The survival of Atlantic salmon smolts on sudden exposure to low constant concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) has been measured under laboratory conditions; the 3-d LC50 is about 3 mg l−1 in freshwater and about 2.5 mg l−1 in 30% and 80%'sea water', even for fish acclimated for several days to low concentrations of DO and high salinity; median threshold concentrations of DO are probably close to 3.3 and 2.6 mg l−1 respectively.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts (n = 181) from two rivers were surgically implanted with acoustic transmitters and released to determine migration route, residency time and survival in a 50 km long estuarine fjord located on the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Data obtained from automated receivers placed throughout the Bay d'Espoir fjord indicated that migrating smolts used different routes to reach the outer areas of the fjord. The duration of time that smolts spent in the immediate estuary zone also differed between the two localities (7 and 17 days) although the total time smolts were resident in the fjord was similar and extensive (40 days). Many smolts were resident for periods of 4-8 weeks moving back and forth in the outer part of the fjord where maximum water depths range from 300 to 700 m. Survival in the estuary zone was greater for smolts with prolonged residency in estuarine habitat. Overall smolt survival to the fjord exit was moderately high (54-85%), indicating that the initial phase of migration did not coincide with a period of unusually high mortality.  相似文献

The migration pattern of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) post-smolts in the Baltic Sea was investigated based on tag recoveries of Carlin-tagged wild and hatchery-reared smolts released in the Simojoki river in 1972–2005. Exact date of sea entry was known only for the wild smolts. Tag recoveries of wild salmon in the estuary within 10 km from the river mouth were received on average 3.5 days (±2.0 SD) after release. Time required for emigration from the estuary was dependent on the sea surface temperature (SST) off the river ( R 2 = 0.625, P = 0.004), being shorter in years with warmer than colder sea temperatures. Outside the estuary, the wild and hatchery-reared post-smolts migrated southwards along the eastern coast of the northern Gulf of Bothnia, the tag recoveries coinciding with the warm thermal zone in the SST occurring along the coastal area. After arriving in the southern Gulf of Bothnia in late summer the post-smolts mostly migrated near the western coast, reaching the Baltic main basin in late autumn. The relationships between the marine conditions and migration patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-two salmon smolts, Salmo salar L., carrying miniature sonic tags were tracked individually for periods of up to 175 h in Loch Voil, Scotland, during May 1979 and 1980. Activity was predominantly nocturnal, 80% occurring between 21.00 and 06.00 hours, and was apparently undirected. Average velocities during this active interval were 0.6 body lengths per second (bl s−1), with 98 and 93% of the time spent moving at less than 2 and less than 1 bl s−1, respectively. The rates of downstream displacement were 0.04 bl s−1 in 1979 and 0.01 bl s−1 in 1980. The direction of displacement of smolts and of movement of water at a depth of 1 m was positively correlated ( P <0.001) and smolt displacement was biassed slightly ahead of water movement. Mean step lengths were 141 and 200 m in 1979 and 1980, respectively. Rates of downstream passage of 327 ICES plate-tagged smolts released 16.8 km upstream of the fish trap at Clunie dam, Loch Tummel, during the spring migrations of 1975 and 1976 averaged 0.13 bl s−1 in each year: net surface water movement was about 3.7 times this rate during the same intervals. These data are consistent with the model of passive smolt migration postulated by Tytler et al. (1978) and suggest that the active component required to ensure passage through a loch (Thorpe & Morgan, 1978) is very small.  相似文献

Anadromous Atlantic salmon swim-up fry were stocked into a small pond (surface area 4.0 ha; maximum depth 3.6 m; mean depth 1.9m) in urban St John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The outlet from the pond was placed underground about 15 years ago. The growth rate of young salmon in this pond was two to five times as fast as in populations in insular Newfoundland. Females matured after a size at which they should have smolted and emigrated to sea. Growth, fecundity, and egg size of transplanted females are compared with those of the donor stock and with those reported for populations of landlocked salmon in insular Newfoundland. The evolutionary implications of the study are discussed.  相似文献

The post-smolt stage of salmon, Salmo salar L., is subject to heavy mortality in Norway. Each year 35 000 hatchery-reared smolts are stocked in the River Surna. Smolt stocking at sea and in the fjord resulted in recovery rates of adult salmon which were up to three times better than those resulting from river stockings. This was supposed to be due to by-passing some predators. In 1984 and 1985 predators and their predation on smolts were studied in the R. Surna estuary. Cod, Gadus morhua , were found to prey heavily on smolts, and a total mortality up to 24.8% was found in a small restricted area. Cod are thought to assemble in the Surna estuary in the spring, foraging on the smolt run.  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon smolts on exposure to constant concentrations of ammonia has been measured under laboratory conditions. At concentrations of dissolved oxygen close to the air-saturation value, the 24-h LC50 of un-ionised ammonia is 0.15 mg NH31−1 in fresh water (hardness 264 mg 1−1 as CaCO3) and 0.3 mg NH31−1 in 30% sea water; at concentrations of dissolved oxygen of 3.5 mg 1−1 in fresh water and 3.1 mg 1−1 in 30% sea water, the 24-h LC50 is 0.09 mg NH3 1−1 and 0.12 mg NH3 1−1 respectively; for fish acclimated for 1 day to a concentration of ammonia close to the 24-h median for un-acclimated fish, the median is increased between 38 and 79%, depending on test conditions.  相似文献

Seasonal, diel and tidal rhythmic activity of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) smolts migrating through a large estuary was studied by ultrasonic tracking of 46 individuals during two seasons. Prior to 10 May each year most smolts were inactive and remained near shore in shallow water. After 10 May nearly all smolts moved away from the release point into swift water and made rapid seaward progress. Initiation of migration each year occurred when river and hatchery water temperatures rose above 9°C. Migration in the estuary was largely passive drift, and as a result there were distinct tidal rhythms of ground ('swimming') speed and net seaward travel. There were no diel rhythms in ground speed or net seaward travel; smolts drifted seaward on the tides during both day and night. Smolts may be slightly deeper during day than night.  相似文献

The effects of maturation, castration, and androgen implants on growth in 1- and 2-year-old Baltic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) were studied in a stock originating from the Umeälven (Ume river) in northern Sweden. 1 + male parr that later matured were larger than non-maturing parr in the spring. Later in the summer, during the period of gonadal growth, the growth rate of maturing parr was depressed compared to that of non-maturing males. Implantation of capsules with 11-ketoandrostenedione (OA) or testosterone (T) in sexually immature 1-year-old fish, accelerated the specific growth rate in spring and early summer, particularly considering growth in weight, resulting in an increase in the condition factor. In contrast, the growth rate was depressed from late June onwards, the period when the gonads normally develop in 1 + parr. T, but not OA, also promoted sexual maturation. Castration or OA treatment did not affect total summer growth in 2-year-old salmon. This study suggests a causal relationship between androgens and the growth pattern observed in maturing 1 + male parr.  相似文献

The timing of river entry in the Atlantic salmon is known to depend on genetic, demographic and environmental factors, but little is known about the relative magnitude of among population and among year variation and covariation in this respect in natural state Atlantic salmon rives. To investigate this, variability in the timing of river entry in three historical Finnish Atlantic salmon populations were analyzed using salmon trap data collected during 1870-1902.The analyses reveled that 1)the timing of river e...  相似文献

Ranges in the means of blood measurements from 121 Baltic salmon taken on nine occasions spread over an annual cycle were: packed cell volume or haematocrit; blood haemoglobin; red blood cell counts including immature erythrocytes; mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration; mean cellular haemoglobin content and mean cellular volume. Seasonal changes appeared in all blood variables. Ontogenetic differences occurred in RBC and mean cellular volume when comparing 1 + parr with 2 + smolts in August one year apart, and in haemoglobin, RBC and immature RBC when comparing 1 + parr with adults once in November 1976. This points to greater influence upon haematological variation by season than by age. Significant regressions found within age groups, between pairs of mutually independent blood variables, are presented.  相似文献

Summary Mature male parr successfully fertilized eggs of anadromous female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in competition with anadromous males under simulated natural conditions. Mating situations were created in which mature male parr and anadromous males competing for the opportunity to spawn with an anadromous female differed in allelic forms of the same enzyme. Females deposited eggs into a sequence of 3 or 4 eggs nests. The mean proportion of eggs in a redd fertilized by parr increased with increasing numbers of parr present at a redd, reaching 23% at male parr: anadromous male ratios of 20:1. Single male parr fertilized, on average, 5% of the eggs in a redd. The proportion of eggs in an egg nest fertilized by parr also depended upon the order of egg nest construction, such that parr mating success was highest at the initial nest constructed and lowest at the final nest. Parr have relatively high fertilization success for their size when compared with the smaller maturation phenotype of other salmonids.  相似文献

In 1982 and 1983 descending wild Atlantic salmon smolts, Salmo salar L., were caught in a fish-trap at the mouth of the River Imsa. Together with hatchery-reared smolts of the River Imsa strain they were tagged and released at three different sites of the Imsa-Lutsi watercourse: in the Imsa River 1 km above the trap, and in two lakes, 3 and 11 km upstream of the trap. The recapture-rate in the fish-trap decreased with increased migration distance. The hatchery-reared smolts migrated downstream faster than wild smolts. Lake-released smolts were considerably delayed in their downstream migration compared to the river released smolts. The results are discussed in relation to environmental and physiological parameters.  相似文献

The proportion of potential 1-year smolts, their mean length, the mean length of potential 2-year smolts, and the mortality rate in four half-sib families of Atlantic salmon, reared under four contrasted conditions of overhead cover, is shown to be inffuenced primarily by genetic factors (89.9%, 86.1 %, 82.7% and 80.2% of total variance respectively). Variation between families in smolting rate and mortality rate is influenced by both parents, but more by the male than the female. Variation in mean length is influenced almost entirely by the female parent. These results are discussed in relation to previous findings on bimodality of size distribution and inheritance of growth and mortality characteristics in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Emergence pattern and developmental status at emergence of Baltic salmon fry from the Umeälven hatchery stock (63°50'N, 20°25'E) were studied at 6, 10 and 12°C in the laboratory. The number of days and degree days from hatching to 50% emergence decreased exponentially with increasing temperature. Synchronization of emergence increased with temperature. Optimal temperature for incubation of yolk-sac alevins was 10°C, which resulted in the largest fry at emergence and the lowest death rate. Fry kept at 6°C had the lowest mean weight and at 12°C the highest death rate. The fry emerged at an earlier developmental state with more yolk at 12°C than at 6°C. The Baltic salmon had a faster developmental rate during the gravel-phase, as compared to more southern Atlantic salmon populations.  相似文献

Protozoan isolates from the gills of marine-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts were cultured, cloned and 8 dominant isolates were studied in detail. The light and electron-microscopical characters of these isolates were examined, and 7 were identified to the generic level. Structure, ultrastructure, a species-specific immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), and PCR verified the identity of the Neoparamoeba sp. isolate. Five other genera of amoebae, comprising Platyamoeba, Mayorella, Vexillifera, Flabellula, and Nolandella, a scuticociliate of the genus Paranophrys, and a trypanosomatid (tranosomatid-bodonid incertae sedis) accompanied Neoparamoeba sp. in the gills. The pathogenic potential of the isolated organisms, occurring in conjunction with Neoparamoeba sp. in the gills of cultured Atlantic salmon smolts in Ireland, remains to be investigated.  相似文献

The susceptibility of a Baltic salmon stock Salmo salar (Indals?lv, central Sweden) to Norwegian Gyrodactylus salaris (Figga strain, central Norway) was experimentally tested and compared with previously obtained results on East Atlantic salmon (Lierelva, SE Norway). Contrary to expectation, the Baltic salmon, which had no prior exposure to this parasite strain, appeared almost as susceptible as the Norwegian salmon parr that naturally experience G. salaris-induced mortality. Individually isolated salmon of both stocks sustained G. salaris infections with little evidence of innate resistance. A few individuals of the Indals?lv stock controlled their infection from the beginning, but overall there was considerable heterogeneity in the course of infection in both stocks. On individual hosts, G. salaris growth rates declined steadily throughout the infection, a trend which was particularly marked amongst the Lierelva stock. On shoaling Lierelva fish, there was some evidence of reduced parasite population growth towards the end of the infection; this was not apparent in Indals?lv fishes. These results reflect a growing awareness that not all Baltic salmon may be resistant to Norwegian G. salaris, and that Norwegian and Baltic G. salaris strains may differ in virulence. Consequently, management decisions concerning this parasite-host system should be based upon the actual, and tested, susceptibility of stocks under consideration and not upon identification of stocks as either Atlantic or Baltic.  相似文献

The results of three investigations, two with wild smolt and one with hatchery-reared smolt of altic salmon, were analysed with regard to mortality due to predation during river and estuarine migration. This mortality was found to be high, at least 50% of the initial number of smolt was estimated not to reach marine waters. Smolt mortality may be important in population regulation, analoguous to other animal species having the same life strategy with two life stages and a transfer to a new habitat connected to the shift in life stage.  相似文献

The many enigmatic factors in the life cycle of the Atlantic salmon have long fascinated and long frustrated those working on this subject. This comprehensive review by Dr Michael Gardner collates and summarizes the findings of investigations from the turn of the century to the present day. The author also provides an objective assessment of several hypotheses relating to the reasons for the diverse behaviour patterns of the salmon.  相似文献
