsal surface. The entire surface including the balloon-like structures and the ledges are provided with numerous cribrate pits.  相似文献

38 halacarid species from the coasts of the boreal West Atlantic Ocean have been recorded. In a wide-spread net of stations, samples were taken from different substrata in marine and brackish waters in order to obtain information on the biology and ecology of halacarid species. Several habitats with their flora, fauna and halacarid species are described. In intertidal areas on the coasts of boreal North America fewer species were found than known from European coasts. Similar habitats on the west and east coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean are compared with respect to their halacarid population. In the rhombognathine and the genusHalacarellus, most species found in the West Atlantic Ocean are known in the East Atlantic too, living in similar habitats. The generaAnomalohalacarus andCopidognathus are common both in North American and European waters, but comparable biotopes are inhabited by different species, though often related or very similar in their appearance. 45 % of the halacarid species found in the boreal West Atlantic Ocean are also known in the East Atlantic. Hypotheses as to the dispersal and geographical distribution of halacarid genera and species are discussed. It is supposed, that many of the amphiatlantic species invaded biotopes on the American and European coasts, shortly after these continental plates drifted apart.  相似文献

Synonymy is considered as a great problem for diversity characterization and further applications, especially for biological control success with regard to the accurate identification of natural enemies. The present study focuses on two synonymy cases of natural enemies, belonging to the family Phytoseiidae, the genus Neoseiulella, specifically five species of this genus: Neoseiulella tiliarum, Neoseiulella formosa, Neoseiulella aceri, Neoseiulella squamiger, and Neoseiulella aceris. Morphological and molecular analyses [12S rRNA, cytochrome b (Cytb) mitochondrial (mt)DNA, internal transcribed spacer DNA] were applied. First, the results obtained support the synonymy of N. tiliarum and N. formosa. Second, because morphological differences (solenostomes occurrence) were observed for the first time between the type material of N. aceris and N. squamiger, the present study does not provide sufficient evidence to synomymize these two species and further analyses are required. Lastly, we assume that N. squamiger and N. aceri are synonyms. However, three groups of specimens, including N. aceri and N. squamiger, were identified by two mitochondrial DNA genes (12S rRNA and Cytb mtDNA). Therefore, the present study highlights the problems encountered when using only mitochondrial genes to diagnose species. The great mtDNA variations observed appear to reflect population differentiation (linked to plant support). This is the first time that such high intraspecific differentiation is be observed within the family Phytoseiidae. Further experiments, such as cross‐breeding and microsatellite DNA marker analyses, are planned to characterize gene flow and reproductive isolation levels within this species. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 323–344.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity of Phytoseiidae in the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo State, Brazil, and to estimate the possible role of this ecosystem as a reservoir for mites of this family. Samples were taken from 187 plant species belonging to 73 plant families in three vegetation types of the Atlantic Forest, from February 2001 to October 2002. In total, 1102 specimens of 54 species belonging to 20 genera of the three phytoseiid subfamilies were found. Most specimens (93%) and species (91%) belonged to the Amblyseiinae. The majority of species found belong to taxonomic groups largely composed of generalist predators (especially Amblyseius and Euseius). In general, the more abundant mites were found on a diversity of plant species, but a few of the abundant species were found on only a small number of plant species. Only nine of the mites encountered during this study are of known agricultural importance. The results obtained suggest the importance of the wide plant diversity in the region to sustain a wide diversity of phytoseiids. The extensive clearance of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is a threat to the diversity of these mites, important predators of mite pests.  相似文献

The predatory mite, N. longispinosus preys up on red spider mite, O. coffeae infesting tea in south India. An attempt has been made to determine the predatory potential, prey stage preference and optimum predator–prey ratio of N. longispinosus under laboratory and green house conditions. When 50 adult female O. coffeae were given, the number of adults reduced by eight days along with an increase in the number of predators. The larvae hatched from the eggs laid by O. coffeae were fed by predatory mite. N. longispinosus preyed up on all life stages with a preference to larvae and nymphs of red spider mite. Predator–prey ratios of 1:33 and 1:50 were effective in lab, and 1:25 was found to be effective in green house. These results revealed that N. longispinosus could be used as a successful biocontrol candidate of O. coffeae in tea through augmentation or mass rearing and field release.  相似文献

The tick Amblyomma dissimile Koch feeds preferentially on reptiles (Squamata), although amphibians (Anura) also seem to be important hosts. We report an A. dissimile nymph infesting a blue-winged macaw, Primolius maracana, held in captivity in the Mangal das Gar?as Park, State of Pará, Brazil. Environmental observations suggest that free-living iguanas (Iguana iguana), which used to walk on the bird enclosure in the park, were the source of the A. dissimile tick that infested the blue-winged macaw. We provide the second world record of a bird host for A. dissimile, and the first bird record for this species in South America.  相似文献

The ability of introduced organisms to invade undisturbed native habitats is a major concern in conservation biology and has resulted in a re-evaluation of the introduction of exotic biocontrol agents, especially of generalist predators. One such agent is Stratiolaelaps miles (Berlese), a predatory mite described from Italy, known from throughout the Holarctic, and apparently accidentally introduced to other areas of the world, including Australia. Initial investigations revealed that putative S. miles could be found in both disturbed and relatively pristine habitats in Queensland, Australia. However, analysis of the mitochondrial DNA of five populations showed most to be highly divergent genetically. Subsequent morphological analysis established two species groups: the lamington-group from cool-temperate to subtropical rainforests in Eastern Australia and the more eurytopic miles-group with a cosmopolitan distribution. We describe two new species from each of these complexes (Stratiolaelaps womersleyi, Stratiolaelaps lamington; Stratiolaelaps marilyn, Stratiolaelaps lorna, respectively), and resurrect Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley), a species which often appears to have been confused with S. miles. Additionally, the large genetic distances among morphologically homogenous species in the miles-group suggest that the apparently cosmopolitan S. miles may be composed of a suite of cryptic species of potentially varying utility in biological control.  相似文献
