Temporal and spatial occurrence of limnetic larval fish in Lake Banyoles in the spring and summer of 1993 and 1994 indicated that pumpkinseed spawned over 15 weeks (from mid-May to mid-August) and freshwater blenny over 14 weeks (from mid-May until early August). We noted that the spawning period of pumpkinseed commenced earlier in Lake Banyoles than in more northern lakes. Pumpkinseed and freshwater blenny larvae were collected by tow net in both the limnetic (at 4–4.5 m) and littoral zones (at 0–0.5 m), during daylight (no samples were taken during night). Freshwater blenny larvae were more abundant than pumpkinseed larvae. Both of them were more abundant in 1993 than in 1994 (pumpkinseed: 1.61 ind. 100 m−3 vs. 0.70 ind. 100 m−3; freshwater blenny: 3.95 ind. 100 m−3 vs. 1.90 ind. 100 m−3) and in both years they were uniformly distributed in the lake, without differences between the areas considered. The pumpkinseed larvae migrated at 3.5 mm TL into the limnetic zone, and returned to the vegetation of the littoral zone as juveniles. The freshwater blenny larvae were also planktonic (3.5–14 mm TL) but were distributed in both the littoral and limnetic zone before benthic settlement. The larval distribution is discussed on the basis of a trade-off between foraging and predation risk. Synopsis Growth and survival of white sucker and pumpkinseed larvae were examined in the laboratory in relation to prey density. Mortality of both species was greatest during the transition from endogenous to exogenous nutrition. Mortality prior to yolk absorption was substantial for white suckers and was not related to prey density whereas, pumpkinseed mortality during the same period was low. After yolk absorption, however, pumpkinseed suffered considerably higher mortality rates than white sucker larvae and, in both species, mortality and growth were directly related to prey density. The minimum prey density supporting 10% survival of pumpkinseed larvae was estimated at 0.16 plankters ml-1 whereas, for white suckers it was 0.15 plankters ml-1. Significant growth of both white sucker and pumpkinseed larvae, however, occurred only at prey densities higher than 0.25 plankters ml-1. We suggest that since egg size and yolk reserve are greater in sucker larvae, suckers are better adapted to survive short term declines in prey abundance during the transition to exogenous feeding than pumpkinseed larvae. The reproductive strategies of each species seems to reflect this, with suckers spawning over a short time interval, but producing young with large yolk. Pumpkinseed, in contrast, spawn intermittently over an extended period but produce young with relatively small volk reserves.  相似文献

Adult Dioctophyma renale occupied the enlarged renal pelvis of the right kidney of naturally infected mink. Lesions in the kidney parenchyma consisted of connective tissue proliferation in the interstitial tissue, tubular atrophy and fibrosis, and periglomerular fibrosis. The luminal surface of the renal pelvis wall was formed of numerous papillae covered with transitional epithelium. The nematodes in the lumen were bathed in an albuminous fluid containing red blood cells, epithelial cells and D. renale eggs. The left (uninfected) kidney was 60% larger than the left kidney of normal mink.  相似文献

The ferret, Mustela putorius furo, was found to be susceptible to Dirofilaria immitis infection when exposed to low (14) or high (280-420) numbers of infective larvae harvested from Aedes aegypti. Eight ferrets (half of them cortisonized) were inoculated subcutaneously with 14 larvae each. All of them were subsequently found to harbor D. immitis in the heart, and all but one of them had worms of both sexes. Six of these ferrets were examined for microfilaremia at 31 to 35 weeks after inoculation; 3 were positive (one observed only at postmortem examination) and there was evidence that fertilization of female worms had occurred in one other. Females up to 25.5 cm and males up to 16.0 cm were recovered. There was no evidence that the cortisonization of some ferrets had affected the infections. Both male and female ferrets became infected. Four cortisonized ferrets were inoculated with 280 or 420 larvae of D. immitis (divided equally between subcutaneous and intraperitoneal routes). All of them died 16 to 18 weeks after inoculation, yielding 102 to 125 immature D. immitis. In these lethal infections, worms were recovered from the heart and adjoining vessels, and also from vascular and extravascular sites throughout the body.  相似文献

Non-native freshwater fishes may become one of the dominant species in still and slow running waters and may impact whole ecosystem. One such species is the pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, which has become widely distributed throughout Western Europe occurring primarily lakes and reservoirs. Although the species is known to have existed at least for four decades and expanded its distribution range in Turkish waters widely, virtually there is no study on the factors behind the species' establishment success. We hypothesized high environmental tolerance as well as high population structuring result in more successful establishment of pumpkinseed in new environments. We sampled three reservoirs, one canal and one stream located longitudinally along western part of Turkey to test this hypothesis. Optima (uk) and tolerance (tk) levels of the species were calculated with weighted averaging values for several measured environmental factors. Invasiveness of pumpkinseed populations was determined with the model proposed earlier examining the relationship between juvenile growth and age at maturity. The phylogenetic network of mitochondrial haplotypes was constructed for Turkish populations and other populations of pumpkinseed from native (North America) and introduced range (Europe). Potential invasiveness of pumpkinseed populations in Turkey was categorized as invasive in one location (Sarıçay stream) and transitional in other locations. Environmental tolerance values were higher in southern populations. Likewise phylogenetic network showed that the Turkish populations have unique haplotypes, which were originated from native North American populations suggesting a high differentiation in haplotypes. Results clearly demonstrate the effect of environmental factors on genetic structure and the establishment success of pumpkinseed.  相似文献

Ferrets were inoculated with 160 third-stage larvae of the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi, followed 23 days later by 15 larvae of another filarial nematode, Dirofilaria immitis. Other ferrets received only one of these species. Microfilaremia developed in some ferrets with single infections of each species and in some ferrets with dual infections. The nature of the experiment did not permit a thorough study of microfilaremia, but B. pahangi microfilariae were found in numbers as high as 15,650/ml. At necropsy, approximately 8 months after inoculation, adult B. pahangi were recovered from the lymphatic vessels of all 8 ferrets inoculated only with that species, the recovery rate (based on 6 animals only) varying from 2 to 50% of the inoculum (mean 25%). Adult D. immitis were recovered from the heart of all three ferrets inoculated only with that species, the recovery rate being 7, 47, and 60% (mean 38%) of the inoculum. All 5 ferrets inoculated with both species yielded both adult B. pahangi (6 to 23%, mean 16% of inoculum) and adult D. immitis (13 to 67%, mean 37% of inoculum). It is concluded that the ferret is highly susceptible to both species and that concurrent infections with both species may readily be established.  相似文献

The diet composition of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, and pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, and its relation to environmental factors was studied in intermittent watercourses of the lower Guadiana basin (southern Iberia) during the particularly dry summer of 1994. Overall, both species took food items similar to those found in their North American and acclimatised ranges, with pumpkinseed consuming invertebrates (chiefly Chironomidae) and bass preying on invertebrates (chiefly Micronecta meridionalis) and fish (chiefly L. gibbosus and Gambusia holbrooki). Both bass and pumpkinseed were opportunistic feeders, feeding on the most frequent and abundant prey. However, Diptera larvae were apparently preferred by pumpkinseed and avoided by bass, while the contrary occurred with respect to Heteroptera. The two main fish prey of bass were eaten on the basis of random encounter. The relative abundance of macro-prey (i.e. fish and Atyephira desmarestii) were the principal environmental variables constraining bass dietary variation along the basin. On the contrary, pumpkinseed diet variation was mainly related to pumpkinseed size and the presence of piscivorous bass nearby, although habitat size and cyprinid abundance were also influential. In this study, we explored how environmental oxygen levels affect the metabolic phenotype of sympatric sunfish known to differ in their hypoxia tolerance. We examined bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), two species commonly found in the same water bodies, though pumpkinseed are considered more hypoxia tolerant, and survive in hypoxic lakes that exclude bluegill. Freshly caught Lake Opinicon pumpkinseed possessed significantly higher glycolytic enzyme activities (PGI, ALD, GAPDH, ENO, and LDH) than bluegill, but after holding the fish in an oxygenated environment for 7days, pumpkinseed glycolytic enzymes (PGI, ALD, and LDH) and mRNA (LDHA and HIF1α) declined to bluegill's levels. When glycolytic enzymes and mRNA were compared in pumpkinseed populations from seven lakes, only Penyck Lake pumpkinseed had significantly elevated glycolytic enzyme activity that did not diminish with normoxic holding. The levels of mRNA for LDHA and HIF1α did not differ between lakes and did not change in response to normoxic holding in the Penyck Lake fish. Collectively, these studies on sunfish show that hypoxia tolerance contributes to ecological niche specialization between species, and provides an example of a population that has adapted chronically elevated glycolytic enzyme activity independent of current dissolved oxygen in the water.  相似文献

The diets of 99 pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus from a pair of small, adjacent lakes in Ontario, Canada, were estimated from their stomach contents, trophically transmitted parasites and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in fish tissue. The three methods provided virtually unrelated information. There was no significant correlation in the importance of any prey item across all three methods. Fish with similar diets according to one method of estimating diet showed no tendency to be similar according to other methods. Although there was limited variation in fish size and the spatial scale of the study was small, both fish size and spatial origin showed comparatively strong associations with diet data obtained with all three methods. These results suggest that a multidisciplinary approach that accounts for fish size and spatial origins is necessary to accurately characterize diets of individual fish.  相似文献

A 9-month old, female, stray dog was rescued and conducted to a university veterinary hospital. Moderate anemia was observed and abdominal ultrasound revealed pancreatitis. Right kidney was not visualized due to intestinal gas. Urinalysis was normal. Castration was performed three weeks later. Before discharge, abdominal ultrasound was performed for internal sutures examination. A cyst-like structure was present in the right retroperitoneal space with what appeared to be tubular worms inside it, not observed in previous evaluation. An ectopic dioctophymosis diagnosis was made. Two female Dioctophyme renale were surgically removed from the structure. Right kidney was hyperemic but not removed. No sign of peritonitis was observed. The dog recovered well. Laboratory follow-up showed no abnormalities a year after the episode and Doppler ultrasound revealed a mild right nephropathy. This is the first canine ectopic dioctophymosis case with only an abdominal cyst-like structure containing viable nematodes, successfully treated. It represents the rarity and difficulties in diagnosing ectopic dioctophymosis even in enzootic locations, highlighting the importance of ultrasonographic screening for such silent, potentially zoonotic disease.  相似文献

The enemy release hypothesis states that invasive species are successful in their new environment because native species are not adapted to utilize the invasive. If true for predators, native predators should have lower feeding rates on the invasive species than a predator from the native range of the invasive species. We tested this hypothesis for zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) by comparing handling time and predation rate on zebra mussels in the laboratory by two North American species (pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus, and rusty crayfish, Orconectes rusticus) and one predator with a long evolutionary history with zebra mussels (round goby, Neogobius melanostomus). Handling time per mussel (7 mm shell length) ranged from 25 to >70 s for the three predator species. Feeding rates on attached zebra mussels were higher for round goby than the two native predators. Medium and large gobies consumed 50–67 zebra mussels attached to stones in 24 h, whereas pumpkinseed and rusty crayfish consumed <11. This supports the hypothesis that the rapid spread of zebra mussels in North America was facilitated by low predation rates from the existing native predators. At these predation rates and realistic goby abundance estimates, round goby could affect zebra mussel abundance in some lakes.  相似文献

Dioctophymosis is the disease caused by the nematode Dioctophyme renale, normally found parasitizing the right kidney of dogs. The absence of symptoms is frequent in parasitized animals. The surgical procedures are commonly performed to treat this disease. This work describes a case involving a canine with renal and ectopic parasitosis in the abdominal and thoracic regions. A mixed-breed female dog, approximately four months old, was diagnosed by ultrasound as for the presence of D. renale in the right kidney and abdominal and thoracic cavities. The animal underwent exploratory celiotomy, nephrectomy of the parasitized kidney, and transdiaphragmatic thoracotomy to remove the thoracic parasite, with a single abdominal surgical wound and excellent postoperative recovery. Several reports of ectopic parasitosis are found, however, the thoracic finding is unusual, and curative therapeutic transdiaphragmatic thoracotomy for dioctophymosis in dogs has not been previously described.  相似文献

Larval stages and adults of Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) pereirai Annereaux, 1946 are described from naturally infected Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Steindachner) (Sciaenidae) from the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The translucent first-stage larvae have a denticulate process at the anterior end, no buccal capsule or esophagus undifferentiated into anterior muscular and posterior glandular parts and an elongate tail; third-stage larvae have a tail with three terminal projections, a buccal capsule divided into an anterior portion with 12-20 ridges running to the left and a posterior smooth portion, and an esophagus with muscular and glandular regions. Fourth-stage larvae exhibit a buccal capsule lacking a distinct basal ring with ridges running to the right and a tail with two terminal processes, as in adults. New host records are reported and their role in its life-cycle are discussed.  相似文献

Microfilaremia, immune responses, and pathology were compared in ferrets infected with 100 third-stage larvae of Brugia malayi (subperiodic strain) or injected intravenously with 10(6) microfilariae. Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) inoculated with third-stage larvae typically became patent during the third month after infection, with a mean patency of 123 +/- 25 (SE) days. Ferrets injected intravenously with microfilariae exhibited a relatively constant microfilaremia for 3-4 weeks and usually cleared microfilariae before the fourth month. Ferrets that cleared microfilariae after intravenous injection of microfilariae or after infection with third-stage larvae failed to become patent or became amicrofilaremic within 3 weeks after a challenge intravenous injection of 10(6) microfilariae. Clearance of circulating microfilariae was associated with eosinophilia and serum antibody specific for the microfilarial sheath in ferrets injected with microfilariae and in most ferrets infected with third-stage larvae. Ferrets infected with third-stage larvae and necropsied after clearance of microfilariae had tissue inflammatory reactions to microfilariae characteristic of occult filariasis (tropical eosinophilia) in man; these ferrets exhibited immediate cutaneous hypersensitivity and circulating reaginic antibody to antigens of microfilariae. In ferrets necropsied following two intravenous injections of microfilariae, the majority of ferrets examined within 10 days after clearance of microfilariae had visible liver lesions to microfilariae identical to those of the ferrets infected with third-stage larvae; immediate cutaneous hypersensitivity and reaginic antibody were not consistently detected in ferrets injected with microfilariae. Sera from ferrets that had cleared circulating microfilariae were transferred passively into ferrets made microfilaremic by intravenous injection of microfilariae. Sera with microfilarial sheath-reactive IgG antibody titers (greater than or equal to 1:200) and microfilarial agglutination titers (greater than or equal to 1:40) rapidly cleared injected microfilariae (less than 24 hr); this serum also cleared or greatly reduced circulating microfilariae established by an infection with third-stage larvae; only the IgG-containing fraction of the sera was active in immune clearance. Sera that cleared microfilariae of B. malayi did not clear circulating microfilariae of Dirofilaria immitis or prevent recurrence of circulating microfilariae of B. malayi in ferrets infected with adult filariae.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Densities of Corixidae (Hemiptera), larval Odonata, and large larval Trichoptera were estimated in the littoral zone of small lakes in an acid-stressed area near Sudbury, Ontario. Fish were present in some lakes and absent in others, and fishless lakes occurred across a wide range of pH. Corixidae were significantly more abundant in lakes without fish than in lakes with fish, and their numbers were not related to the pH of fishless lakes. Anisoptera (Odonata) larvae tended to be more numerous in benthic samples from fishless lakes than from lakes with fish, and their exuviae were significantly more abundant around fishless lakes. In most lakes, the assemblage was dominated by three species; Leucorrhinia glacialis, Libellula julia, and Cordulia shurtleffi. In lakes containing white sucker, Catostomus commersoni, Gomphus spp. were most numerous. In the most acid fishless lakes, L. julia was uncommon, and L. glacialis was extremely abundant. In fishless lakes, numbers of Anisoptera larvae and exuviae were negatively correlated with pH, though species richness was positively correlated with pH. Exuviae of Zygoptera (Odonata) were more abundant around fishless lakes, irrespective of pH. Larvae of Limnephilus (Trichoptera) were most abundant in non-acid fishless lakes, and absent at pH<5.2. Abundances of Banksiola (Trichoptera) were negatively correlated with the pH of fishless lakes.  相似文献

The structure of the oncomiracidia of gill parasites Diclidophora merlangi, D. luscae and D. denticulata is described. The three larvae differ in body length and in the size and arrangement of the hooks but the glandular components and excretory systems are similar. There is some evidence that glandular secretions aid hatching. In newly hatched larvae of D. merlangi marginal hook III is displaced and a pouch of tissue occurs between hooks II and IV. The pouches are presumptive clamp tissue. Many larvae fail to hatch in vitro but form one pair of clamps while within the egg capsule.  相似文献

目的建立甲型H5N1流感病毒感染雪貂动物模型[1-3]。方法 H5N1流感病毒株A/Vietnam/1203/2004病毒以103和104 TCID50滴度分别感染雪貂。对4~10月龄去势雪貂经兽用氯胺酮轻度麻醉后进行滴鼻感染,每个稀释度接种3只雪貂,感染后第5天安乐处死。感染后每天记录雪貂一般临床变化。感染前0 d采集鼻甲骨活检,感染后1~5 d鼻甲骨活检检测病毒载量和病毒滴度。处死时取雪貂气管、肺、心、肝、脾、肾、小肠、脑组织作病毒滴度检测和病理检查。结果 H5N1103和104 TCID50的病毒分别感染雪貂,雪貂死亡都率在33%。103TCID50和104 TCID50病毒分别感染雪貂,动物都出现持续3 d体温升高,104 TCID50组出现超过20%的体重下降。上呼吸道排毒呈现上升趋势,并可在除呼吸系统以外的组织器官中分离到病毒。感染的雪貂病理表现为重度肺炎。结论雪貂感染H5N1病毒株后在临床表现、病毒学、分子生物学、病理学方面的检测都可以证实雪貂感染H5N1病毒动物模型已建立,104 TCID50病毒滴度是一个建立感染动物模型比较合适的剂量。  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of available food resources on growth and patterns of reproduction was studied in two populations of pumpkinseed sunfish in adjacent lakes in southeastern Ontario. Ideally, mature individuals should be long-lived, attain a large size, and maintain a high reproductive effort. However, rarely are environmental conditions ideal and compromises are necessary. In the present study, there were smaller quantities of preferred prey items (gastropods), and total benthos available in one lake. Pumpkinseed in this population ate less in general, and were smaller in body size in the older age classes. These fish matured at a younger age and a smaller size than individuals in the other lake studied, and in populations in this geographic area reported in the literature. In addition, the relationships of both fecundity and ovary weight to total weight were different between lakes. Mean ovary weight, ripe egg size and lifetime fecundity were less in the population of small-bodies fish. Variation in patterns of reproduction between populations suggests that fish may be able to fine-tune responses to local environmental conditions.  相似文献

Dioctophyma renale is a parasite that frequently occurs in animals but rarely in humans. The present report describes the clinical observations of a D. renale infection in a 51-yr-old woman. Its clinical signs and diagnostic findings were unspecific until giant worms were observed in the urine and histological findings confirmed it was a D. renale infection. She refused treatment and died of bilateral renal function failure. This is the first confirmed report to follow the natural progression of D. renale infection in a human. Here, we discuss a conservative therapeutic approach and features associated with this parasitic infection.  相似文献
