Natural abundance of 15N in tropical plants with emphasis on tree legumes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Natural abundance of 15N ( 15N) of leaves harvested from tropical plants in Brazil and Thailand was analyzed. The 15N values of non-N2-fixing trees in Brazil were +4.5±1.9, which is lower than those of soil nitrogen (+8.0±2.2). In contrast, mimosa and kudzu had very low 15N values (–1.4+0.5). The 15N values of Panicum maximum and leguminous trees, except Leucaena leucocephala, were similar to those of non-N2-fixing trees, suggesting that the contribution of fixed N in these plants is negligible. The 15N values of non-N2-fixing trees in Thailand were +4.9±2.0. Leucaena leucocephala, Sesbania grandiflora, Casuarina spp. and Cycas spp. had low 15N values, close to the value of atmospheric N2 (0), pointing to a major contribution of N2 fixation in these plants. Cassia spp. and Tamarindus indica had high 15N values, which confirms that these species are non-nodulating legumes. The 15N values of Acacia spp. and Gliricidia sepium and other potentially nodulating tree legumes were, on average, slightly lower than those of non-N2-fixing trees, indicating a small contribution of N2 fixation in these legumes.  相似文献

The extent of transfer of fixed N between N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing plant species is largely unknown in successional studies. In order to redress this deficiency at a locale intensively studied ecologically, leaf tissue samples were collected from actinorhizal N2-fixing (Alnus, Shepherdia, and Dryas) and two non-N2-fixing (Salix) woody species within research plots located along a chronosequence of deglaciated fjord in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. The tissue samples were analyzed for 15N content, and the resulting data analyzed for trends in plant tissue N. Among the non-N2-fixing Salix species, 15N values increased from the most recently deglaciated sites to converge with the temporally more-stable values for the symbiotic N2-fixing species on sites at about 40 years after deglaciation. The lower 15N values of sequestered N in plant tissues suggested that N derived from N2-fixing plants accounts for the major portion of N in associated plants up to 40 years after deglaciation. The 15N isotopic data also suggested that Shepherdia canadensis depends least on soil N, D. drummondii the most, and A. viridis ssp. sinuata somewhere between those two species. The presence of a sere dominated by dense thickets of A. viridis ssp. sinuata at the convergence of 15N values for the N2-fixing and non-N2-fixing species indicated that this species is most responsible for accumulation of fixed N in soil at Glacier Bay. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Steven J. Kohls who died prior to publication of this research.  相似文献

The measurement of natural 15N abundance is a well-established technique for the identification and quantification of biological N2 fixation in plants. Associative N2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from sugarcane and reported to contribute potentially significant amounts of N to plant growth and development. It has not been established whether Australian commercial sugarcane receives significant input from biological N2 fixation, even though high populations of N2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from Australian commercial sugarcane fields and plants. In this study, 15N measurements were used as a primary measure to identify whether Australian commercial sugarcane was obtaining significant inputs of N via biological N2 fixation. Quantification of N input, via biological N2 fixation, was not possible since suitable non-N2 fixing reference plants were not present in commercial cane fields. The survey of Australian commercially grown sugarcane crops showed the majority had positive leaf 15N values (73% >3.00, 63% of which were >5.00), which was not indicative of biological N2 fixation being the major source of N for these crops. However, a small number of sites had low or negative leaf 15N values. These crops had received high N fertiliser applications in the weeks prior to sampling. Two possible pathways that could result in low 15N values for sugarcane leaves (other than N2 fixation) are proposed; high external N concentrations and foliar uptake of volatilised NH3. The leaf 15N value of sugarcane grown in aerated solution culture was shown to decrease by approximately 5 with increasing external N concentration (0.5–8.0 mM), with both NO3 and NH4 + nitrogen forms. Foliar uptake of atmospheric NH3 has been shown to result in depleted leaf 15N values in many plant species. Acid traps collected atmospheric N with negative 15N value (–24.45±0.90) from above a field recently surface fertilised with urea. The 15N of leaves of sugarcane plants either growing directly in the soil or isolated from soil in pots dropped by 3.00 in the same field after the fertiliser application. Both the high concentration of external N in the root zone (following the application of N-fertilisers) and/or subsequent foliar uptake of volatilised NH3 could have caused the depleted leaf 15N values measured in the sugarcane crops at these sites.  相似文献

Annual N2-fixation in virgin forest ecosystems has been measured using a15N natural abundance (15N) procedure. This method was compared to a15N labelled fertilizer isotopic dilution method. For young alders (5–6 years old), 15N of leaves gave results in good agreement with the isotopic dilution of fertilizer method. Since 15N variability was expected according to plant physiology, for alder trees, leaves were collected at various heights after the end of the growing season, and, to take account of isotopic variations coming from derived inputs, 15N of leaves of a large number of other plants in the same are were measured to give control values. Following this procedure, the 15N method gave reliable evaluation of the nitrogen supply, by through N2-fixation, to alders, which were found to maintain high nitrogen fixing capacity in a sequence ranging from first stage of establishment of climactic formation. Moreover, the same method is reported to discriminate various origins ofAlnus glutinosa grown in natural conditions, possibly in relation to the genetic diversity of this species.  相似文献

To provide insight into the importance of the salt-marsh ecotone as a sink for inorganic nitrogen in perched groundwater, measurements were made of the natural abundance of 15N in dissolved NO3-N and NH4-N and in the salt-marsh halophyte, Salicornia virginica, along an environmental gradient from agricultural land into a salt-marsh. The increase in the natural abundance of 15N (expressed by convention as 15N) of NO3-N, accompanied by the decrease in NO3-N (and total dissolved inorganic N, DIN) concentration along the gradient, suggested that the salt-marsh ecotone is a site of transformation, most likely through denitrification, of inorganic nitrogen in groundwater. 15N enrichment in S. virginica (and the parasitic herb, Cuscuta salina), along the tidal marsh boundary, relative to high and middle marsh locations, indicated the retention of groundwater nitrogen as vegetative biomass. The correlation between 15N Salicornia and 15NNH4 suggested a preference for NH4-N over NO3-N during uptake by this plant. Groundwater inputs enhanced the standing crop, above-ground productivity, and nitrogen content of S. virginica but the ralative effects of pore water salinity and DIN concentration on these parameters were not determined. 15N enrichment of marsh plants by groundwater DIN inputs could prove useful in tracing the fate of these inputs in the marsh food web.  相似文献

In this paper we analysed autotrophic sources of the carbon ( 13C) and the trophic position ( 15N) of Leporinus friderici in the influence area of Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. We collected samples of muscles of fish from different sizes riparian vegetation, C4 grasses, zooplankton, periphyton and particulate organic carbon (POC). There were significant differences for the carbon isotope proportion found in muscles of L.friderici in the different size groups analysed. The highest values of 13C recorded for middle sized individuals is attributed to the large contribution of C4 plants in their diet. Small individuals sampled upstream also receive similar contribution from C4 plants. In contrast the same size group sampled downstream from the reservoir, has a much smaller of C4 plants. The 13C negative character of small individuals from downstream is due to the larger contribution of C3 plants (except periphyton). At larger sizes we found intermediate 13C values. The 15N proportions we found for each size group were not significantly different, however we found decreasing mean values with increasing size. The trophic level calculated from the dietary data was higher than that found with the 13C concentration in the muscle, except for small individuals, when the values were equal.  相似文献

Summary Carbon isotope composition, photosynthetic gas exchange, and nitrogen content were measured in leaves of three varieties of Metrosideros polymorpha growing in sites presenting a variety of precipitation, temperature and edaphic regimes. The eight populations studied could be divided into two groups on the basis of their mean foliar 13C values, one group consisting of three populations with mean 13C values ca.-26 and another group with 13C values ca.-28. Less negative 13C values appeared to be associated with reduced physiological availability of soil moisture resulting from hypoxic conditions at a poorly drained high elevation bog site and from low precipitation at a welldrained, low elevation leeward site. Gas exchange measurements indicated that foliar 13C and intrinsic wateruse efficiency were positively correlated. Maximum photosynthetic rates were nearly constant while maximum stomatal conductance varied substantially in individuals with foliar 13C ranging from-29 to-24. In contrast with the patterns of 13C observed, leaf nitrogen content appeared to be genetically determined and independent of site characteristics. Photosynthetic nitrogenuse efficiency was nearly constant over the range of 13C observed, suggesting that a compromise between intrinsic water- and N-use efficiency did not occur. In one population variations in foliar 13C and gas exchange with leaf cohort age, caused the ratio of intercellular to atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 predicted from gas exchange and that calculated from 13C to be in close agreement only in the two youngest cohorts of fully expanded leaves. The results indicated that with suitable precautions concerning measurement protocol, foliar 13C and gas exchange measurements were reliable indicators of potential resource use efficiency by M. polymorpha along environmental gradients.  相似文献

The effect of pH and transmembrane pH on the efficiency of the proton pump of the mitochondrialbc 1 complex bothin situ and in the reconstituted state was studied. In both cases the H+/e ratio for vectorial proton translocation by thebc 1 complex respiring at the steady state, under conditions in which the transmembrane pH difference (pH) represents the only component of the proton motive force (p), was significantly lower than that measured under level flow conditions. The latter amounts, at neutral pH, to 1 (2 including the scalar H+ release). In the reconstituted system steady-state pH was modulated by changing the intravesicular buffer as well as the intra/extra-liposomal pH. Under these conditions the H+/e ratio varied inversely with the pH. The data presented show that pH exerts a critical control on the proton pump of thebc 1 complex. Increasing the external pH above neutrality caused a decrease of the level flowH +/e ratio. This effect is explained in terms of proton/electron linkage inb cytochromes.  相似文献

15N natural abundances and N use by tundra plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Plant species collected from tundra ecosystems located along a north-south transect from central Alaska to the north coast of Alaska showed large and consistent differences in 15N natural abundances. Foliar 15N values varied by about 10% among species within each of two moist tussock tundra sites. Differences in 15N contents among species or plant groups were consistent across moist tussock tundra at several other sites and across five other tundra types at a single site. Ericaceous species had the lowest 15N values, ranging between about –8 to –6. Foliar 15N contents increased progressively in birch, willows and sedges to maximum 15N values of about +2 in sedges. Soil 15N contents in tundra ecosystems at our two most intensively studied sites increased with depth and 15N values were usually higher for soils than for plants. Isotopic fractionations during soil N transformations and possibly during plant N uptake could lead to observed differences in 15N contents among plant species and between plants and soils. Patterns of variation in 15N content among species indicate that tundra plants acquire nitrogen in extremely nutrient-poor environments by competitive partitioning of the overall N pool. Differences in plant N sources, rooting depth, mycorrhizal associations, forms of N taken up, and other factors controlling plant N uptake are possible causes of variations in 15N values of tundra plant species.  相似文献

Summary Foliar samples were obtained from symbiotic nitrogen-fixers and control plants (non-fixers) along elevational and primary successional gradients in volcanic sites in Hawai'i. Most control plants had negative 15N values (range-10.1 to +0.7), while most nitrogen-fixers were near 0. Foliar 15N in the native tree Metrosideros polymorpha did not vary with elevation (from sea level to tree-line), but it did increase substantially towards 0 on older soils. The soil in an 197-yr-old site had a 15N value of approximately-2, while in a 67000-yr-old site it was +3.6. We suggest that inputs of 15N-depleted nitrogen from precipitation coupled with very low nitrogen outputs cause the strongly negative 15N values in non-nitrogen-fixing plants on early successional sites.  相似文献

The natural abundance of the nitrogen isotope 15, 15N, was analysed in leaves of 23 subarctic vascular plant species and two lichens from a tree-line heath at 450 m altitude and a fellfield at 1150 m altitude close to Abisko in N. Sweden, as well as in soil, rain and snow. The aim was to reveal if plant species with different types of mycorrhizal fungi also differ in their use of the various soil N sources. The dwarf shrubs and the shrubs, which in combination formed more than 65% of the total above-ground biomass at both sites, were colonized by ericoid or ectomycorrhizal fungi. Their leaf 15N was between–8.8 and–5.5 at the heath and between–6.1 and –3.3 at the fellfield. The leaf 15N of non- or arbuscular mycorrhizal species was markedly different, ranging from –4.1 to –0.4 at the heath, and from –3.4 to+2.2 at the fellfield. We conclude that ericoid and ectomycorrhizal dwarf shrubs and shrubs utilize a distinct N source, most likely a fraction of the organic N in fresh litter, and not complexed N in recalcitrant organic matter. The latter is the largest component of soil total N, which had a 15N of –0.7 at the heath and +0.5 at the fellfield. Our field-based data thus support earlier controlled-environment studies and studies on the N uptake of excised roots, which have demonstrated protease activity and amino acid uptake by ericoid and ectomycorrhizal tundra species. The leaves of ectomycorrhizal plants had slightly higher 15N (fellfield) and N concentration than leaves of the ericoids, and Betula nana, Dryas octopetala and Salix spp. also showed NO inf3 sup- reductase activity. These species may depend more on soil inorganic N than the ericoids. The 15N of non- or arbuscular mycorrhizal species indicates that the 15N of inorganic N available to these plants was higher than that of average fresh litter, probably due to high microbial immobilization of inorganic N. The 15N of NH inf4 sup+ -N was +12.3 in winter snow and +1.9 in summer rain. Precipitation N might be a major contributer in species with poorly developed root systems, e.g. Lycopodium selago. Our results show that coexisting plant species under severe nutrient limitation may tap several different N sources: NH inf4 sup+ , NO inf3 sup- and organic N from the soil, atmospheric N2, and N in precipitation. Ericoid and ectomycorrhizal fungi are of major importance for plant N uptake in tundra ecosystems, and mycorrhizal fungi probably exert a major control on plant 15N in organic soils.  相似文献

The selfassociation of N6,N9-dimethyladenine and N6-dimethyl-N9-ethyladenine has been studied by means of NMR technique. The thermodynamic quantities have been calculated using an isodesmic NMR model with three NMR parameters (the monomer shift M and two complex shifts 2 and 3).The dependence of the thermodynamic quantities on the NMR parameters is discussed. Special attention is given to the determination of M and its temperature dependence.Calculations with 3=2· 2 and M taken independently of temperature result in an average entropy S =–17.9±1.8 e.u. for N6,N9-dimethyladenine and S =–16.7±1.7 e.u. for N6-dimethyl-N9-ethyladenine and in an average enthalpy H=–7.2±0.6 kcal· mol–1 for both substances investigated.Part of the Ph.D. Theses of W. Net N mineralization, nitrification, microbial biomass N and 15N natural abundance were studied in a toposequence of representative soils and plant communities in the alpine zone of the northern Caucasus. The toposequence was represented by (1) low-productive alpine lichen heath (ALH) of wind-exposed ridge and upper slope; (2) more productive Festuca varia grassland (FG) of middle slope; (3) most productive Geranium gymnocaulon/Hedusarum caucasicummeadow (GHM) of lower slope; (4) low-productive snowbed community (SBC) of the slope bottom. N availability, net N mineralization and nitrification were higher in soils of alpine grassland and meadow of the middle part of the toposequence compared with soils of lichen heath and snowbed community of extreme habitats in the alpine zone. There was no correlation between intensities of N transformation processes and favorable (low soil acidity, low C/N ratio, long vegetation period, relatively high temperature, absence of hydromorphic features) and unfavorable (opposite) factors, indicating that the intensity of N mineralization and nitrification in the alpine soils is controlled by a complex combination of these factors. Potential net N mineralization and nitrification in alpine soils determined in the short-term laboratory incubation were considerably higher than those determined in the long-term field incubation. The differences of potential nitrification between soils of various plant communities did not correspond to the field determined pattern indicating the importance of on-site climatic conditions for control of nitrification in high mountains. The result of comparison of N transformation potentials in incubated and native soils indicated that nitrification potential was significantly increased after long-term soil incubation. It means that net nitrification determined in the field was probably overestimated, especially in the meadow soils. A soil translocation experiment indicated that low temperature was an important factor limiting net N mineralization and nitrification in alpine soils: net N mineralization and especially nitrification increased when alpine soils were translocated into the subalpine zone and mean annual temperature increased by about 3°C. Additional N input increased N availability (NH4 +-N) and potential nitrification in soils of the lower part of the toposequense (GHM and SBC), and potential net N mineralization in two soils of extreme habitats (ALH and SBC). A positive correlation was found between soil 15N and net N mineralization and nitrification; the relative 15N enrichment was characteristic of grassland and meadow ecosystems. 15N of total soil N pool increased during the field mineralization experiment; there was a positive tendency between the change in 15N and net N mineralization and nitrification, however the relationship was not significant. Foliar 15N of dominant plant species varied widely within community, however, a tendency of higher foliar 15N for species growing on the soils with higher net N mineralization, nitrification and 15N was observed.  相似文献

Measurement of nitrogen isotopic composition (15N) of plants and soil nitrogen might allow the characteristics of N transformation in an ecosystem to be detected. We tested the measurement of 15N for its ability to provide a picture of N dynamics at the ecosystem level by doing a simple comparison of 15N between soil N pools and plants, and by using an existing model. 15N of plants and soil N was measured together with foliar nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and the foliar NO3 pool at two sites with different nitrification rates in a temperature forest in Japan. 15N of plants was similar to that of soil NO3 in the high-nitrification site. Because of high foliar NRA and the large foliar NO3 pool at this site, we concluded that plant 15N indicated a great reliance of plants on soil NO3 there. However, many 15N of soil N overlapped each other at the other site, and 15N could not provide definitive evidence of the N source. The existing model was verified by measured 15N of soil inorganic N and it explained the variations of plant 15N between the two sites in the context of relative importance of nitrification, but more information about isotopic fractionations during plant N uptake is required for quantitative discussions about the plant N source. The model applied here can provide a basis to compare 15N signatures from different ecosystems and to understand N dynamics.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions where both plants had permanently low water status, the mistletoe, Amyema miquelii (Lehm. ex Miq.) Tiegh., had lower nitrogen contents in leaf tissue than its host, Eucalyptus behriana F. Muell. The parasite transpired less than its host which is consistent with the hypothesis that mistletoe transpiration acts as a nitrogen gathering mechanism. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents were generally low in both plants; they were positively correlated, and mistletoes reduced nutrient contents of infested hosts. The carbon discrimination ratio, 13C (a measure of water-use efficiency) of each plant was within the range reported for other mistletoes and their hosts. Although it did not differ significantly between host and parasite it indicated lower water-use efficiency in the mistletoe. For the nitrogen content of host leaves the gradient within the pair, (13C), is much lower compared to the correlation given by Ehleringer et al. (1985). It is concluded that at permanently low water status on nitrogen and phosphorus deficient soils a water-saving strategy accompanied with slow growth is more appropriate for both mistletoe and host.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of conglutin has been studied in developing cotyledons of Lupinus angustifolius L. Precursors of conglutin formed the major sink for [35S]-cysteine incorporated by developing lupin cotyledons, and these precursors were rapidly sequestered into the endoplasmic reticulum. The sequence of a cDNA clone coding for one such precursor of conglutin was determined. The structure of the precursor polypeptide for conglutin predicted from the cDNA sequence contained an N-terminal leader peptide of 22 amino acids directly preceding a subunit polypeptide of M r 4520, together with a linking region of 13 amino acids and a subunit polypeptide of M r 9558 at the C-terminus. The amino acid sequence predicted from the cDNA sequence showed minor variations from that established by sequencing of the protein purified from mature dried seeds (Lilley and Inglis, 1986). These were consistent with the existence of a multi-gene family coding for conglutin . Comparison of the sequences of conglutin with those of other 2S storage proteins showed that the cysteines involved in internal disulphide bridges between the mature subunits of conglutin , were maintained throughout this family of proteins but that little else was conserved either at the protein or DNA level.  相似文献

Estimates of nitrogen fixation by trees on an aridity gradient in Namibia   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary Nitrogen (N2) fixation was estimated along an aridity gradient in Namibia from the natural abundance of 15N (15N value) in 11 woody species of the Mimosacease which were compared with the 15N values in 11 woody non-Mimosaceae. Averaging all species and habitats the calculated contribution of N2 fixation (N f ) to leaf nitrogen (N) concentration of Mimosaceae averaged about 30%, with large variation between and within species. While in Acacia albida N f was only 2%, it was 49% in Acacia hereroensis and Dichrostachys cinerea, and reached 71% in Acacia melifera. In the majority of species N f was 10–30%. There was a marked variation in background 15N values along the aridity gradient, with the highest 15N values in the lowland savanna. The difference between 15N values of Mimosaceae and non-Mimosaceae, which is assumed to result mainly from N2 fixation, was also largest in the lowland savanna. Variations in 15N of Mimosaceae did not affect N concentrations, but higher 15N-values of Mimosaeae are associated with lower carbon isotope ratios (13C value). N2 fixation was associated with reduced intrinsic water use efficiency. The opposite trends were found in non-Mimosaceae, in which N-concentration increased with 15N, but 13C was unaffected. The large variation among species and sites is discussed. This paper is prepared in memory of J. Visser, who took part in the collection of species, but died in 1990  相似文献

Differences in leaf 13C among four dominant species as well as the species-specific response to the fluctuations of either soil moisture or monthly mean temperature were examined along a secondary succession sere with a time scale from 3 to 149 y on the Loess Plateau in north-western China. We used leaf 13C as a surrogate for water use efficiency (WUE) of the mentioned dominant species. Bothrichloa ischaemun as a dominant species in the final succession stage belongs to C4 photosynthesis pathway, while the other three dominant species occurring in the first three succession stages belong to C3 pathway. The overall trend of leaf 13C variation among the three C3 species was Artemisia gmelinii (in the third stage) and Lespedeza davurica (in the second stage) > Artemisia scoparia (in the first stage). This suggests that species with higher WUE (more positive leaf 13C) would have substantial competitive advantages in the context of vegetation succession. Furthermore, species with highest WUE (i.e. C4 pathway) have great potential to be dominant in the final succession stage in the habitats (such as the study area) undergoing strong water stress in growing season. The evolution of WUE among the dominant species occurring in different succession stages strongly depends on the time scale of given stage since abandonment. The longer the time scale is, the more significant the differences among them in terms of leaf 13C, hence WUE. Our results support the notions that leaf 13C may be more positive when water supply is less favourable.  相似文献

In the area of Jumla region in Western Nepal, measurements of saturated leaf net photosynthetic rate (Psat), nitrogen content, leaf fluorescence, carbon isotopic composition, and water status were performed on woody coniferous (Pinus wallichiana, Picea smithiana, Abies spectabilis, Juniperus wallichiana, Taxus baccata), evergreen (Quercus semecarpifolia, Rhododendron campanulatum), and deciduous broadleaved species (Betula utilis, Populus ciliata, Sorbus cuspidata) spreading from 2 400 m up to the treeline at 4 200 m a.s.l. With the exception of J. wallichiana, Psat values were lower in coniferous than broadleaved species. Q. semecarpifolia, that in this area grows above the coniferous belt between 3 000 and 4 000 m, showed the highest Psat at saturating irradiance and the highest leaf N content. This N content was higher and Psat lower than those of evergreen oak species of tempe forests at middle and low altitudes. For all species, Psat and N content were linearly correlated, but instantaneous nitrogen use efficiency was lower than values measured in lowland and temperate plant communities. The values of carbon isotopic composition, estimated by 13C, showed the same range reported for temperate tree species. The ranking of 13C values for the different tree types was conifers < evergreen broadleaved13C were found along the altitudinal gradient. Quantum yield of photochemistry at saturating irradiance, measured by leaf fluorescence (F/Fm), was highest in J. wallichiana and lowest in T. baccata. Overall, photochemical efficiency was more strongly related to species than to altitude. Interestingly, changes of .F/Fm along the altitudinal gradient correlated well with the reported altitudinal distribution of the species. This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the page numbers.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of ecosystem composition and structure (species richness and diversity, cover and spatial attributes of vegetation), abiotic factors (climate and topographical features) and the condition of the bare-ground areas (evaluated using soil-surface indicators) on the performance of Stipa tenacissima [evaluated using foliar 13C, 15N, nitrogen concentration and the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio] in 15 steppes of SE Spain. Foliar 13C values of S. tenacissima showed a low degree of variation in the studied steppes, with average values ranging from –24.1 to –22.9. Higher variation was found in the 15N values, which ranged from –5.5 to –2.4. The nitrogen concentration and the C:N ratio varied between 5.0 and 8.0 mg g–1, and between 55.4 and 85.3, respectively. The 13C values became less negative with increasing spatial aggregation of perennial vegetation, while the C:N values increased with increasing perennial vegetation cover. The 15N values became more negative with increasing infiltration in the bare-ground areas, but the nitrogen concentration was not related to any of the environmental variables measured. Our results suggest that the relative importance of ecosystem structure and soil-surface conditions in the bare ground areas was higher than that of abiotic factors as determinants of the performance of S. tenacissima. The results also show that even subtle changes in these ecosystem features may lead to modifications in plant performance in semiarid S. tenacissima steppes, and thus to modifications in the associated ecosystem functions in the mid- to long-term.  相似文献
