黄河三角洲潮间带不同类型湿地景观格局变化与趋势预测   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
以1979—2013年7期卫星遥感影像(Landsat TM)为数据源,结合野外实地调查,通过建立黄河三角洲潮间带湿地数据库,探讨不同类型湿地的景观格局以及自然与人为因素对景观格局变化的影响,并基于Markov模型对未来20年三角洲潮间带不同类型湿地的景观格局进行了趋势预测。结果表明,三角洲的潮间带湿地面积在1979—2013年间整体呈先降低后增加变化。其中,1979—2010年的湿地面积持续减少,由1050.28 km~2减少为575.39 km~2,减少率为45.22%;2010—2013年的湿地面积略有增加,由575.39 km~2增加为596.17 km~2,增长率为0.36%。1979—2013年,潮间带主要湿地景观类型随距海远近均呈明显带状分布,但芦苇湿地面积呈明显降低趋势(减少273.53 km~2,减少率为79.68%),盐田养殖池面积呈显著增加趋势(增长12.04km~2,增长率为1584.21%),而光滩、碱蓬湿地、碱蓬-柽柳湿地和柽柳-芦苇湿地等其它类型湿地面积整体均呈波动减少趋势。未来20年,潮间带湿地面积整体将呈降低趋势,其值将由2010年的575.39 km~2减少为2030年的546.98 km~2,减少率为6.60%。芦苇湿地面积将继续减少(减少30.16 km~2,减少率为24.12%),盐田养殖池面积将持续增长(增加3.71 km~2,增长率为38.61%),而光滩、碱蓬湿地、碱蓬-柽柳湿地和柽柳-芦苇湿地等其它类型湿地面积均将呈小幅波动变化。研究发现,尽管自然与人为驱动力的双重作用决定了1979—2013年间潮间带的湿地景观格局及其动态变化,但黄河年输沙量(x_1)、区域GDP(x_2)和水产品产量(x_3)对潮间带湿地面积变化(y)的影响更为重要(y=733.192+35.317 x_1-0.005 x_2-4.085 x_3,P=0.00010.05),其对过去30多年间潮间带湿地面积变化的解释贡献高达76.7%。随着黄河三角洲高效生态经济区国家战略的实施,为实现潮间带区域的可持续发展,潮间带湿地的保护与生态保育应给予特别重视。  相似文献

Salinity changes resulting from storm surge, tides, precipitation, and stormwater run-off are common in coastal wetlands. Soil microbial communities respond quickly to salinity changes, altering the rate of soil organic carbon (SOC) loss and associated biogeochemical processes. This study quantified the impact of salinity-altering pulses on SOC loss, defined as microbial respiration (CO2 flux) at high and low tide, CH4 flux, and dissolved OC (DOC) release, in 3 intertidal wetlands (Jacksonville, FL, USA). Intact soil cores from a freshwater tidal, brackish, and salt marsh were exposed to simulated tides and 3 salinity pulsing events during a 53-day laboratory experiment. Soil and water physio-chemical properties, nutrient release, and microbial indicators were measured. Microbial respiration was the dominate pathway of SOC loss (>97 %). Soil hydraulic conductivity was greater in brackish and salt marshes and was critical to overall soil respiration. High tide CO2 flux was greatest in the freshwater marsh (58 % of SOC loss) and positively correlated with DOC concentration; low tide CO2 flux was greatest in brackish and salt marshes (62 and 70 % of SOC loss, respectively) and correlated with NH4 + and microbial biomass. The freshwater marsh was sensitive to brackish pulses, causing a 112 % increase in respiration, presumably from accelerated sulfate reduction and N-cycling. SOC loss increased in the salt marsh pulsed with freshwater, suggesting freshwater run-off may reduce a salt marsh’s ability to keep-pace with sea level rise. Increased inundation from storm surges could accelerate SOC loss in freshwater marshes, while decreasing SOC loss in brackish and salt marshes.  相似文献

Adult and juvenile fish utilise salt marshes for food and shelter at high tide, moving into adjacent sublittoral regions during low tide. Understanding whether there are high levels of site fidelity for different species of coastal fish has important implications for habitat conservation and the design of marine protected areas. We hypothesised that common salt marsh fish species would demonstrate a high site fidelity, resulting in minimal inter-marsh connectivity. Carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) stable isotope ratios of larvae and juveniles of five common salt marsh fish (Atherina presbyter, Chelon labrosus, Clupea harengus, Dicentrarchus labrax, Pomatoschistus microps), seven types of primary producer and seven secondary consumer food sources were sampled in five salt marshes within two estuary complexes along the coast of south-east England. Significant differences in 13C and 15N signatures between salt marshes indicated distinct sub-populations utilising the area of estuary around each salt marsh, and limited connectivity, even within the same estuary complex. 15N ratios were responsible for the majority of inter-marsh differences for each species and showed similar site-specific patterns in ratios in primary producers, secondary consumers and fish. Fish diets (derived from isotope mixing models) varied between species but were mostly consistent between marsh sites, indicating that dietary shifts were not the source of variability of the inter-marsh isotopic signatures within species. These results demonstrate that for some common coastal fish species, high levels of site fidelity result in individual salt marshes operating as discrete habitats for fish assemblages.  相似文献

Sea level rise will change inundation regimes in salt marshes, altering redox dynamics that control nitrification – a potential source of the potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O) – and denitrification, a major nitrogen (N) loss pathway in coastal ecosystems and both a source and sink of N2O. Measurements of net N2O fluxes alone yield little insight into the different effects of redox conditions on N2O production and consumption. We used in situ measurements of gross N2O fluxes across a salt marsh elevation gradient to determine how soil N2O emissions in coastal ecosystems may respond to future sea level rise. Soil redox declined as marsh elevation decreased, with lower soil nitrate and higher ferrous iron in the low marsh compared to the mid and high marshes (P < 0.001 for both). In addition, soil oxygen concentrations were lower in the low and mid‐marshes relative to the high marsh (P < 0.001). Net N2O fluxes differed significantly among marsh zones (P = 0.009), averaging 9.8 ± 5.4 μg N m?2 h?1, ?2.2 ± 0.9 μg N m?2 h?1, and 0.67 ± 0.57 μg N m?2 h?1 in the low, mid, and high marshes, respectively. Both net N2O release and uptake were observed in the low and high marshes, but the mid‐marsh was consistently a net N2O sink. Gross N2O production was highest in the low marsh and lowest in the mid‐marsh (P = 0.02), whereas gross N2O consumption did not differ among marsh zones. Thus, variability in gross N2O production rates drove the differences in net N2O flux among marsh zones. Our results suggest that future studies should focus on elucidating controls on the processes producing, rather than consuming, N2O in salt marshes to improve our predictions of changes in net N2O fluxes caused by future sea level rise.  相似文献

Experiments performed in two external-loop airlift bioreactors of laboratory and pilot scale, (1.880–1.189) · 10–3 m3 and (0.170-0.157)m3, respectively, are reported. The A D /A R ratio was varied between 0.111–1.000 and 0.040–0.1225 in the laboratory and pilot contractor respectively.Water and solutions of different coalescence (2-propanol 2% vol, 1 M Na (glucose 50% wt/vol) and rheological behaviour (non-Newtonian starch solutions with consistency index K=0.061–3.518 Pas n and flow behaviour index n=0.86-0.39), respectively, were used as liquid phase. Compressed air at superficial velocities v SGR =0.016–0.178 ms–1 in the laboratory contactor and v SGR =0.010–0.120 ms–1 in the pilot contactor, respectively was used as gaseous phase.The A D /A R ratio affect gas-holdup behaviour as a result of the influence of A D /A R on liquid circulation velocity.Experimental results show that A D /A R ratio affect circulation liquid velocity by modifying he resistence to flow and by varying the fraction of the total volume contained in downcomer and riser. A D /A R ratio has proven to be the main factor which determines the friction in the reactor. Mass transfer coefficients were measured in three concentric-tube airlift reactors of different scales (RIMP, V L =0.07 m3;RIS?1,V L =2.50 m3;RIS?2, V L =5.20 m3). The effects of top and bottom clearance and flow resistances at downcorner entrance were studied in water-air system. Experimental results show that h s ,h B and A d /A R ratio affect K L a values as a result of their influence on gas holdup and liquid velocity. The gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficients for all the geometric variables were successfully correlated as Sherwood number with Froude and Galilei numbers, the bottom spatial ratio (B=h B /D R ), the top spatial ratio , the gas separation ratio and the downcomer flow resistance ratio (R=A d /A R ). The proposed empirical model satisfactorily fitted the experimental data obtained in large airlift reactors and some data presented in literature.  相似文献

In the oligohaline Alloway Creek watershed of the upper Delaware Bay, invasive Phragmites australis (Common reed; hereafter Phragmites) has been removed in an attempt to restore tidal marshes to pre‐invasion form and function. In order to determine the effects of Phragmites on nekton use of intertidal creeks and to evaluate the success of this restoration, intertidal creek nekton assemblages were sampled with weirs from May to November for 7 years (1999‐2005) in three marsh types: natural Spartina alterniflora (Smooth cordgrass; hereafter Spartina), sites treated for Phragmites removal (hereafter referred to as Treated), and invasive Phragmites marshes. Replicate intertidal creek collections in all three marsh types consisted primarily of resident nekton and were dominated by a relatively low number of ubiquitous intertidal species. The Treated marsh nekton assemblage was distinguished by greater abundances of most nekton, especially Fundulus heteroclitus (Mummichog). Phragmites had little impact on nekton use of intertidal creeks over this period as evidenced by similar nekton assemblages in the Spartina and Phragmites marshes for most years. Long‐term assemblage‐level analyses and nekton abundances indicated that the Treated marsh provided enhanced conditions for intertidal creek nekton. The response of intertidal creek nekton suggests that the stage of the restoration may influence the results of comparisons between the marsh types and should be considered when evaluating marsh restorations.  相似文献

The heritability (h2) of fitness traits is often low. Although this has been attributed to directional selection having eroded genetic variation in direct proportion to the strength of selection, heritability does not necessarily reflect a trait's additive genetic variance and evolutionary potential (“evolvability”). Recent studies suggest that the low h2 of fitness traits in wild populations is caused not by a paucity of additive genetic variance (VA) but by greater environmental or nonadditive genetic variance (VR). We examined the relationship between h2 and variance‐standardized selection intensities (i or βσ), and between evolvability (IA:VA divided by squared phenotypic trait mean) and mean‐standardized selection gradients (βμ). Using 24 years of data from an island population of Savannah sparrows, we show that, across diverse traits, h2 declines with the strength of selection, whereas IA and IR (VR divided by squared trait mean) are independent of the strength of selection. Within trait types (morphological, reproductive, life‐history), h2, IA, and IR are all independent of the strength of selection. This indicates that certain traits have low heritability because of increased residual variance due to the age at which they are expressed or the multiple factors influencing their expression, rather than their association with fitness.  相似文献

Abstract Net nitrate uptake rates were measured and the kinetics calculated in non-nodulated Pisum sativum L. cv. Marma and Lemna gibba L. adapted to constant relative rates of nitrate-N additions (RA), ranging from 0.03 to 0.27 d?1 for Pisum and from 0.05 to 0.40 d?1 for Lemna, Vmax of net nitrate uptake (measured in the range 10 to 100 mmol m?3 nitrate, i.e. ‘system I’) increased with RA in the growth limiting range but decreased when RA exceeded the relative growth rate (RGR), Km was not significantly related to changes in RA. On the basis of previous 13N-flux experiments, it is concluded that the differences in Vmax at growth limiting RA are attributable to differences in influx rates. Linear relationships between Vmax and tissue nitrogen concentrations were obtained in the growth limiting range for both species, and extrapolated intercepts relate well with the previously defined minimal nitrogen concentrations for plant growth (Oscarson, Ingemarsson & Larsson, 1989). Analysis of Vmax for net nitrate uptake on intact plant basis in relation to nitrogen demand during stable, nitrogen limited, growth shows an increased overcapacity at lower RA values in both species, which is largely explained by the increased relative root size at low RA. A balancing nitrate concentration, defined as the steady state concentration needed to sustain the relative rate of increase in plant nitrogen (RN), predicted by RA, was calculated for both species. In the growth limiting range, this value ranges from 3.5 mmol m?3 (RA 0.03 d?1) to 44 mmol m?3 (RA 0.21 d?1) for Pisum and from 0.2 mmol m?3 (RA 0.05 d?1) to 5.4 mmol m?3 (RA 0.03 d?1) for Lemna. It is suggested that this value can be used as a unifying measure of the affinity for nitrate, integrating the performance of the nitrate uptake system with nitrate flux and long term growth and demand for nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary

The flux of dissolved inorganic nutrients (NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, SRP) and suspended particulates (particulate organic carbon POC, and particulate inorganic carbon PIC) was measured across the mouth of a small creek draining a portion of the intertidal Spartina salt marsh in the Swartkops estuary. Direct measurements of constituent concentration, the volume of water flowing into and out of the creek basin at discrete time intervals, and tidal height were made over full spring tide cycles on a two-weekly basis during a 12 month study period. Results show that the marsh acts as a sink for NH4-N, NO2-N, and NO3-N on an annual basis, but exports soluble reactive phosphate to the contiguous estuarine waters. The marsh also imports nominal amounts of suspended POC and PIC (<1.5 mm in size), but apparently exports larger detrital particles (>1.5 mm) on ebb tides to the estuary. It is concluded that the marsh retains and utilizes most of its own production and functions virtually as an independent ecosystem.  相似文献

Earlier cross‐sectional studies found that a single magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) slice predicts total visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT) volumes well. We sought to investigate the accuracy of trunk single slice imaging in estimating changes of total VAT and SAT volume in 123 overweight and obese subjects who were enrolled in a 24‐week CB‐1R inverse agonist clinical trial (weight change, ?7.7 ± 5.3 kg; SAT change, ?5.4 ± 4.9 l, VAT change, ?0.8 ± 1.0 l). VAT and SAT volumes at baseline and 24 weeks were derived from whole‐body MRI images. The VAT area 5–10 cm above L4—L5 (A+5–10) (R2 = 0.59–0.70, P < 0.001) best predicted changes in VAT volume but the strength of these correlations was significantly lower than those at baseline (R2 = 0.85–0.90, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the L4—L5 slice poorly predicted VAT volume changes (R2 = 0.24–0.29, P < 0.001). Studies will require 44–69% more subjects if (A+5–10) is used and 243–320% more subjects if the L4—L5 slice is used for equivalent power of multislice total volume measurements of VAT changes. Similarly, single slice imaging predicts SAT loss less well than cross‐sectional SAT (R2 = 0.31–0.49 vs. R2 = 0.52–0.68, P < 0.05). Results were the same when examined in men and women separately. A single MRI slice 5–10 cm above L4—L5 is more powerful than the traditionally used L4—L5 slice in detecting VAT changes, but in general single slice imaging poorly predicts VAT and SAT changes during weight loss. For certain study designs, multislice imaging may be more cost‐effective than single slice imaging in detecting changes for VAT and SAT.  相似文献

Flux calculations demonstrate that many estuaries are natural filters for trace metals. Yet, the underlying processes are poorly investigated. In the present study, it was hypothesized that intertidal marshes contribute significantly to the contaminant filter function of estuaries. Trace metal concentrations and sediment characteristics were measured along a transect from the subtidal, over an intertidal flat and marsh to a restored marsh with controlled reduced tide. Metal concentrations in the intertidal and restored marsh were found to be a factor two to five higher than values in the subtidal and intertidal flat sediments. High metal concentrations and high accretion rates indicate a high metal accumulation capacity of the intertidal marshes. Overbank sedimentation in the tidal marshes of the entire estuary was calculated to remove 25% to 50% of the riverine metal influx, even though marshes comprise less than 8% of the total surface of the estuary. In addition, the large-scale implementation of planned tidal marsh restoration projects was estimated to almost double the trace metal storage capacity of the present natural tidal marshes in the estuary.  相似文献

A budget for net accumulation of fine-grained sediment (<63 μm) has been set up for the Sylt-Rømø tidal basin. Net accumulation within the basin was computed from210Pb core dating and mapping of the intertidal and supratidal surface sediments. It was found that a yearly mean value of 58·103 tons of sediment was deposited in the tidal basin. The largest sediment source for the net input of fine-grained sediment is the North Sea contributing about 64% to the net budget; the fluvial input and primary production contribute 14% and 15%, respectively. Local salt marsh erosion accounts for about 5% of the budget and atmospheric deposition for only 2%. The total amount of sediment deposited in the investigated area was low compared with earlier investigations in the Wadden Sea. This is explained partly by the intensive diking of the natural salt marshes fringing the area in the past, and partly by the exposed conditions of most of the intertidal flats. An index describing the trapping efficiency of the water exchanged between the North Sea and the Sylt-Rømø tidal area is defined as the ratio between yearly net sediment input from the North Sea and yearly exchanged water volume between the tidal basin and the sea. This index shows that in the Sylt-Rømø tidal basin, fine-grained suspended sediment “filters” out of the exchanged sea water at a rate that is 12 times lower than in the Gr»dyb tidal basin. It is concluded that the net deposition of fine-grained sediment in a tidal basin is mainly a function of physiographical and hydrodynamical parameters and to a lesser degree of sediment availability  相似文献

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

The structures of eukaryotic ribosomal 5S RNA from rat liver and of prokaryotic 5S RNA from E. coli (A-conformer) have been investigated by scattering methods. For both molecules, a molar mass of 44,500±4,000 was determined from small angle X-ray scattering as well as from dynamic light scattering. The shape parameters of the two rRNAs, volume V c, surface O c, radius of gyration R s, maximum dimension of the molecule L, thickness D, and cross section radius of gyration R sq, agree within the experimental error limits. The mean values are V c=57±3 nm3, O c=165±10 nm2, R s=3.37±0.05 nm, L=10.8±0.7 nm, D=1.57±0.07 nm, R sa=0.92±0.01 nm.Identical structures for the E. coli 5S rRNA and the rat liver 5S rRNA at a resolution of 1 nm can be deduced from this agreement and from the comparison of experimental X-ray scattering curves and of experimental electron distance distribution function. The flat shape model derived for prokaryotic and eukaryotic 5S rRNA shows a compact region and two protruding arms. Double helical stems are eleven-fold helices with a mean base pair distance of 0.28 nm. Combining the shape information obtained from X-ray scattering with the information about the frictional behaviour of the molecules, deduced from the diffusion coefficients D 20,w 0 =(5.9±0.2)·10-7 cm2s-1 and (6.2±0.2)·10-7 cm2s-1 for rat liver 5S rRNA and E. coli 5S rRNA, respectively, a solvation shell of about 0.3 nm thickness around both molecules is determined. This structural similarity and the consensus secondary structure pattern derived from comparative sequence analyses suggest that all 5S rRNAs may indeed have conserved essentially the same type of folding of their polynucleotide strands during evolution, despite having very different sequences.  相似文献

Gas holdup investigation was performed in two external-loop airlift bioreactors of laboratory (V L =1.189·10?3? 1.880·10?3 m3; H R =1.16 ? 1.56 m; H D = 1.10 m; A D /A R = 0.111 ? 1.000) and pilot scale (V L =0.157?0.170 m3; H R =4.3?4.7 m; H D =4.0?4.4 m;A D /A R =0.04?0.1225), respectively, using as liquid phase non-Newtonian starch solutions of different concentration with K=0.061?3.518 Pa sn and n=0.86?0.39 and fermentation broths of P. chrysogenum, S. griseus, S. erythreus, B. licheniformis and C. acremonium at different hours since inoculation and from different batches. The influence of bioreactor geometry, liquid properties and the amount of introduced compressed air was investigated. The effect of sparger design on gas holdup was found to be negligible. It was found that gas holdup depends on the flow media index, ?GR decreasing with the increase of liquid pseudoplasticity, A D /A R ratio and H R /H D ratio. The experimental data are in agreement with those presented in literature by Popovic and Robinson, which take into account liquid properties, geometric parameters and gas superficial velocity, with a maximum error of ±30%. It was obtained a correlation for gas holdup estimation taking into account the non-Newtonian behaviour of the fermentation broths and the dry weight of the solid phase, as well. The concordance between the experimental data and those calculated with the proposed correlation was good, with a maximum error of ±17%. Also, a dimensionless correlation for gas holdup involving superficial velocities of gas and liquid, cross sectional areas ratio, dispersion height to riser diameter ratio, as well as Froude and Morton numbers, was obtained.  相似文献

Characters which are closely linked to fitness often have low heritabilities (VA/VP). Low heritabilities could be because of low additive genetic variation (VA), that had been depleted by directional selection. Alternatively, low heritabilities may be caused by large residual variation (VR=VPVA) compounded at a disproportionately higher rate than VA across integrated characters. Both hypotheses assume that each component of quantitative variation has an independent effect on heritability. However, VA and VR may also covary, in which case differences in heritability cannot be fully explained by the independent effects of elimination‐selection or compounded residual variation. We compared the central tendency of published behavioural heritabilities (mean=0.31, median=0.23) with morphological and life history data collected by 26 ). Average behavioural heritability was not significantly different from average life history heritability, but both were smaller than average morphological heritability. We cross‐classified behavioural traits to test whether variation in heritability was related to selection (dominance, domestic/wild) or variance compounding (integration level). There was a significant three‐way interaction between indices of selection and variance compounding, related to the absence of either effect at the highest integration level. At lower integration levels, high dominance variance indicated effects of selection. It was also indicated by the low CVA of domestic species. At the same time CVR increased disproportionately faster than CVA across integration levels, demonstrating variance compounding. However, neither CVR nor CVA had a predominant effect on heritability. The partial regression coefficients of CVR and CVA on heritability were similar and a path analysis indicated that their (positive) correlation was also necessary to explain variation in heritability. 为了更好理解若尔盖高原不同微生境下沼泽湿地生态系统CO2排放通量的变化特征,以若尔盖高原湿地自然保护区为研究对象,2013和2014年生长季期间,采用了静态箱和快速温室气体法原位观测了3种湿地5种微生境下沼泽湿地CO2排放通量时空变化规律。结果表明:长期淹水微地貌草丘区湿地(PHK)和洼地区湿地(PHW) CO2排放通量变化范围分别为38.99-1731.74 mg m-2 h-1和46.69-335.22 mg m-2 h-1,季节性淹水区微地貌草丘区湿地(SHK)和洼地区湿地(SHW) CO2排放通量变化范围分别为193.90-2575.60 mg m-2 h-1和49.93-1467.45 mg m-2 h-1,而两者过渡区的无淹水区沼泽湿地(Lawn) CO2排放通量变化范围194.20-898.75 mg m-2 h-1。相关性分析表明5种微地貌区沼泽湿地CO2排放通量季节性变化与不同深度土壤温度均存在显著正相关,与水位存在显著负相关(PHW、SHW、SHK、Lawn)或不相关(PHK),并且水位和温度(5 cm)共同解释了CO2排放通量季节性变化的87%。3种湿地5种微生境下沼泽湿地CO2排放通量存在空间变化规律,主要受水位影响,但植物也影响沼泽湿地CO2排放通量空间变化规律,并且表明沼泽湿地CO2排放通量与水位平均值存在显著负相关。  相似文献

The residence time distribution analysis was used to investigated the flow behaviour in an external-loop airlift bioreactor regarded as a single unit and discriminating its different sections. The experimental results were fitted according to plug flow with superimposed axial dispersion and tank-in-series models, which have proved that it is reasonable to assume plug flow with axial dispersion in the overall reactor, in riser and downcomer sections, as well, while the gas separator should be considered as a perfectly mixed zone. Many authors have referred to the important role of vegetation in the consolidation of salt marsh sediments, but experiments previously carried out by us have shown results that do not always agree with these statements. In other words, the type of salt marsh surface coverage is not the main factor that contributes to the consolidation of sediments. To test this hypothesis different Portuguese salt marsh stations (species/unvegetated areas) from two sites, Tagus estuary (Corroios and Pancas) and Ria de Aveiro (Barra and Verdemilho), were compared to evaluate their influence on suspended matter deposition on the salt marsh surface. A short-term sedimentation study was performed within stands of Spartina maritima, Halimione portulacoides, Sarcocornia perennis subsp. perennis and unvegetated areas, by analysing the deposition of sediment material on nylon filters anchored to the marsh surface. Numerical results obtained from hydrodynamic models coupled to a Lagrangean module implemented for the Ria de Aveiro and the Tagus Estuary, namely the root-mean square velocity (V rms) and residual velocity of tides, were also used. Average sedimentation rates (mean value between the different surface cover in a salt marsh) showed a seasonal trend more or less defined but with significantly different values between sites and salt marshes. Sedimentation rates varied between marshes: there are significant differences between Pancas and the other three marshes, but only significant differences in sedimentation rates between Spartina and Sarcocornia. Despite the important role of vegetation in the consolidation of salt marsh sediments, our results suggest that, the position of stations and related abiotic conditions in the salt marshes are determining factors of variation to take into account in the studies related with the stabilization and survival of salt marshes facing sea level rise.
