The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme is a seriesof bi-annual cruises between the Falkland Islands (50°S)and the UK (50°N). Measurements of the abundance of theN2-fixing, colonial cyanobacterium Trichodesmium along thistransect in the years 1995–1999 reveal that it is especiallyabundant between 0 and 15°N, but by contrast almost completelyabsent between 5 and 30°S. The cruise path between 0 and15°N lies close to 20°W, on the African (eastern) sideof the Atlantic. The maximum colony abundances we observed (  相似文献

Chlorophyll (Chl) a was measured every 10 m from 0 to 150 min the Transition Domain (TD), located between 37 and 45°N,and from 160°E to 160°W, in May and June (Leg 1) andin June and July (Leg 2), 1993–96. Total Chl a standingstocks integrated from 0 to 150 m were mostly within the rangeof 20 and 50 mg m–2. High standing stocks (>50 mg m–2)were generally observed westof 180°, with the exceptionof the sporadic high values at the easternmost station. Thetotal Chl a standing stock tended to be higher in the westernTD (160°E–172°30'E) than in the central (175°E–175°W)and eastern (170°W–160°W) TD on Leg 1, but thesame result was not observed on Leg 2. It was likely that largephytoplankton (2–10 and >10 µm fractions) contributedto the high total Chl a standing stock. We suggest that thehigh total Chl a standing stock on Leg 1, in late spring andearly summer, reflects the contribution of the spring bloomin the subarctic region of the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Thedistribution of total Chl a standing stock on Leg 2 was scarcelyaffected by the spring phytoplankton bloom, suggesting thattotal Chl a standing stock is basically nearly uniform in theTD in spring and summer. Moreover, year-to-year variation inthe total Chl a standing stock was observed in the western TDon Leg 1, suggesting that phytoplankton productivity and/orthe timing of the main period of the bloom exhibits interannualvariations.  相似文献

The seasonal variability of phytoplankton in the EquatorialAtlantic was analysed using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS)-derived chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration data from1998 to 2001, together with in situ Chl a and primary productiondata obtained during seven cruises carried out between 1995and 2000. Monthly averaged SeaWiFS Chl a distributions werein agreement with previous observations in the Equatorial Atlantic, showing marked differences between 10° W in the EasternTropical Atlantic (ETRA) and 25° W in the Western TropicalAtlantic (WTRA) provinces (Longhurst et al. 1995. J. PlanktonRes., 17, 1245–1271). The seasonal cycle of SeaWiFS-derivedChl a concentration calculated for 0–10° S, 0–20°W (ETRA) is consistent with in situ Chl a measurements, withvalues ranging from 0.16 mg m–3, from February to April,to 0.52 mg m–3 in August. Lower variability was observedin 10° N–10° S, 20–30° W (WTRA) whereminimum and maximum concentrations occurred in April (0.15 mgm–3) and in August (0.24 mg m–3), respectively.A significant empirical relationship between depth-integratedprimary production and in situ measured sea surface Chl a wasfound for ETRA, allowing us to estimate the seasonal cycle ofdepth-integrated primary production from SeaWiFS-derived Chla. As for Chl a, this model was verified in a small area ofthe Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (0–10° S, 0–20°W), although in this instance it was not completely able todescribe the magnitude and temporal variability of in situ primaryproduction measurements. The annual euphotic depth-integratedprimary production rate estimated for ETRA by our empiricalmodel was 1.4 Gt C year–1, which represents 16% of theopen ocean primary production estimated for the whole AtlanticOcean.  相似文献

Two limpet species occur intertidally on subantarctic SouthGeorgia, the patellid Nacella concinna and the siphonarlid Kerguelenellalateralis. N. concinna is confined to the lower shore closeto LWS; K. lateralis occurs in middle shore pools, so theirdistributions do not overlap. N. concinna has a much narrowerthermal niche (–12.9°C to +15.6°C) than K. lateralis(–17.8°C to +31.8°C). Environmental data are presentedto show that the upper lethal temperature of N. concinna islow enough to prevent the limpet living higher on the shore. Both limpet species are slow-moving, but K. lateralis showsincreasing speed with rising temperature, peaking at 15–20°C.In contrast, N. concinna moves actively down to –1.9°C(when sea water freezes), but there is a steady decrease inspeed of locomotion above +2°C. Locomotion ceases at 14°Cin N. concinna (c.f. 30°C in K. lateralis). Both speciesexhibit very low tenacities, but in N. concinna tenacity decreaseswith increasing shell length. In K. lateralis there is no effectof temperature on tenacity. Both species show a positive allometricrelationship between foot area and shell length. N. concinnafeeds upon microbial films and microepiflora, but K. lateraliseats colonial diatoms and Enteromorpha bulbosa. Observationson shell middens of the kelp gull Larus dominicanus showed thatthe gulls did not eat K. lateralis, though they ate great quantitiesof the less accessible N. concinna. Gulls ate N. concinna assmall as 11 mm shell length (within the size range of K. lateralis).Experiments on gulls demonstrated an unwillingness to eat K.lateralis, probably because the siphonariid extrudes a viscidwhite mucus when the foot is touched. The vertical and ontogenetic distribution, and diel verticalmigration (DVM), of Eucalanus inermis in relation to the strongvertical gradient in oxygen concentration associated with anintense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) were studied at a coastalarea off northern Chile (20–21° S). A close relationshipbetween the abundance of the whole copepod population and lowoxygen waters was found, with most developmental stages remainingnear the base of the oxycline (30–80 m) and within theupper zone of the OMZ (30–200 m). All stages performedDVM but not at all the stations, mainly between the 30–60and 60–200 m strata; a small fraction (<20%) appearedin the surface layer (0–30 m) mostly at night. This strategyof movement would result in a better utilization of food resourcessince the strong physical and chemical gradients at the baseof the oxycline and upper OMZ boundary might serve as a siteof particle accumulation. A secondary fluorescence peak was,in fact, found at all the stations, coinciding with minimaldissolved oxygen (DO, <1 mL O2 L–1) at the base ofthe oxycline or in the upper OMZ boundary. The relevance ofthe biogeochemical flux involved in this diel migration patternwas assessed by calculating the potential active input of carbonand nitrogen from the upper layers into deeper the OMZ.  相似文献

Chaetognaths were identified and counted in 23 samples collectedin the west Indian Ocean along a transect from the Gulf of Adento the Cape of Good Hope, in February–March 1967. Althoughthe hydrographic front located at 5°S does not seem to representa barrier for the distribution of the majority of the species, some of them are in a preferential area south or north of thefront. The principal component analysis indicates the locationswhere the more intense overlapping of species takes place. Itis important to mention the occurrence of S.pseudoserratodentatain the proximity of Madagascar Island.  相似文献

Quercus coccifera L. and Q. ilex L. leaves, collected in winter, when the plants were in full turgor, were treated with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) with a water potential of –48 and –65bar, at 15 °C and at 30 °C, for 2 days. The responseof each species differs with temperature as far as the plastidpigment, anthocyanin and soluble sugar content is concerned. Thus Q. ilex is affected more at 15 °C rather than at 30°C, while in Q. coccifera, apart from a small increase inanthocyanins, no significant change was observed at 15 °C.On the contrary, at 30 °C significant changes were observedin all studied parameters. Chloroplast pigments decreased generallyon the first day and their content either dropped further orincreased to reach the control values on the second day. Alltreatments resulted in an increase in anthocyanin content. Solublesugar content raised in Q. ilex at 15 °C and decreased inboth species at 30 °C. The oxygen consumption of the protobranch bivalve Nucula turgidawas measured in relation to size and to variation in temperatureand ambient oxygen tension. The slope of the line relating logsize and log oxygen uptake varied from 0.539 to 0.884 over therange 5°C to 40°C in summer – conditioned (S)animals but for winter – conditioned (W) animals the slopevaried from 0.561 to 0.762 over the range 5°C to 15°Conly; from 20°C to 35°C the values for the slope fellfrom 0.298 to 0.092. There was evidence of reverse acclimation, since the absolute rate of oxygen consumption was greater inS animals than in W over the temperature range studied. Thelethal limit for both groups appeared to be between 30°Cand 35°C. At all temperatures (5°C–25°C) N. turgida wasfound to be a near complete oxyconformer with b2 x 103 valuesranging from +0.0754 to –0.0234. The responses to temperature differ little from those of eulamellibranchbivalves, but the lack of ability to oxyregulate does demonstratea difference which may be linked to the different gill structure. Submersible dives provided an opportunity to observe the opossumshrimp. Mysis relicta, in Lake Superior (64°54'N, 67°09'W,depth = 280 m). Observations included probable mating, midwaterand benthic responses, and several swimming modes. While matingthe male and female were joined in a ventral to ventral positionby interlaced thoracic appendages. During the evening ascentor predawn descent mysids actively swam vertically upwards anddownwards using their thoracic appendages which beat metachronally. When escaping from the bottom, mysids thrust their abdomensdownwards and rapidly accelerate directly forwards. The midwaterresponse, significantly slower than the benthic response, wasa jerky laterally undulatory movement which propelled the animalat a 45° angle from the forward motion. In a cruising modeMysis swims with its periopods, parallel to the bottom, at approximatespeeds of 2–5 cm–1. A remotely operated vehiclewas employed to observe mysids at close range at the sediment–waterinterface at deep-water and nearshore stations in northern LakeMichigan (44°34'N, 87°7'W, depth = 100 m, Algoma, Wisconsinharbor, depth = 20 m) during May 23–25, 1987. At the 20m inshore station mysids occurred in significant numbers duringthe day in very bright light. Mysid swimming behavior on thebottom at deep-water stations significantly fashioned the sedimentlandscape, a potentially important form of superficial bioturbation.  相似文献

Temperate Gramineae show maximal net photosynthesis at 20–5°C, whereas tropical Gramineae have maxima between 30 and35 °C. Moreover, it has been suggested that different carboxylationreactions are involved in the two groups. The present studyof the temperature dependance of in vitro ribulose-1,5- diphosphate(RuDP), and phosphopyruvate (PEP) carboxylases indicates thatthe two enzymes have clearly marked differences in temperaturesensitivity. RuDP carboxylase, present in the temperate andtropical species studied, showed maximal activity around 20–5°C except in Zea. By contrast, PEP carboxylase activityin all species was maximal between 30 and 35 °C. The dataimply that activity and temperature sensitivity of the relevantcarboxylase enzymes may well be a significant limiting factorin leaf photosynthesis, even at light saturation.  相似文献

This is the first study on diatom spatial patterns in relationto major oceanographic features along a megascale transect inthe Southwestern Atlantic Ocean and provides a comparison withdiatom distribution in surface sediments. Absolute abundancesof diatoms, silicoflagellates and dinoflagellates (>10-µmfraction) were assessed in 80 bottle samples from 5 to 50 m,retrieved in November 1993 at 20 stations (30–61°S)along 53°W. Siliceous phytoplankton were scarce in the northernhalf of the transect and in the south of 57°S (100–150cells L–1), with a strong peak in the vicinity of thePolar Front (200 000 cells L–1), whereas dinoflagellateswere more abundant at the northern stations (up to 24 000 cellsL–1). In the south of 50°S phytoplanktonic cell densitieswere loosely (but significantly, r = 0.54, P < 0.01) associatedwith chlorophyll a, whereas in the north of this latitude, thisrelationship disappeared (r = 0.018, P > 0.1). In total,191 diatoms and 4 silicoflagellates were recorded. Changes indiatom assemblage compositions along the transect allowed identificationof five discrete areas: Subtropical (29°S), Northern Transitional(34–41°S), Southern Transitional (43–48°S),Subantarctic (49–54°S) and Antarctic (55–59°S),each characterized by a set of typical species. Diversity changedlittle with latitude, but numbers of species were higher inthe north of 40°S. Comparison of diatom assemblage makeupin the plankton and in the surface sediments shows very strongdisagreements, whereby cold water species are very significantlyover-represented in the sedimentary record, suggesting enhancedpreservation and strong subsurface equatorward advection ofthe cold water taxa.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase (NR) activity was measuredin vivo in differentcrop species at 25–60 °C. Highest NR activity wasobserved at 40 °C in pigeon pea, cowpea, sunflower, sesameand sorghum, 45 °C in maize and 50 °C in bajra. At higherincubation temperatures NR activity declined in all species. In mung bean the optimum incubation temperature varied withthe season. In the summer crop of mung beans, NR activity wasmaximum at 50 °C while in the rainy season crop 30 °Cwas the optimum incubation temperature. NR in sesame was relativelyheat-tolerant. The results indicate that 30 °C is not theoptimum incubation temperature for all crop species. Nitrate reductase, temperature, in vivo assay  相似文献

The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station. The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda, fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. Seasonal variations in diversity and biomass of tintinnids (Ciliophora:Tintinnida) were investigated at two fixed stations in the innerpart of the Bahía Blanca Estuary (38°42' S, 61°50'W) during an annual cycle. The variations were analysed in relationto surface temperature, salinity, transparency, solar radiationand chlorophyll a (Chl a)concentration. Biomass was calculatedin terms of biovolume and carbon units. Diversity was estimatedas the number of species and the Shannon Index (H', ln based).Density of tintinnids ranged from 100 to 7800 individuals L–1H' ranged from 0 to 1.81. The biomass varied from 0.3 to 127.78x 106 µm3 L–1 (0.02–39.4 µg C L–1).Density was significantly related to temperature, solar radiationand Secchi distance (P < 0.01); diversity was significantlyrelated to temperature (P < 0.01) and solar radiation (P< 0.05). Biomass was significantly related only to temperature(P < 0.01) in one of the stations. According to principalcomponents analysis (PCA) tintinnids exhibited a segregationof three groups: winter, spring–summer and autumn forthe most internal station and winter, spring and summer–autumnfor the most external station. H' values were lower than thoseobserved in other coastal systems found at about the same latitudein the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

A comparative study, employing the concepts of growth analysis, has been made of the varying responses in the early vegetativephase of Gossypium hirsutum, Helianthus annuus, Phaseolus vulgaris, and Zea mays to combinations of light intensity (1.08, 2.16,3.24, 4.32, and 5.4 x 104 lx—photoperiod 14 h) and constantdiurnal air temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C).Depending on the combination of treatments, the temperatureof the internal tissues departed from air temperature by 6.9to 1.4 °C: so only the internal temperatures are cited here. For each species there are complex interactions between theeffects of light and temperature on the net assimilation rate, the leaf-area ratio, and the relative growth-rates of plantweight and leaf area. The magnitude of the changes induced bythe two factors vary both with the growth component and thespecies. The temperature responses are maximal up to 20–5°C while at the highest temperatures they may be negative. The temperature coefficients for leaf-area ratio are consistentlyless than those of the other three components: here betweenspecies the coefficients over 10–20 °C vary by a factorof 9.6, 5.4, and 5.1 for the rates of gain in plant weight andleaf area and the net assimilation rate, while the orderingwithin each growth component is species dependent. Under conditions of optimal temperature the relative growth-rateand net assimilation rate progressively increase, accordingto the species, up to either 4.32 or 5.4x 104 lx. The leaf-arearatio is always largest at the lowest intensity. The level oflight at which the rate of gain in leaf area reaches a maximumranges from 2.16x 104 lx for Phaseolus to between 4.32 and 5.40x104 lx for Gossypium. The highest relative growth-rate and net assimilation rate ofHelianthus exceed those of Zea substantially. Indeed the maximalassimilation rate for Helianthus of 2.10 g dm–2 week–1is the highest ever recorded under field or controlled conditions.Possible reasons for this reversal of the photosynthetic potentialsof the two species observed by previous workers are discussed.  相似文献

The vertical distribution patterns of paralarvae from severalabundant cephalopod taxa were examined from depth-stratifiedtows in the northeast Pacific (44–56°N, 145–165°W)during three summer surveys in 1999–2001. A total of 309cephalopods representing 10 taxa in three families were collected.Gonatid squids composed 97% of the total catch, and the mostnumerous taxa were Berryteuthis anonychus (59% of the totalcatch), Gonatus spp. (21%) and Gonatopsis borealis (17%). B.anonychus and Gonatus spp. were both most abundant in the upper20 m; catches of both taxa varied significantly with depth andwere significantly higher above the thermocline than in andbelow the thermocline. Gonatopsis borealis was collected mostlybetween 20 and 50 m, and catches were significantly higher inthe thermocline than above and below the thermocline. Paralarvaeof the three major taxa showed no evidence of diel verticalmigration. Mantle lengths of Gonatus spp. and G. borealis eachvaried significantly with depth, and Gonatus spp. showed a strongpositive correlation between mantle length and depth.  相似文献

Hatching experiments were conducted on sediment samples collectedon seven cruises between March 2002 and February 2003, at fourstations near Helgoland (54°11'N, 7°53'E). Samples wereincubated for up to 12 months and examined weekly for calanoidcopepod nauplii. 12807 nauplii hatched in total. Of these 36.43%were stage N1 (pooled), 44.08% were Temora longicornis (stageN2 and older), and 17.96% were Centropages hamatus (stage N2and older). Some Acartia spp. and an unidentified species werefound, too. Hatching varied significantly between sampling dates. At three stations, counts of all nauplii peaked in samples takenin April, while at one station the maximum was recorded in thesample collected in October. The seasonal pattern of hatchingwas similar in T. longicornis and C. hamatus. In March, April,October and February numbers of all nauplii were initially low,but increased over the following 2–3 weeks. In June, Augustand December, however, average numbers were comparatively highat first, but declined thereafter. In three of the four samplesthat were incubated for 12 months nauplii hatched from the sedimentfor the entire experimental period. Temora longicornis and C.hamatus displayed clearly distinct patterns of hatching in theselong-term incubations.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial variability in the quality and quantityof settling phytoplankton material in relation to concurrentprimary production was studied using sediment traps at threecoastal stations from a semi-enclosed bay (Pojo Bay) throughthe outer archipelago to the open Gulf of Finland. The fluxof settling phytoplankton was high (9.3 g C m–2period–1)in Pojo Bay, especially in spring, and lower in the archipelago(8.1 g C m–2 period–1) and open-sea area (5.2 gC m"2 period"1), although the primary production followed theopposite pattern. A large influx of allochthonous material intoPojo Bay in spring brought allochthonous phytoplankton cellsinto the traps, but limited primary production. Diatoms werethe most abundant settled phytoplankton at all stations, butthe species composition varied between Pojo Bay (Aulacoseiraspp., Rhizosolenia minima) and the outer stations (Skeletonemacostatum, Chaetoceros spp.)At the outer stations, migratingdinoflagellates (Peridiniella catenate) comprised part of thesettling material in spring. The high settling flux of the cyanophyteAphanizomenon flos-aquae is discussed. The species compositionof the phytoplankton assemblage influenced the proportion ofthe total organic carbon sedimentation that consisted of phytoplanktoncarbon.  相似文献

The microstructure, morphology and ontogenetic development ofstatoliths and age and growth of 405 planktonic paralarvae and117 juveniles belonging to 10 species of gonatid squids (Cephalopoda,Oegopsida) were studied in the region of the continental slopein the western part of the Bering Sea (57°00'–61°30'N,163°00'E–179°20'W). The statolith microstructureof all species was characterized by the presence of a largedroplet-shaped nucleus and bipartite postnuclear zone dividedinto two by the first stress check, except for Berryteuthismagister which had only one stress check and an undivided postnuclearzone. In Gonatus spp., completion of development of the postnuclearzone coincided with full development of the central hook onthe tentacular club. Daily periodicity of statolith growth incrementswas validated by maintaining 13 paralarvae of the four mostabundant species in captivity. All species might be subdividedinto two groups based on statolith microstructure, i.e. specieswith a central position of the nucleus within the first statolithcheck (Gonatopsis spp., Egonatus tinro and B.magister) and specieswith the nucleus shifted to the inner side of the first statolithcheck (Gonatus spp.). Comparative analysis of statolith morphologyshowed that paralarval statoliths have species-specific charactersthat allowed the construction of keys to identify species ofgonatid paralarvae based on their statoliths. Analysis of paralarvalgrowth using statoliths revealed that these cold-water planktonicgonatid paralarvae have fast growth rates, attaining a mantlelength of 7–10 mm at 15–20 days and 20–25mm at 35–70 days.  相似文献
