Life history and habitat use of Norwegian brown trout (Salmo trutta)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
SUMMARY. 1. Brown trout ( Salmo trutta) life history and habitat use were studied in two Norwegian rivers: the Vosso river system, western Norway, and the Søre Osa, eastern Norway.
2. Age-groups were partly segregated in feeding habitats, the youngest fish living mainly in running water and in the littoral zone of lakes, the older fish also exploiting pelagic waters and deeper epibenthic habitats. In a population with free access to and from the sea, some individuals smoltified and became sea-run migrants, performing yearly migrations to the coastal sea, whereas others stayed as freshwater residents throughout their entire life span.
3. Within local populations, females were larger and less variable in size than males. This was partly because females matured at an older age than males, partly because the sexes tended to exploit feeding habitats with different food and growth Conditions. Within age-groups, females were more pelagic and migrated more than males, whereas males were more confined to running water and epibenthic areas than females. In the pelagic zone, males were more abundant in near-surface water, and females more abundant in deeper areas. When exploiting the same feeding areas, the two sexes grew at the same rate. There therefore appears to be a connection between feeding habitat and the reproductive ecology of brown trout.  相似文献

SUMMARY. .1. Chalkstream trout are fast-growing, short-lived with a stable age structure that is a consequence of the lack of extremes in the abiotic environment, especially of water temperature and flow.
2. Levels of secondary (invertebrate) production arc high and there is no evidence that interspecific or intraspecific competition for food resources limits growth.
3. Dietary studies show a broad similarity between trout and other species, but indicate differences that reflect variations in the micro-habitat distributions between fish species.
4. Trout numbers appear to be limited initially by the availability of gravel spawning areas, and then by areas suitable for newly-emerged fry. Reduction in stream discharge in the spring, either naturally or by man, can lower the number of 0+ trout that survive.
5. Eels are not important predators on trout eggs or fry. but a reduction in pike numbers can lead to a decrease in the mean weight of pike. Small pike do not pose a serious threat to stocked yearling trout.  相似文献

1. Pyrenean brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) from 200 to 1700 g were analysed in lots of 12 specimens in March, April, July and October 1988, and in January 1989. 2. Hormones (insulin, glucagon, cortisol) and metabolites (glucose, lactate, proteins, triglycerides) were determined in plasma. 3. Body parameters (length and weight) increased progressively, while plasma metabolites and hormones were more dependent on seasonal and sexual conditions. 4. Plasma insulin presented a maximum in spring (11 ng/ml) and a minimum in January (5 ng/ml). A clear relationship between insulin and annual growth rates was established. Plasma glucagon showed annual values between 700 and 1500 pg/ml, with significant seasonal variations. The molar ratio glucagon/insulin oscillated from 0.21 in January to 0.38 in July. 5. Plasma glucose variations agreed with those of pancreatic hormones, especially evident with glucagon levels. Proteins were more uniform throughout year, and plasma lipids were especially associated to the reproductive state in females.  相似文献

In Italian freshwaters the introgressive hybridization with the alien Atlantic trout represents the principal threat to the native endangered Mediterranean trout. The aim of the research was to test the effectiveness of alien trout removal activities carried out by electrofishing in four streams in Central Italy. The four sites were chosen on the basis of the severe genetic introgression level of the trout populations. The removal activities were carried out from December 2014 to July 2017, for a total of 10 eradication campaigns in each site. During each field activity, five environmental parameters (flow rate, conductivity, average depth, average width, accessibility) were collected, since they could influence both the effectiveness of the electrofishing and the biological characteristics of the fish populations. A total of over 22,000 alien trout accounting for a biomass of over 700 kg were removed from the removal sites. For each site, a progressive drastic decrease over time in density and standing crop values was observed. Removal rates ranged from 94.22% to 100.00% for density, and from 96.57% to 100.00% for standing crop. The correlation analysis showed an inverse significant relationship between catchability and populations abundance, confirming that low density populations are more suitable to removal efforts. The progressive removal of specimens improved the catchability over time, indicating that even the largest populations could be eradicated, providing the necessary number of steps in a fishing season. The improved body condition and the greater growth rates observed during the eradication period, in low abundance conditions, seemed to confirm the key role that intraspecific competition and density-dependent phenomena play in the Apennine trout population dynamics. The results obtained in the present research provided evidence that electrofishing removal could be an effective management tool for the Mediterranean trout conservation, especially in watercourses of modest dimensions in terms of flow rates, width and depth.  相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-linked microsatellite data and parental assignment data for a group of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) provide evidence of closer spatial aggregation among fry sharing greater numbers of MHC class I alleles under natural conditions. This result confirms predictions from laboratory experiments demonstrating a hierarchical preference for association of fry sharing MHC alleles. Full-siblings emerge from the same nest (redd), and a passive kin association pattern arising from limited dispersal from the nest (redd effect) would predict that all such pairs would have a similar distribution. However, this study demonstrates a strong, significant trend for reduced distance between pairs of full-sibling fry sharing more MHC class I alleles reflecting their closer aggregation (no alleles shared, 311.5 ± (s.e.)21.03 m; one allele shared, 222.2 ± 14.49 m; two alleles shared, 124.9 ± 23.88 m; P<0.0001). A significant trend for closer aggregation among fry sharing more MHC class I alleles was also observed in fry pairs, which were known to have different mothers and were otherwise unrelated (ML-r = 0) (no alleles: 457.6 ± 3.58 m; one allele (422.4 ± 3.86 m); two alleles (381.7 ± 10.72 m); P<0.0001). These pairs are expected to have emerged from different redds and a passive association would then be unlikely. These data suggest that sharing MHC class I alleles has a role in maintaining kin association among full-siblings after emergence. This study demonstrates a pattern consistent with MHC-mediated kin association in the wild for the first time.  相似文献

In a series of experiments, kin-biased behavior of young browntrout (Salmo trutta) was observed. The toxicity of fluoride to brown trout fry (Salmo trutta) was tested using groups of 100 animals in tapwater containing 29 ppm calcium with sodium fluoride added. Resultts obtained were similar to published work on S. gairdnerii although, taking into account the ‘calcium effect’, it appears that the animals used in this investigation may be more sensitive.  相似文献

1. Degradation of stream habitat because of anthropogenic activities (e.g. channelisation) has had a dramatic impact on fluvial environments and their biota, and as a consequence, increasing effort has been directed towards the restoration of degraded rivers. However, a major problem is that the success (or failure) of restoration has been rarely tested using a well‐designed monitoring programme to allow reliable detection of an impact, if any exists. We used a spatially and temporally replicated, balanced Before‐After‐Control‐Impact design to assess the impact of stream habitat rehabilitation on the densities and growth of brown trout of three age‐classes in North Finnish forest streams. 2. Three separate sections in each of six streams were selected for the study. After 3 years of pre‐rehabilitation monitoring, two randomly selected sections in each stream were restored; one using large woody debris and boulders and the other using only boulders. A third section remained as an unmodified control. Monitoring of fish densities continued for 3 years after rehabilitation. 3. Rehabilitation clearly increased streambed complexity, but did not have detectable effects on brown trout stocks in either of the rehabilitation schemes (LWD or stones), except for age‐2+ and older fish which decreased in abundance compared to control reaches. A severe drought after rehabilitation in late summer 2002 reduced densities of trout to a low level in all streams, overriding any local effects of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation structures seemed to provide some safeguard against drought for age‐2 and older, but not for the younger age‐classes. 4. Our results add to the growing body of literature suggesting that large‐scale regional factors may overwhelm local management efforts. To be successful in the future, stream rehabilitation schemes must include drought refuge areas for fish and other stream biota.  相似文献

The rivers of the island of Corsica, whose catchment areas are on crystalline rock, have low salt contents and their invertebrate fauna is qualitatively and quantitatively poorer than on the European mainland. The growth rate of trout in Corsica was analysed on samples from of six coastal rivers: the Tavignano, the Fium Orbo and the Golo on the west coast, the Prunelli, the Taravo and the Rizzanese on the east coast. Mesological data — conductivity, temperature, calcium content and altitude and biological data — biomass and linear growth rate of the trout, and density of benthic invertebrates — were collected at each of the sampling station.Analysis of variance of the size of three year old trout revealed three groups of rivers. The first includes the Tavignano, the Rizzanese and the Taravo, where the highest linear growth rates were recorded; the second consists of the Golo and the Prunelli, and the third, of the Fium Orbo. Principal component analysis gave two main axes on the basis of temperature and benthic invertebrate density for the first, and trout biomass for the second. Linear regression showed that benthic invertebrate density accounted for 75% of size variance of three year old trout. Evidence of the limiting role of the trophic factor is provided.  相似文献

Synopsis Brown trout (Salmo trutta) were more efficient than Arizona trout (Salmo apache) in eating brine shrimp at starlight (10–4 fL) light levels. Arizona trout required light levels moonlight (10–3 fL) to feed. In bright light (50 fL), brown trout utilized cover to a much greater extent in both field and laboratory. Our study indicates that factors other than competition for food or habitat are probably causing the displacement of Arizona trout by brown trout when browns are stocked into the native habitat of Arizona trout.  相似文献

1. The present study was designed to characterize the genetic structure of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) populations from the southern Balkans and to assess the spread of non-native strains and their introgression into native trout gene pools. We analysed polymorphism at nine microsatellite loci in seven supposedly non-admixed and three stocked brown trout populations.
2. The analyses confirmed the absence of immigration and extraordinarily strong genetic differentiation among the seven non-introgressed populations in parallel with low levels of intrapopulation genetic variability. In contrast, analyses of the stocked populations revealed that the genetic integrity of the local populations had been substantially changed, and the populations must be characterized as hybrid swarms. The pattern of population differentiation observed at microsatellites contrasted to that depicted previously by mtDNA variation. However, the close relationships between populations from the Danube and Axios river systems proposed solely by microsatellites could be explained by palaeogeographic events.
3. Our research showed that most of the populations examined represent unique gene pools, whose existence is critically compromised. Therefore, appropriate management and conservation strategies should be developed urgently in order to protect the subspecific biodiversity and to reverse currently negative trends.  相似文献

Brown trout, Salmo trutta, were allowed to thermoregulate individually in an electronic shuttlebox. Pooled data for 6 fish showed a diel pattern of preferred temperature, with a diurnal minimum of 10.3°C, an early nocturnal maximum of 13.7°C, a less pronounced mid-scotophase minimum of 11.7°C, and a secondary dawn maximum of 12.8°C, in a somewhat crepuscular pattern. Epizootics in brown trout have been observed in the course of the last three years in a fish farm in the North West of the Fed. Rep. Germany. Only in 1988 sick fish exhibited the typical pathological signs as described for the viral hemorrhagic septicemia of trout. The virus isolated from moribund and healthy looking brown trout was identified as VHSV strain F1.

Fischsterben während der letzten drei Jahre bei unter teichwirtschaftlichen Bedingungen produzierten Bachforellen, wurden in einem Forellenzuchtbetrieb im Nord-Westen der Bundesrepublik Deutsch-land beobachtet. Während der ersten zwei Jahre (1986/1987) zeigten die Fische keine eindeutigen klinischen Symptome und waren virologisch und bakteriologisch negativ; 1988 zeigten die erkrankten Fische pathologisch anatomische Anzeichen, wie sie für die virale hämorrhagische Septikämie beschrieben worden sind. Das von kranken sowie von gesundaussehenden Bachforellen isolierte Virus wurde als VHSV-F1 identifiziert.

Summary The annual and diurnal activity cycle for four naturally feeding brown trout separately confined in netting cages on the bed of Windermere is described. All the fish showed a similar annual cycle of maximum activity during May and June, one fish showing a second activity peak during the autumn. The fish also showed a similar diurnal activity rhythm of low activity during the night and increased activity during the day with a pronounced increase at dawn.The possible influence of light and temperature on the fishes activity is briefly discussed.  相似文献

1. Brown trout ova were imported during the last century from different locations in Europe to establish populations in Chilean rivers (South America). The rivers are currently occupied by naturalized populations that have adapted to very different environmental conditions, such as areas of semi-desert in the north, or rainy and cold areas in the south.
2. In this first study in this geographical area, electrophoretic variability of proteins encoded by twenty-five loci was screened in seven populations from northern to southern Chile.
3. The results show significant heterogeneity of allelic frequencies between populations in seven of eleven polymorphic loci detected. The estimated value of genetic diversity 0.1274 ( H T) is higher than that observed in populations from areas of natural distribution of this species. However, only 12.64% of this genetic diversity was found between samples ( G ST), indicating a low genetic divergence among Chilean populations. The observed associations among the Chilean and 'modern' group of European populations suggests the probable origin of the new populations.  相似文献

1. Reproductive traits were studied in seven wild populations of resident brown trout in Spain. We examined whether growth, and certain environmental conditions such as water temperature or food abundance, could explain interpopulation variation in the reproductive characters.
2. The results indicated that nearby populations subjected to a wide variation in environmental conditions exhibited a similar reproductive performance.
3. Age distributions and sex ratios were not significantly different among populations. Age ranged from 0+ to 4+ years but the populations were dominated by the 0+ to 2+ groups. In all rivers females matured at age 2+ as opposed to age 1+ and 2+ for males. Mean length at the end of the growth period differed significantly among populations. However, annual growth rate was similar among rivers and was not significantly correlated with either biomass of the benthos or water temperature during the growth season.
4. Reproductive effort, body condition, fecundity and egg size did not correlate significantly with either the abundance of benthic invertebrates or water temperature. Once the effect of body length on both egg size and number was removed, a significant negative correlation was found between these two traits among populations.  相似文献

Anadromous trout Salmo trutta exhibits sexual size dimorphism (SSD); females were larger than males in populations where male mean total length (LT) at maturity was below 49 cm and females were smaller than males when mean male LT was above 49 cm, the slope of the regression of female on male LT was 0·59. In streams with mean annual discharge below 41 m3 s?1, flow added significantly to a model with SSD as the dependent variable and male mean LT at maturity as the first predictor variable. There was a slight increase in SSD with increasing latitude, which may result from an increase in male size with increasing latitude.  相似文献

We studied reproductive traits in nine anadromous brown trout, Salmo trutta L., populations in seven Norwegian rivers. Within populations we found a positive significant correlation between fish length and fecundity in all populations, and between fish length and egg diameter in five populations. There were significant differences in these relationships between populations from different rivers, and between populations from different locations within rivers. When adjusted for variation in fish length, mean fecundity and mean egg diameter showed a negative significant correlation among populations. The ratio of gonadal weight to somatic weight (gonadosomatic index) varied significantly among populations but was not associated with variation in fish length. Comparatively few large eggs were found in brown trout populations co-existing with several other fish species.  相似文献

Corsica is a Mediterranean island characterised by a great number of rivers. Salmonides are the main fishes which populate these rivers. Very appreciated by fishermen, Salmonides are represented by three species in the insular hydrographical network, among which an autochthonous species, the brown trout (Salmo trutta). In the present work, we have analysed the parasitofauna of this species. According to our knowledge, this research has never been carried out in Corsica. In a first step, we drew up an inventory of the parasites found in this freshwater fish. In a second step, we studied the differences which appeared in the composition of parasite communities of this species.  相似文献

Brown trout were collected from 36 locations inthe Iberian Peninsula representing thesouthwestern extreme of this species'distribution in Mediterranean drainages.Allelic distributions among these peripheralpopulations for 26 polymorphic allozyme loci(corrected to remove effects of introgressionfrom exogenous hatchery introductions)indicated a mosaic pattern both within andamong drainages. This distribution wasinterpreted to reflect reticular evolutionaryprocesses involving multiple colonizationepisodes by distinct lineages, secondaryintergradations, and drift. Under thisscenario, management to conserve native genepools differs from that commonly used underhierarchical structures (such as in AtlanticIberian drainages) where geographic patternscould justify regional stocking of indigenousfish in adjacent unsampled areas. Because suchaction risks erosion of native populations inthe present case, remedial efforts should focuson habitat recovery and environmental educationprograms, and harvest sustained by naturalreproduction.  相似文献
