Disturbance is a key factor shaping species abundance and diversity in plant communities. Here, we use a mechanistic model of vegetation diversity to show that different strengths of r- and K-selection result in different disturbance-diversity relationships. R- and K-selection constrain the range of viable species through the colonization-competition tradeoff, with strong r-selection favoring colonizers and strong K-selection favoring competitors, but the level of disturbance also affects the success of species. This interplay among r- and K-selection and disturbance results in different shapes of disturbance-diversity relationships, with little variation of diversity with no r- and no K-selection, a decrease in diversity with r-selection with disturbance rate, an increase in diversity with K-selection, and a peak at intermediate values with strong r- and K-selection. We conclude that different disturbance-diversity relationships found in observations may reflect different intensities of r- and K-selection within communities, which should be inferable from broader observations of community composition and their ecophysiological trait ranges.  相似文献

Populations of Acanthoscelides obtectus were maintained for 7 generations in either low- or high-larval densities in order to examine whether weevils life-history traits are modified in the direction predicted by r/K-selection theory. We found that r-selected population had a higher total fecundity, earlier age at first and last reproduction, and higher intrinsic rate of growth than K-selected population. Contrary to the theory, we have no evidence that preadult developmental time and adult longevity have been molded by density-dependent selection. The analysis of genetic variation of the weevils life-history traits in responses to different larval densities in both r- and K-selection populations indicates that different set of genes determining performance in two densities of analysed fecundity indices were accumulated during the course of the r- and K-selection.  相似文献

The method based on characterization of microbial populations in terms of their growth rate in agar plates has been used for testing the prediction of the theory of r- and K-selection in a microbial community from a tropical soil. Conditions which could lead bacterial populations to grow exponentially or to enter into a stationary phase were obtained by growing soil microbial populations in a chemostat and in a chemostat with recycle, respectively. Significant differences in population distribution patterns were observed by comparing results from the two growth systems. When soil community was grown in a chemostat and subjected specifically to well-defined r- and K-conditions, stable associations of organisms with r- and K-type characteristics developed as a consequence of environmental pressure. In contrast, when cultivated in chemostat with recycle under the same r- and K-conditions imposed on chemostat cultures, distribution patterns of r- and K-selected populations appeared very little affected by changes in substrate availability.  相似文献

Background

Differential selection between clones of apomictic species may result in ecological differentiation without mutation and recombination, thus offering a simple system to study adaptation and life-history evolution in plants.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We caused density-independent mortality by weeding to colonizer populations of the largely apomictic Taraxacum officinale (Asteraceae) over a 5-year period in a grassland biodiversity experiment (Jena Experiment). We compared the offspring of colonizer populations with resident populations deliberately sown into similar communities. Plants raised from cuttings and seeds of colonizer and resident populations were grown under uniform conditions. Offspring from colonizer populations had higher reproductive output, which was in general agreement with predictions of r-selection theory. Offspring from resident populations had higher root and leaf biomass, fewer flower heads and higher individual seed mass as predicted under K-selection. Plants grown from cuttings and seeds differed to some degree in the strength, but not in the direction, of their response to the r- vs. K-selection regime. More diverse communities appeared to exert stronger K-selection on resident populations in plants grown from cuttings, while we did not find significant effects of increasing species richness on plants grown from seeds.

Conclusions/Significance

Differentiation into r- and K-strategists suggests that clones with characteristics of r-strategists were selected in regularly weeded plots through rapid colonization, while increasing plant diversity favoured the selection of clones with characteristics of K-strategists in resident populations. Our results show that different selection pressures may result in a rapid genetic differentiation within a largely apomictic species. Even under the assumption that colonizer and resident populations, respectively, happened to be r- vs. K-selected already at the start of the experiment, our results still indicate that the association of these strategies with the corresponding selection regimes was maintained during the 5-year experimental period.  相似文献

The reproductive effort of 49 Angiosperms from the herb layers of Oak-Hornbeam forest, Black Pine forest, rock steppe andBromus erectus meadow was determined on a dry weight basis. The average reproductive effort of these communities appears to depend on habitat factors and competition (e.g. water, temperature and light) and not on the position within the successional position. The general validity of the r- and K-selection concept therefore is questioned.

The development of a benthic ecosystem on a sandy bottom at 3 m depth in the saline Lake Grevelingen, The Netherlands, is described. The development started after the closure of the former Grevelingen estuary and was followed for 4 1/2 years. Ecosystem attributes studied were biomass, secondary production, production/biomass ratio, type of food chains, species diversity, pattern diversity, size of organisms, type of life-cycles, and r- and K-selection. I outline the significance for protist evolution of the r-, K-selection spectrum,, and of my earlier theory that the most fundamental way organisms adapt to this spectrum is by evolutionary variations in their cell volumes, cell growth rates and genome sizes. Then I introduce the concept of phenotype diversifying selection; this refers to those selective forces which favour an increase in the number of phenotypes produced during a single life cycle by an organism's genotype and epigenetic system. These ideas are then used to discuss the evolution of protist development, with special reference to modifications of the cell cycle whose evolutionary causes and consequences can be related to K-selection for large size and r-selection for rapid reproduction. The significance of multiple fission, syncytia, multicellularity, nuclear dimorphism plus polyploidy, and reversible polyploidy, is treated in detail. Predictions are made of the effects of these different developmental patterns on genome size and the distribution and amounts of nucleoskeletal RNA and heterochromatin. I suggest that heterochromatin exists primarily because of phenotype diversifying selection for differing nuclear volumes. The possibility of applying these ideas to other cell properties like mitotic or cytokinetic mechanisms is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between fecundity and long-term adult fluctuations of 29 temperate noctuid moths was investigated and is explained in terms of the r- and K-selection strategies. The potential population growth rate per year (PGR) and the rate of return to equilibrium (sensu Pimm 1982) have been calculated and correlated with generation-to-generation fluctuations. A highly significant correlation was found between PGR and the coefficient of generation-to-generation variation. The r-strategy species possess the highest PGR, the highest generation-to-generation coefficient of variation and their larvae are polyphagous. Species with typical features of K-strategists exhibit the lowest PGR values and the lowest generation-to-generation coefficients of variation. Their larvae seem to be exclusively oligophagous.  相似文献

Summary Several pairs of species of microtine rodents show inverse distributions or abundance. Here I determine if the inverse abundance relationship of the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus (a forest species) and the field vole Microtus agrestis (an open field species) could be explained by habitat selection. Habitat selection was examined by choice experiments with combinations of soil and vegetation types, and with separate habitat factors. The effects of early experience and social behaviour were also studied, e.g. in a large outdoor enclosure. M. agrestis showed a stronger dependence on shelter (e.g. easily excavated soil or thick grassy vegetation) than C. glareolus, while the presence of preferred food did not affect habitat selection for either species. In both species, laboratory-bred specimens showed considerably fewer preferences. Habitat selection in subadult C. glareolus was influenced by social clumping, while territorial behaviour made more even distributions in M. agrestis.The less rigid habitat selection and weaker territorial behaviour observed in the forest species (Clethrionomys) compared with a species from temporary habitats (Microtus) is not consistent with present concepts of r- and K-selection.  相似文献

The fundamental problem in ecology is the relationship between organisms and the physical world. This question is approached through the study of ecosystems as wholes. Pristine, autonomous Arctic lakes provide an invaluable starting point for such investigations. Studies on these lakes, initiated in 1958, indicate that the dominant fish populations assume a recognizable and repeatable structure, which if not disturbed by external forces, is maintained indefinitely. The observable characteristics are high biomass, large individual size, great age, uniformity of individuals despite great variation in age, and relatively few juveniles. This configuration expresses a state of least specific energy dissipation or least specific entropy production and may be regarded as a standing wave in the energy flow. Similar characteristics were found in the dominant species in a wide range of ecosystems worldwide. A state of least dissipation develops when two energy transport processes interfere with each other in the vicinity of thermodynamic equilibrium. Thus it is postulated that living organisms originated through the agonistic interaction between two energy transport processes within materials, initially occurring in an environment close to thermodynamic equilibrium. These two processes, fundamental to energy transfer, are recognized as the principle of least action and its diametrical opposite, the principle of most action. Each force dominates system behavior in a different time frame: most action in the short-term (ecological time) and least action over the long-term (evolutionary time). Interaction between the countervailing forces provides an understanding of a wide range of emergent ecological generalities such as succession, r- and K-selection, the stability and diversity of ecosystems, and the directionality of evolutionary change.  相似文献

A Mendelian mutation, r-1, in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been isolated which elevates protoporphyrin accumulation of the Mendelian protoporphyrin mutants brS-1 and brC-1 more than 20 fold. This increased protoporphyrin accumulation is shown to result from increased delta-aminolevulinic acid synthesis in the double mutants brS-1 r-1 and brC-1 r-1 over that of brS-1 and brC-1 alone. By itself, the r-1 mutation has no detectable protoporphyrin accumulation and has reduced levels of delta-aminolevulinic acid synthesizing activity, chlorophyll, protoheme, and cytochrome oxidase activity. The low levels of chlorophyll and protoheme in r-1 can be increased by feeding delta-aminolevulinic acid. We hypothesize that r-1 may be a mutation of the gene coding for the delta-aminolevulinic acid synthesizing enzyme which reduces the sensitivity of this enzyme to feedback inhibition by protoporphyrin or heme as well as reducing the overall activity of the enzyme. Evidence is also presented for a single delta-aminolevulinic acid synthesizing enzyme serving both chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis.  相似文献

The molecular basis for the loss of steroid binding activity in receptorless (r-) glucocorticoid-resistant (dexr) mutants isolated from the glucocorticoid-sensitive (dexs) cell line CEM-C7 was investigated. Although there was little binding of the reversibly associating ligand [3H]dexamethasone in r- mutants, labeling with the covalent affinity ligand [3H] dexamethasone 21-mesylate revealed significant amounts of a 92 kilodalton human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) protein. Immunoblots of hGR protein in r- and normal cells showed that r- mutants expressed approximately half the amount of immunoreactive hGR protein seen in dexs cells. Comparison of the genomic organization of the hGR genes in normal and mutant cells revealed no discernable differences in the structure, or dosage, indicating that the r- phenotype was not the result of gross deletion or rearrangement of the hGR genes. In addition, r- cells expressed the same 7 kilobase mRNA as normal cells. More importantly, the amount of hGR mRNA expressed in r- cells was never significantly less, and in some cases was greater than, that seen in normal cells, indicating that the decrease in immunoreactive hGR protein seen in r- cells is not the result of loss of hGR mRNA expression. Taken together with the known mutation rate of the hGR gene(s) in these cells, these results suggest that the hGR genes in dexs CEM-C7 cells are allelic and that dexs cells express both a normal hGR protein and one with an altered steroid binding site. Furthermore, they suggest that the r- phenotype is acquired as the result of mutation within the coding region of the originally functional allele, leading to loss of ligand binding and expression of immunoreactive product.  相似文献

The role of W74 in stabilization of the binding of omega-amino acids to the recombinant (r) kringle 2 domain (residues 180-261) of tissue-type plasminogen activator ([K2tPA]) has been assessed by examination of the binding (dissociation) constants (Kd) of epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) and one of its structural analogues, 7-aminoheptanoic acid (7-AHpA), to variants of r-[K2tPA] generated by site-directed mutagenesis of the wild-type kringle domain. Two nonconservative mutations at W74 of r-[K2tPA] have been constructed, expressed, and purified, resulting in one variant molecule containing a W74L mutation (r-[K2tPA/W74L]) and another containing a W74S mutation (r-[K2tPA/W74S]). In both cases, binding of EACA and 7-AHpA was virtually eliminated in the mutated kringles. Two additional conservative mutations at W74 of r-[K2tPA] have been similarly generated, resulting in r-[K2tPA/W74F] and r-[K2tPA/W74Y]. For these mutants, binding of the same ligands to the variant recombinant kringle domain is retained, although it is significantly weaker in nature. The 1H-NMR spectra of each of the variant kringles demonstrates that all retain the general gross conformations of their wild-type counterpart but that some environmental changes of proton resonances occur at particular aromatic amino acid residues that may be involved in omega-amino acid binding. Differential scanning calorimetric analyses of each of the variant kringles suggest that none of the mutations led to substantial destabilization of their structures, again suggestive of gross conformational similarities in all r-[K2tPA] molecules constructed. We conclude that the aromatic character present at position 74 of wild-type r-[K2tPA] is of great importance to its ability to interact with omega-amino acid ligands, with tryptophan being the most effective amino acid at that position.  相似文献

The distributions of length frequencies subdivided by age of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus: Trachichthyidae) had the modal characteristics of K-selected populations. Oceanographic data showed that the depth strata occupied by orange roughy have boundary characteristics which could lead to the development of non-equilibrium dissipative thermodynamic structures and which would account for the K-selection configuration of orange roughy stocks.  相似文献

We have used a glucocorticoid receptor cDNA isolated from a mouse lymphoma cell line to characterize receptor mRNA and genomic sequences present in wild type and mutant rat hepatoma (HTC) and mouse thymoma (S49 and WEHI7) cells. Wild type rat and mouse cell lines contain two receptor mRNAs, 5 and 7 kilobase pairs (kb) in length, which differ in the length of their 3'-untranslated regions. Levels of receptor mRNA present in mutant HTC, WEHI7, and S49 cells of the r- (receptorless) phenotype are decreased compared to wild type cells. This decreased level of receptor mRNA parallels the decreased level of total immunoreactive receptor protein found in these cells. S49 nt- (nuclear transfer minus) cells contain receptor mRNA levels which parallel their hormone binding and immunoreactive receptor levels. Cells of the r- and nt- phenotype contain no detectable deletions or rearrangements of the receptor gene. We conclude that r- cells have lesions which affect the expression of receptor mRNA. Surprisingly, HTC cells of the r- phenotype differ from WEHI7 and S49 r- cells in that HTC r- cells contain a lower level of receptor DNA than does their parental wild type cell line. Although these cells may contain multiple lesions, it appears that loss of receptor genomic sequences is responsible, in part, for the phenotype of the HTC r- cells. The S49 nti (nuclear transfer increase) cells produce glucocorticoid receptors of molecular weights 40,000 and 94,000. These cells produce, in addition to the wild type 5- and 7-kb receptor mRNAs, two other receptor messages 5.5 and 3.5 kb in length. RNA blot analysis using various portions of our receptor cDNA indicates that these are 5' truncated messages and suggests that the 40-kDa nti receptor is truncated at its NH2-terminal end. These data also indicate that the hormone and DNA-binding regions of the receptor are located in the COOH-terminal half of the protein.  相似文献

Flies mutant for one or both of the last two enzymes of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis express a number of phenotypes that are also expressed by mutants of the first four pathway enzymes (r and Dhod-null mutants). However, r-1 flies also express two phenotypes, mottled eyes and poor viability, that are not usually expressed by r and Dhod-null flies. Chemical determinations show that orotic acid, a substrate for the fifth pathway enzyme, accumulates in r-1 individuals but not in r and wild-type individuals. Moreover, flies simultaneously mutant for r and r-1 do not express the mottled-eye phenotype, showing that r is epistatic to r-1 for this r-1-specific phenotype. When genotypically wild-type flies are cultured on a medium containing 6-azauracil, the base of a potent inhibitor of the last enzyme of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis, phenocopies are obtained that include the mottled-eye as well as the wing phenotypes of r-1 flies. These results support hypotheses that the phenotypes common to r, Dhod-null, and r-1 flies are consequences of uridylic acid deficiency, whereas the r-1-specific phenotypes result from orotic acid accumulation in flies lacking either or both of the last two enzymes of de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis.This research was supported by NSF Research Grant PCM 78-14164, an NSF predoctoral fellowship award to T. Mating type-specific mating pheromones autonomously released into the environment control cell-cell union in conjugation of the marine ciliate Euplotes raikovi. The mating pheromone, termed euplomone r-1, of cells of the homozygous mating type determined by the mat-1/mat-1 genotype was purified by means of a three-stage purification procedure which provides a yield of 79%. Starting from 10 liters of supernatant, 3.3 mg of euplomone r-1 were regularly recovered. Euplomone r-1 was identified with a protein showing a molecular weight of 12,000, an isoelectric point of 3.7, and unusually high contents of cysteine (15%) and tyrosine (5.8%). It appeared active at a concentration of 3.4 +/- 0.5 X 10(-12) M. Carbohydrate and a small colored compound, not yet identified, occurred in association with partially purified euplomone r-1 samples, whereas they were not detected in samples of the final product of purification. An acidic shift was apparently capable of destroying the carbohydrate/euplomone r-1 association, suggesting that it does not involve covalent bonds.  相似文献

Cultivation-independent techniques were applied to assess the succession and phylogenetic composition of bacterial communities in a vertical oxygen gradient in flooded, unplanted paddy soil microcosms. Microsensor measurements showed that within 6 h of flooding, oxygen was depleted from 200 microM at the floodwater-soil interface to undetectable amounts at a depth of approximately 2 mm and below. The gradient was quite stable over time, although the oxygen depletion was less pronounced 84 days than 6 h after flooding. Community fingerprint patterns were obtained by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis from the oxic, transition, and anoxic zones of triplicate soil microcosms at 0, 1 and 6 h, and 1, 2, 7, 21, 30, 42, 84, and 168 days after flooding. Correspondence analyses revealed that T-RFLP patterns obtained using either community DNA or RNA were affected by time and oxygen zone, and that there was a significant interaction between the effects of time and oxygen zone. The temporal dynamics of bacterial populations were resolved more clearly using RNA than using DNA. At the RNA level, successional community dynamics were most pronounced from 1 h to 2 days and less pronounced from 2 to 21 days after flooding, for both oxic and anoxic zones. No effect of time or oxygen zone on the community dynamics was observed from 21 to 168 days after flooding. Dominant early successional populations were identified by cloning and comparative sequence analysis of environmental 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes as members of the Betaproteobacteria (oxic zone) and the clostridial cluster I (anoxic zone). Dominant late successional populations belonged to the Verrucomicrobia and Nitrospira (detected mainly in the oxic zone), and to the Myxococcales (detected mainly in the anoxic zone). In conclusion, the bacterial community developed through successional stages, leading at the RNA level to almost stable community patterns within 21 days after flooding. This principal finding, in combination with the phylogenetic identity of early- and late-appearing populations, suggests that the community dynamics can be explained by the principles of r- and K-selection.  相似文献

Summary A Mendelian mutant r-1 in chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been shown to make the synthesis of -aminolevulinic acid (ALA) insensitive to inhibition by protoporphyrin. We have now combined the r-1 mutant with the protochlorophyllideaccumulating mutant y-1. From the phenotype of the double mutant y-1 r-1 and the phenocopy produced by feeding ALA to y-1, we conclude that r-1 also makes the synthesis of ALA insensitive to the inhibition by protochlorophyllide. To explain the fact that both ALA-fed y-1 and y-1 r-1 accumulate large amounts of protoporphyrin and smaller amounts of protochlorophyllide, we propose a new control feedback loop in the porphyrin biosynthetic pathway from protochlorophyllide to the step which converts protoporphyrin to magnesium protoporphyrin.  相似文献
