The present study was reported to examine whether the circannual pupation rhythm in Anthrenus verbasci is derived from a circadian rhythm through a process of frequency demultiplication. This frequency demultiplication hypothesis requires that the period of the circannual rhythm is proportional to the period of the entrained circadian rhythm. When larvae were reared under constant photoperiods of T = 20h, 22h, 24h and 26h at 20°C, the larval duration differed among the photoperiodic conditions, although there was no positive correlation between the period of T cycle and larval duration. The differences among photoperiods may have been caused by the duration of the photophase. Therefore, the results did not support the frequency demultiplication hypothesis.  相似文献

The frequency demultiplication hypothesis (FDH) posits that circannual rhythms are generated from circadian cycles by frequency transformation to the lower-frequency rhythm. To test the FDH, we determined the periods of the circannual body mass and estrous cycles of golden-mantled ground squirrels with circadian locomotor activity rhythms entrained to 23-, 24-, or 25-hr days (T-cycles). Circannual period length did not differ among squirrels entrained to the different T-cycles; intergroup ranges were 298-314 days and 303-312 days, respectively, for body mass and estrus. These results are not consistent with the FDH and suggest instead that separate mechanisms generate circadian and circannual rhythms. In ground squirrels the circannual system influences circadian organization, but a reciprocal influence of circadian on circannual rhythms has yet to be demonstrated.  相似文献

This paper describes the detailed characteristics of the circannual pupation rhythm in Anthrenus verbasci determined by laboratory experiments under various photoperiods and temperatures. The frequency distribution of larval duration showed a periodic pattern over 2-3 years and the period was 37-40 weeks under a constant short-day photoperiod (light:dark 12:12) at 20 degrees C. This rhythm showed temperature compensation to some extent under a short-day photoperiod between 17.5 degrees C and 27.5 degrees C. Under alternations of a long-day (light:dark 16:8) and a short-day photoperiod, pupation occurred 21-24.5 weeks after transfer from a long-day to a short-day photoperiod. Therefore, we concluded that the timing of pupation in A. verbasci is controlled by a circannual rhythm and its zeitgeber is a change in photoperiod. Furthermore, when larvae were transferred from a long-day to a short-day photoperiod at various ages, the larval duration after the photoperiodic transfer depended on the time of the transfer. This difference can be explained by phase-dependent phase shifts in the circannual rhythm.  相似文献

The entrainment behaviour of the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in the field mouse Mus booduga was studied in order to evaluate the role of the animals' free-running period (τ) and the duration of skeleton photoperiods in determining entrainment of animals with τ values beyond and close to the “limits of entrainment”. We predicted that animals with τ lesser than the lower “limit of entrainment” would entrain only to short skeleton photoperiods (≤ 6 h) and not to longer skeleton photoperiods. Experimental animals (n = 25) were entrained to light/dark (LD) 12:12 h schedule, and then subjected to various skeleton photoperiods in which the duration of one of the two intervals of darkness was successively reduced while holding the zeitgeber period (T) constant. Some animals (n = 9) entrained to long as well as short photoperiods, whereas others (n = 5) entrained only to extremely short skeleton photoperiods of 6 h or less. The mean τ of the animals entraining to all photoperiods (23.78 ± 0.22 h) was significantly greater than that of the animals that entrained only to very short skeleton photoperiods (22.43 ± 0.41 h) (t df 12 = 5.3, p < 0.001). We also selected a few animals (n = 11) with average τ value of 23.13 ± 0.38 h and studied them under several skeleton photoperiods. To our surprise the animals which were subjected to restricted dark intervals invariably underwent “phase-jump” assuming the longer dark interval as “subjective night”. We suggest that the observed variation in entrainment behaviour might be due to the variation seen among individual animals in τ and the shape of their PRC. These results support the view that the duration of the skeleton photoperiod and the τ of an individual animal interact to determine its entrainment, and underscore the relevance of inter-individual variation in circadian organisation to studies of circadian rhythms.  相似文献

Circadian and circannual variations of Testosterone, FSH and LH secretions, other than Oral Body Temperature (OBT) have been studied in four healthy males. OBT showed a constant circadian rhythm with an acrophase located in the afternoon. Plasma Testosterone exhibited both a circadian (acrophase = hr 09,28) and a circannual rhythm (acrophase = 22 february); plasma FSH also showed a circannual rhythm (acrophase = 13 february). By mean chronogram +/- SEM we documented the highest LH levels in December and the lowest in February. These observations would suggest the hypothesis that the winter could be the period in which the hypophysis-gonadal axis in young males exhibits its maximal activity as previously documented for other hormones.  相似文献

European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris ) maintained under chronic 12L:12D exhibit testicular cycles with a periodicity of 9–10 months. These circannual testicular cycles incorporate all of the physiologically distinct phases observed during gonadal cycles in starlings under temperate-zone photoperiods. Starlings maintained under chronic 6L-18D also undergo testicular cycles but these cycles: (a) have a relatively short periodicity (about 6 months); (b) include periods of testicular involution, though not to the minimal quiescent level for this species; and (c) do not include the physiologically distinct photorefractory phase separating testicular cycles in starlings under chronic 12L:12D and under temperate-zone photoperiods. While it is possible that testicular cycles in starlings under certain daily light regimens of fixed duration are a function of an endogenous circannual reproductive rhythm, we believe that the testicular cycles generated under both 12L:12D and 6L:18D are the product of gonadotropin secretion rates controlled by circadian (not circannual) oscillations periodically entrained by these chronic photoperiods.  相似文献

Summary Photoperiod plays an important role in controlling the annual reproductive cycle of the male lizard Anolis carolinensis. The nature of photoperiodic time measurement in Anolis was investigated by exposing anoles to 3 different kinds of lighting paradigms (resonance, T cycles, and night breaks) to determine if photoperiodic time measurement involves the circadian system. Both the reproductive response and the patterns of entrainment of the activity rhythm were assessed. The results show that the circadian system is involved in photoperiodic time measurement in this species and that a discrete photoinducible phase resides in the latter half of the animals' subjective night. Significantly, the ability of the circadian system to execute photoperiodic time measurement is crucially dependent on the length of the photoperiod. Resonance, T cycle and night break cycles utilizing a photoperiod 10–11 h in duration reveal circadian involvement whereas these same cycles utilizing 6 or 8 h photoperiods do not.Abbreviation CRPP circadian rhythm of photoperiodic sensitivity  相似文献

In the subtropical finch, spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) circannual rhythms (of gonads, fattening, feeding) have been demonstrated in an information-free environment of continuous illumination (LL), rendering it an ideal model for research on the physiology of the circannual clock. In an attempt to understand the involvement, if any, of the circadian system in the genesis of circannual rhythms, we studied the effect of pinealectomy (LL 15 lux) and strong continuous illumination (LL 300 lux), both known to abolish circadian rhythms, on the circadian perch-hopping rhythm and on the circannual rhythm of reproduction and fattening in the same birds. While both pinealectomy and LL 300 lux treatments abolished the circadian rhythm of motor activity, they had no effect on the circannual rhythms of gonadal size and fattening. If the endogenous circadian rhythm in perch-hopping can be taken to reflect the circadian clock mechanism associated with gonadal functioning, present results suggest that circannual rhythm of reproduction in spotted munia is independent of circadian events.  相似文献

Endogenous circannual clocks are found in many long-lived organisms, but are best studied in mammal and bird species. Circannual clocks are synchronized with the environment by changes in photoperiod, light intensity and possibly temperature and seasonal rainfall patterns. Annual timing mechanisms are presumed to have important ultimate functions in seasonally regulating reproduction, moult, hibernation, migration, body weight and fat deposition/stores. Birds that live in habitats where environmental cues such as photoperiod are poor predictors of seasons (e.g. equatorial residents, migrants to equatorial/tropical latitudes) rely more on their endogenous clocks than birds living in environments that show a tight correlation between photoperiod and seasonal events. Such population-specific/interspecific variation in reliance on endogenous clocks may indicate that annual timing mechanisms are adaptive. However, despite the apparent adaptive importance of circannual clocks, (i) what specific adaptive value they have in the wild and (ii) how they function are still largely untested. Whereas circadian clocks are hypothesized to be generated by molecular feedback loops, it has been suggested that circannual clocks are either based upon (i) a de-multiplication ('counting') of circadian days, (ii) a sequence of interdependent physiological states, or (iii) one or more endogenous oscillators, similar to circadian rhythms. We tested the de-multiplication of days (i) versus endogenous regulation hypotheses (ii) and (iii) in captive male and female house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We assessed the period of reproductive (testicular and follicular) cycles in four groups of birds kept either under photoperiods of LD 12L:12D (period length: 24h), 13.5L:13.5D (27 h), 10.5L:10.5D (23 h) or 12D:8L:3D:1L (24-h skeleton photoperiod), respectively, for 15 months. Contrary to predictions from the de-multiplication hypothesis, individuals experiencing 27-h days did not differ (i.e. did not have longer) annual reproductive rhythms than individuals from the 21- or 24-h day groups. However, in line with predictions from endogenous regulation, birds in the skeleton group had significantly longer circannual period lengths than all other groups. Birds exposed to skeleton photoperiods experienced fewer light hours per year than all other groups (3285 versus 4380) and had a lower daily energy expenditure, as tested during one point of the annual cycle using respirometry. Although our results are tantalizing, they are still preliminary as birds were only studied over a period of 15 months. Nevertheless, the present data fail to support a 'counting of circadian days' and instead support hypotheses proposing whole-organism processes as the mechanistic basis for circannual rhythms. We propose a novel energy turnover hypothesis which predicts a dependence of the speed of the circannual clock on the overall energy expenditure of an organism.  相似文献

The experiment described here studied the rat motor activity pattern as a function of the photoperiod of circadian light-dark cycles in the limits of entrainment (22-and 23-h periods). In most cases, the overt rhythm showed 2 circadian components: 1 that followed the external LD cycle and a 2nd rhythm that was free run. The expression of these components was directly dependent on the photoperiod, and there was a gradual transition in the manifestation of 1 or the other. The component with a period equal to that of the external cycle was more manifested under long photoperiods, while the other 1 was more expressed during short photoperiods. Also, the period of the free-running component was longer under T22 than T23. For each period, the free-running component was longer under a longer photoperiod. At first sight, the presence of these 2 components in most of the rats might appear to be due to the fact that in the limits of entrainment, some rats do not entrain and thus show a free-running rhythm plus masking. However, the gradation observed in the different patterns of the overt motor activity rhythm, especially those patterns related to the different balance between the 2 components and the length of the period of the free-running component under LD as a function of the photoperiod, suggests that the circadian system can be functionally dissociated.  相似文献

At photoperiods longer than 8h per 24h, adults of the day-active onion fly Delia antiqua showed a major peak of locomotor activity in the late photophase and also bursts of activity induced by lights-on or lights-off. At shorter photoperiods the activity peaks fused. After transfer from long photoperiods to constant darkness (DD), the rhythm free-ran, but only the major peak persisted. This suggests that only the major peak is controlled by the circadian pacemaker. At long photoperiods, the daily phase of the major peak occurred progressively later with age. As a result, the activity at short photoperiods often shifted from photophase to scotophase in old flies. The free-running period (tau) also changed with age; tau was shorter than 24h until 14-20 days after eclosion and thereafter became longer, but a few individuals repeated changes in tau. The phase delay of locomotor activity with age in D. antiqua would be attributable to the increase in tau.  相似文献

This study investigated the entrainment of a larval release rhythm by determining whether a tidal cycle in hydrostatic pressure could entrain the circatidal rhythm in larval release by the crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould). Ovigerous females were collected from a non-tidal estuary. The time of larval release by individual crabs was monitored under constant conditions with a time-lapse video system. Crabs with mature embryos at the time of collection had a pronounced circadian rhythm in larval release with a free running period of 25.1 h. Crabs with immature embryos that were maintained under constant conditions from the time of collection until larval release retained a weak circadian rhythm. Other crabs with immature embryos were exposed to a tidal cycle in step changes in hydrostatic pressure equivalent to 1 m of water. This cycle entrained a circatidal rhythm in larval release. The free-running period was 12.1 h and larvae were released at the time of the transition from low to high pressure. Although past studies demonstrated that a tidal cycle in hydrostatic pressure could entrain activity rhythms in crustaceans, this is the first study to show that pressure can entrain a larval release rhythm.  相似文献

In the circannual pupation rhythm of the varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci, entrainment to annual cycles is achieved by phase resetting of the circannual oscillator in response to photoperiodic changes. In order to examine whether a circadian system is involved in expression of the periodic pattern and phase resetting of the circannual rhythm as photoperiodic responses, we exposed larvae to light-dark cycles with a short photophase followed by a variable scotophase (the Nanda-Hamner protocol). When the cycle length (T) was a multiple of 24 h, i.e., 24, 48, or 72 h, short-day effects were clearer than when T was far from a multiple of 24 h, i.e., 36 or 60 h. Exposure to light-dark cycles of T = 36 h had effects similar to exposure to long-day cycles of T = 24 h. The magnitude of phase shifts depended on the duration and the phase of exposure to the cycles of T = 36 or 60 h. It was therefore concluded that a circadian system is involved in photoperiodic time measurement for phase resetting of the circannual oscillator of A. verbasci.  相似文献

The possible occurrence of circadian and circannual rhythms in the plasma concentrations of the following enzymes of lysosomal origin was assessed: beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.30) beta-D-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31), beta-D-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21), beta-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22), alpha-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23), alpha-L-fucosidase (EC 3.2.1) and alpha-D-mannosidase (EC 3.2.1.24). The circadian rhythm was studied in 16 women (aged: 17-24 years) and 13 men (age: 23 years) volunteers; the circannual rhythm, in 10 women and 8 men (age: 20-25 years). The circadian rhythm was detected in all the tested enzymes of women, and only in alpha-D-galactosidase, beta-D-glucosidase, alpha-D-mannosidase and beta-D-acetylglucosaminidase of men. A statistically significant difference between genders in the circadian rhythm was exhibited by beta-D-galactosidase (MESOR; amplitude) beta-D-glucosidase (MESOR; amplitude; acrophase) beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase, beta-D-glucuronidase and alpha-D-galactosidase (MESOR) and alpha-L-fucosidase (amplitude, acrophase). A circannual rhythm was detected in all the tested enzymes with the exception of beta-D-glucuronidase and beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase; no statistically significant difference between genders was detected. The group rhythms of some of the enzymes (alpha-D-galactosidase, beta-D-glucosidase, beta-D-galactosidase) showed similar values of both circadian and circannual acrophases, suggesting that they may subjected as a group to the same chronobiological coordination, possibly mediated by hormones. The chronobiological rhythms of lysosomal enzymes were different from those of lactate dehydrogenase and alpha 1-antitrypsin, indicating that these rhythms are not merely reflecting fluctuations of the water content of plasma. No in-phase relationship was observed between the circadian and circannual rhythms of plasma cortisol and those of the tested lysosomal enzymes, excluding a direct chronobiological and possibly functional relationship between this hormone and lysosomal enzymes.  相似文献

A group of fourteen men (73 ± 5 yr of age), and eighteen women (77 ± 7 yr of age) institutionalized at the Berceni Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, were studied over a 24-hr span once during each season (winter, spring, summer and fall). All subjects followed a diurnal activity pattern with rest at night and ate three meals per day with breakfast at about 0830, lunch at about 1300 and dinner at about 1830. The meals were similar, although not identical for all subjects during all seasons. On each day of sampling blood was collected at 4-hr intervals over a 24-hr span. Seventeen hormonal variables were determined by radioimmunoassay. Statistically significant circadian rhythms were detected and quantitated by population mean cosinor analysis in pooled data from all four seasons in both sexes for ACTH, aldosterone, Cortisol, C-peptide, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), immunoreactive insulin, prolactin, 17-OH progesterone, testosterone, total T4 and TSH. In women, estradiol and progesterone also were determined and showed a circadian rhythm during all seasons. Total T, and FSH showed circadian rhythm detection by cosinor analysis in the men only; LH showed no consistent circadian rhythm as group phenomenon in men or women.

In those functions in which both the circadian and circannual rhythms were statistically significant, a comparison of the amplitudes showed in the women a higher circannual rather than circadian amplitude for DHEA-S. In 17-OH progesterone, TSH and C-peptide, the circadian amplitude in women was larger. In men, the circannual amplitude of T3 was larger than the circadian amplitude and in insulin the circadian amplitude was larger than the circannual amplitude. An endogenous circannual rhythm drives the seasonal reproductive cycle of a broad spectrum of species. This rhythm is synchronized to the seasons (i.e., entrained) by photoperiod, which acts by regulating the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Prior work has revealed that melatonin patterns secreted in spring/summer entrain the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in sheep, whereas secretions in winter do not. The goal of this study was to determine if inability of the winter-melatonin pattern to entrain the rhythm is due to the specific melatonin pattern secreted in winter or to the stage of the circannual rhythm at that time of year. Either a summer- or a winter-melatonin pattern was infused for 70 days into pinealectomized ewes, centered around the summer solstice, when an effective stimulus readily entrains the rhythm. The ewes were ovariectomized and treated with constant-release estradiol implants, and circannual cycles of reproductive neuroendocrine activity were monitored by serum LH concentrations. Only the summer-melatonin pattern entrained the circannual reproductive rhythm. The inability of the winter pattern to do so indicates that the mere presence of a circadian melatonin pattern, in itself, is insufficient for entrainment. Rather, the characteristics of the melatonin pattern, in particular a pattern that mimics the photoperiodic signals of summer, determines entrainment of the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in the ewe.  相似文献

If the endogenous circadian rhythm in perch-hopping can be taken to reflect the circadian clock mechanism associated with gonadal functioning, present results suggest that circannual rhythm of reproduction in spotted munia is independent of circadian events.  相似文献

Entrainment of circannual rhythms of body mass and reproduction was monitored for 3 years in female golden-mantled ground squirrels maintained in a simulated natural photoperiod. Both pinealectomized and pineal-intact squirrels generated circannual rhythms of body mass and estrus, but only the intact animals entrained these rhythms to a period of 365 days. In the second and third years after treatment, the period of the body mass rhythm was significantly shorter than 365 days for pinealectomized squirrels, and variance in tau among these animals was significantly greater than for intact squirrels. A similar pattern was evident in the rhythm of reproduction, which was phase-disrupted in pinealectomized squirrels but entrained in intacts. Seasonal changes in duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion by the pineal appear to be necessary to produce phase-delays required to entrain the circannual clock to a period of 12 months.  相似文献

Circannual rhythms are innately timed long-term (tau ≈ 12 months) cycles of physiology and behavior, crucial for life in habitats ranging from the equator to the Poles. Here the authors propose that circannual rhythm generation depends on tissue-autonomous, reiterated cycles of cell division, functional differentiation, and cell death. They see the feedback control influencing localized stem cell niches as crucial to this cyclical histogenesis hypothesis. Analogous to multi-oscillator circadian organization, circannual rhythm generation occurs in multiple tissues with hypothalamic and pituitary sites serving as central pacemakers. Signals including day length, nutrition, and social factors can synchronize circannual rhythms through hormonal influences, notably via the thyroid and glucocorticoid axes, which have profound effects on histogenesis. The authors offer 4 arguments in support of this hypothesis: (1) Cyclical histogenesis is a prevalent process in seasonal remodeling of physiology. It operates over long time domains and exhibits tissue autonomy in its regulation. (2) Experiments in which selected peripheral endocrine signals are held constant indicate that circannual rhythms are not primarily the product of interacting hormonal feedback loops. (3) Hormones known to control cell proliferation, differentiation, and organogenesis profoundly affect circannual rhythm expression. (4) The convergence point between photoperiodic input pathways and circannual rhythm expression occurs in histogenic regions of the hypothalamus and pituitary. In this review, the authors discuss how testing this hypothesis will depend on the use of cellular/molecular tools and animal models borrowed from developmental biology and neural stem cell research.  相似文献
