The Structure of the Mesophyll of Flag Leaves in Three Triticum Species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Flag leaves of Triticum urartu, T. monococcum and T. aestivumcv. Professeur Marchal were examined by light and electron microscopyand by separating cells to determine whether differences inleaf anatomy could be related to known differences in theirlight-saturated rates of photosynthesis. Mesophyll cells fromthe three species were lobed and orientated with their longaxis parallel to the veins. The longest, most-lobed cells flankedthe sclerenchyma associated with the veins. Mean cell dimensionswere greatest in Professeur Marchal, but there was no significantdifference in the ratio of the mesophyll cell surface area tocell volume amongst the three species. Flag leaves of T. urartushowed the highest rates of photosynthesis and were also thethickest, with closely-spaced veins from which many of the mesophyllcells radiated. These flag leaves also had significantly more(21.9 per cent) air-filled space, and the highest ratio (15.2)of mesophyll cell surface exposed to this air-filled space perunit leaf area. Ways in which these anatomical characteristicsmay contribute to the higher rate of photosynthesis are discussed. The growth rates of Appendicularia sicula, Fritillaria borealissargassi, Fritillaria haplostoma, Oikopleura dioica and Oikopleuralongicauda were determined from microcosms incubated in situat 23C in Jamaican waters. Experiments were conducted fromoligotrophic offshore waters, through mesotrophic Lime Cay andeutrophic Kingston Harbour in both natural and nutrient-enhancedphytoplankton communities. Length-weight relationships werecalculated for two of these species: O.longicauda log W=2.47log TL –6.10 and F.haplostoma log W=2.44 log TL –7.37,where weight (W) is in micrograms and trunk length (TL) is inmicrometres. Instantaneous growth rates averaged 1.7–2.5day–1 for the five species and were observed as high as3.3 day–1 These instantaneous rates are equivalent todaily specific growth rates averaging 4.6–11.4 and rangingup to 28. In larger genera, growth rates were related positivelyto picoplankton and nanoplankton concentration, and negativelyto the biomass of larvaceans, but in the smallest species growthwas unrelated to these factors. The planktonic rotifer Ascomorpha ovalis feeds on large dinoflagellates(e.g. Ceratium sp., Peridinium sp.) and is able to extract theircell contents by means of its virgate mastax. This paper presentsthe results of experiments on the feeding behaviour of laboratory-culturedAscomorpha with Cerarium furcoides as food algae. Ascomorphaare three times larger than their prey Ceratium (by volume),but with regard to total length, their prey was even 20% larger.Ascomorpha showed a hyperbolic functional response curve witha plateau of the feeding rate at 8 Ceratium cells animal–1dar–1 when concentrations of Ceratium were >100 cellsml–1. The mean handling time (time for capturing and extractingone Ceratium cell) was 3 min. The shape of the functional responsewas better described by a curvilinear model than by a rectilinearmodel. However, handling times cannot be responsible for this,since they were too short to set limits on ingestion rates.At low food concentrations, encounter rates with prey seemedto limit the feeding rates of Ascomorpha, whereas at mediumto high food concentrations, Satiation effects (lower attackrates) seemed to set limits on the feeding rates. Ascomorphashowed a significant decrease in the exploitation of singleCeratium cells at high prey concentrations. This decrease couldbe explained by a saturation effect in which the partly filledguts of Ascomorpha did not permit the total extraction of thecontents of a Ceratium cell.  相似文献

Dissolved inorganic 14carbon, fed to a small portion of thetissue of Conocephalun conicum, travelled along the tissuesfrom cell to cell at rates of about 2.0 to 1.7 µm 5–1,which is of the same order of magnitude as streaming rates inthese cells. Trans-cellular transport can take place againsta pressure gradient, but pressure gradients of 200 kPa or morein either direction reduced the trans-cellular transport significantlywithout reducing streaming rate and are, therefore, thoughtto have induced ‘valving’ effects at the plasmodesmata.Ammonium ion reduced or inhibited transport without reducingstreaming rates and is, therefore, thought to have inhibitedan active component in the plasmodesmata. Roots of Allium cepa L. cv. Yellow are differentially responsiveto gravity. Long (e.g. 40 mm) roots are strongly graviresponsive,while short (e.g. 4 mm) roots are minimally responsive to gravity.Although columella cells of graviresponsive roots are largerthan those of nongraviresponsive roots, they partition theirvolumes to cellular organelles similarly. The movement of amyloplastsand nuclei in columella cells of horizontally-oriented rootscorrelates positively with the onset of gravicurvature. Furthermore,there is no significant difference in the rates of organellarredistribution when graviresponsive and nongraviresponsive rootsare oriented horizontally. The more pronounced graviresponsivenessof longer roots correlates positively with (1) their caps being9.6 times more voluminous, (2) their columella tissues being42 times more voluminous, (3) their caps having 15 times morecolumella cells, and (4) their columella tissues having relativevolumes 4·4 times larger than those of shorter, nongraviresponsiveroots. Graviresponsive roots that are oriented horizontallyare characterized by a strongly polar movement of 45Ca2+ acrossthe root tip from the upper to the lower side, while similarlyoriented nongraviresponsive roots exhibit only a minimal polartransport of 45Ca2+. These results indicate that the differentialgraviresponsiveness of roots of A. cepa is probably not dueto either (1) ultrastructural differences in their columellacells, or (2) differences in the rates of organellar redistributionwhen roots are oriented horizontally. Rather, these resultsindicate that graviresponsiveness may require an extensive columellatissue, which, in turn, may be necessary for polar movementof 45Ca2+ across the root tip. The role of gibberellins in regulating the growth of tomatoroots was investigated by comparing various cellular parametersin cultured roots of the gibberellin-deficient mutant gib-l/gib-lwith those in roots of the near-isogenic wild-type. In addition,wild-type roots treated with 0?1 µM 2S,3S paclobutrazol,an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis, and mutant roots treatedwith 0?1 µM GA3 were also compared: the former roots constitutea phenocopy of the mutant, whereas the latter roots appear tobe ‘normalized’ and similar to wild-type. The elongationof mutant and phenocopied roots were similar, their maximumelongation rates being about half or two-thirds that of wild-typeor GA3-treated mutant roots, respectively. These rates wereinterpreted in terms of the numbers and lengths of cells withinthe meristematic and non-meristematic portions of the elongationzone. Mean meristem length tended to be shorter in both themutant and the 2S,3S paclobutrazol-treated wild-type roots thanin the other two types of root. A major difference between thetwo pairs of mutant and normal roots was their mean final celllengths: mean lengths of cortical cells of the mutant and 2S,3Spaclobutrazol-treated roots were, respectively, 39% and 25%shorter than the mean length of wild-type roots. Final celllength in the GA3-treated mutant roots were similar to wild-type.By contrast, the diameters of mature cortical cells of the mutantand phenocopy were about 20% greater than the diameters of equivalentwild-type or ‘normalized’ mutant cells. The meanvolumes of cortical cells in all four types of roots showedno significant differences. Knowledge of the distribution ofcortical cell lengths, widths and volumes along the root axis,together with information about the rate of root elongation,permitted comparisons of the relative elemental growth ratesof each of these three cellular parameters. The available evidence suggests that the level of endogenousgibberellins in mutant roots is lower than in wild-type roots.The present results, therefore, suggest that endogenous gibberellinsare necessary for normal growth of cultured tomato roots andthat they regulate the relative amounts of growth at the longitudinaland transverse walls of the cells which, in turn, affects theshape of the elongating cells. Food limitation for the cladoceran Daphnia galeta was measuredgrowing them with natural lake seston for one growing seasonunder standardized conditions in the laboratory. Growth rateswere related to several measures of food quantity. Particulateorganic carbon (POC) <30 µm was the best predictorof total food availability measured. It was better than chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) of the same size fraction, algal volume calculated fromcell counts or total particle volume from Coulter Counter measurements.Daphnids were also grown with Scenedesmus acutus under the sameconditions and their growth rates were compared. Sestonic carbonconcentrations were related to Scenedesmus carbon concentrations,that provided equal growth rates. The ratio of the carbon concentrationsof both food types (seston, Scenedesmus) represented the foodquality of seston. Thus, the nutritional quality of naturallake seston relative to a standard alga was determined overone growing season. Growth rates of seston fed animals revealedthat they were food limited during long periods of the year.This was also ascertained by standard clutch sizes of fieldanimals. However, the causes of food limitation varied withinthe duration of the studied period. Whereas during the clear-waterphase the food quantity was limiting (while the quality washigh: 100% Scenedesmus), shortly after on 10 June and 17 Junefood conditions were close to threshold concentrations due tolow food quality. To correlate a prokaryotic endosymbiont in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphonkondoi, with the endosymbionts in related aphid species as wellas with free-living bacteria and subcellular organelles, andto study the mode of its gene expression within aphid cells,we have cloned and characterized the genes encoding ribosomalproteins S3, L16, L29, S17, L14, L24, L5, S14, S8, L6, L18,S5, L30, L15 and secretion protein Y (Sec Y) from the S10 andspc ribosomal protein gene operons of this endosymbiont. Theorganization of these genes is identical to that in Escherichiacoli, and their nucleotide sequences are highly similar (87%identity) to the corresponding E. coli genes. They are muchless similar to the corresponding chloroplast and mitochondrialgenes. The guanine plus cytosine G+C content of the genes ofthe A. kondoi endosymbiont is much higher than those of theendosymbionts in related aphid species reported so far. It appearseither that the A. kondoi endosymbiont is derived from an ancestralbacterium different from those in other aphids or that its G+Ccontent increased in a relatively short time after the evolutionarydivergence of its host.  相似文献

1982~1999年对黑龙江省哈尔滨郊区人为鼠疫疫源地达乌尔黄鼠Spermophilus dauricus巢蚤、体蚤、洞干蚤指数和染蚤率进行了调查和分析。共获蚤9种,其中方形黄鼠蚤松江亚种Citellophius tesquorum sungaris是优势种(89.39%),其次为二齿新蚤Neopsylla bidentatiformis (10.37%)。3类蚤指数、染蚤率的均值差异均显著(P<0.01)。巢蚤与体蚤指数相关显著(P<0.05)。巢蚤指数∶体蚤指数∶洞干蚤指数≈650∶140∶1; 巢染蚤率∶体染蚤率∶洞干染蚤率≈165∶88∶1。  相似文献

Boeckella, the dominant calanoid in many Southern Hemispherelakes, can survive, grow and reproduce to varying extents onmonocultures of cyanobacteria. In this study, we determinedthe effects of algal and cyanobacterial foods of different nutritionalvalue and concentration on food preferences of adult femaleBoeckella trianiculata and Boeckella hamata. Four species ofcyanobacteria (Anabaena flos-aquae, Nostoc sp. 2, OscillatoriatenuisandMicrocystis aeruginosa) were offered alone and mixedwith equal biomasses of Cryptomonas sp., Choricystis or a cyanobacterium.Food preferences were calculated as ratios of the rates at whichthe copepods removed each food at high and low food concentrations.In high-concentration mixtures with cyanobacteria, Cryptomonaswas consistently preferred by both Boeckella spp. In low-concentrationmixtures, both Boeckella spp. preferred Anabaena and Nostoc,which they removed at high rates(81–142 ml mg–1h–1), although Cryptomonas was selected in preferenceto Oscillatoria and Microcystis. When fed mixtures of filamentouscyanobacteria, both species of Boeckella showed invariant discriminationagainst Nostoc, andshifts in preference between Anabaena andOscillatoria that were related to food concentration. Exponentially growing cultures of the chlorophyta Tetraedronminimum were allowed to photoadapt to low (50µmole quantam–2s–1) and high (500µmole quanta m–2–1)irradiance levels. In these cultures, various aspects of theorganization of the photosynthetic apparatus and related differencesin its performance were studied. In this organism, the observed five-fold increase in pigmentationof low-light adapted cells was due to increases in the numbersof PSU's, while their sizes remained constant. Using radioimmunoassay technique, we found that high-light adaptedalgae had over five times more Rubisco per PSU than their low-lightadapted counterparts. The high-light adapted algae also exhibited far higher (x2.3)light saturated photosynthetic rates per chl a. This increasewas the result of a reduction of tau, , the turnover time ofPS II reaction centers. We propose that the increase in Rubisco per PSU in high-lightadapted algae explains the reduction in , which results in thehigher Pmax rates per chl a in these algae. A fundamental question regarding marine copepods is how themany species coexist and persist in the oligotrophic environment(i.e. Hutchinson’s paradox). This question is addressedwith a stochastic, object-oriented Lagrangian model that explicitlysimulates the distinct foraging behaviors of three prominenttropical species: Clausocalanus furcatus, Paracalanus aculeatusand Oithona plumifera. The model also individually tracks allprey cells. Each particle’s motion combines sinking, turbulentdiffusion and active swimming when applicable. The model successfullysimulates observed size-partitioned carbon uptake rates. Basedon the model results, the wide-ranging translational ambit employedby C. furcatus is best suited for the acquisition of passiveprey while the relatively stationary behavior of O. plumiferapromotes the capture of larger, quickly sinking cells. The modelresults further suggest that the slow velocities and feedingcurrent employed by P. aculeatus are best suited for acquiringthe smallest cells though it also has a slight advantage overC. furcatus in acquiring the largest prey. A resource threshold,at a prey concentration of 530 cells mL–1, is consistentlyexhibited by all three modeled species. Overall, these resultsimply that the size-partition preferences due to their differentforaging behavior contribute to the coexistence of these threespecies. Wheat seedlings {Triticum aestivum L.) were grown on soils withcontrasted resistances to root penetration (measured as penetrometerresistance, Rs. High Rs reduced the rates of leaf appearanceand expansion. Although the duration of expansion was increased,mature leaves were smaller. Underlying changes in leaf anatomywere investigated on cleared mature leaves, focusing on theepidermes. Three leaves were analysed: leaves 1 and 3 whichstarted their development in the embryo, and leaf 5 which wasinitiated on the seedling, after imposition of contrasted soilconditions. In all leaves, high Rs, caused a reduction in maturecell sizes, lengths and widths, and a shift in the relativeproportions of functionally different cell types, with a decreasein the relative proportions of stomata and associated cell types(interstomatal and sister cells) and an increase in the proportionsof unspecialized elongated epidermal cells and of trichomes.In leaves 3 and 5 the number of cellular files across the bladewas also reduced, while in leaf 1 it was similar at the twoRs. These differences between leaves are attributed to differencesin their developmental stage when root stress was first perceived.Remarkably, Rs had no effect (leaf 1) or relatively small effects(leaves 3 and 5) on the total number of cells per file, suggestingthat this parameter is either largely insensitive to variationin root environment, or is programmed at the outset before stresswas perceived at the apex. Potential carbon-specific growth rates of phytoplankton wereestimated from a series of measurements of photosynthetic radio-carbonuptake over 4- and 24-h exposure periods in the light fieldsof three large limnetic enclosures (‘Lund Tubes’),each providing different limnological and trophic conditions.Photosynthetic behaviour and short-term, chlorophyll-specificcarbon-fixation rates conformed to well-established criteriabut, over 24 h, the net retention represented 23–82% ofthe carbon fixed during the daylight hours. Potential mean growthrates (k'p, of the photo-autotrophic community were calculatedas the net exponential rates of daily carbon-accumulation relativeto derived, instantaneous estimates of the cell carbon-content.Apparent actual community growth rates (k'D were calculatedas the sum of the exponential rates of change of each of themajor species present, corrected for probable rates of in situgrazing and sinking, and expressed relative to the fractionof total biomass for which they accounted. The correspondingvalues were only occasionally similar, k'p generally exceedingK'D by a factor of between 1 and 30 or 1 and 14, depending uponthe carbon:chlorophyll ratio used. The ratio, K'p/K'D was foundto vary inversely both to k'D and to kn, the net rate of changein phytoplankton biomass, suggesting that measured carbon fixationrates merely represent a capacity for cellular increase which,owing to other likely limitations upon growth, is seldom realized.Apparent rates of loss of whole cells do not account for theloss of carbon; that the ‘unaccounted’ loss rates(K'pK'D varied in direct proportion to K'p (i.e., losseswere least when chlorophyll-specific photosynthetic productivitywas itself limited) is best explained by physiological voidingof excess carbon (for instance, by respiration, photorespiration,excretion) prior to the formation of new cells.  相似文献

The hypothesis that ubiquitous, sticky transparent exopolymerparticles (TEP) formed from phytoplankton exudates will adhereto and coat the feeding structures of marine zooplankton grazers,and thus depress feeding on phytoplankton, was tested usingthe euphausiid, Euphausia pacifica, as a model organism. Duringtwo feeding experiments, E.pacifica were offered cells of thediatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, TEP, or both TEP and T.weissflogiicells. Ingestion rates on cells were lower in the presence ofTEP. However, contrary to the hypothesis, grazing on cells wasnot inhibited by TEP. Rather, TEP-clusters, aggregates whichformed from TEP and nano-sized particles normally too smallfor the filtering apparatus of E.pacifica to retain, servedas an alternative food source for E.pacifica, reducing theiringestion of cells. These clusters were very similar in formto the TEP actually available to marine grazers in nature. TEP-clusterswere similar to cells in size and food quality, and were grazedat similar rates. When feeding on TEP-clusters, euphausiidsshort circuit the food web by feeding on nano- and picoplanktondirectly, bypassing the microbial loop. Relationships among the chlorophyll-specific photosyntheticbehaviour of a Melosira-dominated phytoplankton, net variationsin the quantity of Melosira in suspension, the rates of sinkingloss of Melosira cells and did fluctuations in water-columnstability were investigated in Embalse Rapel. central Chile.The short study was carried out during the autumnal equinoxialperiod (March. 1984) of maximal Melosira abundance to determinethe extent to which these various components might contributeto the distinctly bimodal seasonal distribution of phytoplanktonabundance in this reservoir. Diurnal photosynthetic productionwithin the illuminated layer and supposed column respirationwere found to be of a similar order, suggesting that net increasethrough cellular growth was already substantially limited byself-shading. Thus observed net changes in the standing populationmay have depended more on the relative magnitude of sinkingloss rates and recruitment through resuspension, which processesare profoundly influenced by alternations in wind-induced mixingand intense, near-surface, thermal stratification. As the relativefrequency and duration of these episodes vary during the year,so does the capacity of the Melosira to maintain or increaseits standing biomass. High cellular photosynthetic efficiencycoupled with rapid sinking rate appear to be of selective advantagewhen the cycle of alternation is approximately diel. The applicationof these findings to the seasonal distribution of M. granulatain the Rapel reservoir and to the ecology of planktonic Melosirapopulations elsewhere is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Early embryo growth rates were studied in the nine annual speciesof Cicer L., namely, C. arietinum L., C. bijugum Rech., C. chorassanicum(Bge.) M. Pop., C. cuneatum Rich., C. echinospermum Dav., C.judaicum Boiss, C. pinnatifidum J. and S., C. reticulatum Lad.and C. yamashitae Kit. The number of embryo cells increasedexponentially with time and was log linear in all the species.Species differed in their mean cell doubling time (MCDT). Cicerechinospermum and C. yamashitae had, respectively, the longestand the shortest MCDT which ranged from 9.67 to 16.15 h forthe nine species. Failure of successful interspecific hybridizationbetween C. arietinum and the wild annual species was only partlyexplained by differences in MCDT of the parental species. The changes in morphology of the unicellular algae Cylindrocystisbrebissonii and two species of Micrasterias during freezingand thawing were observed on a light microscope fitted witha temperature controlled stage. At slow rates of cooling extensiveshrinkage of the protoplast was observed. The response of thecell wall varied with cell-type. In C. brebissonii plasmolysiswas not observed and the cell wall and protoplast shrank together.In Micrasterias the cell wall did not contract and a distinctplasmolysis was observed. Following freezing to and thawingfrom –25?C cells of C. brebissonii were non-viable butremained osmotically responsive. Cooling at faster rates inducedintracellular ice formation in all cell-types. The criticalrate of cooling varied with cell-type and was determined bycell volume and suface area. Intracellular gas bubbles wereobserved during thawing following both rapid and slow cooling. Following cooling in dimethylsulphoxide cells of C. brebissoniiwere protected against freezing injury. The recovery on thawingfrom –196?C being determined by the rate of cooling, anoptimum rate of 1?C min–1 was observed. During slow ratesof cooling (<2?C min–1) cells remained unshrunken,at faster rates (10?C min–1) the loss of cell viabilitywas related to osmotic shrinkage during cooling rather thanto nucleation of intracellular ice. A winter bloom of the colonial stage of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystispouchetit was studied in the 13-m3 mesocosms of the Marine EcosystemResearch Laboratory on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island The tankswere temperature regulated at 4±2°C but differedin their nutrient concentrations and in situ irradiances. Oneof the tanks was a control without added nutrients, one receiveda temporary nutrient spike and two others received daily N/P/Siinputs. Photosynthesis and growth rates of colonies exposedto a range of natural light levels were measured at weekly intervals.Particulate carbon production and release of dissolved organiccarbon (DOC) by the entire plankton community was determinedconcurrently. Photosynthesis and growth rates of Phaeocystisin tanks receiving daily nutrient additions were asymptoticfunctions of irradiance. Light-saturated rates exhibited asymptoticrelationships with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) levels.N-Limited populations showed more variable responses. Althoughirradiance and N availability regulated the population dynamicsof Phaeocystis, the presence or absence of silicate (S1) influencedits relative importance in each tank. Phaeocystis dominatedcommunity metabolism in the absence of Si, but co-occurred withextensive stands of diatoms when Si was available. A significantpositive correlation was found between the contribution by Phaeocystisto community production and the proportion of photosynthatereleased as DOC In all tanks, Phaeocystis populations exhibitedcycles of abundance in which division of cells within coloniespreceded the multiplication of colonies. The production of newcolonies apparently occurred via two mechanisms: the formationof colonies from solitary cells, and the cleavage of largercolonies into smaller daughter colonies. Phaeocystis in tankswith near undetectable nutrient levels contained C:N, C:Chla, and C:ATP ratios several times higher than colonies in nutnent-repletetanks. Feeding experiments were conducted with the ambush-feeding copepodAcartia tonsa and the feeding-current-generating copepod Temoralongicornis. The copepods were offered a mixed diet of the dinoflagellateHeterocapsa triquetra and the ciliate Balanion comatum of similarcell size. The dinoflagellate was offered at a constant concentrationof 10–15 cells mL–1, whereas the ciliate was offeredat a variety of concentrations, ranging from 7 to 57 cells mL–1.Copepods with different feeding modes possess different mechanismsfor prey detection, suggesting that the two copepods would responddifferently to the two prey types. Both copepods had significantlyhigher clearance rates on the highly motile ciliate than onthe less motile dinoflagellate. In encounters between A. tonsaand its prey, we argue that this is due to the higher hydromechanicalsignal generated by the ciliate. The advection feeding copepodT. longicornis fed on the two prey according to their relativeconcentrations; in this case, we suggest that although B. comatumis capable of detecting feeding-current-generating predators,the feeding current velocity generated by T. longicornis isgreater than the escape velocity of this ciliate.  相似文献
