Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment may increase plant growth more than the uptake of chemical elements from soil. Increased CO2 also may alter element levels in biomass from multi-species vegetation by changing plant species abundances. We measured concentrations of ten elements in aboveground tissues of three C4 grasses that had been exposed for 2–3 growing seasons to a continuous gradient in CO2 from 250 to 500 μmol mol−1. The grasses, Bouteloua curtipendula, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Sorghastrum nutans, are competitive dominants in assemblages of tallgrass prairie vegetation growing on each of three soil types along a field CO2 gradient in central Texas, USA. Our objective was to determine whether CO2 influences element concentrations in grass mixtures by changing concentrations in individual species or shifting species abundances. Increased CO2 had little effect on element concentrations in grasses compared to differences observed among grass species and soils. Increasing CO2 from the pre-Industrial to elevated levels reduced the phosphorus concentration in grasses grown on a clay and sandy loam soil. Concentrations of most other elements did not respond to CO2 treatment. Cover of the mid-grass Bouteloua declined at higher CO2 levels as cover of the taller grass Sorghastrum increased. Concentrations of several elements were lower in Bouteloua than Sorghastrum; hence, this exchange of species at higher CO2 increased element concentrations in grass assemblages. Potential consequences include an improvement in the nutritional quality of plants for herbivores. Results highlight the underappreciated impact that CO2 enrichment may have on ecosystem functioning by changing plant composition.  相似文献

It is expected that elevated CO2 levels may have an important positive effect on the dominance of woody plants over grasses in savannas and grasslands. I propose that these changes in the relative abundance of trees and shrubs over grasses may be explained by Tilman’s resource ratio models. This change will occur because C3 trees will have higher net photosynthetic rates than C4 grasses which predominate in savannas. This will cause trees to have higher growth rates than grasses. An additional factor in trees and shrubs with carbon-based defences (such as tannins or other polyphenols) is that they may be better defended and, thus, lose less material to herbivory. Consequently, trees and shrubs should invade savannas and grasslands because their R* values will be lower. I compare this model to another less parsimonious model based on fire and carbon storage and allocation. Although these models are not necessarily mutually exclusive, the resource ratio model may be differentiated from the fire-carbon model on the basis of the presence of fire and/or the sensitivity to elevations in global CO2 levels.  相似文献

African grasses, introduced into Neotropical savannas to improve forage quality, have spread successfully and displaced native plants. To understand their competitive relationships, we compared biomass production and allocation, plant architecture and phenology, net photosynthesis (Pn), water relations, and nutrient content under fire and simulated herbivory between two C4 grasses, the native Trachypogon plumosus and the introduced Hyparrhenia rufa from a seasonal savanna in Venezuela. All variables were strongly influenced by the rainfall regime. Hyparrhenia produced bigger plants (in mass and size) with a large proportion of mass (>75%) allocated to leaves and culms. Its biomass production was more affected by fire than by defoliation. In contrast, Trachypogon was more affected by defoliation than by fire which promoted a flush of leaf growth even in the dry season. Fire caused up to 85% mortality in Hyparrhenia but none in Trachypogon where it increased inflorescence production. However, fire promoted abundant seed germination and fast seedling growth in Hyparrhenia, enabling it to colonize new areas. During the growing season Trachypogon had higher Pn and lower leaf water potential (Ψ) than Hyparrhenia but differences among treatments were not significant for either grass. Pn of Trachypogon ceased at a lower Ψ (−3.0 MPa) than in Hyparrhenia (−2.0 MPa), indicating its higher tolerance to water stress. During the dry season, Trachypogon leaves remained alive and retained low Pn. Leaf nutrient content was higher during the rainy season in both species. Differences in Pn could not explain the higher seasonal biomass production of Hyparrhenia. However, its water stress evasion strategy, larger biomass allocated to leaves, abundant germination and fast seedling growth appeared to be responsible for the success of Hyparrhenia as an invader of Neotropical savannas. Rates of soil respiration (CO2 effluxes), subsurface pore gas CO2/O2 concentrations, soil temperature and soil water content were measured for 15 months in two temperate and contrasting Danish forest ecosystems: beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.). Soil CO2 effluxes showed a distinct seasonal trend in the range of 0.48–3.3 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for beech and 0.50–2.92 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for spruce and were well-correlated with near-surface soil temperatures. The soil organic C-stock (upper 1 m including the O-horizon) was higher in the spruce stand (184±23 Mg C ha−1) compared to the beech stand (93±19 Mg C ha−1) and resulted in a faster turnover time as calculated by mass/flux in soil beneath the beech stand (28 years) compared to spruce stand (60 years). Observed soil CO2 concentrations and effluxes were simulated using a Fickian diffusion-reaction model based on vertical CO2 production rates and soil diffusivity. Temporal trends were simulated on the basis of observed trends in the distribution of soil water, temperature, and live roots as well as temperature and water content sensitivity functions. These functions were established based on controlled laboratory incubation experiments. The model was successfully validated against observed soil CO2 effluxes and concentrations and revealed that temporal trends generally could be linked to variations in subsurface CO2 production rates and diffusion over time and with depths. However, periods with exceptionally high CO2 effluxes (> 20 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) were noted in March 2000 in relation to drying after heavy rain and after the removal of snow from collars. Both cases were considered non-steady state and could not be simulated.  相似文献

Termites produce methane (CH4) as a by-product of microbial metabolism of food in their hindguts, and are one of the most uncertain components of the regional and global CH4 exchange estimates. This study was conducted at Howard Springs near Darwin, and presents the first estimate of CH4 emissions from termites based on replicated in situ seasonal flux measurements in Australian savannas. Using measured fluxes of CH4 between termite mounds and the atmosphere, and between soil and the atmosphere across seasons we determined net CH4 flux within a tropical savanna woodland of northern Australia. By accounting for both mound-building and subterranean termite colony types, and estimating the contribution from tree-dwelling colonies it was calculated that termites were a CH4 source of +0.24 kg CH4-C ha−1 y−1 and soils were a CH4 sink of −1.14 kg CH4-C ha−1 y−1. Termites offset 21% of CH4 consumed by soil resulting in net sink strength of −0.90 kg CH4-C ha−1 y−1 for these savannas. For Microcerotermes nervosus (Hill), the most abundant mound-building termite species at this site, mound basal area explained 48% of the variation in mound CH4 flux. CH4 emissions from termites offset 0.1% of the net biome productivity (NBP) and CH4 consumption by soil adds 0.5% to the NBP of these tropical savannas at Howard Springs.  相似文献

Plant–plant interactions can be a complex mixture of positive and negative interactions, with the net outcome depending on abiotic and community contexts. In savanna systems, the effects of large herbivores on tree–grass interactions have rarely been studied experimentally, though these herbivores are major players in these systems. In African savannas, trees often become more abundant under heavy cattle grazing but less abundant in wildlife preserves. Woody encroachment where cattle have replaced wild herbivores may be caused by a shift in the competitive balance between trees and grasses. Here we report the results of an experiment designed to quantify the positive, negative, and net effects of grasses, wild herbivores, and cattle on Acacia saplings in a Kenyan savanna. Acacia drepanolobium saplings under four long-term herbivore regimes (wild herbivores, cattle, cattle + wild herbivores, and no large herbivores) were cleared of surrounding grass or left with the surrounding grass intact. After two years, grass-removal saplings exhibited 86% more browse damage than control saplings, suggesting that grass benefited saplings by protecting them from herbivory. However, the negative effect of grass on saplings was far greater; grass-removal trees accrued more than twice the total stem length of control trees. Where wild herbivores were present, saplings were browsed more and produced more new stem growth. Thus, the net effect of wild herbivores was positive, possibly due to the indirect effects of lower competitor tree density in areas accessible to elephants. Additionally, colonization of saplings by symbiotic ants tracked growth patterns, and colonized saplings experienced lower rates of browse damage. These results suggest that savanna tree growth and woody encroachment cannot be predicted by grass cover or herbivore type alone. Rather, tree growth appears to depend on a variety of factors that may be acting together or antagonistically at different stages of the tree’s life cycle.  相似文献

The effects of salinity (sea water at 0 ‰ versus 30 ‰) on gross rates of O2 evolution (J O2) and net rates of CO2 uptake (P N) were measured in the halotolerant estuarine C4 grasses Spartina patens, S. alterniflora, S. densiflora, and Distichlis spicata in controlled growth environments. Under high irradiance, salinity had no significant effect on the intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration ratio (C i/C a). However, during photosynthesis under limiting irradiance, the maximum quantum efficiency of CO2 fixation decreased under salinity across species, suggesting there is increased leakage of the CO2 delivered to the bundle sheath cells by the C4 pump. Growth under salinity did not affect the maximum intrinsic efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (FV/FM) in these species, suggesting salinity had no effect on photosynthesis by inactivation of PS2 reaction centers. Under saline conditions and high irradiance, P N was reduced by 75 % in Spartina patens and S. alterniflora, whereas salinity had no effect on P N in S. densiflora or D. spicata. This inhibition of P N in S. patens and S. alterniflora was not due to an effect on stomatal conductance since the ratio of C i/C a did not decrease under saline conditions. In growth with and without salt, P N was saturated at ∼500 μmol(quantum) m−2 s−1 while J O2 continued to increase up to full sunlight, indicating that carbon assimilation was not tightly coupled to photochemistry in these halophytic species. This increase in alternative electron flow under high irradiance might be an inherent function in these halophytes for dissipating excess energy.  相似文献

We combined measurements of short-term (during gas exchange) and long-term (from plant dry matter) carbon isotope discrimination to estimate CO2 leakiness from bundle sheath cells in six C4 species (three grasses and three dicots) as a function of leaf insertion level, growth temperature and short-term irradiance. The two methods for determining leakiness yielded similar results (P > 0.05) for all species except Setaria macrostachya, which may be explained by the leaf of this species not being accommodating to gas exchange. Leaf insertion level had no effect on leakiness. At the highest growth temperature (36°C) leakiness was lower than at the two lower growth temperatures (16°C and 26°C), between which no differences in leakiness were apparent. Higher irradiance decreased leakiness in three species, while it had no significant effect on the others (there was an opposite trend in two species). The inverse response to increasing irradiance was most marked in the two NAD-ME dicots (both Amaranthus species), which both showed almost 50% leakiness at low light (300 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) compared to about 30% at high light (1,600 μmol quanta m−2 s−1). NADP-ME subtype grasses had lower leakiness than NAD-ME dicots. Although there were exceptions, particularly in the effect of irradiance on leakiness in Sorghum and Boerhavia, we conclude that conditions favourable to C4 photosynthesis (high temperature and high light) lead to a reduction in leakiness.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of season-long exposure of Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and/or ozone (O3) on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content, activities of IAA oxidase (IAAO) and peroxidase (POD) in needles. Trees grown in open-top chambers (OTC) were exposed to control (ambient O3, 55 nmol mol−1 + ambient CO2, 350 μmol mol−1, CK), elevated CO2 (ambient O3 + high CO2, 700 μmol mol−1, EC) and elevated O3 (high O3, 80 ± 8 nmol mol−1 + ambient CO2, EO) OTCs from 1 June to 30 September. Plants grown in elevated CO2 OTC had a growth increase of axial shoot and needle length, compared to control, by 20% and 10% respectively, while the growth in elevated O3 OTC was 43% and 7% less respectively, than control. An increase in IAA content and POD activity and decrease in IAAO activity were observed in trees exposed to elevated CO2 concentration compared with control. Elevated O3 decreased IAA content and had no significant effect on IAAO activity, but significantly increased POD activity. When trees pre-exposed to elevated CO2 were transferred to elevated O3 (EC–EO) or trees pre-exposed to elevated O3 were transferred to elevated CO2 (EO–EC), IAA content was lower while IAAO activity was higher than that transferred to CK (EC–CK or EO–CK), the change in IAA content was also related to IAAO activity. The results indicated that IAAO and POD activities in Chinese pine needles may be affected by the changes in the atmospheric environment, resulting in the change of IAA metabolism which in turn may cause changes in Chinese pine’s growth. The increasing CO2 concentration in Earths atmosphere is expected to cause a greater decline in the nutritional quality of C3 than C4 plants. As a compensatory response, herbivorous insects may increase their feeding disproportionately on C3 plants. These hypotheses were tested by growing the grasses Lolium multiflorum C3) and Bouteloua curtipendula C4) at ambient (370 ppm) and elevated (740 ppm) CO2 levels in open top chambers in the field, and comparing the growth and digestive efficiencies of the generalist grasshopper Melanoplus sanguinipes on each of the four plant × CO2 treatment combinations. As expected, the nutritional quality of the C3 grass declined to a greater extent than did that of the C4 grass at elevated CO2; protein levels declined in the C3 grass, while levels of carbohydrates (sugar, fructan and starch) increased. However, M. sanguinipes did not significantly increase its consumption rate to compensate for the lower nutritional quality of the C3 grass grown under elevated CO2. Instead, these grasshoppers appear to use post-ingestive mechanisms to maintain their growth rates on the C3 grass under elevated CO2. Consumption rates of the C3 and C4 grasses were also similar, demonstrating a lack of compensatory feeding on the C4 grass. We also examined the relative efficiencies of nutrient utilization from a C3 and C4 grass by M. sanguinipes to test the basis for the C4 plant avoidance hypothesis. Contrary to this hypothesis, neither protein nor sugar was digested with a lower efficiency from the C4 grass than from the C3 grass. A novel finding of this study is that fructan, a potentially large carbohydrate source in C3 grasses, is utilized by grasshoppers. Based on the higher nutrient levels in the C3 grass and the better growth performance of M. sanguinipes on this grass at both CO2 levels, we conclude that C3 grasses are likely to remain better host plants than C4 grasses in future CO2 conditions.  相似文献

This work aimed to evaluate if gas exchange and PSII photochemical activity in maize are affected by different irradiance levels during short-term exposure to elevated CO2. For this purpose gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured on maize plants grown at ambient CO2 concentration (control CO2) and exposed for 4 h to short-term treatments at 800 μmol(CO2) mol−1 (high CO2) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of either 1,000 μmol m−2 s−1 (control light) or 1,900 μmol m−2 s−1 (high light). At control light, high-CO2 leaves showed a significant decrease of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and a rise in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) and water-use efficiency (WUE) compared to control CO2 leaves. No difference between CO2 concentrations for PSII effective photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qp) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was detected. Under high light, high-CO2 leaves did not differ in P N, C i/C a, ΦPSII and NPQ, but showed an increase of WUE. These results suggest that at control light photosynthetic apparatus is negatively affected by high CO2 concentration in terms of carbon gain by limitations in photosynthetic dark reaction rather than in photochemistry. At high light, the elevated CO2 concentration did not promote an increase of photosynthesis and photochemistry but only an improvement of water balance due to increased WUE.  相似文献

Symbiotic dinoflagellates of the species Amphidinium are expected to be pharmaceutically useful microalgae because they produce antitumor macrolides. A microalgae production system with a large number of cells at a high density has been developed for the efficient production of macrolide compounds. In the present study, the effects of culture conditions on the cellular growth rate of dinoflagellates were investigated to determine the optimum culture conditions for obtaining high yields of microalgae. Amphidinium species was cultured under conditions with six temperature levels (21–35°C), six levels of photosynthetic photon flux density (15–70 μmol photons m−2 s−1), three levels of CO2 concentration (0.02–0.1%), and three levels of O2 concentration (0.2–21%). The number of cells cultured in a certain volume of solution was monitored microscopically and the cellular growth rate was expressed as the specific growth rate. The maximum specific growth rate was 0.022 h−1 at a temperature of 26°C and O2 concentration of 5%, and the specific growth rate was saturated at a CO2 concentration of 0.05%, a photosynthetic photon flux density of 35 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and a photoperiod of 12 h day−1 upon increasing each environmental parameter. The results demonstrate that Amphidinium species can multiply efficiently under conditions of relatively low light intensity and low O2 concentration.  相似文献

The establishment of non-native species and the increase in atmospheric CO2, in combination, have the ability to alter current ecosystems. Previous studies have shown that invasive species tend to respond more strongly to CO2 than natives, but these comparisons have been of different and unrelated species. To assess how response to CO2 might be related to invasiveness per se, we compared a native (Typha latifolia) with a congeneric invasive (Typha angustifolia), as well as their hybrid (T. × glauca). All three taxa are common components of wetland vegetation, often occurring in near monocultures. An open-top chamber experiment was used to examine the effects of elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations on the three taxa. All three increased rhizome biomass by 40% in elevated CO2. Although the absolute increase did not differ among taxa, the invasive T. angustifolia had a much higher proportional response in biomass and photosynthetic rate (45 and 40% respectively). The weaker response of the two larger taxa native T. latifolia (16 and 2%) and hybrid T. × glauca (−4% and −1%) was possibly driven by soil nutrient deficiency, such that they were not able to benefit from increased CO2. However, under low nutrients the smaller species T. angustifolia may become more a problematic invader in the future.  相似文献

In Venezuela, the alien grasses Melinis minutiflora Beauv. and Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees.) Stapf tend to displace the native savanna plant community dominated by Trachypogon plumosus (Humb. and Bonpl.) Nees. This occurs in either relatively wetter and fertile highland savannas or in drier and less fertile lowland savannas. Although the native and aliens are perennial C4 grasses, higher net assimilation leaf biomass per plant and germination rate of the latter are some causes for their higher growth rates and for their competitive success. The objective of this study is to compare seasonal tissue energy, N, P and K concentrations and the calculated construction costs (CC) between the native grass and either one of the alien grasses from lowland and highland savannas. We predict that, in order to out-compete native plants, alien grasses should be more efficient in resource use as evidenced by lower tissue energy and nutrient concentrations and CC.Tissue energy and nutrient concentration were measured throughout the year and compared between M. minutiflora and the co-occurring local population of T. plumosus in a highland savanna and between H. rufa and its neighbor local population of T. plumosus in a lowland savanna. CC was calculated from energy, N and ash concentrations considering ammonium as the sole N source. Differences between co-occurring species, T. plumosus populations, seasons, and organs were analyzed with ANOVA.Highland and lowland grasses differed in concentration and allocation of energy and nutrients whereas the differences between alien and native grasses were specific for each pair considered. Highland grasses had higher energy, N, P and CC than lowland grasses. These variables were always lowest in the culms. In the more stressed lowland site, tissue energy and nutrient concentrations decreased significantly during the dry season except in the roots of both grasses which had the highest energy and nutrients concentrations during the drought. This seasonal response was more marked in the local lowland population of T. plumosus in which maximum CC alternated seasonally between leaves and roots. Energy and nutrient concentrations and CC were the lowest in H. rufa. In the lowland savannas, the higher efficiency of resource use in the invader grass contributes to its higher competitive success through increased growth rate. In the highlands, overall tissue energy concentration and CC, but not N nor P concentration, were lower in the fast growing M. minutiflora but seasonal differences were lacking. The higher leaf CC in T. plumosus can be attributed to the higher proportion of sclerenchyma tissue which is more expensive to construct. Considering CC, both fast growing alien grasses are more efficient in resource use than the co-occurring native grass. However, the role of CC explaining the competitive success of the former, through higher growth rates, is more evident in the more stressful environment of the lowland savanna.  相似文献

This paper focuses on modelling the growth rate and exopolysaccharides production of Anabaena sp. ATCC 33047, to be used in carbon dioxide removal and biofuels production. For this, the influence of dilution rate, irradiance and aeration rate on the biomass and exopolysaccharides productivity, as well as on the CO2 fixation rate, have been studied. The productivity of the cultures was maximum at the highest irradiance and dilution rate assayed, resulting to 0.5 gbio l−1 day−1 and 0.2 geps l−1 day−1, and the CO2 fixation rate measured was 1.0 gCO2 l−1 day−1. The results showed that although Anabaena sp. was partially photo-inhibited at irradiances higher than 1,300 μE m−2 s−1, its growth rate increases hyperbolically with the average irradiance inside the culture, and so does the specific exopolysaccharides production rate. The latter, on the other hand, decreases under high external irradiances, indicating that the exopolysaccharides metabolism hindered by photo-damage. Mathematical models that consider these phenomena have been proposed. Regarding aeration, the yield of the cultures decreased at rates over 0.5 v/v/min or when shear rates were higher than 60 s−1, demonstrating the existence of thus existence of stress damage by aeration. The behaviour of the cultures has been verified outdoors in a pilot-scale airlift tubular photobioreactor. From this study it is concluded that Anabaena sp. is highly recommended to transform CO2 into valuable products as has been proved capable of metabolizing carbon dioxide at rates of 1.2 gCO2 l−1 day−1 outdoors. The adequacy of the proposed equations is demonstrated, resulting to a useful tool in the design and operation of photobioreactors using this strain.  相似文献

Although recent studies have addressed the effects of phosphorus (P) deficiency on nodule O2 permeability, little attention has been given to the relationship between nodule P status and nodule permeability. To study these traits, four recombinant inbred lines, namely RILs 34, 83, 115, 147 and one local variety (Concesa) of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) were inoculated with RhM11 (a native rhizobial strain from Haouz area of Marrakesh), and grown in hydroaeroponic culture under P-sufficiency (250 μmol P plant−1 week−1) versus P-deficiency (75 μmol P plant−1 week−1) conditions. At the flowering stage, the biomass of plants and nodules and their P contents was determined after measuring O2 uptake by nodulated roots (Conr) and nodule conductance to O2 diffusion (gn). The results showed that P-deficiency significantly decreased plant growth and nodulation, though there were differences between bean genotypes. P-deficiency also induced a decrease in nodule P content (31%) in both sensitive (83, 147) and tolerant lines (34, 115), a 42 and 27% reduction in shoots of sensitive and tolerant lines, respectively. These decreases were associated with significant variations in nodule surface and O2 permeability among bean genotypes and P-nutrition. Under P-deficiency, gn increased more for the sensitive (39%) than for the tolerant lines (27%). This increase was linked with a rise both in the P levels in nodules and shoots, as well as in the efficiency of symbiotic nitrogen fixation as determined by nodule-dependent biomass production for the sensitive lines. Furthermore, positive correlations were found between O2 permeability, gn and P content both in nodules and shoots (r 2 = 0.94** and r 2 = 0.96**). We conclude that nodule variations in Conr and gn are related to nodule P content, and may contribute to the adaptation of energy metabolism in N2-fixing bean nodules to P-deficiency.  相似文献

In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under controlled conditions and subjected to drought by withholding watering, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of attached leaves decreased as leaf water potential (Ψw) declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. Although g s decreased over the whole range of Ψw, nearly constant values in the intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i) were observed as Ψw decreased to −1.8 MPa, but C i increased as Ψw decreased further. Relative quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased with water deficit, whereas non-photochemical quenching (qNP) increased progressively. A highly significant negative relationship between qNP and ATP content was observed. Water deficit did not alter the pyridine nucleotide concentration but decreased ATP content suggesting metabolic impairment. At a photon flux density of 550 μmol m−2 s−1, the allocation of electrons from photosystem (PS) 2 to O2 reduction was increased by 51 %, while the allocation to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 32 %, as Ψw declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. A significant linear relationship between mean P N and the rate of total linear electron transport was observed in well watered plants, the correlation becoming curvilinear when water deficit increased. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 was not affected by water deficit, whereas qP declined only at very severe stress and the excess photon energy was dissipated by increasing qNP indicating that a greater proportion of the energy was thermally dissipated. This accounted for the apparent down-regulation of PS2 and supported the protective role of qNP against photoinhibition in sunflower.  相似文献

CO2 efflux from soil and snow surfaces was measured continuously in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) forest in central Japan using an open dynamic chamber system. The chamber opens and closes automatically and records measurements based on an open-flow dynamic method. Between May and December, mean soil CO2 efflux ranged from 1,529 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 in September to 255 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 in December. The seasonal change in CO2 efflux from the soil paralleled the seasonal pattern of soil temperature. No marked diurnal trends in soil CO2 efflux were observed on days without rainfall, whereas significant pulses in soil CO2 efflux were observed on days with rainfall. In this plantation, soil CO2 efflux frequently responded to rainfall. Measurements of changes from litter-covered soil to snow-covered surfaces revealed that CO2 efflux decreased from values of ca. 250 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 above soil to less than 33 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 above snow. Soil temperature alone explained 66% of the overall variation in soil CO2 efflux, but explained approximately 85% of the variation when data from two anomalous periods were excluded. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between soil CO2 efflux and soil moisture (which explained 44% of the overall variation) using a second-order polynomial function. Our results suggest that the seasonality of CO2 efflux is affected not only by soil temperature and moisture, but also by drying and rewetting cycles and by litterfall pulses.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of the tropical tree species Acacia nigrescens Oliv. grown at different atmospheric CO2 concentrations—from sub-ambient to super-ambient—have been studied. Light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis (A sat) in A. nigrescens, measured after 120 days exposure, increased significantly from sub-ambient (196 μL L−1) to current ambient (386 μL L−1) CO2 growth conditions but did not increase any further as [CO2] became super-ambient (597 μL L−1). Examination of photosynthetic CO2 response curves, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf thickness showed that this acclimation was most likely caused by reduction in Rubisco activity and a shift towards ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration-limited photosynthesis, but not a consequence of changes in mesophyll conductance. Also, measurements of the maximum efficiency of PSII and the carotenoid to chlorophyll ratio of leaves indicated that it was unlikely that the pattern of A sat seen was a consequence of growth [CO2] induced stress. Many of the photosynthetic responses examined were not linear with respect to the concentration of CO2 but could be explained by current models of photosynthesis.  相似文献

In a combined field and laboratory study in the southwest of Burkina Faso, we quantified soil-atmosphere N2O and NO exchange. N2O emissions were measured during two field campaigns throughout the growing seasons 2005 and 2006 at five different experimental sites, that is, a natural savanna site and four agricultural sites planted with sorghum (n = 2), cotton and peanut. The agricultural fields were not irrigated and not fertilized. Although N2O exchange mostly fluctuated between −2 and 8 μg N2O–N m−2 h−1, peak N2O emissions of 10–35 μg N2O–N m−2 h−1 during the second half of June 2005, and up to 150 μg N2O–N m−2 h−1 at the onset of the rainy season 2006, were observed at the native savanna site, whereas the effect of the first rain event on N2O emissions at the crop sites was low or even not detectable. Additionally, a fertilizer experiment was conducted at a sorghum field that was divided into three plots receiving different amounts of N fertilizer (plot A: 140 kg N ha−1; plot B: 52.5 kg N ha−1; plot C: control). During the first 3 weeks after fertilization, only a minor increase in N2O emissions at the two fertilized plots was detected. After 24 days, however, N2O emission rates increased exponentially at plot A up to a mean of 80 μg N2O–N m−2 h−1, whereas daily mean values at plot B reached only 19 μg N2O–N m−2 h−1, whereas N2O flux rates at plot C remained unchanged. The calculated annual N2O emission of the nature reserve site amounted to 0.52 kg N2O–N ha−1 a−1 in 2005 and to 0.67 kg N2O–N ha−1 a−1 in 2006, whereas the calculated average annual N2O release of the crop sites was only 0.19 kg N2O–N ha−1 a−1 and 0.20 kg N2O–N ha−1 a−1 in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In a laboratory study, potential N2O and NO formation under different soil moisture regimes were determined. Single wetting of dry soil to medium soil water content with subsequent drying caused the highest increase in N2O and NO emissions with maximum fluxes occurring 1 day after wetting. The stimulating effect lasted for 3–4 days. A weaker stimulation of N2O and NO fluxes was detected during daily wetting of soil to medium water content, whereas no significant stimulating effect of single or daily wetting to high soil water content (>67% WHCmax) was observed. This study demonstrates that the impact of land-use change in West African savanna on N trace gas emissions is smaller—with the caveat that there could have been potentially higher N2O and NO emissions during the initial conversion—than the effect of timing and distribution of rainfall and of the likely increase in nitrogen fertilization in the future.  相似文献
