Background

Understanding the ecological consequences of roads and developing ways to mitigate their negative effects has become an important goal for many conservation biologists. Most mitigation measures are based on road mortality and barrier effects data. However, studying fine-scale individual spatial responses in roaded landscapes may help develop more cohesive road planning strategies for wildlife conservation.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigated how individuals respond in their spatial behavior toward a highway and its traffic intensity by radio-tracking two common species particularly vulnerable to road mortality (barn owl Tyto alba and stone marten Martes foina). We addressed the following questions: 1) how highways affected home-range location and size in the immediate vicinity of these structures, 2) which road-related features influenced habitat selection, 3) what was the role of different road-related features on movement properties, and 4) which characteristics were associated with crossing events and road-kills. The main findings were: 1) if there was available habitat, barn owls and stone martens may not avoid highways and may even include highways within their home-ranges; 2) both species avoided using areas near the highway when traffic was high, but tended to move toward the highway when streams were in close proximity and where verges offered suitable habitat; and 3) barn owls tended to cross above-grade highway sections while stone martens tended to avoid crossing at leveled highway sections.

Conclusions

Mortality may be the main road-mediated mechanism that affects barn owl and stone marten populations. Fine-scale movements strongly indicated that a decrease in road mortality risk can be realized by reducing sources of attraction, and by increasing road permeability through measures that promote safe crossings.  相似文献

The effects of road traffic mortality on amphibian populations are in many cases hard to estimate and speculate, primarily due to the inaccuracy of the methods employed in studies. We have analyzed amphibian road mortality during two breeding seasons on selected road sections adjoining spawning ponds and have critically reviewed methods used for estimating the impact of road traffic on migrating amphibians. The mortality rates of particular amphibian species differed significantly and varied according to year, site, and traffic volume. The highest mortality was recorded for Bufo bufo and the lowest for Lissotriton vulgaris. Species-specific parameter estimates of mortality, evaluated on a daily basis counts of roadkills, were positively correlated with the mean body mass of the amphibian species. The share of a given species among carcasses found on the road, commonly used in such studies, proved to be an unreliable measure of mortality. We found that nearly 60% of amphibian roadkill victims had disappeared within 24?h of exposure, and the number of missing carcasses was inversely related to body mass.  相似文献

The majority of Africa''s parks and conservation areas have a vast road network, facilitating motorized vehicle game viewing. These roads have an influence that is both road type‐ and species‐specific, on the surrounding ecosystem. Due to their higher traffic volumes, we hypothesized that tar roads and their immediate surrounds within the Kruger National Park, South Africa, are avoided to a greater extent by medium‐to‐large mammals than comparable dirt roads in the park. We systematically recorded the presence of medium‐to‐large mammal species from our vehicle, recording data at 401 tar and 369 dirt road stops in the Kruger National Park. In addition to species presence, we also estimated the proximity of animals to the road, as well as herd sizes. Our results indicate an equal likelihood of viewing the commonly recorded medium‐to‐large mammal species from both road types. The likelihood of observing larger herd sizes was also similar between tar and dirt roads for the three most commonly observed species, African elephant (Loxodonta africana), impala (Aepyceros melampus), and plains zebra (Equus quagga), and the likelihood of viewing impala and zebra close to the road also did not differ between tar and dirt roads. However, elephant was observed more often close to tar roads, compared to dirt roads. We interpreted this as the result of potentially increased woody cover associated with more water runoff in close proximity to tar roads compared with dirt roads. Our results not only have ecological significance, supporting the notion that many of the park''s species are habituated to human infrastructure, but also management implications, informing park officials about the influence of road traffic and road type on wildlife distributions.  相似文献

从保障极端干旱区生态安全、生物多样性以及土地资源的合理配置的目的出发,采用最小累积阻力模型,分析于田县生态源地空间扩张的最小阻力分布,在此基础上对生态用地保护的重要性进行分级,进而设置生态用地规划情景,同时对影响于田县生态用地空间分布的驱动因素进行了探讨。结果表明:(1)于田县生态用地分为生态核心区、生态控制区、生态过渡区、生态保护区4种类型,其面积分别为9622.20、1078.45、10846.70、8322.65 km~2,其中生态核心区和生态控制区主要分布在研究区南部昆仑山谷地和克里雅河及相关支流水域等沿岸;生态过渡区和生态保护区主要分布在东部和北部广大的荒漠戈壁区域。(2)于田县生态用地规划受到自然和社会经济因素多方面的制约,具体表现在受绿洲经济的发展、环境绿化建设、城镇化以及人口和收入等主要因子的影响。于田县生态用地规划以期为极端干旱区绿洲生态用地合理开发和保护提供了重要科学依据。  相似文献

One of the most obvious impacts of roads on wildlife is vehicle-induced mortality. The aims of this study were to examine the spatial pattern of mammal–vehicle collisions (MVCs), identify and examine factors that contribute to MVCs, and determine whether the factors that increase the odds of MVCs are similar between species. On 103 road surveys that covered 7,094 total km I recorded the location of each MVC along the survey route. I measured landscape and roadway features associated with each MVC and used kernel density and network analysis tools to identify road mortality hotspots and measure spatial clustering of MVCs. I used logistic regression to model the likelihood of MVCs for all mammal data and separately for Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), Raccoon (Procyon lotor), Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) and Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) data sets. I identified 51 MVC hotspots and found spatial clustering of MVCs for Porcupines, Raccoons and Skunks. Two landscape variables, distance to cover and the presence of an ecotone, as well as one road variable, road width, appeared as broadly important predictors of mammalian road mortality, though there was also species-specific variation in factors that increased the risk of MVCs. Field-measured variables were more important than remotely-measured variables in predicting the odds of MVCs. Conservation implications are that mitigation of landscape features associated with higher risk of vehicle-collisions may reduce the number of MVCs in general, but species-specific research is required to more carefully tailor mitigation efforts for particular species.  相似文献

We report a novel pattern in species richness, complementary to the well‐known species–area relationship. We show that, as sample area increases, the variation in relative richness decreases among otherwise comparable spatial units. This pattern holds for southern African birds, French birds, Cape Proteaceae and the trees of Barro Colorado Island. We propose a scale‐free method for quantifying this pattern by measuring the multifractal intensity of species richness, which is the multi‐scale tendency of adjacent patches with the same area to differ in richness. By this measure, spatial variability is strongest for Cape Proteaceae and weakest for Barro Colorado Island trees. Our results have implications for area‐dependent estimates of species‐richness, for example in reserve planning and in simulation‐based studies. They imply that such estimates are most accurate for large areas, and will be subject to substantial uncertainty when the multifractal intensity is high and the area is small. For comparative purposes, multifractal intensity may be used as a supplement or as an alternative to mean richness, as well as for other ecological densities, such as biomass distribution and local abundance.  相似文献

Road mortality of freshwater turtles can be high enough to imperil populations near roads, thus there is a need to efficiently and accurately locate regions of excessive road-kill along road networks for mitigation. Weekly over 2?years, we drove a 160?km highway circuit in northeastern New York State, USA and recorded the location of all detected road-kill of three freshwater turtle species (Chelydra serpentina, Chrysemys picta, Emydoidea blandingii). We then analyzed the spatial dispersion of road-kill and the road and landscape features associated with road-kill locations. Road-kill was most prevalent at a limited number of short road segments, termed ‘hotspots’. The locations of hotspots, as indicated by kernel density analysis, and the peak spatial extent of hotspots (250?m), as indicated by Ripley’s?K, corresponded to the locations and average lengths of causeways (road segments with wetlands within 100?m on both sides). Hotspots were located at causeways that were greater than 200?m length and characterized by high traffic volumes, close proximity to water, and high forest coverage. We conclude that freshwater turtle road mortality is spatially aggregated at short, severe hotspots, and hotspot locations can be predicted when the locations of wetlands, traffic volumes, and the land-uses bordering roads are known. Hotspot models using these predictors can locate sites along a road network that are the most promising for mitigation to reduce excessive road mortality and maintain connectivity.  相似文献

生态用地指以发挥自然生态功能为主,具有重要生态系统服务功能或生态环境脆弱、生态敏感性较高的土地。它是土地利用与生态建设的直接联系,关系区域生态系统的稳定性和安全性。生态用地的研究有利于建立合理的土地利用系统,完善区域生态安全格局,促进经济社会发展与生态环境相协调。在不同尺度下,生态用地的内涵、性质、主导功能以及规划方法都有所不同,结合我国土地利用规划及城市规划的层次划分,选取市域和中心城区为研究范围,其中市域为中尺度代表范围,中心城区为小尺度代表范围,分别分析了两种尺度下生态用地的内涵及区别,提出了相应的规划方法及侧重点。定量规划方面,中心城区生态用地主要结合国家相关法规、规定、政策等确定;而市域生态用地采取借鉴法、土地利用结构数量优化方法以及情景分析三种方法综合确定。空间规划方面,城区生态用地采取分类规划方法,分别对点线面三类生态用地进行提取,主要步骤为辨识重要生态源,构建面状生态用地;结合水体和交通缓冲区,构建线状生态用地;提取关键节点,构建点状生态用地;生态用地分类。市域生态用地则采取综合规划方法,主要步骤为提取特殊生态用地、基于生态用地结构功能和生态敏感性等的生态建设重要性评价、生态用地空间提取及分类。  相似文献

We assessed the magnitude, composition, and spatial and temporal patterns of road mortality of native vertebrates on two highways in southern Brazil from 18 January 2003 to 26 January 2004. The highways cross remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, a global biodiversity hotspot, and differ in vehicle traffic and surrounding landscape. We compared the road-kill magnitude and composition of birds, mammals, and reptiles between roads and seasons. We used a modified K statistic to depict the spatial patterns of roadkills of these groups and tested the association between vehicle traffic and road mortality through linear regression. We recorded 869 kills of 92 species. The two roads differed regarding the abundance and composition of roadkills. Reptile road mortality was higher in summer than winter, but all other groups did not show significant difference in the magnitude of mortality between seasons. The composition of killed assemblages differed significantly for some of the taxonomic groups among seasons. We found only one positive association between roadkills and vehicle traffic (reptiles on one of the roads), suggesting that vehicle flow does not explain the road-kill temporal variation on these roads. Total vertebrate, bird, and mammal roadkills showed significant spatial aggregations possibly due to variation in vehicle traffic, highway design, and local landscape condition and arrangement. With expected expansion of the road network, mitigation measures for multi-species assemblages should include habitat protection, soil use regulation, road crossing structures, speed reducers, and campaigns to raise people’s awareness about road impacts on wildlife.  相似文献

2004—2020年城市总体规划以来,北京经历了快速的城市化发展期,城市景观格局发生了很大变化。采用TM遥感影像为信息源,通过RS解译建立了2003、2007和2011年北京市土地利用覆盖空间数据,利用Fragstats对景观格局特征指数进行了计算和分析,分别从全市域和六环内城市化典型地区两个尺度研究了北京市城市景观格局时空变化特征,结合社会经济、城市总体规划和城市发展政策因素,分析了北京城市景观格局变化的驱动力因素。研究结果表明,过去近10年,市域景观特征发生了深刻变化,建设用地保持较快的增长速度,其比例由15.0%上升至18.0%,相反耕地面积比例由21.3%下降至18.8%。林地一直是市域的优势景观类型,比例维持在51%以上。而六环内城市化典型地区的景观变化更加明显,建设用地比例增加近10%,是六环地区的优势景观类型,耕地比例相应减少10%。建设用地的增长主要以耕地占用为主。景观格局指数的分析表明,大尺度和小尺度的景观格局变化表现出不同的特征,市域大尺度建设用地斑块破碎化程度高,景观蔓延度、聚合度下降,景观多样性增加;而小尺度六环内的建设用地斑块破碎化趋势降低,景观蔓延度和聚合度上升,但景观多样性下降迅速。大小两个尺度的景观空间形态均表现出复杂性增加的趋势。通过景观格局变化的驱动因素分析,人口规模的增加、产业结构调整、城市总体规划的实施以及城市发展政策的变化是导致景观格局变化的主要因素。  相似文献

In wildlife considerations in planning and managing road corridors little attention has been given to the effects of disturbance by traffic on populations of breeding birds. Recent studies, however, show evidence of strongly reduced densities of many species of woodland and open habitat in broad zones adjacent to busy roads. The density reduction is related to a reduced habitat quality, and traffic noise is probably the most critical factor. Because density can underestimate the habitat quality, the effects on breeding populations are probably larger than have been established. In consequence, species that did not show an effect on the density might still be affected by traffic noise. On the basis of this recent knowledge, methods have been developed that can be used in spatial planning procedures related to main roads, and in road management practice, and some practical points are discussed. An example of application shows that the effects are probably very important in The Netherlands with a dense network of extremely crowded main roads. For meadow birds, which are of international importance, the decrease in population in the West of The Netherlands may amount to 16%. Because breeding birds suffer from many other environmental influences there is also a great risk of an important cumulation of effects.  相似文献

稳定、高效的生态安全格局对于"建设雄安新区"国家战略具有重大意义。然而,目前尚缺乏一套科学、弹性的规划方法,用于指导新区建设。采用层次分析(AHP)和有序加权平均(OWA)空间多准则评估方法,结合Google Earth Engine遥感云计算技术和InVEST模型,在量化生态系统服务和生态风险的基础上,模拟新区生态安全格局。首先,生态安全格局涉及众多专业领域,内涵较为丰富,决策过程应采用参与式方法,建立包含生态环境和社会经济因素在内的综合指标体系,奠定格局构建的决策基础;其次,AHP-OWA方法按不同决策情景(风险),提供了一整套"完全保护—中立—完全开发"的空间决策集,定量揭示"保护—开发"权衡关系,为格局构建提供充足决策支持;最后,白洋淀保护地以及启动和起步区建设,会对生态安全格局产生重要影响,所以构建工作应在科学规划启动和起步区建设的同时,围绕白洋淀开展。未来在"绿色生态宜居新城区"目标指引下,新区建设方案应以"保护优先"为基本原则,结合重要区域、现有规划和资金预算等要素共同确定,实现保护与开发的"双赢"。  相似文献

ABSTRACT To maximize success, reintroduction programs generally select predator-free release areas having high habitat quality. Past studies provide little insight into recovery efforts where multiple, potentially novel, mortality hazards occur. The ability of translocated animals to cope with novel environments can be affected by both pre- and postrelease experiences with habitat and mortality risks. We experimentally released elk (Cervus elaphus) having different background experiences into an area where predators and hunters were prevalent and habitat quality varied. Using a competing risks approach, we predicted the postrelease survival of individuals and their fidelity to release areas as a function of animal source and postrelease encounters with forage resources and areas used by wolves (Canis lupus) or humans. Mortality patterns were consistent with prerelease exposure to mortality risks but not habitat differences among source areas. Wolf predation, poaching, and legal Native hunting were equivalent in magnitude and accounted for the majority of elk mortalities. Familiarity with either wolves or hunters prior to release yielded first-year survival rates 1.9-2.2 times greater than observed for animals naive to both risks. These 2 primary sources of mortality traded off temporally as well as spatially given the proximity of roads, which wolves avoided. The prevalence of forage resources in release areas increased fidelity to release sites but coincided with higher mortality risk during the critical first year, potentially setting an ecological trap for animals naïve to local risks. Translocated individuals largely mediated their respective vulnerabilities over time, showing second-year survival rates equivalent to resident elk. In addition to using source populations that are able to adjust to mortality risks in release areas, spatial and temporal variation in mortality risks might be exploited when planning releases to increase the success of translocations into risky landscapes. In the last decades, the colonization of Mediterranean Europe and of other temperate regions by Aedes albopictus created an unprecedented nuisance problem in highly infested areas and new public health threats due to the vector competence of the species. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and the Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) are insecticide-free mosquito-control methods, relying on mass release of irradiated/manipulated males, able to complement existing and only partially effective control tools. The validation of these approaches in the field requires appropriate experimental settings, possibly isolated to avoid mosquito immigration from other infested areas, and preliminary ecological and entomological data. We carried out a 4-year study in the island of Procida (Gulf of Naples, Italy) in strict collaboration with local administrators and citizens to estimate the temporal dynamics, spatial distribution, and population size of Ae. albopictus and the dispersal and survival of irradiated males. We applied ovitrap monitoring, geo-spatial analyses, mark-release-recapture technique, and a citizen-science approach. Results allow to predict the seasonal (from April to October, with peaks of 928–9,757 males/ha) and spatial distribution of the species, highlighting the capacity of Ae. albopictus population of Procida to colonize and maintain high frequencies in urban as well as in sylvatic inhabited environments. Irradiated males shown limited ability to disperse (mean daily distance travelled <60m) and daily survival estimates ranging between 0.80 and 0.95. Overall, the ecological characteristics of the island, the acquired knowledge on Ae. albopictus spatial and temporal distribution, the high human and Ae. albopictus densities and the positive attitude of the resident population in being active parts in innovative mosquito control projects provide the ground for evidence-based planning of the interventions and for the assessment of their effectiveness. In addition, the results highlight the value of creating synergies between research groups, local administrators, and citizens for affordable monitoring (and, in the future, control) of mosquito populations.  相似文献

In view of the upcoming road network improvement and expansion in Ethiopia, specifically in Tigray, it is also necessary to understand the potential impacts of road accidents with wildlife vertebrate animals. Road mortality detection surveys were conducted from March 2013 to June 2014. We surveyed around 530 km using vehicle with special emphasis given to roads surrounded by wetlands, forests, rocky areas and rivers each month. Additional information was also collected using a standardized questionnaire. A total of twenty species, 143 individuals of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals were recorded as road vehicular accidents in the surveyed area. Of all, mammals showed the highest species richness (80 individuals belonging to ten species) followed by birds (49 individuals belonging to eight species). The survey revealed most accidents happened during the early morning and late evening. This might be due to relatively high traffic and continued activity of wild animals at that time, besides the driver's inability to avoid accidents when it is dark. Wildlife underpasses during road construction, location of crossing structures, rules of wildlife conservation, improving driver's awareness are relevant in this context and may be the most important mitigation measures to reduce mortality of wildlife on the roads.  相似文献

Urban land ecological security plays an important role in alleviating human–land conflicts and in coordinating the development of natural and human resources and the environment. However, the subject of the present urban land ecological security is poorly studied. Given the circumstances, this paper presents a spatial exploring model for urban land ecological security (ULESM) based on the modified artificial bee colony algorithm (MABCA). The paper improves ABCA with a spatial grid, designed a grid-based ABCA calculation framework, ABCA's data structure, information-sharing mechanism and position selection strategy, introduces the model of spatial coupling and coordination degree for urban ecological security, and achieves spatial detection of ecologically hazardous areas. Taking Guangzhou as an example, this paper simulated the hazardous regions of the urban ecological land (assumed area: 50% of total area of Guangzhou), yielding favorable results. The results show that the ULESM based on MABCA exhibits an excellent global search and a rapid global-convergence speed, preventing a bee colony from being trapped in a local optimum. It can also effectively detect regions with urban land ecological hazards and provide intelligence-aided methods for decision making in urban ecological security and spatial planning  相似文献

ABSTRACT Road mortality is often spatially aggregated, and there is a need for models that accurately and efficiently predict hot spots within a road network for mitigation. We surveyed 145 points throughout a 353-km highway network in New York State, USA, for roadkill of reptiles and amphibians. We used land cover, wetland configuration, and traffic volume data to identify features that best predicted hot spots of herpetofauna road mortality. We resampled 40 points an additional 4 times over 4 years to evaluate temporal repeatability. Both amphibian and reptile road mortality were spatially clustered, and road-kill hot spots of the 2 taxa overlapped. One survey provided a valid snapshot of spatial patterns of road mortality, and spatial patterns remained stable across time. Road-kill hot spots were located where wetlands approached within 100 m of the road, and the best predictor was a causeway configuration of wetlands (wetlands on both sides of the road). We validated causeways as predictors of road mortality by surveying 180 causeways and 180 random points across 5 regions (17,823 km2) of northeastern New York. Causeways were 3 times more likely than random locations to have amphibian and 12 times more likely to have reptile mortality present, and causeways had a 4 times higher total number of amphibian roadkill and 9 times higher reptile roadkill than did random points. We conclude it is possible to identify valid predictors of hot spots of amphibian and reptile road mortality for use when planning roads or when conducting surveys on existing roads to locate priority areas for mitigation.  相似文献

城市生态网络构建是城市生态系统服务有效发挥作用的保障,构建完善的生态网络对于城市生态格局的优化具有重要的意义。结合雄安新区总体规划,通过雄安新区生态系统服务供给、需求两个层面识别生态源地。基于源地-缓冲区-廊道-节点框架,构建新区生态网络。其中,基于生态源地与城镇用地驱动因子,运用最小累积阻力方法得到累积阻力差,构建新区三生空间布局。根据成本距离分析和路径分析,结合雄安新区规划绿带分布,生成生态廊道,并在廊道与廊道交汇点、重要生态功能与脆弱的关键点以及道路轨道交汇点识别生态节点。得出:(1)新区生态源地主要位于白洋淀、公园绿地与其他绿地,分为水域生态源和林地生态源两类生态源地,面积总共728 km2。城镇源地主要位于新区东部容城县与雄县城区以及一些零星的农村居民点区域,面积为166 km2。(2)在新区三生空间布局下,加强生态廊道的构建,提升生态源地之间、生态源地与城镇源地之间的连通性,新区生态廊道主要依赖河流廊道和林地廊道两种类型。(3)在新区未来生态网络的建设中,需要重点关注河流廊道交汇点、河流廊道与城区的交汇处、交通道路与生态用地交汇处等的生态节点的建设及其生态功能的提升。  相似文献

生态空间是维持城市可持续发展的自然基础,其组成、规模及分布对国土空间生态安全具有重要影响。国土空间规划和城乡规划建设管理必须遵循"山水林田湖草是生命共同体"理念,优化国土空间开发保护格局,合理保护与利用生态空间。以南宁市为例,在梳理国土空间用途管制相关概念的基础上,提出了以生态控制线为核心的生态空间管控体系,通过生态安全评价与生态敏感性评价,识别研究区关键生态问题与核心生态资源,构建区域生态安全格局并划定生态控制线,制定空间管制方案,建立了一种基于"本底评价-格局构建-底线管控"的生态空间规划方法。结果表明:(1)研究区整体生态安全状态较好,但建设用地侵占生态空间的问题有待解决。(2)研究区生态高度敏感区占比40.70%,在空间上集中连片分布,生态连通性较高,是生态安全格局和生态控制线的主要载体。(3)研究区生态安全格局由"一轴、一环、五区,多廊道、多节点"的生态要素构成。(4)研究区生态控制线占比达86.03%,通过实施分级管制,严格保护核心生态资源,合理利用次级生态资源。(5)生态控制线实现了对全域生态空间的管制,是国土空间规划和城乡规划建设管理的前提和基础。研究成果可为南宁市国土空间规划和生态保护修复提供技术与决策支撑,也可为其他城市的生态空间规划提供参考。  相似文献
