Abstract Poor growth of Quercus robur L. (oak) trees has been reported on mine sites where overburden and subsoil have been used in the reinstatement of surface layers. This stunting has been attributed to a lack of macronutrients and to an adverse soil environment for root growth and mycorrhizal development. Growth, mineral nutrition, and ectomycorrhizal colonization of Q. robur seedlings were studied in an experiment carried out under controlled growing conditions in which mine spoil material was enriched with a leaf litter mulch. Enrichment of mine spoil material was found to produce a significant increase in growth and foliar N concentrations of oak seedlings. Inoculation with three taxa of ectomycorrhizal fungi did not benefit seedlings when mine spoil was the only substrate, possibly due to the poor physical properties of the unamended spoil and lack of nutrients. Inoculation with two taxa, Laccaria laccata and Hebeloma crustuliniforme, isolated from 3‐year‐old trees produced a significant stimulation of growth in the organically enriched treatment, which was believed to be due to greater uptake of mineralized N. However, Cortinarius anomalus isolated from fruit bodies associated with a 15‐year‐old tree did not increase biomass. The presence of organic matter was found to result in a significant stimulation of mycorrhizal infection by both inoculum and contaminant mycobionts. Recommendations are made for improving the establishment and growth of oak seedlings on reinstated sites.  相似文献

Conventional and nitrite-free frankfurters in loosely wrapped packages were compared as to their ability to support growth of Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and their naturally occurring spoilage flora at 7 C (simulating refrigerated storage) and 20 C (simulating possible temperature abuse). At 7 C Salmonella did not grow in either type of frankfurter; Staphylococcus and the natural spoilage flora sometimes grew more rapidly in the absence of nitrite, but the difference was not significant. At 20 C growth of Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and of the spoilage flora was, at most, only slightly faster on nitrite-free frankfurters. Salmonella was not suppressed in broth culture experiments the pH and nitrite content found in frankfurters. Although either type of frankfurter can become hazardous due to growth of Salmonella or Staphylococcus, no unusual or additional hazard resulted from the omission of nitrite from frankfurters.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of the earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus (Muller) on the rate of mineralization of cattle dung‐amended iron (Fe2 + ) ore mine wastes and its preference for partially decomposed leaf litter with contrasting chemical composition were studied in pot trials. The growth and survival rates of earthworms showed significant positive correlations with percent of organic matter. During 96 days of exposure, the earthworms significantly increased exchangeable Ca2 + , Mg2 + , PO43 ? and NH4‐N. Iron ore mine wastes amended with 5–10% organic matter supported earthworm fauna better than mine wastes amended with 0–3% organic matter. The leaf litter preference shown by the earthworm was, in descending order, Phyllanthus reticulatus, Tamarindus indica, Anacardium occidentale, Casuarina equisetifolia, Acacia auriculiformis, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. A significant positive correlation was observed between the survival and growth rates of earthworms and the nutrient contents of partially decomposed leaf litter. The first three plant species were significantly richer in nutrients, mainly organic carbon, calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, than the other two plant species. Acacia auriculiformis and E. camaldulensis litter were preferred less because of their high lignin and polyphenolic compounds, despite being rich in other macronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. It is concluded that the introduction of P. corethrurus to cattle dung‐amended (5–10%) iron ore mine wastes or revegetation of the sites with P. reticulatus, T. indica, and A. occidentale plant species should be attempted before earthworm introduction. The litter from these species acts as a source of food for earthworms, thereby hastening the process of restoration of abandoned iron ore mines of Goa, India.  相似文献

Potato plants (King Edward) were grown in soil in buckets underglass. Sampling young leaves showed that giving potassium initiallyincreased the magnesium concentration in leaf dry matter butdecreased it after the tubers started to form. Removing tubershad little effect on this change and did not prevent changesthat occurred in leaf potassium, phosphorus and calcium concentrations,suggesting that the partitioning of nutrients between shootgrowth and tuber growth was not regulated simply by competition. Removing the tubers or giving potassium increased the totallife of the haulm, by 50 and 27 d respectively. Tuber removallessened water use but giving potassium increased it, probablybecause it resulted in larger plants. Removing the tubers causedabnormal growths from axillary buds and thickened starchy stembases; the latter were augmented by giving potassium.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the relative rolesof leaf water status and root-sourced signals in mediating beanleaf responses to root hypoxia. To do so, the roots of beanplants under varied VPD (0.95 kPa to 0.25 KPa) were made hypoxic.Under all conditions, leaf growth rates and stomatal conductanceswere reduced. There was a transitory decline in leaf water potentialat high VPD which accounted for the initial reduction in leafgrowth rates and stomatal conductance. At low VPD, no waterdeficits were detected. Leaf growth inhibition and reduced stomatalconductance under low VPD treatments were unrelated to leafwater status and must be induced by some other factor. In vitrogrowth of leaf discs was reduced by xylem sap collected fromhypoxic roots. Exogenously applied ABA, at high concentrationsin KCl and sucrose, or at low concentrations diluted in xylemsap from aerated plants, inhibited in vitro growth of leaf discs.Applications of ABA in the transpiration stream reduced stomatalconductance.  相似文献

Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings were grown for63 d in a complete nutrient solution (pH 3.8) containing oneof three concentrations of Al (0, 0.75 or 2-0 mol m–3)and either 10 or 250 mmol m–3 Ca. Of all solution variables,the In of (Al3+)/(Ca2+), the solution activities ratio, wasmost closely correlated with declines in shoot and root growth.Ln (Al3+)/(Ca2+) also most closely predicted leaf and root [Mg],[Al], and [Al]/[Ca]. These three variables in turn were closelyrelated to growth. Toxic levels of (Al3+) and (Al3+)/(Ca2+)in solution are compared to levels in forest soils. Physiological and vegetative performances of three prairie grasses were investigated to assess their adaptation to soil conditions at two strip mine sites and a nearby railroad prairie. Additionally, rhizomes of the species were transplanted to a pot experiment and grown in both field soil and greenhouse potting medium to investigate the extent to which plants are limited under field conditions. Field measurements of photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance to water vapor were made on the three species monthly from May to late August. Gas exchange measurements on potted plants were made biweekly from early May to mid-July. In September, vegetative and flowering characteristics were measured on both field and potted plants. Field gas exchange rates were highest at one of the mines. Sorghastrum nutans had the highest rates at the mine sites, whereas Panicum virgatum had the highest rates at the prairie site. Potted plants from the prairie site usually exhibited the highest gas exchange rates, and Sorghastrum nutans had higher rates than Panicum virgatum and Andropogon gerardii. Potted plants in field soil generally had higher gas-exchange rates than plants growing in greenhouse potting medium, and potted plants had higher gas-exchange rates than field-grown plants. Vegetative and reproductive performance of field plants was highest at one of the mine sites. Potted plants in greenhouse medium had up to twice the vegetative and reproductive output as potted plants in field soil or plants growing in the field. The physiological and vegetative performance of these species indicates that they are well adapted to the soil conditions at these strip mine sites, and that they are a viable alternative to nonnative plantings for restoration.  相似文献

The effects of withdrawing nitrogen (N) from the nutrient solutionof adult tomato plants growing in rockwool in a greenhouse wereinvestigated over a 6 week period during fruit production. Thetreatment reduced total plant growth after a lag period of about2 weeks. The commercial fruit yield after 6 weeks of N deprivationwas 7.7 kg m-2compared to 9.3 kg m-2in control plants. Duringthe experiment, growth of the -N plants was fuelled by N reservescontained in both the substrate (rockwool) and in plant organs.The nitrogen budget calculated for -N plants showed that onlya small amount of organic-N was readily available for internalcycling from organs such as stems. It served mainly to feedgrowing fruits which were the main sinks in the plant. The studyalso established that stores of nitrate-N were fully depletedbut it took 45 d for the -N plants to metabolize completelytheir nitrate reserves. This indicates that internal nitrateis not a readily-accessible store of labile N. An estimationof the critical N concentration (%Nc) in the aerial dry matterwas made from the data. Thus, for a crop yielding about 9.9tons DM ha-1, %Ncwas close to 2.5%. This result is discussedin light of existing models that describe the ontogenic declinein %Ncin dry biomass of C3plants. The study indicates that thecurrent regime of N fertilization practised in soilless culturesnot only leads to ineffective nitrogen use but also to largelosses of N to the environment; N concentrations should be decreasedin feeding recipes. The balance between facilitation and competition in plants changes with species characteristics and environmental conditions. Facilitative effects are common in natural ecosystems, particularly in stressful environments or years. Contrarily, in artificial associations of plants, such as agroforestry systems, some authors have suggested that even when facilitative effects may occur, net balance of tree effects on grasses is usually negative, particularly in dry environments. The aim of this study was to determine the net effect of the exotic ponderosa pine on the native grass Festuca pallescens (St. Ives) Parodi in agroforestry systems in Patagonia. Soil water content, plant water status, and relative growth were measured in the grass growing in different treatments (determined by tree cover level) during two growing seasons with contrasting climatic conditions. Facilitative effects of trees over grass water status were recorded only when water availability was high. A net negative effect was detected on dates when soil water content was very low and evaporative demand was high. The strength of these negative effects depended on tree density and climatic conditions, being higher in treatments with lower tree canopy cover. These results indicate that the positive effect of trees could only be expected under relatively low stress conditions. However, relative growth of grasses was always similar in plants growing in forested plots than in open grassland. Differences in biomass allocation for grasses growing in shade and open habitats may reconcile these contrary results. Our results highlight the importance of the physiology of a species (relative drought and shade tolerance) in determining the response of a plant to a particular interacting species.  相似文献

High-N2-fixing activities of Frankia populations in root nodules on Alnus glutinosa improve growth performance of the host plant. Therefore, the establishment of active, nodule-forming populations of Frankia in soil is desirable. In this study, we inoculated Frankia strains of Alnus host infection groups I, IIIa, and IV into soil already harboring indigenous populations of infection groups (IIIa, IIIb, and IV). Then we amended parts of the inoculated soil with leaf litter of A. glutinosa and kept these parts of soil without host plants for several weeks until they were spiked with [15N]NO3 and planted with seedlings of A. glutinosa. After 4 months of growth, we analyzed plants for growth performance, nodule formation, specific Frankia populations in root nodules, and N2 fixation rates. The results revealed that introduced Frankia strains incubated in soil for several weeks in the absence of plants remained infective and competitive for nodulation with the indigenous Frankia populations of the soil. Inoculation into and incubation in soil without host plants generally supported subsequent plant growth performance and increased the percentage of nitrogen acquired by the host plants through N2 fixation from 33% on noninoculated, nonamended soils to 78% on inoculated, amended soils. Introduced Frankia strains representing Alnus host infection groups IIIa and IV competed with indigenous Frankia populations, whereas frankiae of group I were not found in any nodules. When grown in noninoculated, nonamended soil, A. glutinosa plants harbored Frankia populations of only group IIIa in root nodules. This group was reduced to 32% ± 23% (standard deviation) of the Frankia nodule populations when plants were grown in inoculated, nonamended soil. Under these conditions, the introduced Frankia strain of group IV was established in 51% ± 20% of the nodules. Leaf litter amendment during the initial incubation in soil without plants promoted nodulation by frankiae of group IV in both inoculated and noninoculated treatments. Grown in inoculated, amended soils, plants had significantly lower numbers of nodules infected by group IIIa (8% ± 6%) than by group IV (81% ± 11%). On plants grown in noninoculated, amended soil, the original Frankia root nodule population represented by group IIIa of the noninoculated, nonamended soil was entirely exchanged by a Frankia population belonging to group IV. The quantification of N2 fixation rates by 15N dilution revealed that both the indigenous and the inoculated Frankia populations of group IV had a higher specific N2-fixing capacity than populations belonging to group IIIa under the conditions applied. These results show that through inoculation or leaf litter amendment, Frankia populations with high specific N2-fixing capacities can be established in soils. These populations remain infective on their host plants, successfully compete for nodule formation with other indigenous or inoculated Frankia populations, and thereby increase plant growth performance.  相似文献

The study reports the growth, acidification and proteolysis of eight selected lactic acid bacteria in skim and soy milk. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition and antimicrobial profiles of skim and soy milk fermented by the lactic acid bacteria were also determined. Among eight lactic cultures (S. thermophilus MD2, L. helveticus V3, L. rhamnosus NS6, L. rhamnosus NS4, L. bulgaricus NCDC 09, L. acidophilus NCDC 15, L. acidophilus NCDC 298 and L. helveticus NCDC 292) studied, L. bulgaricus NCDC 09 and S. thermophilus MD2 decreased the pH of skim and soy milk in greater extent. Acid production (i.e. titratable acidity) by L. bulgaricus NCDC 09 and L. helveticus V3 was higher than other strains. Higher viable counts were observed in S. thermophilus MD2 and L. helveticus V3. Higher proteolysis was exhibited by S. thermophilus MD2 and L. rhamnosus NS6 in both skim and soy milk. Milk fermented by S. thermophilus (MD2) exhibited highest angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition. Antimicrobial activities of cell-free supernatant of milk fermented by S. thermophilus MD2 and L. helveticus V3 were higher. All the tested lactic acid bacteria performed better in skim milk as compared to soy milk.  相似文献

Bark rings and blossoms were removed from selected branchesof Y-shaped Sunset/M.7 apple trees at full bloom to give the10 possible combinations of ringed and unringed, deblossomedand cropping branches. Comparisons of leaf areas and dry weightper unit leaf area (specific leaf weight) showed that leavesfrom ringed branches were smaller and that extension shoot leavesfrom ringed branches had higher specific leaf weight. Fruitinghad little influence on area per leaf but gave lower specificleaf weight than deblossoming. Mineral analyses of leaves fromextension shoots in late summer were expressed in terms of unitleaf area and showed significant treatment effects. Ringingboth branches reduced the content of mineral elements but ringingonly one branch showed smaller effects on nitrogen, phosphorus,and potassium. This suggests that these elements are taken upthrough the xylem whenever the roots are adequately suppliedwith nutrients from the branches. Calcium content, on the otherhand, was appreciably reduced by any ringing, suggesting thatat least some of this element is normally transported in thephloem. There was no evidence in this experiment that low mineralnutrient levels in leaves on ringed branches had been limitingto dry matter production.  相似文献

The effect of shoot-orientation on the vegetative growth andapical dominance of rootstocks of apply, cherry, plum, and blackcurrantwas investigated. In all the species studied the total annualextension growth of horizontally grown trees was markedly lessthan that of vertical trees, and the effect was accentuatedwhen the plants were rotated. In cherry and plum the reducedtotal growth was due both to a smaller number of internodesand also to reduced internode length; in apple and blackcurrantthe difference in extension growth was mainly due to differencesin internode length. In experiments with laternal shots trainedin various positions it was found that the apical dominancenormally exhibited by the uppermost shoot is only manifestedwhen it occupies a vertical position. The normal apical dominancerelationships can be reversed if the uppermost shoot is grownhorizontally and the second shoot vertically. Gravitationaleffects appear to play a role in the normal apical dominancerelationships of the tree. In all species there is a markedtendency for laterals to grow out on the upper side of horizontaland arched plants. The effects of training arched trees into various positionsare considered in relation to current concepts regarding therole of auxin in apical dominance and the redistribution ofauxin in horizontal organs; it is concluded that the outgrowthof laterals in arched shoots cannot be interpreted primarilyin terms of these current concepts. The observed results suggestthat the outgrowth of lateral buds occurs at the nearest pointto the roots at which the shoot is diverted from the verticalposition, and that nutrients are diverted to the highest upwardlydirected meristem. It is proposed that the term gravimorphismshould be applied to these diverse effects of gravity on plantgrowth.  相似文献

The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), Funneliformis mosseae and Rhizophagus intraradices, on plant growth, leaf water status, chlorophyll concentration, photosynthesis, nutrient concentration, and fractal dimension (FD) characteristics of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) seedlings was studied in pot culture under well-watered, moderate drought stress, and severe drought stress treatments. Mycorrhizal seedlings had higher dry biomass, leaf relative water content (RWC), and water use efficiency (WUE) compared with non-mycorrhizal seedlings. Under all treatments, AMF colonization notably enhanced net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate, but decreased intercellular CO2 concentration. Leaf chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll concentrations were higher in AM seedlings than those in non-AM seedlings although there was no significant difference between AMF species. AMF colonization improved leaf C, N, and P concentrations, but decreased C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios. Mycorrhizal seedlings had a larger FD value than non-mycorrhizal seedlings. The FD value was positively and significantly correlated to the plant growth parameters, photosynthesis, RWC, WUE, and nutrient concentration but negatively correlated to leaf/stem ratio, C:N and C:P ratios, and intercellular CO2 concentration. We conclude that AMF lead to an improvement of growth performance of black locust seedlings under all growth conditions, including drought stress via improving leaf water status, chlorophyll concentration, photosynthesis, and nutrient uptake. Moreover, FD technology proved to be a powerful non-destructive method to characterize the effect of AMF on the physiology of host plants during drought stress.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the mitigation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in a multi-metal contaminated soil and their accumulation in rice plants (Oryza sativa L., cv II You 93) using a combined amendment (CMF, calcium carbonate + metakaolin + fused calcium–magnesium phosphate fertilizer). The results showed that application of CMF was effective in reducing the acid-extractable concentrations of soil Pb and Cd. The exchangeable concentrations of soil As showed an initial decrease followed by a gradual increase. The application of 0.2% CMF notably reduced the concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As in brown rice by 46.5%, 43.6%, and 32.0%, respectively. The concentration of As in brown rice was 0.179 mg kg?1 at 0.2% CMF, which met the maximum levels of contaminants in foods of China (MLs) (the ML of Pb, Cd, and As is 0.2 mg kg?1 according to the China national standard GB 2762-2012). At 1.6% CMF, the concentrations of Pb and Cd in brown rice were 0.002 and 0.185 mg kg?1, respectively, i.e., reductions of 99.6% and 74.1%, and these values also fell within the MLs.  相似文献

Titanium (Ti) is a beneficial element that promotes growth and biomass production although the mechanism by which this improvement takes place is still unclear, as are other effects on plants, although it is believed that Ti can compensate for N deficiency. To prove this hypothesis, a hydroponic experiment was designed to investigate the effect of adding Ti to a nutrient solution on the nutrient uptake of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) by withholding N within the nutrient solution (NS) by 25?% (NS2) and by 50?% (NS1). Ti was added at 1 and 2?mg?L?1. When Ti was added to nutrient solution, the elemental concentration in tomato changed significantly: K, Ca, Fe, and Zn decreased while Ti increased. As the concentration of N in nutrient solution decreased, the Ca and Ti concentration of tomato leaves decreased and the K, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn concentration increased. As the N concentration in nutrient solution increased, the Ca concentration decreased although the application of Ti compensated for Ca concentration in NS1. All the photosynthetic attributes and physiological characteristics, including flower induction, decreased when the N concentration of NS decreased by 50?%, although this decrease could be compensated by applying 1?mg?L?1 Ti. This has valuable and practical applications and implications for tomato hydroponic culture.  相似文献

The growth and culturability of Campylobacter jejuni NCTC 11351 and other campylobacters were examined in media having different osmolalities at a range of temperatures (4, 25, and 42°C). The medium osmolalities used ranged from the osmolality of full-strength nutrient medium (modified campylobacter broth having an osmolality of around 254 mosmol) down to 96 mosmol. The following two methods were used to produce media having different osmolalities: dilution of the nutrient medium with distilled water and reformulation of the medium such that the concentrations of various osmolytes were altered while the nutrient content of the medium was unchanged. The results obtained with the two experimental methods were similar, indicating that there was an osmotic threshold effect, such that none of the campylobacters examined (C. jejuni NCTC 11351 and ATCC 33291, Campylobacter lari, and Campylobacter coli) grew in media having osmolalities around 130 mosmol and at temperatures below at 42°C. Conversely, growth occurred in media having osmolalities of around 175 mosmol and above. Osmolar concentrations can be expressed in terms of osmolarity or osmolality. Osmolality is easier to evaluate, is the more commonly used term, and was used in the current study. In nutrient media having low osmolalities (i.e., 130 mosmol and below), the number of CFUs per milliliter declined rapidly regardless of the temperature, and no cells were recovered after 24 h. However, at nongrowth temperatures (25 and 4°C) in higher-osmolality media (175 mosmol and above) a significant population was recovered throughout the experiment (up to 96 h). In low-osmolality nutrient media, the cellular morphology was principally coccoid, while in the early stages of growth in full-strength media the morphology was predominantly rodlike. We propose that the formation of coccoid cells in these experiments was the result of osmotic stress in low-osmolality media. This osmotic effect was apparent regardless of the osmolyte used to reformulate the medium (NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4, NH4Cl, and glucose were used).  相似文献
