Anatomy and ultrastructure of prosomal salivary glands in the unfed water mite larvae Piona carnea (C.L. Koch, 1836) were examined using serial semi-thin sections and transmission electron microscopy. Three pairs of alveolar salivary glands shown are termed lateral, ventro-lateral and medial in accordance with their spatial position. These glands belong to the podocephalic system and are situated on the common salivary duct from back to forth in the above mentioned sequence. The arrangement of the medial glands is unusual because they are situated one after another on the medial (axial) body line, therefore they are termed anterior and posterior medial glands. The secretory duct of the anterior medial gland mostly turns right, and the duct of the posterior gland turns left. The salivary glands are located in the body cavity partly inside the gnathosoma and in the idiosoma in front of the brain (synganglion). Each gland is represented by a single acinus (alveolus) and is composed of several cone shaped secretory cells arranged around the large central (intra-acinar) cavity with the secretory duct base. The cells of all glands are filled with secretory vesicles of different electron density. The remaining cell volume is occupied by elements of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the membrane enveloping vesicles may have ribosomes on its external surface. Large nuclei provided with large nucleoli occupy the basal cell zones. The pronounced development of the prosomal salivary glands indicates their important role in extra-oral digestion of water mite larvae.  相似文献

Synopsis We tested how algal turbidity and light conditions influence anti-predator behaviour of first-feeding pike. Results showed that pike larvae were able to detect the predator by both chemical and visual signals in turbid water. However, the anti-predator behaviour was reduced in turbid water compared with clear water. Larvae hid in the vegetation in the presence of predator cues more in clear water than in turbid water. The attack rate on zooplankton in clear water was lower in the presence of predator cues, whereas no such difference was detected in turbid water. Both of these results indicate that turbidity acted as a refuge for larvae. Light proved to be an important regulating factor for feeding pike in the absence of predators, demonstrated as lowered attack rates in 50 light level in both clear and turbid water. This indicates that long-term turbidity may be critical for small larvae, which need to feed continuously to survive.  相似文献

Growth of pike larvae: effects of prey, turbidity and food quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We studied experimentally the effects of turbidity and prey composition on pike larval growth and hypothesized that pike larval growth varies with turbidity and food quality. We reared the first-feeding pike larvae (Esox lucius) in laboratory tanks with (1) clear or (2) turbid water provided with zooplankton rations from (3) an inner and (4) an outer archipelago site. The sites differ in physical features, salinity, eutrophication status, zooplankton community structure and density. Pike larvae showed the highest weight increase in clear water with zooplankton from the outer site and the poorest weight increase in turbid water with zooplankton as prey from the inner site. Our fatty acid analysis revealed that unsaturated fatty acid levels were highest in the outer site. The relative percentage of copepods was also higher in the outer site. This study supports the hypothesis that turbidity weakens the ability of pike larvae to capture certain prey. Further, zooplankton community composition matters in turbid water, but is not a primary factor in clear water.  相似文献

Samples from the liver of a male rat (Sprague-Dawley), a monkey (Macacus rhesus), and a longnose gar pike (Lepisosteus osseus) were studied in a transmission electron microscope to provide cytological and histological information about structures previously poorly documented in the literature. Glisson's capsule consisted of dense, irregular connective tissue of typical Type-I collagen fibrils. The capsule was formed by a single stratum of fibroblasts in the rat and in the pike, but by one or two strata of fibroblasts in the monkey. In the rat, but not in the monkey or pike, fibroblast processes interdigitated with processes from the hepatocytes. In the pike, fibroblast processes extended toward both mesothelium and hepatocytes. In some areas of the rat and pike, mesothelial cells had desmosomal connections and microvillous projections into the peritoneal cavity. Marginated heterochromatin was more abundant in the rat and monkey. The mesothelium was discontinuous in the rat and monkey but, in areas of discontinuity, the capsular surface was covered by a basal lamina, often barely perceptible beneath mesothelial cells of the rat and monkey, but prominent in the pike. In the pike, the mesothelium had numerous pinocytotic vesicles on both peritoneal and capsular surfaces.  相似文献

In pike E. lucius L., evidence on maternal effect on reproductive output is mixed. We studied whether older and larger pike females produce eggs and larvae of higher quality (weight, starvation resistance) in three forest lakes in southern Finland. Later, the study lakes were subjected to intensive experimental pike fishing, which we assumed would increase resource availability and lead to higher maternal investment (larger egg size). Length of female pike was positively correlated with the dry weight of eggs and larvae but this relation was dependent on female age. In old females, the effect of female length on egg weight was lower or even negative. Survival analysis showed a positive effect of female length on larval survival time indicating that larvae from larger females are less vulnerable to starvation during the early stage of life. After the intensive pike fishing, the positive effect of female length on egg weight was stronger in all age classes probably due to the released resources. Based on the high quality and amount of reproductive products in large (but not very old) females, they are important for the reproduction of pike populations. This should be considered in fisheries management.  相似文献

The structure and some aspects of the development of the eye of Succinea putris were studied with the aid of the electron microscope. The eye is of the closed vesicle type and is composed of retina, cornea, vitreous body, lens and optic nerve. Three different types of cell are to be found in the retina: (1) the small elongated pigment cell with an avoid nucleus, many pigment granulae and short microvilli at the apical end of the cell; (2) the sensory cell type I with a large irregular nucleus, long microvilli, which extend to under the surface of the lens, a large number of light-cored vesicles, 700 A in diameter and the axon; (3) the elongated slender sensory cell type II with many dense cored vesicles, several pigment granulae in the distal region of the cell and short irregular microvilli at the apical end of the cell. This type is few in number. Two results of the study of the embryonic eye are described: the cornea cells differ from those in the adult eye in the nucleus-cytoplasm relation and the optic nerve is smaller than in the adult eye.  相似文献

A central aspect of simuliid adaption to life in moving water is a silky secretion which they produce in their salivary glands. This secretion is spread on the substrate surface thereby enabling adhesion of the posterior abdominal hooks of the larvae to the substrate surface. Therefore, silk pads are a prerequisit for simuliid filter‐feeding as well as any kind of locomotive activity. If silk pad adhesion is weak, larvae risk drifting off, either directly or during locomotion. Properties of the adhesive (=silk) as well as the substrate surface may cause weak adhesion. A specialist such as S. noelleri which has little chance of surviving after drifting off its lake outlet habitat, should have adaptations to reduce this risk. Such an adaptation could be very durable silk pads, giving larvae the chance to be safely attached for a relatively long time. In this study larval silk pads of S. ornatum and S. noelleri were stained using Giemsa's staining procedures. Changes in silk pad structure and traces of rot after 2–33 days of exposure to stream water were recorded and compared. Silk pads of S. ornatum and S. noelleri showed differences which indicate differences in ageing processes and biochemistry of this secretion.  相似文献

Zoea-1 larvae ofHyas araneus were kept under different nutritional conditions. Their midgut glands were investigated with a transmission electron microscope. The glandular epithelium consists of the cell types known from adult decapods. It is mainly the R-cell type that undergoes ultrastructural alterations which reflect nutritional conditions. R-cells of fed larvae are characterized by large lipid inclusions; after a certain period of food deprivation (point-of-no-return) the original ultrastructure cannot be reestablished. Refeeding results in large glycogen deposits in these cells.  相似文献

Coxal glands of unfed larvae Leptotrombidium orientale (Schluger, 1948) (Trombiculidae), a terrestrial mite parasitizing vertebrates, and Hydryphantes ruber (de Geer, 1778) (Hydryphantidae), a water mite parasitizing insects were studied using transmission electron microscopy. In both species, the coxal glands are represented by a paired tubular organ extending on the sides of the brain from the mouthparts to the frontal midgut wall and are formed of the cells arranged around the central lumen. As in other Parasitengona, the coxal glands are devoid of a proximal sacculus. The excretory duct, joining with ducts of the prosomal salivary glands constitutes the common podocephalic duct, opening into the subcheliceral space. The coxal glands of L. orientale are composed of a distal tubule with a basal labyrinth, an intermediate segment without labyrinth, and a proximal tubule bearing tight microvilli on the apical cell surface and coiled around the intermediate segment. The coxal glands of H. ruber mainly consist of the uniformly organized proximal tubule with apical microvilli of the cells lacking the basal labyrinth. This tubule shows several loops running backward and forward in a vertical plane on the side of the brain. In contrast to L. orientale , larvae of H. ruber reveal a terminal cuticular sac/bladder for accumulation of secreted fluids. Organization of the coxal glands depends on the ecological conditions of mites. Larvae of terrestrial L. orientale possess distal tubule functioning in re‐absorption of ions and water. Conversely, water mite larvae H. ruber need to evacuate of the water excess, so the filtrating proximal tubule is prominent.  相似文献

The molecular packing and phase transition of hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine single bilayers are studied by electron diffraction, using an electron microscope equipped with a hydration stage. The phase transition and area per molecule are measured as functions of temperature, hydration and the surface pressure of the monolayer from which the bilayer is formed. The transition temperature of a bilayer agrees with calorimetric measurements on bulk lipid/water mixtures. The molecular packing of a bilayer corresponds to that of the precursor monolayer at a surface pressure of 47 dyne/cm.  相似文献

采用扫描电镜技术研究了澳洲吹绵蚧lcerya purchase Maskell和埃及吹绵蚧Icerya aegyptiaca(Douglas)不同龄期主要泌蜡腺体和蜡泌物的超微结构.结果发现:成虫期背面的丝状蜡是由多格腺和皮毛共同分泌产生的.卵囊是由雌成虫成熟时腹部腹面的半圆形卵囊带所分泌的,也是实心丝状蜡结构.若虫期吹绵蚧背面覆盖着由多格腺分泌的丝状蜡,实心结构;腹面有长丝状的蜡质缠绕,紧贴腹面体壁的还有一层小蜡圈.  相似文献

Cuticular lipid compositions of all life stages of the stored product moth Plodia interpunctella have been determined. Eggs and adults of P. interpunctella have cuticular lipids consisting solely of hydrocarbons. The composition of eggs and adult females is qualitatively nearly identical with ca. 86 hydrocarbons (11 n-alkanes, 39 monomethyl alkanes, 19 dimethyl alkanes, 11 trimethyl alkanes and 6 monoenes) except females lack the 2-methyl alkanes found in eggs. Adult males have a hydrocarbon composition qualitatively nearly identical to females with the exception that they lack the monoenes. Larval and pupal cuticular lipids are dominated by a mixture of ca. 20 previously described 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones, with only minute amounts of n-alkanes on the larvae and pupae. The 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones are continuously secreted onto their silk webbing and food particles by the paired mandibular glands found in all larvae. Extracts from dissected mandibular glands have a qualitatively identical composition to larval cuticular extracts. The pupal stage (which does not have mandibular glands) is enclosed in a silk cocoon also coated with 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones laid down while the wandering stage larvae spin the cocoon. The 2-acyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones have physical properties which closely mimic those of cuticular hydrocarbons, including melting point and boiling point range and hydrophobicity. This is the first report of an insect with a life stage that does not use conventional cuticular lipids for conservation of water.  相似文献

利用光学显微镜和扫描电镜对21种珍珠菜属植物叶表皮纹饰特征进行了研究。根据叶表皮外壁纹饰特征,可以明显的划分为两种类型,即黑腺珍珠菜型和细梗香草型。这两种类型与以雄蕊群的构造为主要依据的属下分类系统的对应关系不密切,表明叶表皮纹饰特征在亚属级水平上分类学意义不大。但该属植物叶腺体的有无,颜色和分布以及叶表皮纹饰特征在种内相当稳定,种间差异较大,在种级水平上具有重要的分类学意义。  相似文献

本文采用解剖学观察、显微摄影、透射电镜等方法对麦蛾柔茧蜂Habrobracon hebetor幼虫唾液腺的显微形态、超微结构以及发育特性进行了观察和分析。麦蛾柔茧蜂幼虫唾液腺为一对无色透明至乳白色的管状腺体,自口腔沿中肠两侧向后延伸,单侧腺体在中部先分支、后合并成一不规则环状,端部呈单盲管状。唾液腺管道长度随幼虫龄期增加而呈线性增长。对唾液腺切片进行超微结构观察,发现腺管由两类差异明显的单层细胞组成,I型细胞微绒毛层较厚,胞内除有丰富的内质网和线粒体之外,还含有大量囊泡,并观察到囊泡运输分泌颗粒的现象;II型细胞微绒毛短,胞内的内质网和线粒体数量丰富。本文研究为深入探究寄生蜂幼虫的消化生理以及寄生蜂-寄主互作机制奠定了基础。  相似文献

Males of the giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, care for egg masses on vegetation above the water surface. They supply the developing eggs with water and guard them against predators. In the present study, mechanisms by which paternal care is extended were found. Males were found situated just below the water on the natal substrate (usually a stick), and the first instar nymphs were aggregated around the substrate. When disturbed, the males showed aggressive behavior, threatening the intruder with their forelegs. Nymphs up to 12 h old did not attack the offered sibling nymphs or anuran larvae, which are common prey in the field. The 24 h‐old nymphs attacked both prey animals; however, they preferred anuran larvae. Cannibalistic behavior in the nymphs was well developed 72 h after hatching, when the nymphs had already dispersed from the natal substrate. The suppression of sibling cannibalism in younger nymphs would promote the maintenance of tight nymphal aggregations and consequently extend male care in this predatory species.  相似文献

The sense of smell is conveyed by the olfactory sensory neurons of the olfactory mucosa. Uniquely for sensory systems, the olfactory neurons directly face the external environment and are thus vulnerable to infections and changes in the airway surface liquid, but the surface liquid production and maintenance is not well understood. Here we show in rats and mice that Bowman's glands secrete the mucin MUC5AC. Aquaporin-5 was present at the apical face of the olfactory epithelium, completing a water transport pathway to the surface of the epithelium. Immunogold electron microscopy analysis revealed an intricate network of fine Aquaporin-1-positive fibroblast processes that surround Bowman's glands, whereas deeper blood vessels were unlabeled for Aquaporin-1. Our results show how the olfactory mucosa might be protected against infections and dehydration generally and how neuronal function is protected against ion concentration changes in the airway surface liquid by rapid replacement of water losses through the aquaporin pathways.  相似文献

We studied the effect of cyanobacteria on foraging and refuge use in small fish. We measured pike larval feeding in the presence of cyanobacteria by counting leftover prey. Our results showed that feeding by pike larvae on zooplankton prey decreased significantly in the presence of non-toxic cyanobacteria. The behaviour can be due to lowered vision caused by turbidity or clogging of the gills. Further, we tested whether the three-spined stickleback use toxic cyanobacteria as a refuge against predators in a choice experiment. The choice experiment was performed in a Y-maze fluviarum, where the fish could select between two different environments. Our results support the refuge use hypothesis because the three-spined stickleback clearly preferred toxic cyanobacteria to the chemical predator signal. To conclude, cyanobacteria decrease feeding rates in fish larvae, but may function as important refuge for e.g. sticklebacks, during predation pressure in pelagic algal blooms.  相似文献

Filamentous algae may create anoxic, i.e. oxygen free, conditions during night and fish larvae that commonly spend their first months in the littoral may therefore be subject to anoxia. We conducted two different experiments; firstly, we measured behaviour of pike larvae (Esox lucius L.), such as frequency of prey attacks and time in vegetation, in the presence of a chemical predator cue and oxygen deficiency. In the second experimental set-up, pike larval survival was monitored in water with added macro-algal exudates (excreted from Pilayella littoralis) and a low oxygen level (3 mg l− 1). Our results showed that oxygen concentration and the chemical predator signal, caused by three-spined sticklebacks, had strong significant effects on the larval prey attacks. The prey attacks were strongly reduced at 3 mg oxygen l− 1. However, survival of the larvae was not affected by low oxygen and macro-algal exudates. Pike larvae are very tolerant to hypoxia and exudates excreted by the littoral vegetation, whereas prey attacks are strongly decreased in hypoxia when a predator is around. This may have negative consequences for pike larval growth and recruitment in eutrophicated environments.  相似文献

  • 1 Larvae of the ephemeropteran Thraulus bellus were sampled from the substrate interstices of a floodplain pond along the River Adour (south-west France). Quantitative sampling was carried out using traps arranged in five transects of four traps each, made up of five vertical compartments between +20 and -80cm from the surface of the substrate. The 100 compartments thus obtained were each 2.861 volume, and were sampled once a month from January 1988 to January 1989.
  • 2 An influx of young larvae coming from the permanently flooded deep substrate invaded the upper 80cm of the substrate on and after mid-January. An increase in larval density and frequency of occurrence in the compartments occurred until May before emergence of the adults. A second colonization phase by young larvae took place from July to September, and was followed by reductions in larval density and frequency of occurrence during the autumn/winter drop in water level.
  • 3 Horizontal and vertical movements of the larval population within the interstitial habitat of the pond were clearly linked to the water level fluctuations. However, differences between the five transects indicated a control of these movements by factors such as slope of the substratum, macrophytic vegetation, and the influence of springs. A relationship was found between population density and probability of submergence of the compartments, indicating that the larvae avoided locations most influenced by the fluctuating water levels.
  • 4 The temporarily flooded substrate interstices appear to be a refuge for the larvae of T. bellus, preventing them from overlapping with two other abundant ephemeropterans, namely Cacnis horaria from silt habitats and Cloeon gr. simile from macrophyte beds.

Pigment cells in Psammechinus miliaris larvae are frequently found in regions which are morphogenetically active. They can be seen in living larvae from the the midgastrula stage up to metamorphosis. Their early development and typical characters as seen by the electron microscope are described. Histochemical methods have revealed carotenoids which are preferentially located in the pigment granules. The findings are discussed in relation to published data on photopigments. It is suggested that caroteno-proteins of the pigment cells are involved in photo-activated processes which support larval migration and/or morphogenesis.  相似文献
