The rapid melting of glaciers as well as the loss of sea ice in the Amundsen Sea makes it an ideal environmental setting for the investigation of the impacts of climate change in the Antarctic on the distribution and production of mesozooplankton. We examined the latitudinal distribution of mesozooplankton and their grazing impacts on phytoplankton in the Amundsen Sea during the early austral summer from December 27, 2010 to January 13, 2011. Mesozooplankton followed a latitudinal distribution in relation to hydrographic and environmental features, with copepods dominating in the oceanic area and euphausiids dominating in the polynya. Greater Euphausia crystallorophias biomass in the polynya was associated with lower salinity and higher food concentration (chlorophyll a, choanoflagellates, and heterotrophic dinoflagellates). The grazing impact of three copepods (Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus, and Metridia gerlachei) on phytoplankton was low, with the consumption of 3 % of phytoplankton standing stock and about 4 % of daily primary production. Estimated daily carbon rations for each of the three copepods were also relatively low (<10 %), barely enough to cover metabolic demands. This suggests that copepods may rely on food other than phytoplankton and that much of the primary production is channeled through microzooplankton. Daily carbon rations for E. crystallorophias were high (up to 49 %) with the grazing impact accounting for 17 % of the phytoplankton biomass and 84 % of primary production. The presence of E. crystallorophias appears to be a critical factor regulating phytoplankton blooms and determining the fate of fixed carbon in the coastal polynyas of the Amundsen Sea.  相似文献

Data on primary production in the Bering Sea and adjacent Northern Pacific   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Primary production was measured with the aid of the radiocarbon method at 112 stations in the subarctic Pacific during the decline of the spring phytoplankton maximum in late June. The ranges of integrated production under 1 m2 were 0.17-4.13 g C day-1 in the Western basin, 0.12-6.70 g C day-1 in the shelf areas, 0.22-1.29 g C day-1 in the central Bering Sea and 0.25-1.48 g C day-1 in the Northern Pacific. Corresponding averages were 0.94 g C day-1 in the Western basin, 1.55 g C day-1 in the shelf areas, 0.72 g C day-1 in the central Bering Sea and 0.76 g C m-2 day-1 in the north Pacific. At stations with surface temperatures below 5-6C, where the spring diatom 'blooms' still proceded, the phytoplankton populations were accumulating in the upper 5-15 m layer, while at stations with higher surface temperatures (>6-8°C), the phytoplankton settled down to 20-40 m together with the deepening of the upper thermocline. The assimilation numbers of chlorophyll (Chl) and specific production coefficients in the Bering Sea are given, as well as the diurnal photosynthesis curves. The aspects of annual primary production in the Bering Sea and the features of phytoplankton ecology in the subarctic Pacific are discussed.   相似文献

In this paper, the outdoor production of Botryococcus braunii in pilot-scale panel reactors (0.4?m3) is studied under uncontrolled conditions at a location close to the Atacama Desert (Chile). Discontinuous experiments were performed on different dates to determine the feasibility of the culture and the influence of environmental conditions on the system yield. Data showed that solar radiation is a major parameter in determining system yield, the average irradiance inside the culture determining both the growth rate and biomass productivity. A maximum specific growth rate of 0.09?day?1 and biomass productivity of 0.02?g?L?1?day?1 (dry weight) were measured in discontinuous mode, at an average irradiance of 60?μE?m?2?s?1. With respect to lipids, a productivity of 2.5?mg?L?1?day?1 was obtained under favourable growth conditions; no accumulation of lipids at the stationary phase was observed. To confirm this behaviour, a semicontinuous culture was performed at 0.04?day?1 in a larger reactor (1?m3). In this experiment, the biomass concentration and productivity was 0.3?g?L?1 and 0.015?g?L?1?day?1, respectively. The lipid content and productivity was 15.6% and 2.4?mg?L?1?day?1, respectively, the mean average irradiance inside the reactor being 60?μmol photons?m?2?s?1. The light path of the reactor determines the light availability, thus determining also the biomass concentration and productivity of the reactor once the dilution rate is fixed. Experimentally, biomass productivity of 0.015?g?L?1?day?1 was determined for a light path of 0.15?m, but this can be increased by more than three times for a light path of 0.1?m. These data confirm that this alga can be produced outdoors in a secure form, the culture yield improving when optimal conditions are applied, the data reported here establishing the starting point for the development of the process.  相似文献

The present paper contains the results of our microbiological and biogeochemical investigations carried out during a series of expeditions to the White Sea in 2002–2006. The studies were conducted in the open part of the White Sea, as well as in the Onega, Dvina, and Kandalaksha bays. In August 2006, the photosynthetic productivity in the surface water layer was low (47–145 mg C m?2 day?1). Quantitative characteristics of microbial numbers and activity of the the key microbial processes occurring in the water column of the White Sea were explored. Over the 5-year period of observations, the total number of bacterial cells in the surface layer of the water column varied from 50 to 600 thousand cells ml?1. In August 2006, bacterioplankton production (BP) was estimated to be 0.26–3.3 μg C l?1 day?1; the P/B coefficient varied from 0.22 to 0.93. The suspended organic matter had a lighter isotope composition (from ?28.0 to ?30.5‰) due to the predominance of terrigenous organic matter delivered by the Northern Dvina waters. The interseasonal and interannual variation coefficients for phytoplankton production and BP numbers are compared. The bacterioplankton community of the White Sea’s deep water was found to be more stable than that of the surface layer. In the surface layer of bottom sediments, methane concentration was 0.2–5.2 μl dm?3; the rate of bacterial sulfate reduction was 18–260 μg S dm?3 day?1; and the rates of methane production and oxidation were 24–123 and 6–13 nl CH4 dm?3 day?1, respectively. We demonstrated that the rates of microbial processes of the carbon and sulfur cycles occurring in the sediments of the White Sea basin were low.  相似文献

The regular sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G.O. Sars, 1871), is a widespread epibenthic species in high-Arctic waters. However, little is known about its distribution, standing stock, population dynamics and production. In the northern Barents Sea, S. pallidus was recorded on seabed still photographs at 10 out of 11 stations in water depths of 80–360?m. Mean abundances along photographic transects of 150–300 m length ranged between <0.1 and 14.7?ind. m?2 yielding a grand average of 3.6?ind.?m?2. The small-scale distribution along the transects was patchy, with densities varying from nil to an overall maximum of 25.5 ind. m?2, and exhibited a significant relation to the number of stones present. Sea urchin test diameters, measured on scaled photographs, extended from 7 to 90?mm. Median values at single stations varied from 14 to 46?mm, showing a significant inverse relationship to water depth. Biomass, estimated by combining photographic abundances, size frequencies and a size-mass function established with trawled specimens, ranged between <0.1 and 3.0?g ash-free dry mass m?2, averaging about 1.0?g ash free dry mass m?2. An analysis of skeletal growth bands in genital plates was carried out with 143 trawled individuals ranging in test diameter (D) from 4 to 48?mm. Assuming these bands to represent annual growth marks, the ages of the specimens analysed ranged between 3 and 42 years. A von Bertalanffy function was fitted to size-at-age data to model individual growth pattern (D?=?102.3?mm, k?=?0.011 year?1, t0?=?0.633?year). The annual mortality rate Z of the population in the northern Barents Sea was estimated from a size-converted catch curve to be 0.08 year?1. Applying the weight-specific growth rate method, the average P/B ratio and the mean annual production of this population were estimated as 0.07 year?1 and 0.076?g AFDM m?2 year?1, respectively. In conclusion, S. pallidus is characterized by slow growth, low mortality, high longevity and low productivity. Because of its relatively high biomass, it is considered to contribute significantly to total benthic standing stock and carbon flux in the study area.  相似文献

The biomass productivity of Scenedesmus obliquus was investigated outdoors during all seasons in solar tracked flat panel photobioreactors (PBR) to evaluate key parameters for process optimization. CO2 was supplied by flue gas from an attached combined block heat and power plant. Waste heat from the power plant was used to heat the culture during winter. The parameters pH, CO2, and inorganic salt concentrations were automatically adjusted to nonlimiting levels. The optimum biomass concentration increased directly with the photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) from 3 to 5 g dry weight (DW)?L?1 for a low PAR of 10 mol photons m?2 day?1 and high PAR of 40–60 mol photons m?2 day?1, respectively. The annual average biomass yield (photosynthetic efficiency) was 0.4?±?0.5 g DW mol?1 photons. However, biomass yields of 1.5 g DW mol?1 photons close to the theoretical maximum were obtained at low PAR. The productivity (including the night biomass losses) ranged during all seasons from ?5 up to 30 g DW m?2 day?1 with a mean productivity of 9?±?7 g DW m?2 day?1. Low night temperatures of the culture medium and elevated day temperatures to the species-specific optimum increased the productivity. Thus, continuous regulation of the biomass concentration and the culture temperature with regard to the fluctuating weather conditions is essential for process optimization of outdoor microalgal production systems in temperate climates.  相似文献

Four strains of marine microalgae commonly used as live feeds in hatcheries (Isochrysis sp. T.ISO, Tetraselmis suecica, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Nannochloropsis sp.) were grown in a novel solid-state photobioreactor, the twin-layer system. Microalgae were immobilized by self adhesion to vertically oriented twin-layer modules which consisted of two different types of ultrathin layers, a macroporous source layer (glass fiber nonwoven) through which the culture medium was transported by gravity flow, and a microporous substrate layer (plain printing paper) which carried the algae on both surfaces of the source layer. This simple open cultivation system effectively separated the immobilized microalgae from the bulk of the growth medium and permitted prolonged cultivation of microalgae with average biomass yields of 10–15 g dry weight m?2 growth area after 14–25 days of cultivation. Algal biomass was harvested as fresh weight (with 72–84 % water content) without the need to pre-concentrate algae. No aeration or external CO2 supply was necessary, and due to the microporous substrate layer, no eukaryotic contaminations were observed during the experiment. All experiments were conducted in Germany under greenhouse conditions with natural sunlight. Small-scale growth experiments performed under the same conditions revealed that growth over most of the experimental period (24 days) was linear in all tested algae with growth rates (dry weight per square meter growth area) determined to be 0.6 g ?m?2?day?1 (Isochrysis), 0.8 g? m?2?day?1 (Nannochloropsis), 1.5 g ?m?2?day?1 (Tetraselmis), and 1.8 g? m?2?day?1 (Phaeodactylum). Due to its cost-effective construction and with further optimisation of design and productivity at technical scales, the twin-layer system may provide an attractive alternative to methods traditionally used to cultivate live microalgae.  相似文献

Semi-continuous algal cultivation was completed in outdoor flat-panel photobioreactors (panels) and open raceway ponds (raceways) from February 17 to May 7, 2015 for side-by-side comparison of areal productivities at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation in Mesa, AZ, USA. Experiments used two strains of Scenedesmus acutus (strains LB 0414 and LB 0424) to assess productivity, areal density, nutrient removal, and harvest volume across cultivation systems and algal strains. Panels showed an average biomass productivity of 19.0?±?0.6 g m?2 day?1 compared to 6.62?±?2.3 g m?2 day?1 for raceways. Photosynthetic efficiency ranged between 1.32 and 2.24 % for panels and between 0.30 and 0.68 % for raceways. Panels showed an average nitrogen consumption rate of 38.4?±?8.6 mg N L?1 day?1. Cultivation in raceways showed a consumption rate of 3.8?±?2.5 and 7.1?±?4.2 mg N L?1 day?1 for February/March and April/May, respectively, due to increase in biomass productivity. Excess nutrients were required to prevent a decrease in productivity. Daily biomass harvest volumes between 18 and 36 % from panels did not affect culture productivity, but density decreased with increased harvest volume. High cultivation temperatures above 30 °C caused strain LB 0414 to lyse and crash. Strain LB 0424 did not show any difference in biomass productivity when peak temperatures reached 34, 38, or 42 °C, but showed decreased productivity when the peak temperature during cultivation was 30 °C. Using algal strains with different temperature tolerances can generate increased annual biomass productivity.  相似文献

Marine benthic communities are effective indicators of environmental change. Yet in the Arctic, there are few empirical tests of how sustained climatic change may influence community structure. Northern Svalbard is influenced by both warm Atlantic and cold Arctic water masses, providing an opportunity to assess potential effects of long-term environmental changes by examining spatial variation in community structure. We examined benthic macroinfaunal communities and sediment pigments under Atlantic and Arctic water masses on the northern shelf and fjords of Svalbard. We report on infaunal biomass, abundance, species composition, and diversity at 10 stations spanning 79°–81°N and ranging in depth from 200 to 500?m. Benthic biomass averaged 128?g?WW?m?2 (48–253?g?WW?m?2), mean density was 3,635?ind.?m?2 (780–7,660?ind.?m?2), and species richness varied from 45 to 136?taxa?stn.?1. Abundance-based community structure clustered stations in groups related to water mass characteristics, with Atlantic and Arctic shelf stations being well distinguished from each other. Dominant taxa were different in Atlantic- and Arctic-influenced locations. Faunal biomass was highest in the Atlantic-influenced fjords, followed by Arctic fjords and Arctic shelf stations, with Atlantic shelf stations having the lowest biomass. Species richness and diversity were inversely related to biomass. Patterns in faunal biomass were strongly correlated with sedimentary pigments (R 2?=?0.74 for chl a and R 2?=?0.77 for phaeopigments), with large differences in sedimentary pigment concentration among stations. These relationships suggest that benthic fauna on the northern Svalbard shelf are food limited and dependent on predictable, albeit episodic, delivery of organic matter from the water column.  相似文献

The high cost of aeration needed to tumble culture macroalgae is a limiting factor for integration with land-based finfish culture. Toward reducing this electricity cost, we compared intermittent aeration (16 h on:8 h off) with continuous aeration (24 h on) on the productivity of two strains of Chondrus crispus (Basin Head and Charlesville) and Palmaria palmata from Atlantic Canada between May and June 2011. Algal fronds were cultured under a 16:8-h light/dark photoperiod in 50-L tanks supplied with finfish effluent (49 μmol L?1 of ammonium and 11 μmol L?1 of phosphate) at a mean water flow rate of 0.4 L min?1. Nitrogen (N) influx was 1.8 gN m?2 day?1, and phosphorus (P) influx was 0.9 gP m?2 day?1, with uptake rates ranging from 0.02 to 2.4 gN m?2 day?1 and ?0.2 to 0.4 gP m?2 day?1. On average, the macroalgae culture system (algae and biofilms) removed 1.0 gN m?2 day?1 (51.9 %). The growth of macroalgae (pooled across treatment and strain) ranged from 0.5 to 1.6 % day?1, which accounted for a yield of 2.2 to 5.4 g DW m?2 day?1. Switching off aeration at night improved the growth rate of Basin Head Chondrus by 146 % and had no effect on growth rate or nitrogen and carbon removal by P. palmata and Charlesville Chondrus. Growth and yield of Basin Head Chondrus under intermittent aeration were over two times greater than both Charlesville Chondrus treatments.  相似文献

The southern Barents Sea is considered to be the most productive area in the Arctic Ocean; however, there are no assessments of daily production rates in the coastal waters. During the summer and autumn of 2007, we investigated the variation of mesozooplankton community structure relative to environmental conditions at 12 coastal stations. Copepods dominated the total zooplankton biomass and abundance during both periods. Diversity indices and the total biomass of zooplankton communities differed significantly between the two seasons. Cluster analyses revealed two distinct groups of stations which were associated with Ura Bay and the adjacent open sea, respectively. Daily production rates of the copepod species examined were calculated using three methods based on: (1) a temperature-dependent equation and (2) two multiple regressions that consider temperature, body weight, and chlorophyll a concentration. Significant seasonal differences for daily production rates were found using all three model equations (p?<?0.05): 358?±?188–1,775?±?791 versus 198?±?85–1,584?±?559?μg?dry?mass?m?3?day?1. Results of principal components analyses demonstrated that the abundance and biomass of herbivorous species were related to variation in chlorophyll a concentration while the abundance and biomass of other species (omnivorous copepods and Ctenophora) were related mainly with water temperature and salinity. Mesozooplankton biomass was higher during this study relative to previous studies. Computed copepod production rates were higher compared with other Arctic seas confirming a high productive potential of the coastal southern Barents Sea.  相似文献

A study of phytoplankton productivity and related parameters was carried out in two fringing and barrier reef systems around Moorea island (Tiahura lagoon) and Tahiti (Vairao lagoon), Society Islands, during July–August 1974.In Tiahura lagoon, which is the narrower and the shallower, phytoplankton standing crop and production are extremely low; photosynthetic assimilation, as measured in situ by the 14C method, ranges from 4 to 27 mg C m?2 day?1, presumably less than in the impoverished open ocean, but it is surprisingly high at a station just outside the barrier reef (645 mg C m?2 day?1) as the result of some island mass effect. As compared to the latter station, the lagoon shows a ten-times increase in particle content and glucose uptake, and a higher percentage of decomposition products of plant pigments. These data support the concept that, in such environments where benthic primary producers prevail, phytoplankton may have lost its ‘usual’ rôle in the aquatic food web.Vairao lagoon, a deeper and wider one, subjected to a greater extent to land fertilization, is more productive (103–420 mg C m?2 day?1). Considering this difference, as well as the considerable range of phytoplankton production in coral reef areas of the world, the need for a trophic classification of such ecosystems is emphasized.  相似文献

Globally, hypoxic areas (<63?mmol O2 m?3) in coastal waters are increasing in number and spatial extent. One of the largest coastal hypoxic regions has been observed during the summer in the bottom-water of the Louisiana continental shelf. The shelf receives the sediments, organic matter, and nutrients exported from the Mississippi River watershed, and much of this material is ultimately deposited to the sea floor. Hence, quantifying the rates of sediment-water dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), oxygen (O2), and nutrient fluxes is important for understanding how these processes relate to the development and maintenance of hypoxia. In this study, the sediment-water fluxes of DIC, O2, nutrients, and N2 (denitrification) were measured on the Louisiana shelf during six cruises from 2005 to 2007. On each cruise, three to four sites were occupied in or directly adjacent to the region of the shelf that experiences hypoxia. DIC fluxes, a proxy for total sediment respiration, ranged from 7.9 to 21.4?mmol?m?2 day?1 but did not vary significantly either spatially or as a function of bottom-water O2 concentration. Overall, sediment respiration and nutrient flux rates were small in comparison to water-column respiration and phytoplankton nutrient demand. Nitrate fluxes were correlated with bottom-water O2 concentrations (r?=?0.69), and there was evidence that decreasing O2 concentrations inhibited coupled nitrification-denitrification. Denitrification rates averaged 1.4?mmol?N?m?2 day?1. Scaled to the area of the shelf, the denitrification sink represented approximately 39% of the N load from the Mississippi River watershed. The sediment-water fluxes reported from this study add substantial information on the spatial and temporal patterns in carbon, O2, and nutrient cycling available for the Louisiana continental shelf and, thus, improve the understanding of this system.  相似文献

Weekly sampling was carried out in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia throughout the winter of 1975–1976. The surface water column was characterized by exposure to low solar radiation energy (<150 g cal·cm?2 · day?1), slight stratification with occasional vertical mixing, and abundant algal nutrients. Phytoplankton were mostly distributed above 5 m in the water column, with a fairly low biomass averaging <1 μgchla·1?1. Dominant phytoplankton organisms were nanoflagellates occasionally accompanied by dinoflagellates as the second dominant. Centric diatoms, which were dominant in the blooms, were always present but less than a few percentage of the total phytoplankton biomass. Daily photosynthetic productivity was exclusively limited by available radiant energy. Low solar radiation and occasional mixing of the surface zone prohibited the centric diatoms from becoming dominant.  相似文献

The productivity of three plant communities differeing in moisture conditions was studied in the river basin of the Dyje near the village of Lan?hot (Southern Moravia). The communities were as follows:Serratuleto-Festucetum commutatae Balátová-Tulá?ková 1963,Gratiola officinalis—Carex praecox-suzae subass.Galium boreale Balátová-Tulá?ková 1963, andGratiola officinalis—Carex praecox-suzae subass.Rorippa silvestris Balátová-Tulá?ková 1963. The associationGratiola officinalis—Carex praecox-suzae subass.Galium boreale appeared as the most productive one, its biomass maximum W=400 g . m?2 and the maximum R=0.042 g . g?1 . day?1 C=4.84 g . m?2 . day?1. Owing to extreme moisture conditions in the year 1966, the associationSerratuleto-Festucetum commutatae was also highly productive, as it reached the following maximum of dry matter production: 240 g . m?2, R=0.0388g . g?1 . day?1 C=4.64 g . m?2 . day?1. The maximum value of dry matter in the associationGratiola officinalis—Carex praecox-suzae subass.Rorippa silvestris was 220 g.m?2. Changes in dry matter production of shoots were evaluated statistically. The dry matter in the underground parts of plants in 1 square metre, collected from the 0–25 cm layer varied from 1,000 to 2,000 g.m?2. Together with records of the increasing dry matter in the shoots the author kept records of the properties of dead material.  相似文献

Upper limits of photosynthetic productivity and problems of scaling   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Some 1,370 W m?2 of light energy reaches the outer atmosphere of earth and on average only 240 W m?2 reaches the earth’s surface. Only a fraction of this is used to fix CO2 through photosynthesis, and efficiencies ranging from 0.1?8% for total irradiance have been reported. The theoretical maximum quantum efficiency of carbon fixation is 0.125 mol C (mol quanta)?1 which relates to a maximum productivity of about 12 g C m?2 day?1 or 29.8 g(dw) m?2 day?1. This could increase to a maximum of 200 g(dw) m?2 day?1 in intermittent light of high frequencies, which is on average eight times higher than the average measured under field conditions where rates approaching 25 g(dw) m?2 day?1 are considered high. Several possibilities exist for achieving higher yields and photosynthetic efficiencies, such as limiting the antennae sizes and pulsing light at frequencies equivalent to electron turnover in the electron transport chains of photosynthesis. Scaling from laboratory experimental conditions to large commercial photobioreactors is a major stumbling block and may be the single most important factor responsible for the overall low reported areal production rates.  相似文献

Ulva spp. are used in a wide range of commercial applications, including bioremediation, food, bioenergy, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. The sulfated polysaccharide ulvan obtained from Ulva spp. is of interest for triggering plant defenses against disease. However, the cultivation of Ulva spp. is still in its infancy. This study verified the feasibility of cultivating Ulva lactuca and Ulva flexuosa at two sites on the tropical Brazilian coast. We investigated the following: (a) methods to induce sporulation, (b) comparison of seeding ropes inoculated in vitro versus seeding at sea over 40 days, (c) production and harvest cycles at 15 and 30 days, (d) growth productivity of U. flexuosa at sea and in outdoor tanks, and (e) comparison of ulvan yields from biomass cultivated in tanks and the sea. High nutrient treatment was the most efficient method to induce sporulation (7,540?±?3,133 spores m?1). Sea-based cultivation of U. flexuosa was only successful at one site. Seeding of ropes in vitro was more efficient than seeding at sea (0.31?±?0.20 g m?2 day?1), and 15-day harvest cycles were most efficient (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1; 0.46?±?0.11 g m?2 day?1). Despite differences in plant growth in tanks (27.9?±?4.4 % day?1) and at sea (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1), the dry biomass and ulvan yields (17.7?±?5.0 %) did not differ between these systems. Cultivation of U. flexuosa was feasible at sea using in vitro seeding with a production cycle of 15 days in Brazilian tropical waters and tanks with high irradiance and enriched seawater.  相似文献

The biomass, productivity (14C), and photosynthetic response to light and temperature of eelgrass, Zostera marina L. and its epiphytes was measured in a shallow estuarine system near Beaufort, North Carolina, during 1974. The maximum of the biomass (above-ground) was measured in March; this was followed by a general decline throughout the rest of the year. The average biomass was 105.0 g dry wt m?2; 80.3 g dry wt m?2 was eelgrass and 24.7 g dry wt m?2 was epiphytes. The productivity of eelgrass averaged 0.88 mg C g?1 h?1 which was similar to that of the epiphytes, 0.65 mg C g?1 h?1. Eelgrass and epiphyte productivity was low during the spring and early summer, gave a maximum during late summer and fall, and declined during the winter; this progression was probably due to environmental factors associated with tidal heights. On an areal basis, the average annual productivity was 0.9 g C m?2 day?1 for eelgrass and 0.2 g C m?2 day?1 for the epiphytes. Rates of photosynthesis of both eelgrass and epiphytes increased with increasing temperature to an asymptotic value at which the system was light saturated. Both eelgrass and epiphytes had a temperature optimum of < 29 °C. A negative response to higher temperatures was also reflected in biomass measurements which showed the destruction of eelgrass with increasing summer temperatures. The data suggest that the primary productivity cycles of macrophytes and epiphytes are closely interrelated.  相似文献

Standing crop, density and leaf growth rate of Heterozostera tasmanica (Martens ex Aschers.) den Hartog along with light, temperature, nutrient and sediment characteristics were determined monthly for fifteen months at three study sites in Western Port and one site in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia. Erect vegetative stems of H. tasmanica were frequently branched, were present throughout the year and accounted for 25–60% of the above-sediment biomass, with the stem proportion higher during winter than summer. At three of the four sites there was a unimodal seasonal pattern in which minimum leaf standing crop (27–61 g dry wt. m?2), density (600–2000 leaf cluster m?2) and leaf productivity (0.34–0.77 g dry wt. m?2 day?1) generally occurred during winter (June–August) and maximum leaf standing crop (105–173 g dry wt. m?2), density (2700–5000 leaf cluster m?2) and leaf productivity (2.6–4.2 g dry wt. m?2 day?1) occurred during summer (December–February). A bimodal seasonal pattern with minimum standing crop and density during midsummer occurred at one site. This anomalous seasonal pattern may be due to exposure and desiccation stress during spring low tides. At the site receiving the lowest irradiance, standing crop, density and annual leaf production also were lowest, but length and width of leaves, shoot height and leaf growth rate per leaf cluster were the highest of the four study sites. On average, each leaf cluster at any one of the study sites produced 30–31 leaves per year with mean leaf turnover rates of 1.3–1.7% day?1. Annual leaf production of H. tasmanica ranged from 410 to 640 g dry wt.m?2 at the four sites.  相似文献

Isochrysis is a genus of marine unicellular microalgae that produces docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6), a very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) of significant health and nutritional value. Mass cultivation of Isochrysis for DHA production for human consumption has not been established due to disappointing low DHA productivity obtained from commonly used Isochrysis strains. In this study, 19 natural Isochrysis strains were screened for DHA yields and the results showed that the cellular DHA content ranged from 6.8 to 17.0 % of total fatty acids with the highest DHA content occurring in the exponential growth phase. Isochrysis galbana #153180 exhibited the greatest DHA production potential and was selected for further investigation. The effects of different light intensities, forms, and concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and salinity on growth and DHA production of I. galbana #153180 were studied in a bubble column photobioreactor (PBR). Under favorable culture conditions, I. galbana #153180 contained DHA up to 17.5 % of total fatty acids or 1.7 % of cell dry weight. I. galbana #153180 was further tested in outdoor flat-plate PBRs varying in light path length, starting cell density (SCD), and culture mode (batch versus semicontinuous). When optimized, record high biomass and DHA productivity of I. galbana #153180 of 0.72 g L?1?day?1 and 13.6 mg?L?1?day?1, or 26.4 g?m?2?day?1 and 547.7 mg?m?2?day?1, respectively, were obtained, suggesting that I. galbana #153180 may be a desirable strain for commercial production of DHA.  相似文献
