For evolution and maintenance of the social system of insect colonies, investment in the sterile caste should be adequately controlled in response to environmental cues. Recent developments using artificial diet rearing techniques have revealed an underlying mechanism of caste control in a gall-forming aphid, Tuberaphis styraci, which has a soldier caste in the second instar. Statistical analyses of field-collected galls detected a significant positive correlation between aphid density and soldier proportion in the natural colonies of T. styraci. Artificial diet experiments showed that soldiers are produced under crowded conditions. Detailed experiments demonstrated that soldiers are produced in a density-dependent manner rather than in a colony size-dependent manner. From these results, it was concluded that aphid density is the crucial cue that triggers soldier production in T. styraci. This study provides, to our knowledge, the first experimental demonstration of an environmental factor involved in aphid soldier differentiation.  相似文献

Tuberaphis styraci is a social aphid that produces 2nd instar soldiers with morphological, behavioral and reproductive division. High aphid density was shown to induce soldier production in T. styraci, although direct cue of soldier induction associated with high density has been unknown. In order to identify the proximate environmental cue underlying the density-dependent soldier production, a series of experiments was conducted using an artificial diet rearing technique. When adult aphids were reared with live normal nymphs, live soldiers, dead normal nymphs, shed skins, honeydew globules and excreted wax, only live normal nymphs effectively induced soldier production. In order to gain insights into the nature of soldier-inducing cue associated with normal aphids, we performed artificial diet experiments using partitioned and non-partitioned chambers, in which direct contact between aphids was either inhibited or allowed. Induction of soldiers was observed only when direct contact was allowed. Therefore, it was shown that the soldier-inducing cue is neither volatile in the air nor diffusible through the diet, but is transmitted between normal non-soldier aphids via direct contact. On the basis of these results, we suggest that the soldier-inducing cue might be physical stimulus combined with non-volatile surface chemicals whose properties differ between normal aphids and soldiers.  相似文献

Summary: The reproductive characteristics of the soldier-producing aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola were studied in Kagoshima, Southern Japan, to know the factors affecting soldier production of eusocial aphids. The soldier proportion in aphid colonies was highest from October to November. In some large colonies, soldiers were observed in all seasons except in July when colony size was relatively small. Multiple regression analysis showed that the colony size was a principal factor affecting soldier proportion throughout a year. Other social or environmental factors such as aphid composition, host plant conditions and predator abundance were not always significant. Rearing experiments revealed that large colonies (̿,000 individuals) produced soldiers in almost all seasons while small colonies (<1,000) never produced any soldiers. The caste-production schedule of adult females was examined in the field. When solitary females produced both castes, they usually produced normal nymphs first and then soldiers. Females from large colonies tended to produce more soldiers in the earlier period of their lifetime, whereas females from newly established small colonies produced no or only a few soldiers at later times. The average number of soldiers and normal nymphs produced consecutively by a single female was >10 and >20, respectively. Because they have a small number of ovarioles (<15 on average), females should alter caste production within the same ovarioles according to changes in environmental conditions. Artificial removal or introduction of predators and reduction of colony size did not affect soldier production over two successive generations, revealing maternal effects on soldier production. Females cannot shift caste production quickly in response to changes in predator abundance and colony size. This is probably due to early developmental determination of castes within the mother's body.  相似文献

In social insects, local interactions among colony members facilitate information transfer, and allow the whole colony to regulate division of labor and task allocation in an integrated and coordinated manner. In particular, regulation of caste differentiation in response to external cues is important for sustaining social insect colonies. The social aphid Tuberaphis styraci exhibits a caste polyphenism, producing second‐instar soldiers and non‐soldiers. Previous studies using an artificial diet rearing system identified high aphid density as a crucial cue for soldier production, which acts on embryos in the maternal body and newborn first‐instar nymphs to induce soldier differentiation. While direct contact stimuli from live non‐soldiers were suggested to mediate the density effect, how the aphids perceive the stimuli has been unknown. Here we investigated how antennal removal of adult females affects the soldier production in T. styraci. Under a high density condition, intact females produced the highest percentage of soldiers, females deprived of both antennae produced the lowest percentage of soldiers, and females deprived of one antenna exhibited an intermediate percentage of soldiers. Scanning electron microscopic observations of the aphids revealed the existence of sensory organs for chemoreception and tactile sensation on the antennae of the mother aphids. These results indicate that T. styraci females use their antennae to perceive soldier‐inducing density cue, suggesting that maternal perception of density cue is involved in regulation over caste phenotype of their offspring.  相似文献

In termites the evolution of reproductive altruism is not based on a particularly high relatedness between nestmates. For the evolution and maintenance of the ancestral sterile soldier caste, the benefits generated by the soldiers' presence must compensate the loss of the soldiers' reproductive potential. To study the impact of soldiers on colony's fitness, we manipulated the proportion of soldiers to nonsoldiers in colonies of the dry-wood termite Cryptotermes secundus.'Soldier-less' colonies were obtained by removing soldiers and inhibiting their development with an extract of soldier heads. The colonies were set up for 1 year in experimental nests in the field. 'Soldier-less' colonies produced fewer soldiers. The reduction of soldiers neither affected colony survival nor helper growth, but fewer dispersing sexuals were produced in 'soldier-less' than in control colonies. This confirms what was only supposed so far, that in termites soldiers are maintained for their intrinsic benefit to cost ratio.  相似文献

The control of caste formation in the harvester termiteHodotermes mossambicus (Hagen) was investigated.Normal laboratory colonies contained a primary reproductive pair, between 6.59 and 24.98% workers, 0.39 and 3.45% soldiers and 74.64 and 92.06% larvae. Supplementary reproductives did not develop in colonies deprived of their king and queen. Continuous removal of soldiers stimulated soldier production. We have suggested that a pheromone produced by the soldiers plays a major role in controlling the soldier population of a colony. A similar phermone system appreared to control the production of workers.Evidence was also obtained that the primary reproductive pair influenced the production of workers and soldiers.  相似文献

Illuminating the genetic relationships within soldier-producing aphid colonies is an essential element of any attempt to explain the evolution of the altruistic soldier caste. Pemphigus spyrothecae is a soldier-producing aphid that induces galls on the leaf petioles of its host (trees of the genus Populus). At least a quarter of the aphids within the clonally produced gall population are morphologically and behaviourally distinct first-instar soldiers that defend the gall population from predation. Using field trapping and microsatellites, we investigated the degree of clonal mixing within natural gall populations. Field trapping in the UK showed that all the migrants of P. spyrothecae and of two other Pemphigus species were wingless first-instar soldiers. The average degree of mixing estimated from trapping P. spyrothecae migrants was 0.68% (range = 0-15%). Microsatellite genotyping of 277 aphids from 13 galls collected in Italy revealed an average mixing level of 10.4% (range = 0-59%). Six galls contained more than one clone (range = 2-5 clones). Non-kin aphids were not restricted to the soldier caste but were evenly distributed across instars. An additional gall, from which 527 occupants were genotyped, contained 12 non-kin aphids distributed among nine clones, showing that clonal diversity can be high even when mixing is very low. These observations suggest that although soldiers migrate regularly and can moult and reproduce within foreign galls, clonal mixing in this species is generally low and is unlikely to provide a barrier to the evolution of investment by the aphid clones in an altruistic soldier caste.  相似文献

A complete understanding of the evolution of sociality in aphids requires a detailed knowledge of the patterns of soldier investment in their ecology. The eusocial bamboo aphidPseudoregma bambucicola has a morphologically specialized first-instar soldier caste. The proportion of soldiers was positively correlated with colony size. Within a colony, soldiers were evenly distributed among subcolonies; within each subcolony, however, their distribution was biased toward peripheries which were exposed to many predators. Field experiments introducing natural enemies such asEupeodes confrater (Diptera: Syrphidae) andSynonycha grandis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) revealed that the survival rate of these predators was negatively correlated with the density of soldiers, suggesting that soldiers can more or less defend their colonies by killing or removing a range of natural enemies. Observations suggest that large mature colonies attract more predators than newly established small colonies and that, within a colony, the predators attack each subcolony regardless of its position on bamboo shoots. This implies the presence of a positive correlation between colony size and predation risk. Thus, the investment in soldiers seems to reflect the attacking pattern of predators within a colony. These results agree with the defence-optimization hypothesis in soldier investment ofP. bambucicola colonies.  相似文献

The discovery of a sterile soldier caste in aphids by Shigeyuki Aoki offered behavioural ecologists new and interesting subjects for the study of insect sociality. Quantitative studies on the behaviour of soldiers and the population and genetic consequences are, however, scant. This review summarizes the distribution and peculiarities of sterile soldiers in different aphid taxa and also reports on phenomena that may relate to the evolution of aphid soldiers.  相似文献

In the ant Pheidole bicarinata, adult soldiers suppress the induction of soldier developments in larvae that have been treated with methoprene, as well as in acetone-treated controls. Induction of soldier development is inhibited in methoprene-treated larvae when the adult soldiers are present as nurses, when they are present in the colony but minor workers serve as nurses, and when they are held in a minor worker-permeable cage to prevent them from contacting larvae. Suppression of soldier determination can be overridden by high doses of methoprene applied during the juvenile hormone-sensitive period for soldier determination. The degree of suppression increases with increasing contact between larvae and adult soldiers. The most likely mechanism of inhibition is a contact soldier pheromone. On the basis of our results, we expand our model of soldier determination to accommodate the fact that the threshold titre of juvenile hormone necessary to induce soldier development changes in the presence of soldiers. A threshold that is sensitive to the presence of adult soldiers provides a mechanism whereby the worker caste ratio in colonies can be regulated.  相似文献

The proportion of sterile soldiers in an aphid colony is positively correlated with colony size. Assuming logistic growth of the aphid colony, Aoki and Kurosu (Insect Soc 50:256–261, 2003) presented an inequality that determines, for any colony size, whether a soldier or a reproductive will be added to the colony. To put it in words, if the marginal defensive efficacy of a soldier, multiplied by the number of reproductives, is larger than the mean productivity of reproductives without defense by that soldier, the soldier will be produced; if not, a reproductive will be produced. Based on Aoki and Kurosus inequality, we carried out simulations to determine whether the proportion of soldiers increased with colony size. Given a constant level of depredation per aphid and a constant number of predators, proportion of soldiers continued to increase with colony size unless a single soldier was very effective or unless carrying capacity was very large. Given a constant number of nongluttonous predators and a decreasing level of depredation per aphid, proportion of soldiers soon began to decrease after a peak. However, given an increasing number of nongluttonous predators to keep a constant level of depredation per aphid, proportion of soldiers again continued to increase. These results confirmed the argument that the proportion of soldiers can increase with colony size under a wide range of realistic assumptions.  相似文献

In a finite environment, population growth can lead to crowding, increased densities and stress. Termites live in highly organized societies and densities can increase astronomically as colonies grow. However, little is known about juvenile hormone (JH) changes in these insects as numbers increase, despite the fact that JH is a critical caste regulator in this insect. Using Formosan subterranean termites as a model, we evaluated minimum group size requirements for soldier differentiation and the effect of density (50, 100, 500, and 1000 individuals/experimental unit) on worker JH titers either with or without initial soldiers being present. The minimum group size investigation indicated that groups initiated with 5 workers were insufficient for soldier differentiation. Soldiers were produced in groups initiated with 10 or more workers. As density increased from 50 to 1000 individuals per experimental unit, worker JH levels were elevated. Presence of soldiers lessened the effect of density on rising worker JH titers, indicating that soldiers have the ability to down-regulate worker JH. The study provides direct evidence of a population density effect on JH in eusocial insects and sheds light on understanding of the regulatory mechanisms associated with termite soldier caste differentiation.  相似文献

The regulation of caste differentiation is essential to insect eusociality. Termite soldiers are sterile and cannot eat by themselves because they have specialized mouth morphology. Almost all termite species have a soldier caste, and the soldier ratio per colony is maintained at a low level, probably by elaborate regulatory mechanisms. Although the soldier presence is considered to negatively affect soldier differentiation in all examined species, the detailed mechanism remains unclear. Presoldier differentiation can be induced artificially by juvenile hormone (JH) application to workers, showing that JH is a key factor underlying the regulation of soldier differentiation. In this study, to elucidate physiological changes in workers because of the soldier presence during the molt into presoldiers, JH III applications and JH titer quantifications were carried out in the rhinotermitid termite Reticulitermes speratus. Firstly, the effects of soldier presence before the molt into presoldiers induced by JH III application to workers were investigated. The rates of presoldier molt induced by the treatments with soldiers were significantly lower than those without soldiers. Secondly, worker JH titers in the presence or absence of soldiers were quantified by LC-MS on day 0, 5, 10, and 15 after JH application. Results indicated that the worker JH titers (endogenous + applied JH III) in the presence of soldiers were significantly lower than those without soldiers on day 5 after the JH treatment. On days 10 and 15, such soldier effects were not observed. Finally, the effective duration of soldier presence after the JH application was elucidated. A 4 day period of co-existence with soldiers suppressed presoldier differentiation, suggesting that the soldier presence rapidly decreased the JH titer in other colony members (i.e., workers), resulting in the inhibition of presoldier production.  相似文献

Within the gall-inducing thrips of Australia, genus Kladothrips, is a single origin of a soldier caste. A subsequent radiation has led to at least seven social species, and two species that are likely to have independently lost the soldier caste. Both losses of soldiers are connected to a shift in the insects’ host plant. A third inferred host shift is correlated with life history changes in a species with soldiers, K. intermedius, which might suggest this defensive caste may be in transition. The soldiers of this species have variable wing lengths that overlap with that of the flight-capable dispersers. Our study was designed to assess the possibility that some soldiers in this species retain the ability to disperse by wing. A morphological assessment shows that a proportion of soldiers have body dimensions and wing lengths that fall within the range of dispersers, with males more so than females. However, longer wing length in soldiers (sample of primarily females) did not correspond with a disperser like walking behaviour. Furthermore, histological sections suggest that wing muscles of soldiers are deteriorated or absent, which is similar to what was observed in their foundress mothers. The presence of long wings did not correspond with being flight capable in this caste.  相似文献

Investment in soldier production in eusocial lineages involves a trade‐off between maintenance costs and defense benefits. Termites are eusocial insects that live in colonies organized into three castes: primary reproductives, soldiers, and workers or pseudergates. Neotermes chilensis (Blanchard) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) is a one‐piece nesting termite that nests and forages in a single piece of wood. Two scenarios may be of importance in a defense context of one‐piece nesting termites: during swarms, when colonies may be invaded by winged termites (alates) in search of a place to found a new colony, and when colonies of conspecifics are present within the same substrate. It was hypothesized that the ratio of soldiers to non‐soldiers would be higher at the onset of the swarming period and in substrates bearing more than one termite colony. A method based on X‐ray computed tomography (CT) was developed to study gallery connectivity in colonies of N. chilensis and caste composition within colonies. Computed tomography allowed the digital reconstruction of the galleries within the substrate, even when they belonged to different colonies, and was effective in distinguishing termites from substrate, and soldiers from reproductives and pseudergates. Using CT, the ratio of soldiers to non‐soldiers was shown to be highest in colonies within multicolonial scapes (i.e., neighboring colonies were present in the same substrate) during the swarming season, thus supporting our initial hypotheses. These results constitute a unique example of induced defenses arising from intraspecific interactions in termites.  相似文献

Background  

Strict regulation of caste differentiation, at the molecular level, is thought to be important to maintain social structure in insect societies. Previously, a number of extrinsic and intrinsic factors have been shown to influence caste composition in termite colonies. One important factor is the influence of nestmates; in particular, soldier termites are known to inhibit hormone-dependent worker-to-soldier differentiation. However, soldier influences on nestmates at the molecular level are virtually unknown. Here, to test the hypothesis that soldiers can influence nestmate gene expression, we investigated the impact of four treatments on whole-body gene expression in totipotent Reticulitermes flavipes workers: (i) juvenile hormone III (JHIII; a morphogenetic hormone), (ii) soldier head extracts (SHE), (iii) JHIII+SHE, and (iv) live soldiers.  相似文献

The ontogeny of the soldier caste in Prorhinotermes simplex is studied with emphasis on the instar origin of soldiers, the duration of the presoldier stage, and changes in external anatomy during the soldier morphogenesis. The soldiers of different instar origin are compared morphometrically and by analysis of the soldier defensive secretion. The soldiers were found to develop from larvae of the second up to the eighth instar, via a short (13–17 days) presoldier stage. The early soldier instars were found exclusively in incipient colonies while the mature colony contains late instar soldiers only. The abrupt change in the external anatomy occurs in two steps. During the larva-presoldier moult, the head increases in length but only slightly in width. During the presoldier-soldier moult, both the length and width of the head increase markedly and the typical cordate shape is attained; the relative size of the pronotum increases considerably. The long falcate mandibles develop mainly during the larva-presoldier moult. One antennal segment is added during these two moults. With increasing instar age of soldiers a relative increase of the pronotum and the head size in its posterior region was observed. No functional differences in external anatomy were found among the six soldier instars. The composition of the frontal gland secretion is similar in the six soldier instars, an extraordinarily high amount of a defensive substance, (E)-1-nitropentadecene, was detected together with (Z,E)-α-farnesene, presumably an alarm substance. The strategy of soldier production is discussed. We conclude that the observed patterns of soldier production in P. simplex correspond well to its ecological strategy of an advanced single-site nester able to migrate and form foraging groups. The efficient investment of resources is often the route to ecological success, and the adaptability of resource investment may play a critical role in promoting biodiversity. The ants of the “hyperdiverse” genus Pheidole produce two discrete sterile castes, soldiers and minor workers. Within Pheidole, there is tremendous interspecific variation in proportion of soldiers. The causes and correlates of caste ratio variation among species of Pheidole remain enigmatic. Here we test whether a body size threshold model accounts for interspecific variation in caste ratio in Pheidole, such that species with larger body sizes produce relatively fewer soldiers within their colonies. We evaluated the caste ratio of 26 species of Pheidole and found that the body size of workers accounts for interspecific variation in the production of soldiers as we predicted. Twelve species sampled from one forest in Costa Rica yielded the same relationship as found in previously published data from many localities. We conclude that production of soldiers in the most species-rich group of ants is regulated by a body size threshold mechanism, and that the great variation in body size and caste ratio in Pheidole plays a role in niche divergence in this rapidly evolving taxon.  相似文献

To understand the developmental process of aphid soldier differentiation, we investigated the morphological characters of normal nymphs, soldier nymphs and developing embryos of Pseudoregma bambucicola. Results of morphometric analyses showed that normal and soldier nymphs formed discrete clusters on the basis of several morphological characters, although a small number of intermediate individuals, termed ‘intercaste nymphs’, were present. In late embryonic stages, normal and soldier embryos were morphologically distinguishable. The earlier the embryonic stage, the smaller the morphological differences between them. In early embryos less than 1000 µm in length, normal and soldier embryos were not morphologically distinguishable, suggesting that the onset of soldier differentiation occurs at an early embryonic stage. Throughout embryonic development, morphological differentiation of the soldier caste proceeded gradually. Notably, several morphological characters of soldiers grew remarkably upon larviposition. Observation of embryonic leg cuticle revealed a characteristic folding structure, indicating that some morphological traits of the soldier are exaggerated upon larviposition through expansion of the folded cuticle. We suggest that morphological differentiation of the soldier caste in P. bambucicola comprises two phases: gradual growth during embryogenesis and rapid growth upon larviposition.  相似文献
