Among wild Japanese macaques, which have clear reproductive seasonality, correspondence between fruit-food production in the mating season and birth rate in the following year was confirmed in two different habitats. One of the study areas was evergreen broad leaved forest on Yakushima Island, for which demographic and fruiting data for seven years were used. The other was a deciduous-coniferous mixed forest on Kinkazan Island in the cool temperate zone, for which 11 years of data were used. From the fruit-crop data, each year was classified as a good or bad fruiting year for each population. At both habitats, female macaques had fewer babies after bad fruiting years than after good fruiting years. In Yakushima, small troops had a lower birth rate than large troops and this tendency was clear after bad fruiting but not after good fruiting. On the other hand, in Kinkazan such differences due to troop size were not found. These findings were consistent with the observation that intertroop encounters occur more often and are more agonistic in Yakushima than in Kinkazan and large troops tend to be dominant to small troops in the Yakushima population. Thus annual fluctuations in fruit production appear to increase the difference in birth rates between troops of different sizes through intertroop competition in Yakushima, but not in Kinkazan.

Wild Japanese macaque females of the Yakushima and Kinkazan populations exhibited similar reproductive features. (1) Births/female/year (BR: 0.27–0.35) was lower than those of provisioned troops, but (2) infant mortality (IM: 0.23–0.25) was higher than those of provisioned troops. (3) The interbirth interval (IBI) following the death of infants was 1.5–1.6 years, shorter than that following surviving infants (2.2–2.4 yrs). (4) Birth sex ratio (BSR) did not differ from 1∶1. There was no consistent correlation between (5) female age and IM, (6) maternal rank and offspring BSR, or (7) maternal rank and reproductive success. On the other hand, (8) BR of Yakushima females was significantly lower than that of Kinkazan females. In particular, (9) Yakushima females stopped reproduction earlier than Kinkazan females, although (10) the first birth of Yakushima females was about one year earlier than Kinkazan females. (11) BR exhibited a humped curve against female age in Yakushima, but it was uncertain whether old-aged females of Kinkazan exhibited a post-reproductive life span (PRLS). (12) The survivorship for female juveniles was lower than that for male juveniles in Yakushima, whereas the survivorship for male juveniles was lower than that for female juveniles in Kinkazan. These data may indicate that Yakushima females more severely compete for resources than Kinkazan females, because of high population density, whereas the population density of Kinkazan might be limited by climate (e.g. heavy snow) rather than density dependent ecological effects.

Counts of 61 baboon troops (Papio cynocephalus ursinus) at four localities in the Drakensberg mountains confirmed earlier reports of a small mean troop size. This troop size of 22.49 animals changed neither with latitude nor elevation. Data from two of the sites suggested that population density increases from south to north, while a working assumption of 2.5 animals/ km2 allowed us to set the population size at 7,540 animals, living in 335 troops. Both the adult sex ratio of 2.07 females/male and the immature/ adult female ratio of 1.17 were unaffected by troop size. Repeated counts from nine known troops revealed that the population is at equilibrium.

For the wild Japanese macaques of Yakushima and Kinkazan Islands, we analyzed the relationship between the troop size or the number of adult females of each troop, infant/adult female ratio (IFR; crude birth rate), and infant mortality (IM) in habitats with no predators. In Yakushima, IFR was positively correlated to troop size and the number of adult females. In Kinkazan, however, IFR tended to decrease with the number of adult females. This difference may be due to the difference in troop size; i.e. in Yakushima, where troop size was small, IFR may increase with that of troop size, because a relatively larger troop is likely to the advantage in intertroop competition. In Kinkazan, where troop size was large, however, IFR is likely to decrease with troop size, because intratroop competition may increase. Thus, the present data roughly supportWrangham's model of the social structure of female-bonded primates, and suggests that there is an optimal troop size for birth rate (BR). On the other hand, there was no clear correlation between IM and the troop size or number of adult females of each troop.

The social organization of hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus;Colobinae) was studied in Kanha Tiger Reserve, Central Indian Highlands, for 2300 hr (1980–1985), in a mosaic of moist deciduous forest and anthropogenic meadow. The langur population density was 46.15/km 2 and the mean troop and band sizes were 21.7 and 14.0, respectively. Of 14 troops, 13 were one-male and 1 was trimale. The population adult sex ratio was 1:2.5. The majority of female sexual solicitations was directed toward the harem male. The birth season was December to May, with an estimated gestation of 171–224 days. A review of langur reproductive seasonality suggests that breeding throughout the year is confined to those populations able to exploit human food sources. Mortality during the first year of life was 40%, including infanticide. A significant positive correlation was found between the age of an infant at death or disappearance and the mother’s subsequent interbirth interval. Five cases of social change are described, including female transfer, one-male to multimale change, troop formation, and gradual and rapid replacement of troop males. Takeover-associated infant killing by band males, in an undisturbed moderate-density population, supported the sexual-selection/infanticide hypothesis but not the social-pathology hypothesis. However, it could not be directly confirmed that an invading infanticidal male gains a reproductive advantage. The male tenure of harems was estimated to be 45 months.

The influences of socionomic sex ratio (SSR; adult males/adult female) and troop size upon male-male, female-female, and male-female grooming relationships were examined and compared between two wild Japanese macaque troops (Kinkazan A and Yakushima M troops) in Japan. The Yakushima M troop was smaller and had a higher-SSR than the Kinkazan A troop. Between the troops, (1) the male-male grooming frequency and number of partners were greater in the Yakushima M troop than in the Kinkazan A troop; (2) the female-female grooming frequency and number of partners were not different; and (3) the male-female grooming frequency and number of partners were not different. Based on these features, the patterns of female-female and male-female grooming relationships appear to be independent of SSR and troop size variations. In contrast, male-male grooming relationships are influenced by both factors, especially SSR. Frequent grooming interactions among males may be useful for the continued coexistence of relatively many males especially in a higher-SSR troop.

Aim Spatial turnover of species, or beta diversity, varies in relation to geographical distance and environmental conditions, as well as spatial scale. We evaluated the explanatory power of distance, climate and topography on beta diversity of mammalian faunas of North America in relation to latitude. Location North America north of Mexico. Methods The study area was divided into 313 equal‐area quadrats (241 × 241 km). Faunal data for all continental mammals were compiled for these quadrats, which were divided among five latitudinal zones. These zones were comparable in terms of latitudinal and longitudinal span, climatic gradients and elevational gradients. We used the natural logarithm of the Jaccard index (lnJ) to measure species turnover between pairs of quadrats within each latitudinal zone. The slope of lnJ in relation to distance was compared among latitudinal zones. We used partial regression to partition the variance in lnJ into the components uniquely explained by distance and by environmental differences, as well as jointly by distance and environmental differences. Results Mammalian faunas of North America differ more from each other at lower latitudes than at higher latitudes. Regression models of lnJ in relation to distance, climatic difference and topographic difference for each zone demonstrated that these variables have high explanatory power that diminishes with latitude. Beta diversity is higher for zones with higher mean annual temperature, lower seasonality of temperature and greater topographic complexity. For each latitudinal zone, distance and environmental differences explain a greater proportion of the variance in lnJ than distance, climate or topography does separately. Main conclusions The latitudinal gradient in beta diversity of North American mammals corresponds to a macroclimatic gradient of decreasing mean annual temperature and increasing seasonality of temperature from south to north. Most of the variance in spatial turnover is explained by distance and environmental differences jointly rather than distance, climate or topography separately. The high predictive power of geographical distance, climatic conditions and topography on spatial turnover could result from the direct effects of physical limiting factors or from ecological and evolutionary processes that are also influenced by the geographical template.

In a study of almost 16 000 nest records from seven swallow species across the entire Western Hemisphere, clutch sizes decline with relative laying date in each population, but the slope of this decline grows steeper with increasing distance from the equator. Late‐laying birds at all latitudes lay clutches of similar sizes, suggesting that latitudinal differences may be driven primarily by earlier‐laying birds. Focused comparisons of site‐years in North America with qualitatively different food availability indicate that food supply significantly affects mean clutch size but not the clutch size–lay date regression. Other studies on the seasonality of swallow food also indicate that steeper clutch size–lay date declines in the North are not caused by steeper earlier food peaks there. The distribution of lay dates grows increasingly right‐skewed with increasing latitude. This variation in lay‐date distributions could be due to the predominance of higher quality, early‐laying (and large‐clutched) individuals among populations at higher latitudes, resulting from latitudinal variation in mortality rates and the intensity of sexual selection. Our results underscore the importance of studying clutch size and lay date in tandem and suggest new research into the causes of their joint geographic variation.

This paper compares male life history parameters of two populations of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata Blyth, 1875), studied without provisioning: Yakushima (M. f. yakui), a subtropical forest habitat in southwestern Japan, and Kinkazan (M. f. fuscata), a temperate, deciduous forest habitat in northeastern Japan. The males of the two sites experienced similar life histories with respect to several traits. Age at natal dispersal was at about 5 years. Average troop residence was about three years. Most males joined troops at the bottom of the rank order, although a few males joined troops at the top rank. Dominance ranks of males tended to rise with the death or departure of higher ranking males. Visiting males accounted for about 41% of observed mating at both sites. However, the two sites differed in the sex ratio of troops, partly because a larger proportion of males apparently lived outside of troops in the Kinkazan site compared to Yakushima. In particular, non-natal young males were absent from the main study troop at Kinkazan. Large within-species variation may exist in the degree to which males associate with troops.

Birth seasonality in wild neotropical primates has been suggested to increase with latitude as a response to a stronger divergence in high-quality food availability across the year, and a higher between-year predictability at higher latitudes related to temporal differences in photoperiod. In captivity, however, monkeys are fed foods of similar quality throughout the year, and this consistency of diet should have a releasing effect on the need for birth seasonality. In this paper, we test whether 1) brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) breed seasonally in captivity, and 2) given the consistency of diet in this setting, differences in latitude are reflected in the temporal pattern of birth distribution across the year. Data on the distribution of birth records of C. apella at Brazilian zoos located within three latitudinal zones (Equator perpendicular 8 degrees S, 16 degrees perpendicular 24 degrees S, and 24 degrees perpendicular 32 degrees S) are compared. Captive C. apella showed a birth peak from October to February, despite the consistent provision of food in this setting. In addition, there were no differences in the pattern of birth distribution among the latitudinal zones, which lends no support to the prediction that captive C. apella birth seasonality would increase with latitude. We suggest that if this species is not sensitive to subtle differences in photoperiod, other environmental cues may trigger the onset of reproduction at lower latitudes.

Birth data of 25 troops of Japanese monkeys, which range over major areas in Japan between lat. 31°22 N. and 41°15 N., show significant differences in the timing of the birth season among different troops. The difference seems regional to some extent. Correlations between the timing of the birth season of the troop and various environmental factors—latitude, rainfall, temperature, social factors and so on, were examined, and it was suggested that the effect of environmental factors are complex and not always direct, and that the threshold value of each factor in causing the onset of the copulatory season might vary by troops. The difference in the timing of the birth season among different troops has not yet been sufficiently explained by a simple correlation with environmental conditions. While troops with large numbers of birth show annual uniform monthly distribution patterns of births, those with a smaller number of births show more fluctuations in the monthly distribution pattern of births from year to year. However, all the births in the latter come within a range of about four months, which is fixed for each troop.

The movement patterns of two chacma baboon troops in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa were studied over an 18-month period. One of these troops (HIGH) lived on the escarpment slopes (1920–2980 m), while the other (LOW) lived primarily in the montane belt (1560–2000 m). In this paper we analyze the effects of environmental variables on day journeys and home range use. We found the troops to be similar in the temporal patterning of their daily movement, in the resistance of travel speed to variations in local climatic conditions, and in their response to the nutritional bottleneck at the end of the austral winter. While both troops traveled farther as food became scarcer, HIGH troop undertook longer day journeys than LOW troop. This was probably due to the interactive effects of absolutely lower food availability and lower ambient temperatures. HIGH troop traveled farther when food was scarcer and when minimum temperatures were higher. Neither variable accounted for variance in the day journeys of LOW troop. Both troops used some areas of their home ranges preferentially. For LOW troop this preference followed the spatial distribution of food. While the same was generally true for HIGH troop, its home range use was complicated by the adverse temperatures of winter and spring. It abandoned the higher, more productive part of its range once temperatures became severe, returning only after minimum ground temperatures had risen above 0°C. These usage patterns differ from those described for eastern African baboon populations and reflect both the severity and sesonality of climate and the poor quality and extreme dispersion of food that characterize these southern mountains.

We use data on feral goats on the Isle of Rum to explore the hypothesis that time is a major constraint on the latitudinal and altitudinal distribution of this species. Daylength and temperature were the principal factors influencing the main time budget elements (feeding, moving and resting). Because the goats do not feed at night due to low ambient temperatures, they faced particular problems during winter when daylengths were at their shortest. A mean monthly windchill‐adjusted temperature of 5°C appeared to be a critical threshold in terms of the animals’ ability to survive on Rum. We used these data to model the animals’ time budgets at different latitudes and altitudes. We show that winter daylength would be shorter than the required feeding time north of about 60° latitude, with a narrowing altitudinal cone approaching sea level at this latitude. Biogeographic evidence confirms that feral goat populations are not self‐sustaining north of this latitude.

It is widely believed that insect herbivory is less intense at higher latitudes, due to winter mortality which would tend to keep insect herbivores from reaching density-limitation of their populations. One prediction of this theory is that plants should tend to be better defended at lower latitudes. Here we investigated latitudinal trends in herbivory and tannins, in four species of common North American trees. Our comparisons spanned 15° of latitude in Acer rubrum, Fagus grandifolia, and Quercus alba, and 10° latitude in Liquidambar styraciflua. Sun leaves on forest edges were sampled, at phenologically equivalent times of year. Analysis revealed significant differences between populations, including those at similar latitudes, but no significant latitudinal trend in herbivory, condensed and hydrolyzable tannins, or total phenolics measured as Folin–Denis reactives in any of the four species. Our findings contradict the theory that low latitude plants are better defended, in that lower latitude populations of the four tree species showed no greater amounts of phenolics. The possible implications for community ecology are discussed. Jonathan M. Adams, Brian Rehill, and Yangjian Zhang are equal joint lead authorship on this paper.

Aim Elevation and climate ranges across latitude experienced by 21 wide‐ranging mammal species in western North America were summarized to examine two questions: (1) do populations in the northern and southern portions of a species’ range experience different climates or are environments selected to remain similar to climates at the core of ranges; and (2) how do species’ elevational ranges, experienced temperature seasonality and temperature ranges change across latitude? Given the larger effects of climate oscillations in the north vs. the south, a predicted outcome is for species to conserve climate niches across latitude and to show reduced climate and elevation ranges in the north. An alternative outcome is latitudinal niche diversification and increased climate variation in the north. Location Western North America. Methods The questions above were examined using a combination of species occurrence data bases, climate data bases, simple summaries of means and standard deviations and by testing summaries against random distributions across latitude for 21 mammal species from a variety of orders. Results The results showed that: (i) most species conserve their niche strongly or weakly given overall temperature gradients from north to south; (ii) seasonality experienced by species is relatively static until the highest latitudes despite directional trends across the region; and (iii) the elevation range and temperature variation that species experience decreases from south to north. Main conclusions Populations at range edges appear to partition environments to remain closer to temperature values similar to those at the core of the range. In addition, seasonality is not a likely explanatory factor of genetic diversity in latitudinal gradients. The data are instead more consistent with predictions that a combination of higher gene‐flow, increasing environmental instability and decreasing elevation gradients in the north compared to the south may lead to negative correlations between latitude and species’ climate variation. The results corroborate risks faced by northern mammal populations to global climate changes.

Seasonality and the scheduling of life history at different latitudes
For many ectotherms, the annual cycle is partitioned into 'growing' (summer) and 'non-growing' (winter) seasons, and the lengths of these seasons are inversely related across a latitudinal gradient. This pattern of variation has the potential to affect diverse life-history traits profoundly. A key selective agent is size-dependent winter mortality which, with increasing latitude, places an increasing premium on attainment of large body size before the first winter of life. Winter body size is determined primarily by two factors: (1) birth date, which defines the beginning of the first growing season and (2) somatic growth rate within the first season. Using examples drawn from the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia (L.), and other fishes, I show how latitudinal variation in the scheduling of the spawning season, countergradient variation in the capacity for growth and reproduction, and mode of sex determination (environmental v. genetic) represent adaptations to seasonality.

Mortality of human populations in Chile was studied from a latitudinal and seasonal perspective, and related to climate and main diseases. Approximately 3 mill. deaths were analyzed. Seasonality considered along a latitudinal and climatic gradient is almost absent in the northern portion of the country, in the central part peaks are evident in summer, at latitudes 40°S in winter and at 45°S in winter and spring. Seasonality along the years of analysis shows a different behaviour for the different zones of the country and no unique pattern is evident. A clear relationship between the air enthalpy and seasonality of mortality is detected. Circulatory diseases appear as the most important causes of deaths, exception made of latitude 40 where respiratory diseases are the significant causes of deaths. Age groups below one and above 65 years are mostly affected.

The city of Jodhpur (26°18′N, 73°8′E) supports a population of about 900 hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus) divided into 24 bisexual troops and 12 all-male bands in an area of 60 km2. This population has been censused from 1968 to 1978. Over this period the population of bisexual troops has remained stable around 700, while the population of all-male bands has increased from 160 to 230 individuals. The bisexual troops show a tendency towards a reduction in population growth rate with increasing troop size, with troops over 50–60 tending to split. Very small troops may grow by large scale immigration. Although a number of male changes and mortality through infanticide have been recorded, there is no evidence of a regular periodicity in the occurrence of initial, growth and mature phases in the life history of a bisexual troop. Unlike the bisexual troops, the all-male bands show no tendency towards a reduction in growth rate with the increase in band size, but show a continuous growth of band size over the study period. Langurs of Jodhpur rely heavily on cultivated fields for their sustenance. This cultivation has been on increase over the study period, and since the males invade cultivation more readily, they may have been able to take fuller advantage of these increasing resources and affect a population increase that has not been possible for the bisexual troops.

A census of wild Yakushima macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) was carried out in a 23-km2 area of the western coast of Yakushima Island, Japan. We analyzed the census data to investigate changes in monkey distribution associated with the vertical distribution of vegetation. In the lowland coastal zone of 0–300 m above sea level (a.s.l.), 4.8 troops and 62.4–99.8 monkeys are estimated to have existed per km2. In the mountainside zones of 300–900 m a.s.l., the troop density decreased to 1.3–1.6 troops/km2. Since there was no difference in size between the coastal and mountainside troops, population density should decrease with altitude to about 30–36 monkeys per km2. On the other hand, 2.4 troops and about 36 monkeys were estimated to have inhabited per km2 in the mountain summit zone of 900–1,323 m a.s.l.
