Bacteria isolated from surface sea waters, brackish waters and from algal cultures were studied to attempt a nutritional clustering. A hierarchical method, using aggregation according to variance, was used to compute the data. Six nutritional groups had been separated by differences in genus composition and nutritional characteristics. Groups range from one with bacteria which are poorly versatile, i.e. attach few different substances, and which grow on sugars, amino-acids and organic acids without any selectivity, to one with bacteria which are versatile, and which attack numerous organic acids and amino-acids, but only a few sugars. Bacteria from different origins are not spread randomly in the different clusters. Strains isolated from algal cultures are mainly associated with the lowest versatility; those isolated from the undiluted sea water are associated with the highest versatility. Bacteria from diluted sea waters appear to be intermediate in regard to their capability of using organic substances as their sole source of carbon. It also appears that organic acids provide individually the most discriminating substrates, i.e. the most useful for separating individual groups, but amino-acids and organic acids, as a whole, are not easy to use in classification, because they are too heterogeneous. The influence of the biochemical composition of particles originating from surface waters of the Gironde estuary on egg production rates of Eurytemora affinis zooplanktonic population was studied. In the high turbidity zone, suspended particulate matter had a low nutritional quality because the easily available organic fraction represented less than 15% of the overall particulate organic matter. In waters located seaward of the high turbidity zone, a slight increase in nutritional quality was observed. As a result, the sum of easily extractable organic macromolecules represented 15 to 33% of the overall particulate organic matter. The present study suggests that the low egg-production rate of Eurytemora affinis, occurring in the high turbidity zone, results from combined effects of temperature and bad feeding conditions in the area. Low copepod production can be explained by little phytoplankton growth due to light limitation and, therefore, restricted food availability, as well as difficulties in food selection, non-living particle may being dominant.  相似文献

The veined squid, Loligo forbesii, is found throughout the northeast Atlantic, including the waters off the Iberian Peninsula, and is a socio-economically important cephalopod species, sustaining several small-scale commercial and local artisanal fisheries. This study uses Iberian and Azorean trawl survey and fishery landings data from 1990 to 1992 and employs additive modelling to examine the relationships amongst somatic growth, season and gonad growth, in an attempt to determine the relative importance of intrinsic (e.g. nutritional state and body size) and extrinsic (temperature and daylight) factors which contribute to maturation in L. forbesii. We compare the results with those from a comparative analysis of contemporaneous data on Loligo vulgaris from the Iberian coast, and with a re-analysis of previously published results for L. forbesii in Scottish waters. Reproductive organ weight in both sexes of L. forbesii from all ports shows seasonal patterns with a fall/winter peak in maturation, as is expected with the animals’ year-long life cycle. Two maturity peaks (spring and winter) were found for both Azores L. forbesii males and females, possibly evidence of two breeding cohorts, with males maturing approximately 1 month earlier than females in both seasons. For L. vulgaris, three annual peaks in reproductive weight were identified. With the exception of L. forbesii males from Scottish waters, in all study animals, the partial effect of mantle length and mantle weight on reproductive weight is positive up to large body sizes. The relationship between nutritional status and reproductive weight is also generally positive. Geographic variation in the relationships, as seen between Scottish males and samples from the other study areas, is hypothesised to be largely attributable to local differences in environmental conditions (productivity, food availability, temperature, upwelling), although differences between L. forbesii from the Azores, Scotland and mainland Europe may also relate to previously documented genetic differences.  相似文献

An incubation experiment was performed on Potamogeton crispus (P. crispus) using sediment collected from Lake Tangxunhu in the center of China, in order to determine the effects of plant growth on Fe, Si, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mg, P, and Ca concentrations in the sediments and overlying waters. After 3 months of incubation, Ca, Mg, and Si concentrations in the water column were significantly lower, and P and Cu concentrations were significantly higher than in unplanted controls. The effect of P. crispus growth on sediment pore waters and water-extractable elements varied. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Si, Fe, Cu, and Zn were significantly higher, and P was significantly lower, than in pore waters of the control. Water-extracted concentrations of Fe, Mg, and Si in the sediments were lower, and P was higher, than in the control. Presence of P. crispus generally enhanced concentration gradients of elements between pore waters and overlying waters but not for P. The growth of P. crispus was associated with an increase in water pH and formation of root plaques, resulting in complex effects on the sediment nutritional status. Handling editor: S. M. Tidal variability of water mass characteristics has been assessed in the upper 100 metres of the Saguenay, a subarctic fjord in Québec, Canada. Temperature and salinity show a maximum variability in the 5-15 m layer in which vertical oscillations of a very sharp pycnocline are observed. Phosphates, nitrates and chlorophyll a are highly variable above this pycnocline during a tidal cycle, but dissolved oxygen content is remarkably stable in the whole water column. It is concluded that fluctuations of many variables in the subsurface waters might be large enough to hinder high rates of primary production.  相似文献

There is increasing awareness that many terrestrial and aquatic organisms are not strictly heterotrophic or autotrophic but rather mixotrophic. Mixotrophy is an intermediate nutritional strategy, merging autotrophy and heterotrophy to acquire organic carbon and/or other elements, mainly N, P or Fe. We show that both terrestrial and aquatic mixotrophs fall into three categories, namely necrotrophic (where autotrophs prey on other organisms), biotrophic (where heterotrophs gain autotrophy by symbiosis) and absorbotrophic (where autotrophs take up environmental organic molecules). Here we discuss their physiological and ecological relevance since mixotrophy is found in virtually every ecosystem and occurs across the whole eukaryotic phylogeny, suggesting an evolutionary pressure towards mixotrophy. Ecosystem dynamics tend to separate light from non‐carbon nutrients (N and P resources): the biological pump and water stratification in aquatic ecosystems deplete non‐carbon nutrients from the photic zone, while terrestrial plant successions create a canopy layer with light but devoid of non‐carbon soil nutrients. In both aquatic and terrestrial environments organisms face a grand écart (dancer's splits, i.e., the need to reconcile two opposing needs) between optimal conditions for photosynthesis vs. gain of non‐carbon elements. We suggest that mixotrophy allows adaptation of organisms to such ubiquist environmental gradients, ultimately explaining why mixotrophic strategies are widespread.  相似文献

Ten cultures of phytoplankters, including four strains of Skeletonema costatum from different origins, were used to improve some aspects of the bioassay technology. Special attention was paid to the preliminary nutrient limitation of the inocula. When the cells are maintained in nutrient starvation, their carbon, nitrogen, carbohydrates, proteins and above all chlorophyll a contents decrease. The minimum appears after a range of 2–7 days, according to species. The survival of these limited cells and their capacity to give rise to active growing cultures when sub-cultured are different with species, but efficiency in the inocula they provide usually can occur only until the minimum content in cellular components appears. Starved cells and enriched cultures of Chaetoceros lauderi and Skeletonema costatum were used to inoculate several samples of sea water, in order to test the effect of the starvation on the experimental results. It appears that the starved cells increase the sensitivity of the method, but they are more susceptible to substances limiting their growth. In the opinion of the authors the best way would be to use both starved and enriched cells as inocula, but, when this is impossible, cautiously starved cells should be used with unpolluted sea waters.  相似文献

Prorocentrum minimum is a planktonic dinoflagellate known to produce red tides that can be harmful. To recognize localities and understand occurrences of Prorocentrum minimum blooms in Mexico, published data of plankton from 1942 to present, as well as unpublished data from the authors, were reviewed. Studies and reports covered marine and coastal waters of México during different periods. Presence of P. minimum were reported in the Pacific coast, Gulf of California, Gulf of México, and the Caribbean, but blooms have been only reported since 1990. Thirteen bloom events were recorded. Six occurred in shrimp ponds and seven near aquaculture regions or coastal areas where intensive agriculture is practiced. Most of the blooms can be associated with damage to the surrounding marine biota either in aquaculture ponds or open waters. Direct toxicity has not been fully evaluated, but data suggest that low oxygen may not easily explain all of the damage. Interestingly, for yet unknown reasons, cells belonging to the triangular morphotype have seldom been reported in México.  相似文献

It was investigated whether quorum sensing (QS) mediated by N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) was important for heterotrophic bacteria from the littoral zone of the oligotrophic Lake Constance for growth with organic particles. More than 900 colonies from lake water microcosms with artificial organic aggregates consisting of autoclaved unicellular algae embedded in agarose beads were screened for AHL-production. AHL-producing bacteria of the genus Aeromonas enriched in the microcosms but AHLs could not be detected in any microcosm. To test for a potential function of AHL-mediated QS, growth experiments with the wild type and an AHL-deficient mutant of Aeromonas hydrophila in lake water microcosms were performed. Growth of both strains did not differ in single cultures and showed no mutual influence in co-cultures. In co-cultures with a competitor bacterium belonging to the CytophagaFlavobacterium group, growth of both A. hydrophila strains was reduced while growth of the competitor bacterium was not affected. Exogenous AHL-addition did not influence growth of the Aeromonas strains in any microcosm experiment. These results showed that AHL-mediated QS was not required for A. hydrophila during colonization and degradation of organic particles in lake water microcosms, suggesting that cell–cell signalling of heterotrophic bacteria in oligotrophic waters relies on novel signal molecules.  相似文献

We used sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes from bacteria that are associated with the esophagus/pharynx, stomach and intestine of two marine sympatric invertebrates but with different feeding mechanisms, namely the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (grazer) and the ascidian Microcomus sp. (suspension feeder). Amplifiable DNA was retrieved from all sections except the pharynx of the ascidian. Based on the inferred phylogeny of the retrieved sequences, the sea urchin’s esophagus is mainly characterized mostly by bacteria belonging to α-, γ-Proteobacteria and Bacteriodetes, most probably originating from the surrounding environment. The stomach revealed phylotypes that belonged to γ- and δ-Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Fusobacteria. Since the majority of their closest relatives are anaerobic species and they could be putative symbionts of the P. lividus stomach, in which anaerobic conditions also prevail. Seven out of eight phylotypes found in the sea urchin’s intestine belonged to sulfate reducing δ-Proteobacteria, and one to γ-Proteobacteria, with possible nutritional activities, i.e. degradation of complex organic compounds which is beneficial for the animal. The bacterial phylotypes of the ascidian digestive tract belonged only to the phyla of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. The stomach phylotypes of the ascidian were related to pathogenic bacteria possibly originating from the water column, while the intestine seemed to harbour putative symbiotic bacteria that are involved in the degradation of nitrogenous and other organic compounds, thus assisting ascidian nutrition. Biological and habitat characterization of the non-indigenous invasive species Xenostrobus securis was undertaken in the Ria de Vigo. This study included genetic identification of mussel samples collected from introduced and endemic areas, and the assessment of mussel size, population abundance, geographic distribution, pathological condition, and sediment composition of substrata type. The mussel had a marked patchy distribution, being more abundant in brackish sites with fine sediments and high organic matter content. Pathological analysis revealed that X. securis does not play any role as vector for introducing allochthonous pathogens in the Ria de Vigo. Nevertheless, depending on its invasiveness potential, the mussel could be a key host favouring spreading and epizootic outbreaks of marteliosis which is known to be harmful for local bivalve populations. Phylogenetic analyses of the COI gene placed all the resulting sequences in a clade within the genus Xenostrobus and its phylogeny congruent with an Australian/Pacific origin. The COI tree suggests two historical introductions in European waters. One of these invasions seems to have started in Galicia, moving from there towards Italy and France, while the geographical spread of the second invasion cannot be deciphered, although the Australian/Pacific origin of this invasion seems very possible. The 18S network is congruent with one invasion starting in Galicia or in Italy, as the Australian haplotype is closely related to the haplotype found in these areas. Several hypotheses accounting for the colonization history of this species in Galician waters are discussed.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera were collected in the Rhône prodelta (Gulf of Lions, Mediterranean Sea), an enriched zone with high organic matter content. In June 2005, sediment cores were sampled at depths ranging from 20 to 100 m. Four distinct foraminiferal assemblages were determined in the study area, reflecting the geographical distribution of the impact of river supply. The living foraminiferal faunas present a typical picture, with strongly impoverished faunas composed exclusively of stress-tolerant taxa (Fursenkoina fusiformis, Bulimina aculeata, Leptohyalis scottii, and Adelosina longirostra) in the immediate vicinity of the river mouth. This assemblage is well adapted to a high input of continental organic matter and a minimum oxygen penetration depth into the sediment. To the southwest, under the main corridor followed by the river plume, high organic input with a dominantly terrestrial signature (more refractory) may be stressful for many taxa which need organic matter of a more labile quality. In this area, Nonion scaphum, Nonionella turgida and Rectuvigerina phlegeri are present in low densities. On the edge of this area, these taxa show much higher densities. A greater proportion of marine organic carbon could explain their increasing abundances in this area. Towards the east and towards the deepest stations, in the outer part of the enriched zone, biodiversity increases. Faunas at these stations have intermediate densities and contain a number of taxa (Cassidulina carinata, Epistominella vitrea, Valvulineria bradyana, Nonionella iridea/bradyi) at the deepest stations; Bolivina dilatata/spathulata and Textularia porrecta at the eastern stations) that seem to benefit from more marine organic matter. The comparison of geochemical measurements and foraminiferal data strongly suggests that the spatial distribution of foraminifera in the Rhône prodelta is mainly governed by the quality and the quantity of organic matter reaching the sediment–water interface. Since bottom waters are well oxygenated (215–260 µmol/L), and oxygen penetration into the sediment is less than 1 cm at all stations, benthic ecosystem oxygenation appears to have only a minor impact on regional differences in faunal distribution.  相似文献

We analysed quantity and quality of particulate organic matter during the austral summer 1994/1995 at a coastal station in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica). Our main aims were to investigate the origin and biochemical composition of particulate organic matter (POM), to measure its availability for consumers through the study of its digestible fraction (measured by using different enzymes separately) and to highlight the role of hydrolizable compounds in the organic matter diagenesis in the coastal waters at Terra Nova Bay. Temporal and spatial patterns of chlorophyll-a concentrations were reflected by the particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and total biopolymeric carbon concentrations, suggesting that most POM originated directly from phytoplankton. The most evident feature of POM in the coastal waters at Terra Nova Bay was the dominance of proteins (on average 57% of total biopolymeric particulate carbon), followed by carbohydrates (25%) and lipids (18%). We found that about 30% of the refractory particulate organic carbon (assumed to be present only after the complete exploitation of particulate organic nitrogen) did not originate from biopolymeric carbon (as sum of carbohydrate, protein and lipid carbon). This allows us to suggest the use of the digestible fraction of particulate biopolymeric carbon as a more accurate measure of the food availability of POM for consumers. In Terra Nova Bay coastal waters, most of the particulate protein pool was associated with large phytoplankton cells or phytodetritus. As a result, the protein pool appeared less available (i.e. less digestible) than the one present in oligotrophic waters where, conversely, most particulate organic nitrogen is sequestered into bacteria. The relative low availability of the protein pool, together with the rapid sinking of POM and the low remineralization rates of benthic heterotrophic microbes, are suggested as possible factors in determining the “inefficiency” in organic matter recycling of coastal waters at Terra Nova Bay, which behaves as a “loss type” system.  The spawning season, spawning grounds, and migration of the myctophid fish Diaphus theta were studied in the western North Pacific, based on seasonal sampling and estimation of hatching dates. The peak abundance of larvae was observed in July in the transition waters between the Oyashio and Kuroshio fronts. The spawning season ranged from late March to early September, with a peak from May to July. Larvae and juveniles <40 mm in standard length were distributed in the transition waters, whereas larger individuals were collected in the Oyashio and the Western Subarctic waters. These results indicate that this species undergoes a horizontal spawning migration from the Oyashio and Western Subarctic waters into the transition waters crossing the Oyashio front. Summary The trophic strategies were studied of Heteroxenia fuscescens living in shallow tropical waters. Structural and physiological adaptations show that particulate food is of less nutritional importance than the uptake of organic material dissolved in the sea, the utilization of assimilates of cytosymbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) and even the symbionts themselves. The external and internal surfaces of the tentacles are enlarged by featherlike pinnules, on the one hand facilitating the epidermal uptake of dissolved organic compounds and on the other offering wellilluminated spaces in which large numbers of zooxanthellae can be cultivated.Zooxanthellae expelled from gastrodermal cells may be taken up by the mesenteric filaments of the dorsal mesenteries, where they are often decomposed and utilized. The transport of photo-assimilates from the gastrodermis to the epidermis through the mesogloea takes place at a low rate. Most of the released assimilates of the symbionts appear in the coelenteron. One fraction of these assimilates is distributed within the gastric channel system and can be taken up by developing stages living there; another fraction reaches the epidermis extracorporally via the pharynx and the sea. Thus both the pharynx and the epidermis absorb these photo-assimilates. The epidermal uptake capacity serves two main purposes: (1) active uptake and incorporation of external organic material dissolved in the sea; (2) reabsorption of internal, self-produced organic material, i.e. reduction of the loss of endogenous compounds escaping from the gastric cavity necessarily due to the polyfunctionality of the coelenteron.  相似文献

The relative importance of the additions of iron (Fe), phosphorus (P) and the chelating agent EDTA in promoting the growth of Lyngbya majuscula in waters collected from the NW region of Moreton Bay was investigated using a series of continuous-flow growth studies. In addition, the possible impact of sewage/waste-water treatment plant (WWTP) discharges on the growth of L. majuscula was investigated in a series of batch and semi-continuous-flow growth studies. A preliminary study on the potential of phytoplankton growth in the receiving waters to affect the productivity of L. majuscula was also conducted. The results from the continuous-flow growth studies show that the growth rates of L. majuscula in the NW Moreton Bay waters were stimulated by the addition of EDTA alone but were not stimulated by the addition of P. The additions of P + EDTA, FeEDTA and P + FeEDTA did not result in higher growth rates than those obtained by the addition of EDTA alone. These results demonstrate that the productivity of L. majuscula in the NW Moreton Bay waters was not limited by P and that the addition of Fe did not affect the productivity. The stimulation effect of EDTA could be due to various reasons but we hypothesise that the principal reason for the stimulation is that EDTA increases the bioavailability of non-labile Fe species already present in the water. The results of the batch and semi-continuous-flow growth studies show that diluted (100:1) WWTP discharge water and the receiving waters impacted by WWTP discharges supported significant growth of L. majuscula and that the addition of EDTA to those waters increased the growth potential of L. majuscula. Also the growth of phytoplankton in a sample of the receiving waters impacted by WWTP discharges significantly reduced the growth rate of L. majuscula but the addition of EDTA restored the growth rate to near its maximum value. These results suggest that phytoplankton growth (and probably that of the associated bacterioplankton) could reduce the bioavailability of trace chemical factors needed for the growth of L. majuscula in Moreton Bay and in particular, could reduce the bioavailability of Fe. Overall the results support the hypothesis that growth of L. majuscula in Moreton Bay is often limited by the bioavailability of Fe and the principal reason for this is the lack of supply of suitable organic ligands/chelators, not the lack of Fe per se. ABSTRACT. Sphaerospores were found among three species of fish examined from waters known to be enzootic for proliferative kidney disease (PKD) of salmonids. They were detected in the renal tubules of both hatchery-reared rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) exposed to the infectious stage of PKD and in chubs (Gila bicolor) in the headwaters of a hatchery where PKD is enzootic. Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) collected near net pens where Pacific salmon had experienced a PKD epizootic were also found to harbor sphaerospores in the lumen of the kidney tubules. The latter two host species contained developmental stages of a myxosporidan in the blood and in the lumen of the kidney tubules which are similar to those of PKX, the causative agent of PKD in salmonid fish. The sphaerospores observed in the rainbow trout are the first to be observed in this species. The similarity to previously observed developmental stages, rarity, and presence of these sphaerospores in salmonid fish from a hatchery where PKD is enzootic suggest that they are the most mature stage of the PKX myxosporidan yet observed.  相似文献

The pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, originates from Eastern North America and was introduced to the Netherlands in 1902 as an aquarium and garden pond fish. At present the pumpkinseed is widely spread throughout the Netherlands and occurs in a variety of aquatic habitats. It is especially abundant in moorland pools, fishing ponds and urban waters. Strong population development of the pumpkinseed appears to be facilitated by nature management practices in existing ponds (the removal of accumulated organic matter and macrophytes) and by creating new ponds. These measures enhance suitable breeding habitats that are free of competitors and predators. Isolated waters harbouring pumpkinseed were more often situated close to human habitation and infrastructure than could be expected based on the distribution of randomly selected isolated waters, identifying introductions as an important dispersal mechanism. In order to minimize the chances of introductions, planning of nature management practices should be done at distances over 250 m from human habitation and 100 m from infrastructure. Macroinvertebrate abundance in pools populated by pumpkinseed was eighty three percent lower than in pools without pumpkinseed, probably due to opportunistic feeding and high pumpkinseed abundances. Currently there is little experience with pumpkinseed control. However, options to be explored include: decreasing depth of colonized waters by filling them with soil allowing them to occasionally dry up, introducing native competitors and predators and the use of biodegradable piscicides. In addition, limitation of the sale of pumpkinseed is required as well as public education on the consequences of introducing exotic species.  相似文献

Degradation of Amino Acids at a Simulated Water-sediment Interface of a Mediterranean Lagoon Environment, Golfe du Lion The degradation of two 14C and 3H labelled amino acids at the simulated water-sediment interface of a Mediterranean lagoon was studied. The four day experiments included the respiratory activity measurement and the study of incorporation processes of the radioactivity in specific organic fractions of the 14C arginine. After active mineralization occurred during the first day, the radioactivity in the acid-soluble fraction decreased and polycondensed products were progressively incorporated. The radioactivity of the 3H lysine was included mainly in the acid soluble fraction. The nature of the substrate, and the reducing conditions in the environment affect the radioactivity distribution in the organic fractions. The identification of amino acids in the acid-soluble and base soluble fractions shows that the labelled arginine and lysine and other amino acids in the acid soluble and base soluble fractions shows that the labelled arginine and lysine released from the initial compounds are important quantitatively.  相似文献
