Due to the night observations during the gravidity of the Asian Elephant “Pang Pha” in 2005 it was possible to receive data on the sleeping behavior of 1.3 Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) at Berlin Zoological Garden. These elephants were the breeding bull “Victor” (born 22.10.1993 at Zoological Center Ramat Gan), “Pang Pha” (born 1987 in Thailand), “Drumbo” (born 1970) and “Iyoti” (born 1974 in India). Elephant “Pang Pha” slept only one and a half hour, whereas the two older cows lay nearly four hours. The bull lay longest.  相似文献

Genetic analysis is a useful tool for assigning biological relationships. Thus, it will improve genetic management of wild animal populations and breeding colonies. Kinship analysis will give new insights into the behavior, sociobiology and genetic management of orangutans. In this study, chromosomal DNA from orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ssp.) was extracted from excrements. Feces samples were screened for up to nine microsatellite markers from related zoo populations of orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus ssp.) kept at the Zoological Garden Berlin and the Zoological Garden Heidelberg, Germany. Family structures are documented in the "International Studybook of the Orangutan" (Perkins 1995) and the "Europ?isches Erhaltungszucht Programm 1998" (Becker 1998). To examine whether human short tandem repeat loci (STR) are suitable for the reconstruction of kinship in orangutans, nine STRs, commonly used in forensic studies and the amelogenin system, were amplified in a multiplex-PCR approach (AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus). We were able to show that five of the nine human autosomal STRs in question amplified successfully in orangutans. Thus, we could reconstruct kinship structures of the Berlin and Heidelberg populations.  相似文献

A young female Californian sea lion, born on 5th June 2011 at Berlin Zoological Garden, has been observed producing air bubble rings and playing with them by destroying. This behavior was documented on a digital video, a second digital video showing this behaviour has been found on the internet. The animal blows here the air forming a ring at the deepest point of the pool and repeated this behavior several times. It seems that the pinniped has refined this play comparing to the first video. Although there is some literature about whales playing with self-produced air bubble rings, there is only less notice for this object play in pinnipeds.  相似文献

The physiological indicators such as body temperature, blood chemistry and hematology of seven European brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) were used in the present study. They were kept in either the Zoological Garden of University of Oulu (65°N, 25°24'E) or the Ranua Zoological Garden approx. 150 km NE of Oulu. Transmitters with a temperature-dependent pulse rate were implanted subcutaneously or into the abdominal cavity under anesthesia. Our data indicate that the body temperature of the bear decreases during the winter sleep to 4–5°C below the normal level (37.0–37.5°C). The lowest values, 33.1–33.3°C, were measured several times in midwinter. Hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocyte counts seem to be higher, and the leucocyte count lower during the denning period than in the awake bear. Plasma N-wastes were lower during the winter sleep than before or after it. The analysed blood parameters showed that plasma catecholamines and thyroid hormones decreased in the fall.  相似文献

Molecular typing at the 18S rRNA and Gp60 loci was conducted on Cryptosporidium-positive stool samples from cases collected during 2007 Western Australian and South Australian outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis. Analysis of 48 Western Australian samples identified that all isolates were C. hominis and were from five different Gp60C. hominis subtype families. The IbA10G2 subtype was most common across all age groups (37/48). In South Australia, analysis of 24 outbreak samples, identified 21 C. hominis isolates, two C. parvum isolates and one sample with both C. hominis and C. parvum. All C. hominis isolates were identified as the IbA10G2 subtype.  相似文献

Background and Aims Although mycorrhizal associations are predominantly generalist, specialized mycorrhizal interactions have repeatedly evolved in Orchidaceae, suggesting a potential role in limiting the geographical range of orchid species. In particular, the Australian orchid flora is characterized by high mycorrhizal specialization and short-range endemism. This study investigates the mycorrhizae used by Pheladenia deformis, one of the few orchid species to occur across the Australian continent. Specifically, it examines whether P. deformis is widely distributed through using multiple fungi or a single widespread fungus, and if the fungi used by Australian orchids are widespread at the continental scale.Methods Mycorrhizal fungi were isolated from P. deformis populations in eastern and western Australia. Germination trials using seed from western Australian populations were conducted to test if these fungi supported germination, regardless of the region in which they occurred. A phylogenetic analysis was undertaken using isolates from P. deformis and other Australian orchids that use the genus Sebacina to test for the occurrence of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in eastern and western Australia.Key Results With the exception of one isolate, all fungi used by P. deformis belonged to a single fungal OTU of Sebacina. Fungal isolates from eastern and western Australia supported germination of P. deformis. A phylogenetic analysis of Australian Sebacina revealed that all of the OTUs that had been well sampled occurred on both sides of the continent.Conclusions The use of a widespread fungal OTU in P. deformis enables a broad distribution despite high mycorrhizal specificity. The Sebacina OTUs that are used by a range of Australian orchids occur on both sides of the continent, demonstrating that the short-range endemism prevalent in the orchids is not driven by fungal species with narrow distributions. Alternatively, a combination of specific edaphic requirements and a high incidence of pollination by sexual deception may explain biogeographic patterns in southern Australian orchids.  相似文献

Since 1956 were Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) kept in Berlin Zoo, counted in the period after 1945. The first offspring was born in 1964. Up to now 9 Gorillas were born in Berlin Zoo, of which 8 were raised, some of them artificial. The oldest Gorilla is “Fatou”, she is now in an age of 53.  相似文献

The frequencies of 4 behaviour patterns (lying down, comfort movements, scent-marking and social time) of two captive striped hyaenas collected by the one-zero-sampling method on 16 observations between May and December 1974 at the Zurich Zoological Garden were correlated with the local equivalent temperature (Teq). The frequencies of lying down and comfort movements increased with higher Teq (positive correlation), while scent-marking decreased (negative correlation). Social time was not affected by the prevailing thermal conditions.  相似文献

The emerging availability of microsatellite markers from mammalian sex chromosomes provides opportunities to investigate both male- and female-mediated gene flow in wild populations, identifying patterns not apparent from the analysis of autosomal markers alone. Tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii), once spread over the southern mainland, have been isolated on several islands off the Western Australian and South Australian coastlines for between 10 000 and 13 000 years. Here, we combine analyses of autosomal, Y-linked and X-linked microsatellite loci to investigate genetic variation in populations of this species on two islands (Kangaroo Island, South Australia and Garden Island, Western Australia). All measures of diversity were higher for the larger Kangaroo Island population, in which genetic variation was lowest at Y-linked markers and highest at autosomal markers (θ=3.291, 1.208 and 0.627 for autosomal, X-linked and Y-linked data, respectively). Greater relatedness among females than males provides evidence for male-biased dispersal in this population, while sex-linked markers identified genetic lineages not apparent from autosomal data alone. Overall genetic diversity in the Garden Island population was low, especially on the Y chromosome where most males shared a common haplotype, and we observed high levels of inbreeding and relatedness among individuals. Our findings highlight the utility of this approach for management actions, such as the selection of animals for translocation or captive breeding, and the ecological insights that may be gained by combining analyses of microsatellite markers on sex chromosomes with those derived from autosomes.  相似文献

For thousands of years, olive trees (Olea europaea L.) have been a significant presence and a symbol in the Garden of Gethsemane, a place located at the foot of the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem, remembered for the agony of Jesus Christ before his arrest. This investigation comprises the first morphological and genetic characterization of eight olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane. Pomological traits, morphometric, and ultrastructural observations as well as SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) analysis were performed to identify the olive trees. Statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate their morphological variability. The study revealed a low morphological variability and minimal dissimilarity among the olive trees. According to molecular analysis, these trees showed the same allelic profile at all microsatellite loci analyzed. Combining the results of the different analyses carried out in the frame of the present work, we could conclude that the eight olive trees of the Gethsemane Garden have been propagated from a single genotype.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to register the zooplanktonic organisms in water bodies in the Zoological Garden in Kraków, especially from a point of view of the occurrence of species of the Paramecium aurelia complex. Only P. caudatum was found in one habitat, in several sampling places. The species seems very resistant and can survive in poor or polluted habitats in which the P. aurelia ssp. are eliminated.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that isolates of Chattonella marina from Australia and Japan exhibit differences in tolerance to high intensities of visible light. Here we show that the Australian strain of C. marina produces around five times more UV-absorbing mycosporine amino acids (MAAs) than the Japanese strain. This corresponds with 66% increased growth by the Australian strain under UVB exposure compared to no UV exposure. The MAA mycosporine-glycine, which reportedly acts as an antioxidant, was found in high quantity (110 fg cell-1) in the Australian but was absent in the Japanese strain. In contrast, changes in the concentration of violaxanthin and zeaxanthin per cell were 4.7-4.8 times greater in the Japanese relative to the Australian strain suggesting that the Japanese strain uses a xanthophyll cycle to moderate inhibition by high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) irradiance. Increased MAA production under high irradiance was also observed in other Australian strains of Chattonella, but not noted in other Japanese strains suggesting ecophenotypic adaptation due to differing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Little is known about the behavior of the sitatunga. In order to learn more about their behavior, a group of sitatunga was studied at the Audubon Park and Zoological Garden. Courtship in the sitatunga begins with a male pursuing the female. The female occasionally stops, allowing the male to approach in the “low stretch” posture. If the female does not move away the male rests his chin on the female's rump and then mounts her. Males commonly horn branches, sticks, and turf. The possible functions of horning are discussed. Males also engage in sparring or “play-fighting.” Mutual grooming, vocalizations, and mother-young interactions of the sitatunga are described. The behavior of sitatunga is compared to that of other Tragelaphines.  相似文献

A Ph.D. dissertation completed by E.D. Cashatt in 1968 entitled “Revision of the Chrysauginae of North America” does not meet the criteria of publication so the new taxa described therein are not available per the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. In order to validate the taxa proposed in that document we formally describe and illustrate the following: Arta brevivalvalis Cashatt, sp. n., Heliades lindae Cashatt, sp. n., Paragalasa Cashatt, gen. n., Paragalasa exospinalis Cashatt, sp. n., and Penthesilea sacculalis baboquivariensis Cashatt, subsp. n. We summarize other taxonomic actions proposed in the dissertation and those proposed by subsequent authors. We provide the current nomenclatural status with the literature citation of the paper in which the current status was proposed. A lectotype is designated for Clydonopteran tecomae. Adult holotypes and associated labels, and genitalia of paratypes are newly illustrated.  相似文献

The aphid genus Nigritergaphis gen. n. is described, and N. crassisetosa sp. n. on Isodon eriocalyx (Dunn) Kudô (Lamiaceae) from Yunnan, China is described and illustrated. The new species curls and distorts the leaves of this important traditional Chinese medicinal plant, and is evidently specific to this host. Holotype and paratypes are deposited in the National Zoological Museum of China, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.  相似文献

Until now, unlike their relatives, rhinos and horses tapirs have received considerably less attention in studies about communication. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to test which stimuli contain acoustical information for tapirs. For this purpose, the reactions of tapirs on acoustical stimuli (playback of different animal voices) were examined. Research visits took place at the zoos of Berlin, Dortmund, Heidelberg, Munich, Nuremberg and Osnabrück during the year 2005. A total of 20 individuals, thereof 8 (4.4) Malayan tapirs (Tapirus indicus) and 12 (4.8) Lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) attended the experiments. The playback experiments showed that tapirs distinguish between the voices of different animal species. The results point to the conclusion that the reactions of the tapirs relate to phylogeny. The most intense interest was taken in their own species followed by the closely related ones.  相似文献

In the period from December 2002 to January 2003, 5 of 50 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) housed at a Zoological Garden in the Kanto region of Japan died following a few days' history of diarrhea. After this outbreak had ended in the squirrel monkeys, 1 of 2 dark-handed gibbons (Hylobates agilis) died in April of 2003, showing similar clinical signs. We examined the organs of 3 of the dead squirrel monkeys and of the dark-handed gibbon, and Yersinia enterocolitica serovar O:8, which is the most pathogenic serovar of Y. enterocolitica, was isolated. In order to determine the source and the transmission route of infection, 98 fecal samples (45 from squirrel monkeys, 20 from other monkeys of 18 different species, and 33 from black rats captured around the monkey houses) and 7 water samples were collected in the Zoological Garden, and were examined for the prevalence of Y. enterocolitica serovar O:8. Serovar O:8 was isolated from 21 of 65 monkeys (32.3%) and 5 of 33 (15.2%) black rats (Rattus rattus). Furthermore, we examined the 30 isolates using molecular typing methods, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), ribotyping using the RiboPrinter system, and restriction endonuclease analysis of virulence plasmid DNA (REAP), and compared the isolates in this outbreak with Japanese O:8 isolates previously identified. Genotyping showed that almost all the isolates were identical, and the genotype of the isolates was highly similar to that from wild rodents captured in Niigata Prefecture. This is the first report of fatal cases of Y. enterocolitica serovar O:8 infection in monkeys anywhere in the world.  相似文献

There has been a protracted debate over the evidence for intentional cranial modification in the terminal Pleistocene Australian crania from Kow Swamp and Coobool Creek. Resolution of this debate is crucial to interpretations of the significance of morphological variation within terminal Pleistocene-early Holocene Australian skeletal materials and claims of a regional evolutionary sequence linking Javan Homo erectus and Australian Homo sapiens. However, morphological comparisons of terminal Pleistocene and recent Australian crania are complicated by the significantly greater average body mass in the former. Raw and size-adjusted metric comparisons of the terminal Pleistocene skeleton from Nacurrie, south-eastern Australia, with modified and unmodified H. sapiens and H. erectus, identified a suite of traits in the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones associated with intentional modification of a neonate’s skull. These traits are also present in some of the crania from Kow Swamp and Coobool Creek, which are in close geographic proximity to Nacurrie, but not in unmodified H. sapiens or Javan H. erectus. Frontal bone morphology in H. erectus was distinct from all of the Australian H. sapiens samples. During the first six months of life, Nacurrie’s vault may have been shaped by his mother’s hands, rather than though the application of fixed bandages. Whether this behaviour persisted only for several generations, or hundreds of years, remains unknown. The reasons behind the shaping of Nacurrie’s head, aesthetics or otherwise, and why this cultural practice was adopted and subsequently discontinued, will always remain a matter of speculation.  相似文献

Caribbean flamingos were observed during the 1981 breeding season at the Audubon Zoological Garden in New Orleans, Louisiana. Two floods occurred during the breeding season, causing the flock to nest three times. At each new nesting there was a significant decline in the number of birds laying eggs. One pair brooded a chick during the final nesting. Immediately after hatching, the female usually brooded while the male defended the nest area; however, over the three-day period that the chick remained on the nest, the male began to spend more time brooding and less time defending the nest area. Thus there appeared to be some division of labor in this flamingo pair.  相似文献
