Abstract

From January 1975 to June 1976, samples of Heterozius rotundifrons A. Milne Edwards, 1867 were taken monthly from the intertidal zone at First Bay, Kaikoura Peninsula (42°25′S, 173°42′E). Small crabs (< 8 mm carapace width) were never common; they were either too cryptic to be collected in quantity, or have a different habitat from larger crabs. Ovigerous females were present in all months except February (in both 1975 and 1976), but generally formed less than 50% of the total sample of females each month. The number of newly deposited eggs (0.75×0.81 mm) carried by females increased with increase in carapace width according to the equation y = -1123.56+102.97x (r 2 = 0.8213). Egg development lasted 3–5 months, and egg mortality during this period was almost 10%. The overall sex ratio for the 18-month sampling period was 1846 ♀ : 993 ♂, which suggests that females were approximately twice as numerous as males. However, when crabs were sorted into size classes it was evident that the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 in crabs of 6–12 mm carapace width, whereas females significantly (P<0.001) outnumbered males in the 13–21 mm size range. The right and left chela were approximately equal in length in females of all sizes, but the right chela of large males was greatly enlarged compared with the left, and with the chelae of females of comparable carapace width. Increase in the growth rate of the males’ right chela commenced at a carapace width of approximately 11.0 mm. Since the smallest ovigerous female collected also had a carapace width of 11.0 mm, it is concluded that both males and females attain sexual maturity at this size.  相似文献

We studied the female reproductive pattern of Callinectes sapidus, which was introduced to the Mediterranean in the 20th century. We assessed female size at first maturity, fecundity, and fecundity relationship to size in Iskenderun Bay, eastern Mediterranean, Turkey. Samples were collected between July 2014 and June 2015 using bottom trawling at depths ranging from 1 to 50 m. A total of 322 crabs were caught of which 308 (95.7%) were females including 116 ovigerous ones. The minimum carapace width of the mature females was 39.1 mm and the mean carapace width 123.8 mm. The carapace width of ovigerous females varied between 95.1 and 144.5 mm, with a mean of 120.3 mm. The highest number of ovigerous females was observed in July and August. Mean fecundity was 1.91 million (667,950–4,669,853) eggs per female. A weak positive linear relationship between fecundity and carapace width was noted, as well as a high correlation with total egg weight. In the eastern Mediterranean, maturity sizes of females were smaller than those in the native region of the species.  相似文献

Based on materials from trawling (2002–2005) and plankton (2004–2006) surveys, some problems of the reproduction biology of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus (Tilesius, 1815) population from Peter the Great Bay are considered. It was shown that the width of the carapace varied from 105 to 190 mm in female red king crabs with eggs; 50% of the females reached maturity with a carapace width of 112.8 mm. The average individual absolute fecundity of females was 200000 (114000–296000) eggs. A direct linear correlation between fecundity and female carapace width was recorded. The zoeas I–IV of the red king crab occurred in the plankton from the middle of April up to the end of the second decade of May at water temperatures from 2.8 up to 9.3°C. The periods of larval occurrence in plankton in various years correlated with the water temperature, with a temperature decrease, the duration of the pelagic period increased. No direct correlation was revealed between the phytoplankton bloom and larval release. The density of red king crab larvae in Peter the Great Bay did not exceed 0.02–13.3 spec./m3. The maximum concentration of zoeas was recorded in the central part of Ussuriysky Bay.  相似文献

Abstract:  Fossil eggshells from the Late Miocene Urumaco Formation of north-western Venezuela are reported. Stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine shell gross morphology and ultrastructure, respectively. Diagnostic turtle features in the eggshells include a distinct pattern of crystal aggregations within the shell units. The eggs had an elliptical shape with a maximum diameter of c . 56·5 mm and width of c . 43·5 mm, as measured in a specimen preserving the egg's outline. Scattered clutches of broken eggshells were found embedded in one horizon of a coarse, sandy sediment, with grains not well sorted containing foraminifera and fragments of bivalve shells. The sediments are rich in ichnofossils and the reddish colour of the sandstone indicates an oxidizing environment. These facts suggest that the eggs were deposited in a beach directly facing the sea or brackish waters, perhaps near a river delta or lagoon, as is typical of the Urumaco sequence. In the same stratigraphical layer and next to one of the egg clusters, a carapace assignable to the pelomedusoid Bairdemys venezuelensis was found, suggesting that this species was a colonial nester that laid its eggs in beaches and lived in a marine or nearshore marine environment.  相似文献

A reproductive biology study of the spider crab Schizophrys aspera (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) was conducted in the Suez Canal from July 2012 to June 2013. The annual sex ratio (Male:Female) of S. aspera was female biased with values of 1:1.25. Out of the four ovarian development stages of this crab, two stages were observed in the Suez Canal throughout the whole year. The ovigerous crab’s carapace width varied from 28 to 52 mm. This crab species can spawn during most of the year in the canal water, with a peak during late spring and early winter. The fecundity of ovigerous females ranged between 2349 and 13600 eggs with a mean of 5494 ± 1486 eggs. Female crabs that reached sexual maturity exhibited a minimum carapace width varying between 22 and 46 mm, and fifty percentage of all ovigerous females showed a carapace width of 36 mm.  相似文献

Morphology of Swift Tern Thalasseus bergii bergii eggs was examined on Robben Island, South Africa. A recently formed colony was found abandoned en masse, probably following human disturbance, and 146 freshly laid eggs were collected. The mean±SD nest density was 7±2.5 nests m?2 and 3% of nests contained two eggs. Eggs ranged in shape from oval to pyriform and displayed black markings (blotched, streaked, scrawled or speckled) overlaying the eggs’ colour. The mean length and width of a sample of 105 eggs was 62.2?mm (56.3–66.9?mm) and 42.3?mm (39.8–45.3?mm), respectively. All collected eggs were weighed and the mean mass was 57.9±3.72?g. Estimated volume of eggs was calculated to be 56.3±3.74 cm3. This is the first report of mass measurements obtained from freshly laid eggs Swift Tern eggs and provides insight on egg morphology, for which knowledge is limited for this species.  相似文献

Field sampling during successive inundations was followed by laboratory studies on growth, egg production and hatching of Triops granarius from temporary pans in southern Africa. The species was common where mean inundation was less than one month. Sexual maturity was reached in as little as six days at a carapace length of 6.5 mm. A biomass of 2.0 g, at carapace length of 25 mm was achieved in two months. Males and females occurred in similar numbers and mating was a prerequisite for sustained fertile egg production. Eggs were in similar numbers in both pouches, while successive clutches were larger. Hatching was light-dependent. Desiccation of eggs was not necessary but a period of up to 20 days was required before undesiccated eggs would hatch. In the event of desiccation, no minimum period thereof was necessary and hatching occurred within as little as a day of rehydration. Hatching success seldom exceeded 50 percent. As a candidate for aquaculture, the species has failings such as low hatching rate and cannibalism, but it grows rapidly and produces eggs over an extended period.  相似文献

Egg batches laid by females of Ixodes persulcatus (maintained under a photoperiod of L:D 20:4 before feeding) contained eggs of two sizes: numerous normal eggs of 0.578 × 0.421 mm and some giant eggs of 0.776×0.515 mm. Giant eggs were 32–34% greater in length and 22–24% greater in width than normal eggs. Females maintained under a short-day photoperiod (L:D 12:12) laid only normal eggs (0.588×0.417 mm). There were no differences between these eggs in viability and developmental time, but larvae hatched from giant eggs were larger (length of body 23–28% greater and of gnathosoma 12–15% greater) than larvae from normal eggs. This dimorphism of eggs and larvae was not sex determined, but may be a maternal photoperiodic effect.  相似文献

Along the east coast of North Kurils, the egg deposits of Careproctus snailfishes (Scorpaeniformes: Liparidae) were revealed in the gill cavity of 9.9% of all golden king crabs, mostly in individuals with carapace of 61–80 mm width (61.6%). The number of Careproctus eggs in the gill cavity of crabs increased with the increase of the carapace width. In fact, 97.0% of the crabs had such egg deposits only at one side of their carapaces. Most of the egg deposits, apparently, belonged to C. cypsellurus and C. furcellus. The number of crabs with egg deposits was related to the number of post-molt individuals. Evidently, egg depositing by Careproctus snailfishes out of the gill cavity of crabs is a rather widespread phenomenon.  相似文献

The presence of the ectosymbiont Dissodactylus mellitae on Mellita isometra was studied at Tybee Island in Georgia. The number of crabs found on sand dollars, stage of maturity, sex, numbers of eggs, and size of eggs produced by crabs were noted. The test diameter of sand dollars, and the number and diameter of eggs produced were also noted. Infestation rates of crabs on sand dollars varied over time. The maximum number of crabs found on a sand dollar was 10. The three types of population dispersion, random, uniform, and clumped, were observed for crabs on sand dollars throughout the sampling period. Clumped or gregarious settling was observed when juvenile crabs were abundant, uniform and random distribution when mature crabs were abundant. Female crabs were significantly larger than male crabs, with carapace width of the largest mature female crab being 4.6 mm and the largest male 3.1 mm. Crabs produced between 80 and 300 eggs from 0.188 to 0.291 mm in diameter. Bigger crabs produced significantly more eggs than smaller crabs. Sand dollar sizes were 50-110 mm, with a mode between 60 and 70 mm. The effect of crab burden on egg production in the sand dollar was time-dependent. The presence of crabs on sand dollars correlated with total egg production of sand dollars in May, the peak of the spawning season, with sand dollars carrying one or two crabs having a lower egg production than those without crabs. Overall, variation in egg size was attributed to variation among females followed by variation between seasons and crab burden.  相似文献

Abstract. The relationship between individual heterozygosity and characteristics likely to be associated with fitness was investigated in the labyrinth spider Metepeira ventura . Adult females and their egg sacs were collected at a coastal site in southern California, and three measures of bodily condition (carapace width, weight, residual index) and six measures of reproductive output (number of egg sacs, variation in egg number among sacs [coefficient of variation], total number of eggs, mean eggs/sac, mean eggs/sac divided by carapace width, mean eggs/sac divided by weight) were determined for each spider. The sample was polymorphic at three allozyme loci that were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, and individual females were heterozygous at up to two of the three loci, forming three heterozygosity classes (0, 1, and 2). None of the bodily condition measures were significantly related to the number of heterozygous loci, while four of the reproductive output estimators (total number of eggs, mean eggs/sac, mean eggs/sac divided by carapace width, mean eggs/sac divided by weight) were significantly influenced by heterozygosity. In each significant case, values for class 2 females were less than those for class 0 and 1 females, whose values were usually more similar. Thus, while female bodily condition was comparable among classes, the most heterozygous females produced fewer total eggs and eggs per sac than their less heterozygous peers. The fact that females of M. ventura engage in a reproductive investment-number trade-off suggests that high-variability and low-variability females may be pursuing distinct reproductive strategies in the wild, with more heterozygous females being K -selected (smaller clutches, heavier eggs) and more homozygous females being r -selected (larger clutches, lighter eggs). Further investigation will be needed to assess more fully the fitness value of heterozygosity in M. ventura .  相似文献

The relative growth of a number of morphological dimensions of the South American freshwater crab Trichodactylus borellianus (Trichodactylidae) were compared and related to sexual dimorphism. Crabs were collected from ponds in the Middle Paraná River in Argentina. A regression model with segmented relationship was used to test for relative growth between these measurements where breakpoints infer the body size at which crabs reach sexual maturity. In both sexes the carapace width and the length, height, and thickness of the right and left chelae were measured, as well as the male pleopod length and the female abdomen width. All of these measurements were found to show positive allometry with the exception of the male pleopod length and the left chelae, which did not show a breakpoint. In females the breakpoint for the abdomen width inferred a morphological sexual maturity at carapace width 6.9 mm. In males the break point for the pleopod length was at carapace width 6.6 mm, with that for the chelae measurements was between carapace widths 6.4 and 6.9 mm. The relative growth pattern in Trichodactylus borellianus was found to be similar to that recorded for other species of the family Trichodactylidae.  相似文献

The invasion of Cherax quadricarinatus, the Australian redclaw crayfish, in the Sanyati Basin of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, is reported. A total of 79 crayfish were caught at 10 out of 12 sampling sites in the Sanyati Basin in November–December 2012. The average catch per unit effort (CPUE) varied from 1.1 to 4 crayfish per trap per night, carapace length ranged from 29 to 93.5 mm, and weight ranged from 4 to 196.2 g. Most crayfish were between 50 and 59.9 mm carapace length. Males (average 82.6 g) were significantly heavier than females (37.2 g) and males were larger in carapace length, carapace width, chela length and chela width. A feral population of C. quadricarinatus is now established in the Sanyati Basin. Possible modes of dispersal within the basin are discussed.  相似文献

Trichogramma principium Sug. & Sor. females were sequentially offered two portions of the grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella Oliv.) eggs, either young (1-day old) or old (eggs that had developed 6 days at a temperature of 20 °C). The probability of host acceptance depended not only on current host age, but also on the age of the previously offered host. Particularly, Trichogramma females more often oviposited in old host eggs when previously offered young eggs (35–45% of Trichogramma females laid eggs) compared to females which were sequentially offered two portions of old eggs (15–20% of Trichogramma females laid eggs). In other words, parasitization by Trichogramma was stable even when transferred from young (preferred) to old (usually rejected) eggs. Dissections showed that refusing females had significantly more mature eggs than ovipositing females, independent of host age. Among ovipositing females, wasps provided with young hosts had fewer mature ovarial eggs than wasps provided with old hosts. Supposedly, Trichogramma females offered old hosts require a higher motivation to oviposit and have a correspondingly higher egg load than females offered young (preferred) hosts.  相似文献

Studies on relative growth and sexual maturity are important to understand the reproductive biology of a species. The aims of this study were to determine the relative growth and to estimate the size of Panopeus occidentalis at morphological sexual maturity, as well as to confirm whether this species demonstrates heterochely or handedness. Individuals were collected every two months from March 2013 to July 2014 in the intertidal estuarine zone of Cananeia, São Paulo, Brazil. The following measurements were taken: carapace width (CW), carapace length (CL), right and left cheliped propodus length (CPL), right and left cheliped propodus height (CPH), right and left cheliped propodus width (CPW), abdomen width (AW), and first pleopod length (FPL). The morphometric relationship used to estimate the size at morphological sexual maturity were CW vs. AW for females and CW vs. FPL for males; these comparisons yielded estimated CW values of 15.60 mm and 16.67 mm, respectively. Heterochely was observed but handedness was not present. The species has a major cheliped on one side, but the side is not constant. This study provides the first insights on the relative growth, sexual maturity, heterochely, and handedness on a population of P. occidentalis in a conserved area.  相似文献

Information on biometric and biological parameters of Cancer bellianus Johnson, 1861 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae) off the Canary Islands is given. Crabs examined were collected during experimental fishing surveys during 1974–1998. Carapace length, carapace width, total wet weight, sex and ovigerous condition were determined. This species was caught at depths from 153 to 750 m, the deepest ever recorded. Size frequency distributions were assembled and size-weight relationships were estimated by sex. Sex-ratio as a function of size and depth was determined. The size at first maturity was calculated by analysing the relative growth between the carapace length and the left chela width: 103.5 mm CL in males, 101.2 mm CL in females. Ovigerous females, egg size and fecundity estimates are reported apparently for the first time.  相似文献

Schistocerca gregaria sometimes refuse to lay eggs into the “old sand” that is kept in their cages for several days. We investigated why they rejected the old sand for oviposition. Locusts exclusively laid eggs into new sand when presented together with old sand, indicating that the old sand contained an oviposition-inhibiting (OI) factor. We examined whether this factor was derived from locust feces or fed grass (Bromus catharticus). Locusts laid all eggs into the sand with grass when presented together with sand containing feces. In contrast, few eggs were laid into the sand with grass when clean sand was offered at the same time, suggesting that the OI factor originated from the grass and was concentrated in the feces. The OI factor was efficiently extracted from feces with water compared with ethanol and acetone. OI activity was detected by extraction of feces with water for 1 min, although a longer extraction time yielded higher activity. The water extract of feces retained OI activity after boiling. None of the eggs which were buried in sand containing fecal extract hatched, whereas most of the eggs buried in clean sand or sand containing grass extract hatched, showing a correlation between OI activity and a lethal effect on eggs.  相似文献

Synopsis No clear sexual dimorphism occurs in Pollimyrus isidori. Females usually grew slightly larger than males. The anal-fin reflex, however, makes it easy to discriminate between males and females. Spawning took place during the first six hours of the dark phase, in the territory of the male. During each spawning act 2–4 eggs were laid. The male put the eggs into a well-hidden nest previously constructed from plant material. The eggs, free embryos, and larvae of several spawnings were guarded by the male for several weeks. The females laid on average 120 eggs per fractional spawning. The eggs were 2 mm in diameter, not adhesive and very yolky. There was a relationship between pH and viability (% embryos hatched). Hatching occurred on the third day after spawning. The respiratory network of segmental origin in the median fin fold was well developed in the free embryos. Transition to exogenous feeding occurred on day 14. The larval period ended when the fish were 15 mm long and 40–50 days old. First gonadal recrudescence occurred at a total length of 6 cm (about 200 days old). The environmental factors decreasing conductivity and pH, increasing water level, and imitation of rain led to gonadal recrudescence, but pH did not act as a cue. Recrudescence was triggered by a decrease of conductivity, but absolute values or ionic composition of the water were not important. Maturation was completed after about fifty days. Mature and spawning fish no longer required any variation of these environmental factors to maintain mature gonads. A steady and considerable increase in conductivity led to gonadal regression. The fish did not show postbreeding refractoriness.  相似文献

In 1997, Perth Zoo acquired six pink-eared turtles (Emydura victoriae) from the wild for display in the reptile facility. There is very little documented information on pink-eared turtles in captivity. This article looks at the reproductive biology, ecology, behavior, diet, and captive husbandry of the species. Eight clutches of eggs were documented over a 2-year period with an average clutch size of 10 eggs. Egg size was recorded with three clutches incubated to hatching. Ten hatchlings were maintained for a growth and development study. Measurements of weight, carapace length, width, height, and plastron length were recorded weekly for about 12 months, and then monthly for approximately 2 years. The data were analyzed and showed positive growth curves in all animals. Sexual dimorphism was observed after 20 weeks and sexual maturity in males observed after 2 years.  相似文献
