The assignment of tiny valvatiform gastropods from the Early Meotian and Early Chokrakian to Skenea Fleming, 1825, a genus of marine gastropods of the superfamily Trochoidea is substantiated. The embryo development conforms to the Asterad type or Megarchetype II. A single cotyledon called scutellum is derived from the entire tierl. Streptanthus tortuosus Kell. suspension cells will grow in a medium with sucrose as carbohydrate source. It was investigated whether the cells are able to take up sucrose or whether sucrose has to be hydrolyzed to glucose and fructose which eventually are taken up. The detailed quantitative analysis of sugar-uptake rates in the low concentration range up to 1 mM showed the following features: (i) There is definitely no sucrose-uptake system working in the low concentration range; any uptake of radioactivity from labelled sucrose proceeds via hydrolysis of sucrose by cell-wallbound invertase. (ii) Hexoses are taken up by two systems, a glucose-specific system with a K m of 45 M and a high V max for glucose and a K m of 6 mM and a low V max for fructose, and a fructosespecific system with a K m of 500 M and high a V max for fructose and a K m of 650 M and a low V max for glucose. (iii) There is a more than tenfold preference for uptake of the fructose derived from sucrose versus uptake of free fructose, with the result that the kinetic disadvantage of the fructoseuptake system compared to the glucose-uptake system is diminished if sucrose is supplied as the carbon source. Summary The Highlands County, Florida populations of the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus L., represent a putative subspecies, P. g. australis Maynard. The only foodplant ever reported in southern half of Florida is sweetbay, Magnolia virginiana L. (Magnoliaceae). In fact, there are apparently no other reported foodplants for the polyphagous tiger swallowtail species which exist in southern Florida. These ecologically monophagous P. g. australis populations were studied in order to determine whether or not significant behavioral and biochemical adaptations in the larvae are detectable as a result of the ecological specialization on sweetbay. These results suggest an emphatic yes. On sweetbay, neonate larval survival of these Florida populations is the best of any other population tested from across North America. In addition, penultimate instar larval growth rates are significantly faster on sweet bay than any other foodplant tested. Furthermore, these biochemical adaptations to sweetbay by P. g. australis in Florida are accompanied by a significantly poorer neonate survival and growth performance on northern foodplants (most notably the Salicaceae and Betulaceae). Reciprocal inabilities of the northern subspecies, P. g. canadensis, and the western P. rutulus to utilize sweetbay are described, as well as the reciprocal inabilities of two congeneric and sympatric (Florida) species, Papilio palamedes and Papilio troilus, that have specialized on another bay (redbay, Persea borbonia; of the Lauraceae). It remains uncertain to what degree such apparent negative genetic correlations in foodplant adaptations represent a driving force in the formation of host races or species, especially since so little is known about oviposition preferences of Papilio glaucus across North America. In Florida we have an apparently strict ecological monophagy coupled with a degree of reproductive isolation that has resulted in its tentative classification as a subspecies, P. g. australis. The role of foodplants in the speciation process can be significant even for P. glaucus, the most polyphagous of all 563 species of world Papilionidae. It remains uncertain whether the significant differences in detoxication and biochemical processing abilities observed in this study were evolved in parapatry or allopatry. Disjunct populations of P. alexiares in Mexico retain some ability to detoxify sweetbay, as do some individuals in most P. glaucus glaucus populations tested from ten different states north of Florida.  相似文献

 A spectacular mound-like reef formation (126 m in circumference, 10 m high) dominated by highly arched and record-size colonies of the unattached mushroom coral Halomitra pileus, along with 17 other species of the family Fungiidae, occurs in 31 m of water on the sedimentary lagoon floor of the Great Astrolabe Reef, Fiji. Core samples show radiocarbon dates which indicate that the formation hypothetically began building ∼4500 y ago, with a calculated mean accretion rate of 2.2 mm ⋅ y-1. The majority of fossil and living material is contributed by H. pileus colonies between 40–70 cm mean diameter, with some individuals up to 1.5 m in diameter. The size, fungiid diversity, and geological history of the bioherm is unprecedented and represents the first example of a coral reef constructed almost entirely by Fungiidae. Halimeda bioherms occur as extensive geological structures on the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia. We present the most complete, high-resolution spatial mapping of the northern GBR Halimeda bioherms, based on new airborne lidar and multibeam echosounder bathymetry data. Our analysis reveals that bioherm morphology does not conform to the previous model of parallel ridges and troughs, but is far more complex than previously thought. We define and describe three morphological sub-types: reticulate, annulate, and undulate, which are distributed in a cross-shelf pattern of reduced complexity from east to west. The northern GBR bioherms cover an area of 6095 km2, three times larger than the original estimate, exceeding the area and volume of calcium carbonate in the adjacent modern shelf-edge barrier reefs. We have mapped a 1740 km2 bioherm complex north of Raine Island in the Cape York region not previously recorded, extending the northern limit by more than 1° of latitude. Bioherm formation and distribution are controlled by a complex interaction of outer-shelf geometry, regional and local currents, coupled with the morphology and depth of continental slope submarine canyons determining the delivery of cool, nutrient-rich water upwelling through inter-reef passages. Distribution and mapping of Halimeda bioherms in relation to Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority bioregion classifications and management zones are inconsistent and currently poorly defined due to a lack of high-resolution data not available until now. These new estimates of bioherm spatial distribution and morphology have implications for understanding the role these geological features play as structurally complex and productive inter-reef habitats, and as calcium carbonate sinks which record a complete history of the Holocene post-glacial marine transgression in the northern GBR.

Detailed C-banded karyotypes of eight diploidArtemisia species from three different sections are reported together with preliminary observations on three additional related diploid species. In the majority, the overall amount of banding is relatively low. Bands are mostly confined to distal chromosome regions; intercalary banding is virtually absent and centromeric heterochromatin is also scarce. With the exception ofA. judaica there is in general great uniformity in karyotype structure but considerable interspecific variation in total karyotype length (and hence DNA content) ranging from 44 µm inA. capillaris (2n = 18) to 99 µm inA. atrata (2n = 18).A. judaica (2n = 16; total karyotype length 97 µm) was distinguished by its karyomorphology, with one large non-banded metacentric chromosome pair and 7 pairs of smaller terminally banded meta- or submetacentric chromosomes.  相似文献

A 1-min light pulse delivered to mustard seedlings (Sinapis alba L.) 60 h after sowing initiates the release of cotyledonary 5-aminolaevulinate (ALA) accumulation which continues for at least 2 h in the dark. Phytochrome (P fr) increases the rate of ALA accumulation after a 24-h red light pretreatment but is not the trigger for this release. It is shown that the rate of ALA accumulation varies with the wave-length and fluence rate of the 1-min light pulse and can be predicted from the degree of protochlorophyll-(ide) photoconversion. There is a linear correlation between the rate of ALA accumulation and the degree of protochlorophyll(ide) (PChl)chlorophyll(ide) a (Chl a) photoconversion in etiolated seedlings. In seedlings pretreated with red light this correlation is non-linear and the rate increases more rapidly with increasing degrees of PChlChl a photoconversion. Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella repens was evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance and absence. P. repens is one of the most common bryozoan species in Norway. It is represented at 227 localities in our material and by 29 additional records. The species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71°09N (the northernmost record on the European mainland). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1052 m (maximum for Northern Europe). P. repens preferred lakes, avoided rivers, and was absent from the smallest water bodies. The species preferred (1) low elevation (2–200 m above sea level), (2) medium water temperature, (3) rich aquatic vegetation (eutrophic conditions), (4) small wave action, (5) high content of calcium and magnesium, (6) pH 6.4–9.6, and (7) rather high water colour. Otherwise P. repens avoided (1) habitats above 500 m but occurred up to 1052 m, (2) the lowest water temperature intervals, (3) sites with poor aquatic vegetation and stony shores, (4) medium wave action, (5) sites with a low calcium and magnesium content, (6) lakes of low water colour, and (7) lakes with pH below 6.6: it was absent from lakes with pH below 5.2. For many environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere. P. fungosa, P. casmiana, and P. emarginata are all rare in Norway. The total numbers of known localities, with our records in (), are 18 (11), 7 (7), and 7 (5), respectively. These sites are all from lowland areas up to 133 m above sea level. Environmental variables in the habitats are described. P. fungosa was represented by a single floatoblast in each of the four northernmost lakes where it was recorded. One of these lakes was in North Norway some 1000 km away from the nearest known sites with living colonies. The presence of large colonies of P. fungosa in some parts of southern Norway and only `single floatoblast lakes' further north is discussed in relation to the equilibrium theory of island biogeography: birds facilitate immigration by carrying floatoblasts and environmental conditions prevent their germination and the development of living colonies. All records of P. casmiana and P. emarginata were from South Norway. Results for P. fruticosa have been published previously. Notes are given on an old and now missing sample from ca. 1900, identified by Lacourt (1968) as Hyalinella punctata – the only record of this species from Norway.  相似文献

为精确地识别藜属植物染色体组的核型特征,该文研究了4种来自青海高原的野生藜属植物(灰绿藜、藜、菊叶香藜及杂配藜)和1种从美国引进的栽培藜麦品种PI614932-HX(3)基于染色体荧光原位杂交(rDNA FISH)的核型。利用5S rDNA和45S rDNA对5种藜属植物有丝分裂中期的染色体进行FISH研究。藜属植物的核型分析结果表明:(1)藜属植物中存在二倍体(2n=2x=18)和四倍体(2n=4x=36)两种倍性,藜麦和灰绿藜为四倍体,其余3种为二倍体。(2)藜麦、灰绿藜、藜、菊叶香藜及杂配藜的核型公式分别为2n=4x=36=34m(2AST)+2sm,2n=4x=36=32m(4AST)+4sm,2n=2x=18=16m(4AST)+2sm,2n=2x=18=18m及2n=2x=18=16m+2sm。(3)染色体由大部分的中部着丝粒染色体(m)和少部分近中部着丝粒染色体(sm)组成。(4)核型类型除了菊叶香藜为1B以外,其余均属于2B类型。(5)在藜麦、灰绿藜及藜中具有分布位置不同、数量不等的双随体。5S rDNA、45S rDNA FISH结果表明:(1)藜麦和灰绿藜的染色体上存在2对5S rDNA位点和1对45S rDNA位点,藜、杂配藜的染色体上存在1对5S rDNA位点和1对45S rDNA位点,菊叶香藜的染色体上只存在1对5S rDNA位点。(2)5S rDNA和45S rDNA位点均位于染色体的短臂上。该研究首次获得了藜属植物基于5S rDNA和45S rDNA荧光原位杂交核型,为藜属植物亲缘关系研究和细胞生物学研究提供了分子细胞遗传学依据。  相似文献

-potential of mesophyll protoplasts of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), petunia (Petunia hybrida Hort.), turnip (Brassica rapa L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walpers) was determined by use of a cell electrophoresis apparatus. All protoplasts examined showed a constant negative value of-10 to-35 mV. The addition of CaCl2 nullified the -potential of tobacco protoplasts. This phenomenon is explained by DLVO theory of colloid science, which has been successfully applied to animal cells. Furthermore, positively charged polymers reversed the -potential to positive values. Treatment of the protoplast surface with several enzymes was carried out to characterize the chemical nature of suface charges. The removal of surface charges was most conspicuous by the treatment of acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2), but did not occur upon treatment with -neuraminidase (EC 3.2.1.18) or Streptomyces griseus pronase. Thus a major part of the surface charge originates from the phosphate groups at the cell membrane. The significance of these studies for the properties of the protoplast surface in cell adhesion is discussed.  相似文献

The stromacentre, a particular structure in the plastids of mostAvena species, was isolated from etioplasts ofAvena sativa and then characterized to determine its biological function. When comparing differentAvena species with or without stromacentre, it was shown that the stromacentre, a 63-kDa protein, and saponins (characteristic compounds ofAvena sativa) either occur together or not at all. This linkage was confirmed by demonstrating a transformation of saponins by the isolated stromacentre protein: avenacosides were hydrolyzed to 26-desgluco-avenacosides. Therefore, the stromacentre protein had to be regarded as a-glucosidase. Enzyme assays usingp-nitrophenyl--d-glucopyranoside as substrate showed that this-glucosidase has a pH optimum at pH 6.0. The calculatedK m value for this substrate was 2.2·10-3 M. Antibodies against the stromacentre protein inhibited-glucosidase activity. The determination of the molecular weight of the-glucosidase by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis showed that it consists of subunits of 63 kDa. After gel electrophoresis under non-denaturing conditions, enzymatically active molecules were shown to consist of at least two of these subunits. Molecules aggregated up to about 106 Da also had enzyme activity. Enzyme assays using avenacosides as substrate showed a pH optimum at pH 6.0. The calculatedK m value for this substrate was 1.2·10-5 M. The high affinity to the avenacosides and the high specificity for the C-26 bound glucose indicate that avenacosides are the natural substrates for this-glucosidase. Assuming that the avenacosides in oat leaves play a role as preformed chemical inhibitory substances against phytopathogenic microorganisms, a model is presented showing the stromacentre with a central role in activating the fungitoxicity of avenacosides.  相似文献

Extensive areas of Halimeda bioherms similar to those described by Orme et al. (1978), Orme (1985), Davies and Marshall (1985), and Phipps et al. (1985) from Australia's Great Barrier Reef have formed on Kalukalukuang Bank (K-Bank) 50 km east of the Sunda Shelf margin in the easter Java Sea. K-Bank is an isolated limestone platform whose top slopes southward from a water depth of about 20 m at the north to about 100 m at the south (30 km). It occurs in a bidirectional monsoonal wind regime and a predominantly southerly flowing current from Makassar Strait. The water column around K-Bank has a well developed shallow thermocline (50 m to 150 m). K-Bank has a relatively flat top with marginal banks of suspected Pleistocene origin as interpreted from seismic relationships. A reconnaissancelevel survey grid of high-resolution seismic profiles indicates that Halimeda bioherms are restricted to the bank margins with the exception of the eastern margin. Bioherms either extend to the steep margin of the platforms or are separated from the platform edge by banks of coral and coralline algae. The morphology of the Halimeda bioherms varies from steep-sided, elongate ridges in the northern bank area, through coalescing symmetrical mounds with partly infilled valleys, to broad undulating areas similar to those described by Orme (1985) from the Great Barrier Reef. High-resolution seismic records indicate erosional episodes in the high-relief areas, an interpretation that seems to be supported by accumulation rates calculated from C14 dates of cores. Thicknesses of Halimeda accumulation above a prominent reflector considered as Pleitocene, vary from around 20 m in the north to a maximum of over 50 m in the southwest. Accumulation rates obtained from dating of two cores to-ward the north of K-Bank, average 0.294 m/100 yr for core VC4 and a maximum of 0.59 m/100 yr in a part of core PC12. Dating of material from the top 30 cm of a deep bioherm (100 m) in the southwest of K-Bank, indicates that the growth rate of these bioherms has slowed markedly, presumably because of increasing water depth (decreasing light) over the Holocene transgression.  相似文献

The appearance of cavities and holes in fronds of commercially cultivated Chondrus crispus is described. These ultimately arise from the ravages of a green spot or green rot disease system in which several biotic agents can participate. Nematodes capable of bacterial grazing were recovered from necrotic lesions and we suggest that the nematodes can facilitate wound healing in diseased tissues. Bacteria isolated from disease lesions and from the surfaces of healthy fronds were screened for pathogenic strains. A particularly virulent one, the DOR isolate, was purified from small dark orange colored colonies grown on dilution plates. It was present in necrotic tissue and also recovered from surface scrapings of old healthy fronds, but not from their apical regions. Growth of the DOR isolate appeared to be inhibited by other bacteria colonizing the algal surface. It was shown to be a facultative pathogen, the virulence of which depended on the availability of ammonium or constituents easily metabolized to ammonium. It induced green rot disease in healthy C. crispus and was recoverable in pathogenic form from experimentally infected frond apices. A wound, disease and recovery cycle is discussed to illustrate potential interrelationships involving animal grazers, algal endophytes, Petersenia pollagaster, bacteria and nematodes.  相似文献

A new bothid flounder, Engyprosopon marquisensis, is described from 11 specimens collected in deep waters (108–408 m) off the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia) during the French exploratory cruise MUSORSTOM 9 in 1997. Engyprosopon marquisensis is similar to E. bellonaensis from the Chesterfield Islands and Bellona Plateau in the Coral Sea and E. vanuatuensis from off Vanuatsu Island, but is easily distinguished from E. bellonaensis by the following combination of characters: narrow interorbital space in both sexes, small mouth, short caudal fin, large number of vertebrae, and fewer gill rakers. It differs from E. vanuatuensis by many scales in the lateral line, small eyes, short ocular-side upper jaw, and short blind-side lower jaw. Engyprosopon marquisensis is the deepest occurring (408 m) species of the genus, and constitutes the second species of this genus with an eastern distribution.  相似文献

Plastic and elastic in-vitro extensibilities (E pland E el ) of cell walls from growing maize (Zea mays L.) coleoptile segments were measured by stretching frozen-thawed tissue, pre-extended to its in-vivo length, at constant force (creep test) in a custom-buildt extensiometer, equipped with a linear-displacement transducer. The indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-induced change of E pl (E pl ) is strictly correlated with the growth rate for a period of 3–4 h. Subsequently, E plremains constant while the growth rate is slowing down. Since this discrepancy can be accounted for by a growth-dependent reduction of osmotic pressure, it is concluded that E plrepresents quantitatively the relative increase of in-vivo extensibility (cell wall loosening) involved in IAA-mediated cell growth over a much longer time. On the other side it is argued that the growth rate may not be strictly correlated with wall extensibility during long-term growth. Abscisic acid (ABA) inhibits segment growth induced by auxin, fusicoccin, or exogenous acid, and this effect can be quantitatively attributed to an ABA-mediated reduction of cell wall extensibility as determined by the E plmeasurement. Both, IAA and ABA have no effect on total protein synthesis, RNA synthesis, and amount of osmotic solutes. Fusicoccin-induced proton excretion is only slightly inhibited by ABA. In contrast to ABA, growth inhibition by cycloheximide (CHI) is always much larger than the concomitant reduction of E pl , indicating that a further growth parameter is also involved in the inhibition of cell growth by CHI. E el is not affected by either IAA, ABA, or CHI. It is concluded that E pl as determined by the applied method, represents a relative measure of the actual in-vivo extensibility of the growing cell wall at the very moment when the tissue is killed, rather than an average extensibility accumulated over some immediate-past period of time as suggested by Cleland (1984, Planta 160, 514–520). The Middle Jurassic of the Intermediate Domain, in the northern Subbetic (External zones of the Betic Cordillera, SE, Spain), reveals the transition from hemipelagic limestones (Baños Formation) to overlying shallow-water oolitic limestones (Jabalcuz Formation). Near La Guardia (Jaén), the basal part of the succession that records this transition comprises clast-supported calcareous breccias 24 m thick. Transverse sections reveal a fan shape close to a normal fault. The upper parts of some breccia beds were colonized by bivalve patches that locally evolve to bivalve-serpulid bioherms. The bioherms are massive, with low relief and a metre-scale lenticular shape. Two main parts have been differentiated: a bivalve bioherm and a serpulid bioherm. The bivalve bioherm consists of densely packed mytiloids in life position with secondary serpulids, where the matrix is a grainstone of bioclasts, peloids, and ooids. Laterally, there are accumulations of reworked bivalves. The serpulid bioherm is made up of serpulid aggregates in a bioclast wackestone. On an unstable slope with abundant breccias, bioherm development took place in favourable periods of low sedimentation rate. The pioneer colonisers of the sea-bottom were mytiloid bivalves in relatively high-energy waters. Shell comissures were aligned parallel to the dip of the slope as an adaptation to feeding from the plankton and seston inputs associated with palaeocurrents. The intercalation of reworked bivalve beds likely indicates brief periods of higher-energy storm events. The serpulid bloom in the upper part of the buildups was probably related to a stage of low-energy conditions (as evidenced by the delicacy of these structures), which is congruent with the wackestone texture. The relief provided by the bivalves favoured the development of the serpulid bioherm phase in an elevated and advantageous position for suspension-feeding. The dense packing in these bioherms offered clear advantages in this unstable palaeoenvironment: (1) dense populations are less susceptible than isolated individuals to overgrowth by other sessile organisms or predator attacks; and (2) the interconnection among individuals enhances stability and resistance against high-energy events, and increases the growth potential of future generations. The interruption of bioherm growth was probably related to the deposition of new breccia beds and reworked oolitic limestones.  相似文献
