Chonocephalus blackithorum sp. nov . is described from Sulawesi. Biological observations on it and five other species are reported. In describing the female it proved necessary to re-evaluate the morphology of the female abdomen both in Chonocephalus and in the Phoridae as a whole. This adds to the growing evidence that the ground-plan of the Phoridae, and hence the Cyclorrhapha, is plesiomorphic with respect to the Empidoidea. The supposed affinity between these two groups is called into question and it is suggested that the Cyclorrhapha could even be an independent lineage from the Nematocera. The case for continuing to regard the Brachycera as monophyletic is also called into question by casting doubt on the rotation of the larval mandibles as a synapomorphy. 相似文献

Enigmilkhia dimorphka gen. et sp. nov. and Milkhia distinctipennis, fumicoslata, savannaticola and sylvicola spp. nov. are described from tropical Africa. 14 species of fleas were recorded from 173 nests of 47 species of birds. Most abundant of them are Ceratophyllus vagabundus, C. gallinae, C. borealis. The abundance of fleas was found to depend on season and hosts' habitat. The above species were most frequently encountered in nests in May. The high abundance index of fleas was registered in birds nesting in hollows, burrows of small mammals and in clefts of rocks. 相似文献

Summary The predation rate of artificial bird nests was measured in disturbed chaparral habitat fragments and at an unfragmented site in coastal San Diego County, California USA. Local extinctions of chaparral birds has been previously shown to occur in these fragments. The predation rate was highest at the unfragmented site. Among fragments, predation was higher at moderately disturbed than at highly disturbed sites. These results suggest that nest predator species diversity or density is reduced in disturbed chaparral fragments. Nest predation is probably not the most important cause of the observed loss of chaparral breeding bird diversity in these fragments. 相似文献

Predators are often expected to vary their relative predation rates according to the frequency of prey types in the environment (frequency-dependent predation). The underlying cause for this must lie in some dependency of absolute predation rates on the density of prey types in the environment (density-dependent predation). However, frequency-dependent predation may either be caused by 'simple' density-dependent predation, in which the absolute predation rate on a given prey type depends purely on the density of that type, or by more complex responses in which absolute rates depend also on the density of other prey types. It is usually difficult to distinguish the underlying cause of frequency-dependent predation, because frequencies tend to change as densities change. Here, we describe the results of an experiment conducted to disentangle these phenomena under two prey richness (low and high) conditions. We used artificial bird nests (placed on shrubs and on saplings) baited with quail eggs placed in natural forests as models of natural bird nests. Our results indicate that both the absolute and relative predation rates on the prey types may vary in complex ways. Predation rates depend on a complex interaction between the prey's own density, other prey density and the diversity of prey in the environment. Neglecting to include, or consider, these complexities into analyses may lead to erroneous conclusions in studies of absolute or relative predation rates. 相似文献

In artificial fluid, the spermatozoa move as linear cells or round up and rotate, propelled by spontaneous bending of their tails. Both linear and rounded cells can move forward and backward, but usually they move forward. The tails of all cells display, simultaneously, small primary bends and fewer, much larger secondary bends. Rounded cells form single secondary bends that remain unchanged as the cells rotate. They also form “node-like” primary bends that travel posteriorly or anteriorly as the cells rotate forward or backward, respectively. Linear cells move their anterior regions into and out of focus in a cyclic fashion. They form rather prominent primary bends, as well as two to four secondary bends that travel posteriorly as the cells move forward. Secondary bends change in shape continuously and are not sinusoidal. The cells follow approximately linear trajectories, but the distances traveled per cycle, speeds, and secondary bending patterns are variable. When methyl cellulose is added to artificial fluid, linear movement is improved, and forward speeds are approximately tripled. The movement of spermatozoa in natural fluid of the female reproductive tract is remarkably less stereotyped than that of cells in artificial fluid. The cells, usually resembling straight lines or arcs, are very flexible and active. They lack obvious cyclic activity and double bending patterns. They are capable of moving both forward and backward and of adjusting their bending activity and speed within rather wide limits. Bats (Microchiroptera) utilize few types of bird nests as roosts. Ten species of bats (Molossidae and Vespertilionidae) were recorded roosting in the enclosed bottle-shaped mud nests of the Fairy Martin Hirundo ariel; two species (Vespertilionidae) were located in the hanging nests of scrubwrens Sericornis spp. and the Brown Gerygone Gerygone mouki; two species (Vespertilionidae) in the enclosed plant material nests of the Grey-crowned Babbler Pomatostomus temporalis and Fernwren Oreoscopus gutturalis; and one species (Emballonuridae) was recorded in the open cup-shaped nest of the White-rumped Swiftlet Collocalia spodiopygius. No information was available on the importance of bird nests as breeding sites and only one species, the Chocolate Wattled Bat Chalinolobus morio, has been recorded hibernating in a nest. Bird nests in Australia provide roosting habitat for four threatened bats and may be important to the conservation of these species. 相似文献

When viewed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the spermatozoon of the phorid dipteran Megaselia scalaris appears threadlike, lacking distinct head and tail areas. These areas can be observed, however, in appropriately stained material. Measurements of Feulgen-stained material reveal average lengths of the head, tail, and total cell of 18.7, 128.7, and 147.4 μm, respectively. When tested for sulfhydryl and disulfide groups, the head displays only disulfide groups. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals 12 different regions: three (1–3) in the head, four (9–12) in the tail, and five (4–8) in a short zone of overlap between the head and tail. Most of the cell lies in regions 9 and 11 of the tail and 3 of the head, accounting for, respectively, 37.3%, 45.7%, and 11.2% of the total length. A tubelike acrosome indents the anterior end of the nucleus. The tail originates asymmetrically in relation to the long axis of the cell as a peglike structure associated with the dorsolateral region of the nucleus. No centriole is visible, and the nucleus has a notched appearance in longitudinal sections. Two mitochondrial derivatives and an axoneme displaying a 9+9+2 microtubule configuration and ATPase activity extend throughout most of the tail. In regions 9 and 10, an asymmetrically arranged accessory body is also present. Features having possible taxonomic utility include the asymmetrically arranged accessory body, the size and shape of the acrosome, and the notched appearance of the nucleus. The present report is apparently the first to describe the spermatozoon of a cyclorrhaphous dipteran which is not a member of the Schizophora. 相似文献

The result of a phylogenetic analysis of the Sepsidae based on larval characters is presented. It is shown that cyclorrhaphan larvae can be as rich a source of characters as Nematocera immatures when investigated using an SEM. The cladistic analysis comprised fifty-two species in sixteen genera of the Sepsidae and five outgroup species and used fifty-seven morphological characters. It found seven parsimonious trees which only differed with respect to the arrangement of some species within the genus Themira. The basal dichotomies of the phylogenetic trees are particularly well supported, indicating the conservative nature of larval characters. Orygma is confirmed as the sister group of all the remaining sepsids, the Sepsinae. There is good larval evidence that Ortalischema is the sister group of all remaining Sepsinae and that the Toxopodinae constitute an early radiation within the Sepsidae. According to larval data, some genera are paraphyletic ( Themira, Palaeosepsis ), but adult characters appear to contradict these findings. Among the traditionally recognized higher taxa within the Sepsidae, Hennig's Themira species-group and Steysbal's Sepsini have to be rejected as polyphyletic. However, Hennig's Sepsis species-group is confirmed as monophyletic and will probably constitute one major element of a future phylogenetic system of the Sepsidae. States of the strongly modified fore-legs of some adult sepsid males are mapped onto the phylogenetic tree, largely confirming Šulc's ideas about the evolution of these features. The origin and evolution of male sternites with brushes and a gland on the tibiae of the males ('osmeterium') are discussed. Whereas adult characters point to a sister-group relationship between the Sepsidae and the Ropalomeridae, larval characters appear to indicate a sister-group relationship between the Coelopidae and the Sepsidae. Several studies on the potential use of drosophilid assemblages as bioindicator systems have been carried out in the last years. Nevertheless, the successful application of these organisms in these systems requires adequate filling of several knowledge gaps. In this sense, little is known about drosophilid assemblages in wetlands and flooded areas. The present study provides the first survey of drosophilid species inhabiting such environments in the extreme South of Brazil and compares general beta-diversity patterns between assemblages of flooded versus nonflooded areas. The specimens were collected with banana-baited traps, and the assemblages recovered in eight wetlands of the southernmost coast of Brazil were compared to those recovered from seven nonflooded areas of the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. A total of 5028 and 2571 individuals encompassing 27 and 37 species were collected in the flooded and nonflooded areas, respectively. The differential species composition patterns presented between these areas was statistically supported, which seems to be related to the lower beta-diversity presented by swamps, especially in regard to dominance patterns. So, the open and climatically harsher environment provided by wetlands possibly constitutes a hostile environment for the entry and, mainly, for the persistence of several native Drosophilidae species, in contrast to some exotic and more plastic species (as Drosophila simulans and Zaprionus indianus). Since the diversity gradient of flooded areas does not seem to be related to the conservation status of the swamp, our results question the use of Drosophilidae species as bioindicators of environmental disturbance and antropic influence in wetlands. 相似文献

The immature stages of the craneflies Lipsothrix nigrilinea and L. fenderi are spent in galleries within decayed red alder ( Atntts rtibra ), in low order streams of the Pacific Northwest. L. fenderi also occurs in some coniferous wood and wood in semi-terrestrial sites at stream margins. Larvae of both species feed on the wood and are important degraders of this material.
2. The immature stages are briefly described and behaviour of the two species is compared.
3. L. nigrilinea has a predominantly biennial life cycle. It emerges from April to August in response to receding water level. The absence of this cue results in an extension of the life span to 3 or more years. The non-deterministic life cycle results in high variability of juvenile and adult weights.

Six species of winter gnats are recorded for the first time in the fauna of Russia: Trichocera (Trichocera) inexplorata (Dahl, 1967), T. (Saltrichocera) antennata Starý, 1999, T. (S.) calva Starý, 1999, T. (S.) dahlae Mendl, 1971, T. (S.) recondita Starý, 2000, and T. (S.) sparsa Starý et Martinovský, 1996. Traits that converge in appearance under similar environmental conditions among phylogenetically independent lineages are thought to represent adaptations to local environments. We tested for convergence in nest morphology and composition of birds breeding in two ecologically different locations in Canada: Churchill in northern Manitoba and Elgin in southeastern Ontario. We examined nests from four families of passerine birds (Turdidae: Turdus, Parulidae: Dendroica, Emberizidae: Passerculus and Fringillidae: Carduelis) where closely related populations or species breed in both locations. Nests of American Robins, Yellow Warblers, and Carduelis finches had heavier nest masses, and tended to have thicker nest-walls, in northern Manitoba compared with conspecifics or congenerics breeding in southeastern Ontario. Together, all species showed evidence for wider internal and external nest-cup diameters in northern Manitoba, while individual species showed varying patterns for internal nest-cup and external nest depths. American Robins, Yellow Warblers, and Carduelis finches in northern Manitoba achieved heavier nest masses in different ways. American Robins increased all materials in similar proportions, and Yellow Warblers and Common Redpolls used greater amounts of select materials. While changes in nest composition vary uniquely for each species, the pattern of larger nests in northern Manitoba compared to southeastern Ontario in three of our four phylogenetically-independent comparisons suggests that birds are adapting to similar selective pressures between locations. 相似文献
