Effects of algal and terrestrial carbon on methane production rates and methanogen community structure in a temperate lake sediment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Sources of atmospheric CH4 are both naturally occurring and anthropogenic. In fact, some anthropogenic activities may influence the production of CH4 from natural sources, such as lakes. 2. Ongoing changes in the catchment of lakes, including eutrophication and increased terrestrial organic carbon export, may affect CH4 production rates as well as shape methanogen abundance and community structure. Therefore, inputs from catchments to lakes should be examined for their effects on CH4 production. 3. We added algal and terrestrial carbon separately to lake sediment cores and measured CH4 production. We also used quantitative polymerase chain reaction and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism to determine the effects of these carbon additions on methanogen abundance and community composition. 4. Our results indicate that CH4 production rates were significantly elevated following the addition of algal biomass. Terrestrial carbon addition also appeared to increase methanogenesis rates; however, the observed increase was not statistically significant. 5. Interestingly, increased CH4 production rates resulted from increases in per‐cell activity rather than an increase in methanogen abundance or community compositional shifts, as indicated by our molecular analyses. 6. Overall, anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems can influence methanogenesis rates and should be considered in models of global methane cycling and climate. 相似文献

Empirical relationships between profundal macroinvertebrate biomass and environmental variables in boreal lakes of Alberta, Canada 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. We empirically modelled profundal macroinvertebrate biomass (PMB) from collections of macroinvertebrates and a suite of trophic, water chemistry and morphometric variables from 26 lakes located within the Boreal Mixedwood and Boreal Subarctic ecoregions of Alberta, Canada.
2. Hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (mg L−1 ) explained 37% of the variance in PMB ((g m−2 )0.1 ) as a quadratic function, whereas water temperature (°C) explained 23% of variance in a linear relationship.
3. In contrast with other studies based on oligotrophic systems, indirect indicators of food availability (i.e. chlorophyll a and total phosphorus concentrations and Secchi depth) were not significant predictors of PMB in this study.
4. The predictive power of our models may be improved by obtaining more frequent (seasonal) estimates of PMB and hypolimnetic DO concentration and by quantifying biotic factors such as competition, predation, life history phenologies and recruitment success. 相似文献

- 1 The taxonomy, distribution and habitat preferences of Chironomus larvae from profundal benthos of reservoirs and natural lakes in Spain are presented. The 114 water bodies studied were medium to large reservoirs and lakes throughout Spain, and were visited on at least two occasions (summer and winter). Out of the natural lakes investigated, Chironomus larvae were found only in one karstic lake (Banyoles), and to date, these have not been found in the high mountain lakes of the Spanish Pyrenees or Sierra Nevada, or in Spain's largest oligotrophic lake (Sanabria).
- 2 Multiple regression with environmental data from reservoirs showed that the density of Chironomus larvae was inversely correlated with water depth, temperature and sulphide content of the bottom water, but positively correlated with alkalinity and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) content of bottom water. Thus, the density of Chironomus larvae was higher in shallow reservoirs from the eastern part of Spain (calcareous water and higher PON), but markedly lower in southern reservoirs (higher temperature and higher sulphide).
- 3 According to morphological and cytological characteristics, three species of this genus have been identified in the samples examined: C. bernensis, C. plumosus and C. nuditarsis. Reasons for the absence of other widespread European species are discussed.
- 4 Using canonical correspondence analysis to relate species and environmental variables, C. bernensis showed a significant preference for reservoirs with higher oxygen concentrations in bottom water and lower total reactive phosphorus (TRP) content at the surface than those reservoirs where C. plumosus‐type were found. This suggests that the smaller C. bernensis prefers mesotrophic reservoirs and the larger C. plumosus‐type (C. plumosus + C. nuditarsis) prefers eutrophic reservoirs. Taking into account the TRP/depth index for those samples collected at depths below the thermocline, and thus, where oxygen can be a limiting factor, C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis were present in reservoirs in which the index was low (< 1:170 for C. bernensis and >1:800 for C. nuditarsis), while C. plumosus thrived in reservoirs with higher index values (<1:20). These differences may reflect the preference of C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis for detrital material, while C. plumosus prefers phytoplankton. These observations are in agreement with the depth distribution of each species: C. plumosus was restricted to reservoirs less than 46 m deep, whereas the other two species (i.e. C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis) were found up to depths of 65 and 80 m, respectively.
- 5 Data from a transect (5–20 m deep) in Lake Banyoles are consistent with the general pattern described in reservoirs. In this lake, a high density of C. bernensis was recorded from littoral and sublittoral areas with abundant oxygen (above or close to the thermocline), whereas C. plumosus was scarce in several parts of the lake, especially in oxygen‐deficient areas during the summer. This karstic, oligotrophic lake has a low TRP/depth index, and therefore, we expected C. bernensis to be dominant in the littoral, as is the case. Nevertheless, the severe depletion of oxygen caused by meromixis, and the high hydrogen sulphide concentration benefit C. plumosus in deeper zones. Chironomus nuditarsis was scarce in Lake Banyoles and only found at considerable depths.

Fifty-seven small- to middle-size lakes of Sweden (size-range from <0.1 to about 200 km2) representing different regions and lake-types were selected for the purpose of demonstrating the indicative value of profundal oligochaete communities also of relatively small lakes. It is well known since previously that profundal oligochaete assemblages of large lakes in Europe may be particularly indicative of the current trophic situation, but little has been known about smaller lakes in this respect. Characterizations based on oligochaete community structure in these lakes could be summarized in eight different groups: Characteristic oligochaete communities in oligotrophic lakes of relatively small size are Spirosperma ferox, Stylodrilus heringianus and Tubifex tubifex. Oligochaete species richness is low (1–3 species) and so is species abundance (<300 specimens m–2). Very eutrophic lakes of the same size-range are largely dominated by the tubificids Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and/or Potamothrix hammoniensis. Substitute or complementary species may be T. tubifex. Species richness is usually low (1–3 species), but abundance is high to very high (>5000 specimens m–2). Mesotrophic to moderately eutrophic lakes of the same size categories contain more species than the above extremes, most of them being fairly tolerant to oxygene deficiency such as Tubifex ignotus, a number of species of the genera Aulodrilus and Limnodrilus and a variety of so-called Ponto-Caspian Potamothrix species, most of them having recently invaded south-eastern Sweden. Species richness is moderate to high (4–8 species), while abundance may vary considerably (range from about 300 to about 5000 specimens m–2). In this respect, small- to middle-size lakes do not differ much from larger lakes. For the trophic characterization of lake water the mean concentrations of total-phosphorus (in g l–1) is generally regarded to be the most appropriate measure. The match between characterizations based upon oligochaete community structure and total-phosphorus concentrations is generally very good for large lakes. The present study shows that this applies fairly well also to the majority of the small- to middle-size lakes selected for this study. This has not been shown before. Obvious deviations from this rule could be caused by a scarcity of reliable chemical data, or considerable seasonal shifts in the chemical composition ot the water, which in its turn may be caused by short water residence time. Littoral elements in the fauna, which are generally less indicative, or effects of local inflows may also be more frequent here than in lakes of larger size. 相似文献

Meiobenthic and macrobenthic oligochaetes were collected from two depths in Lake Päjänne and examined together with environmental data in which two environmental gradients can be seen. Numbers of Piguetiella blanci, Aeolosoma quaternarium and Aeolosoma hemprichi were positively correlated with oxygen saturation and negatively correlated with total phosphorus and COD suggesting that these species are indicators of oligotrophic conditions. Numbers of Amphichaeta leydigii, Specaria josinae and Vejdovskyella comata were positively correlated with total phosphorus which implies that these species prefer eutrophic conditions. The last three species and Dero digitata showed positive correlations with COD and organic sedimentation, which suggests that they also indicate organic loading. A decrease in aeolosomatid biomass was seen with increasing phosphorus and organic loading. The average body size of detritus-feeding naidids in the upper part of the profundal zone was reduced by organic loading, and more clearly eutrophication, which emphasizes the importance of including meiobenthic oligochaetes in pollution investigations. Of the naidid and aeolosomatid species, Chaetogaster langi preferred the greatest depths of the profundal zone while most of the other species were more abundant at 20 m rather than at the maximum depth. Clustering of the oligochaete taxa supported these observations and clustering of sampling stations based on oligochaete variables generally corresponded to clustering based on environmental data. 相似文献

Oligochaetes were sampled using meiobenthos methods from depths of between 20 and 94 m in Lake Päijänne in 1986. Individuals belonging to several species of the Naididae and Aeolosomatidae, which are generally considered to include mainly littoral or lotic species, were found more or less regularly at these profundal depths. The naidid species Chaetogaster langi and Amphichaeta leydigii were more abundant in the deepest areas than at 20 m. Species also appeared to react differently to water quality. The naidid species Chaetogaster langi and the aeolosomatid species Aeolosoma quaternarium, A. hemprichi and Rheomorpha neiswestnovae were most abundant on average at oligotrophic, unpolluted stations, naidid species Amphichaeta leydigii, Specaria josinae and Vejdovskyella comata were more abundant at eutrophicated stations and Dero digitata was more abundant in organically loaded areas. The observations of Amphichaeta leydigii, Chaetogaster setosus and Rheomorpha neiswestnovae were new for Finland. 相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of the large (3,558 km2) Lake Peipsi-Pihkva was monitored at 22–24 sampling spots yearly in June 1964–1994 as well as 50 shallow-water profiles in mid-summer 1970, 1980, and 1990. No qualitative changes were observed in the bottom fauna, except for the introduction of a Baikalian gammarid species, Gmelinoides fasciatus. The average total biomass in June (without big molluscs) revealed considerable annual fluctuations, with an insignificant general tendency of increase. The increase was significant in the biomass of several Mollusca (including the highly abundant big clam Dreissena polymorpha), Asellus, Gammaridae, and Hirudinea but not in the most abundant animal groups Chironomidae and Oligochaeta. The low biomass of Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae decreased significantly. The mid-summer samples taken from the shallow-water zone in three different years revealed the highest biomass in 1980 and the lowest in 1990 (the latter being probably related to the high water level). A gradual decrease in the biomass of the Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae as well as the Oligochaeta, Pisidiidae and Bithynia tentaculata occurred in the shallow-water zone, while the Gammaridae increased on the account of the introduced species. No coincidence was found with the neighbouring Lake Võrtsjärv when comparing the annual fluctuations of biomass. A general tendency to a slow increase in total biomass and a decrease in the biomass of the most vulnerable groups Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae, probably due to progressing eutrophication, were common for both lakes. 相似文献

Measurement and verification of rates of sediment phosphorus release for a hypereutrophic urban lake 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The contribution of sediment release to the phosphorus budget of hypereutrophic Onondaga Lake was determined through laboratory measurements made on intact cores. Rates ranged from 9–21 mg P m–2 d–1 with a mean of 13 mg P m–2 d–1, values similar to those observed in other lakes of comparable trophic state. There was no statistically significant trend in rates in time (July versus September) or in space (location along the major N/S axis of the lake). Rates of sediment phosphorus release measured in the laboratory compared favorably with the observed rate of soluble reactive phosphorus accumulation in the lake's hypolimnion. The sediments are the second largest source of phosphorus for Onondaga Lake, contributing 24% of the overall phosphorus load to the system. 相似文献

Composition and distribution of bottom oligochaete fauna of a north Italian eutrophic lake (Lake Ledro) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The profundal macroinvertebrates, particularly the oligochaetes, of Lake Ledro (Trento, Italy), that has recently undergone eutrophication, were studied.A statistical approach of random sampling was used to study the distribution and abundance of the oligochaete species. The optimum sample number was calculated from a preliminary sample series. The oligochaete community was made up of five tubificid species, one naidid and one lumbriculid species that on average represents more than 80% of the macrobenthic community. Population density was correlated with depth and decreasing oxygen concentration. The role of Tubifex tubifex as a eutrophic, tolerant species was confirmed; and in fact it was the only species found (although at low density) in the deepest and anoxic zone. No comparable data are available for the lake prior to eutrophication, but these data will be valuable for future comparison once a remediation program for the lake has been implemented. 相似文献

为揭示现阶段太湖大型底栖动物群落现状及其对生态环境变化的响应, 于2007年2月至2008年11月对太湖大型底栖动物进行为期两周年的季度调查。30个采样点共记录底栖动物3门7纲19科40种, 底栖动物平均密度和生物量空间差异较大, 平均密度高值出现在梅梁湾、竺山湾及河口, 主要为寡毛纲颤蚓类; 平均生物量高值出现在贡湖湾、西湖区、东太湖和东部湖湾, 主要为软体动物。霍甫水丝蚓(Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri)、中华河蚓(Rhyacodrilus sinicus)、河蚬(Corbicula fluminea)、铜锈环棱螺(Bellamya aeruginosa)、中国长足摇蚊(Tanypus chinensis)和钩虾属一种(Gammarus sp.)是现阶段太湖大型底栖动物的优势种。聚类分析将30个采样点分成3组, 相似性分析检验表明各聚类组大型底栖动物群落具有显著差异(P<0.05)。多样性分析结果表明, 东太湖和东部湖湾物种多样性、丰富度和均匀度最高, 优势种为腹足纲螺类; 梅梁湾、竺山湾及河口多样性最低、密度最高, 霍甫水丝蚓和中华河蚓在该区占据绝对优势; 贡湖湾、湖心和西湖区多样性处于中等水平, 其优势种为河蚬。研究结果表明营养水平、底质类型以及水生植被的分布是决定太湖大型底栖动物群落结构及多样性的关键因子。 相似文献

Lakes N-1 and N-2 at the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research site at Toolik Lake, Alaska, U.S.A. were fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus for 5 and 6 years, respectively. The response and recovery of the microplankton community (protozoans, rotifers and crustacean nauplii) differed in the two lakes. Microplankton biomass in Lake N-1 increased five-fold while that in Lake-N-2 only doubled, despite larger nutrient additions to N-2. Microplankton community structure in Lake N-1 shifted toward dominance by few taxa, while the community in Lake N-2 maintained diversity. Finally, the recovery of Lake N-1 to near prefertilization microplankton biomass levels was rapid, while Lake N-2 showed at least a 1-year lag in recovery. These differences appear to be related to differences in the structure of lake sediments. 相似文献

Determining algal-available phosphorus of differing origin: routine phosphorus analyses versus algal assays 总被引:5,自引:1,他引:5
Eutrophication of surface waters can be accelerated by anthropogenic P-inputs, provided that P is in a form available to aquatic primary producers. Potentially algal-available P (Paa) under aerobic conditions was determined with a dual-culture assay from 172 samples representing P in point and nonpoint sources and in lacustrine matter. The availability of P – expressed as the proportion of Paa in total P (Tot-P) – ranged from 0 to 100%. In the different P sources, the mean availability ranged from 3.4 to 89% in descending order: wastewater of rural population > biologically treated urban wastewater > dairy house wastewater > biologically and chemically treated urban wastewater > field runoff > forest industrial effluent > fish fodder and feces > river water > field surface soil > forest runoff > lake settling matter > lake bottom sediments. Of the P fractions, dissolved reactive P (o-P) was highly available to algae, whereas particulate P (Ppart) and dissolved unreactive P (unr-Pdiss) contributed to Paa to a lower but varying degree. An approach based on source-dependent availability coefficients, derived from the algal assays, appeared promising in transforming the load of Tot-P into that of Paa. Although the values for Paa obtained by the dual-culture assay probably underestimate the true levels for ultimately available P, they may still give valuable information for eutrophication abatement. 相似文献

Recent changes in submersed macrophytes and water quality variables have been offered as the strongest evidence that the current restoration program at Lake Apopka will be effective (Lowe et al., 2000); however, the new beds of submersed plants in Lake Apopka are found only on hard substrates on the fringes of the lake within 40 m of shore and are protected from waves by cattails (Typha spp.). They occupy only 0.02% of the lake area, and there is no indication that they can colonize the flocculent sediments that make up 90% of the lake area. There is no correlation between annual inputs of phosphorus and total phosphorus concentrations in the lake, and patterns of change in chlorophyll and other water quality variables do not follow changes in phosphorus loads. Rather than reflecting decreases in phosphorus loading, the recent changes could be related to the harvest of benthivorous fish or are just the normal fluctuations found in lakes that have not been perturbed. Regardless of the reason the macrophytes were lost in the 1940s, the new analyses confirm our previous findings that the high turbidities in Lake Apopka are due to the resuspension of sediments, and that the fluid mud cannot support the colonization of submersed aquatic macrophytes. Even without the fluid mud, the target phosphorus concentration of 55 mg m–3 is too high to bring about the restoration of the former macrophyte beds in the lake. 相似文献

Barton, Sutton and Stalham Broads are shallow, man-made lakes formed in mediaeval times when peat excavations were flooded. Recently, a once diverse submerged macrophyte flora has, in most broads, been replaced by large phytoplankton populations. This change has been attributed to increased nutrient loadings. The seasonal cycles of chlorophyll α, nitrogen and phosphorus in the three broads are described and the inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus to Barton Broad are budgeted. A reduction in the phosphorus loading is recommended as the best method of restricting phytoplankton populations in these broads. An equation relating phosphorus loading, flushing rate, mean depth and retention coefficient to mean standing phosphorus concentration is used to predict the reduction in phosphorus loading required to limit phytoplankton populations and permit the re-establishment of submerged macrophytes. 相似文献

We review the evidence showing that the high turbidity levels of Lake Apopka are due primarily to resuspended sediments rather than phytoplankton, and that this situation is likely to persist unless there is a fundamental change in the lake. We discuss the reasons why reductions in phosphorus inputs, the gizzard shad removal program, and macrophyte plantings would not bring about such a change. Potentially the marsh flow-way could remove the flocculent sediments because of a unique combination of a very large surface area (125 km2), a mean depth of only 1.7 m, a layer of easily resuspended fluid mud, and a marsh flow-way that is designed to filter the lake volume about 2 times a year. Using several different estimates of the rate of sediment formation in the lake, our model calculates that it would take from 275 to 502 years to remove the sediments, so the lake could not attain clear water in a reasonable length of time. The model is mathematically correct but will give nonsense results if one tries to calculate removal times when the lake is accumulating sediments rather than losing them. 相似文献

Sedimentary diatom assemblages in two large oligotrophic clear-water lakes were analysed, to assess their present ecological state and possible eutrophication due to diffuse nutrient loading. The lakes Pyhäjärvi and Puruvesi (Finnish lake district) are proportionally large for their catchment areas which accounts for their long retention times (ca 7 and 11 yr) and oligohumic character. Pyhäjärvi was studied by pairwise comparison of surface sediment diatom assemblages collected in 1985 and 1990 at 12 sites from different parts of the lake. In Puruvesi, the stratigraphy of diatoms was analysed in two short cores from 8 m and 32 m depths.The diatom assemblages of the two lakes are rather similar, and quite distinct from the assemblages of the mesohumic large lakes of the area. Cyclotella kuetzingiana is the most common planktonic dia- tom, but Aulacoseira ambigua abounds in Pyhäjärvi at sites with local sources of eutrophication. A diverse assemblage of benthic forms, especially Fragilaria and Achnanthes spp. characterizes the shallow bottoms in both lakes.There was little change within the short-core diatom profiles of Puruvesi, but the floral composition of the 8-m and 32-m sites differed markedly. The 8-m site, with 60–70% of benthic forms, represents illuminated bottom, on which much of the buried algae have lived in situ, while the deeper site is true profundal, dominated by sedimented planktonic algae.In Pyhäjärvi there was a slight increase in the benthic diatoms from 1985 to 1990, coinciding with increased phosphorus and chlorophyll concentrations as well as Secchi depth lowering. We interprete this observation as a very early step of eutrophication, of which first the sessile algal communities of the illuminated bottom areas have benefited. 相似文献

- Rates of methanogenesis in freshwater sediments have been shown to increase with inputs of phytoplankton biomass. Although many studies have shown the importance of resource quality for decomposition, little is known of the importance of substrate quality on rates of methanogenesis.
- Here, we studied the effects of lipid content and taxonomic affiliation of phytoplankton biomass on rates of methanogenesis in lake sediment slurries from five lakes differing in trophic status.
- Substrate quantity had a positive effect on methanogenesis despite differing trophic status. Furthermore, we observed that phytoplankton biomass quality, in terms of lipid content, enhanced methanogenesis rates. However, rates of methanogenesis between lake sediments treated with Scenedemus obliquus or Microcystis aeruginosa did not differ when lipid content was held constant.
- Phytoplankton lipid content has been shown to increase when nutrients are limiting, which may result in an increase in substrate quality for methanogenesis with eutrophication. However, our study revealed that responses of substrate quantity to nutrient enrichment likely outpace the effects of resource quality and may result in a net increase in CH4 emissions from eutrophied lakes. Interestingly, the resource quality feedback may at least partially reduce the potential effect of eutrophication on lake methanogenesis.
