Recreational reuse of contaminated lands can be a sustainable and cost-effective approach to address the increasing demand on land availability for community development as well as for ecologically valuable conservation areas. Conservatively, residential exposure defaults are often applied for evaluation of an alternative future land use. A risk-based fit-for-purpose approach is preferred in evaluating contaminated sites for reuse purposes. The consideration of exposure factors relevant to the anticipated land use is an important step in performing these assessments. Data from two time activity databases, the Consolidated Human Activity Database (CHAD) and the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), were analyzed for activities that might occur at recreational sites for two important exposure factors: duration and frequency of site activities. The information in these databases indicated that the majority of “doers” spent a total time less than 4–6 h per day on these activities. Only a very small percentage of the survey populations participated in these recreational activities. Limited information on activity frequency was reported in the two data sets. This analysis supports modification to the duration of activities at recreational reuse sites as compared to residential defaults, and provides a basis for the development of alternate values.  相似文献

Interactions among physiological mechanisms are abundant in biomedical signals, and they may exist to maintain efficient homeostasis. For example, sympathetic and parasympathetic neural activities interact to either elevate or depress the heart rate to maintain homeostasis. There has been considerable effort devoted to developing algorithms that can detect interactions between various physiological mechanisms. However, methods used to detect the presence of interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, to take one example, have had limited success. This may be because interactions in physiological systems are non-linear and non-stationary. The goal of this work was to identify non-linear interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in the form of frequency and amplitude modulations in human heart-rate data (n=6). To this end, wavelet analysis was performed, followed by frequency analysis of the resultant wavelet decomposed signals in several frequency brackets we define as: very low frequency (f<0.04 Hz), low frequency (0.04-0.15 Hz) and high frequency (0.15-0.4 Hz). Our analysis suggests that the high-frequency bracket is modulated by the low-frequency bracket in the heart rate data obtained in both upright and sitting positions. However, there was no evidence of amplitude modulation among these frequencies.  相似文献

This study tested the effect of acute exposure to a commercialair freshener, derived from fragrant botanical extracts, atan average concentration of 3.16 mg/m3 total volatile organiccompounds on the lexical decision performance of 28 naive participants.Participants attended two 18-min sessions on separate days andwere continuously exposed to the fragrance in either the first(F/NF) or second (NF/F) session. Participants were not instructedabout the fragrance. Exposure to the fragrance did not affecthigh-frequency word recognition. However, there was an orderof administration effect for low-frequency word recognitionaccuracy. When the fragrance was administered first before theno-odor control condition, it did not affect accuracy, but whenit was administered second after the control condition, it significantlydecreased low-frequency word recognition accuracy. Reactiontimes to low-frequency words were significantly slower thanthose for high-frequency words, but no effect of either fragranceor order of administration on reaction times was found. Thepresence of fragrance in the second session apparently servedas a distraction that impaired lexical task performance accuracy.The introduction of fragrances into buildings may not necessarilyfacilitate all aspects of work performance as anticipated.  相似文献

Since consistent data on endogenous circadian rhythms of Mongolian gerbils are not available, the main aim of our study was to identify suitable conditions to receive stable and reproducible free-running rhythms of activity under different light intensities. Another objective was to determine the role of social cues as an exogenous zeitgeber in the absence of a light-dark (LD) cycle. We performed two long-term sets of experiments with adult male gerbils kept in climatic chambers under various photoperiods of at least 30 days each. In all cases, the time of lights on in the chambers differed from the daily starting hour of work in the animal house. Always, two animals per chamber were kept separately in cages with a running wheel while their activity was monitored continuously. During the first set, only three of eight animals developed intra- and interindividual variable free-running rhythms. The activity patterns seemed to be influenced by human activities outside, indicating high sensitivity to external factors. Subsequently, we damped the chambers and the room and restricted access to the room. In the following noise-reduced set, all gerbils developed comparable free-running rhythms of activity. We determined the mean of the free-running period tau, the activity-rest relationship alpha/theta and the amount of running wheel activity per day: tau = 23.7h +/- 0.08h under low light (5 lux) and 25.5h +/- 0.19h under high light intensities (450 lux); alpha/theta = 0.53 +/- 0.08 under 5 lux and 0.34 +/- 0.04 under 450 lux. The amount of daily activity was 12 times as high under 5 lux as under 450 lux. There was no indication that the two animals in one chamber socially synchronized each other. In conclusion, the pronounced rhythm changes in accordance with Aschoff's theory support the view that gerbils are mainly nocturnal animals.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the muscle activity of recreational athletes and professional javelin throwers during pull, push, and elevation of upper extremities and during overhead throw. SCOPE: Nine professional javelin throwers and 16 recreational athletes without shoulder problems were studied. Signals were recorded by surface EMG from eight different muscles. The results obtained from the muscles of upper extremities of throwers were compared with those of recreational athletes. CONCLUSION: The different neuromuscular control of professional throwers caused a more profitable muscle activity. Differences during the overhead throw were more significant. The deltoid muscle and rotator cuff of recreational athletes showed stronger activity than those of throwers during pull, push and elevation. The deltoid muscle and the rotator cuff of professional throwers showed stronger activity during overhead throw. Studying the detailed characteristics of muscle activity pattern (differences in length of activity periods, MVC% of muscles and time broadness among peak muscle activities in percent of total time of a movement cycle) may provide a basis for better understanding improved performance and help in planning proper rehabilitation protocol.  相似文献

Environmental factors have strong influence on activity of alpine ungulates. However, the presence and activities of people in high mountains have been growing rapidly and have led to the advent of human-induced factors, which may modify the time budget. In this study, we examined the influence of natural and human-induced factors on the daytime budget of Tatra chamois Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica. On average, chamois spent 46% of their time foraging, 40% resting, 13% moving around and 1% on social behaviour. The amount of time devoted to particular categories of behaviour was influenced by the time of day, herd size, weather conditions and human disturbance. Human disturbance and the time of day had the highest effect on the proportion of foraging in the daytime budget, which increased as the day progressed and at greater distances from the nearest hiking trail. These two factors also increased the amount of time spent resting, which peaked during the afternoon hours and at greater distances from the nearest trail. The time spent moving around decreased with increasing herd size, distance from the nearest trail and as the day progressed. Males devoted less time to foraging and more to resting and moving around than females. The intensity of human-induced factors is particularly important for a population inhabiting a small, isolated area, as is the case with strictly high-mountain species.  相似文献

To analyze signals measured from human blood flow in the time-frequency domain, we used the wavelet transform which gives good time resolution for high-frequency components and good frequency resolution for low-frequency components. Five characteristic frequency peaks, corresponding to five almost periodic rhythmic activities, were found on the time scale of minutes. These oscillations were characterized by time and spatial invariant measures. The potential of this approach in studying the blood-flow dynamics was illustrated by revealing differences between the groups of control subjects and athletes.  相似文献

In search of a method to increase the validity of experimental data and simultaneously counteract the negative consequences of restricted laboratory environments, a pilot study was run with three rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), which were trained and tested with a laboratory-type task in the animal housing facility. The testing apparatus was made available to individual animals 24 hours a day at their living cage and was connected to a computer that controlled the test and the distribution of regular monkey chow as reward. The animals were thus able to work whenever they wanted, for whatever period of time they chose, in their accustomed home environment. Besides furnishing data on the distribution of activity and performance over extended periods of time, the study provided more data than those obtained previously when animals were tested each day for only a limited time in an isolated test chamber. It was also found that the self-initiated manipulatory activity required by the test considerably reduced the number of motor stereotypies. Thus, testing animals within the housing facility was profitable for the investigators and beneficial for the animals.  相似文献

South American subterranean rodents (Ctenomys aff. knighti), commonly known as tuco-tucos, display nocturnal, wheel-running behavior under light-dark (LD) conditions, and free-running periods >24 h in constant darkness (DD). However, several reports in the field suggested that a substantial amount of activity occurs during daylight hours, leading us to question whether circadian entrainment in the laboratory accurately reflects behavior in natural conditions. We compared circadian patterns of locomotor activity in DD of animals previously entrained to full laboratory LD cycles (LD12:12) with those of animals that were trapped directly from the field. In both cases, activity onsets in DD immediately reflected the previous dark onset or sundown. Furthermore, freerunning periods upon release into DD were close to 24 h indicating aftereffects of prior entrainment, similarly in both conditions. No difference was detected in the phase of activity measured with and without access to a running wheel. However, when individuals were observed continuously during daylight hours in a semi-natural enclosure, they emerged above-ground on a daily basis. These day-time activities consisted of foraging and burrow maintenance, suggesting that the designation of this species as nocturnal might be inaccurate in the field. Our study of a solitary subterranean species suggests that the circadian clock is entrained similarly under field and laboratory conditions and that day-time activity expressed only in the field is required for foraging and may not be time-dictated by the circadian pacemaker.  相似文献

Cognitive performance is sensitive to both neural and non-neural changes induced by physical activity and inactivity. This study investigated whether access to physical activity outside a standard laboratory animal cage affected cognitive performance as measured by navigation of a spatial maze. It also examined gene expression in heart tissue for genes associated with cardiovascular function given recent reports of cognitive impairment associated with hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, we measured expression of neural-regulatory genes typically expressed in brain, but also found in cardiac tissue. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 72) were separated into three groups having different access to physical activity: none outside a standard cage, twice-weekly physical activity, and every other day exercise on a running wheel. Compared with a sedentary group, spatial maze performance was enhanced in animals that had access to physical activity, either twice-weekly in a large box or every other day on a running wheel. Both the cardiovascular and neural-related genes expressed in the heart were distinguished by access to physical activity. Several genes that are associated with heart rate, cholesterol biosynthesis, blood pressure, and cell adhesion regulation, including GJA1, FDFT1, EDN1, and CD36, differed in animals based on access to physical activity. Neural-related genes expressed in cardiac tissue associated with neurite outgrowth, neuroplasticity, and neurogenesis including RTN4, HOMER2, ACTB, NCDN, KIF5B, and HMGB2, were expressed differently among the three groups. Significant shifts in ten cardiovascular and neural-related gene expressions in cardiac tissue were associated with physical activity and may have influenced learning and performance on a spatial maze.  相似文献

Albino laboratory rats that were given free access to running wheels while maintained on a 12:12 h L:D schedule were observed to display marked increases in day cycle activity following an unusually intense geomagnetic storm. The activity changes were not immediate but peaked one day to several days after the storm. Two less intense geomagnetic storm conditions during the 51 day observation period were associated with less marked activity increases. Ambient room temperature fluctuations were not significantly correlated with either geomagnetic activity or day cycle activity measures.  相似文献

Electroencephalograms of medial cortex and electromyograms of intercostal muscles (EMG-icm) were simultaneously recorded in the lizard, Gallotia galloti, during two daily time periods (at daytime, DTP: 1200-1600 h; by night, NTP: 0000-0400 h), to investigate whether a relationship exists between the respiratory and cortical electrical activity of reptiles, and, if so, how this relationship changes during the night rest period. Testing was carried out by studying interdependence between cortical electrical and respiratory activities, by means of linear and nonlinear signal analysis techniques. Both physiological activities were evaluated through simultaneous power signals, derived from the power of the low-frequency band of the electroencephalogram (pEEG-LF), and from the power of the EMG-icm (pEMG-icm), respectively. During both DTP and NTP, there was a significant coherence between both signals in the main frequency band of pEMG-icm. During both DTP and NTP, the nonlinear index N measured significant linear asymmetric interdependence between pEEG-LF and pEMG-icm. The N value obtained between pEEG-LF vs. pEMG-icm was greater than the one between pEMG-icm vs. pEEG-LF. This means that the system that generates the pEEG-LF is more complex than the one that generates the pEMG-icm, and suggests that the temporal variability of power in the low-frequency cortical electrical activity is driven by the power of the respiratory activity.  相似文献

Cryptosporidiosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, represents the major public health concern of water utilities in developed nations due to its small size, resistance to disinfection and ability to be shed in large numbers in faeces. In Australia, recreational access is not allowed on direct supply sources, however, in Western Australia, limited recreational access to drinking water catchments has been allowed, although only in the outer catchment. Recreational activities within 2 km of the drinking water body is prohibited. The present study compared the amount, prevalence and species of Cryptosporidium in recreational versus non-recreational water catchments in the south west of Western Australia (WA). Recreational water catchments, which allowed swimming and camping had a higher prevalence of Cryptosporidium and the majority of samples were the human-associated C. hominis. Non-recreational catchments had a lower prevalence and all the samples genotyped were C. parvum. Risk analysis identified increasing population as strongly correlated with an increase in the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in recreational catchments. This suggests that recreational access to drinking water catchments is a serious public health risk and government policy limiting activities to the outer catchment should be supported.  相似文献

One male and one female lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush , were held in a laboratory tank simulating a natural spawning environment. Their behaviour during their reproductive period was videotaped each day for 2 h at dusk. The fish activities were classified into seven types: resting, casual swimming, side-thrusting, chase, chase-nudge, body alignment, shuddering. As the reproductive period progressed the fish became more generally active with a marked increase in interactive behaviours such as pursuit of the female by the male (chasing, chasing-nudging). Around spawning time, shuddering and body alignment activity reached apeak. Each fish was equipped with an internally implanted radiotelemetry package able to detect and transmit continuously over the course of each day signals that reflect production of the electromyograms (EMGs) that accompany fish axial muscle activity (high muscular activity gives low pulse interval times in milliseconds). The lowest EMG pulse intervals corresponded with what, from the video records, appeared to be the time of highest physical activity during the reproductive period–viz. that associated with spawning activity during dusk. Other times during the diel cycles over the reproductive period, except for times of roughly similar duration during early morning (which may also be reflections of spawning) showed considerably lower muscular activity. It is concluded that transmitted EMG records could probably be used as indicators of spawning activity of lake trout in at least some of those places in the field where they cannot normally be located by visual means.  相似文献

The importance and meaning of social and recreational travel for a diverse group of Auckland residents is explored in this article. Study participants identified a range of social and health benefits, including maintaining social connections with family and friends, opportunities to participate in physical activity, and reducing stress. However, many of these trips are by car. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of private car ownership internationally, low-density urban development, and a poor public transport infrastructure. Social and recreational trips make up a sizeable proportion of domestic travel and are contributing to New Zealand’s increasing rate of CO2 emissions. There is an obvious need to address the negative ecological impacts of human activity. Our findings suggest that alongside strategies to reduce CO2 emissions, it also is important to introduce measures to maintain the benefits from social and recreational travel. Suggestions are made for further areas of research.  相似文献

Human recreational activities are often considered as potential threats to biodiversity, by restricting animals' access to resources that otherwise would be exploited. Because access to wildlife areas is one major means of increasing their public value, and hence the pressure to conserve them, it is clearly critical to be able to identify accurately when human presence is a threat to conservation and when it is not. A wide range of methods have been used to assess the impacts of human disturbance on wildlife and these methods are summarized here. The type of method used depends principally on whether the disturbance issue relates to a particular site, a particular group of individuals or whole populations. Within these categories, both comparative and experimental approaches have been used to assess behavioural, distributional, demographic and population responses to human presence. Examples of each approach are given here, together with an assessment of the information each method provides.  相似文献

Daily changes in cognitive performance have been documented, both in time of day/effect paradigm studies and in time‐isolation studies. However, in both types of studies, phenomena such as the “post‐lunch dip” have been found that were difficult to explain in terms of theoretical backgrounds. These phenomena may suggest ultradian rhythms in cognitive performance. A number of studies have also shown ultradian and asymmetric rhythms in activity indices of the brain hemispheres. The aim of this study was to test three hypotheses: the first two assumed that there is a significant ultradian frequency in a component of the endogenous rhythm of processing speed, and the third assumed that the ultradian endogenous rhythms of the processing speed (encoding and recognition) of stimuli addressed to the left brain hemisphere differ in period length from those addressed to right hemisphere. During a 24 h constant‐routine experiment, the memory performance of 30 participants was measured eight times (every 2.5–3 h), starting at 06:30 h. Parallel sets of words and pictures were shown to subjects in a random order in either the left or the right visual field on a computer screen. The participants pressed one of two buttons in response to the picture or word, or when answering a question concerning the meaning of a presented stimulus. Cosinor analysis was applied to individual time series data. Two significant ultradian components were found in a majority of the time series. Dominant periods were analyzed using three factor ANOVA. The results showed an asymmetry between both hemispheres in the frequency of ultradian rhythms in encoding speed.  相似文献

The hunting and gathering lifestyle adopted by human ancestors around 2 Ma required a large increase in aerobic activity. High levels of physical activity altered the shape of the human body, enabling access to new food resources (e.g. animal protein) in a changing environment. Recent experimental work provides strong evidence that both acute bouts of exercise and long-term exercise training increase the size of brain components and improve cognitive performance in humans and other taxa. However, to date, researchers have not explored the possibility that the increases in aerobic capacity and physical activity that occurred during human evolution directly influenced the human brain. Here, we hypothesize that proximate mechanisms linking physical activity and neurobiology in living species may help to explain changes in brain size and cognitive function during human evolution. We review evidence that selection acting on endurance increased baseline neurotrophin and growth factor signalling (compounds responsible for both brain growth and for metabolic regulation during exercise) in some mammals, which in turn led to increased overall brain growth and development. This hypothesis suggests that a significant portion of human neurobiology evolved due to selection acting on features unrelated to cognitive performance.  相似文献

Volunteers and citizen scientists can make an important contribution to bird monitoring and threatened species conservation projects. Members of BirdLife Australia’s Threatened Bird Network (TBN), a programme which encouraged community participation in conservation projects for threatened birds, were surveyed in 2013 to gain an insight into their demographics and volunteering motivation and preferences. In the 2013 survey, a large proportion of survey respondents were aged between 55 and 74 years old and over half were retired, representing a higher proportion of retired participants than found in a similar study of TBN members in 2000. A large proportion (69%) of respondents had volunteered with TBN projects (occasionally or at least once per year), despite being involved with other environmental groups. Respondents that volunteered mostly preferred short‐term (one day) field‐based volunteer activities, with nearly half also preferring to travel 50 km or less to participate in a project. Less than one third of respondents had never volunteered with TBN projects; this was attributed to not enough projects close to home, time restrictions and lack of transport. Preferences of volunteers in the 2013 survey were similar to those undertaken in 2000 for the majority of responses, including the preference for the activity occurring outdoors, the importance of regular feedback from the organiser, the moderate importance placed on seeing target species and the lack of importance for the provision of transport. A higher importance was placed on the following factors in the 2013 survey responses compared to 2000 (potentially influenced by the higher number of retirees): Having activities closer to home, the activity not being too physically demanding, the opportunity for free time during the activity, good weather was predicted on the day of the activity, existing skills were adequate for the activity, and accommodation was provided if required.  相似文献
