Three pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) genotypes- GT-1, AKP-1 and PRG-158 with varying crop duration, growth habit and flowering pattern were evaluated for variability in their response for drought stress. Drought stress was imposed at initiation of flowering and the observations on biomass and seed yield parameters were recorded at harvest. The magnitude of response of individual component to drought stress was found to be genotype specific. Drought stress significantly decreased photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (Tr) and relative water content (RWC) in all the genotypes, however the magnitude of reduction differed with genotype. With drought stress, the reduction of PN was highest in GT-1 while reduction in Tr was highest in PRG-158. The genotype AKP-1, accumulated significantly higher concentrations of osmotic solutes especially proline under water deficit stress, this facilitated it to maintain higher relative water content (RWC) and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content as compared to other genotypes. Drought stress also impacted biomass production and their partitioning to vegetative and reproductive components at harvest. There was significant variability between the genotypes for seed yield under drought stress while it was non-significant under well-watered condition. Drought stress enhanced flower drop and decreased flower to pod conversion resulting in reduced pod number and seed number in PRG-158 and GT-1. The genotype AKP-1 recorded superior performance for seed yield under stress environment due to its ability in maintaining pod and seed number as well as improved test weight (100 seed weight). Under drought stress, significant positive association of seed yield with proline, seed number, pod number and test weight clearly indicating their role in drought tolerance.  相似文献

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to quantify the effect of varied water regimes on root length, partitioning of dry matter and plant growth regulators by using sunflower genotypes differing in maturity and drought tolerance. Significant depressing effect of drought stress was evident on traits (i.e., reproductive dry matter, leaf area index and cytokinin concentrations in leaves). However, root/shoot, reproductive/vegetative ratios and Abscisic acid (ABA) concentration were found to increase under drought stress. Drought stress also changed the dry matter accumulation pattern of genotypes. In most cases it reduced the days to reach the maximum peak showing early senescence.

ABA was identified as a multi-functional plant growth regulator under drought stress, causing early senescence of plants and translocation of assimilates to the roots and reproductive part while root growth under drought stress was explained by the indole-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations. Maintaining higher cytokinin contents were involved in accumulation of higher reproductive dry matter under drought stress. Although ABA and IAA were both involved in the development of defense responses during the adaptation and survival to drought stress but higher productivity under drought stress was only realized through maintaining higher cytokinin contents.  相似文献

Soybean is an important legume food crop, and its seeds are rich in nutrients, providing humans and animals with edible oil and protein feed. However, soybean is sensitive to water requirements, and drought is an important factor limiting soybean yield and quality. This study used Heinong 84 (drought resistant variety) and Hefeng 46 (intermediate variety) as tested varieties planted in chernozem, albic, and black soils. The effects of drought stress on the activities of key enzymes in carbon metabolism and photosynthetic characteristics of soybean were studied during the flowering stage, most sensitive to water. (1) The activities of SS-1, 6PGDH, and G6PDH enzymes in soybean leaves first increased and then decreased under drought stress. The enzyme activity was the highest under moderate drought stress and weakest in the blank group. (2) Drought stress increased Phi2, PhiNO, and Fm in soybean leaves and reached the highest value under severe drought; with the increase in drought stress, PhiNPQ and Fv/Fm of soybean leaves gradually decreased, reaching the lowest under severe drought. (3) With the increase in drought stress, F0 and Fs of soybean leaves showed a single peak curve, and the maximum was at moderate drought. (4) Correlation analysis showed that F0 was greatly affected by varieties and soil types; Fs, F0, and Fm soil varieties had a great influence, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were affected differently under drought stress with different drought degrees. (5) Drought stress changed the agronomic traits and yield of soybean. With the increase of drought degree, plant height, node number of main stem, effective pod number, 100-seed weight and total yield decreased continuously. (6) Drought stress affected the dry matter accumulation of soybean. With the increase of drought degree, the dry matter accumulation gradually decreased. Among them, the leaf was most seriously affected by drought, and SD decreased by about 55% compared with CK. Under the condition of black soil, the dry matter accumulation of soybean was least affected by drought.  相似文献

Drought is one of the abiotic stresses controlling plant function and ecological stability. In the context of climate change, drought is predicted to occur more frequently in the future. Despite numerous attempts to clarify the overall effects of drought stress on the growth and physiological processes of plants, a comprehensive evaluation on the impacts of drought stress on biomass allocation, especially on reproductive tissues, remains elusive. We conducted a meta‐analysis by synthesizing 164 published studies to elucidate patterns of plant biomass allocation in relation to drought stress. Results showed that drought significantly increased the fraction of root mass but decreased that of stem, leaf, and reproductive mass. Roots of herbaceous plants were more sensitive to drought than woody plants that reduced reproductive allocation more sharply than the former. Relative to herbaceous plants, drought had a more negative impact on leaf mass fraction of woody plants. Among the herbaceous plants, roots of annuals responded to drought stress more strongly than perennial herbs, but their reproductive allocation was less sensitive to drought than the perennial herbs. In addition, cultivated and wild plants seemed to respond to drought stress in a similar way. Drought stress did not change the scaling exponents of the allometric relationship between different plant tissues. These findings suggest that the allometric partitioning theory, rather than the optimal partitioning theory, better explains the drought‐induced changes in biomass allocation strategies.  相似文献

Longan species (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) exhibit a high agronomic potential in many subtropical regions worldwide; however, little is known about its responses to abiotic stress conditions. Drought and salinity are the most environmental factors inducing negative effects on plant growth and development. In order to elucidate the responses of longan to drought and salinity, seedlings were grown under conditions of drought and salt stresses. Drought was imposed by suspending water supply leading to progressive soil dehydration, and salinity was induced using two concentrations of NaCl, 100 and 150 mM in water solution, for 64 days. Data showed that salt concentrations increased foliar abscisic acid (ABA) and only 150 mM NaCl reduced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and increased proline levels. NaCl treatments also increased Na+ and Cl? content in plant organs proportionally to salt concentration. Drought increased leaf ABA but did not change IAA concentrations, and also increased proline synthesis. In addition, drought and salt stresses reduced the photosynthesis performance; however, only drought decreased leaf growth and relative leaf water content. Overall, data indicate that under severe salt stress, high ABA accumulation was accompanied by a reduction of IAA levels; however, drought strongly increased ABA but did not change IAA concentrations. Moreover, drought and high salinity similarly increased (or maintained) ion levels and proline synthesis. Data also suggest that ABA accumulation may mitigate the impact of salt stress through inducing stomatal closure and delaying water loss, but did not mediate the effects of long-term drought conditions probably because leaves reached a strong dehydration and the role of ABA at this stage was not effective to detain leaf injuries.  相似文献

Brassinolide (BR) is a relatively new plant growth regulator. To test whether BR could be used to increase tolerance to water deficits in soybean, the effects of BR application on photosynthesis, assimilate distribution, antioxidant enzymes and seed yield were studied. BR at 0.1 mg l−1 was foliar applied at the beginning of bloom. Two levels of soil moisture (80% field capacity for well-watered control and 35% for drought-stressed treatment) were applied at pod initiation. BR treatment increased biomass accumulation and seed yield for both treatments. Drought stress inhibited translocation of assimilated 14C from the labeled leaf, but BR increased the translocation for both treatments. Drought stress depressed chlorophyll content and assimilation rate (A), while chlorophyll content and A of BR-treated plants were greater than that of drought-stressed plants. BR treatment increased maximum quantum yield of PS II, the activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, and the leaf water potential of drought-stressed plants. Treatment with BR also increased the concentration of soluble sugars and proline, and the activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase of soybean leaves when drought-stressed. However, it decreased the malondialdehyde concentration and electrical conductivity of leaves under drought stress. This study show that BR can be used as a plant growth regulator to enhance drought tolerance and minimize the yield loss of soybean caused by water deficits.  相似文献

Water deficit is a serious environmental stress and the major constraint to rice productivity. Losses in rice yield due to water shortage probably exceed losses from all other causes combined and the extent of the yield loss depends on both the severity and duration of the water stress. Drought affects rice at morphological, physiological, and molecular levels such as delayed flowering, reduced dry matter accumulation and partitioning, and decreased photosynthetic capacity as a result of stomatal closure, metabolic limitations, and oxidative damage to chloroplasts. Small-statured rice plants with reduced leaf area and short growth duration are better able to tolerate drought stress, although the mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Increased water uptake by developing larger and deeper root systems, and the accumulation of osmolytes and osmoprotectants are other important mechanisms for drought resistance. Drought resistance in rice has been improved by using plant growth regulators and osmoprotectants. In addition, several enzymes have been found that act as antioxidants. Silicon has also improved drought resistance in rice by silicification of the root endodermis and improving water uptake. Seed priming improves germination and crop stand establishment under drought. Rice plants expressing HVA1, LEA proteins, MAP kinase, DREB and endo-1, 3-glucanase are better able to withstand drought stress. Polyamines and several enzymes act as antioxidants and reduce adverse effects of drought stress in rice. Drought resistance can be managed by developing and selecting drought-tolerant genotypes. Rice breeding and screening may be based on growth duration, root system, photosynthesis traits, stomatal frequency, specific leaf weight, leaf water potential, and yield in target environments. This review discusses recent developments in integrated approaches, such as genetics, breeding and resource management to increase rice yield and reduce water demand for rice production.  相似文献

Models for root: shoot, vegetative: generative and stem: leafpartitioning are presented to quantify dry matter partitioningof two contrasting genotypes of Vicia faba, an indeterminateand a ‘topless’. A third plant type, a determinateof which two to three inflorescences had been removed, was alsoincluded but behaved similarly to the intact plant. The root:shoot partitioning model predicts linear relationships betweenroot proportion and the product of air vapour pressure deficitand relative growth rate. Data from field experiments were consistentwith model prediction and coefficients estimated were similarfor both genotypes. Partitioning into pods was modelled as proportionalto the number of actively growing pods younger than 1000°Cd. Coefficients estimated were similar in both genotypes butdifferent between densities and years. In the indeterminategenotype, stem: leaf ratio was allometric throughout, whereasleaf growth ceased but stem growth continued in the determinateafter formation of the terminal inflorescence. Relatively moredry matter was allocated to stems than to leaves in high thanin low densities. In conclusion, the main differences in drymatter partitioning between genotypes concern leaf: stem partitioningduring early pod filling and pod partitioning due to pod numberdifferences. Reaumuria soongorica (Pall.) Maxim., a perennial semi-shrub, is widely found in semi-arid areas in northwestern China and can survive severe desiccation of its vegetative organs. In order to study the protective mechanism of desiccation tolerance in R. soongorica, diurnal patterns of net photosynthetic rate (Pn), water use efficiency (WUE) and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of Photosystem II (PSII), and sugar content in the source leaf and stem were investigated in 6-year-old plants during progressive soil drought imposed by the cessation of watering. The results showed that R. soongorica was characterized by very low leaf water potential, high WUE, photosynthesis and high accumulation of sucrose in the stem and leaf abscission under desiccation. The maximum Pn increased at first and then declined during drought, but intrinsic WUE increased remarkably in the morning with increasing drought stress. The maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and the quantum efficiency of noncyclic electric transport of PSII(ΦPSII) decreased significantly under water stress and exhibited an obvious phenomenon of photoinhibition at noon. Drought stressed plants maintained a higher capacity of dissipation of the excitation energy (measured as NPQ) with the increasing intensity of stress. Conditions of progressive drought promoted sucrose and starch accumulation in the stems but not in the leaves. However, when leaf water potential was less than −21.3 MPa, the plant leaves died and then abscised. But the stem photosynthesis remained and, afterward the plants entered the dormant state. Upon rewatering, the shoots reactivated and the plants developed new leaves. Therefore, R. soongorica has the ability to reduce water loss through leaf abscission and maintain the vigor of the stem cells to survive desiccation.  相似文献

Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting yield of dryland crops. Rhizobacterial populations of stressed soils are adapted and tolerant to stress and can be screened for isolation of efficient stress adaptive/tolerant, plant growth promoting rhizobacterial (PGPR) strains that can be used as inoculants for crops grown in stressed ecosystems. The effect of inoculation of five drought tolerant plant growth promoting Pseudomonas spp. strains namely P. entomophila strain BV-P13, P. stutzeri strain GRFHAP-P14, P. putida strain GAP-P45, P. syringae strain GRFHYTP52, and P. monteilli strain WAPP53 on growth, osmoregulation and antioxidant status of maize seedlings under drought stress conditions was investigated. Drought stress induced by withholding irrigation had drastic effects on growth of maize seedlings. However seed bacterization of maize with Pseudomonas spp. strains improved plant biomass, relative water content, leaf water potential, root adhering soil/root tissue ratio, aggregate stability and mean weight diameter and decreased leaf water loss. The inoculated plants showed higher levels of proline, sugars, free amino acids under drought stress. However protein and starch content was reduced under drought stress conditions. Inoculation decreased electrolyte leakage compared to uninoculated seedlings under drought stress. As compared to uninoculated seedlings, inoculated seedlings showed significantly lower activities of antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) under drought stress, indicating that inoculated seedlings felt less stress as compared to uninoculated seedlings. The strain GAP-P45 was found to be the best in terms of influencing growth and biochemical and physiological status of the seedlings under drought stress. The study reports the potential of rhizobacteria in alleviating drought stress effects in maize.  相似文献

It may be that land-races of sorghum (Sorghum sp.) and millet[Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke] which evolved along geographicalgradients of rainfall in Africa and India, differ in their droughtresistance. Any physiological attributes found to be correlatedwith low rainfall might be important and effective characteristicsfor crop production in dry regions. Twenty land-races were chosen which evolved along geographicalgradients of rainfall, seven millets from India, six sorghumsfrom Mali, and seven sorghums from the Sudan. Races were evaluatedfor their growth potential and plant water relations under hydroponicsconditions in a growth chamber. A water stress treatment wasimposed by adding polyethylene glycol-8000 to the nutrient solution, giving a solute water potential of -0.5 MPa, compared with acontrol solution at 003 MPa. Drought resistance, in terms of relatively less growth inhibitionunder stress, was higher in races from dry regions than in racesfrom humid regions. Of all the physiological variables measured[carbon exchange rate, (CER), transpiration, transpiration ratio(CER/transpiration), leaf diffusive resistance, leaf water potentialand osmotic adjustment], only osmotic adjustment under stresswas generally correlated with average rainfall at each race'sorigin, indicating greater osmotic adjustment in land-racesfrom drier regions. Races with a greater capacity for osmoticadjustment were characterized by smaller plants with high ratesof transpiration and low rates of leaf senescence under stress. The carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area increased as liveleaf area decreased under stress due to leaf senescence. Thus, drought resistant races under stress tended to have lower CERper unit live leaf area (but not per plant) than susceptibleraces. Transpiration ratios under stress were lower in resistantthan in susceptible races, mainly because resistant races hadhigher transpiration. The results for the measured variables showed a general trendfor greater drought resistance in sorghum than in millet, indicatingthat the commonly observed adapation of the millets to dry environmentsmay be due to other factors, such as drought escape or heattolerance. Changes in plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and stem diameter of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] plants under drought stress were studied. Total plant dry mass was reduced by 30 % compared to well-watered control plants. Leaf water potential was slightly decreased by water stress. Water stress induced daytime shrinkage and reduced night-time expansion of stem. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate were significantly declined by water stress, while the intercellular CO2 concentration was changed only slightly at the initiation of stress treatment. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 and apparent photosynthetic electron transport rate were not changed by water stress.  相似文献

The partitioning of14C-assimilates was studied in pigeonpea(Cajanus cajan L.) at vegetative and flowering stages (40 and 70 d after sowing, respectively) exposed to moderate and severe drought induced by withholding the irrigation. At vegetative stage, the ethanol soluble fraction in shoot decreased from 99 to 43.16 % between 0 and 120 h, whereas in underground part it increased from 1% to 56.84 % with maximum amount in nodules (35.51 %). Similar trend was observed in ethanol insoluble fraction. At moderate drought, a significant increase in soluble fraction (11.31 %) in nodules was observed. Stem showed significant reduction of assimilates (13.09 %). After flowering, the assimilates produced in leaves were exported to reproductive parts, especially under drought. In plants recovering from severe drought, 14C in soluble and insoluble fractions in reproductive parts was reduced to 85 % and 43 %, respectively, whereas leaf and nodules showed a significant increase. Thus the assimilate partitioning to different plant parts was dependent on growth stage and affected by drought.  相似文献

Responses of canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings to three ultraviolet (UV)-B levels [0 (zero), 5 (ambient) and 10 (enhanced) kJ m?2 d?1], two watering regimes (well-watered and water-stressed), and two abscisic acid (ABA) levels (with and without application) were investigated. Overall, enhanced UVB and water stress negatively affected plant growth and physiology, but ABA had very little effect. Enhanced UVB decreased stem height, leaf area, plant dry matter, water use efficiency and wax content, but increased concentrations of chlorophyll a, carotenoids and flavonoids, and ethylene evolution. Water stress reduced stem height and diameter, leaf area, plant dry matter, leaf weight ratio and shoot:root weight ratio under zero and ambient UVB. Water stress also reduced chlorophyll a and carotenoids in plants exposed to enhanced UVB. ABA with watering regime had significant interactive effects only on leaf dry matter and wax content. We found that enhanced UVB and water stress adversely affected B. napus seedlings. Interaction between these two factors affected plant performance. In this interaction, ABA had little significant role. Also, optimum vegetative growth and biomass were achieved under ambient UVB.  相似文献

Enhanced ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation and water deficit affect plant growth and development. We determined the effects of UVB and drought stress on growth parameters and chemical attributes of two ecotypes (alpine and prairie) of Stellaria longipes under controlled-environment conditions. Clonal ramets of these ecotypes were grown under three UVB levels (0, 5, and 10 kJ m−2 d−1) and exposed to two watering regimes (well watered and drought stressed) for 21 days. Compared to the alpine, the prairie ecotype was taller, had higher number of nodes, and greater leaf area and specific leaf weight (leaf dry weight: leaf area), which resulted in increased dry matter in this ecotype. Overall, ‘prairie’ was higher in total chlorophyll (Chl), but lower in Chla:b ratio, flavonoids, and ethylene, than ‘alpine’. In both ecotypes, UVB and drought stress reduced growth and dry matter, whereas UVB increased carotenoids and flavonoids. Drought stress decreased ethylene evolution. These characteristics were also determined in plants growing in the field. In the field-growing plants, ‘prairie’ had higher growth and dry matter, but lower Chla:b ratio and flavonoids, than ‘alpine’. The two ecotypes responded differentially to UVB and watering regime, as ‘prairie’ appeared to be more sensitive to UVB and drought stress than ‘alpine’.  相似文献

Drought is a major restrictive factor for declining grain yield in lentil globally. Present investigation was conducted by taking microsperma (HUL-57) and macrosperma (IPL-406) genotypes of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) as information regarding physiological and biochemical basis of differences in drought resistance in macrosperma (bold-seeded) and microsperma (small-seeded) are not well understood. Pot grown plants were exposed to drought stress at specific phenophase viz. mid-vegetative, flower initiation and pod formation stage by withholding irrigation till the plants experienced one cycle of permanent wilting (PWP). Genotypes exhibited substantial differences for most of the measured traits under drought irrespective of the phenophase of stress imposed. Under drought HUL-57 had lower CMI, higher CSI, lower values of Δ13C, maintained higher SLN, accumulated more N and efficiently remobilized accumulated N to developing seeds. Higher chlorophyll content, increased accumulation of osmotically active solutes viz. soluble sugars and proline under drought stress was evident in HUL-57. Drought induced H2O2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation in both genotypes, but increments were of lesser magnitudes in HUL-57. Drought stress of pod formation stage followed by flower initiation stage was most damaging than the stress imposed at mid-vegetative stage in both genotypes. HUL-57 showed a better drought resistance capacity than IPL-406. Drought indices viz. DSI, STI and MP are proposed as criterion to identify and breed lentil genotypes for drought conditions.  相似文献

The effects of water stress and subsequent re-hydration on growth, leaf abscission, photosynthetic activity, leaf water potential and ion content were investigated in papaya seedlings (Carica papaya L.) cv. “Baixinho de Santa Amalia”. Water stress was imposed by suspending irrigation during 34 days. Thereafter, plants were regularly re-watered. Drought arrested plant growth, induced leaf abscission and drastically decreased photosynthetic rate. However, leaf water potential was hardly reduced. Water deficit also induced sodium, potassium and chloride accumulation in leaves and roots, and did not modify nitrogen levels in both organs. Re-hydration stimulated growth, promoted emergence of new leaves, reactivated photosynthetic machinery function and reduced ion content to control levels. The results indicated that the ability of papaya plants to improve drought tolerance is not mediated through the reduction of leaf abscission, the detention of growth or the decrease of net CO2 assimilation. In contrast, the data suggested that under water stress conditions these plants appear to posses a certain capacity to increase ion content, which might contribute to osmotic adjustment.
