The relationships between some leaf characteristics, tree size and species distribution were investigated for evergreen tree species along a slope in a warm temperate forest in Japan. Tree species were classified into three groups based on their dominance on the slope: ridge species that were aggregated in an uppersite, valley species that were aggregated in a lowersite, and uniform species that were distributed almost uniformly. The ridge species had a more positive leaf carbon isotope ratio than the valley species, which suggests that the ridge species have larger water use efficiency than the valley species. This may give some advantage to the ridge species over the valley species in the uppersite where water availability would be limited. However, the ridge species had smaller leaf nitrogen content on a mass basis and larger leaf mass per area than the valley species, which suggests that the ridge species had a smaller mass-based leaf photosynthetic capacity than the valley species. This may be disadvantageous to ridge species in the lowersite, because smaller leaf photosynthetic capacities cause lower leaf carbon gain and thus lower growth than the valley species. These differences in leaf characteristics between the ridge and the valley species were affected by microenvironments, and were also partly affected by the difference in species specific responses to microenvironments on the slope.  相似文献

Most theories of plant species coexistence assume the presence of diversity maintenance mechanisms, i.e. mechanisms enhancing species richness in a community. We wished to determine whether such a mechanism was operating by establishing a field experiment in the species-rich wooded meadow of Laelatu, western Estonia. Ten to seventeen subordinate species were removed periodically (for 4 years) from 10 permanent plots of 1×1 m (each plot had its specific list of excluded species; 10 plots served as control). Since the removed species were all subordinate ones, very little biomass was removed, but at the same time richness was reduced by 25–33%. If some diversity maintenance mechanism was operating, we would expect that immigration of other subordinate species would restore the original species richness. It was not possible to reject the null hypothesis of an identical immigration rate of new species into manipulated and control plots. The rate of small-scale species turnover was not affected by the removal of subordinate species. Interrelations of five richness characteristics were studied, by comparing empirical correlations among them, with those expected from a null model of random migration of species. The immigration rate of new species appeared to be related to the number of constant species, and immigration/extinction balance related to initial richness, more strongly than predicted by the null model. In the manipulated series these relationships matched the expectation from the null model. While the results generally support the so-called species pool hypothesis (and the carousel model), it seems that species small-scale turnover depends on the richness pattern in the studied grassland. In the case of plots with artificially reduced richness no departures can be detected from the random migration hypothesis.  相似文献

Adhesion of bacteria from mixed cell suspension to solid surfaces   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The attachment of four species of bacteria to solid surfaces was investigated to determine whether the attachment of one species of bacterium could be influenced by the presence of other attaching or attached species. Three types of experiment were done: (i) attachment of bacteria from suspensions containing two species (termed simultaneous attachment) was compared to attachment of each species in pure culture, (ii) the attachment of one species of bacterium to surfaces already colonized by a second species (termed sequential attachment) was compared to attachment of the bacteria to clean, uncolonized surfaces, and (iii) bacteria were allowed to attach to a surface already colonized by a second strain, and their effect on the stabilization of adhesion of the initial colonizing strain was determined. The bacteria were Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, a Staphylococcus sp., a coryneform (isolates from a canning factory), and Staphylococcus aureus. The surfaces were tin plate, glass, and nylon. The attachment of each species was either increased, decreased or not affected by the simultaneous or sequential attachment of another species. The results depended upon the species combination, the surface composition, and the sequence of attachment. The detachment of a primary colonizing species was either increased, decreased or not affected by the subsequent attachment of a second species, depending on the species combination and surface. The results demonstrate that bacterial attachment to a surface can be influenced by the composition of the attaching population and can differ considerably from the attachment of the component species in pure culture. This article uses an ecological-economic approach to study optimal investment in multi-species protection when species interact in an ecosystem. The analysis is based on a model of stochastic species extinction in which survival probabilities are interdependent. Individual species protection plans can increase a species survival probability within certain limits and contingent upon the existence or absence of other species. Protection plans are costly and the conservation budget is fixed. It is assumed that human well-being depends solely on the services provided by one particular species, but other species contribute to overall ecosystem functioning and thus influence the first species survival probability. One result is that it may be optimal to invest in the protection of those species that do not directly contribute to human well-being, even if biological conservation decisions are exclusively derived from such a utilitarian framework. Another result is that the rank ordering of spending priorities among different species protection plans, as obtained under the assumption of independent species, may be completely reversed by taking species interaction into account. The conclusion is that effective species protection should go beyond targeting individual species, and consider species relations within whole ecosystems as well as overall ecosystem functioning. Ecosystem health is identified as a necessary prerequisite for successful species protection in situ.  相似文献

This study presents results of a three and a half year experiment in a calcareous grassland on the Baltic island of Öland, south-eastern Sweden. Environmental conditions, viz. nutrient regime, water availability, light conditions and grazing pressure were changed in a randomised experimental design with ten different combinations of these factors, including a control. Weather conditions during the study period fluctuated considerably. Only the combination of reduced light and increased soil nutrient availability decreased species richness significantly, presumably by inducing asymmetric competition for light by competitively strong species. Physical space also became less available for weaker competitors. In cases where only nutrients or only water were supplied in sufficient amounts, competitive exclusion was inhibited by either low nutrient or low water availability. Under conditions which combined high levels of nutrient and water supply with regular disturbance (i.e. simulated grazing) high species richness was maintained. Although there was a significant negative correlation between species richness and amount of above-ground biomass, the number of species was not significantly reduced in the treatment which combined fertilisation and irrigation. One reason for this may be that the heterogeneous light regime in this treatment still allowed species persistence and coexistence.  相似文献

The cladistic species concept proposed by Ridley (1989) rests on an undefined notion of speciation and its meaning is thus indeterminate. If the cladistic concept is made determinate through the definition of speciation, then it reduces to a form of whatever species concept is implicit in the definition of speciation and fails to be a truly alternative species concept. The cladistic formalism advocated by Ridley is designed to ensure that species are monophyletic, that they are objectively real entities, and that they are individuals. It is argued that species need not be monophyletic in order to be real entities, and that ancestor-descendant relations are not the only relations that confer individuality on entities. The species problem is recast in terms of a futile quest for a definition of that single kind of entity to which the term species should uniquely apply.  相似文献

The possession of genital spines has been considered as a key taxonomic trait to differentiate Corynosoma from other genera of the Polymorphidae. However, Corynosoma currently consists of 2 groups of species with clear ecological and morphological divergences: the "marine" group (with ca. 30 species) infects mammals and piscivorous birds in the marine realm, whereas the "freshwater" group (with ca. 7 species) infects waterfowl in continental waters. Species from these groups differ in shape of body and neck, trunk spination, lemnisci length and shape, testes arrangement, and number and shape of cement glands. We tested whether species from these 2 groups formed a monophyletic assemblage based on a phylogenetic analysis by using 15 morphological characters. We also included species of Andracantha, Polymorphus, and Hexaglandula with which potential taxonomic conflicts could most likely arise. We obtained 108 equally most parsimonious trees of 32 steps, with a consistency index (CI) = 0.59, and a retention index (RI) = 0.82. The strict consensus tree indicated that the "freshwater" species of Corynosoma form a monophyletic assemblage closely related to some species of Polymorphus, whereas the "marine" species of Corynosoma are grouped together with Andracantha. Accordingly, Corynosoma is not a monophyletic assemblage, and Pseudocorynosoma n. gen. is proposed for the "freshwater" species of Corynosoma. This decision was strongly supported by (1) a functional comparison of foretrunk muscles between species of Polymophus, Andracantha, and Corynosoma; (2) a multivariate morphometric study of proboscis characters and egg size; and (3) an analysis of ecological patterns of host-parasite relationships.  相似文献

We introduce a measure of Environmental Consistency (ECo), which assesses the probability of reducing homogeneity in the environmental factors within a species’ distribution by randomly displacing its occurrences. ECo is computed by applying null model analysis to a species incidence matrix where each locality is associated with a set of environmental values. Environmental homogeneity is measured, for each species, as the average multiparametric distance between any pair of localities where the species occurs. ECo can account for the effect of species interactions and resource availability by using different null models that permit or forbid occurrence displacements altering species local abundance or species prevalence. ECo provides researchers with a flexible statistical framework to address a wide range of ecological and biogeographical issues. We investigated in depth the properties and the potentialities of ECo, showing how it integrates the concepts of Eltonian and Grinnelian niches. We demonstrate that a close relationship exists between niche breadth at species level and environmental consistency of species assemblages. In addition, we provide evidence that ecological consistency is closely related to species range. The classical "new systematics" with its replacement of the monotypic by the polytypic species, and of the morphological by the biological species concept, is now so universally accepted in ornithology that it can hardly be considered any longer as "new". Present trends indicate two areas of avian systematics favourable for active expansion, population systematics and phylogenetic systematics. Instead of describing the population structure of species in terms of subspecies, the trend will be to describe it in terms of "geographical isolates", "population continuats", and "zones of secondary intergradation" of former geographic isolates. Such an analysis can shed much light on the ecological requirements of species and on their former history. The other area of new avian systematics is a re-activated study of the higher categories of birds, with new methods and interpreted by a re-evaluated set of phylogenetic and evolutionary concepts.  相似文献

The biological species concept deals both with the meaning of the sexual species as a harmonious gene pool and with its protection against deleterious outbreeding (effected by isolating mechanisms). According to the Darwin-Muller-Mayr theory isolating mechanisms are acquired by incipient species during alloparty. Isolating mechanisms are not the result of ad hoc selection, but of a change of function of properties acquired during the preceding isolation of the incipient species. The role of behavioral properties (recognition) among the isolating mechanisms has long been recognized and described by naturalists but was rejected as basis of a species definition for a number of valid reasons.  相似文献

Experiments designed to reveal variation among individual parasites in preference for different host species may generate misleading results. Apparent variation in the order of preference among host species can be generated solely from variation in the strength of discriminations made within host species. We illustrate this with a study of oviposition preference in the butterfly Melitaea cinxia. All butterflies were tested on the same six individual plants, three Plantago lanceolata (P) and three Veronica spicata (V). Some insects repeatedly preferred all individual P over all individual V or vice versa. We designated these as "pure" species ranks. Other insects repeatedly produced "mixed" ranks, preferring some individual V over some P, and some individual P over some V. We show how a "mixed" rank butterfly could differ from a "pure" rank insect by discriminating either more within plant species and/or less between them. Therefore, discrimination within host species can mask or confound discrimination among species. We discuss implications for the design of preference experiments.  相似文献

Although most researchers use the terms "guild" and "functional group" more or less synonymously, these two concepts bear different meanings. The guild concept refers primarily to the mechanisms of resource sharing by species in a competitive context whereas the functional groups concept is concerned with how a resource or any other ecological component is processed by different species to provide a specific ecosystem service or function. In many cases but not necessarily all, the two concepts are the two "faces" or "sides" of the same coin: the sharing by species of a similar resource is the guild facet (structural), while the ecosystem processes these species eventually perform through resource exploitation is the functional group facet. The two concepts differ in that competitive relationships within groups of species are not the focus of the functional group approach, exactly as processes or functions are not the focus of the guild approach. A group of species can be considered either as a guild or a functional group depending on the question addressed. Guild and functional group membership is independent of phylogenetic relationships but because species tend to share similar life history traits and adaptations through common evolutionary history, guild and functional group associates are often closely related. The concept of guild has had broader application in animal studies than in plant studies, whereas the reverse is true for the concept of functional group. Recent methodological advances to objectively partition species into guilds and functional groups, taking into consideration the most relevant characters or traits for delineating them, provide the means to construct an operational framework for making in situ and ex situ experiments that are urgently needed for a better understanding of the role of species in ecosystem functioning, especially in relation to global change concerns.  相似文献

Community indices were evaluated at different frequency of transect counts of butterflies by randomization. Randomized samples were obtained by re-arranging 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 counts from 18 counts at a study site (Hiraoka), and 1, 2, 3, 5 and 15 from 15 at another site (Narukawa), in 1994. Morisita's new estimate of species richness, QM gave a good estimate when the number of counts was five or more. QM estimated from the sum of both assemblages (58 species) was 70.7, while 73 species were recorded at least once from 1990 to 1994. The Octave method always resulted in an underestimation. Diversity indices, Shannon's H, Simpson's D and , Hurlbert's E(Sn), Itow's b, and Morisita's H gave good estimates when the number of counts was five or more. Temporariness of univoltine species in flight period made a bias in the estimates. We concluded that the count is needed at least six times (once a month) and the estimates were improved by separating the multivoltine species from the univoltine species. Intensive counting during the flight period of the univoltine species was recommended.  相似文献

Resource-based competition between microorganisms species in continuous culture has been studied extensively both experimentally and theoretically, mostly for bacteria through Monod and Contois “constant yield” models, or for phytoplankton through the Droop “variable yield” models. For homogeneous populations of N bacterial species (Monod) or N phytoplanktonic species (Droop), with one limiting substrate and under constant controls, the theoretical studies indicated that competitive exclusion occurs: only one species wins the competition and displaces all the others (Armstrong and McGehee in Am Nat 115:151, 1980; Hsu and Hsu in SIAM J Appl Math 68:1600–1617, 2008). The winning species expected from theory is the one with the lowest “substrate subsistence concentration” \(s^{\star }\), such that its corresponding equilibrium growth rate is equal to the dilution rate \(D\). This theoretical result was validated experimentally with phytoplankton (Tilman and Sterner in Oecologia 61(2):197–200, 1984) and bacteria (Hansen and Hubell in Science 207(4438):1491–1493, 1980), and observed in a lake with microalgae (Tilman in Ecology 58(22):338–348, 1977). On the contrary for aggregating bacterial species described by a Contois model, theory predicts coexistence between several species (Grognard et al. in Discrete Contin Dyn Syst Ser B 8(1):73–93, 2007). In this paper we present a generalization of these results by studying a competition between three different types of microorganisms: planktonic (or free) bacteria (represented by a generalized Monod model), aggregating bacteria (represented by a Contois model) and free phytoplankton (represented by a Droop model). We prove that the outcome of the competition is a coexistence between several aggregating bacterial species with a free species of bacteria or phytoplankton, all the other free species being washed out. This demonstration is based mainly on the study of the substrate concentration’s evolution caused by competition; it converges towards the lowest subsistence concentration \(s^{\star }\), leading to three different types of competition outcomes: (1) the best free bacteria or phytoplankton competitor excludes all other species; (2) only some aggregating bacterial species coexist in the chemostat; (3) A coexistence between the single best free species, with one or several aggregating species.  相似文献

Phelipanche ramosa is a major root-holoparasitic damaging weed characterized by a broad host range, including numerous Fabaceae species. In France, the agricultural threat posed by P. ramosa has increased over two decades due to the appearance of a genetically differentiated pathovar presenting a clear host specificity for oilseed rape. The new pathovar has led to a massive expansion of P. ramosa in oilseed rape fields. The germination rate of P. ramosa seeds is currently known to vary among P. ramosa pathovars and host species. However, only a few studies have investigated whether phylogenetic relatedness among potential host species is a predictor of the ability of these species to induce the seed germination of parasitic weeds by testing for phylogenetic signal. We focused on a set of 12 Fabaceae species and we assessed the rate of induction of seed germination by these species for two pathovars based on in vitro co-cultivation experiments. All Fabaceae species tested induced the germination of P. ramosa seeds. The germination rate of P. ramosa seeds varied between Fabaceae species and tribes studied, while pathovars appeared non-influential. Considering oilseed rape as a reference species, we also highlighted a significant phylogenetic signal. Phylogenetically related species therefore showed more similar rates of induction of seed germination than species drawn at random from a phylogenetic tree. In in vitro conditions, only Lotus corniculatus induced a significantly higher germination rate than oilseed rape, and could potentially be used as a catch crop after confirmation of these results under field conditions.  相似文献

Export of species from sources (epicenters) of differing ages and complexities was examined using laboratory microcosms. Polyurethane foam (PF) artificial substrates were colonized by protozoans for different time periods in a small pond. Substrates were returned to the laboratory and used as epicenters for protozoan colonization of barren PF islands in initially sterile microcosms. Islands were exposed to epicenters for either 24 h or continuously for 28 d. Islands from pairs of microcosms exposed to epicenters of identical ages were sampled on 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 46 d after initial epicenter exposure. Colonization parameters were estimated by fitting numbers of colonizing species to the MacArthur-Wilson equilibrium model. Islands exposed continuously to epicenters were colonized by significantly more species than those exposed for only 24 h. Islands exposed to immature, species poor epicenters were colonized by a greater proportion of the source community than those exposed to more mature, species rich epicenters. All islands were depauperate compared to epicenters except those exposed to the most immature (1 d old) epicenter. Colonization continued at a reduced rate in spite of the absence of the epicenter. Results from communities with rapid species turnover and rapidly reproducing species suggest that the continuous presence of a species source is less important for colonization of a new habitat. Dispersal of potential colonists occurs rapidly in these communities. Less mature communities dominated by pioneer forms are more effective at producing colonists than more mature communities.  相似文献

通过野外实地调查,对广州市萝岗区风水林的植物组成及群落结构进行了分析.结果表明:萝岗区单个风水林面积为40 ~600 hm2,共有维管植物112科255属387种;其中,蕨类植物15科21属35种,裸子植物1科1属2种,被子植物96科233属350种;草本和乔木种类较多,分别有122和111种;灌木和藤本种类较少,分别有84和70种;其中,包含国家级珍稀保护植物5种和一些需要关注的种类,以及林下凤尾蕨(Pteris grevilleana Wall.ex Agardh)和虎克鳞盖蕨[Microlepia hookeriana (Wall.) Presl]2种广州市新记录种.优势科较明显,包含茜草科(Rubiaceae)、菊科(Compositae)、大戟科(Euphorbiaceae)、禾本科(Poaceae)、蝶形花科(Papilionaceae)、樟科( Lauraceae)等;虽然寡属科和寡种科所占比例较大,但包含种数较少;寡种属所占比例较大,占总属数的90.59%.植被类型属于南亚热带季风常绿阔叶林,以南亚热带常绿树种为主,可分为乔木层、灌木层和草本层,层间有丰富的藤本植物;作为群落的主体结构,木本植物较草本植物有优势.群落优势建群种主要为樟科、大戟科、壳斗科(Fagaceae)、山茶科(Theaceae)、胡桃科(Juglandaceae)和苏木科(Caesalpiniaceae)等科的种类,依据优势种不同可划分为13个群系.根据调查结果,对广州市萝岗区风水林的保护和资源利用提出了建议.  相似文献

The species concept is applicable in virology because viruses have genomes, replicate, evolve, and occupy particular ecological niches. The following definition of virus species was accepted in 1991 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses: A virus species is a polythetic class of viruses that constitutes a replicating lineage and occupies a particular ecological niche. This definition does not provide a list of diagnostic properties for recognizing members of particular virus species. Furthermore, since a virus species is a polythetic class, it is impossible to use a single property such as a certain level of genome homology as defining property of the species. The implications of this new definition of virus species for future virus classification are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Acoustic mate-attracting signals of related sympatric, synchronic species are always distinguishable, but those of related allopatric species sometimes are not, thus suggesting that such signals may evolve to "reinforce" premating species isolation when similar species become sympatric. This hypothesis predicts divergences restricted to regions of sympatry in partially overlapping species, but such "reproductive character displacement" has rarely been confirmed. We report such a case in the acoustic signals of a previously unrecognized 13-year periodical cicada species, Magicicada neotredecim , described here as a new species (see Appendix). Where M. neotredecim overlaps M. tredecim in the central United States, the dominant male call pitch (frequency) of M. neotredecim increases from approximately 1.4 kHz to 1.7 kHz, whereas that of M. tredecim remains comparatively stable. The average preferences of female M. neotredecim for call pitch show a similar geographic pattern, changing with the call pitch of conspecific males. Magicicada neotredecim differs from 13-year M. tredecim in abdomen coloration, mitochondrial DNA, and call pitch, but is not consistently distinguishable from 17-year M. septendecim ; thus, like other Magicicada species, M. neotredecim appears most closely related to a geographically adjacent counterpart with the alternative life cycle. Speciation in Magicicada may be facilitated by life-cycle changes that create temporal isolation, and reinforcement could play a role by fostering divergence in premating signals prior to speciation. We present two theories of Magicicada speciation by life-cycle evolution: "nurse-brood facilitation" and "life-cycle canalization."  相似文献

The Ternstroemiaceae is a family of vascular plants with many taxonomic problems, basically in the delimitation of some of its species. Little is known about its world distribution and about the real state of conservation of its species. An analysis of the distribution patterns of the Mexican species was undertaken to provide information about the present status of species and possible conservation areas. Also, an analysis of the species richness, endemism centres, extension and location of the areas occupied by these species with a 1:50000 chart index was made. Finally, we propose some of the species of this family to be included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and in the next Mexican Norma Oficial Mexicana 059.  相似文献
