Concerns about future fossil fuel supplies and the environmental effects of their consumption have prompted the search for alternative sources of liquid fuels, specifically biofuels. However, it is important that the sources of such biofuel have minimal impact on global food supplies, land use, and commodity prices. Many legume trees can be grown on so-called marginal land with beneficial effects to the environment through their symbiotic interaction with “Rhizobia” and the associated process of root nodule development and biological nitrogen fixation. Once established legume trees can live for many years and some produce an annual yield of oil-rich seeds. For example, the tropical and sub-tropical legume tree Pongamia pinnata produces large seeds (∼1.5-2 g) that contain about 40% oil, the quality and composition of which is regarded as highly desirable for sustainable biofuel production. Here we consider the benefits of legume trees as future energy crops, particularly in relation to their impact on nitrogen inputs and the net energy balance for biofuel production, and also ways in which these as yet fully domesticated species may be further improved for optimal use as biofuel feedstock.  相似文献

Currently, fossil materials form the majority of our energy and chemical source. Many global concerns force us to rethink about our current dependence on the fossil energy. Limiting the use of these energy sources is a key priority for most countries that pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The application of biomass, as substitute fossil resources for producing biofuels, plastics and chemicals, is a widely accepted strategy for sustainable development. Aquatic plants including algae possess competitive advantages as biomass resources compared to the terrestrial plants in this current global situation. Bio‐oil production from algal biomass is technically and economically viable, cost competitive, requires no capacious lands and minimal water use and reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide. The aim of this paper is to review the potential of converting algal biomass, as an aquatic plant, into high‐quality crude bio‐oil through applicable processes in Malaysia. In particular, bio‐based materials and fuels from algal biomass are considered as one of the reliable alternatives for clean energy. Currently, pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) are two foremost processes for bio‐oil production from biomass. HTL can directly convert high‐moisture algal biomass into bio‐oil, whereas pyrolysis requires feedstock drying to reduce the energy consumption during the process. Microwave‐assisted HTL, which can be conducted in aqueous environment, is suitable for aquatic plants and wet biomass such as algae.  相似文献

The first committed steps of steroid/hopanoid pathways involve squalene synthase (SQS). Here, we report the Escherichia coli production of diaponeurosporene and diapolycopene, yellow C30 carotenoid pigments, by expressing human SQS and Staphylococcus aureus dehydrosqualene (C30 carotenoid) desaturase (CrtN). We suggest that the carotenoid pigments are synthesized mainly via the desaturation of squalene rather than the direct synthesis of dehydrosqualene through the non-reductive condensation of prenyl diphosphate precursors, indicating the possible existence of a “squalene route” and a “lycopersene route” for C30 and C40 carotenoids, respectively. Additionally, this finding yields a new method of colorimetric screening for the cellular activity of squalene synthases, which are major targets for cholesterol-lowering drugs.  相似文献

Hydrocracking of vacuum gas oil (VGO) - vegetable oil mixtures is a prominent process for the production of biofuels. In this work both pre-hydrotreated and non-hydrotreated VGO are assessed whether they are suitable fossil components in a VGO-vegetable oil mixture as feed-stocks to a hydrocracking process. This assessment indicates the necessity of a VGO pre-hydrotreated step prior to hydrocracking the VGO-vegetable oil mixture. Moreover, the comparison of two different mixing ratios suggests that higher vegetable oil content favors hydrocracking product yields and qualities. Three commercial catalysts of different activity are utilized in order to identify a range of products that can be produced via a hydrocracking route. Finally, the effect of temperature on hydrocracking VGO-vegetable oil mixtures is studied in terms of conversion and selectivity to diesel, jet/kerosene and naphtha.  相似文献

Across the energy sector, alternatives to fossil fuels are being developed, in response to the dual drivers of climate change and energy security. For transport, biofuels have the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels in the short‐to medium term. However, the ecological benefits of biofuels and the role that their deployment can play in mitigating climate change are being called into question. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a widely used approach that enables the energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of biofuel production to be calculated. Concerns have nevertheless been raised that published data show widely varying and sometimes contradictory results. This review describes a systematic review of GHG emissions and energy balance data from 44 LCA studies of first‐ and second‐generation biofuels. The information collated was used to identify the dominant sources of GHG emissions and energy requirements in biofuel production and the key sources of variability in published LCA data. Our analysis revealed three distinct sources of variation: (1) ‘real’ variability in parameters e.g. cultivation; (2) ‘methodological’ variability due to the implementation of the LCA method; and (3) ‘uncertainty’ due to parameters rarely included and poorly quantified. There is global interest in developing a sustainability assessment protocol for biofuels. Confidence in the results of such an assessment can only be assured if these areas of uncertainty and variability are addressed. A more defined methodology is necessary in order to allow effective and accurate comparison of results. It is also essential that areas of uncertainty such as impacts on soil carbon stocks and fluxes are included in LCA assessments, and that further research is conducted to enable a robust calculation of impacts under different land‐use change scenarios. Without the inclusion of these parameters, we cannot be certain that biofuels are really delivering GHG savings compared with fossil fuels.  相似文献

Purpose

The crude palm oil (CPO) extraction is normally done by a wet extraction process, and wastewater treatment of the wet process emits high levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs). A dry process extracts mixed palm oil (MPO) from palm fruit without using water and has no GHG emissions from wastewater treatment. This work is aimed at determining the GHG emissions of a dry process and at evaluating GHG savings on changing from wet to dry process, including land use change (LUC) effects.

Methods

Life cycle assessment from cradle to gate was used. The raw material is palm fruits. The dry process includes primary production, oil room, and utilities. MPO is the main product, while palm cake and fine palm residue are co-products sold for animal feed. Case studies were undertaken without and with carbon stocks of firewood and of nitrogen recycling at plantations from fronds. Allocations by mass, economic, and heating values were conducted. The trading of GHG emissions from co-products to GHG emissions from animal feed was assessed. The GHG emissions or savings from direct LUC (dLUC) and from indirect LUC (iLUC) effects and for the change from wet to dry process were determined.

Results and discussion

Palm fruit and firewood were the major GHG emission sources. Nitrogen recycling on plantations from fronds significantly affects the GHG emissions. With the carbon stocks, the GHG emissions allocated by energy value were 550 kg CO2 eq/t MPO. The GHG emissions were affected by ?3 to 37% for the change from wet to dry process. When the plantation area was increased by 1 ha and the palm oil extraction was changed from wet to dry process, and the change included dLUC and iLUC, the GHG savings ranged from ?0.94 to 5.08 t CO2 eq/ha year. The iLUC was the main GHG emission source. The GHG saving mostly originated from the change of extraction process and from the dLUC effect. Based on the potential use of biodiesel production from oil palm, during 2015–2036 in Thailand, when the extraction process was changed and dLUC and iLUC effects were included, the saving in GHG emissions was estimated to range from ?35,454 to 274,774 t CO2 eq/year.

Conclusions

The change of palm oil extraction process and the LUC effects could minimize the GHG emissions from the palm oil industry. This advantage encourages developing policies that support the dry extraction process and contribute to sustainable developments in palm oil production.

The potential of microalgae as a source of biofuels and as a technological solution for CO2 fixation is subject to intense academic and industrial research. In the perspective of setting up massive cultures, the management of large quantities of residual biomass and the high amounts of fertilizers must be considered. Anaerobic digestion is a key process that can solve this waste issue as well as the economical and energetic balance of such a promising technology. Indeed, the conversion of algal biomass after lipid extraction into methane is a process that can recover more energy than the energy from the cell lipids. Three main bottlenecks are identified to digest microalgae. First, the biodegradability of microalgae can be low depending on both the biochemical composition and the nature of the cell wall. Then, the high cellular protein content results in ammonia release which can lead to potential toxicity. Finally, the presence of sodium for marine species can also affect the digester performance. Physico-chemical pretreatment, co-digestion, or control of gross composition are strategies that can significantly and efficiently increase the conversion yield of the algal organic matter into methane. When the cell lipid content does not exceed 40%, anaerobic digestion of the whole biomass appears to be the optimal strategy on an energy balance basis, for the energetic recovery of cell biomass. Lastly, the ability of these CO2 consuming microalgae to purify biogas and concentrate methane is discussed.  相似文献

Environmental concerns and depletion of fossil fuels along with government policies have led to the search for alternative fuels from various renewable and sustainable feedstocks. This review provides a critical overview of the chemical composition of common commercial plant oils, i.e., palm oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, WCO, and CTO and their recent trends toward potential biofuel production. Plant oils with a high energy content are primarily composed of triglycerides (generally >?95%), accompanied by diglycerides, monoglycerides, and free fatty acids. The heat content of plant oils is close to 90% for diesel fuels. The oxygen content is the most important difference in chemical composition between fossil oils and plant oils. Triglycerides can even be used directly in diesel engines. However, their high viscosity, low volatility, and poor cold flow properties can lead to engine problems. These problems require that plant oils need to be upgraded if they are to be used as a fuel in conventional diesel engines. Biodiesel, biooil, and renewable diesel are the three major biofuels obtained from plant oils. The main constraint associated with the production of biodiesel is the cost and sustainability of the feedstock. The renewable diesel obtained from crude tall oil is more sustainable than biofuels obtained from other feedstocks. The fuel properties of renewable diesel are similar to those of fossil fuels with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In this review, the chemical composition of common commercial plant oils, i.e., palm oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, and tall oil, are presented. Both their major and minor components are discussed. Their compositions and fuel properties are compared to both fossil fuels and biofuels.  相似文献

The state transition in cyanobacteria is a long-discussed topic of how the photosynthetic machine regulates the excitation energy distribution in balance between the two photosystems. In the current work, whether the state transition is realized by “mobile phycobilisome (PBS)” or “energy spillover” has been clearly answered by monitoring the spectral responses of the intact cells of the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis. Firstly, light-induced state transition depends completely on a movement of PBSs toward PSI or PSII while the redox-induced one on not only the “mobile PBS” but also an “energy spillover”. Secondly, the “energy spillover” is triggered by dissociation of PSI trimers into the monomers which specially occurs under a case from light to dark, while the PSI monomers will re-aggregate into the trimers under a case from dark to light, i.e., the PSI oligomerization is reversibly regulated by light switch on and off. Thirdly, PSI oligomerization is regulated by the local H+ concentration on the cytosol side of the thylakoid membranes, which in turn is regulated by light switch on and off. Fourthly, PSI oligomerization change is the only mechanism for the “energy spillover”. Thus, it can be concluded that the “mobile PBS” is a common rule for light-induced state transition while the “energy spillover” is only a special case when dark condition is involved.  相似文献

Even with the most meticulous planning, and utilizing the most experienced fossil-hunters, fossil prospecting in remote and/or extensive areas can be time-consuming, expensive, logistically challenging, and often hit or miss. While nothing can predict or guarantee with 100% assurance that fossils will be found in any particular location, any procedures or techniques that might increase the odds of success would be a major benefit to the field. Here we describe, and test, one such technique that we feel has great potential for increasing the probability of finding fossiliferous sediments - a relatively simple spectral signature model using the spatial analysis and image classification functions of ArcGIS®10 that creates interactive thematic land cover maps that can be used for “remote” fossil prospecting. Our test case is the extensive Eocene sediments of the Uinta Basin, Utah - a fossil prospecting area encompassing ∼1200 square kilometers. Using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery, we “trained” the spatial analysis and image classification algorithms using the spectral signatures of known fossil localities discovered in the Uinta Basin prior to 2005 and then created interactive probability models highlighting other regions in the Basin having a high probability of containing fossiliferous sediments based on their spectral signatures. A fortuitous “post-hoc” validation of our model presented itself. Our model identified several paleontological “hotspots”, regions that, while not producing any fossil localities prior to 2005, had high probabilities of being fossiliferous based on the similarities of their spectral signatures to those of previously known fossil localities. Subsequent fieldwork found fossils in all the regions predicted by the model.  相似文献

The global economy heads for a severe energy crisis: whereas the energy demand is going to rise, easily accessible sources of crude oil are expected to be depleted in only 10–20 years. Since a serious decline of oil supply and an associated collapse of the economy might be reality very soon, alternative energies and also biofuels that replace fossil fuels must be established. In addition, these alternatives should not further impair the environment and climate. About 90% of the biofuel market is currently captured by bioethanol and biodiesel. Biodiesel is composed of fatty acid alkyl esters (FAAE) and can be synthesized by chemical, enzymatic, or in vivo catalysis mainly from renewable resources. Biodiesel is already established as it is compatible with the existing fuel infrastructure, non-toxic, and has superior combustion characteristics than fossil diesel; and in 2008, the global production was 12.2 million tons. The biotechnological production of FAAE from low cost and abundant feedstocks like biomass will enable an appreciable substitution of petroleum diesel. To overcome high costs for immobilized enzymes, the in vivo synthesis of FAAE using bacteria represents a promising approach. This article points to the potential of different FAAE as alternative biofuels, e.g., by comparing their fuel properties. In addition to conventional production processes, this review presents natural and genetically engineered biological systems capable of in vivo FAAE synthesis.  相似文献

Diminishing fossil fuel resources as well as growing environmental and energy security concerns, in parallel with growing demands on raw materials and energy, have intensified global efforts to utilize wood biopolymers as a renewable resource to produce biofuels and biomaterials. Wood is one of the most abundant biopolymer composites on earth that can be converted into biofuels as well as used as a platform to produce bio-based materials. The major biopolymers in wood are cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin which account for >90% of dry weight. These polymers are generally associated with each other in wood cell walls resulting in an intricate and dynamic cell wall structure. This mini-review provides an overview of major wood biopolymers, their structure, and recent developments in their utilization to develop biofuels. Advances in genetic modifications to overcome the recalcitrance of woody biomass for biofuels are discussed and point to a promising future.  相似文献

Pigment-depleted Photosystem II reaction centers (PS II-RCs) from a higher plant (pea) containing five chlorophyll a (Chl) per two pheophytin a (Phe), were treated with Chl and several derivatives under exchange conditions [FEBS Lett. 434 (1998) 88]. The resulting reconstituted complexes were compared to those obtained by pigment exchange of “conventional” PS II-RCs containing six Chl per two Phe. (1) The extraction of one Chl is fully reversible. (2) The site of extraction is the same as the one into which previously extraneous pigments have been exchanged, most likely the peripheral D1-H118. (3) Introducing an efficient quencher (Ni-Chl) into this site results in only 25% reduction of fluorescence, indicating incomplete energy equilibration among the “core” and peripheral chlorophylls.  相似文献

Biofuels from continuous fast pyrolysis of soybean oil: A pilot plant study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The continuous fast pyrolysis of soybean oil in a pilot plant was investigated. The experimental runs were carried out according to an experimental design alternating the temperature (from 450 to 600 °C) and the concentration of water (from 0% to 10%). The liquid products were analyzed by gas chromatography and by true boiling point (TPB) distillation. A simple distillation was used to obtain purified products such as gasoline and diesel. Physical–chemical analysis showed that these biofuels are similar to fossil fuels. Mass and energy balances were carried out in order to determine the vaporization enthalpy and the reaction enthalpy for each experiment. The thermal analysis showed that it is possible to use the products as an energy source for the process.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of freeze-dried and dissected small muscle biopsy specimens (“dry”) for the determination of human muscle electrolyte content and ouabain binding capacity, compared with an easier method, without this freeze-drying step (“wet”). Freeze-drying and dissection of muscle biopsy specimens reduced the variation in the determination of muscle potassium and magnesium content. The total coefficient of variation was 8.6% in the dry determination of muscle potassium content and 13.5% in the wet determination (P< 0.05). In the determination of muscle magnesium content, the total coefficient of variation was 7.4% in the dry determination and 13.7% when determined wet (P< 0.005). Muscle sodium content had a very large coefficient of variation, independent of the method used. The content of dry solids was too high in biopsies which were incubated in Tris–vanadate buffer (31.9%), compared to biopsies which were not incubated in Tris–vanadate buffer (24.9%,P< 0.001). Hereby, the measured ouabain binding capacity became too high when measured wet. In conclusion, muscle electrolyte content and ouabain binding capacity should be determined after drying and microdissection of the biopsies, because this method confers the least variation and the highest accuracy.  相似文献

In recent years, liquid biofuels for transport have benefited from significant political support due to their potential role in curbing climate change and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. They may also participate to rural development by providing new markets for agricultural production. However, the growth of energy crops has raised concerns due to their high consumption of conventional fuels, fertilizers and pesticides, their impacts on ecosystems and their competition for arable land with food crops. Low-input species such as Jatropha curcas , a perennial, inedible crop well adapted to semiarid regions, has received much interest as a new alternative for biofuel production, minimizing adverse effects on the environment and food supply. Here, we used life-cycle assessment to quantify the benefits of J. curcas biofuel production in West Africa in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and fossil energy use, compared with fossil diesel fuel and other biofuels. Biodiesel from J. curcas has a much higher performance than current biofuels, relative to oil-derived diesel fuels. Under West Africa conditions, J. curcas biodiesel allows a 72% saving in greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional diesel fuel, and its energy yield (the ratio of biodiesel energy output to fossil energy input) is 4.7. J. curcas production studied is eco-compatible for the impacts under consideration and fits into the context of sustainable development.  相似文献

We investigated the system expansion approach to net energy analysis for ethanol production from domestic corn grain. Production systems included in this study are ethanol production from corn dry milling and corn wet milling, corn grain production (the agricultural system), soybean products from soybean milling (i.e. soybean oil and soybean meal) and urea production to determine the net energy associated with ethanol derived from corn grain. These five product systems are mutually interdependent. That is, all these systems generate products which compete with or displace all other comparable products in the market place. The displacement ratios between products compare the equivalence of their marketplace functions. The net energy, including transportation to consumers, is 0.56 MJnet/MJ of ethanol from corn grain regardless of the ethanol production technology employed. Using ethanol as a liquid transportation fuel could reduce domestic use of fossil fuels, particularly petroleum. Sensitivity analyses show that the choice of allocation procedures has the greatest impact on fuel ethanol net energy. Process energy associated with wet milling, dry milling and the corn agricultural process also significantly influences the net energy due to the wide ranges of available process energy values. The system expansion approach can completely eliminate allocation procedures in the foreground system of ethanol production from corn grain.  相似文献

The present world population is largely fed by ‘industrialised agriculture’. This, in turn, depends on massive inputs of fossil fuels. While this energy expenditure is inescapable, it is an expensive way of ‘converting oil into potatoes'. Arguably, in view of global climate change, ever increasing population, ever increasing oil prices, ever diminishing availability of water and arable land, this is not sustainable. Despite the fact that biofuels inevitably compete for resources that might otherwise be used to grow, store and distribute food, they are frequently held to be desirable and feasible ‘green’ substitutes for fossil fuels and even that they spare carbon emissions to the atmosphere. This article challenges the absurdity of such ‘retro-agriculture’ (i.e. except in a few local circumstances) incurring yet more energy expenditure. It seeks to illustrate the misinformation on which some of the advocacy of biofuels has been based.  相似文献

This study presents the discovery of a right cercopithecine calcaneus from the site of ‘Ubeidiya, Israel, dated to ca. 1.6 Ma. The fossil is described and statistically compared to bones of modern and fossil cercopithecids. The specimen can be attributed to a large-bodied cercopithecine and represents a new primate taxon previously unidentified in the Early Pleistocene of the Southern Levant. Among extant genera, it is most clearly similar to calcanei of Theropithecus. However, it could also represent Paradolichopithecus, but this alternative is unlikely due to the morphological uniqueness of the latter taxon. The finding of an African taxon in the Levant suggests a circum-Mediterranean dispersal route for the taxon out of Africa, and emphasizes the importance of the Levantine corridor as a biogeographic dispersal route between Africa and Eurasia during the Early Pleistocene. Evidence for the biogeography of large-bodied primates is essential for the understanding of the dispersal routes of “Out of Africa I” taxa and can help elucidate Homo dispersal patterns in the Early Pleistocene.  相似文献
