A marked decrease in analytical and post‐analytical variability has been achieved in clinical laboratories by the use of automated analytical systems. Current studies are now focused on the origin of pre‐analytical variability, such as that due to intra‐individual differences and biological rhythms. The objective of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of biological rhythms in several biochemical serum parameters in a Brazilian population. A retrospective study (1996 to 1998) was carried out to collect the test results within the reference intervals of adults, from 21 to 50 yr of age (average age of 36 yr) attending the outpatient clinics of the Teaching Hospital at the University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The reference sample was 52.9% male and 47.1% female and encompassed 15,036 calcium, 7,478 phosphorus, 53,641 urea, 58,315 creatinine and 6,433 uric acid determinations (140,903 in total). Significant annual rhythms were detected in serum calcium (p≤0.001), with maximum and minimum values in fall and spring, and in serum creatinine (p≤0.002), with maximum and minimum values in summer and winter. The other parameters did not present significant annual rhythmicity. The seasonal rhythms present in the serum concentrations of calcium and creatinine observed in this large population study, although of small amplitude, should be considered a component of the pre‐analytical variation of these clinical laboratory tests. 相似文献

Biological nitrogen (N2) fixation performed by diazotrophs (N2 fixing bacteria) is thought to be one of the main sources of plant available N in pristine ecosystems like arctic tundra. However, direct evidence of a transfer of fixed N2 to non-diazotroph associated plants is lacking to date. Here, we present results from an in situ 15N–N2 labelling study in the High Arctic. Three dominant vegetation types (organic crust composed of free-living cyanobacteria, mosses, cotton grass) were subjected to acetylene reduction assays (ARA) performed regularly throughout the growing season, as well as 15N–N2 incubations. The 15N-label was followed into the dominant N2 fixer associations, soil, soil microbial biomass and non-diazotroph associated plants three days and three weeks after labelling. Mosses contributed most to habitat N2 fixation throughout the measuring campaigns, and N2 fixation activity was highest at the beginning of the growing season in all plots. Fixed 15N–N2 became quickly (within 3 days) available to non-diazotroph associated plants in all investigated vegetation types, proving that N2 fixation is an actual source of available N in pristine ecosystems. 相似文献

Although, pelagic Ostracoda are locally abundant component of the mesozooplankton in the waters around Svalbard, the group
remains poorly characterised both taxonomically and ecologically. Herein, the spatial and vertical variations in abundances
and species composition of the pelagic Ostracoda assemblages are examined and related to the water masses. The study is based
on a series of zooplankton samples collected with a multinet plankton sampler (MPS; HydroBios, Kiel), consisting of five nets
fitted with a 180-μm mesh net. Samples were collected from deep stations (i.e., with bottom depths >300 m) around Svalbard
and included localities influenced by the West Spitsbergen Current and the East Spitsbergen Current and to the north of Svalbard,
between years 2001 and 2006. Throughout all the samples studied Discoconchoecia elegans was the numerically dominant species. The other species found were Boroecia maxima, Boroecia borealis, Obtusoecia obtusata, and a rare novel Boroecia species. Analyses of the pelagic Ostracoda assemblages showed that their variability was predominantly influenced by four
factors: water temperature, geographical position, bottom depth and season. The highest densities of D. elegans were correlated with salinities >35 PSU whereas B. maxima distribution was dependent on latitude. Highest concentrations of B. borealis were determined by longitude. Abundances of O. obtusata were positively correlated with warmer water temperatures. Thus this work suggests that halocyprids have the potential to
be good indicators of environmental changes associated with shifts in climate at high latitudes in the North Atlantic. 相似文献

We used ultraviolet radiation dosimeters to investigate human exposure at two polar latitudes with a 24-h photoperiod: at Rothera Station (UK) (67°S) and at a field camp in the Haughton impact structure in the Canadian High Arctic (75°N). Mean personal UV radiation exposure in the Antarctic location was 4.3 times greater than that in the Arctic location, even in the absence of ozone depletion. More than zenith angle accounted for the higher UV exposure. Widespread snow and ice covers, and probably less atmospheric pollution, caused higher personal exposures. Although the mean exposures were higher in the Antarctic location, the mean exposure ratio in the Antarctic (0.20ǂ.09) was similar to the value measured in the Arctic (0.27ǂ.09) on clear days. We use the Antarctic ratio to provide quantitative estimates of UV-radiation exposure for workers at the Geographical South Pole for the winter solstice under a constant 24-h photoperiod. Exposure ratios can be used to translate measurements of UV radiation by horizontally fixed spectroradiometers into estimates of the mean exposures expected in populations at polar latitudes, although variations between individuals are large. The data have implications for determining the UV exposures of indigenous high-latitude populations. 相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of major biochemical features were studied for three abundant egg-diapausing copepods Acartia
bifilosa, Centropages hamatus and Temora longicornis, in the White Sea (66°N), between June 2002 and September 2002. Dry weight (DW) and prosome length varied from 0.54 μg ind−1 and 0.163 ± 0.012 mm (A. bifilosa, CI) to 9.58 ± 0.72 μg ind−1 and 1.135 ± 0.167 mm (C. hamatus, females). Corg and Norg content reached up to 5.91 ± 0.44 and 1.23 ± 0.09 μg ind−1 (C. hamatus, females). Protein and lipid content varied greatly from 31.8 to 67.3% DW and from 8.7 to 42.6% DW, respectively. These species
show somewhat different biology compared to species at lower latitudes. The copepods use lipid stores to survive during short-term
food shortage (e.g. in autumn) and successfully complete their life cycle. In the isolated White Sea during last post-glacial
period, species probably evolved some special biochemical features (especially wax esters presence). Food quality demands
and long ice coverage are possible factors limiting early development of species in spring. 相似文献

Endolichenic fungi within 17 lichen species in the area near Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard, High Arctic) were studied by a culture-based method. The 247 fungal isolates were obtained from 2712 lichen thallus segments. The colonization rate of endolichenic fungi ranged from 1.6 to 26.5 %, respectively. These isolates were identified to 40 fungal taxa, including 35 Ascomycota (10 orders), 4 Basidiomycota (3 orders), and 1 unidentified fungus. Thelebolales was the most abundant order, while Sordariales were the most diverse order. The common fungal taxa shared by more than 3 lichen species were Thelebolus microsporus (93 isolates), Coniochaeta hoffmannii (7 isolates), Sarocladium kiliense (33 isolates), Coniochaeta sp. 1 (5 isolates), Coniochaeta sp. 4 (28 isolates), and Coniochaeta sp. 2 (5 isolates). Low Sorenson’s similarity coefficients were observed among different lichen species, indicating that host-related factor may shape the endolichenic fungal communities in this region. In addition, no endolichenic fungal taxa were previously found in the Antarctica and Austrian Alps, suggesting endolichenic fungal communities in this region might be also shaped by the Arctic climate. The results demonstrate the existence of specific cultured endolichenic fungal species, which may be suitable objects for further study of their possible functional roles in the lichen thalli. 相似文献

Fourier Transform Infrared Radiation (FTIR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful methods for the detection of gaseous constituents, aerosols, and dust in planetary atmospheres. Infrared spectroscopy plays an important role in searching for biomarkers, organics and biological substances in the Universe. The possibility of detection and identifications with FTIR spectrometer of bio-aerosol spores (Bacillus atrophaeus var. globigii=BG) in the atmosphere is discussed in this paper. We describe the results of initial spectral measurements performed in the laboratory and in the field. The purpose of these experiments was to detect and to identify bio-aerosol spores in two conditions: 1) In a closed chamber where the thermal contrast between the background and aerosols was large, and 2) In open air where the thermal contrast between the background and aerosols was small. The extinction spectrum of BG spores was deduced by comparing our measurements with models, and other measurements known from the literature. Our theoretical and experimental studies indicate that, during passive remote sensing measurements, it is difficult-but possible to detect and to identify bio-aerosol clouds by their spectral signatures. The simple spectral analysis described in the paper can be useful for the detection of various kinds of trace aerosols-not only in the Earth's atmosphere, but also during planetary missions in the environments of other astronomical objects such as planets, comets etc. We expect that the interpretation of data from spectrometric sounding of Venus and Mars during the current missions Mars and Venus Express, and later during the Rosetta mission will benefit from our experimental work and numerical modelling. 相似文献

In this study, we explore the relationship between the modern assemblages of organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts and sea-surface conditions (temperature, salinity, primary productivity) and water depth and distance to the coast. Statistical treatments were performed on 95 surface sediment samples from sites located along the south-western Mexican coast (14.76° N to 24.75°N). Redundancy analysis (RDA) illustrates that the principal parameters correlated with the regional cyst distribution are the distance to the coast and the productivity in the upper water column, which is closely related to upwelling intensity. Empirical observations coupled with RDA provide insight into the spatial coverage of some cyst taxa produced by dinoflagellate species potentially responsible for harmful algal blooms along the coast. They also allow the recognition of four zones of assemblages, which are linked to the upwelling intensity and the productivity and characterize La Paz Bay, the south-western Mexican margin (from 15.95° N to 23.11° N), the northern part of the Gulf of Tehuantepec and the southern part of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. 相似文献

Fungal communities play a significant role in regulating ecological processes in the Arctic tundra. However, the extent to which the Arctic moss species and host types (moss, lichen and vascular plant) determine the richness, diversity, and composition of fungal communities at a local scale has not been quantitatively explored. Using 454 pyrosequencing in the current study, we characterized the fungal communities associated with six moss species (Andreaea rupestris, Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Hymenoloma crispulum, Polytrichastrum alpinum, Racomitrium lanuginosum, and Sanionia uncinata) and compared them with fungal communities associated with lichens and vascular plants in the Ny-Ålesund region (High Arctic). Host-species preference had greater explanatory power than geographical factors (longitude, latitude, elevation) in shaping moss-associated fungal communities. Fungal communities associated with mosses differed significantly from those associated with vascular plants and lichens, suggesting specificity of the fungal communities among three host types. Pairwise comparison analysis also indicated that the relative abundance of many taxonomic groups (e.g., Chaetothyriales, Leotiales, Catenulifera, Alatospora, and Toxicocladosporium) significantly differed between mosses and the other two host types. These results suggest host factors significantly affect the distribution of the fungal species associated with these moss species in the local-scale Arctic tundra. 相似文献

Acidification of lakes takes place when pH of rainwater is less than 4.5 and the catchments lie on sensitive geology. Both
conditions are met for most lakes in Bohemia and Slovakia. Since 1978 we have studied mountain lakes in the Sumava and in
the High Tatra Mountains.
In Šumava the three lakes under study are of glacial origin. The catchments are small, with steep sides covered by spruce.
The bedrocks are biotite-rich paragneiss, together with gneiss, quartzite and granite. In summer 1936 surface pH was 5.7–6.9
in the Lake Čertovo and 6.9–7.0 in the Lake Černé. Now the pH values are 4.3–4.8 in the two lakes and in the Lake Prášilské
as well. Old reports on zooplankton are from the years 1871, 1892–96, 1935–37, 1947 and 1960. Since 1979 we have not found
any planktonic Crustacea in the lakes Černé and Čertovo. Lake Prášilské is inhabited by Daphnia longispina and Cyclops abyssorum. In July 1989 the pH values were 4.4, 4.7 and 4.7, concentrations of labile monomeric Al were 0.83, 0.68 and 0.24 mg l-1 in the lakes Čertovo, Černé and Prašilské, respectively. High levels of toxic Al compounds might be responsible for the extinction
of planktonic Crustacea in the lakes Čertovo and Černé. All the three lakes are void of fish at present.
In the High Tatra Mts. we examined more than 40 lakes above timberline in altitudes 1612–2145 m. They are all clearwater,
naturally fishless lakes. The bedrock is granite. Owing to different levels of calcium the lakes are now in different stages
of acidification. According to recent changes in the zooplankton they can be divided into three groups: (1) Species composition
of planktonic Crustacea has not changed. (2) Planktonic Crustacea were present until 1973 but are absent now. (3) From the
original species of Crustacea only Chydorus sphaericus is present.
The three groups are well separated along the gradients of calcium, ANC and pH. They can be identified with the Henriksen's
bicarbonate (our group 1), intermediate (our group 2) and acid (our group 3) lakes. We suppose that in the process of acidification
the lakes of the group (2) have been shifted from oligotrophy to ultraoligotrophy. 相似文献

Ursids (bears) in general, and giant pandas in particular, are highly altricial at birth. The components of bear milks and their changes with time may be uniquely adapted to nourish relatively immature neonates, protect them from pathogens, and support the maturation of neonatal digestive physiology. Serial milk samples collected from three giant pandas in early lactation were subjected to untargeted metabolite profiling and multivariate analysis. Changes in milk metabolites with time after birth were analysed by Principal Component Analysis, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and further supported by Orthogonal Partial Least Square-Discriminant Analysis, revealing three phases of milk maturation: days 1–6 (Phase 1), days 7–20 (Phase 2), and beyond day 20 (Phase 3). While the compositions of Phase 1 milks were essentially indistinguishable among individuals, divergences emerged during the second week of lactation. OPLS regression analysis positioned against the growth rate of one cub tentatively inferred a correlation with changes in the abundance of a trisaccharide, isoglobotriose, previously observed to be a major oligosaccharide in ursid milks. Three artificial milk formulae used to feed giant panda cubs were also analysed, and were found to differ markedly in component content from natural panda milk. These findings have implications for the dependence of the ontogeny of all species of bears, and potentially other members of the Carnivora and beyond, on the complexity and sequential changes in maternal provision of micrometabolites in the immediate period after birth. 相似文献

Many group-living mammals and birds give both contact and distress calls. Contact calls are thought to operate in maintaining group stability and cohesion; distress calls are thought to operate in soliciting help, often from relatives. Here we propose that a single call of black-and-gold howlers (Alouatta caraya) serves both needs, but differently so during ontogeny. We collected data on the contexts of moo calling: on group diameter before, during, and after calling; and on calling rates before and after potentially stressful events or situations. Several relationships suggested a link between moo calling and group cohesion. The highest calling rates were found during travel, when separation is most likely, whereas rates were significantly lower during feeding, a sedentary activity. During periods of moo calling, group spread was significantly greater than normal, and spread decreased significantly after calling began. Moo calls were also given in situations of potential distress. When reluctant to cross an arboreal gap or refused the option of travel on an adult, infants gave moo calls more frequently than just after these predicaments were ended; infants also called more frequently immediately after a behavioral conflict. The moo call apparently has a dual role, in contact and distress, with the signal’s use changing with caller age: both uses may reflect a common underlying motivation of insecurity, as different contexts come to trigger insecurity during development. 相似文献

Distribution and Density of Seals in Pil'tun Bay (Northeastern Sakhalin) in the Summer–Autumn Period
The results of seal counts performed during the summer–autumn period of the years 1999–2001 in Pil'tun Bay from onboard Zodiak motor boats and Mi-8 and Mi-8MTV helicopters have been analyzed. The information is presented on the density of seals in the bay. The heterogeneous distribution pattern of seals in the bay and the presence of intermittent migrations provide favorable conditions for foraging in young animals. 相似文献

Cyanobacteria were a major constituent of phototrophic communities in the lakes, ponds and streams of Bylot Island, in the
Canadian high Arctic. The waters spanned a range of temperatures (1.8–16.8°C in late July), pH regimes (6.2–9.2) and conductivities
(1.5–1700 μS cm−1) but nutrient concentrations were consistently low (< 1 μg dissolved reactive P l−1 at all sites; < 10 μg NO3-N l−1 at most sites). Picoplanktonic species (Synechococcus spp.) were often the numerical dominants in the plankton, and periphytic filamentous species (Oscillatoriaceae) commonly
formed thick (5–50 mm) benthic mats. Bloom-forming species of cyanobacteria were either absent or poorly represented even
in Chla-rich ponds. The total community biomass ranged from 0.1 to 29.8 μg Chla l−1 in the plankton and from 1.1 to 34.8 μg Chla cm−2 in the benthos. The in vivo absorbance characteristics of isolates from these environments indicated a genetically diverse
range of species in each group of Arctic cyanobacteria. Growth versus irradiance relationships were determined for each of
the isolates and similarly revealed large genetic differences (maximum growth rates from 0.17 to 0.61 day−1), even between morphologically identical taxa. A comparison of nutrients, pigment concentrations and species composition
underscores the strong similarities between freshwater ecosystems in the north and south polar zones.

/0) can be recommended as a measure of biological time and, for this purpose, the duration of the minimal mitotic cycle during synchronous cleavage divisions should be determined (in minutes) in various avian species. Based on the preliminary data, one can propose the comparability and similarity of the temporal programs of gastrulation and somitogenesis in the chick embryo and embryos of some fish and amphibians. 相似文献
