We studied an Andean endemic group of species of the lichen-forming fungal genus Umbilicaria from the subalpine and low-alpine zone, with their biogeographic center in Bolivia and Peru. A number of species and varieties have been described from this element, but apparent instability in several morphological traits has made it difficult to precisely delimit taxa. Based on DNA sequences of nuclear ITS, LSU and mitochondrial SSU from extensive collections from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, we present here a molecular phylogenetic analysis of this Andean endemic element within genus Umbilicaria. All analyses (MP, ML and Bayesian) support a single origin for the element and a division into two major groups characterized by different apothecium types: the Umbilicaria dichroa group and U. calvescens group. Taxa U. krempelhuberi, U. peruviana and U. subcalvescens are nested withinn U. calvescens and are treated as conspecific with the latter species. The endemic element shares a most recent common ancestor with the Umbilicaria vellea group, which has a worldwide distribution and contains several asexually reproducing (sorediate) species. Independent reversals to sexual reproduction might explain the evolution of two types of apothecia in this monophyletic endemic lineage. A number of cosmopolitan, mostly high-alpine, species of Umbilicaria also present in the central Andes are related only remotely to the endemic element and do not exhibit speciation into endemics. Because the An-dean element dominates the Umbilicaria habitats of the low- and subalpine zones we propose that the founder colonized the Andes at a time when the mountains had not yet reached their current elevation while the high-alpine species arrived more recently.  相似文献

Botryosphaeria sarmentorum sp. nov. and B. iberica sp. nov. are described and illustrated. These two species are unusual in this genus because of their brown, 1-septate ascospores. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and EF1-alpha sequences place them within the clade containing species with Fusicoccum anamorphs. The brown, 1-septate conidia, however, do not conform to Fusicoccum. Therefore phylogenetically and morphologically the anamorphs of these two species belong in a genus distinct from any of the currently accepted anamorph genera assigned to Botryosphaeria. Through a study of the type species of Dothiorella this genus is resurrected to accommodate anamorphs of Botryosphaeria with brown, 1-septate conidia. Botryosphaeria sarmentorum is shown to be the teleomorph of Diplodia sarmentorum, which in turn is transferred to Dothiorella. Otthia quercus is transferred to Botryosphaeria as B. quercicola nom. nov.  相似文献

Two new species ofConiochaeta, isolated from Japanese soils, are described and illustrated:C. cephalothecoides, which is characterized by dark brown ascomata clothed with short setae, cylindrical asci and ovoid to almond-shaped or pyriform ascospores with a longitudinal germ slit; andC. dumosa, which is characterized by dark brown ascomata clothed with short setae and dense hyphal hairs, cylindrical asci and ellipsoid-fusoid ascospores with a longitudinal germ slit. These species are distinguished from most species of the genus by the unique cephalothecoid peridium of their ascomata. The associated anamorphs of both species are assignable to the form-genusLecythophora.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships were inferred among several xylariaceous genera with Nodulisporium or nodulisporium-like anamorphs based on the analyses of beta-tubulin and alpha-actin sequences. One hundred nine cultures and three specimens of 83 representatives of these four genera were included in the study. Biscogniauxia taxa formed a well supported clade that was basal to the other taxa, while taxa of Hypoxylon and Daldinia comprised a large monophyletic group that contained two subclades. The first subclade encompassed Hypoxylon sect. Annulata and is accepted here as the new genus Annulohypoxylon. The second subclade contained taxa of Hypoxylon sect. Hypoxylon and Daldinia. Hypoxylon is restricted to include only those taxa in sect. Hypoxylon. Thirty-three epithets are made in Annulohypoxylon. Hypoxylon cohaerens var. microsporum is raised to the species level and accepted as A. minutellum. Hypoxylon polyporoideum is recognized as distinct from H. crocopeplum. Hypoxylon placentiforme is accepted as Daldinia placentiformis.  相似文献

The new genus and species Teracosphaeria petroica is described for a perithecial ascomycete and its anamorph occurring on decayed wood collected in New Zealand. The fungus produces immersed, non-stromatic ceratosphaeria-like perithecia in nature, with hyaline, septate ascospores produced in unitunicate, non-amyloid asci. The anamorph produced in vitro is phialophora-like with lightly pigmented phialides terminating in flaring, deep collarettes that are often noticeably brown with conspicuous periclinal thickening. Phylogenetic analysis of LSU rDNA sequence data indicates that this fungus is distinct from morphologically similar fungi classified in the Chaetosphaeriales, the Trichosphaeriales or the Magnaporthaceae. It forms a monophyletic group with recently described, chaetosphaeria-like ascomycetes, such as the pyrenomycete genus Mirannulata, and shows affinity with the anamorphic species Dictyochaeta cylindrospora. The usefulness of describing anamorph genera for morphologically reduced anamorphs, when anamorph characteristics are actually part of the holomorph diagnosis, is discussed. An apparently contradictory example of the so-called Cordana and Pseudobotrytis anamorphs of Porosphaerella spp. is also discussed.  相似文献

This paper documents the occurrence of the genus Umbilicaria in the neighbourhood of Admiralty Bay on King George Island in the maritime Antarctic. Nine species are reported from the area surveyed, with Umbilicaria kappeni being reported from King George Island for the first time. The occurrence of U. aprina, U. cristata and U. umbilicarioides on the island is confirmed and that of U. aprina is its first documented record from the maritime Antarctic. Fertile specimens of U. umbilicarioides are recorded for the first time from Antarctica. The area around Admiralty Bay seems to be one of the Antarctic regions with the highest diversity of Umbilicaria species. The diagnostic characters and distribution of each species are discussed. An updated key for identification of all the Antarctic species of the genus is provided.  相似文献

Two new Kirschsteiniothelia species are proposed in this study; both were collected on decaying wood from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces in northern Thailand. The taxa were isolated and the morphological characters are described and illustrated. ITS, LSU and SSU combined sequence analysis showed taxa of Kirschsteiniothelia separating into three lineages: (i) K. elaterascus grouped within Morosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales); (ii) K. maritima clustered with Mytilinidion spp. as a sister group in the Mytilinidiaceae clade; and (iii) the two new Kirschsteiniothelia species, which produce Dendryphiopsis anamorphs in culture, clustered with K. aethiops (the generic type) and the anamorph D. atra. The new family Kirschsteiniotheliaceae is introduced to accommodate taxa grouping with K. aethiops. K. elaterascus is transferred to Morosphaeria (Morosphaeriaceae) and a new genus Halokirschteiniothelia is introduced to accommodate K. maritima (Mytilinidiaceae).  相似文献

In the present paper a new species of Lasallia Merat is described and placed under a new subgenus Pleiogyra, characterized by having econcentrical multi-gyrate apothecia. In consequence of this finding, the conception of plane disc in the genus Lasallia of Umbilicariaceae becomes untenable. As a result of careful examination of rich materials, the writer considers the difference in disc found by Scholander among all species of the family is of certain significance for classification. Unfortunately, Scholander’s classification is based solely on this rather variable morphological character. If his view be adopted the new species will have to be inserted into the genus Gyrophora Ach. emend. Schol. If accepting Llano’s division of Umbilicariaceae into five genera, namely Lasallia, Agyrophora, Omphalodiscus, Umbilicaria and Actinogyra, the new species will have to be considered a new genus of the family. The present writer considers both Scholander’s and Llano’s systems as being artificial, because the former author emphasizes too much the unstable morphological appearance of disc and the later simply divides the family into five genera simultaneously on the basis of the stable and unstable characters of the various groups. In contrast with Scholander’s and Llano’s systems Frey’s classification neglects wholly the difference in the characters of disc. Such treatment is likewise unsound. The present writer supports the view held by Flotow, Koerber, Elenkin and Savicz (1950). Nevertheless, he does not agree with Savicz in erecting the subgenus Gyrophoropsis (Elenk. et Savicz) Savicz, because muriform spores are present not only in the group having gyrate discs, but also in the groups having plane and omphalic discs of the Genus Umbilicaria Hoffm. emend. Vej. The recognition of this subgenus must therefore deny the basis on which the other four subgenera are established. The system of Umbilicariaceae held by the writer is as follows: I. Genus Lasallia Merat emend. Vej ...... Thallus pustulate; disc plane to econcentrical multi-gyrate; spores 1(2) per ascus, quite large, muriform. 1. Subgenus Lasallia...Disc plane. 2. Subgenus Pleiogyra Vej ...... Disc econcentrical multigyrate. II. Genus Umbilicaria Hoffm. emend. Vej (syn. Gyrophora Ach. emend. Savicz)* ...Thallus non-pustulate; disc plane and smooth or plane with central sterile column (or fissure) or with gyri; spores 8 per ascus, simple, hyaline or becoming brown muriform, small. 1. Subgenns Agyrophora (Nyl.) Savicz ...... Disc plane. (1) Section Agyrophora (syn. sect. Anthracinae emend. Llano). ..... Spores simple and hyaline. (2) Section Dichroae Llano ...... Spores becoming brown muriform. 2. Subgenus Omphalodiscus (Schol.) Savicz ...... Disc with central sterile column or fissure. (1) Section Omphalodiscus (syn. sect. Decussatae Schol.) ...... Spores simple and hyaline. (2) Section Spodochroae Schol. ..... Spores becoming muriform. 3. Subgenus Umbilicaria...Disc with concentrical gyri; spores simple and hyaline or becoming muriform. (1) Section Umbilicaria (syn. sect. Simplices Llano) ...... Spores simple and hyaline. (2) Section Gyrophoropsis (Elenk. et Savicz) A. Zahlbr. (syn. sect. Muriformes Llano) ...... Spores becoming muriform.4. Subgenus Actinogyra (Schol.) Savicz ...... Disc with radial gyri, proper margin absent.  相似文献

Nine species of the saxicolous lichen genus Umbilicaria from Ecuador are reported and a key is provided: U. africana, U. aprina, U. cinereorufescens, U. decussata, U. dendrophora, U. haplocarpa, U. leprosa, U. nylanderiana and U. vellea. The species diversity of this genus on the equatorial high mountains of South America is low compared to North America and Eurasia, but similar to that found on high African peaks close to the equator. The species mostly belong to a high‐alpine element with worldwide distribution. Two species belong to an Andean endemic element, viz U. haplocarpa and U. leprosa. The low diversity and low percentage of endemism may reflect the fairly recent uplift of the Andes and the comparatively small geographic extent of the alpine Andean biota. The dense rainforests of Ecuador leave few suitable open rock habitats for the establishment of these light‐craving lichens below the tree‐line (4000–4200 m a.s.l.), and thus their equatorial habitat is almost exclusively restricted to the alpine zone between the tree‐line and the snow‐line (4700–4800 m a.s.l.). The equatorial species mainly reproduce asexually by thalloconidia, and the adaptive significance of this type of reproduction in high altitude habitats is discussed.  相似文献

The genus Ceratocystis sensu stricto includes important fungal pathogens of woody and herbaceous plants. This genus is distinguished from species in Ceratocystis sensu lato by the presence of Chalara anamorphs. Ascospore shape has been used extensively in delineating Ceratocystis taxa, which show a large variety of ascospore shapes. Sequence analysis of one region of he 18S ribosomal RNA subunit and two regions of the 28S ribosomal RNA subunit showed that there was a majority of multiple substitutions at nucleotide sites and that there was a low transition/transversion ratio, T = 0.72. Both of these results suggest that these are well established, old species. Ascospore morphology, for the most part, was not congruent with the molecular phylogeny, and the use of morphological characters may be misleading in the taxonomy of these species.   相似文献

Marine brown algae living as endophytes in macroalgae are morphologically simple and their taxonomy is particularly difficult. A molecular phylogeny for endophytic taxa isolated from kelps and red algae, and for putative epiphytic and free-living relatives, was inferred from partial small subunit and complete internal transcribed spacer nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences. It has revealed the following results. (1) Three species of endophytes isolated from members of the Laminariales are closely related. They form a clade together with the epi-endophytic species Laminariocolax tomentosoides (Farlow) Kylin. Members of the clade possess uniseriate plurilocular sporangia, and they may form erect filaments. Laminariocolax eckloniae sp. nov., occurring in the South African host Ecklonia maxima (Osbeck) Papenfuss, is described. The new combinations, Laminariocolax aecidioides (Rosenvinge) comb. nov. and L. macrocystis (Peters) comb. nov., are proposed for two taxa previously classified in Gononema and Streblonema , respectively. (2) The genus Laminariocolax occurs worldwide in temperate areas, and the phylogeny of the taxa studied is in agreement with biogeographic distribution. (3) Laminariocolax belongs to the Ectocarpales sensu lato. The genus is more closely related to Chordaria than to Dictyosiphon, Ectocarpus, or Scytosiphon . (4) Two brown endophytes ( Streblonema spp.), isolated from red algae, are closely related to each other and may form a sister clade to Laminariocolax .  相似文献

The genus Cryptadelphia (Trichosphaeriales) is described for the presumed teleomorphs of six species of the dematiaceous hyphomycete genus Brachysporium. Cryptadelphia is characterized by the production of dark, leathery perithecia with two-layered walls, cylindrical, long-stipitate asci with eight hyaline, initially aseptate but ultimately 1-septate as-cospores. Zigno?lla groenendalensis is transferred to Cryptadelphia with Wallrothiella melanostigmoides as a synonym. Five new species, i.e., Cryptadelphia abietis, C. brevior, C. obovata, C. pendulispora and C. polyseptata, with their respective Brachysporium anamorphs, are described and illustrated. Phylogenetic analysis of partial large subunit rDNA sequences of two species supports the monophyly of Cryptadelphia and suggests a relationship with the Trichosphaeriales. The monophyly of the Trichosphaeriaceae and the relationships between the Trichosphaeriaceae, Annula-tascaceae and the Sordariales can be questioned, but a conclusive assessment requires phylogenetic analysis of more related taxa. The genus Wallrothiella is redescribed based on new collections of W. congregata and is characterized by the production of tiny, globose ascospores in cylindrical asci. The new collection is proposed as a neotype for the genus.  相似文献
