Darwin first hypothesized that bright colors and elaborate ornamentation of male animals evolved in response to the "aesthetic" mate preferences of females. By this reasoning, potentially costly male secondary sexual traits may evolve not in response to selection for demonstration of vigor but, rather, in response to latent, nonfunctional preferences by females. Recent comparative evidence for this phenomenon is equivocal. Here we present experimental evidence that two avian species from a lineage devoid of crested species have mate preferences for opposite sex conspecifics wearing artificial white crests. Other colors of crests that have been studied are not preferred. Preferences for white crests did not diminish over the longest experimental interval (12 wk). These results are additional powerful evidence for highly structured aesthetic mate preferences in estrildine finches. Sex differences in the expression of preferences, and the widespread occurrence of facial ornamentation in birds, suggest that the preference "structure" is influenced by the central nervous system. We hypothesize that aesthetic preferences are a potent force in the early evolution of sexually selected traits, and that "indicator" traits evolve secondarily from traits initially favored by aesthetic preferences. 相似文献

Individuals tend to choose mates who are sufficiently genetically dissimilar to avoid inbreeding. As facial attractiveness is a key factor in human mate preference, we investigated whether facial preferences were related to genetic dissimilarity. We asked female volunteers to rate the attractiveness of men from photographs and compared these results with individual genotypes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). In contrast to previously reported preferences based on odour, we found a non-significant tendency for women to rate MHC-similar faces as more attractive, suggesting a preference for cues to a self-similar MHC in faces. Further analysis revealed that male faces received higher attractiveness scores when rated by women who were MHC-similar than by MHC-dissimilar women. Although unexpected, this MHC-similar facial preference is consistent with other studies documenting assortative preferences in humans, including for facial phenotype. 相似文献

Recent studies of taste receptors in Drosophila show remarkable parallels with the mammalian gustatory system, although the pathways are anatomically distinct. These parallels may reflect crucial constraints in the design of taste detection systems. 相似文献

Amiloride reduces several responses of the taste system to NaCl.These effects are crucial support for the ion transport theoryof salt taste. Here, three experiments tested for the inhibitoryeffect of amiloride on salt taste in normal, whole-mouth tastingin humans. There was no evidence that amiloride reduces thesaltiness of NaCl when used as a pretreatment, mixed into solutionwith NaCl, or both. In a fourth experiment, pretreating thetongue with amiloride-soaked filter paper and presenting NaClon filter paper within the treated area also had no effect onsaltiness. In addition, amiloride, a bitter compound, did notsuppress the taste of sucrose, and caffeine did not enhancethe taste of NaCl. These results suggest the ion transport theoryof NaCl taste needs to be modified or extended to account fornormal whole-mouth tasting of NaCl in humans. 1 Present address: 1605 Harbor Court Tower, 10 East Lee St.,Baltimore, MD 21202, USA 相似文献

Fragrances have been used since at least 5000 years ago andall traditional scents are found in modern perfumes. Althoughperfumes are obviously involved in sexual communication, thesignificance of great individual differences in preferencefor fragrances is an evolutionary puzzle. The major histocompatibilitycomplex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic and conserved set of
genes that plays an important role in immune function in vertebrates. Both mice and humans have been shown to prefer the body odorof potential partners that have a dissimilar MHC genotype, which would result in heterozygous offspring. We tested whetherindividual preferences for perfume ingredients correlate witha person's MHC genotype. The human MHC is called HLA (human
leukocyte antigen). A total of 137 male and female studentswho had been typed for their MHC (HLA-A, -B, -DR) scored 36scents in a first test for use on self ("Would you like tosmell like that yourself?") and a subset of 18 scents 2 yearslater either for use on self or for a potential partner ("Wouldyou like your partner to smell like that?"). An overall analysisshowed a significant correlation between the MHC and the scoringsof the scents "for self" in both tests. In a detailed analysiswe found a significant interaction of the two most common HLAswith the rating of the 36 scents in the first study as wellas with the 18 scents in the second study when evaluated forself. This result suggests that persons who share, for example,HLA-A2, have a similar preference for any of the perfume ingredients. The significant repeatability of these preferences in the two
tests showed that the volunteers that had either HLA-A1 or HLA-A2were significantly consistent in their preferences for theperfume ingredients offered. Hardly any significant correlationbetween MHC genotype and ratings of the scents "for partner"were found. This agrees with the hypothesis that perfumes areselected "for self" to amplify in some way body odors thatreveal a person's immunogenetics. 相似文献

The functional role that invasive species occupy within their new range is of significant interest for those concerned about invasive species management. Of particular importance is the distribution mechanisms of invasive plants. Viburnum dilatatum and Viburnum sieboldii are considered invasive species in New Jersey forest understories. We have observed that while the fruit of both species ripens at the same time, there is a difference in how long fruit persists. To better understand the temporal pattern, we examine fruit phenology and consumption, as well as energy density, percentage crude fat, and antioxidant capacity. We hypothesized that the difference in the timing of fruit consumption in these species is largely driven by nutritional content and that fruit with higher energy and fat content are eaten during migration. Our results indicate that V. sieboldii fruit is depleted in the fall, while V. dilatatum fruit persists into winter. In addition, we found that V. sieboldii fruit had higher energy density and 4.4 times as much crude fat compared to that of V. dilatatum fruit. However, V. dilatatum fruit had 9.5 times greater antioxidant capacity than V. sieboldii fruit. We also found that V. sieboldii fruit is mainly consumed by gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) during the fall migration and the primary avian consumer of V. dilatatum fruit are American robins (Turdus migratorius) in the winter when birds are more sedentary. We suspect a mutualistic relationship has developed between these two invasive viburnum species and native avian frugivores. What remains to be seen is what effect different fruiting strategies have on seed dispersal. 相似文献

A new specific ageusia was found in human subjects for monosodium L-glutamate (MSG). Four tests were successively applied to discriminate non-tasters and hypotasters from tasters. (i) NaCl and MSG thresholds, and (ii) suprathreshold sensitivity were evaluated using the up-and-down procedure. Only 73% of 109 subjects common to both tests demonstrated a sensitivity for MSG significantly higher than their sensitivity to NaCl, and hence a specific sensitivity to L-glutamate. The remaining 27% who showed no significant difference in sensitivity to MSG and NaCl solutions were considered as putative hypotasters. (iii) Perception profiles (time-intensity) for MSG and NaCl were tested in 58 subjects and appeared significantly different in 47 tasters (81%). This technique helped in identifying among putative hypotasters of tests 1 and 2 a few tasters who perceived equal intensity for isoconcentration of NaCl and MSG but who could discriminate isomolar solutions on other cues. Thus, 19% of subjects, for whom no significant differences were found between MSG and NaCl time-intensity profiles, remained in the hypotaster group. (iv) A discrimination task including 24 triangular presentations per subject of NaCl and MSG 29 mM applied to the eight most severe hypotasters showed that two subjects at least (two of 58; 3.5%) could not discriminate between both stimuli. Moreover, these subjects probably perceived identical sensations for MSG and NaCl solutions. The six other hypotasters (10.3%) could discriminate both stimuli at the limit of significance. None of these eight subjects were able to identify the typical umami taste in 29 mM MSG. 相似文献

This series of experiments was performed in order to evaluatethe physiological characteristics and patterns of after-tasteof various taste substances. The durations of after-taste followingmonosodium glutamate (MSG), inosine-5'-monophosphate (IMP) andguanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) (umami substances) were longerthan those for sucrose, NaCl, tartaric acid and quinine-HCIat concentrations corresponding to the recognition threshold. The periods of after-taste of solutions of MSG and IMP, andMSG and GMP, were longer than those for the single componentsolutions. Most subjects recognized sucrose as sweet, NaCl assalty, tartaric acid as sour and quinine-HCI as bitter, bothin terms of immediate taste and after-taste. According to thepatterns of after-taste for umami substances, the subjects weredivided into three groups. In group A, umami (appealing, savorytaste in Japanese cuisine) was the main quality of the after-tastesensation; in group B, an indefinite, equivocal taste was thecharacteristic quality of the aftertaste; and no differencewas reported in group C between the immediate taste and after-taste.These results suggest that the characteristics of after-tastefor MSG, IMP and GMP are different from those of the four basictastes. 相似文献

Objectives: This investigation aimed to demonstrate age‐related changes of taste buds on the human epiglottis using histomorphometrical analysis. Methods: Histological observation and measurement of taste bud density were performed on oral and laryngeal surfaces of 237 human epiglottises (138 male and 99 females). The cases were divided into two age groups: 67 cases in the younger group, for subjects aged 10–39 years and 170 cases in the older group, for those aged 70–98 years. Each epiglottis was investigated at the upper and middle height levels. Results: The mean density of taste buds significantly decreased on the laryngeal surfaces in the older group. Most taste buds were present in the upper height level on the laryngeal surfaces which were covered with thin and flat stratified squamous epithelium. The covering epithelium revealed developed epithelial ridges on the oral surfaces without taste buds. These results suggest a relationship between the existence of taste buds and the thickness of the covering epithelium. Conclusions: The presence of taste buds in the epiglottises of elderly people was demonstrated. In addition, the decrease of these taste buds with advancing age was clarified. 相似文献

Previous studies demonstrating mate choice copying effects among females in non-human species have led many researchers to propose that social transmission of mate preferences may influence sexual selection for male traits. Although it has been suggested that social transmission may also influence mate preferences in humans, there is little empirical support for such effects. Here, we show that observing other women with smiling (i.e. positive) expressions looking at male faces increased women's preferences for those men to a greater extent than did observing women with neutral (i.e. relatively negative) expressions looking at male faces. By contrast, the reverse was true for male participants (i.e. observing women with neutral expressions looking at male faces increased male participant's preferences for those men to a greater extent than did observing women smiling at male faces). This latter finding suggests that within-sex competition promotes negative attitudes among men towards other men who are the target of positive social interest from women. Our findings demonstrate that social transmission of face preferences influences judgments of men's attractiveness, potentially demonstrating a mechanism for social transmission of mate preferences. 相似文献

Previous studies in animals and humans show that genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence individual odours and that females often prefer odour of MHC-dissimilar males, perhaps to increase offspring heterozygosity or reduce inbreeding. Women using oral hormonal contraceptives have been reported to have the opposite preference, raising the possibility that oral contraceptives alter female preference towards MHC similarity, with possible fertility costs. Here we test directly whether contraceptive pill use alters odour preferences using a longitudinal design in which women were tested before and after initiating pill use; a control group of non-users were tested with a comparable interval between test sessions. In contrast to some previous studies, there was no significant difference in ratings between odours of MHC-dissimilar and MHC-similar men among women during the follicular cycle phase. However, single women preferred odours of MHC-similar men, while women in relationships preferred odours of MHC-dissimilar men, a result consistent with studies in other species, suggesting that paired females may seek to improve offspring quality through extra-pair partnerships. Across tests, we found a significant preference shift towards MHC similarity associated with pill use, which was not evident in the control group. If odour plays a role in human mate choice, our results suggest that contraceptive pill use could disrupt disassortative mate preferences. 相似文献

Non-human animals can acquire novel route preferences by following knowledgeable individuals. Such socially learned route preferences can be stably maintained over multiple transmission episodes, sometimes forming long-lived traditions. In humans, preferences for familiar routes or heavily used worn trails over unfamiliar ones have been described in various contexts. However, social learning of route preferences has not been experimentally demonstrated in humans. Here, we demonstrate that social learning and tradition influence route choice. We led adult male and female participants into a room by one of two routes. Participants followed the demonstrated route choices, and later remembered and preferred this choice even when determinably suboptimal (i.e. longer and not preferred by control participants) or when the choice was indicated as arbitrary (the demonstrator took one route to retrieve a poster that had ostensibly fallen). Moreover, route preferences were stably maintained over multiple transmission episodes. We suggest that simple social learning processes, often neglected in human and primate research, can result in long-lived route preferences that may influence a range of additional behaviour patterns. 相似文献

Fruit thinning is commonly practiced in many fruit bearing woodyperennials to improve fruit quality and to prevent biennial bearing, thesevere alternation of fruit load in successive on and off years. Biennialbearing has its origin in the negative effect of the presence of fruits onflower production (return bloom), and, thus, the yield for next year. Forreasons of labour cost, fruit thinning is usually done by using chemicalcompounds such as ethephon and ammonium thiosulphate at the blossomingstage, and for fruit thinning NAA, NAAm, carbaryl, and a few cytokinins.Apart from indirect effects of the various chemicals on return bloom viareduction of fruit load, they may also influence flower formation directly. In view of the supposedly negative relationship between flowering andshoot growth, chemical thinners may even affect bloom via interference withthe vegetative development of the tree. In the present paper, in additionto a short discussion of the essentials of the flower-formation process inpome fruits, the effect of a number of chemical thinners on flower formationis reviewed. It is argued that in most experimental studies the data on theeffect of thinning on return bloom is insufficiently detailed, and a betterunderstanding especially of the early phases of the flower-formationprocess is badly needed. 相似文献

Relationships between taste stimuli and heart rate were evaluated in 29 healthy university students. The test solutions were sucrose, NaCl, citric acid, quinine-HCl and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Heart rate increased by 7.1-13.6% for all the taste stimuli after use as compared with pre-stimuli values. The maximum increases in heart rate came approximately 25 s after the taste stimuli. After the increases, heart rate returned to pre-stimuli levels after between 80 and 100 s. Heart rate reached its maximum with citric acid. Recovery from the heart-rate increase was more delayed for quinine-HCl and MSG than for the other stimuli. Except for sucrose, increases in heart rate and the hedonic scale values of the taste solutions showed significant negative correlation. These findings show that the taste stimuli solutions increased the heart rate and that the increase differed with the concentration and taste solution used. 相似文献

Mate preferences may operate in part to mitigate the threats posed by infectious disease. In this paper, we outline various ways in which preferring healthy mates can offer direct benefits in terms of pathogen avoidance and indirect benefits in terms of heritable immunity to offspring, as well as the costs that may constrain mate preferences for health. We then pay special attention to empirical work on mate preferences in humans given the depth and breadth of research on human mating. We review this literature and comment on the degree to which human mate preferences may reflect preferences for health. 相似文献

It has been argued that social learning helps animals either avoid noxious substances or identify food items, but evidence suggests that avian social learning is fundamentally different from that of mammals. In two experiments, we investigated whether the preferences of domestic hens, Gallus g. domesticus, for novel food were influenced by observing the feeding behaviour of conspecifics. In experiment 1, we attempted to confirm that birds can develop socially learnt aversions to unpalatable foods. Despite demonstrators showing a highly visible ‘disgust reaction’ after eating unpalatable coloured food, observers did not develop aversions to similarly coloured food. In experiment 2, we aimed to determine whether preferences for palatable food were socially learnt, and whether the extent of a demonstrator's preference for novel food affected the magnitude of the observer's socially learned preference. Demonstrators ate coloured food of standard or high palatability, or did not peck food at all. When the demonstrators pecked more frequently or fed more quickly from the food, the observers consumed a greater proportion of food of the same colour; however, this was only when the food was red, not green. We argue this indicates an unlearned aversion to red food, overcome by social learning of the food being highly palatable. The results provide no evidence that adult hens learn aversions through observing disgust reactions, but show that hens are sensitive to the extent of demonstrator preferences for palatable food. The data do not support the hypothesis that avian social learning is fundamentally different from that of mammals. Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.
