During the Italian Antarctic Expedition of 1987–1988 zooplankton was collected in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) by a multinet BIONESS (250-μm or 500-μm net mesh size). The early life history of Pleuragramma antarcticum was described from 268 samples. More than 98% of a total of 34,436 fish larvae belonged to P. antarcticum. The mean relative abundance in the whole area for positive 0 to 150-m hauls was 434 ind./100 m3 (±720 SD). Postlarvae were most abundant and frequent in the samples (99.8%) while low concentrations of juveniles were found (n=67). Length of age group 0 ranged from 8 to 20 mm and age group 1+ were from 36 to 53 mm. Average growth rate over a period of 1 year was 0.08 mm per day. Based on modal values, the mean daily increment of P. antarcticum postlarvae in the period 5 January to 2 February (29 days) was about 0.21 mm. Highest abundances occurred near Cape Washington (mean: 2,108 ind./100 m3) while lower densities were recorded in the northern basin of the self (31 ind./100 m3). Horizontal and vertical distribution patterns in Terra Nova Bay seem to be strictly correlated to hydrographic features and different water masses with highest densities associated with the westward flowing current of the limb of the Antarctic coastal current and southern limb of the Ross Sea Gyre. These currents become part of the clockwise gyre in Terra Nova Bay. More than 62% of the postlarvae were collected in well-stratified warm surface water (0–50 m) near the summertime thermocline (20–70 m). The northern part of Terra Nova Bay seems to represent nursery ground of early stages of P. antarcticum and the presence of permanent polynya could provide favourable food conditions for development of the first stages of life. Differing distribution patterns probably reflect an interaction of various parameters including bathymetry, floating ice shelf, hydrographic features such as currents, local eddies and frontal systems, with P. antarcticum postlarval biology (spawning) and ecology (feeding, horizontal and vertical distribution patterns). The diet of Antarctic silverfish Pleuragramma antarcticum was evaluated by examining stomach contents of specimens collected in the Ross Sea (71°–77° S; 165°–180° E) in January to March 2008. Pleuragramma antarcticum (50–236 mm standard length, LS) and prey items were analysed for stable‐isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen. According to index of relative importance (IRI), which incorporates frequency of occurrence, mass and number of prey items, the most important prey items were copepods (81%IRI over all specimens), predominantly Metridia gerlachei and Paraeuchaeta sp., with krill and fishes having low IRI (2·2 and 5·6%IRI overall). According to mass of prey (M) in stomachs, however, fishes (P. antarcticum and myctophids) and krill dominated overall diet (48 and 22%M, respectively), with copepods being a relatively minor constituent of overall diet by mass (9·9%M). Piscivory by P. antarcticum occurred mainly in the extreme south‐west of the region and near the continental slope. Krill identified to species level in P. antarcticum stomachs were predominantly Euphausia superba (14·1%M) with some Euphausia crystallophorias (4·8%M). Both DistLM modelling (PRIMER‐permanova+) on stomach contents (by IRI) and stepwise generalized linear modelling on stable isotopes showed that LS and location were significant predictors of P. antarcticum diet. Postlarval P. antarcticum (50–89 mm LS) consumed exclusively copepods. Juvenile P. antarcticum (90–151 mm LS) consumed predominantly krill and copepods by mass (46 and 30%M, respectively). Small adult P. antarcticum (152–178 mm LS) consumed krill, fishes and copepods (37, 36 and 15%M, respectively). Large adult P. antarcticum (179–236 mm LS) consumed predominantly fishes and krill (55 and 17%M, respectively), especially in the north (near the Ross Sea slope) and in the SW Ross Sea. Amphipods were occasionally important prey items for P. antarcticum (western Ross Sea, 39%M). General concordance between stomach contents and trophic level of P. antarcticum and prey based on δ15N was demonstrated. Pleuragramma antarcticum trophic level was estimated as 3·7 (postlarval fish) and 4·1 (fish aged 3+ years).  相似文献

The aim of this work is to improve the knowledge of the mollusc fauna of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea), on the basis of more than 100 stations sampled from 25 to 1100 m depth, during Italian Antarctic Expeditions (austral summers 1987/1988, 1989/1990, 1993/1994, 1994/1995, 1995/1996 and 1997/1998). In shallow waters, gastropod fauna is represented by 31 species, among which Neobuccinum eatoni, Onoba gelida, Powellisetia deserta, Philine cf. apertissima and Austrodoris kerguelenensis are the most abundant, while among bivalves (25 species) the commonest species are Adamussium colbecki, Yoldia eightsi, Laternula elliptica and “Montacutanimrodiana. At present, most of the Antarctic mollusc species are known as having circumantarctic distribution and are considered eurybathic. Moreover, in general, only scarce data are available on their substrate preferences, because of their occurrence in scattered sampling stations with different sediment features. In the present study carried out at Terra Nova Bay, based on a relatively high number of stations, a clear zonation of mollusc assemblages is shown, according to depth and sediment features. While gastropods characterise the superficial algal belts dominated by the red algae Iridaea cordata and Phyllophora antarctica, bivalve distribution is wider. Adamussium colbecki is the dominant species in the upper 100 m, both on soft and hard bottoms, if the slope is suitable (density up to 40–60 ind./m2). On coarse sands, this species is frequently accompanied by L. elliptica (density <20 ind./m2), while Y. eightsi characterises organic- enriched bottoms (density 70–80 ind./m2). Below 200 m depth Adacnarca nitens, Limatula hodgsoni, “Montacutanimrodiana and Mysella gibbosa are commonly found on relatively coarse sediments, while Thyasira dearborni and Yoldiella ecaudata prefer muddy bottoms. In order to identify bivalve assemblages, multivariate analyses were applied to stations grouped into depth ranges, sediment features and location. While shallow bathymetric ranges (25–200 m) are clearly defined, deeper clusters of stations are more influenced by the high degree of eurybathy of most of the species and by the scattered distribution of the sediment particle sizes. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the lipolytic activity of cold-adapted Antarctic marine bacteria and, furthermore, the combined effect of some environmental factors on this enzymatic process. METHODS AND RESULTS: Strains were assayed for lipolytic activity on a basal medium amended with seven individual fatty acid esters. A significant activity was observed for 148 isolates (95.5% of the total screened). The interactive effect of pH, temperature and NaCl concentration on the substrates was tested for six representative isolates, identified as Pseudoalteromonas, Psychrobacter and Vibrio. Differences between strains according to NaCl and pH tolerances were observed. Only one strain degraded the substrate more efficiently at 4 degrees C than at 15 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that the lipolytic activity of Antarctic marine bacteria is rather variable, depending on culture conditions, and occurs in a wide range of salt concentration and pH. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Isolation and characterization of bacteria that are able to efficiently remove lipids at low temperatures will provide insight into the possibility to use cold-adapted bacteria as a source of exploitable enzymes. Moreover, research on the interactive effects of salt concentration, pH and temperature will be useful to understand the true enzyme potentialities for industrial applications.  相似文献

One hundred and forty bacteria isolated from Antarctic seawater samples were examined for their ability to inhibit the growth of indigenous isolates and their sensitivity to antibacterial activity expressed by one another. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis, bacterial isolates were assigned to five phylogenetically different taxa, Actinobacteria, alpha and gamma subclasses of Proteobacteria, Bacillaceae, and Bacteroidetes. Twenty-one isolates (15%), predominantly Actinobacteria, exhibited antagonistic properties against marine bacteria of Antarctic origin. Members of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes did not show any inhibitory activity. Differences were observed among inhibition patterns of single isolates, suggesting that their activity was more likely strain-specific rather than dependent on phylogenetic affiliation. A novel analysis based on network theory confirmed these results, showing that the structure of this population is probably robust to perturbations, but also that it depends strongly on the most active strains. The determination of plasmid incidence in the bacterial strains investigated revealed that there was no correlation between their presence and the antagonistic activity. The data presented here provide evidence for the antagonistic interactions within bacterial strains inhabiting Antarctic seawater and suggest the potential exploitation of Antarctic bacteria as a novel source of antibiotics.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of abundance, distribution, temporal changes and species composition of the dominant ice-associated copepods in the spring annual pack ice, platelet ice and water column at Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, during late spring 1997. Ice cores were drilled for temporal and spatial scales. Stephos longipes and Harpacticus furcifer dominated the sea ice meiofauna in terms of numbers in the lower few centimeters of the bottom ice associated with high chlorophyll a and phaeopigment levels. Nauplii dominated the S. longipes population (91.6%) and occurred in extremely high concentrations. In contrast, copepodids were the dominant stages in H. furcifer. How H. furcifer carries out its entire life cycle and how it differs from ecologically similar species such as Drescheriella glacialis should be examined in more detail.  相似文献

The shallow-water hydrozoan Antarctic fauna is still poorly studied, and available knowledge mostly refers to samples gathered by traditional ship-operated gears. By scuba diving in the coastal areas off the Italian Antarctic station “Mario Zucchelli” (Ross Sea, Terra Nova Bay), in the austral summer 2002–2003, a total of 20 hydrozoan species were found, belonging to 10 families and 13 genera. As hypothesized, Anthoathecata (11 species), usually under-represented in collections from indirect sampling gears, are common as also are Leptothecata (9 species). Hydractiniidae and Hydractinia are the dominant family and genus, followed by Haleciidae and Halecium. A new species to science, Halecium exaggeratum sp. nov. is also described. Most species are either endemic to Antarctic waters or restricted to Antarctic/sub-Antarctic areas; only two species have a wider distribution. Material reared in aquaria at the Italian Antarctic Base Mario Zucchelli facilitated knowledge of the life cycle and reproductive biology of several species. In particular, Opercularella belgicae was found to liberate a medusa stage referable to Phialella, and the species is assigned here to that genus, as Phialella belgicae. Also, extraordinary is the complete absence or scant representation of the most typical Antarctic benthic hydroid genera (Antarctoscyphus, Oswaldella, Schizotricha, Staurotheca, and Symplectoscyphus), likely related to the shallow limits of sampling (down to 48 m).  相似文献

We illustrate the spatial and vertical distribution of sediment phytopigments and organic matter biochemical composition at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) during summer 1995. Coastal sediments displayed high phytopigments concentrations associated with huge amounts of labile organic matter largely dominated by proteins. This result was opposite to previous observations in the same area. Such comparison suggested that whilst organic matter quantity in the sediments depended upon the vertical input from the water column, temporal changes in its biochemical composition were related to benthic processes. As considerably high concentrations of biopolymeric organic carbon were found even at 6-cm depth and according to the “loss type” functioning of the coastal waters of the Ross Sea, we stress the summer time occurrence in coastal sediments of an important organic matter burial. Summary The early life history of Pleuragramma antarcticum off the Antarctic Peninsula is described from extensive material collected during four expeditions between 1975/76 and 1982 by means of an RMT 1+8. Postlarvae occurred frequently on the northern continental shelf in February and March except during the 1977/78 season when they were almost absent. Abundance varied mainly between 1.8 and 14.7 postlarvae per 103 m3 with maxima between 32.6 and 143.3 per 103 m3. Juveniles were less abundant with 0.1–4.9 and maxima between 9.8 and 28.3 per 103 m3, but formed a consistent, predominant proportion (83–97%) of the pelagic juvenile fish fauna throughout the years of the study. They were distributed over the whole Bransfield Strait and adjacent waters in the top 200 m. Postlarvae and juveniles showed different patterns of vertical distribution; more than 70% of postlarvae occurred in the top 135 m of the water column whereas 83% of juveniles were encountered between 70 and 200 m with increasing abundance towards the lower depth. Three length groups were identified corresponding to age groups 0, 1, and 2. Hatching was estimated to occur in December. Postlarval distribution patterns and the prevailing transport of water masses suggest that coastal waters south of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and in the north-eastern Bellingshausen Sea are probable spawning areas. The Bransfield Strait and adjacent waters represent nursery grounds for the early stages of P. antarcticum from these sites.  相似文献

Adamussium colbecki is one of the most well-studied Antarctic molluscs. However, information on its growth rate is currently based on estimates from mark and recapture experiments and from growth-ring analyses. This paper provides the first estimates of the growth pattern of this scallop throughout a year, for individuals maintained under both natural field and laboratory conditions. Results show size-related differences in growth rate, both in the field and in aquaria, with scallops in Terra Nova Bay growing faster than those kept in aquaria. Growth performances were lower than those reported in the literature.  相似文献

The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m–3 to 5968.9 ind m–3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m–3 to 3965.3 ind m–3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m–3 to 13.04 mg m–3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g–1dry weight.  相似文献

Although echinoderms constitute some of the most conspicuous taxa of the Antarctic benthic communities, the echinoderm fauna of Terra Nova has not been described yet. The present study provides the first species list of echinoids, ophiuroids and asteroids from Terra Nova Bay (30–500 m depth) and describes the depth distribution of these species. Preliminary observations of the summer reproductive condition of some of the species are also included.  相似文献

Body size, geographical distribution, and biomass make Adamussium colbecki (Smith, 1902) one of the most conspicuous bivalve species in the Antarctic. Based on samples collected in austral summer 1999/2000 in Terra Nova Bay, the annual formation of shell growth bands visible on X-ray photographs was verified by stable isotope analysis. A general von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to size-at-age data of 25 individuals (H=108.86 mm, K=0.114 year−1, t0=−0.367, D=1.284). Somatic production calculated from mass-specific growth rates was 234.6 kJ m−2 year−1. Gonadal productivity amounted to 70.92 kJ m−2 year−1. Annual somatic and gonad production-to-biomass ratios (P/B) were 0.199 and 0.052, respectively. According to its consumption and production, A. colbecki is likely to play a significant role in the trophic web of Terra Nova Bay.  相似文献

Species of the genus Trematomus are the most common nototheniids in the High-Antarctic Zone, and several live sympatrically on the Ross Sea continental shelf. Histological analysis of gonadal development of T. bernacchii, T. hansoni and T. newnesi was carried out on samples collected during the austral summer in the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay, western Ross Sea. Gonads of both females and males of the three species were described based on macroscopic and histologic scales. Histologically, both males and females of T. bernacchii were in postspawning or in early maturing condition, thus indicating that they recently completed spawning. Conversely, most specimens of T. hansoni were in spawning condition, as evidenced by the histological appearance of gonads and by the high value of gonado-somatic index (GSI) of females between 20 and 36%. In the same period, females of T. newnesi had maturing ovaries, whereas males were at an early developmental stage of maturity. In all species, the testicular structure closely resembled the unrestricted spermatogonial type, although spermatogonia were more concentrated in the blind end of tubules. On the basis of the pattern of oocyte maturity observed within the ovarian lamellae, all Trematomus had a group synchronous ovary, as commonly reported in Antarctic fish. Furthermore, the presence of oocytes showing the commencement of yolk deposition in spent females confirms that vitellogenesis is a slow process, extending over at least 1 year. The reproductive strategies of Trematomus are discussed in terms of timing of the spawning season of each species as a function of the seasonal production cycle and of the interspecific relationships. The spawning activities of the three species investigated appeared to be mismatched with respect to time as well as location within the range of distribution of each.  相似文献

Benthic-pelagic coupling processes were studied in Adelie Cove, a small 70-m deep V-shaped bay, located on the coast of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea). This cove is set apart from the open sea by a 12- to 15-m deep sill. Samplings were carried out over 20 days in summer 1997/1998 in the water column, in the sediment and in material collected from the sea-bottom interface by means of a sediment trap. Benthic communities were studied mainly using ROV video tapes. The complex and peculiar interactions between physical, chemical and biological processes, both in the water column and in the sediments, were tightly linked to a katabatic wind pattern, which is the main constraint in water mass circulation. A clear evolution in organic matter distribution and composition was observed. These processes led to a high build-up of materials in the sediments in the deepest part of the cove, which favoured deposit-feeding species and largely contributed to the organic enrichment of the sediments.  相似文献

Polygordius antarcticus sp. nov. is described from benthic material collected at depths ranging between 31 and 61 m in Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, during the 1987–1988 and 1988–1989 expeditions of the Italian National Research Program in Antarctica. This is the first named species of the genus from Antarctic waters. Although no fully mature specimens were available, the new species appears unique in combining the following features: a regular pygidium, inflated and with a single ring of round adhesive pads, a conical prostomium with short antennae (only half as long as the prostomium) and shallow head fold, and a well-developed circulatory apparatus, with circumoesophageal commissures entering the prostomium and long intersegmental commissures insinuating into the ventrolateral compartments of the trunk. These and other significant features were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. In the construction of the head and the scheme of the blood system, the new species resembles Polygordius triestinus Woltereck, described by Hempelmann in 1906, an aberrant species inhabiting muddy, anoxic sediments in the Adriatic Sea, but it differs significantly from it in the shape of the mouth (in P. triestinus the upper lip is hypertrophied and strongly protruding) and the pygidium (in P. triestinus this region is stump-like and non-adhesive). The pygidium of P. antarcticus sp. nov. is encircled by 28–30 small adhesive pads, each with 15–20 glandular openings. Preterminal cirri are lacking, as are perianal appendages. The anus is surrounded by six to seven lobes of which the midventral is largest and longest. A world distribution map of the genus is provided. Accepted: 27 August 1998  相似文献

A set of 146 Antarctic marine isolates from the Ross Sea was characterized by a combination of molecular techniques in order to determine the degree of inter- and intraspecific variability. Isolates were analyzed by amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) using the tetrameric enzyme AluI, resulting in 52 different groups, corresponding to at least 52 different bacterial species, indicating a high degree of interspecific variability. The phylogenetic position of bacteria belonging to some ARDRA groups was obtained by sequencing of 16S rDNA. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, carried out on the largest ARDRA groups, revealed a high intraspecific genetic variability, too. The analysis of plasmid content revealed the existence of horizontal gene transfer between strains belonging to the same and to different species. A comparison of the whole body of morphological, physiological and biochemical data was finally carried out.  相似文献

Diatoms have been long collected from the Southern Ocean but almost no data exist for epiphytic communities, despite their high ecological significance as an important food source in Antarctic coastal food chains. Here, we present a first growth form analysis of diatoms associated with rhodophyte hosts from Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica. We performed this study to gather baseline information on the species composition of epiphytic diatom communities, determine the influence of some environmental variables on the diatom distribution patterns, and assess the caveats that must be taken into account in terms of sampling design. Macroalgal material was collected during the Italian Antarctic expeditions between 1990 and 2004. Epiphytic diatoms were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. In terms of growth forms, there were no significant differences between the diatom communities on the different macroalgal host species. Motile (mainly small-celled Navicula perminuta and other Navicula spp.) and adnate (Cocconeis spp.) diatoms dominated the community throughout the study period. Many of the macroalgal blades examined were also covered by epiphytic animals (calcareous bryozoans, hydroids) over most of their surface, with a significant effect on the associated diatom community structure. Our findings suggest that the bio-physicochemical characteristics of each sampling site affected the epiphytic diatom communities more than the substrate type provided by the macroalgal host or the sampling depth.  相似文献

We studied the role of oval faecal pellets in the carbon-cycle dynamics of the Antarctic coastal area in a laboratory experiment on pellet degradation over time. We observed a rapid increase in the bacterial biomass until 56 h (from 14.73 to 91.09 µgC/l), but a drop to 25.83 µgC/l at the end of the experiment. Dissolved proteins decreased rapidly (from 1,342.7 to 1,177.0 µg/l in the first 32 h) as did nitrate (from 1 to 0.43 µm in the first 56 h), confirming their consumption by microorganisms, but they were observed to increase in the second part of the experiment, up to 1,618.3 µg/l and 17.36 µm for the dissolved proteins and nitrate, respectively. The proteolytic activity increased throughout the incubation from 302.65 nmol/l per hour to 6,641.08 nmol/l per hour, especially in the second half of the experiment. Therefore, we concluded that the microbial community is able to produce, consume and remineralise the available organic substrates and to increase organic-pool quality and inorganic nutrient concentrations dissolved in the overlying water.  相似文献
