The purpose of this study was to examine time-of-day effects on short-term performance in obese young men. In a balanced study design, 30 boys were divided into two groups: obese (OG; n = 15) and non-obese (CG; n = 15) groups. Both groups performed anaerobic tests of strength and power (squat-Jump, SJ; counter-movement jump, CMJ; 10-m sprint; and 30-m sprint) at 08:00 and 17:00 h on separate days. The results showed morning–evening differences in all variables in CG, with significant increases at 17:00 h (around the time of peak temperature) in comparison with 08:00 h (p < 0.01) for OG. However, such morning-evening differences were not found in the OG, except for the 30-m sprint. Obesity affects the diurnal variation on performances of 30-m sprint with a significant decrease in the evening for OG of 1.23% (p < 0.01). A correlation between anaerobic performance and oral temperature was observed only in the 30-m sprint test. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicated that obesity is a problem that can affect circadian rhythms and performance in obese young men; therefore, preventing childhood obesity should become a top priority in efforts to improve performance and health.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the reliability and the time-of-day effect of the 505 change of direction (CoD), 10-m sprint, and change of direction deficit test (CoDD). At two different time of days, 39 young diurnally active physical education male students performed different physical tests: 505 CoD, and sprint tests. Measurements were taken at two separate testing sessions, i.e. in the morning (07:00–08:30 h) and early evening (17:00–18:30 h) in a randomized and counter-balanced setting on nonconsecutive days in 21 of them (21.5 ± 1.5 y of age). The results showed that the 505 CoD test, 10-m sprint, and CoDD performances were a reliable test, and performances were better in the evening the 505 CoD, 10-m sprint, and CoDD testing provided reliable and sensitive scores. In addition, phase 2 showed that CoD, speed, and CoDD are affected by the time of day.  相似文献

A recommended field method to assess body composition in adolescent sprint athletes is currently lacking. Existing methods developed for non-athletic adolescents were not longitudinally validated and do not take maturation status into account. This longitudinal study compared two field methods, i.e., a Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) and a skinfold based equation, with underwater densitometry to track body fat percentage relative to years from age at peak height velocity in adolescent sprint athletes. In this study, adolescent sprint athletes (34 girls, 35 boys) were measured every 6 months during 3 years (age at start = 14.8 ± 1.5yrs in girls and 14.7 ± 1.9yrs in boys). Body fat percentage was estimated in 3 different ways: 1) using BIA with the TANITA TBF 410; 2) using a skinfold based equation; 3) using underwater densitometry which was considered as the reference method. Height for age since birth was used to estimate age at peak height velocity. Cross-sectional analyses were performed using repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlations between measurement methods at each occasion. Data were analyzed longitudinally using a multilevel cross-classified model with the PROC Mixed procedure. In boys, compared to underwater densitometry, the skinfold based formula revealed comparable values for body fatness during the study period whereas BIA showed a different pattern leading to an overestimation of body fatness starting from 4 years after age at peak height velocity. In girls, both the skinfold based formula and BIA overestimated body fatness across the whole range of years from peak height velocity. The skinfold based method appears to give an acceptable estimation of body composition during growth as compared to underwater densitometry in male adolescent sprinters. In girls, caution is warranted when interpreting estimations of body fatness by both BIA and a skinfold based formula since both methods tend to give an overestimation.  相似文献

Interest to investigate daily fluctuations in cognitive tasks, so-called “school-rhythms”, lies in exploring the most favourable time-of-day for learning considering the analysis of variations in performance taking into account individual differences. The aim of this study was to describe daily fluctuations in attention at three different times of the school day, two different days, considering chronotype and three different school start times (08:00, 08:15 and 08:30?h). Participants were 669 adolescents aged 12–16. Sleep length and inductive reasoning were considered as covariates. In general, attention increased throughout the school day, boys reached higher attention than girls and, moreover, evening type boys reached higher attention than evening type girls. No differences between chronotypes were observed. When students were familiar with the task, chronotype, sex and time-of-day interactions seem to be important factors to consider.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify potential correlates of objectively measured physical activity in a sample of obese children. A cross-sectional design was used to assess 137 5-9-year-old obese children (mean +/- s.d. age = 8.3 +/- 1.1 years; mean BMI z-score = 2.76 +/- 0.70; 58% girls) from two regional cities in New South Wales, Australia, before commencement in a treatment trial. Correlates examined included age, BMI z, parental BMI, perceived competence, health-related quality of life, daily minutes spent in small screen recreation (SSR), and fundamental motor skill (FMS) proficiency. Physical activity was assessed using accelerometers and values were calculated for % of monitored time spent in moderate- (MPA) and vigorous (VPA)-intensity physical activity and mean counts per minute (CPM). Analyses were conducted separately for boys and girls. Motor skill proficiency was significantly correlated with a number of physical activity variables for boys and girls. For boys, regression analysis revealed object-control proficiency predicted CPM (R(2) = 0.25) and age was a predictor of %MPA (R(2) = 0.56). Age and object-control skill proficiency were salient predictors of %VPA (R(2) = 0.34). For girls, age and daily minutes of SSR were the only significant predictors for CPM (R(2) = 0.13). Age was the sole predictor of %MPA (R(2) = 0.38) and %VPA (R(2) = 0.15). The targeting of FMSs at an early age should be tested in experimental studies as potential strategies to increase physical activity among obese children, particularly for boys. Interventions aimed at reducing sedentary behaviors among obese girls should also be considered.  相似文献

The 24-hours urinary excretion of immunoreactive prostaglandin F (U-iPGF) in normal children on a free diet was not significantly different in 30 boys (aged 3–15 years; geometric mean 589 ng/24 h) compared to 27 girls (aged 4–14 years; mean 473 ng/24 h). In both sexes this excretion rose with age until adolescence where it reached a plateau. In normal adults the men had significantly higher (p < 0.001) excretions of U-iPGF than the women; also body weight and urinary creatinine excretion were higher in men (p < 0.001).In the children, as well as in the total population, U-iPGF correlated best with body weight (r = 0.44 and r = 0.48 respectively; p < 0.001) and the urinary creatinine excretion (r = 0.53 and 0.57 respectively; p < 0.001); both body weight and urinary creatinine excretion are reflections of total body development. After the correction for urinary creatinine excretion or for body weight, the sex difference in the adult U-iPGF totally disappeared.  相似文献

The aim of this study was (i) to evaluate whether homocysteine (Hcy), total antioxidant status (TAS), and biological markers of muscle injury would be affected by time of day (TOD) in football players and (ii) to establish a relationship between diurnal variation of these biomarkers and the daytime rhythm of power and muscle fatigue during repeated sprint ability (RSA) exercise. In counterbalanced order, 12 football (soccer) players performed an RSA test (5?×?[6 s of maximal cycling sprint?+?24 s of rest]) on two different occasions: 07:00–08:30?h and 17:00–18:30?h. Fasting blood samples were collected from a forearm vein before and 3–5?min after each RSA test. Core temperature, rating of perceived exertion, and performances (i.e., Sprint 1, Sprint 2, and power decrease) during the RSA test were significantly higher at 17:00 than 07:00?h (p?<?.001, p?<?.05, and p?<?.05, respectively). The results also showed significant diurnal variation of resting Hcy levels and all biological markers of muscle injury with acrophases (peak times) observed at 17:00?h. These fluctuations persisted after the RSA test. However, biomarkers of antioxidant status' resting levels (i.e., total antioxidant status, uric acid, and total bilirubin) were higher in the morning. This TOD effect was suppressed after exercise for TAS and uric acid. In conclusion, the present study confirms diurnal variation of Hcy, selected biological markers of cellular damage, and antioxidant status in young football players. Also, the higher performances and muscle fatigue showed in the evening during RSA exercise might be due to higher levels of biological markers of muscle injury and lower antioxidant status at this TOD. BackgroundEnvironmental pollutions with heavy metals may have toxic effects on human health and development. One of the most detrimental is lead exposure, which may disturb neurodevelopment and linear growth in children. However, data on the effect of lead exposure on nutritional and weight status in children are limited, thus this study aimed to assess the effect of blood lead (Pb) level on nutritional and weight status in preadolescent schoolchildren from the industrialized, mining region in southwestern Poland.MethodsOur study sample involved N = 709 schoolchildren (402 boys and 307 girls) in the preadolescent developmental period (7–11 years of age for boys and 7–10 years of age for girls). Anthropometric measurements were used to assess nutritional and weight status: body mass index (BMI), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and skinfolds thicknesses (triceps, subscapular, abdominal and the sum of skinfolds). Blood Pb level was evaluated and divided into two groups: above (>3.7 μg/dL) and below median value (≤3.7 μg/dL).ResultsAnalysis of covariance (with children’s age controlled as a covariate) revealed that children with blood Pb level above median value had significantly lower values of BMI, MUAC and all skinfolds (at least p < 0.01). However, this effect was significant only in boys, whereas in girls differences were non-significant (p > 0.05). The highest effect size of blood Pb level was noted for skinfolds thicknesses (partial η2: 0.015 for the sum of skinfolds).ConclusionsNutritional status in children with higher blood Pb level is significantly impaired in preadolescent boys, who appear to be more sensitive to this environmental factor. Our findings indicate a particular need for nutritional and environmental interventions among preadolescent children in regions with higher lead exposure.  相似文献

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between overweight and physical activity or sedentary time measured by accelerometry in rural boys and girls 7 to 19 years old. Research Methods and Procedures: A cross‐sectional study was conducted involving 130 girls and 99 boys in elementary, middle, and high school in rural Maryland. After weight, height, and body composition were measured, children wore an Actiwatch accelerometer for 6 days. Comparisons for activity counts were made between normal and overweight or at risk for overweight (at‐risk/overweight) participants (≥85th percentile of BMI). The associations between body composition and accelerometry‐defined activity levels (sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous) were analyzed by age group for boys and girls. Results: Differences in total activity in counts per day or counts per minute were not observed between normal and at‐risk/overweight boys or girls in all age groups. No associations between measures of body composition and time spent in an activity level were seen in boys. Fat mass and percentage fat were positively correlated to time spent in sedentary activity (range r = 0.42 to 0.54, all p < 0.01) for girls. In contrast, fat mass and percentage fat were negatively related to time spent in light activity (range, r = ?0.40 to ?0.51, p < 0.05) for girls. Discussion: In girls, but not boys, greater body fat is associated with greater time spent being inactive, and lower levels of body fat are associated with more time spent in light activity. Physical activity interventions targeting inactive children in rural communities are warranted.  相似文献

Objective

To examine the age and sex-specific associations of urine levels of six mono-phthalates with body size and fat distribution in Chinese children at puberty.

Materials and Methods

Four hundred and ninety-three school-aged children (247 boys, 246 girls) were recruited. Obesity related anthropometric indices were measured and body fat proportion (BF%) was calculated. Spot urine samples were collected and phthalate monoesters were detected by an API 2000 electrospray triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (ESI-MS/MS). Associations between phthalate exposure and overweight/obesity measures and their trends were examined by multiple linear regression and Logistic regression analyses, respectively.

Results

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolites and monobutyl phthalate (MBP) were found to be the most detectable chemicals. In 8–10 years (yrs) group, concentrations of MEHP and MBP were significantly higher in girls than those in boys. However, concentrations of all phthalate monoesters, except for MEP and MEHP, in 11–13 yrs boys were significantly higher than those in girls. After adjusting for confounders including puberty onset, urinary concentrations of MBP and sum of low molecular-weight phthalate metabolites (∑LMP) were positively associated with boys'' obesity in a concentration-effect manner, while concentrations of MEHP, MEHHP and sum of DEHP metabolites (∑MEHP) were negatively associated with girls'' obesity. Associations between phthalate exposure levels and BMI z-score changes were age- and sex-specific in school-age children.

Conclusion

There are age and sex-specific concentration-effect associations between phthalate exposure and fat distribution in Chinese children. Urinary phthalate levels in 11–13 yrs boys were about 30 percent higher than those in girls, and ∑MEHP levels in younger boys (<10 yrs) were significantly higher than those in elder boys (>10 yrs). Associations were positive for MBP and ∑LMP with both BMI z-score and fat distribution in boys >10 years of age, and negative for ∑MEHP with fat distribution in girls <10 years of age.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of age of adiposity rebound (AR) on measures of fat mass between ages 7 and 11 years, maturity, and adiposity in 458 children from a birth cohort studied to age 26 years. Patterns of growth between ages 3 and 26 years and changes in fat mass index between 7 and 11 years in groups with early (<5.5 years for boys and <5 years for girls), average (between 5.5 and 7.5 years for boys and between 5 and 7 years for girls), and late AR (≥7.5 years for boys and ≥7 years for girls) are described. The mean z‐scores for BMI, height, and weight increased between age 3 years and adolescence in the early‐rebound group and decreased in the late‐rebound group. The differences were maintained until adulthood for BMI and weight. Disproportionately high increases in fat mass index during growth (7–11 years), more advanced bone age in boys at age 7 years, and earlier menarche in girls were evident in the early‐rebound group. The relative risks at 26 years of being overweight (BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) were 2.70 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.55, 4.66) and 5.91 (95% CI: 3.03, 11.55) respectively, using the average group as the reference. The corresponding relative risks for adult waist girths exceeding international cut points were 2.12 (95% CI: 1.09, 4.13) and 3.32 (95% CI: 1.46, 7.54). Thus, early rebound is associated with increased depositions of fat in middle childhood, and risks associated with early rebound persist at least until early adulthood.  相似文献

Urine samples from children in Sierra Leone (134 boys and 110 girls), were collected during the dry season. During the rainy season samples were collected from 97 boys and 93 girls. Analysis of the dry season samples, revealed that, with the exception of one boy, all children had detectable amounts of aflatoxins and/or ochratoxins in their urine. Similarly, with the exception of four children (two from each sex), rainy season urine samples also contained these two mycotoxins. There were significant differences in the frequency of exposure to some mycotoxins: ochratoxin A (OTA), p < 0.01;4-hydroxyochratoxin A (4R-OTA), p < 0.002; aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), p < 0.04;aflatoxicol (AFL), p < 0.03; aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), p < 0.04 . There were also significant differences in the levels of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), (p < 0.05) and AFB2, (p < 0.02) detected in dry season samples. Stratification of these results according to season and sex, has indicated significant differences with respect to 4R-OTA (p < 0.04) and AFB1 (p < 0.02). The results of this study show that in Sierra Leone, children are frequently and constantly exposed to both aflatoxins and ochratoxins. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

There are limited data on how coordinative sprint drills and maximal short burst activities affects children's sprint and agility performance. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of short burst activities on sprint and agility performance in 11- to 12-year-old boys. A training group (TG) of 14 boys followed a 6-week, 1-hour·week(-1), training program consisting of different short burst competitive sprinting activities. Eleven boys of similar age served as controls (control group [CG]). Pre- and posttests assessed 10-m sprint, 20-m sprint, and agility performance. Results revealed significant performance improvement in all tests within TG (p < 0.05), but not between TG and CG in the 10-m sprint test. Furthermore, the relationships between the performances in straight-line sprint and agility showed a significant transfer effect (r = 0.68-0.75, p < 0.001). Findings from the present study indicate that competitive short burst activities executed with maximal effort may produce improvement in sprint and agility performance in 11- to 12-year-old boys.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine ethnic differences in adiposity as measured by sum of skinfolds (SKF) and waist circumference (WC) in children and adolescents, after statistical adjustment for the BMI and age. A cross sectional sample of 3,218 (55% white, 49% male) children and adolescents aged 5–18 years who participated in the Bogalusa Heart Study (1992–1994) were included in these analyses. Sex‐specific ANOVAs, adjusted for BMI and age, for each 2‐year age group compared measures of adiposity (SKF and WC) between ethnic groups. No significant differences in the proportions of children and adolescents who were overweight and obese by ethnicity or sex were found. Mean SKF in normal weight (P < 0.0001) and overweight (P < 0.0001) categories was higher for white than black children of both sexes. Across most age categories, white boys and girls had significantly higher SKF than black boys and girls, respectively (P ≤ 0.05). Across most age categories, white boys had significantly higher WC than black boys (P ≤ 0.05) with no difference in the girls, when adjusted for BMI and age. Measures of adiposity in childhood and adolescence were significantly higher in white children compared to black children, when adjusted for BMI and age. Throughout childhood and adolescence, white boys and girls had higher SKF and white boys had higher WC. Differences in adiposity between ethnic groups should be considered in disease risk assessment and stratification as they are observed even for a given BMI level.  相似文献

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of 1 vs. 2 sessions per week of equal-volume sprint training on explosive, high-intensity and endurance-intensive performances among young soccer players. Thirty-six young male soccer players were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups that performed either a single weekly sprint training session (ST1, n = 18, age: 17.2 ± 0.8 years) or two weekly sprint training sessions (ST2, n = 18; age: 17.1 ± 0.9 years) of equal weekly and total volume, in addition to their regular soccer training regimen. Linear sprinting (10 m, 20 m, 30 m, and flying 10 m), T-test agility, countermovement jump (CMJ) and maximal oxygen consumption were assessed one week before (T1), in the middle (T2) and immediately after the 10 weeks of training (T3). A large magnitude and statistically significant main effect for time was found in all the assessed variables after both training interventions (all p < 0.001; ES ≥ 0.80). No main effect was observed between the 2 groups at any time in linear sprinting, T-test or CMJ test (p > 0.05; ES < 0.20). A significant interaction effect (F = 4.05; p = 0.04, ES = 0.21) was found for maximal oxygen consumption with ST2 inducing better performance than ST1 (p = 0.001; ES = 1.11). Our findings suggested that the two sprint training frequencies were effective in enhancing explosive, high-intensity and endurance-intensive performances. However, it is recommended for coaches and fitness coaches to use a biweekly sprint training modality as it was found to be more effective in improving endurance-intensive performance.  相似文献

Background

Few studies have explored the trends in central precocious puberty (CPP) in Asian populations. This study assessed the prevalence and annual incidence of CPP among Korean children.

Methods

Using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review Agency from 2004 to 2010, we reviewed the records of 21,351 children, including those registered with a diagnosis of CPP for the first time and those diagnosed with CPP who were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs.

Results

The prevalence of CPP was 55.9 per 100,000 girls and 1.7 per 100,000 boys, respectively. The overall incidence of CPP was 15.3 per 100,000 girls, and 0.6 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls significantly increased from 3.3 to 50.4 per 100,000 girls; whereas in boys, it gradually increased from 0.3 to 1.2 per 100,000 boys. The annual incidence of CPP in girls consistently increased at all ages year by year, with greater increases at older ages (≥6 years of age), and smaller increases in girls aged < 6 years. In contrast, the annual incidence remained relatively constant in boys aged < 8 years, while a small increase was observed only in boys aged 8 years. The increase of annual incidence showed significant differences depending on age and gender (P <0.0001).

Conclusions

The annual incidence of CPP has substantially increased among Korean girls over the past 7 years. Continued monitoring of CPP trends among Korean children will be informative.  相似文献

Background

Several studies have shown that the waist circumference of children and adolescents has increased over the last 25 years. However, given the strong correlation between waist circumference and BMI, it is uncertain if the secular trends in waist circumference are independent of those in BMI.

Methods

We analyzed data from 6- to 19-year-olds who participated in the 1988–1994 through 2011–2012 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to assess whether the trends in waist circumference were independent of changes in BMI, race-ethnicity and age.

Results

Mean, unadjusted levels of waist circumference increased by 3.7 cm (boys) and 6.0 cm (girls) from 1988–94 through 2011–12, while mean BMI levels increased by 1.1 kg/m2 (boys) and 1.6 kg/m2 (girls). Overall, the proportional changes in mean levels of both waist circumference and BMI were fairly similar among boys (5.3%, waist vs. 5.6%, BMI) and girls (8.7%, waist vs. 7.7%, BMI). As assessed by the area under the curve, adjustment for BMI reduced the secular increases in waist circumference by about 75% (boys) and 50% (girls) beyond that attributable to age and race-ethnicity. There was also a race-ethnicity interaction (p < 0.001). Adjustment for BMI reduced the secular trend in waist circumference among non-Hispanic (NH) black children (boys and girls) to a greater extent (about 90%) than among other children.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that among children in the U.S., about 75% (boys) and 50% (girls) of the secular increases in waist circumference since 1988–94 can be accounted for by changes in BMI. The reasons for the larger independent effects among girls and among NH blacks are uncertain.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of electrostimulation strength training (ES) and time-of-day on immune response and anaerobic performances during short-term maximal exercise. In randomized order, 24 active men divided into three groups: MTG (n=8): training times 07:00–08:00h; ETG (n=8): training times 17:00–18:00h; and CG (n=8) and were asked to perform a 30-s Wingate test (i.e. peak (PP), mean (MP)) and strength (1-RM) before (T0) and after four weeks of training (T1) at 08:00h and 18:00h. Our results showed that oral temperature, PP (p<0.05), MP (p<0.05), and Interleukine-6 levels (IL-6) (p<0.001) were significantly higher at 18:00h compared to 08:00h in all groups. However, 1-RM was not affected by the time-of-day (p>0.05). Likewise, IL-6 increased after exercise at T0 and T1 in CG, ETG, and MTG (p<0.001). Moreover, ES training leads an improvement in performances (p<0.05) with an increase in the tight circumference for the MTG (p<0.01) at the same time-of-training (08:00h) without affecting the immune response (p>0.05). In fact, the amplitude of variation was disappeared in MTG after ES. However, the ES did not affect the PP, MP, and 1-RM in ETG with no change in the tight circumference. A significant increase in IL-6 at the same time-of-training (p<0.05) was observed on ETG. For CG, no significant change was observed after ES compared with pre-training. In conclusion, ES training in the morning is a potent strategy to counteract the decrease in anaerobic performances without affecting inflammatory response compared to the evening training.  相似文献

Arm span and standing height were measured in 289 boys and 337 girls aged 6-15 years who were free from physical deformities which can affect stature or arm span. The arm span exceeded height in all age groups of boys and in older girls. At the age of 7, 11 and 12 years girls were significantly taller than the boys and had longer arm span while at the age of 15 years, the trend was opposite. The mean difference between the two anthropometric parameters for boys was 5.45 +/- 4.21 cm (t = 3.556, p < 0.001) and for girls was 4.94 +/- 4.96 cm (t = 3.542, p < 0.001). Correlation coefficient between height and arm span measurements for Malawian boys was 0.983 and for girls was 0.986. Height, arm span and height-arm span difference increased with age of children while height to arm span ratio decreased. The gender difference in height-arm span differences was only significant at the age of 15 years. Multiple regression and cross validation were performed. Height of Malawian children of both sexes can be estimated from equation: Height (cm) = 15.756 + (0.168 x age) + (0.839 x arm span) (SEE = 0.760, R2 = 0.988).  相似文献
