It is widely accepted that the APD (action potential duration) restitution plays a key role in the initializing and maintaining of the reentry arrhythmias. The Luo-Rudy II models paced with different protocols showed that the current APD had a complex relation with the previous APDs and diastole intervals (DIs). This relation could not be accurately described by a single exponential function. We used an artificial neural network to formularize this relation. The results suggested that back-propagation (BP) network could predict the current APD from the information of the first three previous beats. This would help provide a target for potential anti-arrhythmic therapies.  相似文献

Objectives. The flow velocity-pressure gradient (v-dp) relation is clinically used to assess coronary stenoses. This in vitro study aimed to investigate the ability to determine the impact of each individual stenosis in the setting of two consecutive stenoses, the effect of variable stenosis reference diameters and the impact of one or two wires in a stenosis, on the v-dp relation. Methods. The model consisted of a reservoir and different sized tubes and stenoses. Pressure gradient and flow velocity were assessed with a pressure and a Doppler wire. By plotting flow velocity and pressure gradient on an X-Y plot, the v-dp relation was determined. Results. The v-dp relation of a proximal stenosis was not influenced by a distal stenosis. The diameter of the segment where flow velocity was measured influenced the v-dp relation. This could be corrected by substituting flow velocity with volume flow. The presence of one or two wires in a stenosis made the v-dp relation substantially steeper. Conclusions. The v-dp relation can be used to determine the significance of each individual stenosis in arteries with consecutive stenoses, provided that the distance between the stenoses is large enough. This paper discusses the relation for soaps between sensory attributes and both liking and image attributes. A clear relation emerges between sensory attribute level and liking, but no clear relation emerges between sensory attributes and image attributes. There are two possible conclusions to be drawn from these results. One conclusion is that consumers can validly assign ratings to the image attribute of a soap, but that there is no way to trace this image rating back to sensory inputs. This conclusion suggests that more research is needed to understand the meaning of image attributes. The second conclusion is that consumers cannot validly rate the image attributes of a soap, even though they can complete the questionnaire. This second conclusion implies that consumers can validly rate some attributes (e.g., sensory, liking), but not others (e.g., image), and that it may be misleading to collect and attempt to analyze image ratings for health and beauty aids products.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to investigate whether there was any relation between the aurora borealis (measured as the geomagnetic activity) and the number of acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) in the northern, partly polar, area of Sweden. The AMI cases were collected from The Northern Sweden MONICA (multinational MONItoring of trends and determinants of CArdiovascular disease) AMI registry between 1985 and 1998, inclusive, and the information on the geomagnetic activity from continuous measurements at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Kiruna. In the analyses, both the relation between the individual AMI case and ambient geomagnetic activity, and the relation between the mean daily K index and the daily number of AMI cases were tested. We found no statistically significant relation between the number of fatal or non-fatal AMI cases, the number of sudden deaths or the number of patients with chest pain without myocardial damage, and geomagnetic activity. Our data do not support a relation between the geomagnetic activity and AMI.  相似文献

The additivity rule of counterion activity or osmotic pressure in rodlike polyelectrolyte solutions has been discussed on the basis of the Fokker-Planck and Poisson equations in relation to the fluctuation of counterion distribution. This new theory has concluded that the additivity rule of counterion activity is less applicable than that of osmotic pressure due to the electric expansion force acting on the free-volume surface resulting from the fluctuation of counterion distribution. The theory has introduced an approximate relation between the counterion activities in the mixture solution of divalent and monovalent counterions, such that Deltaa+ = DeltaC++ - Deltaa++, in which Deltaa+ represents the increase of activity of monovalent counter-ions resulting from the addition of divalent counterionsDeltaC++, (in molar) to the solution, and Deltaa++ means the increase of the divalent counterion activity (in molar) in this process. This relation has been experimentally examined for Na-PSS solutions in the process of Cu2+ ion addition by the use of Na+ and Cu2+ sensitive electrodes, and it has been turned out that the relation is established in the low charge state of polyion.  相似文献

A general predictive relation for the convection heat transfer from animal forms is developed. This relation is based on the convection equation for a sphere, and employs a simple, unique characteristic dimension to represent the animal which is the cube root of the animal volume. The accuracy of this relation is established through comparison with available convection results from animal shapes ranging in size and shape from spiders to cows. This relation allows an extrapolation to animal shapes for which data are not available. Results are also presented for the enhancement of convection heat transfer due to natural turbulence. A procedure is outlined for estimating the convecture heat loss from an animal in the natural outdoor environment.  相似文献

A contribution to a special issue on Hormones and Human Competition.This study investigated the relation between competition, testosterone (T), and cortisol (C) in women. One hundred and twenty female participants competed against a male confederate in a computerized laboratory task. The task was preprogrammed so that half the women won and half of the women lost the competition. T and C concentrations were measured in saliva samples collected at four time points before and after the competition. Accuracy and reaction time during the competition were recorded. T and C increased directly after the competition, though not significantly for C, and then decreased over time regardless of the competition outcome. Regression analyses demonstrated that baseline T was significantly and positively associated with competition accuracy, though only in individuals who were low in C. Individuals who were high in C showed no relation between T and accuracy. This relation was further qualified by competition outcome. Losers of the competition showed a significant positive relation between baseline T levels and competition accuracy, though only if they were low in C. No relation was found between T and accuracy in losers who were high in C. Winners of the competition showed no relation between T and accuracy, regardless of whether C levels were high or low. These results are in line with the dual-hormone hypothesis, whereby the effects of T on status-seeking behaviors are dependent on C levels for individuals whose status is threatened.  相似文献

This study investigated potential differences on load dependence of relaxation rate and diastolic function between Oryctolagus cuniculus and Ratus norvegicus, which have constitutive differences in the mechanisms involved in myocardial inactivation. Load dependence of relaxation rate and diastolic function were evaluated with the response of left ventricular time constant tau and diastolic pressure-dimension relation to beat-to-beat aortic constrictions in open-chest rabbits and rats. Afterload levels were normalized, being expressed as a percentage of peak isovolumetric pressure (relative load). In control heartbeats, relaxation rate and diastolic function were similar in the two animal species. They presented, however, distinct responses to afterload elevations. In rabbits, time constant decreased approximately 7% and diastolic pressure-dimension relation remained unchanged when afterload was elevated to a relative load of 73-76%. Above this afterload level, a significant deceleration of relaxation rate (increase of time constant) and an upward shift of diastolic pressure-dimension relation were observed. In rats, afterload elevations accelerated pressure fall up to a relative load of 97-100% and no afterload-induced shift of the diastolic pressure-dimension relation was observed. This study provides, therefore, evidence that Oryctolagus cuniculus has lower afterload reserve of myocardial relaxation and diastolic function than Ratus norvegicus.  相似文献

We consider a two-group epidemic model with treatment and establish a final size relation that gives the extent of the epidemic. This relation can be established with arbitrary mixing between the groups even though it may not be feasible to determine the reproduction number for the model. If the mixing of the two groups is proportionate, there is an explicit expression for the reproductive number and the final size relation is expressible in terms of the components of the reproduction number. We also extend the results to a two-group influenza model with proportionate mixing. Some numerical simulations suggest that (i) the assumption of no disease deaths is a good approximation if the disease death rate is small and (ii) a one-group model is a close approximation to a two-group model but a two-group model is necessary for comparing targeted treatment strategies. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relation between adipose tissue polyunsaturated fatty acids, an index of long-term or habitual fatty acid dietary intake and depression. The sample consisted of 150 elderly males from the island of Crete. The subjects were survivors of the Greek Seven Countries Study group. The mean age was 84 years. The number of subjects with complete data on all variables studied was 63. Subjects were examined by the Preventive Medicine and Nutrition Clinic of the University of Crete. Depression was assessed through the use of the short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Depression correlated negatively with adipose tissue alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3). Depressed subjects had significantly reduced (-10.5%) adipose tissue C18:3n-3 levels than non-depressed subjects. The observed negative relation between adipose tissue C18:3n-3 and depression, in the present study, appears to indicate increasing long-term dietary C18:3n-3 intakes with decreasing depression. This agrees with findings of other studies indicating an inverse relation between depression and consumption of fish and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This is the first literature report of a relation between adipose tissue C18:3n-3 and depression. Furthermore, this is the first report of a relation between adipose PUFA and depression in an elderly sample. Depression has been reported to be associated with elevated cytokines, such as, IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, INF-gamma and INF-alpha. Fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, have been reported to inhibit cytokine production. The observed negative relation between adipose C18:3n-3 and depression, therefore, may stem from the inhibiting effect of C18:3n-3 or its long-chain metabolites on cytokine synthesis.  相似文献

Although the isobologram is presently the most widely used method of analysis for combined effects of agents, there are several different interpretations of the linear isobole isobole in regard to its use as a criterion of interaction. An investigation of the differential aspects of the linear isobole relation may cast some light in this regard. By conceptual extension of the present single effect level (i.e. effect-point) relation of the linear isobole to an effect-neighbourhood relation in which the linear isobole holds over a small continuous range of effect levels, the mathematical differential of the linear isobole can be developed and investigated. This differential aspect provides some useful insights into the implication and interpretation of the linear isobole relation when used as a general criterion in agent interaction studies. it can also serve as the mathematical basis for the formulation of analytic schemes in which the linear isobole relation is applicable over a continuous range of effect levels.  相似文献

Systematic expression analysis of mycotoxin biosynthesis genes by real-time PCR and microarray was carried out to examine the relationship between growth and general expression patterns in relation to single environmental factors such as temperature, water activity (a(w)) and pH and water activity x temperature interactions. For single parameters, one major peak of expression occurred close to optimum growth conditions. However, a second minor peak was observed under suboptimal growth conditions, when intermediate environmental stress was imposed on Aspergillus parasiticus (afl genes), Penicillium verrucosum (ota genes) and Fusarium culmorum (tri genes). This expression profile pattern was more pronounced in relation to changes in temperature and a(w) than to pH. In a two-factorial experimental design with temperature xa(w) regimes, again two peaks of expression were observed for cluster genes after microarray analysis, one close to those giving optimal growth and one under imposed stress conditions. Interestingly, when the activity of single genes of the microarray data were plotted in relation to the two parameters, again a two-peak expression profile became obvious independently for both parameters. Expression of the mycotoxin biosynthesis genes was followed exactly by phenotypic mycotoxin production. This expression profile appears to be generic across the mycotoxigenic fungi examined.  相似文献

Here, we review the functional roles of cyclic ADP-ribose and CD38, a transmembrane protein with ADP-ribosyl cyclase activity, in mouse social behavior via the regulation of oxytocin (OXT) release, an essential component of social cognition. Herein we describe data detailing the molecular mechanism of CD38-dependent OXT secretion in CD38 knockout mice. We also review studies that used OXT, OXT receptor (OXTR), or CD38 knockout mice. Additionally, we compare the behavioral impairments that occur in these knockout mice in relation to the OXT system and CD38. This review also examines autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is characterized by social and communication impairments, in relation to defects in the OXT system. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the human CD38 gene are possible risk factors for ASD via inhibition of OXT function. Further analysis of CD38 in relation to the OXT system may provide a better understanding of the neuroendocrinological roles of OXT and CD38 in the hypothalamus and of the pathophysiology of ASD. Evidence is presented, arising from an analysis of published data on tumour growth in three species of laboratory animals and in human multiple myeloma supporting a species specific relation between two supposedly independent parameters in the Gompertz equations frequently used to quantify tumour growth curves. This evidence supports the conjecture of Norton et al. (1976), based on their observations of the growth kinetics of a murine melanoma and a rat mammary carcinoma, that such a relation may be a general feature of tumour growth. Published data on the growth of xenografts of human colorectal tumours in immune-deprived mice suggests that the observed growth relation reflects the ability of a particular species to support a tumour of a certain maximum size. the existence of this relation greatly simplifies the task of predicting complete patterns of undisturbed neoplastic growth in these species.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: Association rule analysis methods are important techniques applied to gene expression data for finding expression relationships between genes. However, previous methods implicitly assume that all genes have similar importance, or they ignore the individual importance of each gene. The relation intensity between any two items has never been taken into consideration. Therefore, we proposed a technique named REMMAR (RElational-based Multiple Minimum supports Association Rules) algorithm to tackle this problem. This method adjusts the minimum relation support (MRS) for each gene pair depending on the regulatory relation intensity to discover more important association rules with stronger biological meaning. RESULTS: In the actual case study of this research, REMMAR utilized the shortest distance between any two genes in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene regulatory network (GRN) as the relation intensity to discover the association rules from two S.cerevisiae gene expression datasets. Under experimental evaluation, REMMAR can generate more rules with stronger relation intensity, and filter out rules without biological meaning in the protein-protein interaction network (PPIN). Furthermore, the proposed method has a higher precision (100%) than the precision of reference Apriori method (87.5%) for the discovered rules use a literature survey. Therefore, the proposed REMMAR algorithm can discover stronger association rules in biological relationships dissimilated by traditional methods to assist biologists in complicated genetic exploration.  相似文献

1. The cereal field carabid beetle Amara similata was selected to elucidate the role of seeds and insects as food sources. Three experiments were performed to rank different weed seeds and insects in terms of food value: (i) fecundity in relation to adult diet, (ii) larval survival in relation to diet and (iii) larval survival in relation to parental diet.
2. Seeds were found to be of high value and insects of low value both for adults and larvae. Adding insects to a seed diet gave no significant improvement. The value of single species of seeds varied within adults and larvae, but also between adults and larvae. This is the first report that Amara larvae are granivorous.
3. The value of different insects varied by species. Cereal aphid species were of the lowest value both for adult and larval beetles. On a diet of mixed insects, the adults were able to produce a low number of eggs but the larvae all died before pupation.
4. There was no simple relation between survival of the larvae and the quality of the parents' diet.  相似文献
