The effect of pregnancy on peak O2 uptake (VO2 peak) during tethered swimming was evaluated in 10 women during their 25th and 35th wk of pregnancy, as well as 9-11 wk postpartum. The swim results were compared with cycle ergometry results obtained at similar times. The results indicated that exercise-induced maximal heart rates remained the same and were similar for the swim and cycle trials, approximately 184 +/- 4 beats/min. Cycling VO2 peak was not affected by pregnancy, averaging 1.94 +/- 0.11 l/min. Postpartum swim VO2 peak was similar to the cycle results; however, during pregnancy it was significantly lower than cycling VO2 peak (P less than 0.05; postpartum, 1.78 +/- 0.14 l/min; 25th wk, 1.64 +/- 0.12; 35th wk, 1.48 +/- 0.11). Hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrits were lower during pregnancy; however, changes in plasma volume (based on hematocrit and hemoglobin) were found to be significantly greater during cycling than during swimming and also greater during pregnancy for both modes of exercise. It was concluded that, unlike cycling, the VO2 peak of pregnant women during swimming is reduced. This reduction in VO2 peak was associated with a decreased peak ventilation (r = 0.864) but was not correlated to exercise-induced hemoconcentration (r = -0.29). Furthermore, pregnancy results in a greater-than-normal exercise-induced hemoconcentration, which may be related to pregnancy-induced changes in capillary dynamics. 相似文献

The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of running training on adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) response in rats to swimming or cage-switch stress to determine whether, after physical training, a cross-adaptation develops in the ACTH responses induced by different types of stresses. Rats were trained by two different kinds of exercises and for two different periods of training: 1) swimming for 4 wk (4W-swimming), 2) running for 4 wk (4W-running), and 3) running for 10 wk (10W-running). Remaining rats were used for control for 4 wk (4W-control) and 10 wk (10W-control). The ACTH response induced by swimming stress was reduced after training by swimming (62.4%) or by running (13.8-16.4%). These training periods also attenuated the ACTH response induced by cage-switch stress (62.4% in the swimming group, 23.8-34.6% in the running groups). After swimming stress, the 4W-swimming and 10W-running groups showed smaller increases in blood glucose than the control groups. In addition, the increased levels of blood lactate in all the trained rats were significantly smaller than those in the control groups, suggesting that an adaptation was achieved after physical training. These results suggest that after running training, cross-adaptation is developed in the ACTH response induced by different types of physical (swimming) or psychological (cage-switch) stresses. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the pacing strategy of experienced cyclists in a 5-minute maximal exercise bout and to describe selected physiological responses associated with this effort. Six experienced and well-trained competitive cyclists (five males, one female) with a mean (+/-SD) age, height, and mass of 27.0 +/- 4.77 years, 174.7 +/- 8.57 cm, and 71.0 +/- 6.45 kg, performed a 5-minute maximal exercise bout in a laboratory on a racing cycle. Subjects were free to determine their work rate throughout. During exercise, data were collected for work rate, heart rate (HR), [latin capital V with dot above]O2, electromyography of the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis, oxygen saturation, and rating of perceived exertion. All six subjects selected a pacing strategy characterized by a surge in work rate in the first minute followed by a gradual decline until the last minute, when a sprint to the end occurred. Values for HR, respiratory exchange ratio, and blood lactate concentration (182.8 +/- 2.8 bpm, 1.08 +/- 0.07, and 15.5 +/- 2.1 mmol x L-1, respectively) indicated that [latin capital V with dot above]O2 (3.6 +/- 0.4 L x min-1) was close to or at maximum from minutes 2 to 5. Oxygen saturation dropped continuously across time, reaching <94% in the last minute, and rating of perceived exertion was 19.5 +/- 0.8. Electromyographic activity of the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis was not significantly related to work rate during the bout (p > 0.05). It is concluded that work rate or pace is uneven in an all-out, 5-minute exercise bout in experienced cyclists, yet the physiological responses are near maximal in minutes 2-5. Cyclists seem to pace themselves in a common pattern in short-term stochastic exercise bouts. The possible benefits of including some stochastic exercise in the training programs of athletes might be worthy of examination. 相似文献

Previous studies suggest that prostaglandins may contribute to exercise-induced increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). To test this hypothesis, MSNA was measured at rest and during exercise before and after oral administration of ketoprofen, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, or placebo. Twenty-one subjects completed two bouts of graded dynamic and isometric handgrip to fatigue. Each exercise bout was followed by 2 min of postexercise muscle ischemia. The second exercise bouts were performed after 60 min of rest in which 11 subjects were given ketoprofen (300 mg) and 10 subjects received a placebo. Ketoprofen significantly lowered plasma thromboxane B(2) in the drug group (from 36 +/- 6 to 22 +/- 3 pg/ml, P < 0.04), whereas thromboxane B(2) in the placebo group increased from 40 +/- 5 to 61 +/- 9 pg/ml from trial 1 to trial 2 (P < 0.008). Ketoprofen and placebo did not change sympathetic and cardiovascular responses to dynamic handgrip, isometric handgrip, and postexercise muscle ischemia. There was no relationship between thromboxane B(2) concentrations and MSNA or arterial pressure responses during both exercise modes. The data indicate that physiological increases or decreases in prostaglandins do not alter exercise-induced increases in MSNA and arterial pressure in humans. These findings suggest that contraction-induced metabolites other than prostaglandins mediate MSNA responses to exercise in humans. 相似文献

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) technology (“Airwave”) has led to public concern because of its potential interference with electrical activity in the brain. The present study is the first to examine whether acute exposure to a TETRA base station signal has an impact on cognitive functioning and physiological responses. Participants were exposed to a 420 MHz TETRA signal at a power flux density of 10 mW/m2 as well as sham (no signal) under double‐blind conditions. Fifty‐one people who reported a perceived sensitivity to electromagnetic fields as well as 132 controls participated in a double‐blind provocation study. Forty‐eight sensitive and 132 control participants completed all three sessions. Measures of short‐term memory, working memory, and attention were administered while physiological responses (blood volume pulse, heart rate, skin conductance) were monitored. After applying exclusion criteria based on task performance for each aforementioned cognitive measure, data were analyzed for 36, 43, and 48 sensitive participants for these respective tasks and, likewise, 107,125, and 129 controls. We observed no differences in cognitive performance between sham and TETRA exposure in either group; physiological response also did not differ between the exposure conditions. These findings are similar to previous double‐blind studies with other mobile phone signals (900–2100 MHz), which could not establish any clear evidence that mobile phone signals affect health or cognitive function. The effects of a short-term strength training programme on resting lymphocyte subsets and stress hormone concentrations were analysed in 32 elderly sedentary subjects. Out of these 32 subjects, 8 women and 8 men [mean age 70.1 (SEM 1.0) years] were randomly assigned to a 8-week strength training programme which consisted of three sets of eight repetitions at 80% of one repetition maximum, for leg press, bilateral leg extension and seated chest press, 3 days a week. The remaining 8 women and 8 men [mean age 70.5 (SEM 0.9) years] served as controls. Absolute counts of lymphocyte subsets (CD20+, CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD3-CD56+CD16+) were measured with a new technique combining fluorescent microspheres and flow cytometry. In the trained subjects, substantial increases in strength took place in one repetition maximum during the 8-week training period for leg press [from means of 20.7 (SEM 1.0) to 23.6 (SEM 1.0) N x kg(-1) LBM (lean body mass)], chest press [from means of 5.4 (SEM 0.3) to 6.2 (SEM 0.3) N x kg(-1) LBM] and bilateral leg extension [from means of 6.3 (SEM 0.2) to 7.4 (SEM 0.3) N x kg(-1) LBM] movements. Baseline cortisol concentration (P < 0.01), CD20+ cell count (P < 0.05), CD3+ cell count (P < 0.05), and CD4+ cell count (P < 0.01) decreased in both groups secondary to circannual variations between winter and summer. No significant effect of strength training on resting adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol concentrations or distributions of lymphocyte subsets at rest was observed. The main finding of this study was to demonstrate that 8-week is too short a duration for a strength training programme to modify counts of lymphocyte subsets at rest in elderly sedentary adults. 相似文献

We conducted a series of studies to develop and test a rapid, noninvasive method to measure limb venous compliance in humans. First, we measured forearm volume (mercury-in-Silastic strain gauges) and antecubital intravenous pressure during inflation of a venous collecting cuff around the upper arm. Intravenous pressure fit the regression line, -0.3 +/- 0.7 + 0.95 +/- 0.02. cuff pressure (r = 0.99 +/- 0.00), indicating cuff pressure is a good index of intravenous pressure. In subsequent studies, we measured forearm and calf venous compliance by inflating the venous collecting cuff to 60 mmHg for 4 min, then decreasing cuff pressure at 1 mmHg/s (over 1 min) to 0 mmHg, using cuff pressure as an estimate of venous pressure. This method produced pressure-volume curves fitting the quadratic regression (Deltalimb volume) = beta(0) + beta(1). (cuff pressure) + beta(2). (cuff pressure)(2), where Delta is change. Curves generated with this method were reproducible from day to day (coefficient of variation: 4.9%). In 11 subjects we measured venous compliance via this method under two conditions: with and without (in random order) superimposed sympathetic activation (ischemic handgrip exercise to fatigue followed by postexercise ischemia). Calf and forearm compliance did not differ between control and sympathetic activation (P > 0.05); however, the data suggest that unstressed volume was reduced by the maneuver. These studies demonstrate that venous pressure-volume curves can be generated both rapidly and noninvasively with this technique. Furthermore, the results suggest that although whole-limb venous compliance is under negligible sympathetic control in humans, unstressed volume can be affected by the sympathetic nervous system. 相似文献

The effects of training resulting from one-leg exercise on a stationary bicycle ergometer have been studied. Seven subjects were habituated to one- and two-leg progressive exercise tests on 11 successive days and were then trained for 60 min-day-1 (30 min each leg) 3 times per wk for 5-6 wk at approximately 80% of their one-leg VO2 max. VE max increased (P less than 0.05) by approximately 14 1-min-1 and VO2 max by approximately 0.34 1-min-1 (+14%; P less than 0.05) in one-leg exercise. This latter increase was not, however, reflected in the two-leg VO2 max which only increased 145 ml-min-1 (4.7%). It was concluded that training is specific and in one-leg work the phenomenon is mainly peripheral in origin, but in two-leg work the limitation to maximal exercise is still provided by the capacity of the central cardiovascular system to transport oxygen to a given effective muscle mass. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of individualized training (IT) as a function of motor type and effort status on changes of in specific physiological parameters among young soccer competitors. Blood pH and lactate concentrations, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine kinase (CK) activities were measured at the beginning of a preparation period, a match season, and a recuperation period of a 6-month macrocycle. The differences among specific physiological parameters as a function of the preparation phase for a defined motor type were analyzed by means of a 1-way generalized linear model (GLM) for repeated measurements. The differences in physiological parameters among defined motor types for a defined preparation phase were analyzed by means of the GLM for independent data. The differences in specific parameters before and after short time effort were analyzed by means of a t-test for matched pairs. Applied experimental and analytical approaches have revealed that IT administered to specific motor types differentiates players with respect to the pH, lactate concentration, and LDH activity. Obtained results indicate also that the dynamics of these parameters reflects the player's fitness level. Analysis of CK activity as a function of a preparation phase may serve as a prognostic tool for both overtraining and physical exhaustion. 相似文献

Human subjects participated in a training/detraining paradigm which consisted of 7 wk of intense endurance training followed by 3 wk of inactivity. In previously sedentary subjects, training produced a 23.9 +/- 7.2% increase in maximal aerobic power (V02max) (group S). Detraining did not affect group S V02max. In previously trained subjects (group T), the training/detraining paradigm did not affect V02max. In group S, training produced an increase in vastus lateralis muscle citrate synthase (CS) activities (nmol.mg protein-1. min-1) from 67.1 +/- 14.5 to 106.9 +/- 22.0. Detraining produced a decrease in CS activity to 80 +/- 14.6. In group T, pretraining CS activity (139.5 +/- 14.9) did not change in response to training. Detraining, however, produced a decrease in CS activity (121.5 +/- 7.8 to 66.8 +/- 5.9). Group S respiratory exchange ratios obtained during submaximal exercise at 60% V02max (R60) decreased in response to training (1.00 +/- 0.02 to 0.87 +/- 0.02) and increased (0.96 +/- 0.02) after detraining. Group T R60 (0.91 +/- 0.01) was not affected by training but increased (0.89 +/- 0.02 to 0.95 +/- 0.02) after detraining. R60 was correlated to changes in CS activity but was unrelated to changes in V02max. These data support the hypothesis that the mitochondrial content of working skeletal muscle is an important determinant of substrate utilization during submaximal exercise. 相似文献

Background
Regular exercise reduces cardiovascular and metabolic disease partly through improved aerobic fitness. The determinants of exercise-induced gains in aerobic fitness in humans are not known. We have demonstrated that over 500 genes are activated in response to endurance-exercise training, including modulation of muscle extracellular matrix (ECM) genes. Real-time quantitative PCR, which is essential for the characterization of lower abundance genes, was used to examine 15 ECM genes potentially relevant for endurance-exercise adaptation. Twenty-four sedentary male subjects undertook six weeks of high-intensity aerobic cycle training with muscle biopsies being obtained both before and 24 h after training. Subjects were ranked based on improvement in aerobic fitness, and two cohorts were formed (n = 8 per group): the high-responder group (HRG; peak rate of oxygen consumption increased by +0.71 ± 0.1 L min-1; p < 0.0001) while the low-responder group (LRG; peak rate of oxygen consumption did not change, +0.17 ± 0.1 L min-1, ns). ECM genes profiled included the angiopoietin 1 and related genes (angiopoietin 2, tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin-like and EGF-like domains 1 (TIE1) and 2 (TIE2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and related receptors (VEGF receptor 1, VEGF receptor 2 and neuropilin-1), thrombospondin-4, α2-macroglobulin and transforming growth factor β2. 相似文献15.

This study was undertaken to determine whether the resisted-sprint in overstrength (OSt) or the assisted-sprint in overspeed (OSp) could be efficient training methods to increase 100-m front crawl performance. Thirty-seven (16 men, 21 women) competition-level swimmers (mean +/- SD: age 17.5 +/- 3.5 years, height 173 +/- 14 cm, weight 63 +/- 14 kg) were randomly divided into 3 groups: OSt, OSp, and control (C). All swimmers trained 6 days per week for 3 weeks, including 3 resisted or assisted training sessions per week for the groups OSt and OSp respectively. Elastic tubes were used to generate swimming overstrength and overspeed. Three 100-m events were performed before, during, and after the training period. Before each 100-m event, strength of the elbow flexors and extensors was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer. Stroke rate and stroke length were evaluated using the video-recorded 100-m events. In the OSt group, elbow extensor strength, swimming velocity, and stroke rate significantly increased (p < 0.05), while stroke length remained unchanged after the 3-week training period. In the OSp group, stroke rate significantly increased (p < 0.05) and stroke length significantly decreased (p < 0.05) without changes in swimming velocity. No significant variations in the C group were observed. Both OSt and OSp proved to be more efficient than the traditional training program. However, the OSt training program had a larger impact on muscle strength, swimming performance, and stroke technique than the OSp program. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the cardiovascular and metabolic effects of a 5 wk arm crank (AC) training program on submaximal wheelchair (WC) ergometry in able-bodied women. The 6 subjects in the training group (TG) and 4 in the control group (CG) performed a 10 min WC exercise prior to and following the training period at a power output (PO) that elicited 70% of the pre-training peak oxygen uptake (VO2). Steady state VO2, heart rate (HR), cardiac output (Qc) and stroke volume (Vs) were measured. Resting and post-exercise blood lactate concentrations (LA) were measured, the difference was recorded as net LA. The TG exercised on the AC 3 d.wk-1 at a PO that elicited 85% of each subject's recorded peak HR. Each session consisted of four 4 min exercise bouts preceded by a 2 min warm-up and interspersed with 2 min rest periods. After training, the TG had a significantly (p less than 0.05) lower HR, larger Vs and lower LA in response to the WC exercise. Qc and VO2 were not significantly altered. The results demonstrate that the AC exercise program used in this study produced a physiological training effect which was observed during submaximal WC exercise of an intensity frequently encountered during daily WC ambulation. It appears that short-term, moderate intensity AC training offers an adequate stimulus to reduce the stress imposed by wheelchair locomotion. 相似文献

Hemodynamic and hormonal responses were studied during swimming (SW) and running (R) and in cage-confined (C) female Wistar rats at base line and 4 and 8 wk of training. Myocardial tissue levels of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI) were also measured at the end of 8 wk of training. Mean arterial blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and blood samples for arterial lactate, plasma NE and EPI, and blood gases were obtained at rest and at 20, 40, and 60 min of exercise. After 4 wk of SW, a resting bradycardia was observed, and HR response for the remaining 4 wk was attenuated with SW compared with HR during R. BP and blood gases remained unchanged between the two groups. R resulted in increased arterial lactate concentrations compared with C and SW at base line but was not different from SW at 4 wk. SW elicited higher plasma levels of NE and EPI compared with C at base line and C and R at 4 wk. Myocardial tissue NE and EPI concentrations were markedly increased in both the left and right ventricle of the SW group compared with both R and C. These results indicate that BP and blood gases are not different between chronic R and SW and suggest a possible sympathoadrenal role in the differences observed in cardiac adaptations between R and SW. 相似文献

The behavioural, physiological and immunological responses of lambs from two rearing systems and two genotypes to exposure to humans was assessed during and immediately after testing in an open-field arena. Ninety-six lambs of two genotypes (Scottish Blackface: BF and Texelx(Blue-faced LeicesterxScottish Blackface): T) were used. From birth to weaning one of two management regimes was applied: extensive (E), whereby animals were handled as little as possible or semi-intensive (I), in which lambs experienced a greater level of human exposure. Eight lambs from each of the four treatment groups received an antigenic challenge (Mycobacterium a. paratuberculosis) at 9 weeks of age to allow subsequent testing of immunological reactivity. At 1 and 3 weeks after weaning and 1 year later, lambs were tested in groups of four in a 4.5x4.5 m indoor arena, marked with gridlines at 0.75 m intervals. There were a number of occasions where testing revealed significant effects of genotype, management or their interaction, but in an approximately equal number of instances no significant effects of either genotype or management were observed. Genotype significantly influenced the number of squares occupied in the test arena over a 10-min period before the human entered (100.4 vs. 110.5; sed 2.70 for BF and T lambs, respectively, p<0.001). In relation to the number of new squares entered, there was a genotypexmanagement interaction: BFE lambs entered fewer squares than TE lambs but following semi-intensive management (I) BF lambs entered more squares than T lambs (p<0.05). When a human entered the arena after this 10-min period, while there was a gradual reduction in the number of animals which had not moved over the next 5 min, 66 animals had not moved within the allocated time. Also during this period, BF lambs stood facing the human for significantly longer than T lambs (p<0.05). At the time of arena testing, 12 lambs from each treatment group were fitted with heart-rate monitoring equipment. There were significant differences in heart rate in relation to period of testing, i.e. before (107.9) or after (112.3) the point at which the human entered the arena or when the lambs were walking in the presence of a moving human (126.3 b.p.m.; sed 2.15, p<0.001). When lambs were alone in the test arena, BF lambs had higher heart rates than T lambs (p<0.05). The heart rate of E lambs increased more than that of I lambs when the human entered the pen (9.4 vs. 0.3 b.p.m.; sed 3.95, respectively; p=0.05). Immediately following completion of the behavioural tests, blood samples were collected from subsets of lambs. Plasma cortisol concentrations of BF lambs were greater than those of T lambs (82.0 vs. 53.5 nmol/l; sed 10.18, p<0.01) but there was no effect of management. Blood samples collected from the lambs challenged with a novel antigen prior to weaning showed a genotype but not a management effect on both antibody and cell mediated immune responses, although there was a genotypexmanagement interaction. However, it should also be noted that there were no significant effects of either genotype or management on a number of the indices recorded: latency of lambs to move from the initial entry position in the absence or subsequent presence of a human; length of time one individual was separated from the other three; distance moved in a raceway before stopping; plasma beta-endorphin concentrations; heart rate in the presence of a human. Overall, these results suggest that although differences in responsiveness associated with specific genotypes of sheep can be detected in a test situation, the early life management regime may also have an effect. The results of this study caution against drawing conclusions between studies where different genotypes are employed. 相似文献

The behavioural and physiological responses of the synovigenic parasitoid, Dinarmus basalis (Rond.) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), were investigated whilst the wasps were submitted to conflicting oviposition stimuli: an environment which induced them to restrict egg-laying and a physiological factor, egg-load pressure, which induced them to lay eggs. When individual females depleted patches containing hosts parasitized 24 h or 72 h beforehand, they laid preferentially on unparasitized hosts and the number of eggs laid decreased significantly. Although they remained for several days in such patches, egg-load pressure did not lead them to modify their strategy (i.e. to accept all the available hosts including the already parasitized ones). In this synovigenic species, the oviposition constraint resulted in the retention of oocytes. Dissection and histological observation showed that the unlaid eggs are resorbed, a reproductive regulatory process which has seldom previously been reported in the presence of unparasitized hosts. This physiological response was induced by the mere presence of the parasitized hosts rather than their density. The females’ response was also influenced by the presence of conspecifics. They still avoided laying on parasitized hosts but the number of eggs laid daily became comparable to that observed in patches containing only unparasitized hosts. Thus, D. basalis females adapted their strategy in response to their environment, in which the most significant factor seemed to be the quality of the hosts provided, and their physiology. The originality and the importance of these results are discussed. 相似文献
