Intensity of mineralization processes in mountain lakes in NW Slovenia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The potential and actual intensity of mineralization in sediments of fourteen mountain lakes and one subalpine lake in NW Slovenia have been measured. Potential mineralization was measured as the intensity of the electron transport system (ETS) activity of microzoobenthos and microbial communities and the actual mineralization as the oxygen consumption of respiration processes, both measured at a standard temperature of 20°C. The lakes are of different trophic levels and some exhibit seasonal anoxia. All but one are hardwater lakes. Two layers of sediment cores from the deepest point of the lakes were analysed: a surface layer and one below 15 cm. Significant differences among different lakes in their ETS activity and oxygen consumption in the surface and lower layers of sediment were observed. ETS activities and oxygen consumption rates were higher in the surface layers of all the lakes. From the three investigated deterministic factors (temperature, lake depth and total phosphorus in the water column) on sedimentary metabolism ETS activity in the surface layer correlated significantly with total phosphorus and lake depth, but oxygen consumption rate showed a significant correlation only with total phosphorus. The relationship between oxygen consumption and ETS activity was also investigated. ETS activities correlated with oxygen consumption rates according to the equation of logR = 0.421* logETS + 0.898 (r=0.82; n=30; p<0.001). The R/ETS ratio was lower at the sediment surface than in the layers deeper than 15 cm. It is concluded that ETS activity and oxygen consumption are good indicators of the intensity of the metabolic activity and mineralization in lake sediments. As the characteristics of lakes and some environmental factors influence the ETS activity and the oxygen consumption differently, the same R/ETS ratio should not be used as conversion factor in calculations for different lakes.  相似文献

Light is regarded a key environmental cue influencing biological, physiological, and behavioral characteristics in insects. We compared the development, reproduction, locomotion, and predation ability of the predatory ladybird Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) under various photoperiods, light intensities, and light wavelengths. The results indicated long daylight, high light intensity, and particular colors light (blue, green, and yellow) could benefit H. variegata especially in shortening the period of immature development, increasing mating frequency (shorter mating and pre‐oviposition periods), higher fecundity, and a higher proportion of eggs hatched. Average locomotion speed and prey consumption rate of H. variegata increased with prolonged day length and increased light intensity. However, very high intensity of light could inhibit predation rates. Furthermore, green and yellow wavelength conditions increased locomotion speed of H. variegata, and the number of prey consumed increased with increased wavelength. The present study not only revealed significant influences of light conditions on the development and fertility of H. variegata, it also provided sufficient empirical data to improve the efficiency of mass rearing and field releases of this predatory ladybird by regulation of light conditions during biological control applications.  相似文献

Individual pairs of overwintered adult apple blossom weevils, Anthonomus pomorum (L.), confined with apple twigs under different ambient temperatures in the laboratory and on apple trees in the field, were observed through day and night for their spring activities. Flight behavior in relation to ambient temperature was also investigated under laboratory conditions using flight stands. Both sexes displayed predominantly nocturnal behavior patterns in both the laboratory and the field. Feeding, crawling, and mating activities increased following sunset in the field or onset of scotophase in the laboratory while resting occurred most frequently during daylight hours. Results of the laboratory experiments showed that temperature affected significantly the activity patterns. The diel pattern of activities became less distinctive at higher temperatures (above 15°C), and total activities in crawling, feeding, and mating were suppressed significantly at lower temperatures (below 5°C). Over 97% of the test weevils initiated take-off response from flight stands at 20°C within the 30 min trial period; however, flight initiation rarely occurred at temperatures 12°C or below. Overall, results of the laboratory and field experiments indicate that A. pomorum is a remarkably cold-adapted insect with ability to crawl, feed, and mate at a few degrees above freezing, a physiological attribute necessary for the exploitation of early stages of apple bud development in the cold early spring.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated growth responses of the green alga Scenedesmus and the cyanobacterium Synechococcus supplied with inorganic nitrogen in different ways. A competitive situation in which nitrogen was limiting was created in mixed cultures as well as in cultures growing in the same vessel but separated by a permeable dialysis membrane. Supplying inorganic nitrogen in small pulses at a high frequency favoured the cyanobacterium Synechococcus, whereas batch additions favoured the green alga Scenedesmus. When using a large-pulse/low-frequency supply mode, the yield of the green alga was higher when ammonium was added as nitrogen source compared to when nitrate was added. By contrast, the yield of the cyanobacterium was higher in the nitrate regime. However, uptake experiments using unialgal cultures showed that both organisms depleted the medium of ammonium more rapidly than they depleted the medium of nitrate; i.e. the higher yield of the cyanobacterium in the nitrate regime than in the ammonium regime can be attributed to the effects of competition with the green alga. Since nitrate assimilation involves the consumption of reductive power, we suggest that the outcome of competition was governed by the fact that green alga was light limited and therefore better able to compete for ammonium than for nitrate. The results from the laboratory studies are discussed in relation to results from an enclosure experiment performed in Lake Erken, Sweden. In that field experiment, in which additions of both phosphate and ammonium were applied every second day to 350-l enclosures, the green algal biomass increased exponentially during an incubation period of 22 days.  相似文献

1. We examined the relative changes in light intensity that initiate night‐time locomotor activity changes in nymphs of the mayfly, Stenonema modestum (Heptageniidae). Tests were carried out in a laboratory stream to examine the hypothesis that nymphs increase their locomotion in response to the large and sustained reductions in relative light intensity that take place during twilight but not to short‐term daytime light fluctuations or a minimum light intensity threshold. Ambient light intensity was reduced over a range of values representative of evening twilight. Light was reduced over the same range of intensities either continuously or in discrete intervals while at the same time nymph activity on unglazed tile substrata was video recorded. 2. Nymphs increased their locomotor activity during darkness in response to large, sustained relative light decreases, but not in response to short‐term, interrupted periods of light decrease. Nymphs did not recognise darkness unless an adequate light stimulus, such as large and sustained relative decrease in light intensity, had taken place. 3. We show that nymphs perceive light change over time and respond only after a lengthy period of accumulation of light stimulus. The response is much lengthier than reported for other aquatic organisms and is highly adaptive to heterogeneous stream environments.  相似文献

Heart rate, locomotor activity, and oxygen consumption were recorded simultaneously and continuously in seven individuals of the noble crayfish Astacus astacus (Linneus 1758) and seven individuals of the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana 1852). The recordings were made in the laboratory over 7 days at 15°C under a 12?:?12?h dark?:?light regime. Circadian rhythms in heart rate, locomotor activity and oxygen consumption were found both in A. astacus and P. leniusculus. Increased heart rate, locomotor activity, and oxygen consumption levels during night time in both A. astacus and P. leniusculus illustrated expression of nocturnal behaviour. No differences in oxygen consumption levels were observed between A. astacus and P. leniusculus. Also, no significant difference between heart rate levels or heart rate variances was found in A. astacus and P. leniusculus at night. During day, however, heart rate levels, heart rate variances and locomotor activity were higher in P. leniusculus than in A. astacus. The higher activity level in P. leniusculus than in A. astacus during daytime indicates that P. leniusculus is less strictly nocturnal than is A. astacus.  相似文献

Plants respond to grazing by herbivorous insects by emitting a range of volatile organic compounds, which attract parasitoids to their insect hosts. However, a positive outcome for the host plant is a necessary precondition for making the attraction beneficial or even adaptive. Parasitoids benefit plants by killing herbivorous insects, thus reducing future herbivore pressure, but also by curtailing the feeding intensity of the still living, parasitised host. In this study, the effect of parasitism on food consumption of the 5th instar larvae of the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) was examined under laboratory conditions. Daily food consumption, as well as the duration of the 5th instar, was measured for both parasitised and non-parasitised larvae. The results showed that parasitism by the solitary endoparasitoid Zele deceptor not only reduced leaf consumption significantly but also hastened the onset of pupation in autumnal moth larvae. On the basis of the results, an empirical model was derived to assess the affects on the scale of the whole tree. The model suggests that parasitoids might protect the tree from total defoliation at least at intermediate larval densities. Consequently, a potential for plant–parasitoid chemical signalling appears to exist, which seems to benefit the mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) by reducing the overall intensity of herbivore defoliation due to parasitism by this hymenopteran parasitoid.  相似文献

The level of locomotor activity throughout the entire postembryonic development of two crickets, Acheta domesticus (L.) and Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer, has been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. In both species the level of activity was subject to changes in the course of their development. Activity was reduced during the molting periods, creating a fluctuating pattern, yet in both species it was significantly higher at the end of development than at the beginning. Although the general trend of changes occurring was similar in both species, there were significant between-species differences in their pattern. The activity of A. domesticus larvae seemed to increase more gradually and it was significantly higher than the activity of G. bimaculatus larvae.  相似文献

The effects of light on the metabolic rates of the hypogean amphipod Niphargus stygius and the epigean amphipod Gammarus fossarum were compared by measuring oxygen consumption and respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activity. They were exposed to light intensities of 720 and 4700?lx at 10°C. Oxygen consumption increased significantly in N. stygius exposed to both low and high intensities of light, but no significant increase was observed in G. fossarum at either intensity. The increase of oxygen consumption in N. stygius was significantly greater at the higher light intensity. This indicates a stress response in which exploitation of half the metabolic potential for energy production in N. stygius during exposure to high light intensity constitutes an adverse effect on its metabolism, since this species usually uses less than 25% of its total metabolic potential for standard metabolic demands.  相似文献

The response to D-glucose (0–21 mM) was studied in neutrophil granulocytes from obese, hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic Umeå ob/ob mice and their lean, littermate controls in order to further elucidate the effects of in vivo and in vitro hyperglycemia on neutrophil function. Neutrophil random locomotion on glass and neutrophil resting luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence in cell suspension were studied. Random locomotion was stimulated by D-glucose in neutrophils from both Umeå ob/ob and control mice but the locomotive activity in Umeå ob/ob mouse neutrophils was significantly higher than that found in the controls at 4–21 mM glucose. In both types of mice, the stimulatory effect of D-glucose on random locomotion was diminished at 21 mM glucose (not significantly different from that at 0 mM glucose). Resting chemiluminescence from mouse neutrophils was also stimulated by glucose but here the magnitude of response was similar in neutrophils from both types of mice. These results indicate that chronic hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia in the Umeå ob/ob mouse may be associated with an increased neutrophil random locomotive activity but a similar resting production of reactive oxygen species, as compared with neutrophils from control mice at physiological and hyperglycemic glucose concentrations in vitro.  相似文献

Two strains of Legionella pneumophila of different virulence were examined for their influence on the metabolic oxidative activity of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The leukocytes exhibited decreased rates of oxygen consumption and diminished chemiluminescence activity following phagocytosis of a virulent strain of L. pneumophila serogroup 1. In contrast, phagocytosis of its multipassaged derivative rendered avirulent, was accompanied by increased rates of both oxygen consumption and chemiluminescence activity. Although no differences were observed in oxygen uptake induced by the virulent legionellae compared to leukocytes at rest, statistically significant differences were observed in the chemiluminescence responses. These observations were not unexpected, since the luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence assay, is more sensitive than the oxygen uptake assay. In spite of decreased metabolic activity of PMN in the presence of virulent legionellae, electron microscope studies showed higher numbers of intracellular L. pneumophila than the avirulent subtype. Thus, virulent and avirulent L. pneumophila can be differentiated on the basis of oxygen consumption and chemiluminescence assays.  相似文献

Growth of a cadmium-tolerant mutant strain of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was found to be impaired under photoautrotrophic, but not under mixotrophic conditions. As compared to wild-type cells, oxygen evolution by the photoautotrophically grown mutant was considerably decreased and higher photon fluence rates were required both for light compensation of oxygen consumption/production and maximal oxygen evolution. The capability for oxygen production was decreased in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells when grown in the presence of acetate without aeration. Wild-type cells grown under these conditions showed a rather low but significant oxygen evolution immediately after transfer to photoautotrophic conditions. This residual oxygen production was completely suppressed in the presence of acetate, obviously due to acetate inhibition of the water-splitting complex. In the case of our cadmium-tolerant mutant strain, however, residual oxygen production was measured even in the presence of acetate. After removal of acetate, oxygen evolution by the cadmium-tolerant mutant strain was increased to higher rates than measured for wild-type cells, but considerably higher photon fluence rates were required both for light compensation of oxygen consumption/production and maximal oxygen evolution. The conclusion that the donor side of photosystem II is affected in our cadmium-tolerant mutant strain was further corroborated by a stronger decrease of the fluorescence level caused by hydroxylamine.  相似文献

The rate of oxygen consumption was investigated in fed larval, nymphal and adult Ornithodoros turicata ticks and in starved nymphal and adult ticks. Oxygen consumption rate of fed adult ticks increased with increasing temperature. The metabolic rate of adult ticks was affected by starvation whereby starved adult ticks showed a significantly lower oxygen consumption than their fed counterparts. The oxygen consumption rate of fed female ticks was significantly higher than that of fed males but, there was no significant difference between the oxygen consumption rates of starved female versus starved male ticks. Oxygen consumption of fed larvae was significantly greater than those of fed first through third instar nymphs. Fed and starved nymphal ticks as well as fed adult ticks ventilated continuously. In contrast, starved adults ventilated discontinuously. The ability to reduce metabolic rate, plus the capability to ventilate discontinuously allow O. turicata adults to cope with prolonged starvation.  相似文献

The specific activity and the kinetic properties of partly purified pyruvate kinase (PK) (EC 2.7.1.40) from the Northern Krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, were investigated in relation to varying food resources. In order to evaluate the effect of starvation on the total energy metabolism, the respiration rates of fed and unfed krill were determined. The FPLC–elution profile of PK displayed two distinct peaks — PK I and II. The first isoform represented 80% of the total PK activity in the organism, and 20% was contributed by the second isoform. PK I was inhibited by ATP but was not influenced by fructose–1,6–bisphosphate (FBP). In contrast, PK II showed ATP inhibition and up to 2.5-fold increased activity by addition of 17 μmol·l−1 FBP. The Michaelis–Menten constants of both isoforms were 2–10-fold higher for ADP than for phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). Alanine showed no regulatory effect on PK I and II. In specimens starved for 7 days oxygen consumption decreased by 20%. Neither the feeding experiments nor the animals captured in the field during low and high productive seasons indicate that PK properties of M. norvegica are modified in relation to food supply. Accordingly, alternative mechanisms are involved in the depression of the metabolic rate in terms of oxygen consumption.  相似文献

The selection response of the polymorphic hostD. melanogaster (Meigen) to the braconid waspA. tabida (Nees) is addressed. Cages of flies with and without wasps were initiated with a population ofD. melanogaster that exhibited variation both in larval foraging behavior and in encapsulation ability. Encapsulation ability was measured as the proportion of parasitized larvae that produce a hardened capsule which encapsulates the wasp egg and ultimately kills the wasp larva. We determined whether the host population changed its encapsulation ability and/or its foraging behavior in response to the wasp. Both species were collected from a local orchard whereA. tabida is the only wasp known to parasitizeD. melanogaster larvae. The naturally occurring genetic polymorphism for rover and sitter larval foraging behavior inD. melanogaster is also found in this field population.A. tabida's vibrotactic search behavior enables it to detect rover more frequently than sitter larvae. Rover larvae move significantly more while feeding than do sitter larvae. In this field population, rover larvae also show higher encapsulation abilities than do sitter larvae. Six cage populations, three without wasps and three with wasps, each containing an equal mixture of rover and sitter flies, were established in the laboratory and maintained for 19 fly generations. Selection pressure in the laboratory was similar to that found in the field population from which the flies and wasps were derived. We found that larvae from cages with wasps developed a significantly higher frequency of encapsulation than those reared without wasps. We were, however, unable to detect a change in larval movement (rover or sitter behavior) in larvae from cages subject to selection from wasps compared to larvae from cages containing no wasps. This may have resulted from a balance between two selective forces, selection against rovers by the wasps' use of vibrotaxis, and selection for rovers resulting from their increased encapsulation abilities  相似文献

Variation in the locomotion behavior of Gammarus pulex was studied using the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor®. Behavior was recorded individually under a 12:12 h light:dark cycle for a period of 7 d during which the amphipods were not fed. Gammarids behaved differently during the first 7 h in the laboratory chambers. Most specimens were active and decreased their activity but some were relatively inactive after the start of the experiment and increased their locomotion. At least 2 h are needed by G. pulex to accustom to the conditions. No significant relationships existed between type of behavior during the acclimation period or acclimation time and gender or length of the gammarids. There was a large variation in time spent on locomotion during the first night. In general, males were significantly more active than females. Within males, a distinction can be made between very active and less active specimens. The 7-d observation period showed that only 70% of the specimens demonstrated a clear day–night rhythm with higher activity during the night. Unexpectedly, approximately 10% of the specimens were more active during daytime. Furthermore, in this study locomotion became relatively stable only after 4 d. Inter-individual variation in behavior must be taken into account when using behavior as an endpoint in ecotoxicological bioassays.  相似文献

The specific growth rate of the ethanol producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis was 25–40% lower in the presence of oxygen than under anaerobic conditions, provided the cultures were supplied with a low substrate concentration (20 g glucose/l). However, the molar growth yield of these cultures was not influenced by oxygen. With washed cell suspensions, an oxygen consumption could be initiated by the addition of either glucose, fructose, or ethanol. Cell extracts catalyzed the oxidation of NADH with oxygen at a molar ratio of 2:1. Further experiments showed that this NADH oxidase is located in the cell membrane. The specific oxygen consumption rates of cell suspensions correlated with the intracellular NADH oxidizing activities; both levels decreased with increasing concentrations of the fermentation end-product ethanol. The addition of 5 mM NaCN completely inhibited both the intracellular oxygen reduction and also the oxygen consumption of whole cells. Both catalase and superoxide dismutase were present even in anaerobically grown cells. Aeration seemed to have little effect on the level of catalase, but the superoxide dismutase activity was 5-fold higher in cells grown aerobically. Under aerobic conditions considerable amounts of acetaldehyde and acetic acid were formed in addition to the normal fermentation products, ethanol and carbon dioxide.Dedicated to Professor Dr. H. G. Summary 10 M CCCP protonophore in an acidic medium causes depolarization of the cell membrane and immediate cessation of locomotion inAcanthamoeba castellanii andAmoeba proteus. In the basic media there is no depolarization or inhibition of cell locomotion. Other depolarizing agents (alkali cations, crown molecules) also stop locomotion and induce pinocytosis in amoeba. Pinocytotic uptake of horseradish peroxidase byAcanthamoeba castellanii is increased by 69% in the presence of CCCP in the medium at pH 5.7 but is not influenced at higher pH values. This might indicate that both amoeboid locomotion and pinocytosis are controlled by membrane potential.  相似文献

In the presence of an extract of Ostrinia nubilalis or Mamestra brassicae eggs, female Trichogramma brassicae exhibited increased rates of upwind locomotion in the tubes of a linear olfactometer. GC and GC-MS analyses of O. nubilalis and M. brassicae egg extracts revealed the presence of fatty acids, their ethyl esters, and various hydrocarbons. Exposing the wasps to a mixture of the five main saturated hydrocarbons (heneicosane, tricosane, pentacosane, heptacosane and nonacosane) increased the upwind progression in the olfactometer. Single hydrocarbons elicited reduced or no activity. Ethyl palmitate and palmitic acid were also effective in increasing upwind locomotion. Z11-14:Ac, the main component of the female sex pheromone of O. nubilalis was inactive, regardless of its concentration. It is concluded that various compounds present on the surface of the O. nubilalis egg masses may play a role in the orientation of T. brassicae to its host.  相似文献

1. Daily basking periods were lengthened substantially during a breeding period in a natural population of the snake, Thamnophis melanogaster. 2. In the laboratory, oxygen consumption of male T. melanogaster significantly increased during a breeding period, compared to pre- and post-breeding levels in the same males. 3. In both laboratory and field males, serum lipid increased initially and then decreased during the breeding period. 4. Serum protein of laboratory males decreased significantly following the breeding period. 5. Serum glucose did not change significantly in laboratory males, but increased significantly during the breeding period in field males. 6. Changes in oxygen consumption and nutrient distribution may reflect changing energy demands attendant with gonadal recrudescence in this snake.  相似文献
