Abstract. Our results suggest that freshwater pulmonates like Lymnaea stagnalis, Radix peregra, Physa fontinalis , and Planorbarius corneus have inherited from their terrestrial ancestors eyes with a spherical, immobile lens with fixed focal-length optics. Unable to change the dioptric apparatus to form an image under water, modifications to the retina had to occur if sharp vision was required. Computer-assisted calculations and 3-D eye reconstructions demonstrate that the photoreceptors in the deeper, ventral pit are in a position to perceive focused images under water. Vision in air, however, would favour photoreceptive cells located in the shallower, dorsal pit. On the basis of histological, ethological, and optical comparisons, we conclude that the eyes in L. stagnalis and R. peregra , species that are known to escape and seek temporary refuge above the water surface, are well adapted to function in water as well as air, but that the eyes in P. fontinalis and Pl. corneus are less modified from those of their terrestrial ancestors. We also conclude that good resolving power may be of greater importance in the aquatic pulmonates than the terrestrial species, since the former have to locate thin, vertical stems of reeds and sedges to ascend in order to reach the surface to breathe.  相似文献

The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is used as a commercial biological control agent of slugs in the UK. Although it is known to affect other terrestrial mollusc species, its effects on freshwater molluscs are not known. The present study investigated the effects of P. hermaphrodita on the survival of juvenile Lymnaea stagnalis and Physa fontinalis, two common freshwater snails, at 'spray tank' concentration and a 50% diluted 'spray tank' concentration over a 14-day period. Survival of L. stagnalis was significantly reduced at both application levels but P. fontinalis suffered no mortalities over the experimental period. The possible differential mechanisms of pathology between the two host species are discussed.  相似文献

The toxicity of cadmium to a population of Lymnaea peregra and L. stagnalis naturally infected with a range of digeneans and collected from a number of sites in the lower Thames Valley, UK was investigated. Lymnaeid snails were exposed to 100 microg l-1 cadmium and the effects on host survival and emergence of cercariae recorded. Overwintered L. peregra, but not L. stagnalis, showed significantly reduced survival compared to seasonally infected snails, i.e. snails which have acquired an infection during the spring or summer. A significant increase in survival with increasing snail size was demonstrated for L. stagnalis and for seasonally infected L. peregra only. Only L. stagnalis infected with Diplostomum spathaceum and L. peregra infected individually with D. spathaceum, Sanguinicola inermis, Echinoparyphium recurvatum and Notocotylus attenuatus demonstrated a significantly reduced survival compared to laboratory-bred controls. The exposure of L. stagnalis to cadmium resulted in a significant reduction in the emergence of D. spathaceum over a 5-day period but cadmium-exposed L. peregra showed no difference in the emergence of E. recurvatum cercariae over a 3-day exposure period. The mechanisms and importance of metal toxicity to snail-digenean interactions are discussed.  相似文献

The toxicity of cadmium, zinc and Cd/Zn mixtures to the transmission of Echinoparyphium recurvatum (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) cercariae into the snail second intermediate hosts was investigated at concentrations ranging from 100 microg l-1 to 10 000 microg l-1 in both soft and hard water. A differential response in the infectivity of metal-exposed cercariae into Lymnaea peregra and Physa fontinalis was demonstrated which was dependent on the snail species being infected. Exposure of L. peregra, P. fontinalis, and L. stagnalis to heavy metals caused a differing susceptibility to E. recurvatum cercariae depending on the snail species being exposed. The mechanism and effects of metal toxicity, together with the importance of the parasite/host strain on cercarial transmission are discussed.  相似文献

Trait compensation occurs when mechanically independent adaptations are negatively correlated. Here, we report the first study to demonstrate trait compensation in predator-defence adaptations across several species. Freshwater pulmonate snails exposed experimentally to predation chemical cues from fishes and crushed conspecifics showed clear interspecific differences in their behavioural avoidance responses, which were negatively correlated with shell crush resistance. The type of avoidance response varied between species: thin-shelled species (Lymnaea stagnalis and Physa fontinalis) moved to the water-line or out of the water, while those with thick shells moved under cover or showed a mixed response. There were also intraspecific size-linked differences, with an ontogenetic increase in shell strength accompanied by a decrease in behavioural avoidance. Such trait compensation in response to predation has important implications for interspecific interactions and food-web dynamics.  相似文献

Snails of the genus Lymnaea are morphologically variable and their taxonomy is unclear. In particular, the forms peregra and ovata , distinguished by shell shape, are often considered variants of the same species, L. peregra. We studied a rare situation in a Swiss mountain lake where both forms are sympatric. First, we found that the forms shows complete separation for a number of allozymes. Second, we examined the response of the two snail forms to infection by the trematode Diplostomum phoxini . For the ovata form, there was a transitory, 10% increase in the growth of infected snails compared to uninfected controls. The peregra form showed no gigantism and had higher parasite-induced mortality. Third, we assessed differences between the forms in reproduction under different environmental conditions. Density negatively influenced egg production to the same degree in both forms. However, decreasing water levels, characteristic of part of the lake studied, led to a 30% decrease in egg production for the ovata form, but only a 10% decrease for the peregra form. These differences are discussed in relation to the microdistributions of the snails in the lake and we conclude that the two forms are almost certainly separate species.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The behavioural responses of six species of British freshwater gastropods to chemical gradients of short chain carboxylic acids (C-2 to C-5, C-8) and maltose were investigated by means of diffusion olfactometers.
2. The species were ranked as follows on the basis of the number of significant behavioural responses to the test chemicals: Lymnaea peregra > Planorbis contortus > Physa fontinalis > Planorbis planorbis > Bithynia tentaculata > Planorbis vortex. These differences were not a result of differences in activity but reflect real differences in ehemoreception.
3. Propanoate (C-3) was a significant attractant or arrestant to five snail species, C-4, C-8 and maltose to four species and C-5 to three species. Acetate (C-2) was a significant attractant to L. peregra and P. fontinalis but it was the only acid to act as a repellent, to P. planorbis and B. tentaculata.
4. Lymnaea peregra continued to respond to repeated butanoate application. Response levels could be enhanced by increasing concentration (minimum thresholds 10-4M to 10−5 M), pH (above 6) and food deprivation.
5. The ecological relevance of the results are discussed with particular reference to the distributional patterns of the chemicals and snails and the feeding niches of the latter.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to study the effect of age and lifespan on the infection success of Diplostomum spathaceum miracidia. Specimens of Lymnaea peregra and L. stagnalis were individually exposed to single miracidia of D. spathaceum of different ages under conditions of constant illumination at 20 degrees C. The life-span of the free-swimming miracidium of D. spathaceum is 24 h at 20 degrees C. It was observed that as the miracidium ages, its ability to successfully infect snails declines rapidly.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among higher clades of pulmonate gastropods are reconstructed based on a data set including one nuclear marker (complete ribosomal 18S) and two mitochondrial markers (partial ribosomal 16S and Cytochrome oxidase I) for a total of 96 species. Sequences for 66 of these species are new to science, with a special emphasis on sampling the Ellobiidae, Onchidiidae, and Veronicellidae. Important results include the monophyly of Systellommatophora (Onchidiidae and Veronicellidae) as well as the monophyly of Ellobiidae (including Trimusculus, Otina, and Smeagol). Relationships within Ellobiidae, Onchidiidae, and Veronicellidae are evaluated here for the first time using molecular data. Present results are compared with those from the recent literature, and the current knowledge of phylogenetic relationships among pulmonate gastropods is reviewed: despite many efforts, deep nodes are still uncertain. Identification uncertainties about early fossils of pulmonates are reviewed. Impacts of those phylogenetic and fossil record uncertainties on our understanding of the macro-evolutionary history of pulmonates, especially transitions between aquatic and terrestrial habitats, are discussed.  相似文献

A survey of the larval stages (cercariae and metacercariae) of trematodes (Digenea) found in planorbid snails in Central Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, south-east Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Slovak Republic) is presented based on a study of 7,628 snails of 12 species examined between 1998-2006. A total of 34 trematode larval stages, comprising cercariae of 28 species and metacercariae of seven species (one species occurred both as cercaria and metacercaria) of nine families were found in 898 (11.5%) snails of eight species. The dominant cercariae were those belonging to the Rubenstrema exasperatum (Rudolphi, 1819)/Neoglyphe locellus (Kossack, 1910) species complex, Tylodelphys excavata (Rudolphi, 1803) and Echinostoma spiniferum (La Valette, 1855) sensu Nasincová (1992), all from Planorbarius corneus (Linnaeus). Almost the same spectrum of cercariae of the families Echinostomatidae, Plagiorchiidae and Omphalometridae was found in the present study as in previous reports; however, a considerably lower spectrum of cercariae of the families Diplostomidae and Strigeidae was recorded. The most frequent metacercariae were those of Echinoparyphium aconiatum Dietz, 1909, Neoglyphe locellus and Moliniella anceps (Molin, 1859), all occurring mainly in P. corneus. The most heavily infected snail species was P. corneus, followed by Planorbis planorbis (Linnaeus) and Segmentina nitida (Müller). The widest spectrum of trematode species was found in P. planorbis and P. corneus. Forty-two cercariae identified to the species level belonging to 15 families, plus an additional 43 taxa recorded under generic or provisional names, were reported from 11 species of planorbids in previous studies carried out in Central Europe. However, the actual number of trematode species occurring in the planorbid snails is probably much lower, because many, if not most, larval stages reported under provisional names or unidentified to the species level may be conspecific with identified adult forms. A key to the cercariae and metacercariae recorded from planorbids in Central Europe, together with illustrations of those species encountered most frequently in the field, is provided to facilitate identification.  相似文献

Pulmonate snails occupy a wide range of marine, estuarine, freshwater and terrestrial environments. Non-terrestrial forms are supposed to be basal in pulmonate evolution but the group's phylogeny is not well resolved either morphologically or on the basis of available DNA sequence data. The lack of a robust phylogeny makes it difficult to understand character polarization and habitat transformation in pulmonates. We have investigated pulmonate relationships using 27 new sequences of 28S rRNA from pulmonates and outgroups, augmented with data from GenBank. The complete alignments comprised about 3.8kb. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of alignments generated under different assumptions are reported. Complete alignments appear to have a degree of substitution saturation so where there is conflict between hypothesised relationships more weight is given to analyses where regions of random similarity are excluded and which are not affected by this complication. Monophyly of the five main pulmonate groups was robustly supported in almost all analyses. The marine group Amphiboloidea and the freshwater Glacidorbidae are the most basal. The remaining pulmonates (Siphonariidae, Hygrophila and Eupulmonata) form a moderately-supported monophyletic group in all analyses bar one probably affected by saturation of substitutions. Siphonariidae, a predominantly marine and intertidal family, and Eupulmonata (mainly terrestrial with marine, estuarine and freshwater species) form a strongly supported clade that is the sister group to Hygrophila (freshwater). Multiple colonizations of freshwater and terrestrial habitats by pulmonate snails are suggested. No analyses strongly support the possibility of habitat reversions. The colonizations of freshwater by Hygrophila and of land by Stylommatophora were apparently phylogenetically independent although it cannot yet be excluded that there were transient terrestrial phases in the history of the former group or freshwater phases in the latter.  相似文献

Like all other animal species, terrestrial pulmonate snails require Cu as an essential trace element. On the other hand, elevated amounts of Cu can exert toxic effects on snails. The homeostatic regulation of Cu must therefore be a pivotal goal of terrestrial pulmonates to survive. Upon administration of Cu, snails accumulate the metal nearly equally in most of their organs. Quantitative studies in connection with HPLC and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry reveal that a certain fraction of Cu in snails is bound to a Cu-metallothionein (Cu-MT) isoform that occurs in most organs at constant concentrations, irrespective of whether the animals had been exposed to physiological or elevated amounts of Cu. In situ hybridization demonstrates that at the cellular level, the Cu-binding MT isoform is exclusively expressed in the so-called pore cells (or rhogocytes), which can be found in all major snail organs. The number of pore cells with Cu-MT mRNA reaction products remains unaffected by Cu exposure. Rhogocytes also are major storage sites of Cu in a granular form, the metal quickly entering the snail tissues upon elevated exposure. The number of rhogocytes with granular Cu precipitations strongly increases upon Cu administration via food. Thus, whereas Cu-MT in the rhogocytes represents a stable pool of Cu that apparently serves physiological tasks, the granular Cu precipitations form a second, quickly inducible, and more easily available pool of the metal that serves Cu regulation by responding to superphysiological metal exposure.  相似文献

Body size is expected to affect the mating behaviour and mating patterns of simultaneous hermaphrodites, because it can influence fecundity, mate choice and mechanical constraints to mating. However, there is a lack of detailed research on size‐dependent mating patterns in hermaphroditic species, including aquatic pulmonates. We investigated mating patterns and mating success in the simultaneous hermaphroditic pond snail Radix lagotis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata). We found that fecundity increased with body size and we observed a strong pattern of size‐assortative mating across two breeding seasons. Sperm donors were more likely to inseminate large snails than small snails, and pairings between two large individuals were more likely to result in successful copulations than pairings of two small individuals or two individuals of differing sizes. Other possible explanations (mechanical constraint) for these patterns are also discussed.  相似文献

The effects of water temperature on the ability of Diplostomum spathaceum miracida to infect and establish patent infections in Lymnaea peregra and L. stagnalis were investigated. Snails were infected over a range of temperatures (6-20 degrees C) and kept thereafter at 20 degrees C or were infected at 20 degrees C and kept at either 14, 20, or 25 degrees C. Infection success was determined after 8 weeks by either observing cercarial shedding or examining snail viscera for sporocysts. The establishment of miracidia declined at lower water temperatures despite maintenance for 8 weeks at 20 degrees C while exposure of snails to miracidia at 20 degrees C and maintenance at different temperatures had little apparent effect. Infection success under these conditions was related more to the numbers of miracidia to which the snails were exposed. However, under this latter experimental regime, the time taken for the infection to become patent clearly depended upon maintenance temperature.  相似文献

1. Predation incurs high fitness costs in aquatic organisms either through direct consumption or through avoidance responses that reduce time for activities such as feeding and reproduction. Hence, avoidance responses of aquatic organisms should vary to match closely the predation threat in their environment.
2. The freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis occurs in a variety of environments which vary in the presence or absence of predatory fish. We used naïve snails reared from six populations of this species experiencing different predator regimes (three co-occurring with molluscivorous fish and three without) to assess whether populations differed in the type and degree of their avoidance behaviours. Innate behavioural responses to four treatments (control, conspecific alarm cues, fish kairomones and fish kairomones paired with alarm cue) were compared in laboratory trials.
3. The primary anti-predator behaviour of L. stagnalis in response to fish kairomones was to crawl out of the water rather than seek refuge under water. This response was strongest when fish kairomones were paired with alarm cues, and varied depending on population origin; snails reared from populations co-occurring with predatory fish showed a stronger response than those raised from populations not experiencing such predators. In addition, populations co-occurring with predatory fish responded to the fish kairomones presented alone.
4. Our findings suggest that the degree of innate anti-predator behaviour shown by L. stagnalis , in terms of both the level of risk to which it responds and the degree of response, varies depending on the predator regime experienced by field populations. Together with previous work on cue association, this demonstrates that this gastropod is able to match its avoidance behaviour very closely to short and long term predation threats within its habitat.  相似文献

Abstract

Data are presented on the life cycles of eight species of Neolimnia, an endemic New Zealand genus of snail-killing flies. Habitats, geographical distributions, biological features of adults and immature stages, including adult and larval behaviour and feeding habits, and phenology are discussed. Larvae of subgenus Pseudolimnia live in aquatic environments; those of N. (P.) repo, N. (P.) sigma, and N. (P.) ura prey on aquatic pulmonate snails, but those of N. (P.) tranquilla prey on aquatic prosobranch snails. Larvae of Neolimnia (Neolimnia) castanea, N. (N.) irrorata, N. (N.) obscura, and N. (N.) striata live in terrestrial environments, and apparently prey overtly on terrestrial snails in nature, but will also attack aquatic snails in laboratory rearings.  相似文献

The aquatic and terrestrial realms differ in many physical properties that not only require specific physiological adaptations but also cause differences in dispersal options. We thus expect that life-history traits related to dispersal and colonization are under selection pressure because freshwater habitats are more isolated and thus more difficult to reach. We compared traits from European databases of three taxonomic groups along the passive–active dispersal gradient: plants (Plantes), snails (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Prosobranchia et Pulmonata) and hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), all of which have both terrestrial and freshwater species (plants and snails) or early life stages (hoverflies). Aquatic taxa seem to be more successful long-distance dispersers than are terrestrial taxa. Our analysis also revealed lower numbers of seeds or eggs produced in the aquatic habitats. However, aquatic taxa often allocate resources to offspring guarding (vegetative propagules in plants, egg capsules in snails) and breeding-site selection (syrphids). Colonization of the aquatic realm is reinforced by increases in life span (plants), clonal spread (plants), shorter generation times (snails), selfing ability (marginal effect in pulmonate snails) or paedogenesis (two incidences in hoverflies, needs further studies). Probably, the variety of strategies reflects the different evolutionary backgrounds that elicit different combinations of trade-offs, but all traits also might increase invasibility of species.  相似文献

The excretory systems of terrestrial prosobranch snails of the family Cyclophoridae, collected in Jamaica, Costa Rica and South Africa, have been examined physiologically and as regards their gross and fine structure. The process of urine formation commences in the heart, where fluid is filtered across the wall of the ventricle. Filtration through the auricular wall is believed to be negligible. The kidney, which contains three types of cell, modifies the composition of the filtrate. One type of resorptive cell, characterized by basal infoldings associated with mitochondria, takes up salts. Another type, with basal subcellular spaces, may be responsible for taking up water. The third type of cell is secretory, producing concretions of uric acid and phospholipid which are liberated into the kidney lumen when the cell degenerates.
The rate and mechanism of urine production have been investigated using injections of inulin. The filtration rate at 25°C is 0.5 μl/g/min, and in 100% R.H. the average rate of urine production is 0–39 μl/g/min.
An accessory excretory organ has been developed from the hypobranchial gland of aquatic forms. It is composed of groups of subepithelial tubular glands opening into the mantle cavity by one or a series of pores, and secreting purines, phospholipids and mucus. There is evidence that this organ becomes progressively more complex in forms occupying drier habitats.
The systems of excretion and osmoregulation in the Cyclophoridae are considered to be very similar to those in their aquatic relatives, the Viviparidae and Ampullariidae. Certainly the cyclophorids are not as well adapted to a terrestrial life as are the Pulmonata, and in many respects they may be considered "aquatic" snails living on land.  相似文献

A study of the freshwater gastropods in the Saint Lawrence river near Montreal was undertaken to characterize the populations living in the benthos and on the vegetation, and to define the effects of a deterioration of water quality.Ninety-eight samples, collected simultaneously from the benthos and on macrophytes, were expressed as the logarithm of each species' relative abundance. WPGMA clustering, principal coordinates and discriminant analysis were used to describe and characterize differences between samples. Diversity was also computed to show the transformations of population structure due to differences in pollution levels.Prosobranch snails predominated in benthic populations while pulmonates characterized vegetation. A decrease in the number of species was the characteristic response to increasing pollution levels upon both types of substrates. High hydrocarbon levels were related to a decrease in the diversity of snail populations on the vegetation only.Predominance of prosobranchs in the benthos and pulmonates on the vegetation could be explained by a differential dependence of those two groups of snails on the aquatic medium, and by considering modes of nutrition. Sporadic oil spills affected the snail populations living on macrophytes.
