Low pungency is one of the most important agronomic traits in bunching onion (Allium fistulosum L.). Although the degree of pungency can be evaluated indirectly using a colorimetric test for pyruvic acid, DNA markers linked to low-pungency quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are still desired. In this study, we evaluated pungency in the bunching onion pseudostem through six trials conducted over 3?years using an F 2:3 population. QTL analysis based on the genetic linkage map revealed that the major pungency QTL was located within a 24.2-cM interval on Chr. 2a. The low-pungency parent-derived allele at AFAT04B03, a simple sequence repeat locus linked to the pungency QTL, was rare among commercial bunching onion cultivars. In addition, individuals homozygous for the low-pungency parent-derived allele at AFAT04B03 were significantly less pungent than those that were homozygous or heterozygous. Thus, these findings suggest that AFAT04B03 is an effective selection marker for low pungency in bunching onion breeding.  相似文献

Genetic correlations caused by pleiotropy or linkage disequilibrium may influence the joint evolution of multiple traits as populations or taxa diverge. The evolutionary transition from outcrossing to selfing has occurred numerous times and is often accompanied by phenotypic and genetic changes in multiple traits such as flower size, pollen-ovule ratio, stigma and anther maturity and the age of reproductive maturity. Determining whether the recurring patterns of multitrait change are because of selection on each trait independently and/or the result of genetic correlations among traits can shed light on the mechanism that accounts for such convergence. Here, we evaluate whether floral traits are genetically correlated with each other and/or with whole-plant traits within- and between-populations and taxa. We report results from a greenhouse study conducted on two pairs of sister taxa with contrasting mating systems: the autogamously selfing Clarkia exilis and its predominantly outcrossing progenitor C. unguiculata and the autogamous Clarkia xantiana ssp. parviflora and its outcrossing progenitor C. xantiana ssp. xantiana. We examined variation within and covariation among maternal families in three populations of each taxon with respect to the age at first flower, the rate of successive flower production and the number of days between bud break and anther dehiscence and stigma receptivity within individual flowers. Based on phenotypic divergence between sister taxa, bivariate regressions, correlations among maternal family means and analysis of covariance (ancova), we did not find unilateral support indicating that genetic constraints govern the joint distribution of floral and whole-plant traits.  相似文献

We have investigated phenotypic, environmental, within-population broad-sense genetic correlations and among-population genetic correlations for 17 traits in six populations of Heterosperma pinnatum Cav. (Compositae) grown in the greenhouse. The within-population genetic, environmental, and phenotypic correlations were somewhat similar while the among-population genetic correlations showed little correspondence to these. The different correlation matrices were compared to a hypothesis matrix, which predicted higher correlations for groups of functionally and developmentally related traits. The groups were seed and head traits, size and shape traits, and life history traits, with subgroups predicted to have still higher correlations. The phenotypic and environmental matrices corresponded well to the hypothesis matrix, the within-population broad-sense genetic matrix showed weaker, though still significant, correspondence, and the among-population genetic correlations showed no correspondence. Genetic correlations did not differ significantly among populations, though the power of these comparisons was low. Some particular genetic correlations are discussed as possible examples of adaptive correlations (e.g., a negative correlation between dispersal and dormancy) and as examples of developmental or physiological constraints including life-history tradeoffs.  相似文献

Strong covariation among traits suggests the presence of constraints on their independent evolution due to pleiotropy, to linkage, or to selective forces that maintain particular trait combinations. We examined floral trait covariation among individuals, among maternal families within and across populations, and over time, in greenhouse-raised plants of the autogamous Spergularia marina. We had three aims. First, since the phenotype of traits expressed by modular organs often changes as individuals age, estimates of the degree of genetic covariation between such traits may also change over time. To seek evidence for this, we measured weekly (for five weeks) an array of floral traits among plants representing ~ 10 maternal families from each of four populations. The statistical significance of the phenotypic and among-family correlations among traits changed over time. Second, we compared populations with respect to trait covariation to determine whether populations or traits appear to be evolving independently of one another. Differences observed among populations suggest that they have diverged genetically. Third, we sought correlations that might reflect constraints on the independent evolution of floral traits. Investment in another and ovule production per flower vary independently among maternal families; there was no evidence for a “trade-off” between male and female investment. We propose that in autogamous taxa one should not find a negative correlation between pollen and ovule production per flower, as such taxa cannot evolve sexual specialization and should be under strong selection to maintain an efficient pollen:ovule ratio, preventing the evolution of male-biased or female-biased genotypes. We found that other pairs of floral traits, however, expressed highly signficant correlation coefficients, suggesting the presence of some evolutionary constraints, at least within some populations, although their strength depended on exactly when flowers were sampled.  相似文献

We have investigated the relationship between phenotypic and genetic correlations among a large number of quantitative traits (36) in three different environments in order to determine their degree of disparity and whether phenotypic correlations could be substituted for their genetic counterparts whatever the environment. We also studied the influence of the environment on genetic and phenotypic correlations. Twenty accessions (full-sib families) ofMedicago luPulina were grown in three environments. In two of these two levels of environmental stress were generated by harvesting plants at flowering and by growing plants in competition with barley, respectively. A third environment, with no treatment, was used as a control with no stress. Average values of pod and shoot weight indicate that competition induces the highest level of stress. The genetic and phenotypic correlations among the 36 traits were compared. Significant phenotypic correlations were obtained easily, while there was no genetic variation for 1 or the 2 characters being correlated. The large positive correlation between the genetic and phenotypic correlation matrices indicated a good proportionality between genetic and phenotypic correlations matrices but not their similarity. In a given environment, when only those traits with a significant genetic variance were taken into account, there were still differences between genetic and phenotypic correlations, even when levels of significance for phenotypic correlations were lowered. Consequently, it is dangerous to substitute phenotypic correlations for genetic correlations. The number of traits that showed genetic variability increased with increasing environmental stress, consequently the number of significant genetic correlations also increased with increasing environmental stress. In contrast, the number of significant phenotypic correlations was not influnced by the environment. The structures of both phenotypic and genetic matrices, however, depended on the environment, and not in the same way for both matrices.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that body size is a heritable trait phenotypically correlated with several fitness components in wild populations of the cactophilic fly Drosophila buzzatii. To obtain further information on size-related variation, heritabilities as well as genetic and phenotypic correlations among size-related traits of several body parts (head, thorax and wings) were estimated. The study was carried out on an Argentinean natural population in which size-related selection was previously detected. The genetic parameters were estimated using offspring-parent regressions (105 families) in the laboratory G2 generation of a sample of wild flies. The traits were also scored in Wild-Caught Flies (WCF). Laboratory-Reared Flies (LRF) were larger and less variable than WCF. Although heritability estimates were significant for all traits, heritabilities were higher for thorax-wing traits than for head traits. Phenotypic and genetic correlations were all positive. The highest genetic correlations were found between traits which are both functionally and developmentally related. Genetic and phenotypic correlations estimated in the lab show similar correlation patterns (r = 0.49; TP = 0.02, Mantel's test). However, phenotypic correlations were found to be typically larger in WCF than in LRF. The genetic correlation matrix estimated in the relatively homogeneous lab environment is not simply a constant multiplicative factor of the phenotypic correlation matrix estimated in WCF. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Dispersal is a key process for understanding the persistence of populations as well as the capacity of organisms to respond to environmental change. Therefore, understanding factors that may facilitate or constrain the evolution of dispersal is of crucial interest. Assessments of phenotypic variation in various behavioural, physiological and morphological traits related to insect dispersal and flight performance are common, yet very little is known about the genetic associations among these traits. We have used experiments on the butterfly Bicyclus anynana to estimate genetic variation and covariation in seven behavioural, physiological and morphological traits related to flight potential and hence dispersal. Our goal was to characterize the heritabilities and genetic correlations among these traits and thus to understand more about the evolution of dispersal‐related life‐history syndromes in butterflies. Using a version of the animal model, we showed that all of the traits varied between the sexes, and most were either positively or negatively (phenotypically and/or genetically) correlated with body size. Heritable variation was present in most traits, with the highest heritabilities estimated for body mass and thorax ratio. The variance in flight activity among multiple measurements for the same individual was high even after controlling for the prevailing environmental conditions, indicating the importance of behavioural switching and/or inherent randomness associated with this type of movement. A number of dispersal‐related traits showed phenotypic correlations among one another, but only a few of these were associated with significant genetic correlations indicating that covariances between these traits in Bicyclus anynana are mainly environmentally induced.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship among traits distinguishing populations of C. tectorum and the extent to which existing trait associations reflect underlying (genetic) tradeoffs. Highly consistent trait associations were found in a comparison of 52 populations representing the western part of the geographical range of the species. In addition to a tight integration of traits reflecting plant stature and inflorescence development, there were consistent links between vegetative and reproductive traits; populations characterized by individuals with large leaves and tall stems with terminal branches usually had larger heads, flowers and fruits (achenes) than those whose individuals had small leaves and a short stem branched from the base. There was a weak negative relationship between the extent of leaf dissection and plant stature; short and compact plants had more deeply lobed leaves than tall plants with terminal branches. Few of these associations were present among families representing a single population of C. tectorum , but there was remarkable similarity between the correlations at the between-population level and those obtained in two segregating F2 progenies of crosses between contrasting populations. Hence, provided that the F2 correlations have a strong genetic basis, it appears that the course of population divergence has been constrained by the underlying correlation structure, although some trait associations may also be a result of selection operating in a correlated fashion on functionally related traits, perhaps leading to linkage disequilibrium of parental traits in the first segregating generation of a cross between ecologically differentiated populations.  相似文献

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a starchy root crop grown in the tropics mainly by small-scale farmers even though agro-industrial processing is rapidly increasing. For this processing market improved varieties with high dry matter root content (DMC) is required. Potentially toxic cyanogenic glucosides are synthesized in the leaves and translocated to the roots. Selection for varieties with low cyanogenic glucoside potential (CNP) and high DMC is among the principal objectives in cassava breeding programs. However, these traits are highly influenced by the environmental conditions and the genetic control of these traits is not well understood. An S(1) population derived from a cross between two bred cassava varieties (MCOL 1684 and Rayong 1) that differ in CNP and DMC was used to study the heritability and genetic basis of these traits. A broad-sense heritability of 0.43 and 0.42 was found for CNP and DMC, respectively. The moderate heritabilities for DMC and CNP indicate that the phenotypic variation of these traits is explained by a genetic component. We found two quantitative trait loci (QTL) on two different linkage groups controlling CNP and six QTL on four different linkage groups controlling DMC. One QTL for CNP and one QTL for DMC mapped near each other, suggesting pleiotrophy and/or linkage of QTL. The two QTL for CNP showed additive effects while the six QTL for DMC showed additive effect, dominance or overdominance. This study is a first step towards developing molecular marker tools for efficient breeding of CNP and DMC in cassava.

We sampled four wild populations of the highly autogamous Spergularia marina (Caryophyllaceae) in California to detect and to measure the magnitude of within- and among-population sources of phenotypic variation in gender and floral traits. From flowers and fruits collected from field and greenhouse-raised plants, we measured ovule number, seed number, mean seed mass, pollen production (greenhouse families only), mean pollen grain volume (greenhouse families only), anther number, anther/ovule ratio, pollen/ovule ratio (estimated using different flowers for pollen than for ovules; greenhouse families only), petal number, and petal size. Using greenhouse-raised genotypes, variation among maternal families nested within populations was evaluated for each trait to determine whether populations differ in the degree of maternally transmitted phenotypic variation. For each population, we used 15 greenhouse-raised maternal families to estimate the broad-sense heritability and genetic coefficient of variation of each floral trait. The magnitude and statistical significance of broad-sense heritability estimates were trait- and population-specific. Each population was characterized by a different combination of floral traits that expressed significant maternally transmitted (presumably genetic) variation under greenhouse conditions. Flowers representing two populations expressed low levels of maternally transmitted variation (three or fewer of nine measured traits exhibited significant maternal family effects on phenotype), while flowers representing the other two populations exhibited significant maternal family effects on phenotype for five or more traits. Our ability to detect statistically significant differences among the four populations depended upon the conditions under which plants were grown (field vs. greenhouse) and on the floral trait observed. Field-collected flowers exhibited significant differences among population means for all traits except anther number. Flowers sampled from greenhouse-raised maternal families differed among populations for all traits except ovule number, seed number, and petal size. We detected negligible evidence that genetic correlations constrain selection on floral traits in Spergularia marina.  相似文献

The general lack of phenotypic correlation among skeletal nonmetric traits has been interpreted as indicating a lack of genetic correlation among these traits. Nonmetric traits scored on animals in the skeletal collection of rhesus macaques from Cayo Santiago are used to calculate phenotypic, genetic, and environmental correlations between traits. The results show that even when phenotypic correlations are low, there may be large, significant genetic correlations among these traits. The genetic correlation pattern suggests that genes which affect nonmetric trait variation act primarily at a local level in the cranium, even though there are genes with pleiotropic effects on skeletal nonmetric traits throughout the cranium. Environmental and phenotypic correlations do not show this neighborhood pattern of correlation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations of body weight at 6 weeks of age (BW6), as well as final carcass yield, and moisture, protein, fat and ash contents, using data from 3,422 F2 chickens originated from reciprocal cross between a broiler and a layer line. Variance components were estimated by the REML method, using animal models for evaluating random additive genetic and fixed contemporary group (sex, hatch and genetic group) effects. The heritability estimates (h(2)) for BW6, carcass yield and percentage of carcass moisture were 0.31 ± 0.07, 0.20 ± 0.05 and 0.33 ± 0.07, respectively. The h(2) for the percentages of protein, fat and ash on a dry matter basis were 0.48 ± 0.09, 0.55 ± 0.10 and 0.36 ± 0.08, respectively. BW6 had a positive genetic correlation with fat percentage in the carcass, but a negative one with protein and ash contents. Carcass yield, thus, appears to have only low genetic association with carcass composition traits. The genetic correlations observed between traits, measured on a dry matter basis, indicated that selection for carcass protein content may favor higher ash content and a lower percentage of carcass fat.  相似文献

Phenotypic correlations and quantitative trait loci (QTL) for important growth traits and a surrogate of intrinsic water-use efficiency (leaf delta(13)C) were analysed in a willow pedigree of 92 full-sibling clones grown under two water regimes. The major objective was to examine the genetic basis of the phenotypic correlations. Cuttings of Salix were glasshouse-grown during one growing season. The relative growth rate (RGR) and underlying traits were assessed. QTL analysis was conducted based on an available linkage map for Salix. Leaf area productivity and leaf nitrogen productivity were more important in determining RGR than leaf area ratio and specific leaf area. However, phenotypic correlations among growth traits partly varied between the two environments. QTL were detected for most growth traits, among them many common QTL for different traits. The QTL pattern reflected the phenotypic correlation pattern. None of the QTL for the complex traits was consistent across the different environments. The results demonstrate a genetic basis for phenotypic correlations among growth traits in Salix, and provide evidence for the existence of 'master switches' regulating some of the traits.  相似文献

Despite their economic importance, some tropical crop species are largely neglected when it comes to conducting genetic studies characterizing target traits for breeding. Herein, genetic and phenotypic parameters as well quantitative trait loci (QTL) are described for the first time in a full-sib progeny of sweet passion fruit (Passiflora alata). A hundred F1 individuals were evaluated in two locations for seven fruit traits: diameter of fruit (DF, in mm), length of fruit (LF, in mm), weight of fruit (WF, in g), thickness of fruit skin (TS, in mm), weight of fruit skin (WS, in g), weight of fruit pulp (WP, in g) and soluble solids (SS, in °Brix). Mixed models fitted complex, unstructured genetic variance-covariance matrices for all traits in phenotypic analysis. Because of important genetic correlations among skin and pulp traits, multiplicative index selection to select the most promising individuals was successfully applied. A previously reported integrated map supported composite interval mapping (CIM) analyses. In total, we found 22 QTLs mapped in seven out of nine linkage groups. Heritabilities (from 59.8 % to 82.7 %) and proportion of phenotypic variance explained by the QTLs (from 42.0 % to 64.3 %) were comparable for each trait. Principal component analysis on TS, WS and WP showed that the first two principal components (PCs) accounted for 93.6 % of the total variability. CIM analyses on these two PCs revealed five putative QTLs controlling variation for these three traits simultaneously. Thus, genetic improvement for sweet passion fruit should be based on correlations between traits and QTL-related information can be a useful tool.  相似文献

Patterns of phenotypic and genotypic variability in two populations of the moss, Funaria hygrometrica, were investigated using measurements of gametophytic and sporophytic morphology, sporophytic reproductive output, spore germination, gametophytic growth rates and tolerances of copper, cadmium, and low nutrient conditions, and electrophoretically detectable enzyme variation. The two populations differed in all traits measured, but complete monomorphism within populations at 14 enzyme loci suggested that each represented a single clone. Variability in gametophytic growth rates and responses to different experimental media, however, occurred among haploid sib families (families of meiotic progeny derived from the same sporophyte) and among sibs within families within both populations, suggesting high levels of genetic variability. Low mean reproductive output and a high level of variability among sporophytes in a mine site population probably reflected heavy metal toxicity. Based on this study, in combination with previous work on F. hygrometrica (Shaw, 19906), somatic mutation and/or nongenetic effects appear to contribute significantly to phenotypic variability in natural populations.  相似文献

Plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) are important traits in maize (Zea mays L.) breeding. Previous research has indicated that these traits are influenced by quantitative trait loci (QTL). However, previous studies attempting to identify the genetic bases of PH and EH have ignored the possibility that cytoplasmic effects and cytonuclear interactions may influence these traits. The objectives of this study were to identify the cytonuclear epistatic QTL and to evaluate the contributions of cytoplasm and QTL × cytoplasm interactions to phenotypic variation of PH and EH. A reciprocal mating design was conducted to generate F2 mapping populations comprising 120 F2 plants from the direct cross (JB × Y53) and 120 F2 plants from the reciprocal cross (Y53 × JB). F2:3 mapping populations were further generated with 91 direct F2:3 families and 120 reciprocal F2:3 families (ten plants per family). The PH and EH of the above F2 and F2:3 mapping populations were evaluated in the same field at the same experimental station in 2007 and 2008. A genetic linkage map with 154 microsatellite markers was constructed, which covered 1,735.0 cM of the maize genome with an average marker spacing of 11.3 cM. A joint-analysis method incorporating the cytonuclear interaction mapping approach was proposed and performed to detect cytonuclear interacting QTL affecting PH and EH. We identified six cytonuclear epistatic QTL affecting PH and five affecting EH. The average phenotypic variance explained by the genetic components of the QTL × cytoplasm interaction for each QTL was 18 % for PH and 9 % for EH. In addition, we observed cytoplasmic effects contributing substantially to phenotypic variance, reaching 9 and 40 % of the phenotypic contributions to PH and EH, respectively.  相似文献

We performed a genome-wide QTL scan for production traits in a line cross between Duroc and Pietrain breeds of pigs, which included 585 F(2) progeny produced from 31 full-sib families genotyped with 106 informative microsatellites. A linkage map covering all 18 autosomes and spanning 1987 Kosambi cM was constructed. Thirty-five phenotypic traits including body weight, growth, carcass composition and meat quality traits were analysed using least square regression interval mapping. Twenty-four QTL exceeded the genome-wide significance threshold, while 47 QTL reached the suggestive threshold. These QTL were located at 28 genomic regions on 16 autosomal chromosomes and QTL in 11 regions were significant at the genome-wide level. A QTL affecting pH value in loin was detected on SSC1 between marker-interval S0312-S0113 with strong statistical support (P < 3.0 x 10(-14)); this QTL was also associated with meat colour and conductivity. QTL for carcass composition and average daily gain was also found on SSC1, suggesting multiple QTL. Seventeen genomic segments had only a single QTL that reached at least suggestive significance. Forty QTL exhibited additive inheritance whereas 31 QTL showed (over-) dominance effects. Two QTL for trait backfat thickness were detected on SSC2; a significant paternal effect was found for a QTL in the IGF2 region while another QTL in the middle of SSC2 showed Mendelian expression.  相似文献

The trajectory of phenotypic evolution is constrained in the short term by genetic correlations among traits. However, the extent to which genetic correlations impose a lasting constraint is generally unknown. Here, I examine the genetic architecture of life-history variation in male and female gametophytes from two populations of the moss Ceratodon purpureus, focusing on genetic correlations within and between the sexes. A significant negative correlation between allocation to vegetative and reproductive tissue was evident in males of both populations, but not females. All traits showed between-sex correlations of significantly less than one, indicating additive genetic variance for sexual dimorphism. The degree of dimorphism for traits was significantly negatively associated with the strength of the between-sex correlation. The structure of genetic correlations among life-history traits was more divergent between the two populations in females than in males. Collectively, these results suggest that genetic correlations do not impose a lasting constraint on the evolution of life-history variation in the species.  相似文献
