The photosymbiotic ascidian Diplosoma simile is characterized by a wide global distribution. The current study provides the first record of D. simile in the Red Sea, with remarks on its spatial distribution and phylogeny. Partial COI and 18S rDNA sequences of D. simile from the Red Sea revealed high similarity to those from the West Pacific, indicating a much broader range than previously recorded. In the Red Sea D. simile is common on natural coral reefs at depths ranging from 1–35 m. Diplosoma simile colonies were found to overgrow and would appear to suffocate several species of live stony corals, though this does not appear to cause mass coral mortality in the Red Sea, unlike that recorded in other locations.  相似文献

To survive, corals possess a variety of active and passive defenses. This study examined the effectiveness of aggregation and cnidae development as defensive strategies in enhancing post-settlement survival and growth of two brooding corals, Favia fragum and Porites astreoides, in Bermuda. Growth and survival of solitary and aggregated spat were monitored over seven weeks; cnidae were extracted from surviving spat. F. fragum aggregated spat had higher mortality, slower growth, and more cnidae than solitary spat. On the other hand, aggregation proved beneficial for P. astreoides spat, which had significantly lower mortality, faster growth, and fewer cnidae. Aggregated and solitary F. fragum spat displayed negative correlations between cnidae density and growth, suggesting a trade-off between defense and growth; however, P. astreoides spat did not demonstrate such a trade-off. These differing responses suggest that early patterns of survivorship and defensive strategies are highly species specific and complex.  相似文献

  • 1 In the laboratory, the growth and reproduction of Anuraeopsis fissa were measured when fed on Scenedesmus species grown in nutrient‐sufficient, nitrogen‐limited and phosphorus‐limited media and in the presence or absence of one adult Daphnia longispina per vial.
  • 2 Poor food quality may reduce the effect of competition on rotifers. Competition from Daphnia was stronger with nutrient sufficient algae than with nutrient limited algae. P‐limitation significantly reduced Anuraeopsis population growth rate and fecundity. The effect of nutrient limitation on Anuraeopsis was stronger than that of competition with Daphnia. The Anuraeopsis population declined with P‐limited food in both the presence and absence of Daphnia.
  • 3 Exploitative competition by Daphnia on Anuraeopsis was stronger in the nutrient‐sufficient treatment than in the N‐limited one. Density, fecundity and population growth rate of Anuraeopsis were negatively affected by Daphnia in the nutrient‐sufficient treatment, while only fecundity was reduced by Daphnia in the N‐limited treatment. Consequently, in the N‐limited treatment, mortality should be lower in the presence of Daphnia. This result could suggest that Anuraeopsis lives longer when short of nitrogen.
  • 4 Nutrient limitation may affect to the competitive interactions between zooplankton species. P‐limitation decreased the quality of algae as food for Anuraeopsis while N‐limitation decreased the susceptibility of this rotifer species to exploitative competition by Daphnia.

This study examined the effect of single, double, and triple matings on female lifetime fecundity in two closely related species of beetle, Callosobruchus analis and C. maculatus. Multiple mating resulted in elevated lifetime fecundities in both species, although the pattern of elevation differed between the two species. When oviposition resource was plentiful the elevation was apparent after a second but not a third copulation for C. maculatus and after a second and after a third for C. analis. By altering the availability of oviposition sites to C. maculatus females, we were able to alter the pattern of fecundity elevation between matings. When oviposition sites were limited, fecundity increased after a third mating but not a second mating. We suggest that the pattern of fecundity elevation associated with multiple mating in these species is primarily the result of oviposition stimulants delivered by males, rather than a nutritional donation brought about by the metabolism of ejaculates. We also suggest that the intra- and interspecific differences in the relationship between mating frequency and fecundity are the result of differences in egg maturation rates.  相似文献

A suite of functionally-related characters and demography of three species of Neotropical shadeadapted understory shrubs (Psychotria, Rubiaceae) were studied in the field over five years. Plants were growing in large-scale irrigated and control treatments in gaps and shade in old-growth moist forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Irrigation demonstrated that dry-season drought limited stomatal conductance, light saturated photosynthesis, and leaf longevity in all three species. Drought increased mortality of P. furcata. In contrast, irrigation did not affect measures of photosynthetic capacity determined with an oxygen electrode or from photosynthesis-CO2 response curves in the field. Drought stress limited field photosynthesis and leaf and plant survivorship without affecting photosynthetic capacity during late dry season. Leaves grown in high light in naturally occurring treefall gaps had higher photosynthetic capacity, dark respiration and mass per unit area than leaves grown in the shaded understory. P. furcata had the lowest acclimation to high light for all of these characters, and plant mortality was greater in gaps than in shaded understory for this species. The higher photosynthetic capacity of gap-grown leaves was also apparent when photosynthetic capacity was calculated on a leaf mass basis. Acclimation to high light involved repackaging (higher mass per unit leaf area) as well as higher photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf mass in these species. The three species showed two distinct syndromes of functionally-related adaptations to low light. P. limonensis and P. marginata had high leaf longevity (3 years), high plant survivorship, low leaf nitrogen content, and high leaf mass per unit area. In contrast, P. furcata had low leaf survivorship (1 year), high plant mortality (77–96% in 39 months), low leaf mass per unit area, high leaf nitrogen content, and the highest leaf area to total plant mass; the lowest levels of shelf shading, dark respiration and light compensation; and the highest stem diameter growth rates. This suite of characters may permit higher whole-plant carbon gain and high leaf and population turnover in P. furcata. Growth in deep shade can be accomplished through alternative character syndromes, and leaf longevity may not be correlated with photosynthetic capacity in shade adapted plants.  相似文献

Effect of fourteen different nitrogen sources on five species ofSphaeropsis i. e.S. cactinae, S. cycadis, S. jodhpurensis, S. muehlenbeckiae andS. punicae, obtained respectively from the infected parts ofCitrus medica, Cycas circinalis, Cordia gharaf, Muehlenbeckia platycladoes andPunica granatum was studied, under cultural conditions on Asthana and Hawker's Medium A by substituting its nitrogen with equal quantity of an other nitrogen source. All the present species reproduced well on potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate. None of the present species could grow on sodium nitrite. Out of all amino acids, no one was found to be excellent for the growth and sporulation of the present fungi. Most of the amino acids supported poor growth and sporulation of three of the five species ofSphaeropsis, S. cactinae, S. cycadis andS. punicae on L-asparagine, Glycine, L-cystine and L-alanine. Maximum and minimum pH for growth and sporulation ranged from 6.5 to 7.8 and 5.3 to 4.2 respectively. Decrease in adjusted pH was also observed for all the species on L-asparagine and DL-valine.  相似文献

Partitioning of nitrogen among species was determined in a stand of a tall herbaceous community. Total amount of nitrogen in the aboveground biomass was 261 mmol N m–2, of which 92% was in three dominant species (Phragmites, Calamagrostis and Carex) and the rest was in the other eight subordinate species. Higher nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf area (n L) with increasing photosynthetically active photon flux density (PPFD) were observed in all species except for three short species. The changes in n L within species were mainly explained by the different nitrogen concentrations per unit leaf mass, while the differences in n L between species were explained by the different SLM (leaf mass per unit leaf area). Photon absorption per unit leaf nitrogen ( N ) was determined for each species. If photosynthetic activity was proportional to photon absorption, N should indicate in situ PNUE (photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency). High N of Calamagrostis (dominant) resulted from high photon absorption per unit leaf area ( area ), whereas high N of Scutellaria (subordinate) resulted from low n L although its area was low. Species with cylinder-like leaves (Juncus and Equisetum) had low N , which resulted from their high n L. Light-saturated CO2 exchange rates per unit leaf area (CER) and per unit leaf nitrogen (potential PNUE) were determined in seven species. Species with high CER and high n L (Phragmites, Carex and Juncus) had low potential PNUE, while species with low CER and low n L showed high potential PNUE. NUE (ratio of dry mass production to nitrogen uptake) was approximated as a reciprocal of plant nitrogen concentration. In most species, three measures of nitrogen use efficiency (NUE, N and potential PNUE) showed strong conformity. Nitrogen use efficiency was high in Calamagrostis and Scutellaria, intermediate in Phragmites and relatively low in Carex. Nitrogen use efficiency of subordinate species was as high as or even higher than that of dominant species, which suggests that growth is co-limited by light and nitrogen in the subordinate species.  相似文献

The effect of geographical differences in breeding cycles on the recruitment variation of the limpets — Patella vulgata L., P. aspera Röding and (to a limited extent) P. depressa Pennant — has been studied over much of their range in Britain and NW. Europe. In spite of considerable annual and local variation in recruitment success, broader patterns can be distinguished, which can be linked to spawning times and factors affecting the survival of newly-settled spat. The breeding cycles of P. vulgata and P. aspera differ across their ranges in that, in both species, spawning begins, and gametogenesis ends, earlier in the north and east than in the south and west. The cause of these differences can be correlated with geographical and annual differences in sea temperature over the potential breeding periods, and can be related to the regional incidence of conditions found experimentally to be necessary for successful settlement and survival of spat during a critical stage of their growth. The significance of this temperature window in determining the littoral and geographical distribution of the species is discussed.  相似文献

Two bacteriophages (Brb01 and Brb02), lytic toBacteroides ruminicola ssbrevis AR20, were isolated from sewage water. Both phages possessed polyhedral heads and long noncontractile tails, and were classified as Siphoviridae of morphotype B1. Bacteria resistant to phages Brb01 and Brb02 arose following lysis of broth cultures. Survivors of Brb01 infection were capsulated but remained susceptible to Brb02 infection. Survivors of Brb02 infection were noncapsulated and were resistant to attack by both Brb01 and Brb02. Neither phage lysogenized the host. Both phages contained double-stranded DNA, and their restriction endonuclease digestion patterns indicated that the phage genomes were circularly permuted and terminally redundant. Phage Brb01 genome was examined in greater detail and confirmed to be circularly permuted, of size 33 kb, with a terminal redundancy of 2 kb, or 6% of the length of the genome. Circularly permuted genomes in phages of rumen bacteria do not appear to have been reported previously. At present, there is considerable interest in the genetic manipulation of rumen bacteria. The characterization of the phages described herein provides the basic information required for their use in the construction of vectors for the transfer of genetic material.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Larval gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.) mortality depends upon the number and type of plant species consumed as well as the sequence in which they are consumed.
  • 2 When a two-species diet is composed of a favourable and an unfavourable species, larval mortality is higher on the two-species diet than on the diet of the favourable species alone.
  • 3 When a two species diet is composed of a favourable and unfavourable coniferous species, larval mortality is higher on the single conifer species diet than on the two-species diet.
  • 4 Two-species diets, in which one species is a conifer, produce individuals with a greater fecundity than diets of either species alone.
  • 5 The influence of diets composed of two favourable species, on development, size and fecundity, depends both on the relative quality of each of the two plant species and which of the two is consumed by older instars.

The effect of N supply on shoot and leaf lifespan was investigated in established stands of four herbaceous Carex species which differed in maximum dry matter production. These species were, in rank order of increasing maximum dry matter production (per unit ground area): Carex diandraC. rostrata. The observed patterns of shoot and leaf turnover were compared with data on leaf characteristics and nitrogen use efficiency indices of these species. There was no consistent difference in shoot production (number of shoots produced per unit ground area) between species with low production and those with high production: Carex diandra (low production) and C. lasiocarpa (high production) had high shoot production, while shoot production in c. rostrata (low production) and C. acutiformis (high production) was much lower. The rank order of the mean lifespan of shoots was: C. diandra. Thus, the lifespan of shoots increased with increasing maximum dry matter production of these Carex species. In all species, increased N supply led to a significant reduction in shoot lifespan. The reduction of shoot lifespans in response to enhanced N supply will result in increased nutrient turnover rates in these species. There was no consistent difference in the number of leaves produced per shoot between low-production and high-production species. C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa had relatively low leaf production, while C. rostrata and C. acutiformis had relatively high leaf production per shoot. Thus, this pattern is opposite to the pattern in shoot production. The rank order of the mean lifespan of leaves was: C. diandra. This implies that the high-production species had longer mean leaf lifespans than the low-production species. Mean leaf lifespan was not significantly affected by enhanced N supply, except in C. diandra, where leaf lifespan decreased in response to enhanced N supply. Shoot lifespans did not show any significant relation with the specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit leaf mass) or the leaf area ratio (LAR, leaf area per unit plant mass) of the species under study. There was, however, a negative relation (r 2=0.71) with the nitrogen concentration in the leaves. Shoot lifespans were positively related (r 2=0.79) with whole-plant nitrogen use efficiency (NUE, dry matter production per unit N-loss) and with the mean residence time of nitrogen (MRT, the average time-span during which a unit of nitrogen is present in the plant) (r 2=0.78), but not with the nitrogen productivity (A, annual dry matter production per unit N in the plant). Leaf lifespan was positively related with the mean residence time of nitrogen in the plants (r 2–0.70). For all the other parameters, there were no significant relations with leaf lifespan. From these results we conclude that: (1) at the stand level, shoot and leaf lifespans are positively related with maximum dry matter production; and (2) shoot and leaf lifespan are important determinants of whole-plant nitrogen economy.  相似文献

Three different species of marine diatoms, Nitzschia closterium (Ehr) Smith, Chaetoceros sp. (Ehr) and Skeletonema costatum (Grev) Cleve, were isolated from the Adriatic sea and studied in vitro for the production of extracellular carbohydrates. Variations of the nitrogen (N)/phosphorus (P)/silicon (Si) ratios in the growth medium affect the accumulation and release of carbohydrates. In the N.closterium cultures at high N/P ratio, the rate of extracellular polysaccharide release was higher both in rapidly growing cells (2.14 g per 106 cells day-1 and in stationary phase (1.0 g per 106 cells day-1) compared to S.costatum and Chaetoceros sp. Instead, at low N/P ratios, S.costatum and Chaetoceros sp. produced large amounts of extracellular polysaccharides during the logarithmic phase, compared to N.closterium, with values of 10 g per 106 cells day-1 for S.costatum and 2.8 g per 106 cells day-1 for Chaetoceros sp., respectively; in particular, only S.costatum was able to produce extracellular carbohydrates (1.2 g per 106 cells day-1) during the stationary phase of growth. Under Si limitation, any of the three diatom species produce extracellular polysaccharides both in the logarithmic and stationary phase of growth. The potential ecological significance of these findings is discussed.   相似文献

We quantified: (1) growth rate, (2) length-mass relationships, (3) size- and age-specific fecundity, (4) egg size-frequencies, and (5) size- and age-specific egg diameter relationships for reproductively active female C. bairdi from one of the southern-most extant populations of this species (Coweeta Creek drainage, North Carolina). Gravid females were collected during February and March in 1993–1995, and 1998. Cottus bairdi reached an age of 7+ and 79mm standard length. The youngest and smallest gravid female collected was a 41mm 1+ individual. Mature 1+ females were not uncommon and we collected 21 during our study. All females older than age 2 were mature. Mean fecundity for C. bairdi at Coweeta was 71 eggs (range 9–166 eggs). We found significant positive relationships between fecundity and female length, weight and age. Female length and weight also significantly affected mean egg diameter, although the relationship was not linear. Neither female size or age significantly affected mean maximum egg diameters. Female C. bairdi from the Coweeta Creek drainage possess a unique suite of reproductive characteristics that may represent adaptations to the local selective regime or ecophenotypic variation.  相似文献

Since their recent introductions into Florida waters, three sessile invertebrates [Perna viridis (Asian green mussel), Mytella charruana (charru mussel) and Megabalanus coccopoma (pink titan acorn barnacle)] have expanded their range along the Atlantic coast in estuarine waters. Little research has been done to understand how these nonnative species interact with the ecologically and economically important eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. To assess the potential effects of P. viridis, M. charruana and M. coccopoma on C. virginica, the following questions were addressed in manipulative experiments. (1) Does the presence of nonnative species decrease oyster larval settlement? (2) Do oyster larvae avoid settling on nonnative species? (3) Do nonnative species decrease survival of juvenile oysters (spat)? (4) Do nonnative species hinder spat growth? We included two controls: absence of nonnative species and presence of the native mussel Geukensia demissa. The nonnative species influenced settlement, growth and survival of C. virginica in different ways. M. coccopoma and P. viridis negatively influenced larval settlement, whereas M. charruana had no influence on the total number of settled larvae. Oyster larvae avoided settling on all three nonnative species and the native G. demissa. Both nonnative mussels negatively affected survival of juvenile oysters but only M. charruana also reduced spat growth. The native mussel, G. demissa, had no negative impacts on total settlement, survival and growth of C. virginica; in fact, it increased larval settlement in some trials. These three nonnative species should be classified as invasive because all had negative effects on native C. virginica.  相似文献

As part of a research programme on the food chains in Tjeukemeer, the Daphnia hyalina and Daphnia cucullata populations were studied for three successive years. To analyse the factors regulating the production of these two species, their population parameters (density, size distribution, fecundity) and population dynamics (birth rate, mortality rate) were studied and related to environmental factors. Since Daphnia in Tjeukemeer shows continuous recruitment, the population dynamics model INSTAR was developed and used to integrate field data with laboratory data on development rates and length-weight relationships. The dynamics of the Daphnia species are mainly regulated by temperature and fish predation, the latter affects both birth rate and mortality. Total annual Daphnia production was 3.1–6.9 g org. dry wt M–2, and annual P/B ratio ranged from 25 to 40 for D. cucullata and from 45 to 49 for D. hyalina.  相似文献

Summary Seasonality in the reproduction of Ekmocucumis steineni and Psolus dubiosus (Holothuroidea) from the Antarctic shelf was investigated. The material was collected in spring (October/November) and autumn (mainly February) in the southeastern Weddell Sea. For E. steineni differences between both seasons in relative female fecundity and relative gonad weight were found in both sexes. Large yolky oocytes (0.3–1.0 mm in diameter) forming 1–3 cohorts were present in spring, nearly none in autumn. A delayed or prolonged spawning is possible, depending on the locality. No seasonal differences were found in P. dubiosus, a brood-protecting species with a lower fecundity and larger eggs (1.5 mm in diameter). A longer spawning phase in P. dubiosus than in E. steineni (October to January) is suggested. Both species are suspension feeders and their intestines were more filled with organic material in autumn than in spring. However, the occurrence of mature oocytes was not directly linked with the seasonal availability of food. The size-frequency distribution of the entire material in the study area was heterogeneous, indicating differences in long-term environmental conditions. The data show an evolutionarily more evolved high Antarctic mode of reproduction in P. dubiosus with a prolonged reproductive period than in E. steineni which has a distinct annual spawning cycle.  相似文献

Twenty-seven species of common seaweeds from the coast of Korea havebeen screened for antifouling activity. The seaweed extracts were tested inlaboratory assays against the marine fouling green alga Enteromorphaprolifera and the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. Tissue growth, sporesettlement, zygote formation and germlings of the E. prolifera wereinhibited by methanol extracts of the seaweed Ishige sinicola (= I. foliacea) and Sargassum horneri. Spore settlement was stronglyinhibited by using extract concentrations as low as 30 g mL-1with I. sinicola and 120 g mL-1 with S. horneri. The repulsive activity of the foot of the mussel was completely inhibited bymethanol extracts of I. sinicola and Scytosiphon lomentaria atconcentrations of 40 g per 10 L drop supplied to eachmussel. These extracts also showed strong antifouling activities onlarval settlement with, respectively, no or only 6% of the spat settlingwhen a test concentration of 0.8 mg mL-1 was used. This work isthe first stage towards the development of novel antifouling agents frommarine macroalgae.  相似文献

Hennhöfer, D., Götz, S. & Mitchell, S.F. 2012: Palaeobiology of a Biradiolites mooretownensis rudist lithosome: seasonality, reproductive cyclicity and population dynamics. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 450–461. During the Cretaceous, rudist bivalves were among the most important benthic carbonate producers on tropical to sub‐tropical carbonate platforms. Yet questions concerning the biology of rudist bouquets remain unanswered to a great extent. In this study a monospecific bouquet of the small radiolitid rudist Biradiolites mooretownensis has been evaluated from a palaeobiological angle. Three‐dimensional, high‐resolution, quantitative analysis provides a detailed evaluation of growth and reproduction in an in situ rudist association. A total of 1237 consecutive tomograms with a vertical spacing of 0.1 mm were produced of which 1150 have been digitally measured for total area, number of specimens, packing density, spat density, recruitment, survival time, mortality and accommodation space. The results show constant coverage of about 60%, a stable packing density of 3.2 specimens per cm2 and constant reproduction throughout the bouquet. Time series analysis (spectral analysis) using PAST statistical software shows cyclic spat density every 14.9 mm of vertical growth. Combined with the results of the δ18O isotope analysis (showing cyclicities of 14 mm) one reproduction cycle appears to be annual. 46.4% of all counted specimens died before 3 mm of vertical growth. More than 93% of the initial spat does not exceed 15 mm shell height or 1 year respectively. Two mortality peaks in the juvenile’s life at 4 and 10–15 mm shell height either represent important obstacles in the ontogenetic development of the species or reflect external influences. □ Biradiolites, grinding tomography, palaeobiology, population dynamics, reproduction, rudists, sclerochronology, seasonality.  相似文献

To improve knowledge of goosefish Lophius americanus' reproductive biology, females were collected during 2009–2012 from the Mid‐Atlantic Bight shelf region of the U.S. east coast. Batch fecundity increased with total length (LT), from 229 100 to 2 243 300 mature oocytes per female (LT range: 55·5–112 cm; n = 54). This estimate of fecundity at LT is lower than one derived from a sample collected during 1982–1985. Examination of whole oocyte diameters in different months indicated that L. americanus is a serial spawner, releasing more than one egg veil per spawning season, as suspected or observed for other Lophius species. Seasonality of spawning was evident from whole oocytes and gonad histology, and from larval fish surveys spanning the U.S. north‐east shelf, and confirmed a protracted (c. 6 months) spawning period. Peak spawning activity progressed northward from spring to autumn. The population‐level implications of these results were explored by estimating population reproductive potential (PRP), which considered the value of both current and future per capita reproduction using decade‐specific age structure and fecundity at length. PRP is now more than 50% lower compared with the historical period (1982–1985), a result of the lower proportions of large females and reduced fecundity across all sizes. Mechanisms that could explain this loss of stock productivity are fishing‐induced size–age truncation or regime shifts in egg production caused by changes in energy density of common forage species.  相似文献
